Without further adieu….

No Such Thing As Werewolves

Deathless: Book One

My Review

The title alone would make me want to read this book. Then there’s that frightful cover art.

Knew this was going to be good. But it was chock full of surprising twists. I thought I knew what was inside the pyramid. Nope. Kind of wrong there. And I thought this would be kind of predictable. Way wrong there.

Great characters. Too many to talk about individually. Good guys. Bad guys. Important secondary characters that do their part to flesh out the story. And those from the pyramid. Well, I can’t tell you much about them. But loved em. And something else, dark, evil. Can’t tell you anything about that or I’d spoil things.

I’m trying to categorize a genre but I can’t. Some science fiction and fantasy. Maybe a little mythology. Definitely suspense and mystery. And a healthy dose of horror.

A pyramid is discovered in Peru. It predates anything ever discovered on Earth. Teams rush to the scene, eager to to see what it hides inside.

Nothing could prepare them for what happens next.

Sound like something you’d like? I recommend you go grab a copy. It may take a short time to get to the action, but once it starts, you won’t be released until the end.

One thing. The ending. It’s a humdinger. Not what I was expecting, but, hey, I’m the reader, not the writer. I go where he takes me.

Synopsis

WARNING: May Contain Werewolves.

A pyramid predating all known cultures appears without warning. Its discovery throws into question everything we know about the origins of mankind.

Inside lies incredible technology, proof of a culture far more advanced than our own. Something dark lurks within, eager to resume a war as old as mankind. When it is unleashed it heralds the end of our species’ reign.

A plague of werewolves spreads across the world. A sunspot larger than anything in recorded history begins to grow. Yet both pale in comparison to the true threat, the evil the werewolves were created to fight.

I love baseball. When I was a little girl, I remember lying on the floor, right in front of the fan, (it was summer and we didn’t have AC in Michigan), and listening to the crack when the bat connected with a fast ball. Great memories.

I try not to stare, but from behind, I can’t help but admire how her tiny waist comes in over her hips. Her body’s supple, strong. There’s nothing delicate about her. The corner of my mouth turns up. She could probably kick my ass, and I don’t know why, but I like that.
She tosses me an annoyed glance over her shoulder. “Quit it.”
“What?”
“Haven’t you ogled my butt enough for one day?”
My cheeks burn again. So she did catch me checking her out on the field. Crap.
She lifts my arm and bends it at the elbow. It would have to be the arm, the one I couldn’t move after David Nichols hit me in the neck with the ball. At first, the docs didn’t know if I was partially paralyzed or not. Let’s just say it was a scary four and a half days before I finally detected any sign of feeling in it.
I gaze up at her. But does she know that?

About the Author
Collette West
Collette West grew up as somewhat of a jock-nerd hybrid. Entering the world three weeks premature, her dad nearly missed her birth because he had seats behind the dugout for a sold-out, highly-anticipated match-up between two of baseball’s biggest rivals. Not to be outdone, her book-loving mom taught her how to read by the time she was three. A love of the game coupled with an appreciation for the written word were instilled in Collette’s impressionable brain from a young age. No wonder her characters believe in the philosophy: sports + romance = a little slice of heaven.
Splitting her time between the Pocono Mountains and Manhattan, Collette indulges her inner fangirl by going to as many games as she can from hockey to baseball and downloading every sports romance novel in existence onto her iPad. When she’s not clicking away on her laptop, she enjoys walking her dog in Central Park, satisfying her caffeine craving at the Starbucks on Broadway and keeping an eye out for Mr. Right. But above all, she loves dishing with her readers. Email her at collette_west@yahoo.com.

From The Ashes Of Ruin Series

by Matthew D. Ryan

FromTheAshesOfRuin Drasmyr  FromTheAshesOfRuin children lubrocious  FromTheAshesOfRuin Sceptre

Genre: Fantasy

Synopsis

We vampires do not make easy prey. Our weaknesses are few, our strengths many. Fear is something we do not know, and death but a distant memory. So tread softly, pray to your god, and gird yourself with silver when the moons arise and night’s dark prince awakens. We fear not the wizard, nor the warrior, neither rogue, nor priest; our strength is timeless, drawn from darkness and we know no master save the hot lust of our unending hunger. We long for blood, your blood and no blade, nor spell, nor clever artifice, can keep us long from our prize. Feel our teeth at your throat, your life ebb from you, and know as darkness comes to claim you that the price of your folly is your everlasting soul.

~~~~~
Enjoy this excerpt from Drasmyr
There’s a woman in chain mail standing across the room from me; her sword is leveled at my chest. I can smell the enchantment on the blade, it’s a strong one; maybe even strong enough to cause me harm. Still, I’m not too concerned; it’s at least a ten foot lunge and I know I move faster than she does. Indeed, she’s the one who is looking worried. My display of strength and the death of her comrade have shaken her resolve.
She’s got a pretty face, flushed with excitement but strong and in control. It is her neck that really draws me, though, so soft and inviting, filled with the warm blood I desire. The curve of her flesh glistens, waiting for a well-placed gentle kiss.
She’s breathing rapidly now, her breath coming in shallow gasps. Her trek up through the castle has sapped much of her strength. And the fear she feels is naked in her eyes. Now, she’s
getting ready to pounce, just a little too much tension in her stance, her eyes just a little too focused. She couldn’t give me more warning if she were to ask my permission first.
She moves in with remarkable speed, her blade striking out like a serpent’s tongue. Even winded, she still manages to cut my cape, then prances away with her back toward the wall, ready for anything. Anything, except me.
Annette Larsen
Author Annette K. Larsen
I was born in Utah, but grew up in Flagstaff, Arizona and St. Louis, Missouri, the fifth of seven children. I attended Southern Virginia University and Brigham Young University, where I studied English and Theater. I now live in Idaho with my husband and four children.
I have Charlotte Brontë to thank for the courage to write novels. After being bombarded with assigned reading about women who justified abandoning either their families or their principles in the name of love, I had the great fortune of reading Jane Eyre. And that was it: finally, a heroine who understood that being moral and making the right choice was hard, and sometimes it hurt, but it was still worth it. After rereading it several years later, I realized that if I wanted more books to exist with the kinds of heroines I admired, then I might as well write a few myself. My books are about women who face hard choices, who face pain and rejection and often have to face the reality of sacrificing what they want for what is right. The consequences are often difficult or unpleasant, but in the end, doing what’s right will always be worth it.
I believe there is no substitute for good writing or good chocolate. Fortunately, one often leads to the other.
A Storm Of Secrets
The Storm Surge Trilogy #1
by Shona Perrett
a storm of secrets Jpeg front
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
My Review
Is it a coincidence that a weird storm forced several planes to crash land on the same island? That’s what the survivors begin to question.
And what if the island isn’t deserted? What if there’ a secret facility, guarded by armed troops?
And what of the storm. It’s not normal.  Especially when it affects your mind.
During a test, several young pilots are forced to land on a deserted island. Separated and unsure if the others survived, the teams set off to find each other.
Along the way, the separated teams encounter strangers. Some are obviously dangerous and some are questionable.
One team encounters a survivor from another crash. Not one of their group. Need to know information has them following him to find out what happened. Danger lies all around them. This stranger isn’t the only one that survived the crash. Dangerous people are roaming the island. Death lurks around every tangled path. And another storm is looming.
While I liked the young pilots. Enjoyed their dialogue, quirks, and the bit of romance that blooms, it was Rios, the stranger from the other crash, that really grabbed me.
As the groups find each other, you also meet Yale. She knows things. Things Rios and the young pilots will need to survive.
Yale also captured my interest. Her and Rios have a connection. Both are double tough, trained to kill and think on the run. I did get some background on them, but would love to know more. Crossing fingers there will be a sequel.
I did run into a few bumps in the road while reading this. A few places felt awkward and caused me to slow down. But as I got further into it, things smoothed out and I was carried away be the action and mystery.
The ending is a whirlwind. You finally get answers, and come up for air after the horrific storm that wreaks havoc.
The title is perfect for this mystery as there are many secrets to uncover. And the cover is thrilling and shows you some of the story inside.
I feel this would be a fun series and hope there are more books to follow. While it didn’t blow me away, it did keep me turning the pages, curious about what would happen and wanting those answers. I would give it three and a half stars, but I don’t do halves, and I always bump up, so I gave it four.
Synopsis
Special Agent Rios wakes up in an abandoned aeroplane. He finds himself on an unfamiliar island in the Bermuda Triangle, suffering from what appears to be amnesia. He must search for clues about his identity, as well as decipher the secrets of the island itself.
But will the truth be too terrifying to live with? Strangers hell-bent on murder, stranded young pilots, and signs of organized weapons trade. These things only touch the surface. What lurks in the skies above is far more sinister.
There is a strange energy high above the clouds, stewing deep within the Bermuda waters. And it grows restless. A storm is coming. A storm like no other, seeking to invade their minds. With the help of his newly acquainted team of special ops pilots, Rios must find a way to stop the storm before it destroys them…from the inside out.
Excerpt From Trembling hearts by Suzette Riddick
Restless, Tremaine tossed and turned for hours. Still shaken up over the harsh words hurled back and forth between the two most important men in her universe, sleep eluded her. The ringing doorbell accompanied by the loud knocking hadn’t disturbed her.
She nudged her snoring husband. “Bernard…Bernard…Bernard!”
Startled he jolted from his sleep. “What is it dear?” He sleepily answered as his lids began to close only to be snapped opened by the persistent banging.
“Someone’s at the door.”
The couple stuffed their feet into slippers, quickly grabbing their robes. She followed closely on her husband’s heels. Her fingers fumbled at tying the thin fabric belt around her waist. A sickening feeling formed in the pit of her stomach. Who in the world could be at their door at this hour? And why would they travel so far up the rural road leading to their home?
The sickening feeling dug deeper when Bernard opened the door to find Sheriff Dougherty on the other side. She instinctively reached for her husband’s hand. In the dark, the sorrowful look in the sheriff’s blue eyes was unmistakable.
“Bernard, Tremaine…there’s been an accident. It’s Jason. You folks need to get to the hospital right away.” The sheriff hesitated before adding, “He’s in bad shape.”
My teaser from page 39 in the paperback..
My motorboat really liked the choppy harbor water and was one of the smoothest rides around, thanks to it’s twin-hull structure. With Darcy at the helm, I leaned forward and switched on the radio to the classic rock station. Clearwater Revival’s Green River belted from the speakers. Shelby licked my face as I fed him ice cubes.
I really enjoyed Southern Heat, the first book in this series, and I’m so excited to be holding in my hands the shiny, perty ARC of Burning Heat! These characters are such a hoot and I”m going to have such fun seeing what they’ve been dragged into now!
As darkness blankets the holy city of Charleston, South Carolina, Brack Pelton,
an Afghanistan War veteran, steps out of a rundown bar after a long night.
Before he gets to his truck, he finds himself in the middle of a domestic
dispute between a man and a woman on the sidewalk. When a little girl joins the
couple and gets hit by the man, Brack intervenes and takes him down. But the
abuser isn’t finished. He pulls a gun and shoots the woman. Brack saves the
little girl, but his world has just been rocked. Again. The next day, while
sitting on a barstool in the Pirate’s Cove on the Isle of Palms, his own bar,
Brack scans the local paper. The news headline reads: Burned Body of
Unidentified Hispanic Man Found at Construction Site. Nothing about a dead woman
in the poor section of town. Brack feels a tap on his shoulder and turns around
to see an eight-yearold girl standing behind him. She’s the little girl he
rescued the night before, and she wants him to look into her sister’s shooting.
Violence and danger make up Brack’s not-too-distant past. Part of him craves
it—needs it. And that part has just been fed. Things are about to heat up again
in the lowcountry. May God have mercy on the souls who get in the way.
My Review
I read the first book in this series and loved it, so when I saw this boxed set for the first three books on Amazon, I had to grab it.
It’s kind of hard to review these separately as it would have to contain some spoilers, so I’m going to tell you about it like it’s one book.
It literally does start on a dark and stormy night. The blizzard has arrived, the power is staring to fail, and the residents of the town, those that haven’t left yet, are free game for the creatures. Doors don’t keep them out. Guns don’t seem to do more than slow them down for a bit. And the dark and snow work to their advantage.
I love a scary good creature story and the ones offered up by the author are so bad, so cunning and vicious, so hungry. And they are everywhere. They’ve been waiting for this.
Another thing I like is when the elements work for the monsters and against the humans. What could be worse than the snow storm of the century. These werewolves knew it was coming and planned accordingly. Some were already living there, and some came with the storm.
Imagine how horrible it would be. First, you witness something so horrific and unbelievable. Then you get past the fear and shock, and accept that the creatures exist. Now what?
Well, you round up anything you can use for weapons and enter the dark, cold night.You try to drive out of town, struggling through snow drifts and hoping you don’t slide off the road.  You see some people being attacked by the creatures. Do you stop to help? Probably not the best idea. Too many of them and you’ll probably just end up torn to pieces. You’re cut off from the outside world and your fear and doubt escalate. Is this happening everywhere?
So on you go. Seeking shelter and safety, and the things out there are following you. This is there time.
There was a lot of suspense and carnage to keep this horror fan happy. The suspense was edgy, and there were some good surprises. Even when I knew what was coming, it was fun reading how it happened.
This is a series I would only recommend you read in order. The books all start pretty much where the last one left off.
Books four and five are out now, so I’ll be grabbing them too.
Some chit chat.
I’ve been sitting here staring at my keyboard for at least five minutes waiting for inspiration on what to chat about. LOL I can say the usual. Worked a lot. Read a lot. Binged on Netflix. The weather has warmed up again.
Then it hit me. I drive a lot of the same routes day after day. I’ve become so accustomed to it, I almost don’t remember the drive.
But every now and then I catch a glimpse of the first time I drove through an area. How it looked for the first time.
That was my New years resolution. To stop and smell the roses. And I have and I am doing just that.
Sometimes I can even see my house as others might. Boy do I need to dust. LOL
How about you? Ever catch that elusive glimpse of new?
Got lots of books to share, so let’s get to it!
I’ll be hopping over to check out your Sunday posts so be sure to leave me your link!
