The residents of Hawthorne Cove are determined to prove their seaside town deserves a place on every literary lover’s travel list. With a brand-new Jane Austen Festival, charming boutiques, and enough Regency flair to satisfy even the most devoted Austen fan, they’re ready for their grand debut. But when opening night ends with a dead Mr. Darcy, literature professor Chloe Sinclair, in town to escape a life that hasn’t gone to plan, learns that the most captivating stories aren’t always the ones written in books.

Sherlock Scones

I love a good literary pun almost as much as I love a good baked good, which is precisely how the Sherlock Scones came to exist. They are the signature treat at Hawthorne Cove’s Baskerville Bakery, where everything is literary themed and a basset hound will beg for all of your crumbs.

Makes 8 scones

Prep: 40 minutes, bake: 20 minutes, total: 1 hour 15 minutes

Ingredients

Scones

2 cups all-purpose flour

½ cup granulated sugar

2 teaspoons baking powder

Zest of 1 lemon

½ cup (1 stick) salted butter, frozen

½ cup buttermilk

1 large egg, cold

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup frozen wild blueberries

Lemon Glaze

1 cup powdered sugar

Juice of ½ lemon

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and lemon zest in a large bowl.
  3. Grate the frozen butter directly into the flour mixture. Toss with a fork so every shred is coated.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, and vanilla. Pour into the flour mixture and stir just until combined.
  5. Gently fold in the frozen blueberries.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured counter and shape it into a disk about 1 inch thick. Cut the disk into 8 wedges.
  7. Arrange the wedges on the prepared baking sheet and freeze for 15 minutes.
  8. Bake for 18-22 minutes, until the tops are set and the edges are golden. Allow the scones to cool.
  9. While they cool, stir the juice of half a lemon into the powdered sugar until smooth.
  10. Once the scones have cooled (or slightly sooner if you, like me, are impatient), drizzle liberally with the lemon glaze.

If you’d like more literary-themed bakes, One of Our Darcies is Dead, the first book of the Hawthorne Cove cozy mystery series, has three more. You can also access the full Baskerville Bakery Recipe Collection for free by signing up for my newsletter at GraceCaldwell.com/recipes.
