(The Lily Sparrow Chronicles #3)

By Kristee Ravan

Middle-Grade, Fairy Tale, Fantasy
Paperback & ebook, 569 Pages
November 23, 2021 by Kristee Ravan

Lily Sparrow has finally created an equation for being a good princess.
Things are adding up and making sense, and she’s even growing a
measurable amount more excited about her future. But unexpected
variables keep being tossed into her equation:

1. Carole Claus is facing her first hurdle as Santa. She needs Lily’s help.
2. Lily’s Half-Birthday–an important Smythian tradition–is coming up, requiring her to find time to prepare for it.
3. Her algebra teacher has an unusual (and stressful plan) for Lily.
4. Lily remains convinced that her mom is hiding something from her.
5. The investigation into the traitor is an on-going source of stress and tension at work for Lily and Calo.
6. Oh, and Calo’s still betrothed to Su’Sauna, making life difficult and confusing all around.

Will Lily be able to place these variables securely in her equation?
Will the Sparrow family find a way to convince their critics they are
good for the Kingdom? Or will everything fall apart–subtracting all the
good will Lily has already earned from her citizens?

Carole didn’t budge.

“Go on.” Corrie pushed again.

Nothing.

“Carole?” I asked. “What’s going on?”

“You do it, Lily.” Her voice was a whisper.

“Do what?”

“Go talk to him. Feel him out or something.”

“What?!” That eggnog lip gloss was affecting her brain.

“Please.”

“Carole, you’re being crazy right now. What am I going to say to him? I don’t know how to talk to boys.”

“Also,” Eric put in, “I’m not comfortable with the Princess being that far away from me.” He looked through the shelves again. “It’s over thirty feet.”

“Nothing is going to happen, Eric,” I protested.

“Kara gave me specific instructions for these outings. We cannot be sure that—”

“Enough, Eric,” Corrie spoke up. “No one’s going to risk Lily.” She turned to Carole. “It’s a lot. I get it. I’ll go talk to him.”

I looked at Corrie, stunned. She knew how to talk to boys? When did she learn that formula?

“Wait!” Carole grabbed Corrie’s arm just before she stepped into the aisle. “Take this.” She shoved a candy cane into Corrie’s jacket pocket and held up an identical one. “It’s a listening device,” she explained. “So we can hear what he says.”

“Where did you get that?” I asked as we watched Corrie approach Mikey.

Carole shrugged. “We use them for surveillance at the North Pole.”

“I thought you used the Showglobe for that.”

“Hush, Algebra. She’s talking!”

Hi!” We heard Corrie say through the candy cane. We watched as she stood next to Mikey.

Hey,” he said. He looked up at her.

Corrie cleared her throat. “Um, can I borrow your notes from class this morning?

You’re not in my class.”

She laughed nervously. “No, I know. They’re for my friend, who is in your class. She’s in that class. Your history class, she’s in that class.

You look really young. Are you in high school?

Bye!” Corrie dashed back to our shelf. “It did not go well,” she whispered to us.

“We heard.” Carole sounded discouraged.

We all bent to look through the shelf again. “He’s gone,” I pointed out.

“You dropped this,” a voice behind us said.

We all jumped. Eric hit his head on the shelving.

Mikey’s face was dark as he held out the candy cane.

Spell Sweeper

by Lee Edward Fodi

Synopsis

There’s nothing magical about wizard school
. . . at least, not for Cara Moone.

Most wizard kids spend their days practicing spells and wielding wands, but Cara? She’s on the fast track to becoming a MOP (a.k.a. Magical Occurrence Purger). You see, when a real wizard casts a spell, it leaves behind a residue called spell dust—which, if not disposed of properly, can cause absolute chaos in the nonmagical world. It’s a MOP’s job to clean up the mess.

And no one makes more of a mess than Harlee Wu. Believed to be the Chosen One, destined to save the magical world, Harlee makes magic look easy. Which makes her Cara’s sworn nemesis. Or she would be, if she even knew Cara existed.

Then one of Harlee’s spells leaves something downright dangerous behind it: a rift in the fabric of magic itself. And when more rifts start to appear around the school, all in places Harlee has recently used magic, Cara is pretty sure the so-called “Chosen One” isn’t going to save the world. She’s going to destroy it.

It will take more than magic to clean up a mess this big. Fortunately, messes are kind of Cara’s thing.

Brooms aren’t for flying,

not even when it comes to wizards

* * *

These are the essential items in a spell sweeper’s kit:

Broom

Most people think broom + wizard = flying. But take it from someone who actually attends wizard school—no one straddles a broom and jumps from the top of a Dragonsong tower unless they’ve drunk too much of Madame Kree’s secret-recipe Halloween punch.

Goggles

Good for protecting your eyes from residue splatter or from the venom that an attacking creature might spray in your direction. I only use them when absolutely necessary because even wizards don’t seem to have conjured up a solution for preventing fog-up.

Sweeper scarf

These are woven from the fiber of elf’s breath (a very purple and very pretty plant), which has excellent properties for filtering out toxic fumes. We wear our scarves around our necks and pull them up around our faces when required.

Steel-toed boots

Because when dragons stomp, they apparently don’t mess around.

Gloves

Made with special residue-repellant material. A pretty good idea, because you definitely don’t want magical gunk under your fingernails.

Utility belt

Next to my broom, this is my most important piece of equipment because it’s where I store my broom snippers and vials of stain removers and neutralizers.

Barricade tape

When we do a purge in Bliss territory, it’s procedure to rope off the entire area to ensure no one stumbles upon any magical activity. Our tape reads: Chemical Spill Containment Site: Do Not Cross—because no Bliss would take Danger: Feral Magic at Work seriously.

Miniature dustpan

Useful in both the wizarding and the Bliss worlds.

Flashlight

Same.

Pixies In The Mist

by Rasta Musick

Pixies in the Mist by [Rasta Musick]

Synopsis

Jake had drifted to Japan without any serious intent, and it was going… okay. He had made friends in the local Salsa community, his Japanese was improving, but for Jake the familiar feeling that had dogged him most of his life—that something special should be happening—had struck again.

Kenneth had been assigned to Japan by the pixie queen years ago, which is just enough time for a pixie to get bored and complacent while keeping tabs on the local talent. Most humans had no magic, and most magical humans didn’t know it was their power that made their food taste better, their paintings more vibrant, or people like them more.

When the two met, the spark in Jake gave Kenneth’s role a new urgency. Jake didn’t just have magic, he had a wild and unpredictable kind seen only once in a generation. How could Kenneth keep Jake’s magic from falling into enemy hands? Kill him? Recruit him? Somehow keep him ignorant?

Jake’s magic had quietly led him to Japan, subtly influencing every choice in his life. That something special Jake had been waiting for was about to happen, ensuring his and Kenneth’s lives would never be boring again.

Check out this peek inside:

The cigarette smoke from other patrons was so thick it was visible, adding a haziness to the already dim lighting. Like a fog or mist. Jake squinted as he focused on the woman. She was drinking alone. Her hair cascaded in beautiful locks, and the ruby-red of her lips was tantalizing as she pursed them to drink from her glass. Despite her beauty, something else urged Jake to approach the woman. The sight of her sent a shock through his body. A voice in the back of his head told him that he’d always regret it if he didn’t take the chance to approach her.

Kenneth mentally cursed his slow reaction time and rushed to grab Jake’s shoulder before he got too far. “Yo, Jake. She’s bad news. Let’s go somewhere else.”

Jake waved off his warning. “Come on. It’s just a woman in a club. I’ll be fine. Besides, I’ve got a good feeling about this one.”

Jake turned to keep walking, and Kenneth had to resist the urge to wrestle him to the ground. Kenneth took a step forward. “You don’t get it. This isn’t a good idea. We need to leave.”

Kenneth grit his teeth as Jake shook his head. “I’m going to talk to her, that’s all. There’s something about her. I feel like I’ll regret this if I don’t do it.”

“Seriously, Jake. Let’s go somewhere else.” Kenneth grabbed Jake’s arm again, pulling him toward the door.

About Author Rasta Musick:

Rasta Musick spent the first 12 years of his life in California before moving to Japan with his family. After graduating from college with a Bachelor’s in economics at the age of 16, he spent the years after learning Japanese and working. Having spent more than half his life in Japan, he’s confident that it’s his home.

With many different hobbies, chief of them being Latin dance, he keeps himself physically active as well as mentally active as much as he can. The Latin dance community in Japan is alive and, surprisingly, quite large.

Rasta has lupus and hereditary coproporphyria. Given their complicated nature, he’s had to learn a lot to adapt and manage them. The process also taught him a lot about managing other aspects of his life, and all of this influences his writing.

cryptic journals that warn of unknown foes lying in wait and a crippling debt
owed to a cruel and formidable local Laird, Tannin is thrown into a cut-throat
world where she is perilously out of her depth.

But her problems have only just begun. Secrets lurk in Tannin’s bloodstream –
secrets not even she is aware of. And they want out.

Relatively Normal Secrets

by C.W. Allen

Relatively Normal Secrets by [C.W. Allen]

Synopsis

Like most siblings, Tuesday and Zed don’t always get along. Unlike most siblings, their arguments are over things like whether their parents are hiding a life of crime, or are simply the weirdest adults on the planet. When they decide to go on the hunt for some solid evidence, things get weirder than ever: two thugs with shape-shifting swords show up, their dog shows off some tricks she definitely didn’t learn in obedience school, and even their treehouse turns out to be more than meets the eye.

Their escape leaves Zed and Tuesday stranded in a land where robots and holograms live alongside quaint medieval villagers and soldiers on horseback. Soldiers who insist their father is a disgraced fugitive, and their dog a legendary monster.

If they ever want to see their parents again, they’ll have to learn to work together. After all, they’ve got a mysterious code to break, secrets to unlock, bandits and soldiers to outwit, and a rowdy dog whose antics are getting more outrageous by the minute. Even if they manage to evade the eerie secret police and uncover enough clues to figure out what’s really going on, they’re not sure they’re going to like the truth.

Zed and Tuesday will have to decide who to trust and what really matters, or they’ll never get back to normal (whatever that is.) Because when it comes to normal, everything is relative.

Enjoy this Excerpt

Their father was fond of saying the dog had not managed to learn anything in the years that followed, but that was not strictly true. While it was true that she did not come when called or sit on command, the dog had in fact learned many tricks. Nyx had learned quite early on, for example, how to help herself to the contents of the refrigerator. No one was quite sure how an animal without thumbs was capable of opening a refrigerator door, since she had never been caught in the act, but an entire ham doesn’t simply get up and go for a stroll during the night, now does it?

Zed imagined some people would consider it normal to take a dog along to run errands—as long as the dog could fit comfortably inside a purse, that is, or at the very least wait patiently in the car. But Nyx was neither tiny, nor well-behaved and patient. She was, in fact, huge. Her bristly black fur and legs that seemed much too long for the rest of her frame made her look like a gigantic hairy spider. His mother spent nearly every moment in the dog’s company, and whenever she needed to go inside the grocery store, or post office, or other location where dogs are generally unwelcome, she brought Nyx along to wait in the car for her return. Nyx made use of this time by bouncing anxiously from seat to seat, smearing her nose on the windows.

About Author C.W. Allen:

C.W. Allen is a Nebraskan by birth, a Texan by experience, a Hoosier by marriage, and a Utahn by geography. She knew she wanted to be a writer the moment she read The Westing Game at age twelve, but took a few detours along the way as a veterinary nurse, an appliance repair secretary, and a homeschool parent.

She recently settled in the high desert of rural Utah with her husband, their three children, and a noisy flock of orphaned ideas. Someday she will create literary homes for all of them. (The ideas, not her family.)

Relatively Normal Secrets (Cinnabar Moth Publishing, Fall 2021) is her debut novel. She writes fantasy novels for tweens, picture books for children, and short stories and poems for former children. Her work will appear in numerous anthologies in 2021. She is also a frequent guest presenter at writing conferences and club meetings, which helps her procrastinate knuckling down to any actual writing.

Do you love book related goodies? Bags with your favorite book quotes? Jewelry with a logo or line? Bookish candles?

I do!

Well, I was asked if my book had a candle, what scent would it be. And it made me smile to try and imagine that. It made me want one. And if I could create it (with zero difficulty and as if by magic because goodness knows I wouldn’t actually know where to start), then The Librarian’s Treasure Bookish Candle would be a deep emerald green color with a swirl of gold and bits of pebbles and gold flakes folded in. When lit, the flame would flicker bright yellow and give off a gorgeous and mystical green smoke. And the scent, the scent would be dew on grassy hill mixed with salty air and that glorious smell of a brand new book with a soft, ornate leather cover as its pages opened up beneath your nose.

If someone can make me that candle, you let me know. 😉

Katherine Brown is a Texas girl with books in her blood. She has been reading as long as she can remember and has been “making books” from the time she was a child. Her first few were of a non-traditional binding – cardboard & wrapping paper stapled with handwritten pages in the middle & a ribbon closure! Her love of books runs deep and she hopes to encourage readers of all ages to explore and use their imagination by helping them fall in love with books just like she did. Katherine is married to a wonderful man, Patrick, and has a spunky, smart, amazing step-daughter Lexi. Lexi is the biggest fan of this author’s first published series, School is Scary, and is constantly asking when the next book will be finished so she can read it too.
When not writing or reading, you can often find Katherine eating chocolate or enjoying time with family.

The First Sin

South Of Eden

by  Lisa Beth Darling

The First Sin: South of Eden by [Lisa Beth Darling]

Synopsis

Lucifer Returns to Eden

Lucifer is unceremoniously yanked out of Hell by his Father so he can return to his old job in the Garden of Eden. When he arrives, broken, battered, and bleeding, he falls into the arms of Eve who is unsure about seeing her old lover again as are the people now living in a dying paradise.

Tasked with returning the Sacred Trees of Life and Knowledge to flourishing bounty once more, Lucifer struggles to learn his new place in his old home. Yet, he hasn’t been placed there solely to tend the Garden. His son, Cain, is on the way with murder and destruction on his mind.

Having lived, cursed by God, for eons, Cain Enoch has made quite a name for himself and amassed a fortune that would make even his Grandfather envious and with it he’ll stop at nothing to find Eden and destroy. Why? So he can finally die even though it means taking the Earth, Heaven, and Hell with him.

Enjoy this peek inside:

“If you’re still God, Chuck, and I think you are, why don’t you just fix whatever is wrong with the place? If you want me to go back to Eden then something is definitely seriously wrong because you banished me for eternity…remember?”

Chuck made a hard but very truthful confession, “Yeah, it wasn’t my finest moment.”

“There’s an understatement,” Eve huffed and took another drink.

That got his hackles up, “To be fair, Eve, you did go against me. You did eat that apple.”

Eve laughed again, “It was the sweetest most juiciest apple I ever had. That’s not why you cursed me and we both know it. So cut through the bullshit and tell me what’s going on.”

The time had come to lay his cards on the table for her to see and so he did even though it was most difficult, “It’s dying, Eve, Eden is dying.” Although he knew he shouldn’t, Chuck tried to reach for her hand to show her his sincerity but she pulled it away. “I need you to go back and be its caretaker again.”

That seemed impossible almost laughable but the desperation in Chuck’s eyes kept the laughter coming to her lips at bay. “I was never its caretaker that was Lucifer’s job.”

Chuck cleared his throat, “Yeah, well, my rebel son is still busy in hell, so I come to you.” He raised his eyes hesitantly to meet her gaze, “A Celestial must sit on the Throne of Hell, Eve, I needed Lucifer to fill that spot. I know you hate me for it but I didn’t have another choice.”

Darkly she whispered those words again, “That’s not why you did it.”

Getting angry again, Chuck muttered, “He taught you that trick, didn’t he? That Soul Stare thing he does.”

“It’s not a trick, Chuck, and no I don’t have that power you’re just easier to read than Dr. Seuss.”

Chuck began to stand up but Gabriel’s hand closed over his again keeping him in his place. “That won’t get us anywhere, Dad. Face it you got a lot to answer for here, don’t you? So let’s just not smite each other and figure this out.”

Excerpt:

I leaned against his chest, listening to his rapid heartbeat. I breathed in his musky scent, an addicting
aroma of fig and sandalwood. We sat there wrapped in each other’s arms until I felt myself start to drift off to sleep.

“Hey, none of that now. We better get back before they notice we are gone. Magic like that is draining. You need to rest.”

He pulled me to my feet and led me back up the stairs and out the red door. We walked down the hall hand in hand, not a guard in sight. As we rounded the corner to my cellblock an alarm
sounded, followed by the warden’s voice over the intercom.

“Return to your cells immediately for a head count. Those outside of their cells in five minutes will
be dealt with using lethal force. Return to your cells now.”

Brendan’s jaw clenched. He grabbed my cheeks between his palms, kissing me hard on the mouth. I wrapped my arms around his neck, searching for that feeling from before. I reached it just
as his lips parted from mine and his fingers caressed my cheeks. My body craved
his again and I never wanted him to leave.

“Get to your cell.” The shine in his eyes was gone and a dull sadness was all that was left. “Stay safe,
Newbie.” He turned on his heels and sprinted down the hall, disappearing around
a corner before I could say goodbye. A splash followed by dampness on my leg
dragged me from my trance. I looked down and my eyes landed on Bree peeking out
from the water. Only the top half of her face and head were visible. She bobbed
up and down in the dark, stone trench, her eyes wide with fright. She lifted
her head completely out of the water and locked eyes with me.

“Jewels, I think the secrets have escaped,” she whispered.

“What secrets, Bree?”

“All of them.” Footsteps thundered down the hall as inmates barreled into their cells and Bree
disappeared beneath the water.

Author Interview
.

Q: Can you, for those who don’t know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

A: I realized that I liked to write back in high school. Anytime I had the option of doing an essay or script or anything like that for a project I would do it. It was an easy A and I enjoyed it. I decided a few years ago that I was going to try and write an actual novel. The first full length thing I wrote was about 40k words. I wasn’t happy enough with it to actually publish it so I decided to start reading more to figure out which style of writing worked best for me. Once I finished the first draft of the book I actually published I let several people read it just to get some feedback before making it public. Once I felt it was ready I got to work on publishing and now I can’t stop writing. Doing this feels peaceful, in the same way that others read or play video games to escape, half of my time awake is spent writing.

Q: Where were you born/grew up at?

A: I grew up in a small town in Louisiana. As I got older I moved to towns that were slightly bigger until eventually moving to the biggest town in the area.

Q: If you knew you’d die tomorrow, how would you spend your last day?

A: I would spend it with my family.

Q: What are you passionate about these days?

A: Writing and coming up new ideas to write about. If I’m not working on my current project or I don’t have access to my laptop then I take notes on the next 2-3 stories I plan on writing. It makes the actual writing process so much easier.

Q: What do you do to unwind and relax?

A: I like to read, play video games, recently got really into arcades. Almost anything.

Q: When did you first consider yourself a writer?

A: Once people who weren’t family members started reading my book.

Q: Do you have a favorite movie?

A: A few. The Dark Knight, Zootopia, Catch Me if You Can, Wreck it Ralph, etc.

Q: As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

A: My cat Nami.

Q: What inspired you to write this book?

A: It was actually meant to be a video game. I went to college for game programming and it was one of my ideas. The concept wasn’t exactly the same but a few core elements were there. Since our assignments were only class projects and I felt really attached to this specific idea, I kept it to myself and decided to turn it into a series. I don’t regret that decision at all.

Q: What can we expect from you in the future?

A: I plan on releasing at least 1-2 books every year. I want to use the world I created with this first series to tell dozens of different stories.

Q: Do you have any “side stories” about the characters?

A: Not yet but I have several planned. There are some characters I feel I couldn’t explain as well as I wanted in the first book.

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in Emi?

A: I have three main characters who each go through some sort of change during the events of the first book. I plan on having them grow and develop over the course of the series. The title character Emi, is a little girl lost in a strange magical world with no one by her side except for a giant teddy bear. The royal guard, Arlo, is a loyal soldier doing anything he can to serve his kingdom and make his superiors proud. The scientist, Redrick, is a bit stuck up to the idea of magic being the most viable resource in peoples lives. By the end of the first book their attitudes and thoughts change. Some slightly, but some have major revelations.

Q: How did you come up with the concept and characters for the book?

A: A lot has changed since I first came up with this. Many of the ideas and characters came from another story I wrote before but decided not to try and publish. The concept of the character Emi came from a video game I tried making in college. The idea was to have two characters, a little girl that would solve puzzles, and a giant teddy bear that would fight enemies. I basically took that idea and added it to the story I had written and to me, it just worked.

Q: Where did you come up with the names in the story?

A: Names are weird. I didn’t want to use regular names like Josh and Jessica for my story but I didn’t want long random names either. For the regular characters like Emi and Arlo, I would just run through hundreds of sounds in my head until I hear something that I like. Then I just change it until it sounds like a good name. I wanted the god characters to have meaning behind their names. I did research on Latin, Hindu, Incan, and other similar languages to come up with things I liked. In the book the Goddess of water is named Marabonya, which translates to “bitter flood.”

Q: What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

A: Theres a moment I get, either while I’m writing or just brainstorming on my phone. I’ll come up with a twist or story/character detail that sounds amazing. Something that while I’m typing it, it just makes me smile. Those are the moments I feel like what I’m doing is more than just a hobby or a way to make extra money. I feel like if someone reading it has the same reaction as I did writing it, then I’m doing my job.

Q: Tell us about your main characters- what makes them tick?

A: Emi is a ten year old girl who falls down a chest into a magical land while looking for her father. When she first arrives she is a scared, lonely child. As the story goes on she breaks out of her habits and can eventually fend for herself. But for a good portion of the first book she is just a kid. A scared kid looking for her dad in a strange place.

Q: Who designed your book covers?

A: I did, since it was my first book I wanted to do everything myself. I wrote, edited, designed the cover, and published myself. I really can’t draw so I knew I needed something simple. By the time it was done I loved it. It’s a really simple design but I feel like it’s a good fit.

Q: If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

A: Not at all. If there are any mistakes then they are there for me to learn from. If I don’t learn from my mistakes then I can’t make each story better than the last.

Q: Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?

A: I learned which style of writing best suits me. All I can do now is improve.

Q: Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

A: If you’ve taken the time to read my book I just want to say thank you. Time is valuable and I appreciate you spending some of yours on me.

Q: What is your favorite part of this book and why?

A: I love it all. From the things I did great to the things I could have done better, this was important to me. I spent three years writing this on and off because I wasn’t sure if I could do it. Now that its done I can’t believe I waited so long.

Q: Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

A: In a way, I put a piece of myself in every character. Not to say that each character is based on me. But most of them have a few mannerisms similar to myself. But as far as attitudes and thought processes go, I wouldn’t say there are any real people who inspired the characters.

Q: How long have you been writing?

A: Probably about ten years. Most of my previous writing was in school but I always did way more than what was required. If it was a thousand words essay I would turn in a minimum of three thousand. I had the option of rewriting a scene from Macbeth for a project and did half the play instead. One teacher told me to write a children’s book for a class. It was supposed to be a few words on each page accompanied by a picture. Instead of that I wrote a five thousand word story about popcorn. Still got an A so it all worked out.

Q: What kind of research do you do before you begin writing a book?

A: A lot of my research is on names. Specifically for god characters. I like to try and have the names mean something. I have scientists in this book so I had to make sure a few of the things I talk about are correct too.

Q: Do you see writing as a career?

A: I could definitely see myself doing this as a career. Hopefully I’ll get there one day, but even if I only sell thirty copies of every book I write, that won’t stop me writing more.

Q: Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?

A: I love to read. Anything fantasy/scifi will always catch my attention. I just wish I had more time to read. I have about twenty books that have been sitting on a shelf for a few years now that I haven’t had a chance to start yet.

Q: Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?

A: There’s always one main story open on my laptop. But I have several going on in my phone. My notes are full of topics, characters, places, I like to always have something to start once I finish my current project.

Q: What made you want to become an author and do you feel it was the right decision?

A: I wanted to do something that I enjoyed doing. Coming up with stories like this was always something I found myself doing when I was younger. Now that I’m able to actually do something with it I feel like I made a good decision.

Q: A day in the life of the author?

A: Four or five days out of the week, I mange a restaurant. But when I’m home I spend hours at my desk writing. I’ll take a break every now and then to read or play video games, but most of my off days are spent writing.

Q: Advice they would give new authors?

A: The biggest thing I wish someone would have told me was to keep going. I took month long breaks while writing my first book because I wasn’t sure if it was worth it. But once you publish it and you get your first four or five star review, it makes you regret the time you wasted.

Q: Describe your writing style.

A: In my current series, I like to be the narrator. It feels like I’m actually telling the story. But I’m open to trying out other styles. I just have to practice and do some research first.

Q: What is your writing process? For instance do you do an outline first? Do you do the chapters first? What are common traps for aspiring writers?

A: I like to come up with a quick summary first then expand on it. A summary of the story turns into a summary of each chapter. Then that turns into my first draft. While writing the first draft I like to go back and start editing before I compete it. The more I read my story the easier it is for me to add things. I’ll read and edit something 6-8 times before I publish it. I’d say rushing through an edit is a bad idea. Especially is you are doing it yourself. Take your time and really know your story.

Q: What is your writing Kryptonite?

A: My cat.

Q: Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

A: Being original is really important to me. I’ve taken inspiration from other things but I try and make the story my own. I’ve compared my first book to Alice in Wonderland crossed with Wizard of Oz, but I think I’ve done a good job of not being too similar to them.

Q: If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

A: Just keep going, I know it seems like a waste of time right now but it all works out.

Q: How long on average does it take you to write a book?

A: My first book took me three years to write. I had no motivation to keep going and took month long breaks from it. As soon as it was published I started writing my second one. I’m on track to have it released about 7-8 months after the publish date of my first one. I plan on sticking to this schedule.

Q: Do you believe in writer’s block?

A: Yeeeeessssss!

Enjoy this peek inside:
.

Looking up she saw a large wooden chest with an old rusty padlock. Lightning flashed for a few seconds through the attic window. She noticed that the lock on the chest was open. Curious, she removed it and lifted the lid.

She suddenly felt something pulling her down. It got harder and harder to hold onto the edge of the chest. She could feel her hands slipping. Just then she saw the lid begin to close. Afraid of her hands being crushed, she released her grip and fell down into the chest.

A rustling in the nearby bushes interrupted her sobbing. She looked up and saw a wolf like creature emerge from the forest. Its fur was pitch black.

She turned carefully and slowly to see the creature that she thought would soon end her. It was her teddy. She felt at ease but confused. The creature holding the decayed stem looked exactly like her teddy but much larger. Its mouth was sewed shut. It had the same two uneven button eyes.

    “Where am I?” She asked.

“You’re in my cabin. If you want a more specific answer, you’re in the Goddess Gardens.”

.                                              Emi was still confused. “And where is that?”

The woman wasn’t sure what to say. “Where are you from girl?” she asked with an interested look.
