If someone had told me that one chocolate-covered strawberry would help shape my granddaughter’s future, I probably would have smiled and ordered another omelet.
Serena was three years old when I began taking her to brunch at The Proud Bird, a restaurant beside a runway at Los Angeles International Airport. We would eat, talk, read her favorite books, and watch airplanes climb into the sky. Then she discovered the buffet’s chocolate fountain.
I held her by the waist while she carefully placed a strawberry on a fondue fork and dipped it into the flowing chocolate. Her face changed. Something magical had happened, although neither of us understood it yet.
For several years, chocolate was simply a happy part of our Grandpa Days. As her curiosity grew, we began visiting local chocolatiers. She tasted chocolate made with different percentages of cacao, learned how beans become bars, toured kitchens, met makers, and eventually began making chocolate herself. Today, at thirteen, leaders in the craft chocolate industry have called her “the future of craft chocolate.”
I would love to claim that I saw all of this coming. I did not. My role was to notice her delight, keep listening, and help her take the next step when she was ready.
That is one of the great pleasures of being a grandparent. We do not need to select a grandchild’s passion. We can create the time and safety that allow one to appear. The clue may arrive through a drawing, a song, a question about an airplane, or even a strawberry held over a chocolate fountain.
