MY REVIEW

It was just another day. Murphy, along with his dog Hogan, and Katrina, his sort of cousin, got off the Mount Roberts tram in Juneau, Alaska. Before they knew it they were entangled in a mystery. It all started when Hogan tore the leash out of Hogan’s hand and disappeared from sight. Finding the boxer led to an abandoned mine and a perilous face off with the Black-Eyed Man and his gang.

As I was reading this adventure I could feel the author’s love for Alaska and it’s history. There’s even a glossary at the end so you can check things out for yourself. That love for history shows up in Murphy and his parents. And very much so in Katrina.

The action was immediate and quickly grabbed me. I adored Murphy and Katrina. The author really brought them to life and their adventure brought back many memories of my own childhood adventures. Hogan, the boxer, was a rascal. Murphy’s parents were wonderful and instilled curiosity and questions from the kids. And the dastardly Black-Eyed Man and his gang certainly earned their title.

This is the second book in the Alaska Williwaw series and it’s an easy decision to go back and read the first one. I love the feelings this adventure brought out in me.

Chapter 1: Dangerous Den

Murphy recoiled in horror as the creature landed on his neck. He screamed when it flopped onto his face and omitted a high-pitched squeal next to his ear.

Frantically swatting the darkness in his panic, he twisted and lurched to get away, but his body was wedged in place. He dropped his phone and covered his face with one hand, flailing in the darkness with the other. To his relief, he was able to knock the beast off his head. He breathed heavily. He could hear his assailant flopping and scuffling nearby and he feared another attack. His body shivered involuntarily.

It’s just a bat . . . calm down, breathe. Inhaling deeply, he counted to three as he drew air into his lungs, then he slowly exhaled to the count of three and repeated it. It was a technique Coach Troutman taught him in Junior wrestling class. It helped calm his panic when he was caught in a tight hold. He wasn’t afraid of bats per se, but alone in the dark in a tight space was a whole other thing. What if it’s a vampire bat? They don’t live in Alaska. But what if? Tentatively running his hands over the ground in search of his phone, he still was not completely convinced the bat didn’t want to suck his blood. Where’s my phone? Did the light go off? I hope I didn’t drop it down the . . . At that moment the bat flapped its wings. Murphy shrunk away as a leathery appendage brushed his cheek. He listened as it gained flight. The sound grew fainter and he realized the bat had flown straight down into the chasm. He gazed after it and noticed a faint glow of light. Pushing closer to the edge he peered over the rim. What he saw gave him hope. His cell phone was sitting upside down on a small ledge about an arm’s length away. He dug the toes of his boots into the hard-packed earth and inched closer. Juniper branches dug into his back as protruding rocks pushed into his ribs. He stretched toward his phone. His fingers clutched at the air a few inches from it. With his free hand, he blindly searched for something to hold onto. His finger found a thick branch of the Juniper bush and he grasped it tightly. He shoved with his feet and pulled with one hand, holding tightly to the juniper with his other. His body gained a few inches of progress so he tried for his phone again. His fingers touched it, but he couldn’t grasp it. He pushed and strained with all his might, only needing another inch. Suddenly his brain registered a loud cracking sound, like you hear when a limb is torn from a tree. Murphy’s body suddenly jolted forward. “No!” The juniper branch tore loose in his hand. His body lurched again, his shoulders hung over the chasm. He was slowly slipping over the edge and there didn’t seem to be anything he could do to stop it. His hands desperately sought purchase on the smooth rock at the top of the opening. His fingers worked feverishly at every small bump and crack, but they couldn’t find a safe purchase. Gravity steadily pulled his body into the black void while he tried desperately to dig his toes into the hard earth. Abruptly, he fell headfirst into the abyss. For a brief moment his boots hooked the rim but immediately slipped off. He plummeted into the unknown. “Nooooooooooooo . . . ” * * * An hour earlier, Murphy and Katrina had stepped from the Mount Roberts tram at its terminus nearly two thousand feet above the historic streets of Juneau, Alaska’s capital city. With the sun high in a cloudless sky it was a rare and perfect day to launch the season. It was fast becoming a tradition for the locals to take advantage of the first week of tram operation before the multitude of cruise ship visitors overwhelmed the tiny city and the tram itself. Many came to hike the trails, some came to photograph the spectacular scenery and wildlife, others came only to admire the astounding panorama and to enjoy a picnic lunch. Hogan pulled hard at his leash. Murphy leaned back to slow him down but was forced into a slow jog to keep up. “Slow down, Hoge, we just got here. We have all day.” Hogan wanted to sniff everywhere at once. His pushed-up black nose worked feverishly as his bulging eyes darted in every direction and his white feet pranced impatiently. Murphy pulled on the leash and raised his voice. “Hogan, calm down.” At the mention of his name, Hogan wagged his stubby tail and circled back to lick Murphy’s hand. “Do you smell the flowers?” Katrina called as she began skipping to keep up. “Yeah, it’s awesome up here in the spring and the tram is always cool anytime. A bit scary, but worth it.” “It is a pretty good adrenalin rush for six minutes. I always imagine the floor dropping away.” She adjusted her round-lensed, red-tinted sunglasses and smiled. Murphy gulped. “Great, thanks for that thought, we still have to go down.” He had managed to slow Hogan down to a walk. They walked side by side for a moment, neither talking until he said, “I like it.” “Like what?” “Your hair.” “Oh, okay, um, thanks.” “What do you call it?” “What?” “The color.” “Indigo.” Katrina’s hair was tied high in a single ponytail that seemed to erupt from the top of her head. The sun glinted off the luxurious deep blue color. Modern Pebbles chic. Murphy smirked. “Can I ask you something?” She was silent for an uncomfortable pause. “I guess.” He smiled before asking, “Where did you find neon green hiking boots to match your neon green leggings, or was it the other way around?” He snickered and stepped away quickly. “At least I don’t order my clothes from Outdoor Nerds are Us.” “Mean.” He couldn’t help looking down at his tan cargo shorts, plain brown hiking boots, and navy T-shirt. She smiled and batted her eye lashes. He grimaced. I should have known better. Changing the subject, Katrina said, “Sorry your mom has the flu and couldn’t come. It was nice of her to send us anyway, but I am feeling a bit guilty. Maybe we should have stayed home and helped her out.” Murphy was surprised it made him happy that she had referred to his home as her home. She stayed with them so often people thought they were siblings. The two of them found it easier to say they were cousins. It was basically true as their fathers were lifelong friends and the families were extremely close. “My dad’s coming in this afternoon,” he told her. “He said he will nurse her back to health.” “Your dad sure travels a lot.” “What about your dad? He’s out crabbing all season.” “Not the same, but I guess.” She stopped skipping. Murphy glanced at her and noticed a distant look in her eyes. They made their way to an observation deck close to the tram’s terminal. From there Murphy could see his home across Gastineau Channel in Douglas, Alaska. He could see most of Douglas Island and the snowy tops of the Chilkat Mountains in the distance to the west. They enjoyed the vast and beautiful scenery in silent reverie. Even Hogan seemed taken with the amazing vista. He sat quietly beside Murphy. The pink tip of his tongue protruded from his mouth and wiggled slightly as he breathed. They eventually tore themselves away from the spectacular view and began walking. They passed a gaggle of first graders coming down the path. They were all holding onto a rope and were led by a harried Mrs. Harper. Murphy knew she was new to the Grade School, and this may have been her first field trip. Mr. Able, Murphy’s friend Mikey’s dad, was at the tail end of the rope. Daisey, Mikey’s little sister, was second from the end. As they passed Murphy waved at Daisey and smiled at Mr. Able who rolled his eyes and slumped his shoulders. Mr. Able was a building inspector during the day and he coached a men’s boxing club after work. From his gestures, it was apparent he’d met his match with a half dozen six-year-olds. They passed the gift shop, the theater, and the bar and grill. The tram had delivered them approximately halfway up the nearly four-thousand-foot-high mountain. They stopped to read the large sign mapping the hiking trail routes. Mount Roberts has a number of trails from easy to difficult. They chose a moderate three-mile trek that would take them through spruce forests, boulder-strewn alpine pastures, moss-covered rock glaciers and ending at a small glacier-fed lake in a picturesque mountain valley. They would wind their way back by a different route, one that followed the bubbly brook that drained from the lake. After choosing their route, they set out. Strolling leisurely they following the wide gravel pathway through an alpine meadow. Small streams and waterfalls dotted the landscape. Murphy had a permanent smile plastered on his face. Hogan stopped suddenly, woofed and stood erect. “What is it, boy?” Murphy reached down and scratched his ears. A blur of red fur exploded across the trail a few feet in front of them. Hogan bolted, jerking Murphy from his feet and ripping the leash from his grasp. Murphy landed on his shoulder and his face at the side of the path but immediately sprang to his feet and brushed himself off. His cheeks exploded with a red bloom in his anger and embarrassment. He glanced about frantically and was just in time to see Hogan’s bouncing rear end and stubby tail disappear around a tall rock outcropping in the middle of a nearby meadow. “Hogan, come.” Murphy called but Hogan didn’t come. Murphy repeated his command again and again but there was no Hogan. “Wow.” Katrina appeared to be in awe and somewhat amused by the madcap spectacle she had just witnessed. She repeated herself. “Wow!” As Murphy inspected a small cut on his knee, she plucked a chunk of fuzzy green moss from his hair. He glanced at her and said, “Don’t start.” “I know not of what you speak, oh graceful one.” She smiled demurely and took a step back. “Very funny,” he sneered. “Just help me find the jerk.” “I thought he always did what he was told,” she questioned. “Like, come when he’s called.” “He usually does, but maybe he can’t hear me. Wait here. I’ll go get him.” He didn’t look back and began jogging toward the stone obelisk where he had last seen Hogan’s white rear end disappear from sight. He ran across a grassy meadow strewn with boulders and crumbling spires of decaying rock. At first, he tried not to step on the wildflowers, but there were too many and he cringed as he trampled through a patch of mountain crocus. The meadows were covered in a vibrant blanket that represented a kaleidoscope of color. Murphy rounded the outcropping where Hogan had disappeared and was immediately confused. Stretched before him was a small sloping valley covered in nothing but moss-covered rocks and a vibrant carpet of flowers. There was absolutely nothing for a dog of Hogan’s size to hide behind. “Hogan! Come, boy! Come now.” He called repeatedly but still there was no response. Murphy wandered the tiny valley calling Hogan’s name. Eventually he retraced his steps and arrived back at the last place he had seen his dog. Murphy examined the craggy monolith. It was three times the size of his dad’s big SUV and twice as high as the monkey bars at school. The surface was cracked and porous, but he didn’t see any caves or fissures big enough for a full-grown Boxer to enter. As he circled it, he ran his hands along its surface as though searching for a hidden door. Low Mountain Juniper bushes grew along the base of the north side. He lay down on his stomach and peered under the lowest branches. There he saw an overhang and a space big enough for a fox or a dog. Far back under the shelf, he saw a black hole in the ground. Could this be the fox’s den? Did Hogan follow it down there? He peeled off his backpack, set it against the rock and squeezed his head and shoulders under the pungent branches. He inched toward the dark opening. It was a tight fit and he inched forward, struggling as the low branches dug into his back and tugged at his T-shirt. Grabbing the base of the bush he pulled while pushing with the toes of his boots. Slowly he neared the hole in the ground. Repeatedly calling for Hogan he eventually got close to the darkened void. It was a struggle to retrieve his phone from his back pocket and turn on the light, but when he did, he was faced with a steep-sided deep opening about the size of a bicycle tire. No way a fox went down there. How would it get out? There was another recess on the other side of the hole. It was a wide crack in the rock that immediately turned a corner that he couldn’t see around, but he spotted a small tuft of reddish fur caught in a tiny crevasse where the opening disappeared around the corner. Both openings were small, but he realized Hogan could have fit in either. Did he follow the fox? Did he fall? “Hogan!” He yelled into the breach. Then he yelled into the cavity across from him. He held his breath and listened. Nothing. *** Excerpt from Murphy and the Mystery of the Outlaw Gold Mine by Bradford D. Smith. Copyright 2026 by Bradford D. Smith. About Author Bradford D. Smith:

Bradford D. Smith

Bradford D. Smith grew up as an only child amongst a household of Huskies and Malamutes. At times, he thought they were his siblings. From the age of two, he lived in Atlin, British Columbia, a historic gold mining town nestled deep in the wilderness just south of the Yukon Border and connected to Alaska by the Juneau ice field. Brad grew up without radio or television in a time before video machines and home computers were common. Books and reading were important entertainment and in the dark, subzero winter months, they became paramount to the sound mental survival of many. Brad’s mom read to him before he was born and throughout his childhood. This instilled an intense curiosity deep within him and an insatiable appetite to satisfy it. Brad read everything he could find and at a young age, he was reading books his mother enjoyed about arctic explorers, prospectors, trappers and first nations people. His latest book, a young adult mystery, Murphy and the Mystery of the Black Skull, was shaped by his own fascination with the mystery genre as a young adult. Updated to fit today’s times, he leans heavily on the style of writing he himself enjoyed as a young teen. This book is sprinkled with real world places and the author’s love of history is quickly exposed in this fast-paced adventure. Brad has lived and worked in many places across Alaska over the years including Juneau. He still works in Arctic Alaska seasonally and lives with his wife in central BC, Canada with their pack of dogs.

    Over on the
ever-lovely Isle of Man, it’s turned out to be the most sensational evening.
The Three Shades, Horace Flaccus, Horace Walpole and Horace Silver are already
there, hovering in the twilight, when PP and Fenella finally arrive on Pansy’s
motorbike. They’re late as usual, but The Three Shades don’t seem to
mind. After all, they do have all the time in the world, don’t they?

The team is
getting together at dusk, at an ancient place where they like to meet when the
weather’s nice. It’s in the middle of the most beautiful circle of prehistoric
standing stones on the island’s southwest. This mystical place is situated on a
remote hillside, one side of which looks across to the mountains and the other
down towards the sea.

Hearing the
vroom of a hot, racing motorbike heading up the hill towards them, the three
ghosts turn their heads expectantly. Pansy, aka PP, parks behind the largest of
the enormous stones.

She appears
first, walking briskly towards the Three Shades, unbuckling, lifting her helmet
off and shaking out her hair. Behind her, Fenella, her older, White witch
partner, picks her way over the rough ground.

‘We just have
to tell all you Horaces straight away!’ says Pansy, getting excited now.
‘Barrett says the ratings for the last show were amazing!’ she gushes, adding,
‘he even told us they were “Earth-shattering!” she grins.

‘Er, would it
be possible for you to explain to us what exactly that means, Ma’am?’ asks the
ever-polite Walpole.

 ‘What it
means, gentlemen,’ says PP, grinning, ‘is that not only are we already getting
a huge worldwide audience, but it’s growing bigger and bigger with every show!’

‘And after the
last one,’ Fenella butts in excitedly, ‘we’ve had so many people trying to sign
up that Barrett has been overwhelmed. His computers and the social media
department can’t cope. He’s having to put on more people every day to handle
it!’

‘Yes, but, um,
what precisely does all of this mean, Ms Pansy?’ asks Flaccus.

‘Look, I’m
sure we explained it to you before, Horace. Don’t you remember? The
viewers of our Supermoon show all over the world are also a part of the
show, right? They’re active participants with their “Cozmics”, says
Pansy.

‘Well, yes, my
dear, you certainly did,’ said Flaccus, with that lovely smile of his. ‘But I’m
afraid that was the part I could never quite understand,’ confesses the Roman
Horace. ‘I’m so sorry,’ he adds, looking seriously embarrassed now.

‘Not to worry
at all, Horace,’ says Pansy gently. Flaccus has always been her favourite, even
though she always enjoys teasing him.

‘Did you know
that on the next show,’ she says, ‘the Supermoon is going to be the
closest it’s been to the Earth for sixty-nine years! Yes! And that
means that if we can add the viewers’ Cozmics together with all of that extra
Moon energy,’ she tells them excitedly, making a fingers-crossed sign.

At that point,
Pansy pauses, grins, and says, ‘Well, just try to imagine the power
involved!’

‘The technical
guys even think we might have enough energy,’ says Fenella, ‘to maybe bring you
back in full colour… and all of you at the same time!’

‘All of us in
colour…  and at the same time?’
says Horace Walpole, getting really excited himself now.

‘Are you sure?’
says Horace Silver, ‘In full colour?’

‘Absolutely!’
says the by-now almost gushing Fenella! ‘Bye-bye to all that fuzzy black and
white stuff, eh?’

They can all
feel the excitement rippling the air between them. The psychic, the witch, and
the three Horaces gathered in the magic circle of prehistoric standing stones.

‘It’s called “collective
mental focus”,
’ says PP. ‘And that means that if it all works out, you
three guys will materialise as psychic energy through me!’

‘And that’d be
sooo cool, baby! Right?’ smiles jazzman Horace Silver.

Fenella grins
again and nods; ‘But, how about this? If we can get enough Cozmics from the global
audience, all three of you Shades may even seem to fully come back to life for
a while!’

This time, all
three of them just stand there, totally gobsmacked!

‘Now, nobody
is certain exactly what will happen,’ says Fel, ‘but whaddya reckon,
gentlemen? Let’s give it a go, eh?’ she gushes.

By now, they’re
all totally in love with the idea… and it shows.

‘I’m afraid I
still don’t quite understand it,’ Flaccus says to her, almost flapping his toga
with excitement, ‘but wouldn’t it be wonderful if it did actually happen?
Especially for me after two thousand years in the shade!’

‘Hey, you
could even really “Seize the day!” says Pansy!

Q: Your new edition of your novel, Three Shades Called Horace, is set on the mystical Isle of Man, but you live in Tasmania. How does living “at the edge of the known world” influence your writing?

A: There’s a distinct atmospheric magic to living on a rugged island like Tasmania. When you are surrounded by untamed wilderness and the vast ocean, the line between reality and the supernatural feels a little thinner. Even though Three Shades Called Horace takes place on the opposite side of the globe on the Isle of Man, that sense of island isolation and mystical fog felt entirely familiar to me. It allows me to lean into both the eerie dread and the dark comedy of being stranded with things that go bump in the night.

Q: Three Shades Called Horace blends paranormal thrills with corporate satire and sharp comedy. What inspired you to mash up these genres?

A: I’ve always believed that the terrifying and the ridiculous go hand in hand. Think about it—if a real ghost showed up on live television today, a media mogul wouldn’t run away screaming; they’d try to monetize it and make it go viral! I wanted to explore that corporate absurdity. Giving a psychic medium a hit TV show featuring three hilariously opinionated, ghosts felt like the perfect canvas to poke fun at modern media culture while still delivering a high-stakes, fast-paced thriller.

Q: Where do you get your inspiration for your ghosts and supernatural elements? Are any of them based on real experiences?

A: Absolutely! I actually spent about a year living in a haunted house in a place called Pratt’s Bottom, in Kent, England. The house was built on top of an old Roman burial ground, and sometimes the energy there got incredibly heavy and bad. But we also had a resident house ghost we called Fred.

Fred was a bit of a character—he actually took a massive liking to my partner, who is Irish. We later found out that before Fred passed away, he had a wonderful Irish nurse, so he clearly retained a fondness for the Irish accent and presence even in the afterlife! Living with that mix of heavy, ancient history and a quirky house ghost with personal preferences is exactly what inspired the tone of Three Shades Called Horace. I love exploring how the paranormal can be simultaneously unsettling, historic, and yet completely normal, in a funny kind of way.

How did you choose the three ghost characters who play such a big role in Three Shades Called Horace?

I chose Horace Walpole, who is the first to appear to Pansy, because I enjoyed his novel Otranto, the first-ever gothic novel to be published, and his 18th century gothic revival house was the inspiration for the look-alike house that the ghosts inhabit on The Isle of Man.

I also enjoy reading the classics, Socrates, Suetonius, and other ancient great men of letters. Poet and satirist Horace Flaccus is up there with the best of them, plus he had a wicked sense of humour.

Horace Silver is one of my all-time favourite jazz musicians and composers. When I read his autobiography “Let’s Get to the Nitty Gritty”

I discovered his family originated in Cape Verde (another island story) and that he had a keen interest in spiritualism. So, another personal choice to complete the trio. Sadly, he died in 2014

Q: Tell us a bit about your free reader magnet short story, and how it connects to your main release.

A: The free short story follows a top fashion model named Silvia who accepts a mysterious assignment at a secluded mansion, only to find her passion for dance twisting into a feverish supernatural obsession. While Three Shades Called Horace leans heavily into dark humour and corporate satire, this short story explores pure gothic suspense and atmospheric tension. I wanted to give readers a bite-sized, high-stakes introduction to how I handle supernatural threats before throwing them into the comedic rollercoaster of the main novel.

One Night Band Stand

By Julia Kent

(Get What You Need, #2)
Publication date: September 30th 2026
Genres: Adult, Comedy, Contemporary, Romance

Who accidentally has a one-night stand with her alumni band director?

Yep. Me.

I know what you’re thinking. Whoops! I slipped on some valve oil and accidentally landed on his baton during a rousing chorus of Stars and Stripes Forever.

That’s not quite how it went.

But the alumni band director is really, really skilled with that baton, if you know what I mean.

So what am I supposed to do now, as I walk into the morning’s rehearsal — three feet from the podium because of course I play piccolo — and find the guy I ghosted on this morning … right there, smiling at me like he remembers exactly what tempo I prefer?

He’s perfect. Too perfect.

He’s a widowed dad of two adorable little kids that — oh, by the way — he forgot to mention.

But I also haven’t mentioned the seventeen-year-old I live with, either. He’s not my boyfriend. I’m his guardian. He’s autistic and non-speaking, and he’s been my whole world since I was nineteen.

I want Mr. Band Director. He wants me. Nothing — not the secrecy, not the awkwardness, not the 500 miles between his life and mine — will make this chemistry stop.

Except for three pesky little things: the secrets we’re hiding from each other. Three very human secrets.

I’ve never felt so seen before. He gets me. I get him. But we’re buried in responsibilities and loyalties that get in the way. When I’m with him, I can play. Really play.

And not just music.

He can’t quit his job and move his kids to be close to me. I can’t uproot a fragile teen who needs round-the-clock care and is still mourning his parents. The odds are stacked against us.

But who ever let that get in the way of love?

There are naked boobies in my bed, and they are not my wife’s.

What have I done?

My body goes cold and hot, skin pulsing against the sheets, blood pooled in morning wood. Wood that rests against my not-wife’s thigh. My eyes widen. My beard itches around my lips, lips that feel raw, my tongue a bit overused at the tip, like I just had sex with –

I cheated on my wife.

I cheated on my wife.

My beautiful, amazing wife who tells me she loves me ten times a day. Who laughs at my stupid music jokes. Who smiles like she’s actually interested in my high school band stories. Who —

Told. Laughed. Smiled.

Past tense, Jared. Two years, two months, four days of past tense.

— is dead.

Stacey’s dead. Right. Damn it.

I close my eyes, jaw tight, inhaling slowly, my nose cold inside, the physicality of it breaking through panic. The unreality of her death still shatters my sleepy self every morning like a car alarm I can’t fully disable, one blissful second of not-knowing, then the loop of grief.

That sour taste. The shock. The anger. The pain, physical and emotional.

Stacey is dead.

Which means I’m not cheating. I’m just in a hotel room with a very naked, incredibly alluring woman who isn’t my wife.

So then who the hell is this in my arms?

She’s cute. Warm. Soft.

So soft.

The arm Ms. Not-Wife is sleeping on went numb in my sleep. I haven’t moved it one millimeter, shoulder locked, neck doing that isometric thing as her weight presses into my bicep. It should be uncomfortable. It isn’t, and somewhere in sleep my hand found her arm and started stroking it. I just realized it’s doing this. My hand likes her.

My cock sure does, too.

I really like the softness. Naked softness takes the liking up several notches.

Another clue this isn’t my wife: I’m on the bathroom side of the bed.

Ms. Not-Wife’s hair is blonde and straight, spread across my arm. Stacey’s was darker, curly, and Stacey had to pee constantly, especially after giving birth to our oldest, Molly. Every apartment, every house, every hotel, every guest room, every beach rental for nineteen years: Stacey got the bathroom side.

The woman in my bed is not Stacey.

The HVAC unit hums on an E-flat that’s four cents flat. Not concert E-flat. An E-flat that vibrates like it’s committing a felony against freon. It is the most passive-aggressive sound in Indiana, and that’s saying a lot, because have you ever gone to a church picnic in this state? Those ladies are lowkey brutal.

The print above the bed is a seashore painting, a Thomas Kincade knockoff, something a lifelong southern Indiana resident thought would evoke Cape Cod but instead makes me think Dungeons and Dragons on acid. It goes with the burnt-orange carpeting somehow. I half expect a Jello-O egg mold as part of the continental breakfast downstairs in the bar where I picked up… this woman.

I actually approached a woman at a hotel bar, and she chose to sleep with me.

Me.

Not-Wife’s hand is on my chest. She has short nails, no polish, the thumb hooked into the dip below my collarbone like she put it there on purpose. Her thumb knows what it’s doing, which is more than I can say for the rest of me. Her ribcage moves into my ribcage every four or five seconds and back out, long even breathing so constant I’ve started matching it without meaning to.

Waking her up means having to talk, and I don’t know what you say after you pick up a woman in a hotel bar and now you’re both naked under the sheets, vulnerable and freaking out a little, yet liking it.

A lot.

Not-Wife smells like vanilla and sex and the chemical-linen scent of every business hotel pillowcase put into circulation since 1994. The bar lighting was bad last night, so I’m seeing things this morning I couldn’t see then: a mole on her cheek. Long dark lashes against it. A dimple at the corner of her mouth that’s there even when she’s not smiling.

She’s gorgeous.

Morning-gorgeous, unadulterated. Her face was not-yet-defined last night, just a woman who was blonde and smiling under bad bar lighting. She has lips I kissed last night, a tongue that danced with mine and tasted so good, and her breasts are smashed against my side like little pets curled up, seeking warmth.

I have forgotten how nice this is.

A person breathing into your neck. A warm softness against your body. Your bare skin against theirs. I took this for granted for too many years, and once it was gone I felt the absence like a phantom limb.

Since 2013, she has sold more than 2.5 million books, with 5 New York Times bestsellers and more than 23 appearances on the USA Today bestseller list. From single dads to cinnamon roll heroes to new adult rock stars, Julia finds a sensual, goofy joy in every contemporary romance she writes. Unlike Shannon from Shopping for a Billionaire, she did not meet her husband after dropping her phone in a men’s room toilet (and he isn’t a billionaire she met in a romantic comedy).

She lives in New England with her husband, three children, and a Havanese dog named Walter. She is the only person in the household with the gene required to change empty toilet paper rolls (Walter gets a pass).
