Sherlock Scones
I love a good literary pun almost as much as I love a good baked good, which is precisely how the Sherlock Scones came to exist. They are the signature treat at Hawthorne Cove’s Baskerville Bakery, where everything is literary themed and a basset hound will beg for all of your crumbs.
Makes 8 scones
Prep: 40 minutes, bake: 20 minutes, total: 1 hour 15 minutes
Ingredients
Scones
2 cups all-purpose flour
½ cup granulated sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
Zest of 1 lemon
½ cup (1 stick) salted butter, frozen
½ cup buttermilk
1 large egg, cold
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup frozen wild blueberries
Lemon Glaze
1 cup powdered sugar
Juice of ½ lemon
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 400°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and lemon zest in a large bowl.
- Grate the frozen butter directly into the flour mixture. Toss with a fork so every shred is coated.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, and vanilla. Pour into the flour mixture and stir just until combined.
- Gently fold in the frozen blueberries.
- Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured counter and shape it into a disk about 1 inch thick. Cut the disk into 8 wedges.
- Arrange the wedges on the prepared baking sheet and freeze for 15 minutes.
- Bake for 18-22 minutes, until the tops are set and the edges are golden. Allow the scones to cool.
- While they cool, stir the juice of half a lemon into the powdered sugar until smooth.
- Once the scones have cooled (or slightly sooner if you, like me, are impatient), drizzle liberally with the lemon glaze.
