Book Description:

Micah Thorne thought grief was the heaviest burden he would carry. But the forest waits, ancient and watching, offering visions he cannot explain—and a choice that could break the cycle of loss—or trap him forever.

Drawn into a mysterious forest where time bends and memory takes shape, Micah encounters a silent fox who seems to know his path and forces that test the boundaries of choice and inheritance.
Deep within the moonlit woods, an ancient game waits to be played. One decision may offer Micah a chance to break a generational burden—but only if he can face the darkness both around him and within.
Mancala Moon is a quietly mythic work of literary fiction infused with magical realism—a modern spiritual folktale that lingers between inner lives and ancient stories. Haunting and emotionally intimate, it explores loss, legacy, and the fragile courage required to heal.
Readers will discover:

  • A poetic, mythic journey through grief, family, and self-discovery.
  • A forest full of secrets where visions, trials, and ancient forces await.
  • Literary fiction with magical realism for readers who love introspective, symbolic storytelling.
  • A story that lingers long after the last page, rich with meaning and emotion.

Step into the forest. Follow the whispers. Discover a story that stays with you.

Interview with Author Asa Bowers
.
  1. Where do you get inspiration for your stories?
Inspiration comes from the everyday and the unseen. Moments where reality feels almost magical. For Mancala Moon, I was drawn to inherited grief and how it shapes identity, paired with the quiet, mysterious rhythms of nature. Often, a single image, like a moonlit forest or a fox crossing a path, sparks an entire story.
  2. Which was the hardest character to write? The easiest?
The hardest was Micah, whose journey through grief and family legacy required revisiting uncomfortable emotions. The easiest was the fox. Silent, instinctive, and wise, it flowed naturally onto the page, guiding the story in its own subtle way.
  3. What made you write a book about such an emotional topic?
I wanted to explore how we carry the past within us, whether family legacy or personal loss. Mancala Moon became a way to examine holding on versus letting go, using a slightly surreal, magical landscape to give these emotions shape and depth.
  4. There are many books out there about self-discovery. What makes yours different?
Mancala Moon blends grief and magical realism with a deeply introspective style, where the natural world becomes a character. It’s less about plot and more about emotional resonance. Inviting readers to feel the story as much as they read it.
  5. What advice would you give budding writers?
Write even when it’s uncomfortable. Read widely, but write with your own voice. Don’t wait for perfect conditions. Your perspective is already needed. Be patient with yourself; every draft, even the messy ones, brings clarity and depth.
