Synopsis

The Black Swamp. Some say it’s haunted. Others say it’s the gateway to Hell. Only a few have ever seen it and survived. For hundreds of years, the denizens of the swamp have preyed upon the unsuspecting.

Enter former Navy SEAL Shade Channing, who, in a strange twist of fate, finds himself employed as the game warden of the infamous Black Swamp. Instead of managing wildlife, Shade finds himself fighting a horde of creatures straight out of mankind’s darkest nightmares. Mentored by fellow warden, Native American Shaman Waya Firehat, Shade must learn how to battle them all.

When Waya’s daughter is taken hostage by bank robbers that escape into the swamp, Shade and Waya find themselves in a race against time-and the monsters of the swamp-to find her.

Synopsis

I’ve never felt at home at Juilliard. My stagefright always makes me choke when I’m under the spotlight, something my classmates enjoy watching. But when I’m dragged into a new world—where singing is more than a talent, it’s magic—I can’t hide my voice anymore. This new power is tempting, but terrifying forces swirl around the kingdom of Cantus.

Missing girls, rivals at my new academy, Rebels, demons slaying people in the street—and it all leads back to him.

The mysterious, powerful Phantom, who lurks beneath the school and demands he be my teacher—demands which soon grow into something deeper, darker. But if I want to survive this place, or have any hope of going home, I may have no choice but to give in to him… and all he desires.

Author’s Note: Taken by the Phantom is the first book in a Magic Academy Romance series that will set your heart–and other parts of you–on fire.

Excerpt:
Phantom.

And for once, I cannot help myself.

I am scarcely more than shadow, not nearly as full in form as she or Suzanna. Perhaps she will not notice or name the sensation of touch. Perhaps she will believe it a cast of the magic. Perhaps, perhaps, she will know it is me.

Just her hair. A touch. It is all I need.

I lean close to her, alight my fingertips upon her arms. I am not fully man, but half in shadow, and yet I can feel the rain soaked into the cloth, the heat of her skin just beneath. She inhales sharply when I touch her, lips parting further, eyelids fluttering. Shh, I think. A moment more. One touch.

She grants me my wish, her eyes remaining shut, and leans back ever so slightly, almost imperceptibly, into me. I draw nearer still, savoring the ripple of her hair, stirred by my breath. I am close enough I could press my lips to the vital curve of her neck, close enough I could slide my hands over her breasts, pull her flush against me, test the fit of her curves against mine.

What pleasure is there in that?

She arched herself against me when we met in the Hall of Mirrors. She consumed her own fear like the snake’s tail and came out stronger for it. Yet now her eyes remain closed.

I suddenly want to scream at her to open them. To look at me, to touch me, to want me. And yet she does not. She is little more than silk, supple against me, shaped by my contours. I press myself closer, my body against hers, and brush my fingers along the length of her arms.

Still she remains in the rhapsody of Suzanna’s closed-eye song, and still the darkness swells between the light in heady thrusts.

But Krissy does not sober. She rests her hands in my palms, her thin fingers like porcelain, dainty and fine, mine in black leather, monstrous beside them. With me beside her, she is a sun in eclipse, half-swallowed by darkness.

Her breathing has deepened; it matches mine, step for step. We are in tandem as I press myself to her, the curves of her hips, fuller in contact than in sight. That hunger inside of me stirs once more. Against the swell of her body, I harden and smother the alien urge to gasp.

Then her fingers tighten on mine, and at once there is silence.

Book Title: The High Court by Chris Ledbetter
Category: YA Fiction, 290 pages
Genre: Fantasy
Publisher: Month 9 Books
Release date: October 16, 2018
Tour dates: April 1 to 30, 2019
Content Rating: PG (some profanity (damn, ass), no f-bombs, some kissing, no sex scenes, some violence, nothing gory or graphic)

My Review

I sure had fun with the first book in the series and was curious what would happen as the story continues.

This starts up right where it left off. Zeus returns to school for the next term. I thought the adventures and entanglements were fast and furious before and they were just as exciting this time around. Peer competition is strong, danger once again rears it’s ugly head, and when the trials begin the story really takes off. Anything can and does happen, and when the going gets tough, these young gods join forces and face the challenges together.

I’m all for character development and the author does a good job of giving us flawed characters that he allows to stumble and fall, pick themselves back up, and grow from experience. With them being mythical beings, that just adds to the excitement.

I got answers to some questions from the first book and new ones were added, keeping my interest piqued for where things were headed next. I’ll be waiting for the next chapter in these young god’s lives.

Synopsis

High atop Mount Olympus, dawn breaks on a new academic term. Normalcy has returned to campus following a harrowing expedition into The Underworld to rescue kidnapped students by Zeus and his fellow Olympians. Now, as they prepare to testify in The High Court, Hyperion will be tried for the attack on Crete and death of Anytos. Kronos will stand trial for the murder of Mount Olympus Prep’s Headmaster Ouranos.

As the trials draw near, Mount Olympus Prep students and faculty are besieged repeatedly by a race of gargantuan stone and earth giants. Under heavy assault, the Olympians are forced to flee to the volcanic island of Limnos to regroup. Meanwhile, a toxic poison Zeus has carried with him since a prior fight with a dragoness, creeps toward his brain.

In a race against time and beasts, Zeus and his friends must find a way to survive not only the toxin ravaging Zeus’ body, but also the giants who grow stronger after every attack, and somehow make it to the The High Court alive.

Book Title: The Sky Throne by Chris Ledbetter
Category: YA Fiction, 300 pages
Genre: Fantasy
Publisher: Month 9 Books
Release date: April 18, 2017
Content Rating: PG + M (No f-words but there may be some mild profanity, and mild religious expletives such as “damn”, “hell” and “Oh God!”, some depictions of violence. No drug use or underage drinking. Some semi-mature themes – suggestion of sexual misconduct by certain characters, but not the actual performing of it.)

My Review

I’ve often enjoyed reading books about Greek mythology, whether fiction or non. When I came across The Sky Throne, the idea of a coming of age story about Zeus sounded like fun.

The author ‘s knowledge and research were very apparent and helped refresh my rusty memory on key players and secondary ones, while also spinning his own tales, changing things up and making this even more fun.

There’s some romance. Zeus really does like the ladies. At one point I feared a love triangle. Not a fan of though so, luckily, it didn’t really play that way through the whole book.

And being a coming of age story, the characters felt younger, reacted appropriately for youth who believed they were going to live forever, and they got into all sorts of mischief. I liked learning about how they were before they became adults, all powerful and arrogant. Everyone was a kid once.

I’m not going to go into details here as the book is a long one, but the author doesn’t bog you down with too much detail. I’ll conclude saying it was fun. Loads of fun.

Leigh Anderson loves all things Gothic and paranormal. She wrote her
master’s thesis on vampire imagery in Gothic novels and met her
husband while assuming the role of a vampire online. She currently
teaches writing at several universities and has a rather impressive
collection of tiny hats. She lives in a small town in the mountains
where she raises bearded dragons and gives them wings for Halloween.
She is currently working on too many writing projects, and yet not enough.

Alice Wilde grew up with a love of reading and spent her teens writing
and submitting her essays as fantasy stories, much to the annoyance,
but often high marks, of her teachers. Now, she spends much of her
days writing historical fantasy paranormal romances (filled with
gorgeous men and, of course, magic) that she hopes will spark a flame
in readers as much as they do in herself.
Alice is currently living with her cat in a bustling city she never sees
much of, as she’s too busy dreaming up, writing down, and living in
her next paranormal RH romance, though she generally finds enough
time for a real-life date or two… We all need a bit of inspiration
now and again, right?

Mechanica

Book One

  by Betsy Cornwell

22749698

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre:  Retelling / Steampunk

Synopsis

Nicolette’s awful stepsisters call her “Mechanica” to demean her, but the nickname fits: she learned to be an inventor at her mother’s knee. Her mom is gone now, though, and the Steps have turned her into a servant in her own home.

But on her sixteenth birthday, Nicolette discovers a secret workshop in the cellar and begins to dare to imagine a new life for herself. Could the mysterious books and tools hidden there—and the mechanical menagerie, led by a tiny metal horse named Jules—be the key to escaping her dreary existence? With a technological exposition and royal ball on the horizon, the timing might just be perfect for Nicolette to earn her freedom at last.

Gorgeous prose and themes of social justice and family shine in this richly imagined Cinderella retelling about an indomitable inventor who finds her prince . . . but realizes she doesn’t want a fairy tale happy ending after all.

Mother Of The Chosen

by Janeal Taylor

Synopsis

Adriella is pregnant with the child she’s always wanted.

She can’t wait to share the joy with her husband. Prophecy has other plans. The countryside is a ablaze with rumors of a soon-to-be-born child who will destroy the High King.

A royal decree demands the death of any child who could threaten the throne, including Adriella’s unborn baby. Worse, her husband is one of the soldier’s enlisted to carry out the king’s demands.

Now Adriella must keep her secret and flee, rather than celebrate with her spouse.

With the High King’s men searching for anyone who defies him, the country is full of grieving parents, and the streets run red with the blood of the innocents. Adriella knows her chances of survival are slim, but she’ll sacrifice everything to stay one step ahead of the law.

If she can’t evade capture, she’ll lose the one thing more precious to her than her own life—her child.

Book One of her Mother of the Chosen series.

 Enjoy this peek inside:

Candui glanced around before she leaned close and whispered, “You’re pregnant, aren’t you?”

The blood rushed from my head.

“You’re so pale,” she said. “It’s true, isn’t it? You’re going to have a baby. You and Richart have been trying for so long…”

“N—no. It’s such shocking news. That’s all.” She couldn’t know, not if I was to protect the life of my child.

Then another thought hit me. Richart, my husband, worked for the zasin. The high king’s army. He was well-ranked, and even better regarded, especially for someone only twenty-eight years old. Our town was mostly controlled by him. He would be the first person to turn me in. My baby would die.

About Author Janeal Falor

Brenik has always been envious of his twin sister, Bray. Growing up as fairy-like creatures, known as bats, everything came easier to Bray. While Brenik spent his time in her shadows, never feeling he was enough. After escaping their world of Laith, and living on Earth for ten years, Brenik attempts to strike a deal with the Stone of Desire to become human. Though true humanity is not an option, he will accept the curse that will alter him to get as close as he can.

Living in a tree trunk for the past year hasn’t been easy for Bray, more so after her brother disappears again. When a human boy and his brother, Wes, find her, a new friendship is struck. Through Wes, Bray learns there can be more to life than waiting within a tree. But worrying over where Brenik has vanished to always remains in the back of her mind.

When Bray reunites with Brenik, she realizes she must help him break the curse after she discovers the need for blood is beginning to overpower him. The curse not only damages those who get close to Brenik, but it could also destroy whatever is blooming between Bray and Wes.

.

Enjoy this exclusive excerpt!
Bray wasn’t sure how long she had drifted off for, but there was a puddle of wetness against her cheek when she woke up—okay, so it was only drool from herself. Lifting a hand up toward her cheek, she swiped the saliva away and rubbed it on to the hammock. Classy, she thought, but there was already some gathered there anyway.
Remembering the events from earlier, Bray headed straight to the hole and peeked out. She shifted her head from left to right. Nothing. Bray looked up and down—she could see a few bushes had already been planted in the dirt.
Then she saw it: a circular stone bowl filled with water sitting on top of a long thick stem, attached to a circular bottom. A birdbath! Almost giddily, Bray stepped on the ledge of the hole and leaped off, flapping her wings hurriedly to the nearest pink and yellow peach. Opening her jaw wide, she bit into the thin skin. A juicy one. The fruit filled her mouth with delicious pleasure, and she took one more long bite before diving down to the birdbath.
The top of her newfound treasure was a perfect circle with tiny mounds around it resembling hills. Bray landed on the ceramic and bent down to take a seat, before placing her bare feet into the warm water that had been perfectly heated from the shining sun.
Peering down at the clear water, Bray saw no sign of intrusion from other creatures yet. She rotated her head in every direction, as if she would be caught just by thinking about slipping into the water—still no sign of life.
Flicking her braid over her shoulder, Bray pursed her lips together to hide the smile aching to shine against her face and jumped into the water. The splash echoed. Her bare feet scraped the rough bottom, while her dress inflated and then clung to her body as she shot to the surface. She let out a small giggle to herself. It was sad that the only highlight of the past year was hopping into a shallow pool of water with no one around except for her.
She leaned back into the liquid, letting herself float and moving her arms slowly up and down, while swimming in figure-eight circles.
Bray closed her eyes and let the water cover her ears, so it felt like nothing in the world existed, except for the muffled vibrations from the liquid.
A loud booming sounded from above, and her eyelids thrust open, meeting dark brown eyes, light brown skin, and that black bowl hair. Tiny human. Luca.
Freeze, Bray thought to herself, not even blinking her eyes. She held them wide open, thinking he wouldn’t notice her, or maybe he would just assume she was a bird. Even though he was staring at her and had spoken something she didn’t hear clearly.
Nope. That isn’t going to work. He hovered closer, his eyes scrunched halfway closed to examine her more thoroughly. Unable to hold her eyes open any longer, Bray blinked several times.
“What are you?” he asked, genuine amazement creeping into his words, lips slightly parted.
“A bat!” Bray yelled, and she jumped up from the warmth of the water, darting straight for the tree hole.
Breathing heavily, Bray landed inside and collided with the floor. She rolled to her back, running both hands down her face. “Why did I come out without paying attention? I know not to!” Ruth had always told her this.
A quake trembled through the tree, causing shivers to run up and down her spine. What is the little beast doing? Oh no, what if he is trying to chop down the tree? My home—the peaches! Bray didn’t know why she was thinking about stupid peaches when there was another fruit tree directly next door.
Despite the thunderous rumbling, Bray grabbed the needle from underneath her hammock and dodged toward the window. If the little beast thought he could take her down, then he had another thing coming. She would prick his eye—actually, she would poke both of his eyes to protect her and Brenik’s home.
When Bray reached the edge of the window, the sound stopped. She peeped her head out of the hole, right as a face met hers, his black hair falling forward over a hazel eye—an eye she was going to poke. Startled, she jumped back instead of toward him.
A broad smile crossed the little beast’s face. “Hello.”
Freezing once again, until she remembered that the staying-still-as-a-statue strategy didn’t work in the birdbath, she meekly said, “Hi.”
Bray brought the needle up toward his smiling face, just in case.
“Are you planning on sewing something?” He tilted his head at the needle.
“Yeah, your eyeball.” She gave him a hard glare.
“What?” he asked while laughing hysterically.
He was laughing? Not scared? Bray brought the needle closer. “Yeah, you need to leave and never come back. This is my home.”
“No. Technically, it’s my brother’s home,” he said, still smiling.
“What brother? You mean your dad out there who was planting this morning?”
Luca shook his head, and she didn’t miss the wince before he spoke. “No, that’s my brother, Wes. I don’t have a mom or dad.”
Crestfallen, Bray lowered the needle. “Oh. Me neither. I only have a brother, but he will be gone for a while.” She paused and glanced at the note Brenik had left behind, her chest tightening. Then she shrugged it off and shifted her gaze back to the boy. “By the way, my name is Brayora, but you can call me Bray.” For some reason, she wasn’t worried anymore about the human.
“I’m Luca Duran.” He plopped his thin fingers on the edge of the hole.
“Yeah, I heard your name this morning, little beast. I mean, Luca.” She thought little beast suited him better than Luca.

Four cords of power. Three trials. Two soul-crushing
secrets.
For Lera, training has never been so
hard. With the males’ power roaring in her veins and River’s cold demand that
she master the magic before the third trial, something has to give. Worse
still, River is keeping something from her. Something about his past and
Lunos’s future.
For River and Coal, the past must stay
buried. Though one male’s nightmare sits on a throne and the other’s hides in
his soul, they are equally unprepared for Lera’s startling determination to
undress the truth.
But when Mors’s Emperor Jawrar makes a
play for Lunos, neither Lera’s fledgling magic nor the males’ old wounds can

convinced Lera is a mistake.

When the quint refuses to be cleaved apart, the enraged elders give them a
choice: exile from Lunos or demotion to the lowest of trainees. Subject again
to the humiliations and deadly trials they endured centuries ago, the males now
face a new challenge—training Lera to survive.

River, Shade, Coal, and Tye will do whatever it takes to keep Lera safe. But
Lera will do whatever she must to keep them together—even if it means putting

Four elite fae warriors. One mortal female. A magical bond they
can’t allow—or resist.

Orphaned and sold to a harsh master, Lera’s life is about mucking stalls,
avoiding her master’s advances, and steering clear of the mystical forest
separating the mortal and fae worlds. Only fools venture into the immortal
realms, and only dark rumors come out… Until four powerful fae warriors
appear at Lera’s barn.

River, Coal, Tye, and Shade have waited a decade for their new fifth to be
chosen, the wounds from their quint brother’s loss still raw. But the magic has
played a cruel trick, bonding the four immortal warriors to… a female. A
mortal female.

Distractingly beautiful and dangerously frail, Lera can only be one thing—a
mistake. Yet as the males bring Lera back to the fae lands to sever the bond,
they discover that she holds more power over their souls than is safe for
anyone… especially for Lera herself.

Power of Five is a full-length reverse-harem fantasy novel.

Excerpt
from LERA OF LUNOS:
“There was rather little
incentive to follow the rules at that point,” Tye said simply. “And smuggling
pays well.” He swallowed painfully, unable to look at her for this part, to see
in her eyes the moment she realized he’d been right to push her away. “Now do
you see why I thought you should go with Shade? If it were up to me, Lilac
Girl, I would never let you out of my sight for the rest of my life. But it
isn’t up to me, especially now that you know the full truth. You deserve
better, Lera. You deserve the world.”
Silence trailed at the heels
of Tye’s words, the cave around them a capsule of secrets. Each memory shoving
itself insistently from its hiding place in the depths of Tye’s mind drove
another needle into his soul. Fingers tightening on the rough stone, Tye
inhaled the damp, mossy air and awaited judgment.
Several heartbeats passed
before Lera rose to her knees, her cool hands gripping Tye’s face. Tipping it
to look so deeply into his eyes that Tye felt his soul bared beneath her
intense chocolate gaze. Stars, if the girl could make him feel so vulnerable
with one look, what could she do with a word? A step? Fear crackled along his
veins, but when he tried to pull back, to escape for a bit of air, Lera would
not let him.
“I see you, Tye.” Her words
rang gently through the cave, stopping Tye’s heart. “And I want you. Not for
play. I want you for you, forever.”
Tye’s blood stirred, waking
him to Lera’s words. She wanted him.
She wanted him.
The way he’d always longed
for her but had been so certain she would never feel in return. He stared into
her eyes, hardly daring to believe it.
“And I want forever to start
now, Tye,” she said quietly.
