Reading, Read, Peaceful, Woman, Dusk, Outside, Outdoors

This is my own version of a weekly book haul and all things new on fuonlyknew.

I’m also linking up with The Sunday Post hosted by Kimberly @Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

~~~~~
Some chit chat.
Fist things first. I probably sound like a broken record but I have to say I’m sorry. I’ve barely managed to visit any posts this week. With many calling out sick and some leaving to return to college and school, I’ve had to work some grueling hours. Just so tired I struggle to crack open my computer. Good thing I had some tour posts scheduled or my blog would have been silent. I promise to share more content than just tours when things calm down. I’ve read some seriously good books and want to tell you all about them!
We’ve had so much rain the past couple of weeks. Guess what I spied today. Here’s a hint. It’s large, round and bright and hangs in the sky! LOL
Stay safe and take care!
Synopsis:
.
What is the price of passion? What is the power of love?
Meet Martha Beck, a young nurse dedicated to healing others, until her own hurting heart lured her down a darker path. Loneliness led her to Raymond Fernandez, but love led her all the way to the electric chair.
This is the tragic story of the Lonely Heart Killers.
Genre: True Crime Published by: JT Hunter Publication Date: May 15th 2020 Number of Pages: 210 ISBN: 9798646112720 Purchase Links: Amazon | Goodreads
Read an excerpt:
.
ONE On an otherwise mundane March day, a peculiar piece of paper arrived in Martha Beck’s office mailbox. It came with the usual medical correspondence and junk mail, giving no indication of its importance. Yet, this one particular envelope would change Martha’s life forever. The envelope arrived on a cool afternoon, the temperature hovering just below 60, the highest it had climbed all day in the Pensacola area of the Florida Panhandle. But Martha was not in the mood to enjoy the weather. She was still down in the dumps about her recently finalized divorce from Alfred Beck, a Pensacola bus driver who had married her when she was six months pregnant with another man’s child. Although she had been separated from Alfred since May 1945, nearly two years earlier, the formal entry of their divorce had the nearly 27-year-old Martha feeling like an old maid doomed to live out the rest of her life alone. Martha was not unique in that respect in post-World War II America. With well over a million more women than men, the United States population of the mid and late 1940’s left many lonely women in its wake. A visit from Elizabeth Swanson, one of the nurses she supervised at the Crippled Children’s Home, temporarily distracted Martha from feeling sorry for herself. She considered Elizabeth her closest friend. When Elizabeth knocked on her office door, Martha had just started going through the mail. As the two engaged in the latest gossip and friendly chit-chat, Martha resumed sorting through the assortment of envelopes. The first was an advertisement from a Jacksonville company selling medical equipment. She quickly flipped past it as well as a few other pieces of junk mail until a mysterious envelope caught her eye. It was made of thin, pale-brown paper with the name, Mrs. Martha Jule Beck, typed prominently on the front. “What’s this?” she asked, the question directed more to herself than her friend. “What is what?” Elizabeth replied, sipping from a mug of coffee. “This . . . this odd envelope,” Martha said, holding it up to show her. “Beat’s me,” Elizabeth remarked coyly. “I wonder who sent you that.” “I’m sure I don’t know,” Martha remarked, her curiosity now piqued. She turned the envelope over to inspect it further, and seeing nothing hinting at its contents, opened it to find a thin, paper pamphlet inside. It was a promotional mailing and application for the Standard Correspondence Club, one of many “lonely hearts clubs” operating across the country. The return address gave Standard’s location as Grave Lake, Illinois. LONELY?, the pamphlet asked in large, bold letters, Let us help you find that certain someone. Join old reliable Club, 50 years of dependable, confidential service. Correspondents most everywhere seeking congenial mates, proven results. Interesting photos, descriptions FREE. There were several pictures of women spaced throughout the page, each next to a testimonial about a happy marriage brought about by contacts made through the club. “Now why on earth would they send this to me?” Martha wondered aloud, taking a little offense that such a “lovelorn club” would be contacting her. Elizabeth’s coyness now morphed into a broad grin that spread across her face. “Now why on earth would they send this to me?” Martha wondered aloud, “I have a confession to make,” Elizabeth said as she started giggling. “I wrote the club and asked them to send you information and an application.” Martha studied her friend’s face, deciding whether she was serious. “Whatever for?” she asked in a tone matching the astonishment in her eyes. Still giggling, Elizabeth moved to a chair closer to Martha and sat down beside her. “I originally did it as a joke,” she explained, “but the more I thought about it, the more I decided that you should give it a try. Three of my daughters are writing to me that they have met men through this correspondence club, and this is the very same club that I met my husband through thirty years ago. And after all, what do you have to lose?” Martha rolled her eyes. “I may be a little lonely,” she acknowledged, “but I’m not THAT desperate.” She glared with some annoyance at Elizabeth. “I swear, sometimes I really wonder what’s going on in that head of yours.” Martha tossed the pamphlet onto a pile of papers stacked on the side of her desk and made no more mention of it for the rest of their time together. But the seeds of intrigue had already been planted in her mind. Later, after Elizabeth had left, Martha retrieved the discarded pamphlet and read it more closely. Part of the pamphlet contained a form asking her to fill out information about herself and write a letter detailing what kind of men she would like to meet. Sitting down at her desk, she carefully completed the form and took her time crafting the letter, being sure to mention how people often commented that she was witty, vivacious, and oozed personality. She also emphasized that she was a trained nurse with her own pleasant apartment. When she was satisfied with what she had written, Martha carefully folded the papers, enclosed $5.00 for the required membership fee, and licked the envelope to seal it. That evening, she dropped it in a mailbox on her way home from work. ***** Years later, when asked whether she had experienced any misgivings about joining a lonely hearts club, Martha candidly replied, “Yes, as soon as I’d put the letter in the mailbox, I began thinking I’d made a mistake.” Questioned about what kind of man she hoped to meet through the club, Martha took a little more time before answering. “Well, I don’t know,” she confessed. “I guess I hadn’t thought about it much. But I sure didn’t think I’d ever meet anyone like Ray.” *** Excerpt from Tortured With Love by J.T. Hunter. Copyright 2020 by J.T. Hunter. Reproduced with permission from J.T. Hunter. A realm of monsters. A world of lies. She
belongs to both.
.
My name is Emberly, and everything I’ve ever
been told is a lie.
Monsters don’t exist. Wrong.
The nightmarish spectrum world is just my
imagination. Wrong.
In a few months, I’ll finally be free. Wrong.
It takes being dragged to a secret training
academy in the mountains to unravel the truth. My captors–an elite race of
angel-born warriors called Nephilim.
The deadliest of them all is an arrogant shape
shifter, Steel. He’s gorgeous, lethal, hot-headed . . . and convinced I’ll be
the death of them all.
Maybe he’s right. As soon as I show up, the
monsters that have haunted me my entire life breach the academy walls. My only
hope of saving my new friends is learning how to control my powers, but when a
stunning betrayal hurts someone I care about, I have an impossible choice.
Stay and fight for a place to belong . . . or
decide once and for all that I’m better off alone.
Enter the spectrum world, a realm in-between
worlds where shadow beasts draw blood, reality is a maze of twisted lights and
sounds, and life goals are whittled down to just one: survive.
Steel takes a determined step toward me. His hair is
ruffled, his clothes covered in dirt and wet from the ice and snow, his hands
balled into fists. Even without a weapon, he’s a fierce sight to behold. With
golden light kissing his features, he reminds me of a modern-day Apollo,
dressed in a Henley and dark washed jeans.
“It’s you.” His whispered words full of awe and float to me
on a rippling band of light.
I begin to ask what he means, but I catch a sliver of
movement to my left and turn my head in time to see both Forsaken disappear
around the bend of the building.
Instinct says to follow them, but when I take a step in
their direction I’m thwarted by a six-foot-five, raven-haired angel-born.
“They’re going to—” My words die a quick death on my tongue
when Steel’s hand brushes a tangle of hair away from my cheek. The small
contact causes a tremor to work its way through his body.
He closes his eyes and steps into me.
I retreat a step.
“Finally,” he breathes, dipping his head to gently rub the
tip of his nose up the column of my neck before his lips just barely brush my
earlobe.
It’s my turn to shiver.
What is he doing?
my mind screams. And do I care? it
whispers as an afterthought.
Shaking my head out of a confused fog, I take another shaky
step back.
Yes, I do care. The boy must have hit his head harder than I
thought.
“Listen, Steel, we don’t have time for this. You’re not
yourself right now.”
I bring my hands up to push him back. He’s invading my
space—big time.
When I reach forward to give him a shove, he grabs hold of
my wrists and uses my momentum to bring me closer.
The guy has moves, that’s for sure.
One look in his eyes and I can tell he’s not all there. His
lids are lowered to half-mast and his gaze sweeps lazily over my features.
 Steel takes a step
forward, forcing my capitulation until he’s maneuvered me against the rough
bricks. A foreign sensation zips along my spine, as if something heavy is fused
to each vertebrae, weighing me down. I don’t have a chance to investigate
because Steel’s head is dipping again and I have nowhere to move within the
cage of his body.
I freeze, wholly unprepared for the situation. That gives
Steel the perfect opportunity to dive in and take what he wants.
Synopsis
.
I’d made the choice to survive Broken
House. I’d chosen to live instead of taking the very obvious way out. At this
point in my life, I shouldn’t have been surprised that somehow living was more
difficult than my previous ventures to find a way to die. I mean at least I had
my men. Three kings. Three sexy, dominant shifters. What could go wrong with
that? I mean really, what possible conflict could result in having six
possessive, powerful men surrounding me at all times. I had no doubt that in
true Louvre fashion the conflict would show itself at the most inconvenient
time. Unfortunately, that wasn’t all we had to worry about and the weight of
our true situation was heavy and terrifying.
There was a lot we didn’t know. I mean,
had Mr. Black really given up that easily? Somehow I didn’t think that was the
case. Better yet, why the heck does my stalker have such an odd fixation with
origami animals? The most important question though? What the hell was coming
for us that was so bad that a cosmic being had sought me out to warn me?
.
Yeah, so as I said, living was f*cking complicated.
Warning: This PNR slow burn RH contains
dark themes. The book contains substance abuse, violence, swearing, PTSD,
sexual assault, sexual themes (+18), and an array of other dark subject
matters.
“What are we going to do about this guy?”
Because if we weren’t going to kill him, then I needed to beat the shit out of him or
something. Maybe I would just create a nightmare to convince him to never leave
his house. Or, you know, I could fucking kill him.
“We could kill him,” Desmond pointed out clinically, putting away his phone. “Cleaning up
the human loose ends would be a pain, but worth it.”
I inhaled and nodded, considering what he was saying. “I think Lorcan has to give us the
go ahead. I don’t want her thinking that we think she can’t handle her own
problems.”
Desmond nodded and then smiled, a cold, calculating look appearing on his face. “I’ll
have some of my guard stop by later, anyway, just for a talk.”
Right.
I kept my eyes on her as I suggested, “She should meet our guards, just in case we are
ever separated.”
Desmond let out a low rumble but didn’t argue. As we neared the large doors that led to the
outside lunch pavilion, Lorcan looked back at us. Her face was once again
glowing and healthy, her eyes filled with curiosity and a simmering heat that
encouraged me to walk a bit faster.
Possessiveness rolled over me at the sign of her health. I wanted to protect that. Protect
her. I knew her days had been filled with darkness for so long, but that was
before. Before she had people that she could rely on.
“Make sure you do more than talk tonight,” I muttered, shaking my head. “Just don’t kill
him… yet.”
There was no point in acting like I was anything different than the bastard I was, but I had
been trying. This, though, was a clear line. I could tolerate a lot of things,
but hurting Lorcan was not one of them.
The game of pretending I hated her had ended, and now she would just have to deal with my
suffocating attention and overbearing bullshit. I had been in love with this
woman for years now, and I had a lot of shit buried that was starting to
resurface.
I hoped she was ready for that.
Synopsis
In 1868 England, artist Annmar Masterson dreams of owning her own illustration shop, which the city’s ruthless industrial magnate would willing give her—but not for proper work. She flees his loathsome advances and takes advertising work on a farm in a secluded valley.
Life in the countryside turns nineteen-year-old Annmar’s world upside down. Her lifelong fanciful visions of blue threads are every bit as real as the plant and animal shifters hiding their lives from the rest of Victorian England. The secretive folk with their strange powers might not fit Annmar’s proper city ways, but the attentions of shapeshifter Daeryn Darkcoat have Annmar re-thinking how proper she wants to be.
But their timing is wretched. Daeryn is up to his whiskers fighting against a terrifying scourge. If the farm succumbs, Annmar’s job is over. Her magic might help stop the pests…if she can learn to use it properly. If not, she’ll be forced to leave the people she has come to care for and become what she fears most: nothing more than another cog in the city magnate’s gears.
Risky Whiskey
Bohemia Bartenders Mysteries
by Lucy Lakestone
Risky Whiskey (Bohemia Bartenders Mysteries)
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
Publisher: Velvet Petal Press (July 21, 2020)
Print Length: 250 pages
Digital ASIN: B088Q9NW98
Stirring up trouble in New Orleans …
Eager to shake up her drinks and her life, mixologist Pepper Revelle jumps at an invitation to join the elite Bohemia Bartenders. Leader Neil thinks she’ll be the perfect advance gal for his team at a colorful cocktail convention in her hometown of New Orleans, but the job turns out to be more bananas than a drunk monkey. Setting up the key tasting for their distiller client, she and Neil discover their whiskey has gone dangerously bad. But how? And was this shocking poisoning more than an accident?
As Pepper and Neil try to figure out what happened, keep the drinks flowing and help distiller Dash Reynolds survive the weekend, they find themselves the target of increasingly scary attacks. Maybe it’s the danger, or maybe it’s the drinks, but Pepper also can’t help an inconvenient attraction to cocktail nerd Neil as they stir up trouble and try to figure out who’s out to get them — before they’re sliced and squeezed like a lemon twist in a Sazerac.
Risky Whiskey is the first book in the Bohemia Bartenders Mysteries, funny whodunits with a dash of romance set in a convivial collective of cocktail lovers, eccentrics and mixologists. These cozy culinary comedies contain a hint of heat, a splash of cursing and shots of laughter, served over hand-carved ice.
AN ALL-NEW STANDALONE FROM NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR JULIA KENT
I never thought my perp walk would lead to true love.
Then again, I never thought I’d be arrested on RICO charges and hauled away in zip ties on camera for the world to see, minutes after closing the most amazing deal of my career.
And all of it in front of my biggest viral, billionaire wunderkind Ian McRory.
I am broke.
I am disgraced.
I am alone.
I am a sucker.
But the worst part? I have to go back to my hometown and live in my bedroom filled with relics from my childhood.
Lisa Frank never made me so mad before.
Just when I needed a rescue, I got one — in the form of help from my biggest rival.
He can’t bring back my money.
He certainly can’t bring back my reputation or my pride.
But there’s one thing he can bring back to me.
A sense of hope.
Maybe even love.
Ian sees something in me no one else does, and he’s relentless about making me see it, too. As we grow closer, I’m starting to see that while my entire life used to be a lie, the truth is staring me in the present — and it’s a truth I like very, very much, hot eyes and gorgeous smile and all.
But I have to be careful.
I can’t be too —
That’s right.
Hasty.
The final book in the USA Today bestselling Do-Over Series (Fluffy, Perky, Feisty), as Mallory’s sister, Hastings “Hasty” Monahan gets her turn at a happily ever after that starts off with an arrest.
Today is the best day of my life.
I know people say that, and they mean it, but they don’t mean this. My best day is better than anyone else’s. Trust me.
I know.
I’m sitting at a table at Essentialz, a five-star restaurant in San Francisco. Everyone at the table watches me as I tuck the signed paperwork away in my black Bottega Veneta woven leather brief bag.
I, Hastings Monahan, just signed a nine-figure investment deal on behalf of the venture capital firm I work for.
Full partner, here I come.
Of course, lawyers will handle the majority of this. The signatures are symbolic as much as they are legal. But the fellow diners at my carefully crafted table will go back to China with an exciting opportunity for their company, Zhangwa Telecommunications, to enter the North American market with climate-change technology projecting yields that are the best aphrodisiac ever.
As I sip from my glass of Montrachet Grand Cru, I catch the eye of Ming Bannerton, a consultant with Zhangwa whose father is a high-ranking U.S State Department official in China, a woman who has a hunger for financial success that I can spot in anyone in three seconds flat. There’s something special about a fellow hustler–and when I use the word hustler, I don’t mean it pejoratively.
People who hustle get things done.
We connect. We network. We pattern match. We ruthlessly apply what we intuitively feel to what we operationally know in order to produce optimal outcomes.
In short–we hustle.
And we win.
But in competition, there can only be one winner.
One.
Tonight, I’m it.
Her smile mirrors mine, red lips stretched over perfectly white teeth that are as straight as a new picket fence. The smile doesn’t reach her eyes, but an intensity infuses her. She’s about five years younger than me, with a knowing eye that tells me we need to stay in touch. Someday soon, she may shoot past me, and that’s where all the legwork pays off.
In this business, you network down as well as you network up, if you want to get anywhere.
And the manila folder resting in my brief bag, the one that feels like a warm gold ingot pressed against my lips? That, ladies and gentlemen, is how you get somewhere.
“Where is Burke?” Mr. Zhao Bai asks, his head at a slight tilt, a gesture of genuine curiosity as his eyes survey me, looking for information that doesn’t come directly from my mouth. He’s the youngest of the four men at the table, a fast talker who looks around the room like he’s a mob boss. Negotiating with him took a steady hand I didn’t know I possessed, but now I understand.
Burke is part of the deal, and I didn’t realize it.
The contracts are signed, though. That makes my husband an off-the-books addendum. No matter what, this is my accomplishment.
My husband, Burke Oonaj, is one of the hottest market makers in finance right now. Even he will have no choice but to be impressed by the deal I’ve just put together.
But the inquiry about my husband makes my uterus fall.
And it’s not like he’s around to catch it.
“Good question,” I say before taking another sip of wine, needing to buy myself a smidgen of space and time. I only need a split second.
Normally.
For some reason that I can’t explain, my emotions are tangling in my mind, and that’s an unpredictable variable I have to weed out.
Fast.
My heart feels strangely heavy in my chest, a sense of dread filling me that has no right to be here. This is MY night, I tell that sense of dread. This is MY deal. This is my culmination of six years of careful work, all coming together, right now.
Go away, dread.
But Mr. Zhao’s question is a good one, because Burke isn’t answering any of my texts or emails or phone calls, and hasn’t for the last three days.
My husband has disappeared.
Not literally, of course, because husbands don’t just do that. Business travel can be intense. Plenty of stretches of time have gone by without hearing from him. They involved twenty-four hours or less, though.
Not eighty-one hours and thirteen minutes.
Not that I’m counting.
I can’t admit any of this to anyone at this table, of course, so instead, I give what my pattern-matching brain tells me is the optimal answer, designed to make me look good.
“Burke’s fine,” I say with a grin, the glass of wine still full enough to make more sips look like an appropriate response. “He sends his best regards. He would have been here tonight, but… you know.”
Two of the men share a look I don’t like. It’s a fleeting glance, the type that is practiced and meant to look like nothing. You think I’m paranoid, that I’m inventing it all?
Wrong.
I’m in a state of hyperarousal.
No, not the sexual kind. Haven’t felt that in a long time, at least not with Burke. My hyperarousal is based around the stress hormones pumping through me from the excitement of what I just accomplished.
Me. Myself. Alone.
Independent of Burke.
As workday smiles stretch to become the more casual, intimate grins of people enjoying bottle after bottle of excellent wine, I loosen up. The answer I gave them sufficed. We can move on.
My body feels numb and excited at the same time. I’m on top of the world. The pinnacle.
I am Peak Hastings.
Which is why, when the maître d’ approaches my side, I don’t pick up on the gravity of his whisper. No one would. Because learning that my credit card has been declined for this business dinner is definitely not part of the plan, and the areas of my brain assigned to processing language literally can’t comprehend it.
“It’s what?” I whisper, standing carefully, legs still steady, my alcohol consumption measured, even if my tablemates have made their way through more wine than an entire wedding party back home.
The maître d’, José, gives me a wide-eyed but polite look. “I’m sorry, Ms. Monahan. This has never happened before when you’ve dined with us. But the credit card company was very firm. You cannot use this one.”
Mr. Zhao gives me an inquiring look. My stomach sinks. Did he overhear?
“Will you all excuse me?” I tell them, hating the disruption, my legs turning into two steel beams covered in chilled skin.
“Something must be wrong with the credit card processor,” I snap at the maître d’ as I hurry away from my group. I want to get the taint of this failure out of the way and get back to my stellar success.
Once we’re out of sight of my table, I rifle through my purse and find another business credit card. “Use this one. And let me be very clear, to you and to your boss, that this is absolutely, abjectly unacceptable.”
He inserts the card, chip side in. “I realize this, Ms. Monahan, but we cannot…”
Beep.
He stares at the credit card terminal.
I read the display upside down. “Declined!” I hiss. “This is impossible! That card has no limit!”
“Perhaps you’ve had your identity stolen, or there are fraud alerts on your account? Perhaps you’re the victim of a financial crime?” José suggests.
“I can’t be the victim of a financial crime!” I snap at him. “I’m a financial expert! This doesn’t happen to people like me. Here!” I shove a third company card at him. This one better work.
I only have one more.
My mind races ahead, conjuring contingency plans, even as my cheeks burn with shame.
Shame.
Why would I feel shame for someone else’s mistake? And yet, there it is, and I have to override it fast. Because if I don’t, it gets a toehold.
And that is the fastest way to lose your edge.
José closes his eyes and lets out a sigh through his nose, a split second before the display terminal beeps.
Again.
“Your computer system is down,” I declare, pulling out the fourth card and my phone, texting my office manager. Maybe something went wrong. Maybe José is right. Maybe we were hacked. But this is surreal enough to let the dread come inside me and have a seat, as it decides whether to become an overnight guest.
It doesn’t matter. What matters is that I’m staring at a mid-four-figure bill that I owe, right now, and have no way to settle.
This cannot be happening.
As he runs the fourth card, the main door opens. My spine straightens, calves stretching tall, and not just from the five-inch heels I’m wearing.
I know that man.
I hate that man.
And he’s the last person on Earth I want to see in the middle of this debacle.
Ian McCrory cannot see me like this.
A Lady’s Guide To Mischief And Murder
A Countess Of Harleigh Mystery
In Dianne Freeman’s charming Victorian-era mystery series, Frances Wynn, the American-born Countess of Harleigh, finds her sister’s wedding threatened by a vow of vengeance.
London is known for its bustle and intrigues, but the sedate English countryside can host—or hide—any number of secrets. Frances, the widowed Countess of Harleigh, needs a venue for her sister Lily’s imminent wedding, away from prying eyes. Risings, George Hazleton’s family estate in Hampshire, is a perfect choice, and soon Frances, her beloved George, and other guests have gathered to enjoy the usual country pursuits—shooting, horse riding, and romantic interludes in secluded gardens.
But the bucolic setting harbors a menace, and it’s not simply the arrival of Frances’s socially ambitious mother. Above and below stairs, mysterious accidents befall guests and staff alike. Before long, Frances suspects these “accidents” are deliberate, and fears that the intended victim is Lily’s fiancé, Leo. Frances’s mother is unimpressed by Lily’s groom-to-be and would much prefer that Lily find an aristocratic husband, just as Frances did. But now that Frances has found happiness with George—a man who loves her for much more than her dowry—she heartily approves of Lily’s choice. If she can just keep the couple safe from villains and meddling mamas.
As Frances and George search for the culprit among the assembled family, friends, and servants, more victims fall prey to the mayhem. Mishaps become full-blooded murder, and it seems that no one is safe. And unless Frances can quickly flush out the culprit, the peal of wedding bells may give way to another funeral toll. . . .
