Black Door

goodreads-badge-add-plus

William and his brothers are on their way to summer camp. But when a wrong turn leads them to an abandoned campground, things start to get weird in this nail-biting tale of adventure and suspense.

This book brought back lots of memories.

When I was little, my parents took us on camping trips every summer. It could be hectic and I imagine my parents wondered why they did it, as the proverbial, “Are we there yet?” must have been yelled so many times from the back seat of our station wagon.

We took everything we would need with us, plus there were six of us kids.

We sometimes went to pretty remote areas and it felt exciting and eerie, like being the only people on the planet.

When I read Black Door, that feeling returned.

Imagine three boys in the car impatient to get to camp. arguing back and forth and teasing each other endlessly.

The poor father just wants to get there quickly and end this nightmare ride.

As they get close to their destination, even some of the boys feel something is wrong and when they arrive at the deserted camp, their fears are confirmed.

When they realize this can’t be the right place, it’s too late to turn back. They are low on gas. So they enter the abandoned looking office and all that’s there is the black door.

ghost towns photo: house - Ruthilda IMG_2599.jpg

Should they open it? What lies behind it?

I’d like to think I wouldn’t go through that door. But, then again, I am curious by nature.

That’s how Evans writes. He entices you to go further, to ignore that gut feeling and do what you know you shouldn’t.

More suspense then horror, Black Door takes you into the other side. Beware what waits.

I’d recommend this for pre-teens, teens and adults.

Dawn of a Dark Knight

goodreads-badge-add-plus

In the shadows of our world, a secret band of warriors fights to protect us. They are the last line of defense against an evil no human can stop.

~~~~~~
Ashor Vlahos, as Prime Magus, the leader of the last eight magi, is duty bound to find a healer. One is needed, and needed now, as an old enemy has returned.
The Gods have chosen Doctor Kira Hardy. She saved Ashor ten years ago.
Kira agrees to help when the magi are devastated by a daemon attack. Now Ashor insists she stay and become their healer, their akhrian.
There’s a big problem though. Kira likes her life. She doesn’t believe in these Gods, and she just wants to go home.
An even bigger problem is the attraction between Ashor and Kira.
It’s is forbidden for him to be with their akhrian, but since Kira doesn’t believe in the Gods, she sees something she likes and goes for it.
And she sees Ashor. Toned muscles, rock hard abs, and those tattoos. She would love to do things to those tattoos.
man with tattoos photo: Dermaglyphs Tattoo2.jpg
Poor Ashor is already half insane, close to his turning. Kira could be his undoing.
He’s been experiencing blackouts brought on from fighting with deamons. Their evil souls are poisonous and work on a magus, corrupting their kem-seki and causing them to go berserk..
When that happens, there’s no going back, and they have to be destroyed by another Magus
Ashor is so close, he knows it’s only a matter of time.
But still, he gets all twisted up in his boxers when Kira entices him to crawl between the sheets with her. He senses she is his senariai, soul mate, but their union is strictly forbidden.
“He’d sought her soul, but discovered he’d lost his own.”
 It’s all he can do to turn away and obey the Gods.
Now the enemy approaches, and it wants to finish them off, get rid of the magi and the healer and let darkness loose upon the world.
Why did this story work for me?
Because of several things.
First, great characters.
I couldn’t help but fall for Ashor and Kira. They are in the middle of a battle to save mankind and still have to deal with their raging desire for each other.
I think the Gods were laughing while they watched Ashor struggle to stay out of Kira’s bed.
man with tattoos photo: senual man tattoos.jpg
You know how they say almost dying can make you fall into bed together, just so you know you’re alive? Kira and Ashor have to deal with this a lot and it gets funny and pretty steamy.
But this thought always stops Ashor from going too far.
“If he horizontal mamboed with her, the gods wrath would pour down on them.”
Second, the peripheral characters.
Each is well written with distinct voices and personalities.
They helped flesh out the story and I grew quite fond of some of them.
The magi are sexy, fierce warriors and the bad guys are truly vile.
I would like to read their stories.
Third, originality.
It’s hard to find a book with new beings and a new twist on an old story.
The Magus are unique and fascinating and the forbidden love is more fun than frustrating.
The author kept the sexual tension just right. And she also kept me guessing as to whether these two would ever be together, or would I have to wait for another book.
Fourth, editing.
If there were any typos and such, they were so minor they didn’t make a blip on my radar. The book read smoothly, keeping  me up late, turning the pages to hurry and see what was coming next.
Fifth, sarcasm.
I like some sarcasm, or snark, in my characters. Makes it fun and keeps me grinning. As long as there’s not too much. In this case, it was just right.
So, there you have it. Five reasons I recommend this book.
Then there’s the pure enjoyment I got out of reading it.There was plenty of action, it was never dull. I could picture the scenes in my mind and visualize the characters. I left feeling like I knew them .
For today’s post, I’ll be telling you about The Dead of Winter by Lee Enderlin
The Dead of Winter
goodreads-badge-add-plus
For a horror story to be really good, it has to have a bad-ass villain.
This book has one.
Don’t let her small size fool you. She’s no longer human and she’s got a taste for man flesh.
This story starts a long time ago. Back in 1714,  when Indians had never met the white man.
It’s the worst famine any of them can remember. They have to make another hunting trip to replenish their food or they’ll all starve when winter truly sets in.
When the hunters fails to return from a hunting foray, White Moon fears the worst. She fears the white men have killed her tribe.
She’s all alone. The only one left alive after the white men killed the other women and children.
It’s been days and she has no idea when or if anyone is coming for her.
It couldn’t hurt to just have a little. Just one small piece. What else could she do?
So, White Moon strips off a small piece of meat from one of the dead. Just enough to get her through one more day.
The next day, other members of her tribe find her. She’s saved.
But she can’t let them see what she’s done. If they do, she’s doomed.
I’m sure you’ve figured out she’s doomed.
They perform a grotesque ritual and bury her body.
One day, she’ll rise again and take revenge on the white men.
windigo photo: Windigo tumblr_m3xrmse1Ka1rutx6lo1_500.jpg
Present day in Claridge, Connecticut.
It’s been a long winter and spring is no where in sight.
Bodies are being discovered. They’ve all been devoured and posed in the same strange position.
No animal could pose them like this, so who or what is killing them.
As the medical examiner puts it, ” I hesitate to use the word ‘human’ in a bizarre case like this, but you got something out there that ain’t no bear or anything like it. In other words, someone put those people in that position.”
There’s some thing out there in the bone chilling darkness. Something hungry. Hungry for man flesh and hungry for revenge against the white men.
Windigo.
I got a good scare with this book.
That tiny creature lurking just on the periphery of the light, standing hunched over and so still. Just creepy.
In the beginning, you feel for White Moon, but by the end, you’ll fear the Windigo.
The story flashes to the past to give the necessary background. Then it returns to present day, where all hell breaks loose.
A very insidious horror story, with some ‘the sins of the fathers’ in it.
I felt sorry for the town of Emergence. These people had no idea why revenge was upon them. Why this creature demanded its pound of flesh.
I had a scary good time reading The Dead of Winter.
I especially liked the authors take on the Windigo. I haven’t found too many stories with this supernatural being in them, and this one had a curious spin on it.
Book Description:
Jake Weir, while on the set of his parent’s ghost hunting TV show, agrees to help a ghost investigate a 61 year-old murder.
Jake Weir is not like the other kids in Dusk, North   Carolina. Then again, Dusk, North Carolina is not like other cities. Known as one of the most haunted cities in America, behind Salem, Massachusetts and New Orleans, Louisiana, Dusk is ground zero for Jake’s ghost hunting parents.
The Weir family has arrived in Dusk eager to scope out some of the town’s 127 reported “paranormal properties,” which just happens to be the name of their own ghost hunting show: Paranormal Properties. What Jake doesn’t know, and what his parents could never imagine, is that Jake can see ghosts! And hear them. And talk back to them! This talent comes in handy when he runs into Dusk’s oldest, most famous ghost: one Frank Barrone, a one-time lounge singer made famous by his booze-soaked ballad, “Barroom Eyes.”
Frank was gunned down by a local mobster in 1951 and has been searching for his killer ever since. When he learns that Jake can see and hear him, Frank makes young Jake a deal: if Jake will help Frank find his killer, Frank will help his parents find a ghost to film for their upcoming Halloween Special on Public Access Channel #319. Jake enlists the only friend he’s made in Dusk, an overweight tomboy nicknamed “Tank,” to help him track down Frank’s killer. As clues emerge and old leads heat up, Frank and Jake learn they make quite a team. But will Jake find Frank’s killer? And will Frank find a real haunted house in time for Halloween?
 “Paranormal Properties is a great, family-friendly Young Adult novel about a boy who can talk to ghosts. Equal parts Scooby-Doo, CSI and the Hardy Boys, you will enjoy getting to know Jake, Frank and Tank as much as I did. Now, if only ‘Paranormal Properties’ was a real show I could watch on TV every week…” ~ Rusty Fischer, author of Zombies Don’t Cry
Short Excerpt:
“Silas…”
The voice was eerie, barely above a whisper. Jake paused, his sneaker poised above a grave as he stood in the middle of DuskCemetery.
It was nearly midnight and he’d grabbed the wrong flashlight before sneaking out of his bedroom window. It had run out of juice halfway through the graveyard, and he’d been blindly stumbling around ever since.
The moon was full, but it was frequently obscured by heavy cloud cover and he had to wait until another patch moved through to see very well.
He wasn’t scared, so much. Jake had a special relationship with graveyards, and this was far from his first time at the rodeo. Still, it was the first time a headstone had ever talked to him.
The voice grew louder.
“Silas…”
It was a female voice, sounding dark in a way a ghost might: dark and deep and frosty.
He risked another step, letting the moonlight guide his path. It was a big cemetery, and well-maintained as cemeteries go. There were headstones everywhere, some leaning, some taller than Jake.
“Silas…”
Jake turned to the left to follow the sound. It was coming from a massive tombstone two feet taller than he was, and three feet wider. He pointed the flashlight at it, but the beacon was dim, even after he banged it three times on the palm of his hand.
Then, suddenly, it lit, falling upon the dead soul’s name: “Rose Colder.”
It was there on the grave stone, but the flashlight flickered out just before he could read the dates.
“Silas…” came the eerie voice again, so close he could hear the ghost’s lips smacking.
But, wait. Did ghosts really have lips to smack?
Jake parted his own lips and spoke for the first time since walking into the graveyard. “R-R-Rose?”
He hadn’t meant to stutter, but he couldn’t help it. He heard a rasp, or a cough, and then the crunch of dry leaves behind the headstone.
“Silas?” was the reply, and then the rustling of cheap plastic against flesh. The clouds broke, the moon shone down, and a giant, yellow monster reared from behind the headstone, smiling.
Smiling?
“Gotcha!” said the beast, in a boastful, girlish voice. It was a girl, a giant girl, a living girl in a big, yellow raincoat.
“W— who are you?” Jake stammered, trying to hold his ground. He had to look up a good four inches to see her face.
Her eyes glittered beneath her short, greasy hair. She was heavy, but with her big smile and that cheerful way about her, she looked more nice than scary.
“I’m Tank,” she said proudly, inching closer to him with big black and white sneakers crunching over dry, dead leaves. “Who are you?”
“Jake Weir,” he said, relieved he didn’t stammer that time. “And who…who’s Silas?”
“Don’t you know?” she asked, sitting down on one of the large marble slabs that surrounded Rose Colder’s grave. She patted the one next to him, and he sat, too.
He didn’t know why, but even in a graveyard, even after pranking him in her big, yellow raincoat that made her look like a linebacker for an NFL team, this “Tank” girl didn’t scare him.
Much.
“No,” he replied.
Tank frowned. “Rose Colder,” she explained, “snuck out at midnight to meet her boyfriend, Silas Miner, in this very cemetery over a hundred years ago. But Silas’s Dad didn’t approve of his son dating a commoner, so he kept Silas from seeing her and sent a couple of local thugs to teach Rose a lesson. When the thugs showed up, Rose fought back…and lost. They buried her here, and legend has it that every night, at midnight, she rises from her grave to take revenge on the men who ended her life.”
“So…so that’s why you were calling me Silas?”
Tank nodded, and then slugged him on the shoulder. “What are you doing here, anyway?” Jake shrugged. He didn’t really want to tell her.
She pulled a flashlight from her raincoat pocket and flicked it on, right in his eyes. “Hey!” He held up a hand to shield his face.
“Wait, hold up.” Tank pointed the beam up. “What’s that on your hat?”
Jake blushed. He’d grabbed the hat at the last minute, not thinking about it. He had so many of them, and they all looked alike: black ball cap, neon green writing that spelled “Paranormal Properties.”
“You…you work for that TV show? The ghost hunting one?”
“You know about it?” Jake was surprised. They’d just gotten into town, and his parents hadn’t even filmed an episode here yet. That’s what he was doing out in the graveyard at midnight, trying to find something extra special for a new episode.
Of course, they’d kill him if they found out, but he figured it would be worth it if they finally got more than a handful of people to watch.
“Know about it?” Tank shouted. “I watch it every week! You know, the live feed on the web page. We don’t have any local channels that play it.”
Jake beamed in appreciation. “Cool,” he said.
“So,” Tank urged, nudging his knee with her own. He noticed she was wearing plaid pants under her yellow rain coat. “Do you work for it or what?”
“My Mom is the host. My Dad is the cameraman.”
Tank gasped and shoved Jake with each word. “No. Way! Get. Out. Of. Town!”
She stopped shoving him and stood up instead, yanking him by the sleeve of his T-shirt. Dragging him from the cemetery, she said, “I love your Mom. You have to tell me all about her.”
“Where are we going?” he asked, finally regaining use of his feet and catching up to her.
She saw him at her side, looked down and let him go. “There’s a diner around the corner, open all night. I’m buying you a hot fudge sundae and you’re going to tell me all about what it’s like to have famous parents.”
“Famous?” he chuckled as he followed her past the cemetery gate. His Mongoose bike was sitting there, dry and rusty, just where he’d left it.
“Sure thing.” She reached behind some bushes and lifted out a green ten speed with just one hand.
They mounted their bikes and, now that he was looking for it, Jake saw the neon sign for the Dusk Diner just around the corner. Yet, something was still bugging him. “Hey,” he said, “what were you doing in the graveyard at midnight?”
Tank shrugged. “Couldn’t sleep.”
“So you went to a cemetery?”
She  shrugged again, pedaling off. While struggling to catch up, Jake heard her say, “Hey, I met you, didn’t I?”
My Review
The beginning made me realize the author is a prankster, just like Frank is.
Frank may be dead, but he’s never boring, as Jake finds out.
Jake figures Dusk, North Carolina is just like every other town.  He’s seen plenty. Always moving town to town, haunting to haunting, with his parents.
You see, his mother is the host of the TV show Paranormal Properties and his dad is the cameraman.
paranormal investigations photo: IR07 Light IR07.jpg
They chase from one haunted place to the next, hoping to catch on video that elusive moment, proof of the afterlife.
Jake is their gopher, always helping with the setup, but never in front of the camera. No way, Jose!
He’s not unhappy, but he is lonely. Hard to make friends when you’re always moving on.
He does make a friend in Tank. She’s a bit of a prankster too.
These two are good for each other, and they need each other.  They’ve both had to grow up fast.
Tank isn’t the only friend Jake makes.
Frank makes himself known to Jake. It’s taken him years and years to materialize into a solid, visible form, and it figures that this kid, Jake is the only one who can see him.
Beggars can’t be choosers and he enlists Jake’s help to solve his murder.
Once Jake gets used to having Frank appear whenever he likes, he agrees to help solve his murder.
But this is a secret, just between them, and Frank, being a prankster, uses his abilities to tease Jake’s parents. It’s all in fun and keeps them from moving on.
A sleuthing Jake will go.
The best place to start is with Crackers, the caretaker at the Lido Lounge, the speakeasy where Frank died.
There’s not many witnesses left. Most are long dead.
Crackers was there that night, and as he describes how it went down, Jake is distracted by ghostly images. He looks at Crackers and all he sees is the rundown building. When he glances to the stage, he sees the club the way it was. Cigarette smoke floats above the room, people are laughing, ice is tinkling in glasses, and the band is jammin. Then he hears the whiskey velvet voice of Frank crooning out his song.
speakeasie photo: speakeasie speakeasy.png
Back to Crackers and the rundown lounge. Jake is the only one seeing this.
This scene was some great visual writing. Felt like I was there.
I had so much fun following Jake from clue to clue. I felt like I was a ghost, following him around, urging him on.
And I got some chuckles out of Jake’s parents.
They are so obsessed with finding proof of ghosts, they don’t see what is going on right under their noses.
Kind of reminded me of the mom in E.T. She was always so frazzled she never had a clue an alien was living in her daughters closet.
You quickly become attached to the characters, engrossed in the puzzle of Frank’s murder, and can’t wait to see how it all ends.
The ending had me grinning from ear to ear.
Please tell me there will be more soon.
Paranormal Properties is a quick, fun read. All ages will enjoy it.
About the Author:
paranormal me me
I was fascinated with the paranormal when I was very young. I always felt like someone was around me even when I was alone. It caused me to be inspired to write a paranormal book where a teenager can see and hear ghosts and actually makes friends with one.
I use to love to write short stories in school and always wanted to be a writer. But raising children and working jobs I just could not find the time to indulge my passion. Then my children grew up and I ended up having two teenagers at home who did not need as much attention from me. I started toying with the idea of writing once again. So setting aside 5 to 10 minutes per day to write at least one page I could end up with a book a year. Now Paranormal Properties is published and I have a list of 8 more books to write. I don’t think I”ll be slowing down anytime soon.
In preparation for the launch of his new release, Brandon R. Luffman has stopped by for an interview.
Brandon R. Luffman
Frostwalker
goodreads-badge-add-plus
Thanks so much for sharing with us today, Brandon.
Let’s get to know more about you.
1) Why don’t we start by having you tell us a little about yourself.
Well, I’m not all that interesting. That’s why I write fiction – it’s way more interesting than real life! But, here’s the short bio: I was born in Georgia, but my parents moved back to North Carolina before I was old enough to really remember it. So, I’m technically a Georgia Peach, although I’ve always thought of myself as a Tarheel. I fell into writing at a fairly young age, in the sixth grade, and I was immediately hooked on that buzz you get from writing for the entertainment of others. Having the ability to make people laugh or cry or feel just about any emotion you can imagine, just by the power of storytelling – that’s awesome stuff! So, I wrote off and on for years, but never really got serious about it until a few years ago. And that really is the key to being a writer: You have to get serious about it. You have to put in the work and not just do it for fun. If you want to do it for fun, that’s fine, but if you want to build a career out of it, you have to work at it. Someday, I hope to take my own advice and actually make a living off of this!
2)  What brought you to use Cherokee-Tsalagi lore in your story?
I’m not really sure, to be honest. I’m a pantser, not a plotter, so I really didn’t know where the story was going or what would happen next. The appearance of John Birdsong and Grandmother was as much a surprise to me as it was to anyone else. As the story progressed, I didn’t know what part they would play, but by the end it all made sense. It was fascinating actually, because these characters (and others, of course) did things earlier in the book that I had no idea would mean anything and I didn’t know WHY they were doing these things. But in the end of the book, it all came together and made sense. Reading a book with that sort of unfolding nature is fun, but having a story unfold itself that way while you’re writing it – that always amazes me. Maybe it goes back to Stephen King’s theory that he put forth in his book On Writing, that stories are already there, more or less fully formed, and the writer is just digging it out like a fossil.
I can say that here in western North Carolina, the Cherokee people are very much a part of the culture, although not always obviously so. In my own neck of the woods they’re not commonly encountered these days, but almost everyone whose family has been in the area more than a few generations has at least a few Cherokee in their family tree. So, it’s quite possible that when I needed something that amounted to what locals in this area might consider “mystical people”, my mind just popped that out.
3)  When describing Frostwalker, what genre would you place it in?
When I originally wrote it, I felt like it was straight Horror. However, in the past few years I’ve gained a bit more of an understanding of sub-genres and I think it might be more precise to call it Survival Horror. However, while I don’t think I’ve ever seen the term used before, maybe it could also be called Action Horror, as it feels like that sort of story to me. Once the story starts really rolling, it seems very action-oriented. But, I’m not too concerned about labels – simply calling it Horror is good enough for me!
4)  You’ve written some short stories, which I loved. What inspired you to write a full length novel and why Frostwalker?
Thank you! I was tickled pink at your reviews of Out After Dark and The Card. I really appreciate those!
Interestingly enough, Frostwalker was written prior to any of my currently available short work. Frostwalker originated as a NaNoWriMo attempt way back in 2009. For those who don’t know, NaNoWriMo is where you attempt to write a 50,000 word novel during the 30 days of November. I had done NaNoWriMo a couple of times before, but never hit the 50,000 word target. However, during NaNo 2009, I just roared right along. The first night, I wrote over 13,500 words. I hit the 50k mark just after 1 am on the morning of November 16th. I kept writing, because while I had “won” NaNoWriMo, I still had a story to finish. If I recall correctly, I finished the story with around 81,000 words on November 27th or 29th, although there had been a few days that month where I wasn’t able to do any writing at all. When I finished, and realized that I had actually written a full novel, I’m man enough to admit that I wept.
After that, I went through lots of beta-readers and produced several drafts, each a little better than the last. This is really where a book is crafted. The first draft is just something you throw together. It’s the framework, the starting place. The actual crafting and creation of something more than just an idea comes from taking that first draft and editing and polishing it until it’s as good as you can make it. That’s the key, really, and what NaNoWriMo strives to teach participants: You can’t allow yourself to edit and second-guess the first draft. Just vomit it out there and get the word count in. It doesn’t matter if it’s crap – it may actually BE crap. But, you have to start with that, then you edit it to within an inch of its life and you might just end up with a great story. But you can never get there without that first draft, and that is all about getting words on paper – or on disk, whichever you prefer. It’s all about word count. Good comes later – after the work is done.
However, the manuscript wasn’t worked on heavily until last year. I was considering self-publishing it, and actually planning to do so, even though I had never hired a professional editor. I thought it had been proofread so many times, by so many different beta readers, that it was ready to go. Besides, editors are expensive, right?
Well, as luck would have it, I found out that editors aren’t always expensive. Also, they’re something you cannot do without. I can’t stress this enough: A competent editor is something you simply must have in order for your book to be the best it can be. I was lucky enough to meet two great editors, both of which I met through Twitter. First was Pauline Nolet, who is amazing to work with and just a great gal in general. She’s now what I consider “my editor”, because I can’t imagine publishing something without getting her to go through it first. The second editor was Rebecca Hamilton, author of The Forever Girl. In addition to her writing, Rebecca offers editing services and she is really top-notch. Both of these ladies went through the manuscript and it is impossible to describe the difference their input has made on the quality of the story. Much of it is subtle, but it really took the book to a new level.
5)  Tell us something good and bad about your writing experience?
Well, there’s a LOT of good that’s come from my writing, especially in the past couple of years that I’ve really been taking it seriously. Perhaps first and foremost is all of the great people I’ve met: other authors, book bloggers, enthusiastic readers. There’s just so many great folks who I’ve met through joining this vast community of “book people”, and the people you regret meeting are truly few and far between. But, in the process, I’ve also become a much stronger writer, through the exchange of ideas and techniques with these people, and with the additional motivation to WRITE, and therefore actually practice the craft, that comes with being a part of all that.
As for a bad side of the writing experience, I can’t say there’s been nothing, but it’s hard to point to anything and say “That right there, that’s bad.” Bad reviews are just bad reviews – can’t take that too seriously. Rejection? Comes with the territory – that’s a writer’s battle scars, to be worn with pride. Really, for me, the worst thing has just been the constant struggle to overcome my own natural shyness and self doubts. I’ve always questioned my ability in whatever arena I’m operating in. It’s difficult for me to be confident in my ability as a writer, which is especially trying as an independent author who has to promote himself. There isn’t a marketing department to go out and tell everyone to go read my work – I have to go out there and tell people I’m worth reading. But, first, I have to convince myself that my work is worth reading. Sometimes, that’s really hard to do.
6)  How do you pick character’s names and locations for your stories? Have you been to these places and are your characters based on yourself or people you know?
Locations are pretty easy. Even places I’ve never been, a little research and you can fictionalize something close enough. The important thing is to capture the FEEL of that location, so that those who are familiar with it will recognize it and those who aren’t will still know it on the level that, say, a TV audience knows a place. There are differences between western Texas and eastern New Mexico, and a native will know the difference immediately, but you can capture the feel of the desert southwest and that’s generally good enough for fiction. Location is important, don’t get me wrong on that count, but there’s a reason why minimalist stage plays are effective. A man with a chair and a skull can perform Hamlet and it’s still Hamlet – the play’s the thing.
In Frostwalker, the locations are all fictional. However, most of them are based on some amalgamation of places I know personally. The town of Wynn is built up of bits and pieces of local towns here in North Carolina, the exterior locations are based, at least partially, on places I’ve been to in the area or even on my family’s farm.
As for the characters, there’s always a bit of the author in every character an author creates. Even if the character is of a different gender, or completely evil, or a supernatural being, their personality is formed by the author’s imagination. So, with Jake and Eric, who are gamers and geeks, somewhat the outsider type in a rural southern town, there’s a fair amount of myself in there. They’re certainly not me by any stretch of the imagination, but some of their traits come from myself, or my friends and family.
For the names, well, that’s really a hard thing for me. Names have always been a pain for me. One of my life-long hobbies has been roleplaying games, such as Dungeons & Dragons. I usually end up running the game, which means that any character the players meet is run by me. The absolute worst question a player can ask is “What’s his name?”. I have no idea how many hundreds of Bobs have been encountered in my games over the years. The barkeep? His name’s Bob. Town blacksmith? That’s Bob. Head of the town watch? Hermit on the edge of town? Maiden you just rescued from orcs? Bob. They’re all named Bob!
I can’t really say where the names Jake and Eric came from. I think maybe my mind just spit them out when I needed names because they’re simple, masculine, and easy to remember. There are a couple of amusing bits about those names, actually. First, it was probably nearly a year after I wrote Out After Dark that I realized that I’d used the name Eric again. In the long version I’ve been working on, there’s also a character named Jacob. The second amusing thing was something I encountered last month. I had never seen the TV show Jericho before, but we recently encountered it on Netflix and began watching it. I didn’t catch it immediately, but after three or four episodes, I realized that the main character and his brother are named Eric and Jake.
But, sometimes you need a name and have to come up with one some way or other. In The Card, I needed a name for the protagonist and his two friends. I ended up swiping the name Jason for the protagonist from friend and fellow author J. Scott Sharp, and the names Freddie and Brian I took from members of the band Queen!
7)  What is a typical day for you?
I’m not sure if I have a typical day. I know that currently, my life is dominated by the fact that I don’t have a routine. That’s a very bad thing for writers! Aside from my writing, I also have a business I run from home as well as another part-time job that doesn’t require a lot of hours, but is six days a week. So, my schedule is always fluctuating. Sometimes I’m a full-on night owl, and a week later I might be on a “normal” schedule. I have a pretty flexible work schedule, so when I sleep varies and drifts, which means I’m all over the place.
So, for now, I don’t really have a typical day. But, I do hope to pin down some sort of routine soon, as it’s been very difficult to write with the way things have been the past few months!
8)  What’s next? Do you have anything new in the works?
Right now, writing has been very difficult for me. Largely, this is due to the lack of a routine I just mentioned. However, I do have some projects that are in the works, when I can work on them. I’m still working on a story that I’ve been calling A Man With A Gun, which is a near-future sci-fi/western piece that may be a short story or could grow into something more substantial. I haven’t been able to work on it much lately, but it’s what I consider my “current project” – aside from getting Frostwalker finished and released, of course. There’s also a few other ideas and half-finished pieces that may or may not be worked on. Most notable of these is probably the long version of Out After Dark, which I haven’t worked on in well over a year. That’s at 14,000 words (still) but it’s something I really want to see come to fruition eventually.
So, nothing new to report aside from the same things I’ve been working on for the past few months. Of course, ideas are always coming to me!
Five Fun Shorts
1) Favorite movie?
This is a really tough one! I love movies, but it’s hard to say that I have a favorite. There are so many great movies out there! I’m going to cheat and give you a few: Army Of Darkness is great. I love the Indiana Jones movies. Star Trek movies are good, especially the earlier ones, and I really loved 2 through 4. The Matrix was great, and I even liked the sequels. A Knight’s Tale was lots of fun. Kate & Leopold was a good romantic flick. I really like all kinds of movies!
army of darkness photo: Army Of Darkness army-of-darkness.jpg
Watch out for Bruce’s “boomstick?”
Shop smart. Shop S Mart!
My favorite of all of the Evil Dead movies!
Looks like we have similar tastes.
2)  Favorite genre (movies and books)?
I’m all over the place here as well. For books, I used to read a lot of fantasy stuff. But, these days I’m reading all kinds of things. Maybe a good example is to consider Stephen King’s catalog. He’s my favorite author and if you look at his work over the past several years, you note that while he’s considered a “horror author”, he’s really writing sci-fi and fantasy as much as anything else. My reading habits have similarly broadened, and I tend to read just about anything as long as it has a good story.
For movies, I likewise enjoy all sorts, but sci-fi, fantasy, and action are probably my favorites.
steven king photo: steven king king.jpg
I also love “The King!”
It’s a tie for me between Steven King and Dean Koontz!
3)  Beach or swimming pool?
Definitely swimming pool! I love the beach, but I prefer to actually swim rather than struggle against the tide. Not to mention that every time I go into the ocean I end up with something touching my foot. Who knows what it might be? Was it a fish? Some sort of jellyfish? A shark?! Cthulhu? That was almost certainly Cthulhu!
cthulhu photo: Cthulhu cthulhu.jpg
Sorry Brandon:(
Even swimming pools aren’t safe from Cthulhu!
4)  Favorite comic book character?
The Punisher! Such a bad-ass. Very much driven by emotion, but still a hardcore dude, and in a universe where people with superpowers are everywhere, this guy is fighting evil without them. Just guns – lots of guns! I also always liked how much of the Punisher’s inventory of weaponry was largely based on real-world gear.
the punisher photo: punisher punisher.jpg
I love The Punisher.
Also loved the first movie with Thomas Jayne!
He was perfect!
5)  Got a phobia?
I’ve got two! First, I don’t handle heights very well. I’ve always thought it was odd that I love flying, especially in small planes where you actually FEEL like you’re flying, but it is really hard for me to climb a ladder to the roof of my house. The second is bees – in particular, wasps and hornets. I have an unreasonable fear of them. They’re fast, they’re agile, they’re often aggressive, they can sting you multiple times, and it hurts like a mother! Maybe I’m not being so unreasonable after all…
Amazon Reviews
Conclusion:
A fantasy adventure that features lots of action and intrigue that is geared to a YA audience.
There are moments in this tale that are especially well done… story telling at a level that I’d be interested to see what this author would do with an adult orientated fantasy work.
As a dedicated YA work… 5 Stars.
~ Ray Nicholson
The beginning of a great adventure!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading the first book of the Trail of Bones series. It is an unpredictable adventure, with heartwrenching acts of love and friendship. The story ended before I was prepared to put my Kindle down, and now I will wait anxiously for the second book to be published. In the meantime, I think I’ll read it again with my eleven-year-old son; I’m sure he’ll love it as much as I do. Give it a read!
~ HRL
Enthralling story line that really pulls you in
…The characters were some that I will not easily forget because he explains their background in a way that makes the reader really connect and believe they are real. He creates a world that I long to see. I really grew to both love and hate different characters. I think that is a sign of a really great author when they can make us feel so much emotion towards a character.
About Chris Salisbury
Chris Salisbury has been writing fantasy, science fiction, suspense, and action thrillers for years in independent films. Now he’s expanded his love of good movies, such as Gladiator, Counte of Monte Cristo, Saving Private Ryan, Braveheart, Star Trek, to the world of books. Trail of Bones is the first book in a planned four part fantasy, young adult series targeted at readers of all ages.
The father of four enjoys a wide range of interests from scuba diving to softball, coaching basketball to playing Battlefield 3 on his Xbox 360 or NCAA Football with his sons. He is also a big advocate for literacy and reading for young boys. There seem to be few titles that appeal to young boys and young men to hold their attention, trigger their imaginations and create a love of reading. Chris is out to change that.
In addition to the Trail of Bones series, he also has a number of other titles in development including historical fiction, action, suspense thrillers, and several science fiction properties. There’s a lot more on the horizon, so enjoy Trail of Bones but be sure to look for more captivating titles from Chris Salisbury in the near future.
~
In the year 1845, before the mystical land of Fallada was separated from the realm of men forever, the two worlds coexisted in harmony. Man could mingle freely in the world of the Elves and Faeries at will and peace reigned.
In the hills of Shropshire, England, just miles from the gate separating the village of Ludlow from the world of mystical creatures, farmer’s daughter Zara Wells longs for answers. It is not only the golden hair that trail feet behind her, or the strange hue of her violet eyes that separates her from the other girls in her village. There is something inside of her, something touched by magic that longs to know more about what lies on the other side of the gate.
In Fallada, darkness has begun to spread. As the youngest and most beautiful girls of her village begin to disappear, Zara comes closer to discovering the true circumstances surrounding her birth. Little does she know, that the closer she comes to the answers she so desperately desires, the closer she will come to being ensnared in the dark queen’s web of growing treachery.
Hi ya’ll! Welcome to my stop on the January Black Blog Tour.
Tour Schedule
January Black
Sixteen-year-old genius Matty Ducayn has never fit in on The Hill, an ordered place seriously lacking a sense of humor. After his school’s headmaster expels him for a small act of mischief, Matty’s future looks grim until King Hadrian comes to his rescue with a challenge: answer a question for a master’s diploma.
More than a second chance, this means freedom. Masters can choose where they work, a rarity among Regents, and the question is simple.
What was January Black?
It’s a ship. Everyone knows that. Hadrian rejects that answer, though, and Matty becomes compelled by curiosity and pride to solve the puzzle. When his search for an answer turns up long-buried state secrets, Matty’s journey becomes a collision course with a deadly royal decree. He’s been set up to fail, which forces him to choose. Run for his life with the challenge lost…or call the king’s bluff.
Refreshingly intelligent and loads of fun!
I lost a few hours as I read this book. It’s a Young Adult novel that is refreshingly and astonishingly intelligent, and the love story is perfectly played out.
~Christine Ashworth, Amazon Review
The mystery was intriguing – I loved how Wendy Russo weaved in all her secrets throughout the book, how she incorporated just enough to keep you reading, while never actually divulging much of anything. I was guessing for most of it and that’s pretty hard to make me do.
~Julie, Clean Teen Reads
Wendy Russo has created a masterpiece.
Author Wendy S. Russo
Wendy S. Russo got her start writing in the sixth grade. That story involved a talisman with crystals that had to be found and assembled before bad things happened, and dialog that read like classroom roll call. Since then, she’s majored in journalism (for one semester), published poetry, taken a course on short novels, and watched most everything ever filmed by Quentin Tarantino. A Wyoming native transplanted in Baton Rouge, Wendy works for Louisiana State University as an IT analyst. She’s a wife, a mom, a Tiger, a Who Dat, and she falls asleep on her couch at 8:30 on weeknights.
In Tremeirchson, a barn leader’s children are expected to follow their parents into the sky, becoming riders of the magnificent winged horses that are the medieval Welsh village’s legacy. Neither Emma nor Davyd, however, want to follow that tradition.
Sixteen-year-old Emma risks losing her family by following her heart. Eager to take her place in the air, she longs to ride a forbidden winged colt born in barn of her father’s biggest rival. She also dreams of the rival’s sons, not sure which she truly loves. Bold and exciting, Evan will someday lead his father’s barn. Davyd is quieter, more dependable, with an ability to get things done. Her father disapproves of both boys and pushes her toward an ambitious newcomer. He also insists she ride the colt he’s picked for her.
Davyd, also sixteen, is plagued with a secret—he is afraid of heights. Refusing to become a rider means public humiliation, his parents’ disappointment, and lifelong ridicule from his brother, Evan. He reluctantly prepares to join his family aloft in the Aerial Games that provide the entire village with its livelihood and tries desperately to think of an alternative.
As Tremeirchson’s barns prepare for the Rider Ceremony, winged horses suddenly start dying. Shocked, the adults hesitate, mired in tradition and politics. Is it a disease or poison? Accidental or purposeful? Someone must discover the answer and act before all the winged horses in the world are gone forever.
This is a sequel to ON A WING AND A DARE, but it’s not necessary to read them in order.
Nineteen year old Nia is shocked when she is secretly offered the leadership of Third Barn. This new barn full of flying horses will need someone confident, experienced, and innovative, so why are both warring factions pursuing an untried girl? Suspicious that both sides want a puppet instead of a leader, Nia races to discover their secrets before making the biggest decision of her life.
Some of those secrets are unknowingly buried in the disconnected memories of a young groom named Owain. Terror and guilt haunt Owain’s dreams – and then a face from his nightmare arrives in High Meadow. Owain looks for answers in his past and uncovers a dangerous plot that could doom High Meadow’s future. How can he foil the plot and save his people as well as the winged horses?
So what do you think? Want to ride a winged horse? I do!!
