Dog Toys

Age Level – 3 – 13

My Review

Dog Toys isn’t just the title of the book, it’s also the name of the star character. Dog Toys is a good dog. He enjoys living with Andrew and playing with his toys. But there are no dogs in his neighborhood. Now he and Andrew are going to the beach. Will he meet other dogs? Will they play with him? He can’t wait to get out in the world and see for himself.

This was such a cute and fast read. Each page is a full color illustration. I really enjoyed how the author told the story along with showed it. And there’s many things to spot on each page. Dog Toys shares about what he sees and smells. I always wondered what my dog was thinking when he ran around, stopping to smell things, and what he might be seeing when he hung his head out of the car window. Makes me want to pack us up in the car and head to the beach.

This is one I recommend to dog lover’s of all ages. Dog Toys is a delight and so are the lessons learned and colorful illustrations.

One To Ten: Squirrel’s Bad Day

by Carole P. Roman

Illustrated by Mateya Arkova

Genre: Children’s Book

Grade Level – K – 4

Age Level – 4 – 8

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

Poor squirrel tripped and lost all of her acorns. Her forest friends help her see that it might not as bad as she thinks.

I’ve had lots of days like Squirrel’s. Things don’t go according to plan and I let it ruin my whole day. I remember my mother saying to count to ten and calm down, things weren’t as bad as I thought they were. I thought it was clever and fun to see Squirrel’s friends make a game of it and give examples of their bad days and how they rated from 1 to 10 how bad they were or weren’t. And each example has some fun, colorful illustrations.

I think this is a good teaching tool along with a fun adventure. Children will learn about counting, coping, and have fun looking at the pretty pictures.

Synopsis

Squirrel is rushing along a tree limb when she trips, losing all her acorns into the rushing water of the river below. Angry and frustrated, she doesn’t know what to do. Her good friend, Rabbit, lends both a sympathetic ear as well as a solution. Rather than get angry, Rabbit tells her, rate the problem on a scale of one-to-ten. By identifying and realizing the true importance of the issue, the issue may not seem so overwhelming. Adorable forest creatures help the sad squirrel put everything into perspective so he does not to get stuck in a rut over something that may not be a big deal after all.

Don’t Ever Look Behind Door 32

by B.C.R. Fegan

Illustrated by Lenny Wen

Genre: Children’s Book

Grade level K – 3

Age Level – 3 – 8

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

As soon as you open the book, you’re greeted by the friendly yet mysterious Mr. Nicholas Noo, who invites you to tour his magical Hotel of Hoo. As his very first guests, he’s eager to share the surprises hidden by each door of the haunted mansion. His only condition, don’t ever look behind door 32.

Young ones will be eager to see what each door reveals. They’ll meet dancing zombies, miniature giants, baby wizards, unusual pets and so many more delightful and sometimes frightful beings. Fegan’s rhyming prose makes this one you’ll want to read aloud as narrator Lenny Wen bedazzles you with his vivid and colorful illustrations.

The suspense builds as you’re frequently reminded not to open door number 32. What ever could it be hiding? Nope, not gonna tell ya.

I found this book a delightful adventure. I have the hardcover edition and got the full benefit of the fabulous illustrations and couldn’t wait to find out if anyone peaked behind door 32.

You’ll want to keep this close at hand as I’m sure it will become a family favorite to read over and over again.

About Author B.C.R. Fegan

B.C.R. Fegan

BCR Fegan is an award-winning author who has written a number of fairy tales and fantasies for children and young adults.

Raised on a small hobby farm only minutes from some of Australia’s greatest beaches, Fegan grew up inspired by the power of natures ambience. From the intensity of the frequent summer storms, to the overwhelming serenity of a lonely beach in the early hours of the morning. His ravenous appetite for both reading and writing soon saw him drawing on the transformational influence of the world around him to craft short stories, poems and picture books.

As time wore on, Fegan also found inspiration in the magic and depth of authors and compositors like Hans Christian Andersen, the Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault. He was mesmerised by the potency of small but beautiful phrases that were carefully carved from the minds of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Robert Frost. He grew to appreciate the worlds meticulously created by David Eddings, JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis.

Eventually, he began to forge his own complete works. Weaving his own magic, piecing together his own phrases and crafting his own worlds. Agonising over plots that would inspire, characters that would be loved and circumstances that would delight. In time, his efforts saw a number of children’s books and young adult fiction produced. Through the efforts of TaleBlade Press, these works are now being published with that same careful dedication.

The Boy Who Swallows Flies
Michael F. Stewart
Publication date: February 15th 2018
Genres: Middle-Grade, Mystery, Superhero

Winner of the Claymore Award!

Warning – Rated Kids-Only for Bug Violence

Jarrod can view the memories of any bug. He just has to eat it. It’s not the tastiest of superpowers and, let’s face it, fly memories aren’t all unicorns and rainbows. Eating insects also doesn’t net him many friends, and Bug-boy is an unavoidable nickname. But Jarrod’s ready to prove that he and his bugs are worth more than ridicule.

When he swallows a fly while biking, he’s in for a shock. The bug saw a room stacked full of sick dogs and puppies in crates. It’s a puppy mill, and Jarrod needs to save the animals. But the flight range of the common housefly is five miles. Even if the police believed him, with no evidence, they can’t help. It’s up to Jarrod.

Trained cockroaches survey neighborhood basements. A fly taped to a window makes an excellent sentry. Every beetle, mosquito, caterpillar—don’t eat the fuzzy yellow ones—spider and centipede is his edible sidekick.

Will Jarrod save the dogs? Or is it all too much to swallow?

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo

My Review

I had a feeling this would be a hoot to read and the author didn’t let me down.

Jarrod has a condition where he faints for no reason. That’s why he wears a helmet to protect his head.  It paints a huge target on him at school and the bullies don’t miss a chance to pick on the Bug Boy. He’s been called weird and dumb often enough  he’s come to believe it. But his best friend tells him he just hadn’t tapped into his potential yet. When he accidentally swallows a bug and can see it’s memories, he thinks he just might have found it.

No. Just no. There’s no way I could eat a bug on purpose.  Jarrod gets creative, I’ll give him that. And he keeps a bucket handy in case what goes down comes back up.  And letting the bugs out to crawl all over him in his bed. Just thinking about it gives me the shivers.

Jerrod’s new found talent sets him on a course of discovery. There’s some moral issues involved and he’s tempted by others. He may believe he’s not the smartest of kids, but I sure liked how he worked things out.

An unlikely hero with some unusual sidekicks. It’s creepy crawly fun.

If You Were Me And Lived In…

The Mayan Empire

by Carole P. Roman

35040713

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Education / Adventure / Historical / Children’s Book

Age Level: 10 – 14

 My Review

I’ve read several books in Carole’s series and enjoyed them very much. I’d say this is my favorite so far.

I’ve always had a fascination with the Mayan society. What you’ll read here is fascinating stuff. How did they live? What was their society like? How did they construct their pyramids? So many more questions and so many more answers abound.

Among their many contributions is the concept or zero. Of something being nothing. They mapped the skies with telescopes. They even performed brain surgery. This is just of few of their contributions. A funny things is, despite all of this, they never discovered the use of the wheel. I thought that was so odd. All that knowledge and they missed the wheel. Now I wonder how did they build their cities and pyramids.

Learn about famous Mayans and more with the wonderful glossary provided at the back of the book. I found it handy and fun to be able to correctly pronounce words and get a better grasp of what they meant. I was thrilled by the wealth of information gleaned from these pages.

Welcome to Carole’s Mayan Empire. Read about many amazing things and let your eyes wander over the colorful illustrations. Have fun and learn.

The Adventures of Mitee Mite Series
Author: David John
Publisher: Mitee Mite
Pages: 120 pages total in series
Genre: Children’s Picture Book
.

My Review

This is a set of five books teaching children about measuring, recognizing shapes, counting money, and learning to tell time, with the fifth book being an advanced book about time. Each page has a question and when you turn the page the answer is provided. And the pages are filled with brightly colored illustrations to add to the fun while learning.

I was surprised by how many questions I got wrong. Especially with measuring. My son, who is now grown, also had trouble with some of the questions. Do you know how many feet are in a mile? How about how many sides does a pentagon have? We went through all five books, having a good time and laughing at some of the fun pictures. If we had this much fun, imagine how much fun your little ones will have.

Parents and teachers will find these to be handy educational tools and the young ones will have so much fun they’ll forget they’re learning.

And Mitee Mite gives back. Each time a book is sold, one is given away and donations are made to teachers and children in need from book sale proceeds.

Description

Building on a desire to teach children about time, shapes, measurements, and money, author David John created THE ADVENTURES OF MITEE MITE series. In the same way that many of us learned our ABCs, the book and app (available on Google Play and iTunes) collection helps young readers learn how many seconds are in a minute, the number of sides different shapes contain, and more, using a catchy tune that captures their attention and motivates learning.
Focusing on children from age 3 to 11 years old, THE ADVENTURES OF MITEE MITE book and app series offers its readers a dynamic female superhero, Mitee Mite, as their guide through the often tricky terrain involved with mastering time, shapes, measurements, and money. In her matching red cape and boots, Mitee Mite, accompanied by her alarm clock sidekick, Terry the Ticker, activates her superpowers by using her manners, respecting others, and accurately answering questions in the games she encounters during her adventures.
The five books in THE ADVENTURES OF MITEE MITE book and app series include The Time Frame Game and The Time Frame Game Advanced, which break down seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, and years to teach readers the fundamentals of time. The Measuring Game explores the components of feet, yards, and miles, as well as cups, pints, quarts, and gallons. Mitee Mite teaches kids about currency in The Money Game and dives into a colorful world of triangles, squares, hexagons, and more in The Shape Game. The companion song for this series (available at www.miteemite.com) helps kinds absorb the skills in an enjoyable and interactive way.
The idea for THE ADVENTURES OF MITEE MITE book and app series came about when David was faced with a dire challenge. “One day as I was babysitting my friends’ children, and not having any idea what to do, I made up fun games to help them learn,” David revealed. The goal of the series is to expose children to a variety of lessons in a manner that is fun, relatable, and memorable. David says, “Mitee Mite was created to help give children a head start on the basics of time, measurements, shapes, and money.”
David’s daughter, whom he calls his “Little Mite,” is the inspiration for the main character and the themes of the series. David’s desire to teach his daughter the basic skills featured in THE ADVENTURES OF MITEE MITE book and app series has expanded into the goal of sharing these lessons with other children through his “You Buy, They Read” program. “We plan to give away one book for every one bought to kids in need.” In addition, David will donate $1 for every $2 of the gross sales of apps to teachers “who are going into their own pockets to buy supplies.”

Renaissance Italy

by Carole P. Roman

Genre: Education / Adventure / Historical / Children’s Book

Grade Level: 5 – 14

 My Review

Carole P. Roman once again takes us back in time. This stop, Renaissance Italy.

You’ll learn all about some of the famous people and artists of the times like Leonardo Da Vinci, Galileo Galalei, Michelangelo and many more. And the wonderful illustrations show you how people lived, what they wore and what they celebrated, among other things. And the glossary provided at the end of the book proves quite handy.

I particularly liked learning about what the people ate, and how the practice of art evolved. And I always wondered how they cleaned their clothes. They didn’t have washing machines. What I discovered was fascinating.

Just like the other books I’ve read in this series, I learned a lot and your children will too. This book is a wonderful teaching tool and also a grand adventure.

You might have lived in a home like this, called a palazzo. This was fun to learn as I’d seen homes like these in many movies but never knew they had a name for the style.

The Tannenbaum Tailors and the Secret Snowball

by JB Michaels

27877098

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Holiday / Adventure / Children’s Book

My Review

Strap yourself in. It’s going to be a bumpy ride aboard the Icicle ship. Will Captain Brendan and the Tannenbaum Tailors be able to save Christmas from the Spiritless Elves?

Wouldn’t it be super if these wee folks were real? Imagine tiny elves scampering on your Christmas tree, making sure there’s no faulty wiring that will cause a fire and polishing the bulbs to make it merry and bright.

And with any good adventure, there’s usually a bad guy or two. The Spiritless elves try to ruin the festivities and that’s where the action really begins.

This was such a fun, action packed adventure and a whole new look at Christmas. I’d say it’s aimed at middle grade readers but don’t let that stop you mature readers from jumping in. I think you’ll find this joining your holiday reading list.

Synopsis

They are the Tannenbaum Tailors: elves charged with maintaining Christmas trees in homes around the world. Without the Tailors’ efforts, families might lose their Christmas spirit. And this year, one team of Tailors will be tested like never before.

With the North Pole itself under attack, newly promoted Captain Brendan is assigned a special mission: conceal the source of Santa’s power within a Christmas tree in Chicago. On Christmas Eve, Santa will pick it up.

The job would be simple, but the Tailors find themselves facing a serious threat””the thieving Spiritless elves, already responsible for sabotaging the North Pole Home Tree, will do anything to gain control of the very thing that makes Christmas possible.

Equally bad, Christmas spirit is at an all-time low in the Chicago home where Brendan’s assigned.

The family’s mother even wants to take the tree down before Christmas Eve! To save Christmas, Captain Brendan and his Tailors will have to use every spirit-raising trick they know””and possibly even bend a few rules to pull it off.

Combining holiday cheer with action and thrills,

The Tannenbaum Tailors and the Secret Snowball reads like Raiders of the Lost Ark in a Christmas tree.

If You Were Me And Lived In…

Elizabethan England

by Carole P. Roman

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Education / Adventure / Children’s Book

Grade Level: 3 – 9

 My Review

Ever wondered what it would be like to live during the Elizabethan era? The author spins the time travel dial and you are there. Walking among queens and kings, merchants and explorers. Those with money and those with less eat different foods, wear different clothes, but all follow the same religion, the one practiced by the royals.

A non fiction tale told from the view point of a child living in London during the 1600s, the author did her research. While this book is directed towards a young reading audience, I learned a lot, and your child will have fun while learning too.

And I thought it was a wonderful idea for the author to provide a glossary at the end of the book to help with word pronunciation and understanding their meaning, along with a list of renowned people from the era.

I read and enjoyed another book in this series, The American West, and I’m thrilled that the author included fun little facts you wouldn’t normally think about in this book also. Highly recommend this one too.

The American West

by Carole P. Roman

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Education / Adventure / Children’s Book

Grade Level: 3 – 9

 My Review

Learn how it was to join the Wagon Train of 1843. What was it like to load everything you own into one wagon and travel west across the country, braving the elements and hidden dangers? What would you do for food and clothing? What did you do for shelter once you arrived at your chosen destination? Life is different, with many new customs, and there’s much to be done to settle into your new life.

There’s so many interesting details shared about settling in the Old West. Many I never even thought about before. With beautiful illustrations by Paula Tabor, and informative discussions on such things as building homes, clothing, names of the times and daily living, Carol captures the image of the American West.

At the end of the book, the author shares about famous people from these times and includes a glossary of words that explain meaning and pronunciations.

Young readers will find this to be a fascinating and fun trip back in time to see how it was done in the American West.

Unusual Animals A – Z

by Heather Jones

Illustrated by Soraya Edmunds

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Adventure / Children’s Book

 My Review

Have you ever heard of a Sun Bear? How about a Jabiru Stork? Did you know a Crawdad swims backwards?  Heather Jones shares fun facts about unusual animals in her charming book Unusual Animals A – Z.

I remember spending so many happy times reading to and with my son. He’s now all grown up but that didn’t stop him from reading this with me. We had lots of fun discussions about the animals featured in this book and went on to talk about some others.

No matter the age of your kids, they’ll enjoy this delightful book and have fun while learning all about the animals. I’m an adult and even I learned something new.  My edition is a large hardcover copy. Your children can easily hold it on their lap to turn the pages. And the illustrations are cute and colorful.

There’s a section the author includes at the back of book. Each animal is featured in alphabetical order with a picture asking your child to give the animal a name that starts with that letter. I had fun coming up with quirky names and I bet your child will too.

You’ll want to keep this one close by as it will become a family favorite.

Synopsis

Award winning Unusual Animals A-Z is quirky, imaginative, educational and just plain fun. Whether it’s Andre the aardvark or Zena the zorilla, each of these twenty-six unusual animals is introduced to the reader with a colorful watercolor painting and a factual characteristic. While Bernie the bearded dragon likes to bask in the sun, Morris the manatee uses his small front flippers and massive body to body surf through the waves. Each animal has the same lettered name and when the reader reaches the end, he has twenty-six chances to come up with one of his own.
