Lost and Broken Realm Banner 450 x 169

I’ve got a lot to show you today. There’s a peek inside The Lost and Broken Realm and a giveaway!

But first, a special guest post by Chris M. Arnone

The Lost and Broken Realm: Character Soundtrack

Let me start by saying that this was the most difficult and fun thing I did for the entire blog tour. Choosing one song for each of the main characters and several ancillary ones was a challenge, to say the least. Trying to relate one deep, complex piece of art to a deep, complex character is no easy task. There is no perfect song for each character, let alone one that tracks the progression a character takes. Nevertheless, after hours of listening, choosing, consulting with my wife (my alpha reader), and changing my mind, here’s the character soundtrack for The Lost and Broken Realm.

Gabriel: Where the Streets Have No Name by U2 This song is a bit nail-on-head, but it’s appropriate. Gabriel is lost in a world of broken and forgotten people, creatures, and locations. The song is about running, hiding, and it’s about heartbreak. This is Gabriel throughout most of the book.

Reece: Seven Devils by Florence + The Machine Reece is a young woman who’s been pushed and pulled around her entire life. She seems like this harmless little thing, but there’s a fire in her yearning to get out. She’s a woman who feels like she’s been used for her entire life. When that happens, the good guys and the bad guys start to look the same, all like devils.

Anansi: I’ll Follow You by Shinedown This song has a double meaning for Anansi. On the surface, it appears he’s following Gabriel and Reece throughout this journey and maybe leading some of the way. What it really points to is Anansi’s unerring loyalty to Luna, his partner, in particular. She’s the reason for everything he does, she’s what drives him. It’s not Gabriel or Reece that he would follow “to the eye of the storm,” but his one life-long love.

Zhiyan: Survivalism by Nine Inch Nails Zhiyan is a neo-Victorian. He’s a wasp and he plays both sides of the conflict in The Lost and Broken Realm toward one end: his own survival. He’ll wave the flag for the vile Emperor in one hand while aiding the resistance with the other. It’s hard to see if Zhiyan can value anyone’s priorities over his own.

Duke Wilhelm: Welcome to the Family by Avenged Sevenfold Duke Wilhelm is the slimiest, most vile person in The Lost and Broken Realm. Above all else, he craves power. This song is really indicative of the relationship between Wilhelm and Reece as he toys with and leverages her. Wilhelm always has something that people value, but he always has a steep price, too.

Flash: Glory by Hollywood Undead Flash is actually a bit character in The Lost and Broken Realm. He’s the top lieutenant for Wilhelm and only appears a couple of brief times, but his affect on the story is immediate in both instances. This song gives a bit more insight into his character and his motivations that I wasn’t able to put in the book.

The Emperor: Peacemaker by Green Day Don’t be fooled by the song’s name. The legendary punk band from California gave this song an ironic name, because the lyrics describe a person who wants anything but peace. Greed and gluttony drive the Emperor. He wants it all and he doesn’t want anyone else to have it. He will do anything to make that happen and maintain that status quo.

Amabilis: Fireflies by Owl City Amabilis is the last Fae queen. She is a creature of beauty, humility, joy, and light. That she can retain her composure and her brightness on the brink of her people’s extinction is a testament to her remarkable character.

Marigold: Don’t Worry ‘Bout Me by Billie Holiday Marigold has been like a mother to Reece for a long time. Why did the resistance give over such a precious charge to this apparently frail old woman? She’s self-sufficient and far stronger than she looks. In times of crisis, she doesn’t turn to her neighbors for help; they turn to her.

Bonus Track

Darkness: I Have Friends in Holy Spaces by Panic! at the Disco Okay, maybe one of these songs was really perfect for the character. Read the book. Listen to the song. Laugh with me. Saying much more would spoil the book.

Care to give it a listen? I’ve saved the playlist on Spotify for all to enjoy. The Lost and Broken Realm

Book Description:

Gabriel Drake had royally fouled up his life. Before his wife died, he was wealthy, respected, and loved. He pissed away the small fortune he and his wife built, drove away his friends, alienated his family, and even took a few precarious steps on the wrong side of the law. He lost his way. The world had forgotten the man he was, and then a head-on collision between his Jeep and a tree changed everything.  Death would have been easier. Instead, he’s woken up in a strange place where all the lost and forgotten things and people of our world go to rest. The laws of physics seem to be driven more by magic than logic. Cats fly and talk into his mind. He’s in a place where real power has been trampled under the foot of a maniacal emperor, and Gabriel alone has the power to free these forgotten people from the emperor’s iron grip. Which will Gabriel save: these lost and broken people, or his own shattered life?

Excerpt from Chapter 16:

The expansive cave was filled with statues. Gabriel was immediately reminded of the terracotta army in China, row after row of warriors guarding the tombs of ancient Chinese emperors, but these weren’t warriors. They weren’t distinctly Chinese, either. They were cyclopean; that was the first thing Gabriel noticed. Rather than two equally distanced eyes, each statue had one large eye right above the nose.

Unlike those Chinese statues, these weren’t uniform, either. Different bodies, faces, attire, genders, and ages of Cyclops made up the horde of stone figures. Dread began to creep back up Gabriel’s spine as he saw something they all had in common other than their lack of depth perception: every carved face was locked eternally in an expression of fear. Stout warriors crouched, hiding their faces. Women with horrified looks stood guarding their children. Gabriel wondered what foul mind could have sculpted such horrors over and over again.

“What is this?” Gabriel asked in a hush, frightened voice.

“I don’t know. I’ve never even heard of this place,” Anansi responded. For the first time since Gabriel had met the manticore, he heard and felt doubt and fear coming from the creature. Zhiyan kept staring at the ground, impassive, as Finkle Prime led him along.

“Who is here?” said a voice from the darkness. It sounded like a young woman, with a bright, luscious voice. Something was amiss with it, though Gabriel couldn’t figure out exactly what.

“Who is that?” Gabriel asked Anansi.

“I asked you first, mortal,” The voice said playfully. Gabriel realized what was wrong. The ‘s’ sounds were extended, like Cobra Commander in G.I. Joe, or like a snake using a human voice. Gabriel couldn’t figure out where it was coming from. It wasn’t in his head. He’d heard enough telepathy to know the difference, but this woman’s voice seemed to bounce and echo around the cave and off the statues that filled it.

“Gabriel. My name is Gabriel. Who are you?” He asked, trying to keep his voice steady.

“Gabriel. So kind of you to visit. No one comes to visit anymore. Zhiyan, he keeps them from me. Now here he is, marching to his death, how fitting,” She said happily.

“Prime, halt,” Gabriel said. The big clockwork man stopped and Gabriel saw Zhiyan with his head still bowed, but his eyes were closed tightly and a small smile crept over his face.

“Oh, shit,” Anansi said, suddenly angry. “Zhiyan, if we live through this, I hope the council draws and quarters your giant ass.”

“What is it?” Gabriel asked nervously.

“Ptolema. Eldest and most vicious of the Gorgon sisters,” Zhiyan finally said, still holding his eyes closed tightly and smiling wryly.

“Gorgons? Monsters like Medusa?” Gabriel asked, half in disbelief, half in growing panic. His mind raced. He tried to think of Medusa’s sisters, but the monster didn’t give him time to remember them.

“What do you know of my sister? She was no monster. She was a sweet, innocent girl. Raped and then villainized. No, she was no monster,” Ptolema said, her voice smooth as silk.

“Don’t look her in the eyes!” Anansi suddenly screamed telepathically. He almost didn’t say it in time.

“I am the monster,” She said, her voice dripping with venom. Out of the corner of his eye, Gabriel saw a woman come out of the shadows and into view. One moment later, and he would have looked at her squarely. Instead, he looked several feet to the side of her, taking in her form using his peripheral vision. She was tall as a man, a bit taller than Gabriel from what he could tell, and she wore a ragged red dress that came almost to the ground. Rather than legs, Gabriel saw a mass of writhing snakes skimming along the ground. She tried to dart directly into Gabriel’s view, faster than he expected, but he dropped his eyes fully to the ground. Her arms gleamed a brilliant, shining gold color, and reflected light from Prime’s shoulder lamps all around the cave. Gabriel wondered if her hair was made of venomous snakes like the stories told, but he didn’t chance looking up near her face.

“Why do you look away, Gabriel? Why do you not meet my gaze? Am I not beautiful?” Ptolema asked, almost pouting.

“No thanks. I’d rather not turn to stone today,” Gabriel said, his voice shaking. He remembered the stories of Medusa, how she turned men to stone with her gaze, and how Perseus destroyed her with a mirrored shield.

“There are worse ways to die,” Ptolema said, all the playfulness, seduction, and beauty suddenly gone from her voice. She was deadly serious. And then she was moving. She was fast, so much faster than Gabriel could have imagined. He leapt out of her way, but only just in time. He felt the wind move past him and smelled her, a waft of rotting flesh and dry snakeskin.

Gabriel scrabbled along the cave floor to get away from the horrifying woman. Tiny snake heads snapped at the air behind his heels. He looked all around for something, anything to fight with, to hide behind, anything.

“Oh, get up, little man. Die on your feet,” Ptolema balked, and then laughed at him, but only briefly. A massive shadow suddenly came over Gabriel, blocking out the light from Prime’s lamps. Fearful of looking up, he looked around and saw a massive paw, like one belonging to a lion that was three times larger than it should have been. A deafening roar filled his ears and Gabriel crawled out from under the creature, seemingly unnoticed. It was almost a giant lion, except it had two equally huge red feathered wings and the tail of a scorpion, its stinger poised to strike some thirty feet up in the air.

Title: Impulsion
Author: Jamie Magee
Genre: New Adult

BLURB

With a glance Wyatt Doran stole Harley Tatum’s heart. With each summer that passed, touch by touch, they robbed each other’s innocence, birthing a love that was so deep that it scorched within. Without warning, they were ripped from the clutches of each other, placed in lives that were worlds apart. Only to cross paths after a freak accident where Harley’s horse rig was flipped. An accident that Wyatt Doran, from fire station 32, responded.

The tension was immediate, the emotions were raw. One breath told them they were not the same as before, one touch…changed their world.
.
.
.
.
.

His fingertips slowly moved down her face, down her neck. He noticed how all the tension in her body drifted away, how her eyes slowly closed, the long, deep breaths that were causing her chest to rise and fall.“The sight of you brought it all back, past and present colliding with a magnitude that is so great…that I have no choice but to stop and realize that the only thing holding us back this go ‘round is us.”He reached his arm around her waist and pulled her body against his, causing her eyes to fly open, those breaths to come even faster. “And Harley, I’m going to fight like hell for you. And as soon as I make you mine again, I will die before I ever let anyone take you from me again.” His hand rose to her face, his thumb grazed her flesh, his eyes dipped to her lips, then met her gaze once more. “You’re the only woman I have ever loved. That I ever will love.”All at once, they both moved forward, their lips connecting as if they were molded from one source, a well-practiced dance of flesh, the perfect rhythm, teasing brushes of tongues that knew just when to fall into a deeper kiss, a kiss that was so devouring that all thought, all reason vanished. The impulse of the heart, that deep passion that lies dormant within erupted to a euphoria that made it impossible to fathom life outside of that very instant.

The fun non boring Bio 🙂
I’m an obsessive daydreamer. Lover of loud alternative music. Addicted to Red Bull. I love to laugh until it hurts. Fall is my favorite season. Black is my favorite ‘shade.’ Strong believer in the saying: there is a reason for everything, therefore I search for ‘marked moments’ every moment of everyday…and I find them. Life is beautiful!
Boring one….
Jamie Magee has always believed that each of us have a defining gift that sets us apart from the rest of the world, she has always envied those who have known from their first breath what their gift was. Not knowing hers, she began a career in the fast paced world of business. Raising a young family, and competing to rise higher in that field would drive some to the point of insanity, but she always found a moment of escape in a passing daydream. Her imagination would take her to places she’d never been, introduce her to people she’s never known. Insight, her debuting novel, is a result of that powerful imagination. Today, she is grateful that not knowing what defined her, led her on a path of discovery that would always be a part of her.

“Forget everything you know about grim reapers, Ophelia. Humans have it wrong. It’s easier to believe in angels and demons, than to see what’s right in front of you. Who wants to believe the undead walk among us with beating hearts? It would frighten humans. It would probably send many to their graves faster,” Edon said.

There are no sustainable food crops and the big wigs control everything. All you have to do is give yourself, all of yourself, over to the oppressors and all of your needs will be provided.

With food shortages and power hungry officials running the show, you can bet there will be a rebellion. And a young waitress, Eadie, is prophesied to lead it. She’ll be going up against a huge corporation with lethal Federal Angels they use to keep people in line. She’s only nineteen and has no clue what’s coming for her. Especially after she has to kill in self-defense and now she’s a wanted fugitive.

This was a wild read. I can’t even think about how to tell you about it. I’m going to try though.

The story is related to you from multiple points of view. I never felt one character was more central than another, which was good as many died.

The dystopian world the author built is in the future, and it could almost be real. Don’t we all fear big brother and their spies? Imagine giving over your brain, your thoughts, to your employer. Who knows what the implants are putting into your head, and what they are taking out of it.

But if you choose to live in the Zone as an ordinary citizen, you can barely get by. Caught between a rock and a hard place for sure.

Once I became familiar with the characters the pace picked up and I became immersed in the story. It’s not pretty. In fact, it’s brutal and hard to swallow at times. I still can’t get my head around a corporation as God and worshipping them as such. That’s just insane.

I’m not sure these really apply, but the movies Soylent Green and The Matrix came to mind as I read this book.

There are a few things I’d love to mention but I don’t do spoilers. What I can tell you is lots of people die in the frenzied ending. No happily ever after here, but an excellent finale, until the next book.

EXCERPT

The mist was clearing. Brian found himself standing in the street outside the bar he had entered earlier. Half a dozen battered and bleeding men stood surrounding him, and at least as many more lay on the gravel, seriously wounded or out cold.

The attack had come from somewhere in the mist, from all directions at once. His head and torso ached and throbbed. He locked his shaking knees to keep them from buckling. Every muscle in his body seemed to be lengthening, pouring downward like water. His eyelids drooped.

One of the standing men took a step toward him, fists raised. Brian tried to turn away from him, his arm flopping behind his back like a fish.

Behind his back! His eyes opened a little wider. He straightened and forced his arm to function, whipping out his revolver and aiming it around at the circle of attackers.

He tried to pull back the hammer but too many of his knuckles were broken. He ended up simply pointing it at the closest one, who backed away cautiously. Once past him, Brian walked backwards, still aiming the gun as long as he could see them. Then he turned, moving as fast as he could manage, back toward Dok’s place.

My Review

I had a lot of fun learning about Hawaiian magic and menehunes. Never heard of them before.

What should have been a wonderful honeymoon in Hawaii for Donovan and Riga, one long overdue, turns into a murder mystery when they come upon a murdered seal and a murdered man lying side by side on the beach.

Riga notices the magic symbols etched in the sand and jumps into the case. Who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too?

Riga and Donovan are the perfect couple. They both have magical capabilities and both like a good mystery. They compliment each other at work and in love. I loved following their romance from first meeting all the way through their honeymoon.

The author really did her research, bringing Hawaiian myths to the story and describing the lush scenery in vivid color.

Once the story gets rolling, the danger rushes in and the suspects emerge. I really wasn’t sure who was behind the murders and whether it was caused by human hands or magical. Finding out what was behind it was an even bigger mystery.

It’s been such fun following this series, seeing how the characters grow with each lesson life served up. I hope there will be more. It’s hard to let go of characters I’ve grown to love.

Some quotes I enjoyed.

“This is a terrible place for an investigation,” she said, exasperated. “It’s too beautiful. It’s making us lazy.”

Energy flowed through her, cool and dark, hot and light, there yet not there. She let it fill and empty her, and focused on what she needed: like calling to like. Necromancy to necromancy. Blood to blood.

Synopsis

Mermaids, menehunes, and murder.

Riga Hayworth just wants to relax with her new husband on their Hawaiian honeymoon. But a body on a Kauai beach pulls them into a murder investigation, sending the supernatural world into an uproar.

When Riga detects traces of magic at a murder scene, she knows she can’t ignore the call. There’s necromancy afoot, and she must prepare for the battle to come. But can Riga fight the forces of nature? Or will they destroy her and everyone she loves?

Book five in the Riga Hayworth series of paranormal mystery novels, The Elemental Detective is a fun, fast-paced urban fantasy blending romance with the supernatural, and exploring the magic of Hawaii.
