Her own past could be a reporter’s biggest story in this twisting thriller about murder and family secrets by the New York Times bestselling author T.R. Ragan.

Plagued by traumatic childhood memories, crime reporter Sawyer Brooks still struggles to gain control of her rage, her paranoia, and her life. Now, after finally getting promoted at work, she is forced to return home and face her past.

River Rock is where she’d been abandoned by her two older sisters to suffer alone, and in silence, the unspeakable abuses of her family. It’s also where Sawyer’s best friend disappeared and two teenage girls were murdered. Three cold cases dead and buried with the rest of the town’s secrets.

When another girl is slain in a familiar grisly fashion, Sawyer is determined to put an end to the crimes. Pulled back into the horrors of her family history, Sawyer must reconcile with her estranged sisters, who both have shattering memories of their own. As Sawyer’s investigation leads to River Rock’s darkest corners, what will prove more dangerous—what she knows of the past or what she has yet to discover?

STAR SPARK

Pub. Date: May 26, 2020
Publisher: Sparkly Wave
Formats: Paperback, eBook
Pages: 438
Synopsis
Everyone Saytera knows can
conjure fire, but all she can do is create darkness.
In search for answers about
her destiny and who she is, she leaves her island for the first time—and almost
gets killed. On the run and with no way to return home, she finds refuge in a
military academy. Problem is, she can’t even fire a gun–they just don’t work
with her. No kidding, right? She’s got an issue with fire. And nobody can know
where she’s from and what she can do. How can she find her place and her worth
in this reality where none of her talents matter?
Dess lost everything when
his entire family was killed many years ago. Hiding his identity and seen as a
worthless orphan, he beat the odds and became the best cadet in his program.
But that wasn’t enough. Forced on a dangerous job, he’ll go down to the planet
and risk his life in the hopes of bringing peace to his moon.
But he can feel the starfire
running through him. He knows there’s more, there’s magic, and there are
Terens, legendary beings who can manipulate fire. And destiny might just make
him meet one. Problem is, she’s his enemy.
Excerpt:
Lying on her back, Saytera closed her eyes. There was
no cabin, no task, no matterweaving, no upcoming celebration. She took a deep breath
and enjoyed the darkness of her closed eyelids, her breath in and out, the
soothing comfort of the soft earth on her back. Stars in the Universe, stars
within; one body, one soul.
And then she was walking under the stars, heading to
the Blue Beach, where there was a fire. Yansin, Kerely, and some other people
were performing a passing ritual, celebrating a loved one’s release from the
physical body. Kilmara was there. Yansin’s eyes were swollen from crying.
Crying? What would make Saytera’s powerful, wise master so sad?
“Death was part of life and shouldn’t be mourned,” she
always said. Her eyes and her expression told a different story, though. Kerely
held Yansin’s arm and patted her back as if consoling her. This was so strange.
Saytera got close to the scene when they were about to burn a cloth with the
person’s name on it. Whoever had passed had lost their body, perhaps in the
belly of a sea serpent or in the bottom of the sea. The cloth was a
replacement.
There was an S in the beginning of the name. Saytera
ran the names of masters and apprentices in her mind. A few started with S, but
none of them important or close enough to Yansin. Her insides were starting to
cool with a dreadful feeling. Then the cloth turned, allowing her to get a
better look. Her breath got caught in her throat. The name was Saytera.
She gasped and sat up. What had that been? A vision?
Everything was dark and she didn’t know where she was. Hang on. She remembered.
And she had screwed up. All the lamps had been put out.
***
The heavy old-fashioned iron gate and fences did
little to keep Dess out of the Staralloy mansion’s grounds. He knew that place
better than anyone, having run through these trees for so many years, chasing
dreams that had been as real to him as the artificial atmosphere he breathed.
He also knew its security system, having once imagined that there were monsters
chasing him. Good times. Now the monsters rarely left him—they were in his
mind.
About Day:

Day Leitao is originally from
Brazil and currently lives in Montreal, Canada. She loves the ocean and going
to the beach, and hopes she can visit one again soon. A lot of her summer
childhood spent by the sea and sometimes even on islands provided inspiration
for some of the settings in Star Spark.

My Review

Wow. I started reading this and couldn’t put it down. I’m always interested in books about archaeological adventures and this one had such a wicked title and mysterious description, I just knew it was gong to be fun.

There’s quite the cast of characters, and some had differing agendas. I had a feeling things were going to go sideways and they did.The author did a great job of filling in the background on his characters in just the right places in the story.

And there’s also something very strange about the dig. The deeper they go, the stranger and more dangerous it gets. So many things happened and I kept picturing them in my mind. Some times I had to stop and ponder what I would do too. It’s easy to think you’d be calm and cool, but I would probably be the ninny who goes running off screaming into the dark to meet a sticky end. LOL

I’ve enjoyed some of Brian’s other books and this was just as thrilling. And I’m still thinking about the ending. It’s a surprising twist.

Ashes And Blood
.
by Katie Zaber
.
,
Synopsis
.

“I’ll start at the beginning. Long ago, before roads, before we built structures, before medicine was discovered, before the government was created, before man gained any knowledge, there were The Five. Independent from each other, The Five had a mutual respect for one another. They knew their roles in the world and their duty. They were gods…”

An adventure begins when an otherworldly tree captures the attention of Megan and her friends. The environment morphs around them, transferring them to an exotic planet. Stuck in a rural town still maimed by the plague, a chance encounter with a familiar face gives Megan and her friends some security during their adjustment period.

While settling into new, promising lives, they are attacked and stalked by planet Dalya’s humanoid inhabitants, who focus on Megan. One dark night, after an epic, magical attack, the Fae King’s knight is sent to fetch Megan. When she wakes up a prisoner, she learns that there is much more to this strange world, and it is oddly more like her own than she ever would have expected.

Check out this glimpse inside:

Megan

Today has been a whirlwind, and I’m not looking forward to tonight. I’m positive the elite members of society will flaunt their latest ensembles. A competition among the wealthy to win a proverbial pat on the back for the best dressed. A sport for the rich. They won’t work up a sweat—that’s for the poor. Instead, they compete with wits and money. Women prancing around wearing cage ball gowns, adorned with priceless jewels. Their main goal is to uncover juicy gossip while competing for the wealthiest bachelor. Men swirling this world’s version of expensive scotch talk business and watch women swoon. It can’t be very different from Earth’s aristocratic affairs, not that I ever attended. Movies and the internet displayed enough information to know what to expect.

I had assumed it would be a rather humdrum affair, but my opinion changes quickly, standing before the colossal golden doors. Realization hits me. I am so naïve.

It feels like I’m walking into a fairy tale, but the darker Brothers Grimm version.

Beautiful, handcrafted, golden double doors depict a grand party. Intricate artwork chiseled into the doors displays two long banquet tables of food, roasts on fancy platters, piles of vegetables, and dainty desserts. Between the buffet tables, people adorned with masquerade attire dance. They wave, inviting everyone to the party. Guests laugh, drink, and enjoy themselves under the watchful king. The artwork depicts the king having fun, but there’s no doubt in my mind that he studies everyone, meticulously watching individuals, judging their personality, appearance, and demeanor while in his presence. A crooked smile peels his lips back—it hints at his sly and cruel nature. I can’t help but look at the doors and realize this is a perfect portrayal of what awaits me.

Instead of a warm welcome, it’s a stern warning.

Killing Time

A Dodie O’Dell Mystery

by Suzanne Trauth

Killing Time (A Dodie O’Dell Mystery)
Cozy Mystery
6th in Series
Publisher: Lyrical Press (June 2, 2020)
Number of Pages: 215

With Halloween just around the corner, Dodie O’Dell is making preparations to transform the Windjammer Restaurant on the Jersey Shore into a haunted house, while the Etonville Little Theatre is staging Dracula. But casting the titular Transylvanian is proving challenging. The amateur actors in the company are not shy about chewing the scenery, but who among them can convincingly sink their fangs into a victim’s neck? When a mysterious newcomer with a transfixing Eastern European accent lands the part, rumors that he might be an actual vampire start to take flight—not unlike the bat who’s recently been spotted in the town park.

But everyone’s blood really runs cold when a stranger is found in the cemetery with a real stake in his heart. Dodie decides to put her Halloween theme menu on the back burner and stick her neck out to bring the killer into the light of day. She’d better keep her wits about her, though—or Dodie may be the next one to go down for the Count . . .

Enjoy this peek inside:

“It sure looks haunted,” Edna murmured to no one in particular, to the cast of Dracula in general. They were grouped around her on the sidewalk that ran past the old Hanratty place that Carlos and Bella had rented. I’d never been inside though once I’d driven by it when I first moved to Etonville on my way out of town. The house stood on half an acre of scruffy lawn with patches of dried dirt, surrounded by a few straggly trees—minus leaves at this time of the year—and no neighbors. The nearest houses were on a side street some distance away. The three-story building looked as if it might collapse at any moment, its outer walls covered with weathered, gray shakes, the steps to the front door supported by concrete building blocks. There was no handrail. Light leaked out of windows on the first floor. Curtains covering small, circular panes on the third story—an attic room?—quivered. Was someone up there watching us? I shivered. A turret rose upward from the right side of the structure, giving the house a smidge of outdated dignity. A drain pipe dangled loosely from the gutter.

“Let’s go.” Penny corralled actors and nudged everyone forward to the front door. There were six company members, Renfield saying he’d be along later, plus Penny, Lola, Pauli, and me. Strength in numbers.

We crept across the porch cautiously, aware of the creaking beneath us as the flooring shifted with each individual’s footsteps. Penny put out a hand to knock on the door. Before she could hit knuckles to wood, it flew open. “Welcome everyone!” Bella stood in the doorway, a silhouette backlit by muted foyer lighting.

Behind her Carlos stood silently, observing the group huddled in his entryway, like deer caught in headlights.

Lola took the lead, moving graciously into the house. “Thank you. So nice of you to invite us to your home.”

I’m not sure what the members of the Etonville Little Theatre were expecting. Given the exterior and location of the Hanratty homestead, I anticipated something out of a late-night classic horror film.
