Eden

by Bobbi Smith

.

Genre: Historical Romance

Synopsis

“Just know that, no matter what, I truly do love you.”

Those words and a Bible were all that remained of Logan when Eden awoke. Their romance had been born amid the ravages of war. Love had struck Eden and she had surrendered to it. She had exchanged wedding vows with the handsome stranger who had saved her life, but she realized now that their life together had been a lie. Her husband was a Yankee spy, who had used her to infiltrate the Confederate cause. The hardening of her heart should have been as rapid as the loss of it, but one question remained—Had he left her with a final truth?

~~~~~
Enjoy this peek inside:
As Eden stared up at Logan, she could see the concern in his expression and she was touched by it. Since he was a minister, though, she didn’t think he’d appreciate what she’d done to those Yankees that night and she didn’t want to tell him. “Nothing’s wrong, so you can go.”
“But, Eden—why are you disguised this way?” Logan wanted to find out what she’d been up to, but the sight of her wearing pants and a shirt that was partially unbuttoned distracted him. He grew irritated with himself and struggled to keep his focus on her possible spying. “If you’re in trouble, I can help you.”
“This was something I had to do myself.” She looked up at him and found herself lost in his dark-eyed gaze. The intensity of his regard left her breathless and very much aware of him as a man.
“It had to have been dangerous if you dressed this way. What if something had happened to you?” Logan moved closer to her, knowing she was like no other woman he’d ever known.
“Nothing happened to me, and those two Yankees didn’t look very dangerous when I got done with them.”
“What did you do?”
“Considering your vocation, the less you know, the better.’
His expression turned fierce, and he wasn’t feeling religious right then. “My vocation calls me to save souls and worry about innocents who find themselves in trouble.”
At his words, she looked up at him, her heartbeat quickened and she found herself remembering the kiss they’d shared in the garden.
“I’m not in trouble.”
“Thank God you’re safe.” Logan reached out and took her in his arms and kissed her.
Reason told Logan this was crazy. This was Eden. She might be his sworn enemy. He told himself, too, that he was supposed to be Reverend Matthews, but his desire for her was too powerful. Nothing mattered at that moment except that Eden was in his arms, returning his kiss with equal fervor.
The Fear of Writing a Novel Based on a True Story
The biggest fear about writing a novel based on a true story is the risk of inaccuracies, misunderstandings or misrepresentations.  When writing the novel Mother Knows Worst, which is based on a true story, I had to ensure that I did extensive research and fact checking to avoid presenting false information.  I also was careful not to infringe on the privacy of the real-life individuals who may have been represented in the book.
Another fear is the possibility of offending or hurting the real-life people who are part of the story.  I had to be sensitive to the feelings of the people involved and ensure that their portrayal is respectful and accurate, which was tough because of the story.  I did not want to defame any individual and that was a huge consideration. Instead, I wanted to give a heartwarming story about the challenges of two cultures colliding.
I was concerned about the reception of the book by the public and how it would be received by those familiar with the true story.  I was concerned about criticism or backlash if readers feel that the book does not accurately represent the true events or if they feel that I had taken liberties with the story for dramatic effect.
Eggs For the Ageless
by Kyle A. Massa
Genre: Comedy, Fantasy
.
.
Religion is a funny thing. Especially when you accidentally create your own.
Eccentric young writer Zeggara “Egg” East has done just that, much to the chagrin of her devout mother. Egg’s new religion is called “Penguinism” and it’s proving far more popular than anyone—even the immortal Ageless—could’ve imagined. And the thing about deities is, they don’t appreciate a rival dogma.
Now everyone’s choosing sides in the coming conflict, including a tea-slurping tyrant, a guy with 12 gifts, and the God of Waste Management. So when Egg and her mother pick opposing factions, Egg has to wonder…can they reconcile, or will religion keep them apart forever?
Perfect for fans of Terry Pratchett, Christopher Moore, and Douglas Adams, Eggs for the Ageless is a comic fantasy novel about family, faith, and waddling—not necessarily in that order.
What readers are saying:
.
A fantasy comedy that swims in similarly madcap waters as works by Terry Pratchett and Christopher Moore, Massa’s novel coolly and deftly introduces a farcical setting that reflects the absurdity of today’s world, brimming with commentary on religion, capitalism, and writing.”Kirkus Reviews
.
A riot of a book where the characters amuse while offering cutting critiques of human nature (and god nature?). Light as well as insightful. A triumph.”Kate Tailor, Benjamin Franklin Award Winning Author
Hilarious, quirky, and sharply satirical. Kyle A. Massa has crafted a work of comedic genius that will make you laugh until you cry, while simultaneously exploring the hypocrisy of some of humanity’s deepest-held beliefs. A read for anyone who delights in absurdity.” – Laura Lauda, Author
.
Eggs for the Ageless is a hoot. It’s fun and easy to read, but leaves you with lots to think about, and endless chuckles. It’s filled with delightful characters, both good and bad. Kyle A. Massa weaves together a bundle of hilarious plot threads so expertly that you never quite know where they’re going, but can’t wait to get there.” – Geoff Jones, Author of The Dinosaur Four
.
Fun, funny, and wildly creative.” – Nathan Pieplow, Author
Interesting character development and a fast-clip storyline tells a very funny tale. Highly recommend.”AJM, Amazon Reviewer
Q: What inspired you to write this book?
I’ve always been fascinated by ancient mythology, particularly the Greeks, because they’re pretty much an immortal dysfunctional family. Though they had deities for almost everything, they were still missing some important subjects, such as waste management. So I filed that idea away.
I was also interested in the origins of Scientology (and its effects on the film career of John Travolta). It’s a religion intentionally started by an author, which made me wonder, what if a writer started a religion by accident?
When I combined those two ideas, I found I had a compelling conflict: Writer accidentally starts her own religion, stealing worshippers from the existing pantheon of gods and goddesses. They get mad at the writer, and chaos ensues. That became the plot of Eggs for the Ageless.
Q: What can we expect from you in the future?
For me, the greatest allure of independent authorship is creative freedom. I want to explore as many genres as I can, which is why I’m following up Eggs for the Ageless with a collection of nonfiction essays, due out in the fall. From there, I’m deciding between a book of interlocking novellas, or a sci-fi novel about parallel bachelor/bachelorette parties. Wish me luck.
Q: What are common traps for aspiring writers?
Getting discouraged by early obscurity.
I remember when I finally finished and published my first book, I had this expectation of success. I wasn’t expecting all five-star reviews or massive sales—just hoping for a modest amount of both.
Instead, my launch was pretty unremarkable. Family and friends bought it (and I’m so thankful that they did!), but sales quickly dropped off.
At first, I was disappointed. When Stephen King wrote Carrie, Hollywood adapted it into a major movie two years later. So where the hell was Brian De Palma, and why wasn’t he adapting my book?
Then, weirdly, I heard an anecdote about Bruce Springsteen that brightened my mood. Today, fans recognize Bruce’s first two albums (Greetings from Asbury Park, N.J. and The Wild, the Innocent & the E Street Shuffle) as classics. However, at the time of release, they didn’t sell well nationally at all. Only after the runaway success of his third album, Born to Run, did most fans discover the previous two.
This is a roundabout way of saying that consistency is the best way to build your community. Even if your first few books don’t work, keep writing. Eventually, you’ll write your Born to Run.
Undertaking Love
by Megan Montgomery
Publication date: April 1st 2023
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance
Bethany West upgraded her lucrative career as a sex worker for her dream job as a death worker when she partnered at Smythe & Co. Mortuary. She expected her eco-friendly innovations and death positive attitude to blow the roof off the Victorian-era relic. But that was seven months ago, and during that time, she’s only managed to piss off her embittered business partner, George Smythe, a man dead set on maintaining the status quo and driving Bethany out of his namesake business.
When the pair reluctantly travel together to a mortuary conference in New Orleans—and compete in dueling embalming demonstrations—George finally recognizes the value of Bethany’s business model for the first time. He’s also starting to recognize a growing attraction to his blonde bombshell business partner. Meanwhile, Bethany learns the truth behind George’s cold contempt, and it’s much worse than she thought, stemming not from a single incident, but from the constant on-call status, the compassion fatigue, and the overwhelming stress of the job.
Bethany has 4 days to crack open his tough outer shell to reveal the compassionate man she knows is inside, and she has a plan, but unless George learns to open his heart and lean on her, at the risk of succumbing to their cremation-level attraction in a dangerous way, he’ll jeopardize both the business and their hearts by refusing the true partnership they both need.
Bethany
My body was broken.
I blinked hard to lubricate my eyes, struggling to stay awake behind the wheel. The vent blasted tepid air into my face, trying its damnedest to desiccate my skin and sabotage the efforts of my latest hyaluronic acid injections.
My stomach churned from too much coffee and too little sleep.
A sweat broke out under my arms and boobs.
Great. Now I could smell all that coffee excreting from my pores and ruining my favorite silk blouse.
I glanced at the man in the passenger seat.
George’s pores were looking perfectly dry, as usual. He wouldn’t think of sweating, even from the most strenuous effort.
I’d seen him pull a rotund, decomposing man out of that impossible space between the toilet and the bathtub and plop him on a mortuary cot in an un-air-conditioned, third-floor apartment in the middle of August without breaking a sweat.
The man never had a hair out of place, was never not freshly shaven, and he never forgot to button his suit jacket when he stood, or unbutton it when he sat.
And he was a consummate professional—as long as you didn’t work with him.
And as long as your name wasn’t Bethany West.
I breathed in a lungful of stale air. Even now, in the mortuary van, George managed to smell fresh, yet intensely masculine. The faintest notes of sandalwood and citrus wafted toward me as he fiddled with his ear, pushing his earbud deeper in.
I suspected he wasn’t listening to anything producing actual sound; the earbuds were just a tactic to try to keep me from making “unnecessary” conversation.
I was almost too tired to care.
I stifled a yawn, hoping he wouldn’t catch it.
He did, of course.
I saw the tick of his jaw from the corner of my eye. Glaring at the screen of the laptop balanced on his crossed legs, his flexed fingers hovering over the keyboard, a ballpoint pen clutched in his teeth.
I’d never seen the man smile except for a wince-like approximation of the real thing, and he saved that stingy expression for our clients.
After an entire life spent in the trenches of the funeral business, his handsome face was permanently etched into a show of bland sympathy—except when he scowled in contempt.
That expression was reserved exclusively for me.
