My Review

I’ve read most of Hunter Shea’s books and the tile for his new book was a warning for me. Dark things were ahead. And boy, were they. Once I got past meeting the characters and learning why they had to visit the crumbling old resort, the running and screaming began.

Hunter is known to me for killing off his characters. Usually in horrific fashion. This happened again in Slash. But it felt different. Yes, he killed some off. And yes, they died horrifically. But there was a whole lot in between deaths. They struggled to survive against a being that was a huge mystery to them. They had to uncover the history behind it. One thing they knew, they had to stick together in order to get out alive.

This is the meat and bones of the story for me. Throw a bunch of friends together, add in a maniacal killer, and let’s see how strong those friendships are. In between the blood and body parts strewn throughout, you get to know these characters. Their strengths and weaknesses. You want them to live through this. But, remember what I said about Hunter killing off his characters. Ouch.

The story has a nice pace in the beginning. Every page has something important to reveal. Then the real horror begins. The Wraith is a mystery at first. Once I found out his history, which was crazy evil, I was fascinated to see how it would end. I really wish I could talk about that. All I can say is, if you enjoy horror stories that have the feel of those old slasher films, Hunter gives you his own unique spin, and I recommend you give this a go. Hang on to your hat. The train to nightmares has left the station.

Synopsis

My Review

I start every day thinking about something to be grateful for. And then I write it down, along with a few words about things I’m happy about. It’s a great way to start the day positive. So I was excited to get my hands on The Thankful Unicorn.

What a delightful little book. Each page has a list where you can write down what you are grateful for, your dreams and goals, what you love about yourself and your affirmations, along with a quote. The opposite page has whimsical illustrations of a unicorn which you can color. I broke out my big kit of colored pencils and markers and transformed the pictures into sparkling, magical wonder.

While this may appear to be a children’s book. I believe it is something for all ages. It feels good to open it up and read what I had written and be inspired to make the most of each day. And I love unicorns!

Brice entered the glass portal. Whoosh! She closed her eyes as a machine sucked her thin suit and headgear from her body. And then the safety lights flashed, and she entered the safe house.

Its coolness was a welcome respite from the heat outside. Naked, she sat on a pod-shaped chair, closed her eyes, and waited for the rest of the ritual. A squadron of tiny cleaning machines whirred around her, thin brushes entering the crevices of her face and body, scrubbing them clean of toxic ash. When they flew away, spray jets descended from the ceiling and water cascaded down, washing away any debris. When the safety lights flashed again, she stood and stepped forward into drying gusts of air. With the flash of a single green light, she was cleared to leave the portal.

Her dark blue suit was hanging inside a cabinet by the door. As she dressed, she tried not to think how much she loathed this stiff, ugly, utilitarian garment. Instead, she turned her focus to the notes she would write about the Agni landscape. “Day 15. Han Machina survivor #2817 interview notes in Annex V. Still no daylight due to smog, pollutants enter the crevices of the body’s orifices, need for a mask 24/7. UNINHABITABLE.”

As always, a thin whirring Bee, her mechanical electronic monitor, had stood by during the cleaning ritual and was now hovering at its usual arm’s-length distance from her head. That soft, buzzing noise was her constant companion. There was nothing she could do that wouldn’t be observed by the Colony. She turned away from the Bee, as if to block out its presence.

What was your motivation behind Hall-O-Ween!? Why did you want to write it?

“Hall-O-Ween!” was a follow-up to my other books, “Two!” and “Three!”, which were somewhat autobiographical accounts of life with my twin toddler boys. With those, I wanted to make something for my kiddos to read and hold onto, but they also were a way for me to commemorate their milestones (as crazy as those times were). For “Hall-O-Ween!”, I wanted to continue the series, but also weave in some of my memories and fantasies of Halloween as a kid. Halloween was always one of my favorite times growing up. My dad was always helping my brothers to decorate the front yard (in competition with one of the neighbors) and my mom would help us make our costumes. I wanted to bring all of that excitement to life in my book.

Some chit chat.

This has been a busy week for me. I’ve been writing a bunch of reviews for my October feature. I know have 18 written out of 31. I’ve also been watching some horror shows and movies as I hope to include them in my feature too. I’m surprised I haven’t had any nightmares….yet!

Other than that, it’s been work and heat. The temps are back into the 90s and I’m still squeezing in some pool time. I’ve especially been enjoying the pool right before dark. The water is silky and warm. I stay in so long that I feel like a tea bag in a hot cuppa. LOL Delicious!

Later that afternoon, Ramsey was at home putting together a lasagna for dinner.

“Dad.” Rocky sat at the kitchen table, a pack of colored pencils beside him as he worked on his latest comic book sketch. His dirty blond hair had grown in the two months he had been in New Orleans. Ram added getting him to the barber to his mental to do list before taking him and his sister back to Dallas.

“Yeah?” He slid the pan into the oven and then turned, leaning against the counter to look at his teenage son. Jesus, how could he be thirteen already? Ram could still remember how tiny he’d been, and just how terriﬁed he’d been of taking care of a toddler on his own after he and their mom had split when Rocky was two. It did something to him, staring at the boy on the cusp of manhood, and thinking back over the years. He would hit a growth spurt in the next year or so and be as tall as Ram.

“Do you think it’s possible that aliens exist?” Rocky asked, never looking up from his drawing. Ram had no idea how the kid came by his artistic talent. Certainly not from him. Although Rocky’s Aunt Becca, Ram’s baby sister, was an artist. So it was deﬁnitely there in the family tree.

“I think it’s a distinct possibility.” This planet had enough problems without adding aliens to the mix. Talk about throwing the world into a panic.

“Then why haven’t they come to Earth yet?” Rocky asked, lifting his face. It always ﬁlled Ram with wonder when he looked at Rocky and saw a younger version of himself in everything but eye color. Rocky’s eyes were a clear jade, just like his mom’s.

“And how do you know that they haven’t?” he teased his son.

“Because we would know. With technology the way it is, someone would have gotten a picture or video that proves their existence.”

“Have you considered the possibility that if they ﬂew billions of lightyears to get here, it’s more likely that their technology is much more advanced than ours and they would be able to hide from detection?” Ram said with a smile hovering over his lips.

“Yeah, for all we know, the aliens left you with us at birth. It would explain a lot.” Hurricane Angela waltzed into the kitchen, her smartphone in her hand, and grabbed an apple from the fruit basket on the counter. Ram sighed. His daughter was ﬁfteen going on twenty-ﬁve, with enough sass to outlast Satan.

“Then you should watch yourself. We like to suck out human souls at night. It would explain a lot about you,” Rocky countered.

Angela rolled her eyes. “You’re such a dork.”

“Ang, watch it. You can talk to your friends for an hour and then screen-time is done for the night,” Ram stated, hearing echoes of his own dad as he said it. Ram didn’t know how, but he had turned into his father. He’d like to think of himself as much cooler, down to earth, and more level headed. But yeah, it had happened. And the thing was, Ram loved being a dad—although the teenage years were going to give him a head full of gray hair.

Nancy Lynn Jarvis was a Santa Cruz, California, Realtor® for more than twenty years before she fell in love with writing and let her license lapse.

After earning a BA in behavioral science from San Jose State University, she worked in the advertising department of the San Jose Mercury News. A move to Santa Cruz meant a new job as a librarian and later a stint as the business manager for Shakespeare/Santa Cruz at UCSC.

Nancy’s work history reflects her philosophy: people should try something radically different every few years, a philosophy she applies to her writing, as well.
