This is my own version of a weekly book haul and all things new on fuonlyknew.

I’m also linking up with The Sunday Post hosted by Kimberly @Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

Some chit chat.

As I’m typing this the thunder is rumbling, the lightening is flashing and it’s pouring outside. This summer has been a wash out. I miss the sun. But, these rainy days have me getting my house cleaned and keeping me indoors where it’s nice and cool. And the couch and me are enjoying each other’s company. I’ve watched so much television and read so many books that my eyes are crossing. I think I’m going to go take a nap. I love to fall asleep to the sounds of a storm.

Have a fabulous  Sunday and brand new week!

Welcome to my Saturday Screams where I share books that, well, make you scream!

Today I’m doing something different. Instead of sharing a review or two, I’m sharing some books for my Spooktacular Reviews that I did last year for Halloween. I share a review for a scary story each day of the month and I’m using some books from my TBR pile this year. This is my partial list so far, not including some ARCs and review books that I’ll be sprinkling in.

I’m also looking for suggestions, so lay em on me! I’m especially looking for some good werewolf, haunted house and creatures books.

Synopsis

An ancient power long kept dormant stirs in the shadows once more as one boy embarks on a quest to earn his freedom and the freedom of his world!

Slashing Mona Lisa
by D.M. Barr
Genre: Mystery, Romantic Suspense

Killer body or body killer? When fat shaming backfires…
Most people are dying to lose a few pounds. Not so in Slashing
Mona Lisa
, where it’s the weight-loss advocates who
are losing their lives.
Whenever Terry Mangel’s body acceptance revival meeting rolls into town,
local diet execs and “fat shamers” turn up dead, often in
grotesque, ironic ways. All single murders in small suburbs, no one’s
noticed the pattern…until now.
Rookie journalist Camarin Torres is a crusader against discrimination,
partially to assuage the guilt she feels over the suicide of her
obese, bullied twin sister. She reluctantly accepts a job offered by
handsome publisher Lyle Fletcher, a widower with a vendetta, who sees
Torres as salvation for
Trend, his fledgling fashion magazine.
Torres, however, detests everything the publication stands for,
and joins solely to transform its judgmental, objectifying content.
As an unexpected romance blossoms, the overconfident, justice-hungry
reporter defies orders and infiltrates Mangel’s world—only to find
herself in the crosshairs of a vigilante group targeting the
sixty-billion-dollar diet industry. Unmasking the killer may save her
life but shatter her heart: every clue seems to implicate Fletcher,
her mercurial mentor and lover, as the group’s mastermind.
With a sassy, snarky voice and multi-cultural overtones, Sashing
Mona Lisa
 explores body shaming and its victims:
the disenfranchised who don’t conform
to society’s arbitrary norms, and the lengths they will go to for
love and acceptance.
Content Warning:
contains some strong language, violence, and explicit sexual scenes

WHO IS D.M. BARR?
By day, a mild-mannered salesperson, wife, mother, rescuer of senior
shelter dogs, competitive trivia player and author groupie, happily
living just north of New York City. By night, an author of sex,
suspense and satire.
My background includes stints in travel marketing, travel journalism,
meeting planning, public relations and real estate. I was, for a long
and happy time, an award-winning magazine writer and editor. Then
kids happened. And I needed to actually make money. Now they’re off
doing whatever it is they do (of which I have no idea since they
won’t friend me on Facebook) and I can spend my spare time weaving
tales of debauchery and whatever else tickles my fancy.
The main thing to remember about my work is that I am NOT one of my
characters. For example, as a real estate broker, I’ve never played
Bondage Bingo in one of my empty listings or offed anyone at my local
diet clinic.
But that’s not to say I haven’t wanted to…

But when she needs to persuade a big client that she’s capable of planning the celebrity wedding of the year, she’s willing to go as far as pretending to be engaged herself to her best friend’s older brother.

Welcome to The Kid’s Korner.

Today I’m taking  to a fantastical place……

Alice’s Magic Garden

Before The Rabbit Hole and her Adventures in Wonderland

by Henry Herz

Illustrated by Natalie Hoopes

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Illustrated Children’s Book / Fantasy

My Review

Before Alice ever fell down the rabbit hole she lived a colorless life at a boarding school where the other girls didn’t like her and made her life miserable. Then she discovered the magic garden, sparkling in all the glorious colors of the rainbow, and some secret benefactors that, through her acts of kindness, became her friends.

Author Henry Herz crafts a charming and magical tale of Alice in her younger years.  Simply told, he shares through his character’s how kindness wins the day. And the warm, alluring illustrations of Natalie Hoopes will have you pausing to indulge in the delicate details.

If you’ve had the pleasure of meeting Alice before, you’ll recognize some of the character’s in these pages. If you haven’t, you’ll delight in making their acquaintance.

Did I enjoy Alice’s Magic Garden? Yes, it bedazzled me. Would I recommend it? Most certainly!

Synopsis

Curiouser and curiouser!

In this imaginative prequel to Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Alice finds herself at a gray, dreary boarding school that is decidedly up the rabbit hole. From the relentless clocks to the beastly students, Alice’s world is void of color and cheer–until Alice finds a secret garden and begins tending its wilting inhabitants. When Alice’s love touches an ordinary caterpillar, a lorry bird, and a white rabbit, magical things will happen–and that, as you know, is just the beginning of the story. Filled with literary allusions and clever nods to its classic roots, Alice’s Magic Garden is a delightful prequel that begs an escape to the whimsy of Wonderland.

Nobody Said It’s Be Easy

by Patty Blount

Nobody Said cover

Synopsis

This is Patty’s third contemporary romance with Tule Publishing Group, inspired by a TV commercial in which a Dad says, “With four daughters, I’ve come to terms with the fact that I’ll always have nail polish on my fingers.”

It’s been two years since former engineer Gabriel Ivers lost his wife and accepted a job as a building superintendent to be home with his children. His focus is being both mom and dad to his girls, until the beautiful Amelia Blake moves next door and reminds him he’s a man as well as a dad. Just as he begins to hope that his life can once again hold more than homework, chores, and movie-and-manicure nights with his girls, he discovers the reason for the fragility beneath Lia’s warm smile.

Lia is trying to move on with her life after a miscarriage ends all hope for a baby, and a subsequent betrayal destroys her marriage. She’s charmed by her new neighbor with his sparkling manicure, multi-colored hair clips, and his brood of girls, but disturbed by the sexual tension that sizzles between them. Gabe and his daughters remind her of everything she’s always wanted and it would be so easy to take what he’s offering her. But is she ready to risk her heart again, especially when her heart isn’t the only one in play?

Falling in love is easy. Staying in love is hard. Good thing Gabe is a fighter who’s determined to prove to Lia he’s in this for the long haul…the rest of their lives.

***SEQUEL TO THE AWARD-WINNING CHILDREN OF THE FIFTH SUN***

SHE THOUGHT THERE WAS NOTHING STRONGER THAN A MOTHER’S BOND.
SHE WAS WRONG.

Fifteen thousand years ago, the knowledge bringers—an amphibious, non-humanoid species known as the Huahuqui—came after a great global flood, gifting humans with math, science and civility. We killed them all.

Seventy years ago, we found one of their corpses preserved in ice and eventually created a clone, named K’in. Our governments squabbled over the creature and we killed that, too.

Now, a sinkhole in Siberia has opened revealing new secrets and humans may once again have a chance to prove we deserve the gifts the Huahuqui bestowed.

Freya Nilsson has spent the last five years trying to forget her role in the Huahuqui cloning program. Instead, she hid her son, KJ, from the regimes and agencies who she believed would exploit him for the powers he acquired through his father’s bond with K’in.

An innocent trip to help KJ understand his abilities results in the global conspiracy she fought to bury exploding back to life. Chased by new foes, and hounded to put the needs of the world first, all Freya can think of is protecting KJ—at all costs.

The Book Of M

by Peng Shepherd

36204070

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Fantasy / Science Fiction

  Teaser from page 74 in the hardcover.

Naz called, and her mother picked up crying. She and Rojan already knew from the news that the power had gone out in Boston overnight. “How much battery do you have left?” was all she said.

“Seven percent,” Naz answered.

Naz left the earpiece in for weeks, even though it was useless.

~~~~~
Synopsis
Set in a dangerous near future world, The Book of M tells the captivating story of a group of ordinary people caught in an extraordinary catastrophe who risk everything to save the ones they love. It is a sweeping debut that illuminates the power that memories have not only on the heart, but on the world itself.
One afternoon at an outdoor market in India, a man’s shadow disappears—an occurrence science cannot explain. He is only the first. The phenomenon spreads like a plague, and while those afflicted gain a strange new power, it comes at a horrible price: the loss of all their memories.
Ory and his wife Max have escaped the Forgetting so far by hiding in an abandoned hotel deep in the woods. Their new life feels almost normal, until one day Max’s shadow disappears too.
Knowing that the more she forgets, the more dangerous she will become to Ory, Max runs away. But Ory refuses to give up the time they have left together. Desperate to find Max before her memory disappears completely, he follows her trail across a perilous, unrecognizable world, braving the threat of roaming bandits, the call to a new war being waged on the ruins of the capital, and the rise of a sinister cult that worships the shadowless.
As they journey, each searches for answers: for Ory, about love, about survival, about hope; and for Max, about a new force growing in the south that may hold the cure.
Into The Mist
by Lee Murray
29562210
Genre:  Horror
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
My Review
A hot, steamy jungle. people with their own agenda’s, and something big and ravenous stalking them. Sure does sound fun. And it was.
 The author’s descriptions immediately put me in the jungle with the character’s.  All of them have to deal with the harsh environment. But, that’s not the only problem. Something huge, primordial stalks all of them, and it’s right at home in the jungle. Perfect camouflage until it strikes, leaving not much more than blood splatters to show someone was ever there.
I’m always looking for stories where the character’s have to struggle against the environment as much as the creature stalking them. And I liked the mythical aspect when the local legend comes into play. Made for a deeper, more thrilling reading experience for me.
This would be great to see on the big screen. I’d have to buy the DVD. It’s a keeper.
Synopsis
“Cinematic and evocative, Into the Mist is a tension-packed expedition into primordial terror.
Murray’s writing had me feeling the damp of the forest, seeing the mist curling through the fern fronds, and sensing the danger lurking there.
Ancient myths, military men and scientists placed in remote, primordial locations – it had all the right ingredients for me, and it didn’t disappoint for a moment.
Lee Murray is an author to watch.”
– Greig Beck, best-selling author of the Arcadian series
When NZDF Sergeant Taine McKenna and his squad are tasked with escorting a bunch of civilian contractors into Te Urewera National Park, it seems a strange job for the army.
Militant Tūhoe separatists are active in the area, and with its cloying mist and steep ravines, the forest is a treacherous place in winter.
Yet nothing has prepared Taine for the true danger that awaits them. Death incarnate.
They backtrack toward civilization, stalked by a prehistoric creature intent on picking them off one by one. With their weapons ineffective, the babysitting job has become a race for survival.
Desperate to bring his charges out alive, Taine draws on ancient tribal wisdom. Will it be enough to stop the nightmare? And when the mist clears, will anyone be left?
“Creepy and addictive, Into the Mist is an irresistible tapestry of military action, dark myths, and an ancient and terrifying horror. A must read for speculative fiction fans.”
Manifest Recall
by Alan Baxter
40186239
Genre:  Supernatural / Crime Thriller
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
My Review
I’m going to compare my reading experience to a horse race, as that’s how it felt to me. The horses are loaded  into the starting gate. The excitement and uncertainty build. Then the gates open and the story thunders down the track, galloping to an explosive, bloody ending.
Loading the gate: Eli comes back to awareness behind the wheel of a car, a girl in the seat beside him. At least she’s not in the trunk anymore.
In the gate: As Eli untangles his memories of horrific events he also has to deal with some dead men. Ghosts seem to be haunting him and they could be a hindrance or his downfall.
I like when the author presents a bad guy and I end up pulling for him. Eli is a hitman and has killed plenty of men. But I couldn’t help but hope he would win the day.
The gate opens: It’s a mad dash with some bloody, pulse pounding scenes that reminded me of the final showdown from the movie The Roadhouse with Patrick Swayze.
The finish line: A blue ribbon ending.
Did I enjoy this book. Oh, yeah! Would I recommend it? Very much!
