Synopsis:

I traded my death for love. I wasn’t given a choice. His decision has caught up with us, so now I am a living, breathing catalyst to war between Heaven and Hell.

The violations he committed saved my life. Since the collision, he’s appeared everywhere. In my hospital room, my school, even my house. He shows up in my paintings, my drawings, in all of my art projects. I can’t stop thinking about him.

He says his name is Gabriel, and he doesn’t understand what’s happening to him. He doesn’t know how I can see him or why he wants me in ways that should be impossible for a Celestial.

My obsession grows. I need him to hold me, kiss me—give all of himself. For every day he protects me, the consequences loom darker and taller. Soon, they’ll crash down on us.

The war is about to begin.

MY REVIEW

How could I resist a story starring four sisters, and they’re witches. At least, in the beginning they all are. Then Taralie gets kidnapped and turned by some vampires with their own agenda.

When the sisters turn to The Twelve, the decision makers for the Milunfran, its ordered that they kill Taralie. Being halfings, the purebloods don’t much care for them and this comes as no surprise. This is the thanks they get after banishing all sorts of evil beings, protecting humans from evil.

The sisters have no intention of killing Tara, so they go into hiding. With the Milunfran and the vampires after them, they find some unlikely allies in a group of vampires also in hiding.

The halflings have been dropped right in the middle of the vampires long raging civil war.

It became quite interesting when  the vampires joined the sisters. I knew something big would have to happen for the alliance to work. Something huge happened and it bumped up my excitement. I also knew there was going to be some romantic entanglements and I was right. Throw some funny, kick butt witches and some sexy, alpha vampires together, and there’s bound to be powerful attractions. I caught myself trying to play matchmaker.

Besides great characters, the author wrote some lively dialogue, sprinkling humor here and there. She also built a complex world and added lots of suspense and dangerous situations for her characters.

I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next, in Abomination.

But when Taralie is kidnapped by vampires and converted into the undead, her sisters are ordered to execute her for crimes against the Milunfran order. Refusing, the sisters become fugitives from both their kind and vampires alike.

Ignorant and hunted, Taralie becomes entangled with unlikely allies, a band of vampires in hiding from the ruling vamperic government. With this new addition to their coven Taralie must balance duty with desire while learning not everything is as it seems, their enemies are worse than she knows, and she could be on the verge of ending a thousand-year-old civil war.

Abomination – Book 2

MY REVIEW

This being the second book in the series, I’ll try not to put in spoilers.

 Tara and her sisters have formed a kind of truce with the Noricum, the vampire rulers, and things have returned to a more normal rhythm.

Now the excitement is all about an upcoming wedding.  But things change quickly and the truce is broken.  The Noricum will tolerate no threat to their rule and the sisters, along with their mates can either serve the vampires or die. There is no bargaining. Just those two choices. Serve or die.

Told through the perspective of Alex, Tara’s new husband, this second book was harder to take.

While on their honeymoon. they stumble upon some local vampires preparing to feed on a human couple. This is something Tara can’t turn away from and the results of her actions are tragic. One beloved character loses their life, the truce with the vampires is shattered, and Tara will pay a horrific price for her choice.

I applaud the author for not being afraid to put her characters in difficult, sometimes, unsurviveable situations. By the time I reached the end of this book, I felt like I’d been put through an emotional wringer. Such sadness, hopelessness, and anger were evoked. I couldn’t believe what happened to Tara and now that I’m moving on to the third book, I fear the outcome.

Synopsis

Taralie Severin and her sisters have secured a non-aggression pact with the rulers of the vampire world, the Noricum. Having relocated to Cannon Beach, Oregon, Alexander prepares to marry his beloved Tara. But when an encounter with average vampires goes wrong, the Severin coven’s fragile amnesty with the Noricum is destroyed. With the supremacy of their rule challenged, the Noricum set out to restore the balance of power, leaving the Severin family two choices – Die on their feet, or live on their knees.

MY REVIEW

~~~~~
The Noricum are still after the Severin coven, so they take shelter on the water, living on a boat while they wait to see whether Tara will ever be herself again. She survived the abomination, but now she’s only partially recovered and without their leader, the clan is more at risk than ever.
The author kept me busy with so much drama, but it was always in the back of mind, what about Tara? I couldn’t stand it that she was so reduced, so not in control. It wasn’t until about half way into the story that I got some hope.
And my trust of the Severin coven was almost non-existent. In the beginning of this series, they had no compunction about ordering Tara’s death. And throughout the series, I felt they were self-serving and held themselves above the Milunfran witches. I didn’t see why that would change now and had little hope they’d choose to help the sister’s clan over their own skins.
I’ll provide no spoilers, give no hints about where the rest of the story goes. But, I will say this is a thrilling, nerve-wracking next installment. One that still lingers, still has me recalling how far this story came from the beginning.
Strangled from within by Verus’s accumulated memories, the eldest Severin sister struggles under the weight of so many conciseness inside her mind. But the Noricum are not idle, nor are they forgiving. Enraged by Tara’s murdering of their princess, they hunt the Severins relentlessly. After turning a powerful halfling and declaring open war, the Severin coven must choose between defending the Milunfran witches protecting humanity or their own extinction.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
I’m Lauren Hodge, a chemist turned author with three children, a lot of friends no one else can see, and a swearing habit. Writing is something I stumbled into on accident. I was reading fiction for the first time as an adult and wondered if I could do it. It never crossed my mind to publish until my twin got a hold of my manuscripts and pressured me into it like the cool drug seeking kid from the After School Specials. Because of that, my books are different. I don’t write because I have a story to tell. I write because there is a story inside my head and it’s merely using my fingers to get out. I enjoy writing protagonists that are flawed and enemies that aren’t. Not everyone is all good or all bad and I love the philosophical process of defining that grey area. There are two parts of communication. What is articulated and what is received for only the latter can compel action. You, the reader, are more important than me, the author. I relish understanding what you receive from my articulation. To help with that, I have editors – lots and lots of editors. Editors are the heroes authors need, but not the heroes they deserve. As an author, I strive every day to be worthy of professional editors. I’m the oldest of seven and have an identical twin/perfect organ donor.
R.J.’s Bucket List (from the likely to the absurd)
My entire life I have always seen myself with one goal in mind–become a published author and build a reading audience. To that end, mission accomplished. So let’s just jump in and see what I can come up with.
10. To finally own a computer advanced enough that I don’t have to rebuild it every year. Come on, people. MS Word, Facebook, and the ability to watch YouTube videos, is this too much to ask?
9. “Six months on the New York Times Bestseller list.” Sigh. Sorry, what was I saying?
8. To live long enough to see Marvel re-acquire the rights to the film adaptation of Spiderman so that they can finally make a version that’s not for-gossakes an embarrassing atrocity. (And I’ll just add–a great Wonder Woman movie because the world needs a great Wonder Woman movie.)
Speaking of comics:
7. A comic adaptation of my own work: I’m a lifelong comic book fan. I grew up reading the adventures of Spiderman, Wonder Woman, and their SF and horror variants (Dracula, Star Wars to name two major ones) I would love to see Blue or Rebecca turned into a gothic comic book tale Black and white. With art inspires by Bernie Wrightson. Yeah! Or perhaps a full-color adaptation of Captain Sayuri Arai and the plight of her mining spaceship the Red Lotus. Hey, someone call me. Let’s do this.
6. Pay me for movies! Sure, why not? Or a TV series. Or neither. Maybe Haunting Blue becomes a Sy-Fy Channel original. Maybe they do an okay job. Maybe they completely butcher it. That’s okay. Notice this is not a wish list for a successful adaptation (though that would be nice, in spite of the odds against it) rather, to have an idea optioned by Hollywood that may or may never get made. A property that requires the studio to write a check every couple of years to keep renewing that idea. Or as I call it, living the life of Asimov. And I’ll be honest, should this unlikelihood come to pass, I will be a total mercenary. I will not be P.L. Travers, creator of Mary Poppins, who fought Walt Disney every step of the way (and in spite of the claims of the recent bio-pic, completely hated the result). Make the movie. Make the TV show. Make it good, make it bad. As long as my books are around, I don’t care. Just put the check in the mail promptly.
The rest of this is a “if money were no object” and gets a little silly.
Shut up, it’s my bucket list.
5. Travel to Japan–the language barrier has always been daunting to me, and I am by nature a homebody. But if I were to go anywhere outside of the country, it would be the place that brought us all the awesome genre goodness of Godzilla, Speed Racer, Ultra Man, (the components of) Robotech, Battle of the Planets, and so much more incredible media sci-fi.
4. Acquire the rights to build my own amusement park: Warcraft World–Where Orcs and Night-elves walk side by side across cobbled paths and over those funky wooden spiral ramps and staircases to rides, merchandise, and simulations all in tribute to the world’s coolest MMORPG on the planet. Warcraft World–for those who find The Magical World of Harry Potter too mundane.
3. The ultimate home theater. With big screen, THX sound, reclining theater seats, my own popcorn machine and pop dispenser, and room for a couple hundred of my best friends. I guess I need a bunch of great movies to show, too.
2. Media Producer– Create the movies geeks want, done right. Let’s start with a proper I, Robot and help people forget about the Will “Ah hell no” Smith movie, along with Dragonriders of Pern, Elfquest, and a for-gossakes version of Dune that’s not an embarrassing atrocity.
1. Cyndi Lauper performing at my birthday party.
Shut up, it’s my bucket list.
MY REVIEW
My favorite part of this story is Fiona Felicity Shaefer, aka Fi Fi, aka Blue. She’s spunky yet vulnerable, lethal yet loving. And she’s only 17 years old.
Blue’s mother is a successful lawyer with little time to play mom so Blue is left to her own devices, hanging with college kids in Broad Ripple.
A great opportunity for her mom has them moving to the small town of Perionne and Blue isn’t too happy.  With only 1 year left, she has to finish her senior year of school among strangers.
Her blue hair and attitude makes her the enemy of the school bully, but it doesn’t take long for the dark side of her nature to emerge and she pounds him good. That’s when she meets Chip, a computer geek with electrifying eyes and an easy-going attitude.
There’s an urban legend in Perionne. A local man, Gunther is purported to have robbed the bank and then disappeared without a trace. Most believe he’s dead and there have been numerous reports over the last twenty years of his specter being spotted.
When Chip coerces Blue into doing something crazy, they find out first hand if the legend of Gunther is real and they just might not survive to tell.
The author told this story in two different points of view. You’ll read Blue’s story, which takes place in 2010. And you’ll read Gunther’s story from 1990.
It’s easy to follow as the author flashes from present to past and present again. I would be reading about Blue and be totally engaged. Then I’d be reading about Gunther and be thus enthralled. Whether in the present or the past, I couldn’t wait to see what was coming and it made for twice the fun.
I was thrilled to learn this is the first book in the Adventures of Blue Shaefer. I’ll be sure to check out further adventures, and I hope the author writes about Blue’s years in Broad Ripple. I’d like to know how she became so lethal.
A great adventure, an urban legend, and a bit of clean romance await you. I’d recommend this book to all adventure lovers.
MY REVIEW
I was so charmed by the quirky title and adorable cover art for this book I completely overlooked it’s being the second book in the Pawsitively Organic Mystery Series. Another fun title.
Even though I hadn’t read the first book, I had no trouble getting to know the characters and picking up on their history. It’s a fast, addictive read. I finished it in two sittings.
Stan (Kristan) hasn’t lived in Frog Ledge for very long and she’s become a bit of a corpse magnet. From what I gather happened in the first book, she seems to have a propensity for stumbling over dead bodies.
Her neighbors are part of a farmers co-op, growing organic crops. Each year they do a corn maze for Halloween. There a lots of scary monsters hidden throughout the maze. But no one was expecting to find a dead body, a real one. Somebody killed farmer Hal and left him in the maze.
Frog Ledge reminds me a bit of my home town. Stan’s business, making organic treats for dogs and cats, would fit right in. I got a kick out of the idea of her catering a doggie birthday party and could see her business doing well here. We have pet parades and all the animals wear costumes. It’s quite a fun day and growing every year.
The dogs are a big part of the story and I had several chuckles over their antics. Dogs will be dogs, even at a birthday party and their table manners are atrocious.
The town is filled with colorful characters, giving you plenty of suspects to choose from. And there’s a love interest. I was kind of hoping Stan and Jake would hook up. He seems like a nice guy, even though I didn’t get to know too much about him.
That’s why I’ll be reading the first book next. I want to be introduced to the stars of this series. Get to know them, find out what makes them tick. Yep, I’m a fan of character driven stories.
Even if you haven’t read the first book, you can still read this and easily fall into the series. It’s a fun mystery, perfect for a relaxing day by the pool or snuggling up in front of the fire on a cold winter night.
Synopsis:
The small town of Frog Ledge, Connecticut, has wholeheartedly embraced Kristan “Stan” Connor’s new business – preparing quality organic treats for dogs and cats. On a healthy diet, the animals may live longer…but one local farmer won’t be so lucky. As Halloween approaches, Stan is asked to cater a doggie costume party hosted by the Happy Cow Dairy Farm. Part of a local co-op, Happy Cow specializes in organic dairy products, and farmers Hal and Emmalee Hoffman have started opening up the farm for parties, offering a “haunted” corn maze as an added attraction. When Hal’s lifeless body is found in the maze, the police at first suspect his wife, but Stan soon learns the dairy farmer had plenty of enemies – from bitter family members to shady business associates. If Stan can’t extract a kernel of truth from the labyrinth of lies, she may be the next one to buy the farm…
About This Author
Liz Mugavero has been writing stories since she could hold a pen. Before that, she would tell them to anyone who would listen (not many at the time). After deciding early on she would write books for a living, she practiced by writing bad, angst-filled poems, short stories and even a storyline for a soap opera–all by age 15. She never wavered from her goals despite all the usual questions including, “So are you going to be an English teacher with that degree in English?” or, “That writing thing sounds nice, but how are you REALLY going to make a living?”
She went on to get a master’s in writing and publishing and spent time in journalism, PR, and presently, corporate communications. And she’s confident this writing thing IS the way to make a living.
Aside from writing, she loves animals (has a houseful), the beach, reading other writers’ masterpieces and Starbucks coffee.
The cover art for Dark Nights is spectacular. That alone made me want this book.
Then I read the blurb. An alien intelligence has been observing us. It knows best how to save us.
I don’t know about you, but I picture all kinds of wrong in this. Does this intelligence have feelings. Is it as cold as a machine? This won’t bode well for humanity.
Check out the tour.
Meyer shut the door after the last person left and sat down in the nearest chair, directly across from Doug, rather than his usual spot at the head of the table. Doug waited for him to speak.
“It’s a planet,” Meyer said finally. “And it’s in an orbit directly opposite ours, at a distance of approximately one AU.”
Doug didn’t reply. The implications were massive, as were the questions. After a few seconds, Meyer rose from his seat and walked to the window, looking outside at the sloping volcanic Hawaiian landscape as he talked.
“Nobody knows where it came from, but it’s there, verified by NASA.”
“Using their STEREO satellites?”
“Yes, a few hours ago. But you and Foley at Atacama saw it first. STEREO was trained on another star when you logged the object. It took some time to reposition STEREO’s lenses. Because of their orbital distance ahead and behind us, together they will be able to keep tabs on the object at all times. We’re expecting some images soon, which will be free of the sun’s coronal interference.”
“So we’ll have a better view and can determine if its orbit is stable.”
“Correct.”
“But that doesn’t explain how it got there.”
“Correct again. But thanks to your discovery, and your reputation, you’ve been invited to an emergency conference in Washington. You’ll be meeting your plane at Pearl Harbor in two hours. Don’t bother to pack, there’s a helicopter on its way here, courtesy of the White House Chief Science Advisor.”
Welcome to my stop on the tour for Battle Not With Monsters by Overton Scott.
The author has chosen a hot topic for his story. Human trafficking is going on as we speak. It’s in every corner of the world.
Stories like this are important. While it is fiction, it still gets the point across. It still opens our eyes to this horrible crime and the innocent, tragic victims.
Neen sounds up to the task of handling the creeps. They are lower than pond scum and I hope she gives them everything they have coming to them.
Monsters come in human form too.
Check out this thrilling excerpt!
The first strip joint was called The Canyon and it occupied a large building designed to resemble a ranch house in the Texas hill country. The exterior was clad in faux limestone, with a stylized front porch crowned by fake dormer windows and supported by massive cedar logs. The double doors were made of faded wooden planks, with heavy iron horseshoes as handles.
Neen pulled the Toyota into a parking space, killed the engine and sat for a few minutes watching the action. The lot was crowded with cars. Groups of men in business suits, ties loosened and collars spread, ambled toward the door. Neen had never been in a strip joint, and didn’t know any women who had. What little she knew about clubs like this came from movies or books. The business seemed sordid and demeaning to women, which meant that Neen had never once considered that she would one day find herself in the parking lot of such a place.
Nor had she ever imagined she’d be asking whether a blonde-haired prostitute worked there.
She’d spent the drive debating just how to go about doing that. She could hardly walk in and ask to speak to the manager about a dead girl. Questioning employees would bring the manager in a hurry. And Neen didn’t even know if she’d be allowed in the club. Other women were going in, but they were part of a group. Would a single woman be admitted?
There was another reason to stay out of the building. The man who had killed Ray and the girl, who had tried to kill her, might be in one of these clubs. Or someone associated with him might be there. These were bad people, Jo Easterly had said. Neen didn’t want to run into them. Not yet.
She looked around the parking lot. Single guys walking hurriedly to the door. Groups of men headed in the same direction, moving at a more leisurely pace, laughing and joking. No pale, thin-faced assassin in sight.
Neen got out of the Toyota and walked briskly across the lot, angling toward the entrance. Two young women manned the door. One blonde. One redhead. Both attractive. They wore white lace tops, little more than a bra, and pale blue cowboy hats with white bands. Despite the ferocious heat, they were decked out in pale blue chaps and white cowboy boots. Both girls were sweating freely.
When Neen was ten yards from the door, the blonde beauty spotted her. Her smile faltered slightly.
“Hey,” said Neen, grinning.
The blonde returned the smile automatically, but Neen saw confusion in her eyes. She glanced at her co-worker with an imploring look.
The redhead reacted. Up close, in the lurid light, Neen could see the lines at the corner of her eyes, the wrinkles just starting to get a toe-hold around her mouth. She was clearly the leader of this two-woman unit. A little older than the blonde, and a lot more experienced at handling customers.
She slid two steps sideways and leaned casually against the door, blocking Neen’s access. Her smile was blinding, but brittle.
“Are you meeting someone here?” she asked.
“No.”
“I’m sorry. We don’t allow unescorted women inside.”
“That’s okay. I don’t want to go in. Can I ask you guys a question?”
Three men strolled up, arguing about the Cowboys’ chances this season. They broke off their conversation to stare at Neen, then shouldered past her. The redhead glided smoothly out of their way, opening the door with a flourish. White teeth gleamed.
“Welcome to The Canyon, gentlemen. Enjoy yourselves.”
The door swung shut behind the group. The redhead turned her attention to Neen.
“Are you a reporter? Because if you are, you’ve got to talk to the owner.”
“I’m not a reporter. I’m trying to find someone.”
“If you’re looking for your husband, you’ll have to wait outside.”
“I don’t have a husband. Or a boyfriend. I’m not here to make a scene, if that’s what worries you.”
“Good. So, who are you looking for?”
“A Russian girl I met at a party.”
The two girls exchanged sly smiles. No husband. No boyfriend. And looking for a hot Russian dancer. The implications were obvious.
Neen waved away their suspicions. “It’s nothing like that. Her purse was identical to mine. When I got home from the party, I found I had picked up hers by mistake. I assume she has mine. The guy who threw the party says she works at one of the clubs on Stemmons, but he can’t remember which one. So, here I am.”
Neen had run through a half-dozen scenarios that would justify her questions. The dead girl had been a friend and Neen had lost touch with her. Or the girl was a fellow student at a local community college who had dropped out of class. Neen could claim that she was worried about the girl and wanted to find her to see how she was doing. But Neen didn’t want to claim too close a relationship with the girl. A friend would know where the girl lived. A classmate would hardly be expected to be concerned about a casual acquaintance. Neen had thought the story about switching purses was the best option. She wouldn’t have to claim a familiarity with the girl that she didn’t have. The story wasn’t perfect, but none of the others had been either.
Author Overton Scott
Overton Scott is the pseudonym of a national bestselling author. Overton is interested in a lot of themes covered in the Neen Ford stories: martial arts, the warrior ethos, personal responsibility, and the concept of justice. Like Neen, Overton doesn’t think that the guilty should escape punishment on this earth. Unlike Neen, Overton prefers to write stories rather than take the law into his own hands. It’s just as morally satisfying, but less dangerous.As you are reading this, Overton should be working on the next Neen Ford adventure. MY REVIEW
I’m trying to think of one thing the author did wrong with this book, and can’t come up with anything.
The setting is great. The island of Colonial Bay reminds me of the movie The Fog. The locals are close-mouthed and secretive. Being isolated from the mainland, life is very different.
The creatures. Michael got very creative. I watched the movie Dagon, and drew from that to picture these fearsome beings. Even the ones that weren’t trying to kill people must have been terrifying to behold. I also remembered some of the characters from Pirates of the Caribbean and came up with some nasty critters.
The characters. So many of them, and that’s a plus for me. I love character driven stories, and the humans aren’t the only ones I connected with.
Artist Larry and his girlfriend Peggy. On the island for a vacation, Larry is awakened by a bad dream and gets up to get a drink. Glancing out the window, he sees something off the beach. A girl is being attacked by a shark near the shoreline. But then he’s not so sure it’s a shark. Something doesn’t look right.
Carol always new Atlantis was real. Now she’s discovered it. When things start pointing to Colonial Bay, her and Alan go to investigate. What they find is beyond belief. But, once they’re drawn into the middle of an ancient myth, when the beings of nightmares attack, they’ll have to believe if they want to survive.
With action and adventure, monsters, characters to love and loathe, and mysteries from the deep, Poseidon’s Children is a blast and I’m anxious to get started on Hades’ Desciples, the next book in this series.
I’m thrilled to give this 5 STARS
Synopsis
Man no longer worships the old gods; forgotten and forsaken, they have become nothing more than myth and legend. But all that is about to change. After the ruins of a vast, ancient civilization are discovered on the ocean floor, Coast Guard officers find a series of derelict ships drifting in the current-high-priced yachts and leaking fishing boats, all ransacked, splattered in blood, their crews missing and presumed dead. And that’s just the beginning. Vacationing artist Larry Neuhaus has just witnessed a gruesome shark attack, a young couple torn apart right before his eyes….at least, he thinks it was a shark. And when one of these victims turns out to be the only son of Roger Hays, the most powerful man in the country, things go from bad to worse. Now, to stop the carnage, Larry and his new-found friends must work together to unravel a mystery as old as time, and face an enemy as dark as the ocean depths.
MY REVIEW
This is the second book in this series. Just wanted to warn you if you haven’t read Poseidon’s Children yet. I’ll do my best not to spoil it for you.
The story picks up around two years after Colonial Bay and, while some of my favorite characters aren’t in this story, some are.
Carol and Alan are now living in Japan and settling in nicely when someone from Carol’s past comes calling. Kari is a very close friend from back in her college days. She’s asking for their help in finding her father. He disappeared after heading off to Nepal to find what he believes is the Ark. Not that he thinks it’s Noah’s Ark.
The decision is made for them when a rampaging tiger crashes into their home, bent on obliterating them. Carol and Kari manage to take it out and Alan reluctantly joins them as they prepare to scale the frozen mountain of Makalu, the location of the Ark. Also a place of hidden danger and myth. Even the Sherpa won’t guide anyone up there. Local superstition says it belongs to the Yeti.
Earl, now working for Homeland Security, is back and has a bigger role this time. He barely survives an attack by Hades Desciples. They want the old Gods back. Seems they forgot the bit about being slaves to them. Earl forms an alliance with the creatures that rescued him and they rush to protect his partner, laid up in a hospital.
This second book delves deeper into the history of these creatures. I learned more about how they came to be here and why.
There are three clans.
Poseidon’s Children are water based. They take on the aspect of creatures from the deep.
Zeus’ Warriors are human in appearance.
Hades’ Desciples are beasts of all kinds. Some of nature and some of fantasy.
All were created by someone or something for a reason that will be revealed.
Werewolves, bats, yeti, satyrs, and many more monsters will keep your hair standing on end.
Three clans.
Three agendas
One final outcome.
And one heck of a cliffhanger ending!
Just thought I’d warn ya.
Zeus’ Warriors: Book Three in The Legacy of the Gods Series is coming soon and I’ll be there!
If you love monsters, myths and urban fantasy, you’ll love this series and I recommend you give it a go.
Excerpt
When I awoke the next morning, the women of the boarding house were arguing again. It took me a moment to realize what was happening. And it wasn’t what I expected.
The little girl from before was curled into a ball on her bed, sobbing. The blonde lady from the fight was standing over her, barking.
“It’s not like I want to do this, kid. Really! But I can’t find a job, and you’re all set with the shop thing, so I’m gonna take off for a while. I’ll be back once I have a job. I promise.”
The girl wailed in agony.
“I’m sorry, okay?”
The pony-tailed lady and the other women in the room shot looks of contempt at the blonde one. She didn’t notice. She was too busy abandoning the kid.
“Fine. Well, if you’re just gonna sit there and act like a baby, I’m takin’ off.” The blonde turned to leave.
The little girl bolted upright and clung to the woman’s waist. “Mommy, please don’t go! Stay. Please!”
Mommy? That lady was the kid’s mother? I sat up in bed and felt something I hadn’t felt in years. I couldn’t quite place it.
“Please, Mommy. Don’t leave me!”
My eyes went hot.
My fingers touched them.
They were wet.
I hadn’t cried in years, not since my first week on the Line. I hadn’t allowed myself after that, for fear I couldn’t stop.
I rolled the warm tears through my fingertips. They felt alien.
“I’m sorry. Really, I am,” the blonde woman spat, prying her kid off. She didn’t seem upset at all, more like annoyed. “But I gotta go.”
“Mommy, please. Don’t leave me!”
Without another word, the blonde skittered out the door. The child crumpled into a heap of agony.
Giving each other uncertain looks, none of the other women moved.
Before I could stop myself, I was out of my cot and had my arms wrapped around her.
“I want my mommy!” she bellowed, choking on her words and nearly hyperventilating. She buried her face into my chest. “I want my mommy. Mommy! Come back!”
I knew this feeling. I’d said those words.
I had screamed for hours for my mother. Vira, the woman from the restaurant, had taken me from my family and after I’d “misbehaved,” she’d locked me in a closet for three days before opening it to give me some stale bread and a glass of water. By then, starved and thirsty, I would have eaten anything.
In those days, I’d sobbed for Mama just like this.
The memory was suddenly so vivid. I was reliving it right along with the little girl in my arms.
She felt so heavy.
I held her until she passed out, both of us full of remembering and feeling. The weight was unbearable. Her sobs echoed in my ears like thunder claps.
Most of you know of my addiction to zombies! I can’t resist when I spot a new story.
And I just fell in love with the cover art for Transport.
When I discovered the author was from Michigan, that sealed the deal. I was born there and wouldn’t mind revisiting, zombies and all.
Author Peter Welmerink has put together a really fun Top Tens List.
Take your time, browse the post, and check out the awesome illustrations!
Peter Welmerink’s
Top Ten Things You SHOULDN’T Do
When the Zombie Apocalypse Happens
(In the World of TRANSPORT)
  1. Stand in front of oncoming military vehicles, which are there to protect and assist you, to protest their presence. Plus, they might not stop and, if you are unfortunate enough to be standing before the HURON, 72 tons of armored vehicle will reduce your waist line to, ummmm, about a millimeter or so.
  1. Wear a dress, pants, shirt, or undergarments made of raw meat, even if you are a big fan of Lady Gaga.
  1. Ingest a lot of beans the night before, and then try and sneak through a quiet, zombie-infested, poorly-soundproofed auditorium the next day. Okay, one of my kids came up with this one. Still, sounds like something NOT to do.
  1. Move out to the country. You will eventually either get attacked, or someone will “crop dust” your homestead with flesh-eating chemicals, reducing you and the undead into piles of red goo.
  1. Run out to the big university communal. There might not be zombies within its walled confines, but the crazed geneticists inside may want to combine your biological essence with a dead cat or mutated bull. Unless you’re into that sort of thing.
  1. Use “weapons” which shoot foam bullets. Nerf guns are fun to shoot and play with, but not recommended for use in repelling actual undead.
transport jpeg ForFUOnlyKnew
  1. Buy a house on Grand Rapids west side. It becomes an enclosed retention area for the city’s undead populace once the outbreak is in full bloom.
  1. Use any type of two-wheel or four-wheel vehicle to drive over and through a pile of zombies. Tires will spin on the gore-slop, unless you can totally floor it and run your rubber right down to pavement before being overwhelmed by flesh-biters. Try to spray a crimson rooster only if you have the horsepower and ample time for such shenanigans.
  1. Have a staring contest with a local Grand Rapids undead civilian. You’ll lose. They either don’t blink or do not have eyes to stare into. And the idea is just insane anyway. If you are silly enough to do such a thing, try it on a Feral zomb. You’ll still lose… along with your face, neck, appendages and, most likely, your life. Okay, one of my kids came up with this one too.
  1. Die, or become infected and die. The name of the game is live and survive, or, if not, make sure you go out with a big enough BANG to put yourself into some type of subatomic form.
Book Synopsis for Transport
The HURON, a 72-ton heavy transport vehicle and an army of four; tracked, racked and ready to roll, to serve and protect the walled metropolis of Grand Rapids—both her living and her undead. Captain Jacob Billet and his crew patrol the byways, ready for trouble.
TRANSPORT_1_machine gunner
William Lettner, the North Shore Coalition High Commissioner, has enemies from the mainland to the lakeshore and needs to be covertly transported home after his helicopter is shot down en route to Grand Rapids. He has no love for a city that gives unliving civilians the right to survive. Lettner’s venomous outbursts assaults Billet and his crew along every mile travelled as they are assigned to safely bring him through the treacherous landscape outside the city back to his hometown.
TRANSPORT_2_monster
The HURON and her crew will have to face domesticated zombies and the feral undead; marauders holding strategic chokepoints hostage; barricaded villages fighting for survival, and a group of geneticists who’ve lost control of one of their monstrous experiments if they want to complete their mission.
The crew will need to stay strong and trust one another in order to finish the mission and bring their “precious” cargo home, even knowing, all the while, the terrible deeds Lettner has done.
Travelling through West Michigan was never so dangerous.
MY REVIEW
The book description alone made me want to read this book.
In the beginning, there were a lot of clichés and I was thinking, “Uh oh.” I was worried they would become annoying and slow down my reading. I was worried I wouldn’t like this book. But, I kept going. And kept going…..And before I knew it, I couldn’t put it down.
I tried explaining my confusion to my sister. How I thought I might not like the book, was worried because the author was from Wales and the wording was different. How I didn’t get all of the expressions, even taking them in context.
Then it hit me. It didn’t matter. I was hooked and having a great time.
Matt believes he’s unlucky. Accept for surviving the car crash and subsequent severe head injury.
Going from a med school student to a porter at the hospital isn’t lucky. Nor is being the verbal punching bag for a malicious doctor.
Matt’s psychologist says working will help. Help him accept there was no girlfriend in the car with him when it crashed. She didn’t exist.
So Matt goes to work, suffering the mental assault of the doc, and slowly beginning to think maybe he did make up his girlfriend. It wasn’t all bad.  Sure, he’d become a clutz, but he was alive.
Then, one night at work, she walked up to him and planted a big kiss on his mouth. Silvy, his missing girlfriend. The one who didn’t exist.
If he didn’t make her up, maybe other things he’s been remembering are real too. And it’s not long before he finds out they are and things go from unbelievable to out-and-out weird.
Since I’ve never read anything like this before, there’s nothing to compare it to. I’ve been very lucky and found something unique, something different.
With everything that was happening to Matt, I was reminded of a four-way traffic stop. You all get there at the same time and nobody moves. So you decide to go and as soon as you hit the gas, so does someone else. Now you both stop and wave at each other to go. Again, you hesitate, until finally you think the heck with this and hit the gas pedal and go.
Matt handled things pretty much the same way. He kept moving forward, hoping his luck wouldn’t run out.
At one point I found myself chuckling and I had to go back a few sentences to find out why. Things like this little excerpt are dropped like little bombs all through the story, catching you unawares.
” Matt thought for a moment.It only hurt a little.”
Those ten words were just dropped in the paragraph and my subconscious caught on before I did.
It’s a mad, mad, mad, mad, world in  The 400 lb Gorilla.
To use a cliché, “A diamond in the rough!”
Oh yeah. The author has a part in the story. Not as a character though. It’ll cost you ‘Two and a half scruples from Wellworths.’
400LB Teaser4
Synopsis
Matt Danmor thinks he’s lucky. Not many people survive a near death accident with nothing more than a bout of amnesia, a touch of clumsiness and the conviction that the technician who did the MRI had grey skin and hooves. Still, it takes time to recover from trauma like that, especially when the girl who was in the accident with you disappears into thin air. Especially when the shrinks keep telling you she’s just a figment of your imagination. So when the girl turns up months later looking ravishing, and wanting to carry on where they left off, Matt’s troubled life starts looking up. But he hasn’t bargained for the baggage that comes with Silvy, like the fact she isn’t really an English language student, or even a girl. Underneath her traffic stopping exterior is something else altogether, something involving raving fanatics bent on human sacrifice, dimensionally challenged baked bean tins, a vulture with a penchant for profanity, and a security agent for the Dept of Fimmigration (that’s Fae immigration for those of you not in the know) called Kylah with the most amazing gold-flecked eyes The 400 Lb Gorilla is caustic, (vampire-free) introduction to the Hipposync Archives: Contemporary fantasy at its sparkling best.
Author DC Farmer
the 400 lb gorilla author
Once a successful doctor of medicine, DC Farmer now works two days a week for the NHS and, thanks to the wonders of Krudian physics, the other nine days a 011-Dyl-011week for Hipposync Enterprises, as a scribe.
Hipposync was established in the early fourteenth century as a purveyor and publisher of rare books, the sort of stuff you are not able to get elsewhere and which contains information as varied as how to guard your castle against the Hordes of Maltasub using Harpie blood and tar, and how to change a beetle into a useful toothpick.
Of course, you will have gathered from all of this that Hipposync is, in fact, just a cover. What lurks beneath that thin veneer of respectability (yeah, right) is much, much more interesting. Hiding behind an office on the banks of the canal in Jericho, Oxford is the Department of Fimmigration (as in Fae immigration). Hey, there has to be one, otherwise just anyone could walk in, right?
DC’s role in documenting the work of the Fimmigration Service has, over the years, led to the realization that the world needs to know. Moreover, if he doesn’t tell someone soon he is going to burst. So, within these pages you will find actual accounts of the splendid work of the Fimmigration Service, beginning with The 400 Lb Gorilla–a sample of which is also on this site, and which will soon be published in its totality by Spence City once appropriate clearance from the ‘authorities’ has been obtained.
Some people say that this is contemporary fantasy fiction. Believe me, it’s real enough on planet hipposync.
DC Farmer is alive and well in darkest West Wales.
