I moved near him and his hand guided me in front of the bench, but I turned to face him instead of sitting down. He immediately shifted back, pulling slightly away. I wasn’t sure if it was the bump on my head suddenly clouding my thoughts, or the romance of being swept away and rescued by a gorgeous, mysterious boy, or this little ache in my heart of forgotten memories and dreams, but something deep inside me drew me towards him.

I wanted to reach out and hold him, but I held the feelings back, unsure if I should act on them. Instead, I stood there unmoving, still gazing up at him. He was tall compared to most high school boys I knew. I searched his face for any sign of reciprocation and moved closer. This time he didn’t move away.

“Thank you again,” I said softly, looking up at him through my lashes.

There was a long, heavy pause as I waited breathlessly for his response. His glowing eyes met mine, and their radiance hypnotized me. I could see nothing else.

Then I felt it again, the unexplainable connection between us. Time slowed around us like a force field pulling us together. I had no desire to resist it; I let the feelings draw me in, and I inched forward, wishing for his lips on mine. His hand lifted gently to my waist, sending a thrill through me in every direction. Never before had I felt the desire to kiss someone so fervently, the divine first kiss I had always dreamed of.

There was no trace of resistance left on his face. He leaned into me and my heart raced. Our faces grew slowly together as I looked from his dazzling eyes to his inviting lips.

Something Wicked by Angela Campbell (The Psychic Detectives Series #2)

Can be read as a stand-alone

Published by: Harper Impulse /  Publication date: October 31st 2013

Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romantic Suspense

Synopsis

Psychic medium Alexandra King is sick of being pestered by her boss’s dead mother demanding help to reunite her two estranged sons. Determined to get some peace and quiet again, Alexandra follows a lead in finding the younger Collins brother to Charleston, South Carolina, where she immediately meets the hottest man she’s ever laid eyes on and finds herself a willing participant in seduction. Of course, her one-night-stand turns out to be none other than Dylan Collins — her boss’s younger brother and a homicide detective who believes psychics are a complete waste of time.
All Dylan wants is a few hours of pleasure to take his mind off of the case haunting him. A serial killer is stalking the streets of The Holy City — a killer who calls himself The Grim Reaper. When the woman he’d just spent the night with turns up and offers her services as a psychic consultant on the case, his ardor quickly cools. Last thing he needs is to get tangled up with a con artist.
It doesn’t take long for Dylan to realize Alexandra is the real deal – and the killer’s next target. Dylan’s protective instincts battle his reluctance to get too involved with a woman he isn’t sure he can trust. As they get closer to finding the killer, they also grow closer to one another, but will Alexandra’s secret agenda destroy their chance at happiness — if the killer doesn’t strike first?

“It must be your lucky night, hon.” A woman’s voice drew her attention.

Alexandra blinked up at her waitress as the young woman slid a mug of beer in front of her. Did the girl seriously just call her hon?

The redhead nodded over her shoulder. “The hunk at the pool tables bought you a drink.” She winked. “Enjoy.”

Oh, no. Not only were the dead people around here clamoring for her attention, so was some a-hole on the prowl. She bit back a groan and lifted her gaze to give the man a polite shake of her head, a silent thanks but no thanks and –

Hello, Mr. Delicious.

He was hands down the most criminally sexy man she’d ever laid eyes on, and for a woman who worked with some serious man candy these days, that was saying a lot. He studied her from the billiards area as he chalked up one of the cues. He was the only person over there, playing a solitary game while most people congregated at the bar. A slight smile teased his mouth as she managed to lift the mug and nod. So what if she hated beer? She’d gulp the whole thing in one go if that sex god wanted to watch. He nodded back, gestured to the pool table beside him, and—

Oh, yeah. She was tempted to saunter over there and see what happened. Beyond tempted. She’d never had a one-night stand in her life, but maybe this was as good a time as any.

“Well, I’ll be! He sure seems to have struck yer fancy.”

Oh, no. She scrunched her brows and shook her head. She had a bad feeling about this.

The ghost wooted. “Oh, but I think he has.” He glanced toward the billiards. “And I dare say he has taken quite a fancy to you, miss. Comes in here a lot, that one does. Never been able to spook ‘em though.” Derby Hat Guy abruptly stood and started walking toward the other man, saying, “Let’s give ‘em a game. Have a bit of fun with the rascal.” He rubbed his hands together.

“Wait! Uh,” Alexandra jumped to her feet and realized a few seconds later she was practically on top of the pool table when Mr. Delicious said, amused, “Whoa now. I’m guessing you like a good game of pool?”

Among other things.

She bit her lip and tried to ignore the ghost bent over the other end of the table, reaching for two of the balls that had been scattered near a corner pocket. She’d made this poor, delicious man a target of the ghost’s tomfoolery. Oh dear. She needed to fix this.

“Pool?” Her eyes widened when Derby Hat Guy picked up the white ball behind Mr. Delicious and moved it clearway across the table. There was no orange glow to it, which meant the ball had actually moved. Had anyone else seen that? This ghost was an old and smart one. Not many could move objects like that. “Yeah. Yeah, I love pool. Game on.” Leaning over, she slapped the green felt and flicked her fingers a few times toward the wall, trying to convey the message to Derby Hat Guy to get lost.

Mr. Delicious held out a cue stick to her in offering, distracting her from the ghost past his shoulder. “Great. We’ll start a new game. I was getting tired of losing to myself.” He looked her up and down where she still leaned against the table and seemed to like what he saw. His smoldering blue eyes burned with heat so intense, she felt her insides ignite. He wriggled the cue in his hand. “You know how to use this thing?” His smile was kicked up to full charge on the suggestive meter.

Oh, my, he was flirting, and that was a game best played by two. Accepting the wooden pole from him, Alexandra arched a brow and slowly ran a finger along its length. “I can handle a stick pretty good.” She pursed her lips, blew at the chalk on the end, and slowly batted her lashes when she looked at him again. “Besides, what woman doesn’t love to bust some balls every now and then?”

He gave an appreciative chuckle. “All right.” He began setting up a new game and she sighed, watching his taut backside move deliciously against his faded jeans as he bent over. Damn. Levis should pay him a royalty. Who looked that good in jeans, besides Calvin Klein models? No one, except this guy. Maybe he was a Calvin Klein model. He definitely had the face and body for it.

And maybe she should offer to buy him a drink or something—you know, to apologize for making him a target of the resident ghost.

“Can I get you a beer?”

“Nah. I’m good.” His back muscles stretched against his black t-shirt when he rested his elbows on the table, highlighting some serious muscle definition beneath.

“Something else? Whiskey?” She tilted her head at him. Me?

“No thanks.” His eyes twinkled with amusement as he straightened and moved closer. “Girls take advantage of me when I drink. I can see I’ll need to keep my wits around you.”

Lucky Sevens

by Cynthia Vespia

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Luca “Lucky” Lucazi is a man who lives for the job, until the job starts to threaten his life. A former Navy Seal, Lucky is ideal as the head of security for Lucky Sevens Casino. But when major names at the casino start falling victim to deadly and suspicious “accidents” Lucky must fight his way through a cast of eccentric characters only Las Vegas could spawn, and his own battle with alcoholism, before his lover Brooklyn – the sweethearted stripper – becomes the next victim. But when Lucky faces off with illusionist Christopher King, endowed with real magic powers, will his luck finally run out?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Excerpt

Predict, prevent and protect. The same words he’d learned as a Navy SEAL bled over into his job as head of security very well. But as Luca “Lucky” Luchazi stared down at the body of his friend and former mentor Charles Vega he didn’t feel as though he’d honored those words at all.

More than a dozen police vehicles converged on the scene. The black and whites of Las Vegas Metro were scattered everywhere. Their flashing light bars washed everything in red drowning out the mix of neon colors that came from the casinos neighboring Lucky Sevens.

Charles had come to Vegas in its infancy and built his empire from scratch. Even while the others came crashing down to make way for the new mega resorts with their elaborate designs and theme park style attractions, Lucky Sevens remained standing as one of the last legendary casinos on The Strip.

Lucky had always admired the old man for remaining true to his ideals even when the casino was taking a pounding in the pocket book. Now he was nothing more than a sack of meat splattered all over the sidewalk.

Personnel from the county coroner’s office had also responded to the scene, but not soon enough. The vision of good old Charlie lying with his robe open exposing his wobbly bits to the world, and lying in a pool of his own blood, would haunt Lucky for the rest of his days. Even now as they draped him in plastic and wrapped him up tight for his last ride all Lucky could see was the blood. He’d witnessed his fair share of death during war but this time it was different. This was Charlie. He’d been like a second father to Lucky ever since he set foot in sin city. So when he overheard two Metro officers disrespecting Charles’ death with their blown out theories Lucky set them straight.

“Hey ease up,” Lucky said walking in between the two officers. “I never thought you were the type to spread gossip, Mel.”

Lucky had known Mel Harrison for many years. They’d done favors for each other multiple times. Harrison was the only guy on Metro that Lucky held any respect for. He’d always assumed the feeling had been mutual.

“Sorry Lucky, I know how much Charlie meant to you.” Harrison motioned to his partner. “Get the coroner over here to finish up.”

Harrison put a reassuring hand on Lucky’s shoulder and the two officers went on about their business. Lucky let them walk. He let them scrape Charles Vega off the sidewalk like road kill. He just stood there as a blast of hot wind rolled in off the desert and struck him like a blow dryer on high speed.

Damn weather had turned on a dime. What were they calling it? El Nino? Something Spanish – go figure. Name somewhat brought to mind hot sand beaches and girls in Brazilian cut thongs.

There would be questions about Charlie’s death, inquiries, maybe accusations but then they’d put everything to bed wrapped in a nice little bow. To the police, the papers, and the tourists (who even now posed for pictures in front of a real life Las Vegas crime scene) it would all be dusted off as just another gambling related suicide.

For Lucky the question would gnaw at his insides for eternity.

How could he have let this happen?

Building Fictional Towns: A Look At Nolan From “Come Little Children”

By D. Melhoff | November 20, 2013

I’m always interested in taking readers to places they’ve never been before, particularly terrifying ones. The backdrop for Come Little Children is the majestic Yukon landscape, and for those of you familiar with Robert Frost’s poetry, you’ll know that it’s an incredibly beautiful territory, as well as a home for the weird and supernatural.

But why did I choose the Yukon for this particular story? And how could I teleport readers to such a remote place without having been there myself?

For me, those questions encompass the most exciting part about being a writer: exploring different worlds, deciding on settings, and, ultimately, getting to build them.

When it comes to deciding on a story’s location, inspiration can pop up from anywhere. For this particular book, I remember going through a Robert Frost phase and returning to one of his most famous lines (“There are strange things done in the midnight sun”) again and again. It didn’t spur the story of Come Little Children directly, but it helped spark an interesting motif and tie some of the paranormal elements together. I also like making connections with familiar lore, and the idea that “strange things” (plural) have happened under the Yukon moon hints that ol’ Sam from Tennessee hasn’t been the only subject of something bizarre up north. Combined with the fact that I come from somewhere extremely cold—and that I’m no stranger to having my face frozen off in the winter—I felt prepared to tackle the landscape, even though I’ve never been there in person.

So that’s why I went with the Yukon. Next was to decide whether or not to use a real town.

Ultimately, I created Nolan for three reasons:

  1. Logistics. I needed a place where I had control over the town’s history and its physical layout
  2. Tone. The deeper and darker into the woods, the better, so that’s where Nolan was born.
  3. Suspension of Disbelief. By setting the book somewhere unfamiliar, readers don’t arrive with a lot of preconceived notions. And similar to point #2, the more uncharted the location, the better, especially since there was always going to be a supernatural element involved. In other words, it’s easier to believe that dark voodoo exists in the secluded northern wilderness than it does in downtown San Francisco.

After I chose to go with a fictional town, that’s when the world-building really began.

For the sake of this blog post, I’ll boil my process down to another three points.

  1. Researching. Since I’m not a mortician, most of the designs (especially for the funeral home) were inspired by online articles and videos.
  1. Sketching. Not all of my settings are fully fleshed out, but I’ll usually draw up blueprints of the more critical ones. For this story, that meant creating a detailed map of the entire village, as well as a set of blueprints for the Vincents’ morgue—all the way down to the bathrooms and broom closets. Are the closets ever mentioned? No. But does it help me picture every inch of the building? Absolutely, and that’s something a lot of authors are careful about [I can’t say for sure, but I’d be willing to bet my left bludger that J. K. Rowling still has full sketches of Hogwarts filed away somewhere.]
  1. Editing. “Come Little Children” took two years to complete, and I feel many of the smaller details only surfaced after going over it again and again. A word of caution for fellow writers: your readers are continuity Nazis. If you tell people how a town is laid out—or how characters behave—and then suddenly you change something for convenience-sake, those readers will blitzkrieg der sheisse out of your Goodreads reviews. Having an editor will help catch glaring inaccuracies, but you still need to put in the time and effort to know your world better than anyone else.

That’s all for now, folks. Best of luck in your own world-building endeavors.

P.S. If you’re still wondering what kind of strange things happen in the midnight sun, I invite you to spend some time with me in Nolan and find out.

The Penton Legacy, Book 2

By Susannah Sandlin

Release date: October 9, 2012

Publisher: Montlake Romance

Book Description:

With the vampire world on the brink of civil war over the scarcity of untainted human blood, battle lines are being drawn between the once peaceful vampire and human enclave of Penton, Alabama, and the powerful Vampire Tribunal.

A Scottish gallowglass warrior turned vampire in the early 17th century, Mirren Kincaid once served the Tribunal as its most creative and ruthless executioner—a time when he was known as the Slayer. But when assigned a killing he found questionable, Mirren abandoned the Tribunal’s political machinations and disappeared—only to resurface two centuries later as the protector and second-in-command of Penton. Now the Tribunal wants him back on their side—or dead.

To break their rogue agent, they capture Glory Cummings, the descendant of a shaman, and send her to restore Mirren’s bloodthirsty nature. But instead of a monster, Glory sees a man burdened by the weight of his past. Could her magic touch—meant by the tribunal to bring out a violent killer—actually help Mirren break his bonds and discover the love he doesn’t believe he deserves?

It’s a town under siege, a powerful warrior in a battle with his past, and one woman who can make the earth move—literally—as the Penton Legacy continues.

REDEMPTION

Book One Penton Legacy series

By Susannah Sandlin

Following a worldwide pandemic whose vaccine left human blood deadly to vampires, the vampire community is on the verge of starvation and panic. Some have fanned into rural areas, where the vaccine was less prevalent, and are taking unsuspecting humans as blood slaves. Others are simply starving, which for a vampire is worse than death—a raging hunger in a creature too weak to feed.

Immune to these struggles—at first—is Penton, a tiny community in rural Chambers County, Alabama, an abandoned cotton mill town that has been repopulated by charismatic vampire Aidan Murphy, his scathe of 50 vampires, and their willingly bonded humans. Aidan has recruited his people carefully, believing in a peaceful community where the humans are respected and the vampires retain a bit of their humanity.
But an unresolved family feud and the paranoia of the Vampire Tribunal descend on Penton in the form of Aidan’s brother, Owen Murphy. Owen has been issued a death warrant that can only be commuted if he destroys Penton—and Aidan, against whom he’s held a grudge since both were turned vampire in 17th-century Ireland.  Owen begins a systematic attack on the town, first killing its doctor, then attacking one of Aidan’s own human familiars
To protect his people, Aidan is forced to go against his principles and kidnap an unvaccinated human doctor—and finds himself falling in love for the first time since the death of his wife in Ireland centuries ago.

Dr. Krystal Harris, forced into a world she never knew existed, must face up to her own abusive past to learn if the feelings she’s developing for her kidnapper are real—or just a warped, supernatural kind of Stockholm Syndrome in which she’s allowing herself to become a victim yet again.

Susannah Sandlin’s REDEMPTION is the first in the Penton Legacy series. Book two, ABSOLUTION, will be out September 18, and book three, OMEGA, on December 18.

Penton, Alabama: Ghost Towns and Vampires

 Susannah Sandlin

In the Penton Legacy series, the vampire scathe of “pacifist warrior” Aidan Murphy, a 400-year-old Irish master vampire, lives in an old Alabama cotton mill town called Penton.

Once the cotton mill shut down, the community became a ghost town until a few years ago when Aidan, looking for a place to settle his vampire family and their willingly bonded human familiars, discovered it. He bought up all the property, moved in his big vampire family, and they settled down to live happily ever after and escape the civil unrest and starvation caused when a human pandemic vaccine changed human blood chemistry enough to make it deadly to a vampire who fed on it.

Of course things don’t turn out to be flowers and unicorns. A war comes to Penton, and it becomes the spoke around which the whole discord within the vampire world turns. (And there are lots of sexy vampires and hot romances along the way!)

When I came up with the idea for this paranormal romance series, I needed a location for my vampire town (which was, in early drafts, called Stockholm because the first book, Redemption, dealt with Stockholm Syndrome). I wanted a town in Alabama so it wouldn’t tread too close to my urban fantasy series that’s set in New Orleans, and I’d moved to Alabama about a year before starting the series.

I didn’t have to look far. When I got a population map of the state and began looking for big, empty swaths of land that had very few people in it, I had only to look one county north of mine: Chambers County. So I hopped in the car for a Sunday afternoon drive, and fell in love.

chambers county

The real Penton, Alabama, is an unincorporated community of about 200 people whose primary claim to fame is a stock car racetrack, the Penton Raceways, and a couple of churches. It’s not really a town at all.

A few miles south of it lies the Chambers County seat, LaFayette, which is a town of about 3,000 people very hard hit by the decline of the U.S. textile industry. It sits near the Georgia line, and the whole area was built around West Point Pepperell, a textile manufacturer that has moved most of its operations outside the U.S. and decimated the economy of this area.

lafayette-downtown

LaFayette’s a beautiful little town, with a charming main street that I’d guess is at least 50 percent empty now. The surrounding countryside of rolling hills and pine forest is beautiful. The mayor is a 19-year-old student at the university where I work (how cool is that!?). It reminds me a LOT of the small town of about the same size in which I grew up, as did my parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents.

Neither LaFayette nor Penton are cotton mill towns, but I my hometown of Winfield was, up in northwest Alabama, so I know about those big hulking mills and the “mill villages”—small row houses owned by the mill and rented out to millworkers.

mill village

So, in the Penton Legacy books, I used as my setting the real location and name of Penton—out in the wilds of Chambers County—but for the town itself, I used a mashup of LaFayette and my own hometown with its mill and mill village.

old factory ruins

And really, when you think about it, an old abandoned mill town, a rural Southern setting only two hours outside Atlanta…what better place to set a vampire war?

Have you read other books in a rural Southern setting? Have you ever lived in or visited a small Southern town? Leave a comment for a choice of signed book from the Penton Legacy series!

Before I knew what Contemporary Women’s Fiction was (a teenager), I wouldn’t give a book like Running Against Traffic a second glance.

Now that I’ve read many of this genre, I can’t resist them.

Like Lifetime Movie Network, the scenarios are the “It could happen to you” kind.

That’s why I get into them so much. I can picture it happening to me and really connect with the characters and feel what they feel.

Running Against Traffic has me wondering how I would do if I stepped into Paige’s shoes.

Check out my character interview with Paige, get to know more about her, and remember to enter Gaelen VanDenbergh’s awesome giveaway.

You could win a Kindle Paperwhite!

My Character interview with Paige Scott….

.

I’ve heard that running can be great therapy. I was wondering if you listen to music while you’re running and if so, what do you listen to?

I don’t listen to music while running. I might start to, but when I first started running, I was so jogging photo: ANGIE jogging.jpgfocused on the physical aspect of it, how my body was handling this new exertion…Then when I got more used to that, I noticed I was waking up, in every way. I started to enjoy the mental calm and pay attention to the world around me and how different I was feeling about living. Music just wasn’t needed.

I’m sure you’ve heard the saying, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.”  Would you say that’s true for you?

Coming from a place where it could have killed me, I would say yes. A very emphatic yes! I think if you find yourself alone, and you’ve just been sinking lower and lower your whole life, fading away into anonymity and a mental state of just not caring, a dramatic act like what happened to me – David literally throwing me away when I was inches from rock bottom anyway – that act can either finish you off or force you to make the decision to change your life. Even if it takes a while, and some serious fumbling and bumbling, that decision that you make is the first step to coming back to life in a new, much stronger state. I still don’t feel like a strong person, but I’m here, and my life feels real to me, now. I’ll never go back to where I was when I first arrived in WellsLake.

After such a traumatic lifestyle change, what strength emerged that surprised you?

I spent my life so self absorbed, so focused on myself. I learned early in life that I’m all I have, and I need to look out for my interests and well being only. Healthy? No. Self-preserving. When Bryce needed me, I had no idea how to care for someone in such a dire state, but the strength emerged to do so, and it wasn’t a choice. That shocked the hell out of me.

I watched a movie where a woman was left standing at the altar. She asked her friends this question, “When will I laugh again?” One friend replied, “When something is really, really funny.” Can you recall the first thing that made you laugh again?

Yes, I can tell you exactly when that first genuine, warm, belly laugh happened, after so many years. On Thanksgiving, my first holiday in WellsLake, Al and I…We had a surprising encounter that led to an argument. We met up later and worked it out, and he made a comment about his brother’s wardrobe, when I thought he was thinking about us, the way I was thinking about us. I started to giggle. Then I started to laugh. Al being Al made me laugh. And sometimes that’s what’s needed the most.

EXCERPT: First 2 Pages

FBI Field Office, Atlanta, Georgia

I’ve studied Chelsea since the FBI teamed us up when I was twelve. She has a move…classic Chelsea. She turns the doorknob and her body stiffens, a metal rod shoved down her spine. As she sets a high heel inside the interrogation room, her southern accent and soft manners are buried beneath a terrifyingly sleek, blond exterior in a perfectly pressed pinstriped suit.

Four years of practice, two custom-cut suits of my own, and I still look epileptic when I try to project that sense of total control. Of I’ve got this. Even though I don’t have her drawl and my posture’s not bad.

I follow Chelsea, stiff as can be, into the room with the bright white walls. Our sicko suspect glances up from the steel table in its center. I flinch at his chilling stare. Flinching already, see. A slow smile bulges his cheeks as he studies me. Attention from a guy in an orange jumpsuit sitting at a steel table—to which he is handcuffed—is what Chelsea would officially term an undesirable outcome. More undesirable—me showing I care. Like she always says, “Don’t let ’em see you sweat, hon.”

No way am I giving this psycho the satisfaction. I suppress a shiver as the air conditioning kicks on with a groan. Tiny goosebumps break out on my forearms, raising the fine hairs to attention. Can’t rub myself warm—that’s a tell. Instead, when Chelsea slides into one of the fold-out metal chairs across from him, I follow her lead and take comfort in her giraffe-like posture in the chair next to mine.

Chelsea tosses a manila folder so that its contents spill across the table. The file details his alleged heinous crimes, the FBI’s efforts to track him, and the blood evidence in his garage that matches that of the latest missing girl—Georgia State art major, vegetarian, and more important to the suits, daughter of a local bigwig. Funny, the things you remember from a file when they have nothing to do with the case, like how she specialized in collages. They’d found cut-up pieces of magazines littered across the desk and floor of her dorm room. The pieces trailed into the hall like flower petals down a church aisle.

The strewn high-gloss photos of his suspected victims—his own personal collage of the young, female, and carved—don’t solicit a cringe from him when I can barely hold down my water and I’ve been staring at them for weeks. My gaze flickers to the one-way mirror—a silent promise: We’re gonna nail this freak.

“I’m FBI Agent Chelsea Tanner. This is my partner. How are you this evening?”

This is normally when a suspect will ask, with understandable outrage, why I’m party to the interrogation because aren’t I, at almost sixteen, too young to be in the FBI? Pinstriped suit or not, I look my age, maybe even a year or two younger because I’ve always been small—childhood malnutrition will do that to a girl.

It’s the suspects who don’t care that I’m in the room who worry me. Like this guy, whose pale eyes flicker to my throat.

I fight the urge to shift, even to clench my fingers tight into a fist. I don’t blink.

“Fine weather we’re having this winter.” Chelsea manages not to smirk at our sitting in a windowless room. Her face is unbreakable. “These are perfect skies for a getaway. Do you have plans for the weekend?”

When he doesn’t answer, she shares our itinerary—a leisurely drive to Savannah to visit her mother at their family wintering home. Yes, that’s a thing. The trip always involves mint juleps and wide-brimmed hats, not that Chelsea shares the finer details. A genteel background rarely earns cred with criminals.

She chit-chats as if he’s not imagining the slice of his boning knife into my neck. The careful incision he would carve against the clavicle, removing the flat bone from the ligaments attached to the shoulder. I don’t need my unique magic to know what’s on his mind. Some things in the case file stick for a reason.

My bone structure fascinates him. His gaze caresses my cheekbones, roams over the bridge of my nose, dips into the hollow of my neck, and brushes the stray dark corkscrew curls that drape over my sternum.

Don’t move. Don’t blink. Don’t even breathe.

“Savannah’s so beautiful this time of year. Any time of year. I go as often as I can. Don’t you think you should make time for family?” The word rolls off her tongue in three syllables, a rare ray of southern shining through her otherwise stiff facade.

Fah. Mil. Lee.

He closes his eyes as though in prayer. When he opens them, his pupils dilate to nearly black and he rubs his thumbs over his knuckles. He does not take the bait.

Come on, Chelsea. You work your magic and I’ll work mine.

That’s our deal. She gets them talking. I make them spill their guts.

Cecilia has been praised for “instilling a warmth and weight into her characters” (Romancing The Book Reviews) and her books have been praised for being “well-written, original, realistic and witty” (Quills & Zebras Reviews).
Her latest series of young-adult contemporary Jane Austen retellings was named a What’s Hot pick (RT Book Reviews magazine) and is a Best of 2012 pick (Kirkus Reviews) where it was praised for being a “unique twist on a classic” and offering “a compelling mix of action, drama and love.”
