Novice Necromancer

Northern Necromancers: The Island Book 1

by Amy B. Nixon

Genre: Romantic Dark Fantasy

Novice Necromancer is a revised edition of my discontinued book Nordstrøm Necromancer. It includes new content, sprinkled throughout the story.

Intrigue, monsters and a forbidden affair. What could go wrong?

Learyn Dustrikke didn’t believe in black magic, until her aunt’s secrets forced her to flee San Francisco and seek shelter on the ominous Nordstrøm Island – an obscure Norwegian holm uprooted from the realm Vanaheim.

Ensnared by the island’s magic, Learyn finds herself in deadlier peril than ever before.

Between juggling the principles of necromancy, waltzing with intrigue and monsters, and falling for a man whose love is forbidden by the gods, can Learyn untangle the web of family secrets before it’s too late? Or will the threat she fled from catch up with her?

Hop on a ride to cinematic lands of atavistic Norse mythology in this NA Dark Fantasy series, as Learyn learns why black magic should not be taken lightly.

(Disclaimer: Every book in the series contains swearing, deaths and occasional gore. The main characters are also featured in my other series Northern Necromancers: The Dragons.)

The excerpt features one profanity, but if you prefer to spare some language-sensitive bloggers, you can stylize it as “f-ck” (I did the same on Amazon to bypass Author Central’s restrictions, so I’m totally fine with that if you have to censor it). I also left line breaks above and below the paragraphs in Italics since they’re a scene during which the character has a vision of the future, and the Italics/ line breaks would make it less confusing for the bloggers.

“Miss Dustrikke, I’d like a word with you.”

Confused by his request, I waited for everyone to leave before I stepped onto the raised podium.

He studied me from head to toe with that pair of unnaturally light blue irises. Cold and intrusive, like an avalanche sliding across every inch of me. Hoar-frost scalded my guts. My heart dropped in my stomach with the weight of a glacier. Why did he always look so freakishly intimidating?

When his icy blues finally trailed back up, I barely prevented myself from squirming. And then the world unraveled around me.

I was standing in what was supposed to be a spacious hall, or at least it had been once before.

Erosion had struck the stony walls, demolishing them to nothing more than crumbled ruins. They laid bleak and barren in hues of fading grays. Jagged outlines of damaged columns spanned up to an open sky, devoid of stars. A pale crescent moon barely illuminated its onyx darkness, shedding light on a thinning haze.

My eyes darted down as I stepped onto something hard and uneven — a serrated piece, chipped off the marbled tiles. Disarrayed, aegean patterns covered the icy floor, like protrusive veins running under pale skin. Shudders slithered up my spine at the sight of hollow trunks and tarred roots, mere footsteps from where I stood. Those trees were dead. They shouldn’t have been able to break through the stone.

I navigated my way across the ruins carefully, diving deeper into the remains of a dead world.

Until it wasn’t dead anymore.

Eerie tones flew past my ears. A haunting rock ballad, coming from somewhere ahead. I braved the freezing temperatures and kept walking. A man and a woman, locked in a tight embrace, appeared out of the blue and spun around me. I barely caught a glimpse of their formal clothes before they disappeared. Just as I wondered if they had been some crazy mirage, another couple broke through the haze.

More and more people manifested before my shocked stare, all of whom were waltzing. Trying to tell mirages from reality, my eyes lingered on the formal suits and puffy dresses. Torn and battered, they revealed naked flesh. Rotten, flaky, decomposing flesh.

A horrified gasp ruptured my throat. The cloud of somber mist lured out my breath, robbing me of my fleeting warmth. A sinister thought rushed through my mind — the haze was sucking away my life, like it had sucked away theirs.

I panted, writhing like an aspen twig.

The haze had disappeared, as had the ruins and the waltzing corpses. I was standing back on that podium, facing Dann’s creepily intense stare.

“What the fuck was that?” I whispered, still trembling from the lingering aftertaste of what I had just experienced.

“What was what, exactly?”

“That! The ruins, corpses, music and… everything!”

His face hardened in an obscure grimace.

“You were there!” I pressed when he didn’t say anything. “You were there with me all the time!”

“I never stood from my chair, Miss Dustrikke, and you never left this room.”

My mouth fell open. I peeked over my shoulder to see nothing more than rows of tables and empty chairs, stacked neatly in their ascending formation. I could swear on the creator of the Python programming language, moments ago we had both been in that dreadful, gothic, post-apocalyptic excuse of a ruined hall.

Tearing my gaze off the empty room, I faced his stone-cold features.

Incorporeal blades raked through my spine while the waltzing corpses still glided through my head, possessing my thoughts with images of their rotten, festering flesh. Between the livid skin and the soul-sucking haze, his familiar presence had felt like the only factor that had prevented me from losing myself to the cold, ghastly darkness. Which was a paradox on its own, considering I didn’t even know him well, least of all trust him.

Still, why was he pretending nothing had happened?

“We both walked through those ruins.” Treacherous notes of desperation bled from my shaky voice. “You were right behind me.”

“As I said, neither of us left the room.”

So, I’d had… a hallucination, or something? A vision? Was it even possible? Did necromancers have visions? Omens? Predictions about the future? Past lives? What the hell was going on?

Rampant Necromancer

Northern Necromancers: The Island Book 2

My life got freakier than a black metal music video. Ironic, since my blood runs with black magic.

Newbie necromancer Learyn Dustrikke quickly learned why leaving San Francisco and moving to a chunk of Vanaheim land nestled in Norway was a bad idea.

Nordstrøm Island is anything but the fairytale land she thought it would be. Murderers run rampant in broad daylight. Freshly deceased human flesh rots before her eyes. Wrongfully cast spells serve as a one-way ticket to a soulless eternity. And sneaking out means getting exposed to lethal forces, which are impervious even to necromancy.

The last things on Learyn’s mind are worrying about Dann’s eerie secrets or the furtive warnings of a mysterious dark elf. But in a world where reality is more terrifying than any nightmare, seeking love and friendship will cost her more than she’s prepared to lose.

And that’s just the calm before the storm…

Hop on a ride to mythical lands of ancient Norse mythology in this NA Dark Fantasy series, as Learyn learns why black magic should not be taken lightly.

(Disclaimer: Every book in the series contains swearing, deaths and occasional gore. You’ll also see some characters and events from my series Northern Necromancers: The Dragons.)

Amden Bog
A Novel in Stories
by David Rose
Genre: Dark Fantasy
The second book to expose the grim world of Mulgara:
Loner, bumpkin, self-destructive teenager, Matina thought her life’s adventures would reach no further than paddling under night cypress or falling through the parchment of a good book. But she owns a great secret, one coming with her approaching womanhood like the mouths of gnashing teeth.
Boraor Rehton, the inept shaman, would love nothing more than to leave this wretched town, continuously appointing him their spiritual leader. He knows little about the earthly arts, but the same cannot be said for black magic; tools he uses, which, if caught, would earn him a place on Amden’s impaling stakes.
Add Pauthor Quithot, recluse, Grubilius Motty, lowlife drunkard, and other malcontents all involved with a mysterious force let loose upon the bog.As the force’s mystery wanes, old feuds are inflamed, murder is ready to run rampant, and the threshold separating the living from the dead is hopped over with wicked glee.
Alluring, unpredictable, dripping with idiosyncratic folk, AMDEN BOG is dark fantasy where beauty and brutality often hang from the same sagging vine.

Revenge of the Vampir King
Thrones of Blood Book 1
by Nancy Kilpatrick
Genre: Adult Dark Fantasy, Paranormal Romance

Vampires and humans are at war!
Moarte, King of the Vampirii, is a prisoner of his Sapiens enemy. The
beautiful Sapiens Princess Valada, believing that Moarte killed her
mother, tortures him, even to the point of breaking the bones in his
wings so he cannot escape. She intends to incinerate him to ash in
sunlight, but Moarte escapes.
Moarte hungers for revenge. When, through an act of betrayal, Valada is
captured by the vampirii, his first instinct is to drain her blood
and annihilate her. But he realizes he can get revenge in other ways,
using her as a tool to gain the upper hand in this conflict. But who
is manipulating whom? Both want revenge, and control of the other,
and Moarte wants to drink Valada’s blood. Dark desires lead down a
path neither had envisioned, a threatening spiral that can destroy
empires.
Hunter and hunted change places again and again in this novel of twisted,
violent passions. Seeds of deception are sown amidst love and hate,
loyalty and betrayal, obsession and indifference, in an erotic tale
of warring races, foes since the beginning of time, and two unlikely
adversaries aligning to battle a common enemy.
Nancy Kilpatrick infuses her vampires with the hot blood of life and erotic
passion. Vampires have never had it so good.”
F. Paul Wilson
Author of the Repairman Jack series, The Keep, Midnight Mass
“Kilpatrick knows that great secret of horror stories: that they are intensely personal!”
-Chelsea Quinn Yarbro Author of The Saint Germain series
“Nancy Kilpatrick’s writing is both eloquent and erotic her stories seduce
the reader through the mutual attraction of dread and desire.”
Stephen Jones
Editor: Dark Terrors; Best New Horror series

Sacrifice of the Hybrid Princess
Thrones of Blood Book 2

Part human, part vampir, the beautiful, stubborn, angry young Princess
Serene is a tormented hybrid, her days and nights controlled by her
overprotective parents. When they suddenly insist on an arranged
marriage, visions of a grim future in a loveless pairing with the
cold and dominating Wolfsbane drive Princess Serene into a desperate escape.
But instead of freedom, the young naive Princess rushes headlong into the
clutches of a human demon whose cruelty and violence threaten to
destroy her and her world. The entire vampirii nation is helpless to
rescue her, and war becomes a certainty. Rebellion will lead to many
deaths, including those she loves. But to endure brutality until she
can escape might be beyond her abilities.
Ultimately, Wolfsbane, her detested bridegroom, is the one holding the key to
save her, if he can. And more, can she
be saved?
***
“Nancy Kilpatrick inhabits that shadow land of sensuality between terror and
pleasure; she can be creepy, seductive, bleak, exquisite and
terrifying—often all at once. She knows the intricacies of human
minds and bodies at war with themselves, and her stories bring you
into those battles in ways that make you think you’ve actually been
there because maybe you have.”
Thomas Roche, author of The Panama Laugh and editor of the Noirotica series
“Nancy Kilpatrick’s vampires have a distinctive bite all their own.”
Nancy A. Collins, author of Sunglasses After Dark and In the Blood
“Kilpatrick is the pony express of horror. She’s fast and furious and she always delivers.”
Brian Lumley, author of the Necroscope series
I loved Book 1 but I will admit that I loved Book 2 even more. The
characters were comfortably familiar but the threat level has been
escalated to nail-biting proportions. I devoured the book quickly; it
was difficult to put down, but I am used to this when in the hands of
a skilled author like Kilpatrick. She truly is a “vampire queen”:
a real specialist at telling vampire tales in new and engaging ways.”
Elaine Pascal, reviewer
The Horror Review

Abduction of Two Rulers
Thrones of Blood Book 3

A conference between two species ends in disaster when Sapiens Queen
Blanka and the Vampir King Thanatos are treacherously seized and
imprisoned in a dungeon. War erupts as their jailers—an ancient
vampir and a traitorous Sapiens usurper—each plot to reign over all
of their own species. Desperate to end the conflict, the two
prisoners escape. En route to his stronghold, Thanatos disappears.
His vampir allies want to find him, but attack is imminent, making
defense the priority. Blanka knows the odds are against her surviving
an all-powerful, ancient being whose goal is destruction yet she is
determined to rescue Thanatos. The question that tortures her is:
does he still exist?

“Nancy Kilpatrick is an audacious and insane writer of vampire fiction. I
wish a vamp would bite me so I could read her work forever!” –
Nancy Holder, NYT Bestselling Author, Mary Shelley Presents; Buffy
the Vampire Slayer novels
“Sit back and let Nancy Kilpatrick guide you through this tortured world
of sex and passion, hunger and blood, damned souls and velvet
nights.” – Karen E. Taylor, author The Vampire Legacy series
“Horror has never been so poetically exquisite before: move over Anne Rice
for Nancy Kilpatrick.” – Robert W. Walker, author of Instinct series books

Savagery of the Rebel King
Thrones of Blood Book 4

Necros, the most rebellious of the vampir kings, has carried a burning hatred
for the one who forced him into this undead existence centuries ago.
Abused, betrayed, cheated, he trusts none of any species, especially
Guin, a dethroned mortal queen who appears out of nowhere and feeds
his paranoia, and his darkest fantasies. At best she attempts to
control him, at worst she tries to kill him. For some reason he does
not understand, Necros is compelled to let her live. But he believes
she is manipulative, and a liar; Guin sees him as brutal, stubborn,
impossible! Encounters turn ugly as violence, bitterness and haunting
memories drive both of them. Guin has her own agendas, and the more
she struggles to actualize them, the further away her goals recede. A
few vampirii endeavor to build a bridge between the two combatants,
but others with sinister plans are bent on hindering a truce. This
downward-spiralling dynamic reels towards a dire conclusion that
neither Necros nor Guin seem able to halt.
Savagery of the Rebel King—Vol 4 in the exciting Thrones of Blood series—is
a fast-paced rollercoaster ride in a plot that twists and turns and
threatens to spin out of control. Readers will be glued to their seats!

My Review

I’ve been loving these characters since the very beginning of the series and this one is particularly bittersweet as it is the last book. I’ve went through so much with them and I expect I’ll be going through some tough times as I get the wrap up.

Petra struggles with what she is or isn’t. What makes her human? Nine has been separated from her pack. Will she rejoin them? Gabe is the last of the Hangmen. What will he be now? Owen is still haunted by a little girl from his past. Will he finally help her find peace? And what is causing the wildfires burning throughout Temperance and will Lascaris rise again to claim their souls?

While the book has a bit of a slow start, I was still held captive. As I mentioned at the start of my review, I’ve loved these characters from the beginning, even that scamp, Sig, Petra’s coyote sidekick. I got all of the answers to questions I’ve had from the start of this series. Some were harrowing. Some were sweet sorrow. And some were happy happy.

And I got a great ending. It was like a hug goodbye.

Synopsis

Laura Bickle, the critically acclaimed author of Nine of Stars and Witch Creek, returns with a fiery new chapter in her celebrated Wildlands series.

In the Yellowstone backcountry, a merciless source of evil carries a torch for the past…

Petra Dee and her immortal husband, Gabe, have been trying to gain a toehold in what passes for ordinary life in Temperance, Wyoming—

a wickedly enchanted land founded generations ago by the alchemist, Lascaris. Petra may be adept when it comes to the uncanny, but as a reasoned geologist, Petra still can’t fathom the wildfires suddenly engulfing Yellowstone National Park, or why Gabe claims to have seen the sky explode in flames. The answers could lie in the past.

It was a dreadful night in 1862 when Lascaris went harvesting for souls, only to be set upon by townsfolk determined to eliminate the root of all evil in a trial by fire. Petra can’t help fearing that Lascaris has crawled out of the ashes of history to wreak vengeance—and to complete his mission by claiming every vulnerable soul in Temperance.

With the help of Gabe and her coyote sidekick, Sig, Petra must now venture into Lascaris’s shadow before he turns her world into an inferno burning out of control.

“Bickle is well on her way to establishing her work as a cornerstone of her genre.”

My Review
.

I usually find that when reading a collection of short stories, some of them are great, some are okay and some miss the mark. I was thrilled to find that I was happy with all sixteen tales in That Which Grows Wild.

The book begins with A Case Study in Natural Selection and How It Applies to Love.  I’m a huge fan of dystopian and apocalyptic tales and this one adds human combustion to the mix. The fact that the author made it seem like something that could actually occur was like sprinkles on an ice cream cone. Tasty.

From there I went on to devour the book. I was expecting to need a break somewhere. For my interest to taper off. But, no. I kept right on to the end, encountering tormented beings, creatures big and small, aliens and ordinary people facing difficult and fantastical situations. But that wasn’t all I found. There were some deeply moving scenes and some characters I wanted to tuck under my wing and keep safe from harm.

I was going to list my favorites but I found myself adding another and then another. The writing is powerful and the stories intoxicating. Eric is a storyteller in the true sense of the word.
