A quiet lakeside town in western New York state is the new home of Manhattan artist Chloe Abbington and the backdrop for murder in this series debut by Bailee Abbott.

For Chloe Abbington, the transition from fine art painter in New York City to painting-event business owner in charming Whisper Cove is more than a little jarring. But when poison-pen journalist Fiona Gimble writes a viciously negative review of the newly opened Paint with a View, Chloe learns that critics are the same everywhere. And when she finds Fiona’s body behind her shop with a painting knife in her neck, Chloe realizes that this picture-perfect town offers anything but peace and quiet.

Suddenly, bustling Artisan Alley is a crime scene, and Chloe is the prime suspect. Her sister and business partner, Izzie, isn’t much help–she’s busy running the shop, and besides, she has secrets of her own. As shrewd Detective Barrett tries to paint her into a corner, Chloe soon finds that Fiona had plenty of enemies. The Whisper Cove Gazette columnist wielded her pen like a sword, slicing and dicing just about every shop owner in the lakeside town.

Chloe sets out to prove that she’s been framed for Fiona’s murder. But she’d better learn the fine art of detection quickly, before the real killer paints the town red again. Otherwise, she may end up trading in her paint smock for an orange jumpsuit…or a green burial plot.

’Tis the season for celebrating when Gia Morelli’s holidays include both a wedding and yuletide festivities. Until someone naughty delivers a most unwanted Christmas gift—murder. . .

For a native New Yorker, palm trees and warm temperatures don’t equal winter, much less Christmastime. Nevertheless, Gia Morelli’s friends have decked the halls and trimmed the trees to truly welcome her into their “family” with an old-fashioned Boggy Creek, Florida holiday season. Even more joyous, Savannah Mills is getting married on Christmas Eve—the greatest gift Gia could ever wish for her best friend.

But when Gia and Savannah stop by the caterer for a final tasting a week before the wedding, they overhear another bride arguing with her son about her husband-to-be. Moments later, the woman is sampling a piece of wedding cake—gorgeously decorated with mistletoe frosting—then suddenly dies.

Now Gia’s caterer friends are the prime suspects in what appears to be murder by poisoning. To clear their names and ensure Savannah has a merry matrimony will require Gia to conjure up a Christmas miracle . . .

Includes recipes from the All-Day Breakfast Café!

Cozy Mystery
Reissue 2nd in the Series

Print length ‏ : ‎ 275 pages

Setting: A seaside town at the New Jersey shore

A wedding with all the trimmings—and death as an unexpected guest…

Victoria Rienzi came home to the Jersey shore to research a new book and perfect her cooking skills at her family’s seaside restaurant, the Casa Lido. But when Vic’s exacting nonna puts her in charge of catering the soup course for a wedding at the exclusive Belmont Country Club, it’s not long before trouble is simmering in the kitchen. Three temperamental chefs are butting heads, their sous chefs are throwing punches, and the formidable club president, Elizabeth Merriman, antagonizes everyone around her.

Elizabeth, aka “The Iron Lady,” has made her share of enemies, including the father of the bride, who was caught embezzling from the country club. She threatens to fire the famous pastry chef in charge of the wedding cake, who doesn’t bother to hide her hatred of Elizabeth. And who is the mystery man in dark glasses, who never leaves the older woman’s side?

Though the wedding goes off without a hitch, by the time the happy couple and their guests depart, Elizabeth Merriman is missing. When her body is found on the beach the next morning, it appears that the country club president slipped from the top of the seawall, but Vic isn’t convinced. Did The Iron Lady finally push someone too far? And did that someone push her back—into the arms of death?

Rescue Road

Pet Rescue Romance Book 1

by Gayle M. Irwin

Genre: Sweet Contemporary Romance

Freelance writer Rhiann Kelly shelved romance for years. Her dream of starting an animal sanctuary takes deep roots after finding the perfect location in southwestern Montana and purchasing the property for back taxes.

Emergency medical technician Levi Butler knows his elderly friend left the ranch to him in his will. Levi anxiously awaits the probate to be complete so he can plan his retirement and begin his dream of raising and selling horses.

When Rhiann and Levi find each other at the ranch simultaneously, sparks fly – and not the romantic kind. Yet their mutual attraction deepens, especially after Levi finds Rhiann injured in an accident.

Meantime, land developer Dallas Patterson sets his sights on charming Rhiann to obtain the land.

Can Rhiann and Levi work together to detour Patterson and find a solution in which neither needs to give up their dream, or will the fence line of their hearts – and the property – separate them forever?

Can their broken paths weave their hearts together as they travel the rescue road?

October is National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, observed by national pet rescue and adoption organizations such as the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) and American Humane, as well as local and regional animal rescues and shelters.

The need for animal adoption is large. According to the ASPCA, nearly 920,000 dogs, cats, and other animals are killed in shelters every year due to the lack of adoptions. Although this statistic is a significant improvement from 10 years ago when 2.6 million were euthanized, it’s still a sad, and mostly unnecessary, fact – the majority of these animals are healthy and adoptable, and therefore, would make wonderful four-footed companions.

All of my pets are rescues, and my goal in life is to promote the rescue and adoption of animals. As an author, I accomplish that through stories for children and through my contemporary romance novel series, which I’ve titled The Pet Rescue Romance Series. Melding my enjoyment of creating and sharing stories with my passion for pet rescue and adoption is a dream come true.

During October’s National Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, the e-book version of Rescue Road, the first book in the series, will be on sale for just $1.99, with a portion of the month’s sales donated to animal rescue and adoption organizations.

Gayle M. Irwin is an author and freelance writer with a passion for pet rescue and adoption. She creates engaging books and enlightening short stories and articles. She is a member of Wyoming Writers Inc., which has presented her with several awards during the past 10 years, and Northern Colorado Writers. She has also won three Wyoming Press Association awards for her magazine article writing. A former editor and reporter for the West Yellowstone News in West Yellowstone, Montana, Gayle enjoys sharing stories about nature, people, and life. She is an avid advocate for pet rescue and adoption, and she donates a percentage of her writing income, including book sales, to animal rescue and adoption organizations. She has worked for two different humane societies and continues helping animal rescue organizations as a volunteer transporter.

She considers herself a human and pet life advocate, sharing stories about people and animals through articles for Pregnancy Help News, WREN Magazine, the Casper Star Tribune (including children’s stories in the kids’ My Trib section), Creation Illustrated, and other publications. Seven of her short stories appear in seven different Chicken Soup for the Soul books, such as I Can’t Believe My Dog Did That, Finding My Faith, and The Spirit of America. She enjoys traveling, nature photography, reading, spending time at her mountain cabin and a friend’s ranch, and helping non-profit organizations in various ways.

Stitch, Bake, Die!

An Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mystery

by Lois Winston

.

Stitch, Bake, Die! (An Anastasia Pollack Crafting Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
10th in Series
Setting – New Jersey
Independently Published (October 4, 2021)
Print length ‏ : ‎ 218 pages
ASIN ‏ : ‎ B09D5VZFRX

With massive debt, a communist mother-in-law, a Shakespeare-quoting parrot, and a photojournalist boyfriend who may or may not be a spy, crafts editor Anastasia Pollack already juggles too much in her life. So she’s not thrilled when her magazine volunteers her to present workshops and judge a needlework contest at the inaugural conference of the NJ chapter of the Stitch and Bake Society, a national organization of retired professional women. At least her best friend and cooking editor Cloris McWerther has also been roped into similar duties for the culinary side of the 3-day event taking place on the grounds of the exclusive Beckwith Chateau Country Club.

Marlene Beckwith, wife of the multi-millionaire pharmaceutical magnate and country club owner, is both the chapter president and conference chairperson. The only thing greater than her ego is her sense of entitlement. She hates to lose at anything and fully expects to win both the needlework and baking competitions.

When Anastasia and Cloris arrive at the conference, they discover cash bribes in their registration packets. The Society members, few of whom are fans of Marlene, stick up for the accused and instead suggest that Marlene orchestrated the bribes to eliminate her stiffest competition.

The next morning when Marlene is found dead, Anastasia questions whether she really died peacefully in her sleep. After Marlene’s husband immediately has her cremated, Anastasia once again finds herself back in reluctant amateur sleuth mode.

With the help of Cloris, Marlene’s personal assistant Rhetta, and a laptop someone will stop at nothing to find, Anastasia soon unravels evidence of insurance scams, medical fraud, an opioid ring, long-buried family secrets, and too many possible suspects. And that’s before she not only stumbles over the body of yet another member of the Stitch and Bake Society but also finds Rhetta unconscious.

Can Anastasia piece together the various clues before she becomes the killer’s next target?

Crafting tips included.

Why I referred to the Japanese Internment Camps During WWII as Concentration Camps

I was born in Oregon in 1951. That was just a few years after World War 2. My father was only slightly involved in the war as it ended just after he enlisted, thank goodness! However, Fort Steven on the Oregon Coast was the only place in the continental U.S. that was shelled during the war. He would take me and my siblings to see the fort and tell us about the war. However, one element of the war that he never told me about was the rounding up of the Japanese Americans on the west coast and shipping them in cattle cars to Internment camps inland.

I learned about the internment camps when I became friends with Japanese kids whose parents and/or grandparents had been sent to them. I learned even more when I went to visit a college friend who lived just a few miles over the Oregon/California border from the camp at Tule Lake.

When I started researching for my book, “The Sand Pounder,” I read a book titled, “Beyond the Camps,” written by an author friend by the name of Denny Dressman. His book detailed the personal experiences of numerous Japanese Americans who, once released, settled in Denver where I now live.

As I added together all the stories that I was told from these various sources, I was shocked and saddened by how our government treated these people. While the Japanese families that I wrote about in my book are fictional, the experiences I relay through my writing really did happen to others. The Internment camps were supposed to be designed to keep the Japanese safe but that certainly wasn’t the way it was handled. I realize that fear can make people do strange and horrible things.

I hope we can learn from history. As Winston Churchill paraphrased the famous quote from Santayana

“Those who fail to learn from history are condemned to repeat it.”

Inked & Sweet

by Megan Slayer

Inked & Sweet (Malachi Brothers 3) by [Megan Slayer]

Synopsis

Dante Malachi screwed his life up to epic proportions. His addictions nearly killed him before he hit rock bottom. Getting kicked out of the Malachi family was his motivation to clean up his act, but leaving his old life behind meant leaving her, as well. Rona’s the one he never forgot.

Rona never wanted to see Dante again. She blames him for the bad in her life — but also most of the good. When he comes back into her orbit, she knows she has to let him in — or get rid of him for good.

When a bomb threat throws them together, it’s up to Rona and Dante to decide if they want to extinguish the desire between them or reignite their fiery passion.

Check out this peek inside:

Copyright ©2021 Megan Slayer

Dante drove away from his brother’s guest house and growled. How dare his brother throw him out? How dare his brother demand he stop stealing money from the family? So he had no claim to the money and had treated his brothers shabbily, but Jesus. They didn’t have to throw him out.

Maybe he did deserve to be removed. He’d acted like a real jerk to Kelly, Martin’s girl, and spent so much money on worthless shit — drink, drugs, tattoos… He’d run roughshod over his life.

God, he was awful.

He’d been a man on the run — from his life, his family, the explosions he’d set off. He wanted someone to hurt in the same way he had. No one knew the truth, and he hadn’t shared many details. Why should he? His attitude had pushed everyone away.

He drove off and didn’t look back. Screw ’em. His brothers didn’t want him around, then fine. He’d show them he wasn’t just one thing — a screw-up. So his ex-wife and daughter hated him. So they refused to let him see his grandson.

Fine.

He’d become someone on his own. No more illegal stuff. No more expecting others to do the work for him.

He’d do it.

He had no choice.

Dante left his old life behind in search of a new one. He had business skills and the ability to talk to people. He’d find something and survive.

He wasn’t that old and had time to do something different with his life.

He owed it to his brothers to change and become the man they knew he could be. Besides, he owed it to himself to be better than his past.

Going Coastal

Kate Matthews Mystery Series Book 1

A client dying on her massage table is traumatic enough for Kate Matthews, but when the police declare that death a homicide, her life is upended as she is cast as the major suspect.

None of this is what Kate expected from her move to the peaceful, beach town of Santa Barbara, California. After a near-fatal heart attack, an early retirement from her Los Angeles law firm, and a change in careers, Kate envisioned a quiet life with her wife, Alicia, and their grown children.

Since her client, Celia Tucker, held a politically-influential position on the California Coastal Commission, the murder becomes a media event. Kate finds herself and her family sucked into the maelstrom. The former lawyer has all she can do to find the truth behind Celia’s death without adding her own name to the body count.

You’ve probably heard of pantsers verses plotters, i.e. writers who plan out their books (plotters) as opposed to those who start out with a vague idea of where the book is going. I definitely fall on the seat-of-your-pants side. In fact, my writing life began with a scene that played in my head so vividly that I was compelled to write it down. I had no idea who the people were or why they were dancing in the middle of a ballroom at a teacher’s conference, but there they were in my head, and now they were down on paper. That first scene I wrote ended up being in the middle of the story, absolute evidence that nothing in that novel was planned. I’m getting more organized in that I mostly write in the order that things happen in the book, but I don’t always know the victim or murderer before I start. Six published books into this adventure (Politics Makes Strange Deadfellows comes out in November), I am still surprised by what my characters do and say. Hopefully, it will always be that way.

Jane DiLucchio is a late bloomer when it comes to writing.

She spent many years as a teacher (first elementary school and later at the community college level), massage therapist, and backyard farmer before giving in to the little voices that kept sounding off in her head.

Since there’s a thin line between a psychotic and a writer (psychotics try to convince everyone that the voices they hear are real; writers write it down and tell everyone its fiction), Jane finally decided to give in to the voices rather than undergo intensive psychotherapy.

Jane and her wife are raising their two cats in a loving home in Southern California. (Actually, the cats allow Jane and Sue to live with them in return for certain personal services, but that’s another story entirely.) Jane continues to raise crops, travel, write, and spend time with her friends and family – all activities she loves.

The Fog Ladies are back, in the third installment of this endearing cozy murder mystery series.

“There was a man in the soup.” When the Fog Ladies volunteer at a San Francisco soup kitchen, these spunky elderly friends plus one overworked young doctor-in-training envision washing and chopping and serving. Not murder. Now the soup kitchen is doomed, and the mysteries have just begun. Was the death rooted in a long-ago grudge? Can they save the soup kitchen? Will they find the killer? Could the Fog Ladies, too, end up “in the soup”?
