An Interview with author A.A. Abbott
- What is unique about your books?
Naturally, every writer has a unique voice! My specialty is writing thrillers about women who find their inner strength when they’re facing the worst dangers imaginable. In my latest book, “Lies at Her Door”, a young woman is suspected of murder and risks her life to clear her name.
My stories are at the psychological suspense end of the spectrum rather than action thrillers, although “Lies at Her Door” does contain tense action scenes. Unusually for a suspense thriller, it also features a cute dog. She’s a Samoyed, a fluffy, white and sweet-natured breed. For fourteen years, my family shared a house with a pure-bred Samoyed, and his sunny presence is very much missed.
- Any other animals in “Lies at Her Door”?
Yes, as well as the Samoyed, there’s a German Shepherd and a gaggle of geese who guard a farm. They’re not pets; they are kept to do a job. When I moved to the West Country of England, I stayed for a while on a farm where geese in the yard sounded a warning at the approach of strangers. They were noisy rather than aggressive, a very effective method of letting the farmer know she had visitors.
- You work with a lot of beta readers. Is that a substitute for an editor?
Nothing tops the professional polish provided by an editor, but my beta readers have also helped me improve my work. They are a mix of specialists like the ex-police detective who ensures I get procedures right, fellow writers and people who just love to read. Some of their ideas are amazing and make a big difference to my books. I’m grateful to every single one of them.
- Where do you live? Do you set your stories there?
I’m a Brit, living in Bristol, England. It’s in the south-west – the West Country, as we call it – and there’s a slower pace of life than in London. “Lies at Her Door” is the first book I’ve located entirely in Bristol. My earlier thrillers were set in London and Birmingham (the Celestial City of the English Midlands rather than the Magic City in Alabama), as I used to live and work there.
In ancient times, Bristol sprang up around a bridge over the River Avon. The river still runs through the centre of the city and then out to the sea via the cliff-like Avon Gorge, which plays a pivotal part in the story.
- If we like reading about Bristol, are there other writers you’d recommend?
Elizabeth Hill, CL Taylor and Katharine Johnson have all written fantastic thrillers set in Bristol. Also, do check out my last book, “Bright Lies”, which begins in the West Country until a life-changing event sends the heroine fleeing to Birmingham.

British crime thriller writer A.A. Abbott (also known as Helen Blenkinsop) enjoys escaping with an exciting and emotional read, and
that’s what she aims to write too. Based in the city of Bristol in England’s beautiful West Country, she’s shared her love for the city by writing about it in her latest psychological thriller.
Lies at Her Door is Helen’s ninth book. She’s had help from readers on subjects as varied as police procedure, philosophy and music. She’s grateful to them and to editor Katharine D’Souza for making huge improvements to the story.
Like 10% of us, many of Helen’s family are dyslexic. While she is not, she wants her books to be enjoyed by readers with dyslexia and visual impairment too. She publishes her thrillers in a Large Print dyslexia-friendly edition as well as standard paperback and ebook
versions. (You can also adjust the font on your electronic device to suit your needs.)
A member of the Alliance of Independent Authors, Helen likes speaking to book groups, business networks and social circles. She also has fun reading thrillers and short stories at live fiction events and on Zoom. If you’re a book blogger, litfest organiser, reviewer or simply adore books, she’d love to hear from you.
