The ancient land of Éirinn is mired in war. Ciara, princess of Mide, has never known a time when Éirinn’s kingdoms were not battling for power, or Northmen were not plundering their shores.

The people of Mide have always been safe because of Ciara’s unearthly ability to control her enemies’ minds and actions. But lately a mysterious crow has been appearing to Ciara, whispering warnings of an even darker threat. Although her clansmen dismiss her visions as pagan nonsense, Ciara fears this coming evil will destroy not just Éirinn but the entire world.

Then the crow leads Ciara to Leif, a young Northman leader. Leif should be Ciara’s enemy, but when Ciara discovers that he, too, shares her prophetic visions, she knows he’s something more. Leif is mounting an impressive army, and with Ciara’s strength in battle, the two might have a chance to save their world.

With evil rising around them, they’ll do what it takes to defend the land they love…even if it means making the greatest sacrifice of all.

Excerpt

The waves viciously beat against the worn rock, sending sprays of white water into the air. It should have been deterrent enough, but the Northmen were relentless. Their longship had already landed. Men poured from its side like a wave of death. As I took in the square sail—white with a crimson skeletal dragon—my heart beat a furious rhythm in my chest. I’d fought countless Northmen in battles throughout our kingdom, but the sight of that sail still made every muscle in my body clench in warring fear and anger—and memory.

My clansmen’s blood staining the earth red—

—my sister’s hand in mine as we tried to escape—

—her eyes wide as the blood trailed down her throat, and me, screaming, screaming—

I shook my head, banishing the memories before they could weaken my mind further. Sleipnir snorted and pawed the ground in response. Like other horses, he could sense my emotions. But unlike other horses, my apprehension only made him bolder.

Fergus wheeled his horse over to me and spat on the ground. “Let us pray the blood of the raiders will flow this day.”

I glanced at the men assembled beside me and frowned. A Northman longship of the size of the one on our shore could hold at least sixty men, far more than our own crew. “The battle can go no farther than this cliff—not this time.”

“I will cover you as best I can,” Fergus said. “You search for their leader.”

I tightened my grip on the hilt of my sword. My arm muscles tensed, and my heart pounded. Anticipation of the battle was always the hardest: the prickling adrenaline, the torrent of memories, the cold dread. I endured it all because my sisters and mother were huddled in fear in their room. We were the only things preventing them from being killed.

I snapped my attention back to the battle. The Northmen had begun the treacherous climb to our stronghold. With any luck, we would pick them off as they emerged at the top of the cliff. The Northman raiding strategy was always to ambush. Instead of recognizing such actions as dishonorable, they seemed happy to live to fight again. They wouldn’t expect us to be waiting for them, and if we could defeat their leader quickly enough, they might retreat. There was no dishonor in retreat in their eyes either, not when their strategy to ambush meant they were usually slinking into a castle and catching its warriors unawares.

Holding the high ground was our advantage. We had to make it count.

With a shout, the first man made it to the top. He showed a momentary flash of surprise that we were lying in wait for him, but he recovered quickly. Battle-axe raised and shield in front of his chest, he charged. More of the enemy followed, their armor and long beards making them indistinguishable from one another. My clansmen made rivers of their blood.

Enjoy this glimpse inside:

Ling slammed the book closed and tossed it to the bed next to her before moving across the room and staring down at the woman lying there. Ling could remember nothing of her, of what they’d been through together, of ever having met her. But there were pages and pages of writing in the grimoire detailing all of it. There was more of Fern in those pages than anyone else. They had become allies and friends as they’d made their way through the vagaries of this never-ending war. Ling marveled at that even now. She’d been so certain she’d never have such a relationship again, but the abuse she’d experienced because of what she was had stopped at the borders of Brielle. Even Fariss didn’t hate her for what she was, though his desire to destroy her was no less.

Ling ran a finger lightly along Fern’s blue-scaled cheek. Warm, dry, a hint of roughness beneath her finger. She needed to talk to someone about what she’d read, what she’d been through, the hate and anger she was feeling. She wished fiercely that Rudy were here with her. Or, more accurately, that he had stuck by her side as she would have done for him. But he’d said nothing and done nothing as Laera had tried to kill her. His face had been twisted with anguish, but what good did that do her? He’d done nothing, lifted not even a finger to help her. She wanted to punish him too.

Perhaps Fern was the only friend she had anymore, but she didn’t feel like a friend. Ling dropped to her knees and rested her head beside Fern’s ravaged shoulder. She tried to dredge up something, some memory of their time together, some feeling for the woman lying on the bed in front of her, but there was nothing.

Of the others, she barely knew Dreskin, and even if that hadn’t been true, he’d brought Celene aboard this ship. Celene, the mother of the man who’d raped her. Her daughter Amalya too, a girl who was physically close to Ling’s own age, but mentally still a child.

Dreskin had been there; he had yanked Fraser off her and had dragged him up to see the captain. He knew what sort of man Fraser was, and had brought that woman aboard anyway. He was no friend of hers.

Captain Drake had helped her, and continued to help her, but she’d also allowed Ling to walk out into Marique with Fariss. Drake had known what Fariss was capable of, but had said nothing to stop Ling from leaving with him. Ally she might be, but she was hardly reliable.

And not one of them understood what it was like to be cut so perfectly adrift from everything you knew and from everything you were. Only Fern knew what it was like to be so different, so hated for that difference, and so completely alone. Ling was the only changeling in the world who thought and felt and looked so completely human. Fern was one of the last two Mari in the world, and may actually be the last if Alyssum had succumbed to her injuries. She and Fern were the only ones in all the world that completely alone.

Ling reached out and wrapped her fingers around Fern’s hand. She didn’t remember anything about this woman, but she did feel a kinship with her nevertheless. An odd sort of one, based entirely on words she didn’t remember writing in a book she never remembered seeing before, but it was there.

“Where were you afraid I’d land when I fell in and why did you say finding the dragon wouldn’t be easy?”

She started drawing waves in the sand with her finger and I got the distinct impression she was doing it to avoid looking at me. “Honestly Charlie, I wasn’t sure where you’d land. It’s unpredictable when you don’t jump on purpose. You could end up anywhere the people you’ve met have been. You’re a mental patient. Can you imagine the sections of Dream some patients might inhabit?” Her finger stopped drawing mid-wave. “Trust me boy. There are Dark places in the Dream World, places you should never go. Venture too far into them and you risk losing a part of yourself to the Darkness.”

I was really getting tired of the cryptic shit. “Great. Thanks for the vague ominous warning. I was afraid you might give me an actual answer for a second there.”

“I’ve already said too much.” Even at a whisper there was a waver to her voice. “Just thank me for keeping you safe and jump back into the Water.”

“I don’t know which world I find you more annoying in.” It wasn’t the nicest thing to say to the one person who understood me but I said it out of frustration and maybe a little out of fear.

Nellie was about to snarl something back, but the leaves of some bushes just off the beach started rustling and I hopped to my feet to get a better look. “Something’s over there.”

Nellie stood up with a weary sigh and as she turned toward the bushes I saw the scars. Large deep identical scars marring the flesh on both of her shoulder blades.

I took a step closer to her. “What happened to your back?”

She turned and gave me a hard shove toward the Water’s edge. “It’s time for you to go now Charlie.” It caught me by surprise and knocked me off balance, back into the surf and the icy Water pulled me back in.”

Check out this peek inside:

“If you say it again, I’ll stab you,” I said as I struggled to adjust the formal gown. The bulging bustle of fabric on my backside made my lower back itch, and my corset was too tight. A proper lady’s gown indeed, but I wondered how anyone who dressed in proper fashion got anything done. I touched the brim of my tiny top hat. It, along with my parasol, were the only pieces of the outfit I actually liked. Of course, the parasol had a feature that allowed me to slip the White Queen into the shaft to serve as a handle. Leave it to the Countess to think of that.

“All I said was that you look lovely. I hardly think that’s a stabbing offense.”

“Shows what you know,” I replied as I eyed him sidelong. He had changed into a fine suit and wore a black top hat. I both hated and loved being there with him. My conflicting emotions made me cranky.

“Tickets,” said a man standing just outside the door of the Crystal Palace.

“Good morning,” William said politely and handed the man our tickets.

The man stamped the date on the tickets then handed them back. Nodding, he motioned for us to enter.

Taking me gently by the arm, as a gentleman ought to do, William escorted me inside.

While the Crystal Palace’s ornate structure, made of glass and iron, towering several stories high was a sight to behold from the outside, nothing quite prepared me for the marvels inside.

As we entered, a cacophony of sounds reached our ears. The sweet melodies coming from a stand of self-playing harps, the screech of monkeys, the hum of machines, and the sounds of hundreds of voices rolled to our ears all at once.

The structure had been built around the tall ash trees that had stood in the park. They still stood standing tall in the middle of the structure. Fountains lined the center promenade. The crowd gasped and stepped back as a group from Africa passed on their way toward their display, lions on leashes walking in front of them. Not far behind them, a man wearing a straw hat jogged past pulling a rickshaw, two laughing—and elegantly dressed—ladies inside.

I gasped as a man flew overhead on wings made of lightweight material. To my great surprise, he flapped his wings, the metal of the clockwork bones and joints revealed when the sun overhead struck him just right.

William chuckled. “Shall we take it all in?”

Barely able to breathe, I nodded.

“Now, there is my Alice,” he said softly. “Her curious eyes open wide.”

I smiled. “It’s a wonderland.”

My 56 from the eBook.

I have never taken a drug that wasn’t prescribed; I have never smoked a cigarette; I have never been addicted to anything except the sight of my own blood and the pain that comes with it.

What nobody seems to understand is that this behavior is not the cause of the illness – it is the result of it.

Synopsis

Two young women, living centuries apart, both accused of madness, communicate across time to fight a common enemy… their doctors.

“It was the dog who found me.”

Such is the stark confession launching the harrowing scene that begins The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls as Emilie Autumn, a young musician on the verge of a bright career, attempts suicide by overdosing on the antipsychotics prescribed to treat her bipolar disorder. Upon being discovered, Emilie is revived and immediately incarcerated in a maximum-security psych ward, despite her protestations that she is not crazy, and can provide valid reasons for her actions if someone would only listen.

Treated as a criminal, heavily medicated, and stripped of all freedoms, Emilie is denied communication with the outside world, and falls prey to the unwelcome attentions of Dr. Sharp, head of the hospital’s psychiatry department. As Dr. Sharp grows more predatory by the day, Emilie begins a secret diary to document her terrifying experience, and to maintain her sanity in this environment that could surely drive anyone mad. But when Emilie opens her notebook to find a desperate letter from a young woman imprisoned within an insane asylum in Victorian England, and bearing her own name and description, a portal to another world is blasted wide open.

As these letters from the past continue to appear, Emilie escapes further into this mysterious alternate reality where sisterhoods are formed, romance between female inmates blossoms, striped wallpaper writhes with ghosts, and highly intellectual rats speak the Queen’s English.

But is it real? Or is Emilie truly as mad as she is constantly told she is?

The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls blurs harsh reality and magical historical fantasy whilst issuing a scathing critique of society’s treatment of women and the mental health care industry’s treatment of its patients, showing in the process that little has changed throughout the ages.

Welcome to the Asylum. Are you committed?

Genre: Fantasy / Post Apocalyptic

My Review

Wow. Talk about bringing out all of the feels. I could hardly catch my breath.

Nephilim have all but destroyed the planet and are hunting down the last pockets of humanity. Humans are hiding out below ground, slowly starving and all but out of hope. And a nasty manipulator is wreaking all kinds of havoc. A celestial war is brewing and there may be no one left to lay claim to the planet.

Kali and Tiamat. Tiamat and Kali. These star-crossed lovers have a place in my heart. I’m not big on romance. I don’t mind some in a book as long as its not the main focus. That said, I would gladly have read about these two character’s no matter what genre or world they were in. Reading about their love for each other was bliss and torture combined. When the author describes their longing for each other, I turned to mush. And as thrilling as it was to read about winged beings dueling in the sky like planes in a dogfight, it was just as thrilling to read about Tiamat and Kali. These two character’s have grown. They’ve endured so much adversity.

It was also fun to reunite with old character’s and meet some new ones. There was a certain someone who pinged my curiosity radar. Couldn’t put my finger on just what he was or what his role would be in the trials ahead.

And the story takes a huge turn, going somewhere I’d never have guessed. Having waited so long for this sequel in the trilogy, I couldn’t be happier with what I got. Whether laughing at, swooning over, or crying about things that occurred, it all felt so dang good.

Beyond Night

Genre:  Epic Fantasy /  Horror

Beyond Night front cover

My Review

Bigfoot, a Roman legion, Picts, wizards and bloody carnage. I knew I had to read this book. I’ve enjoyed Eric’s Bigfoot War Series and this is my first time reading something by Steven. I was curious how this author team would handle the disappearance of a Roman legion consisting of 5000 battle seasoned men.

They did an outstanding job, giving a fascinating historical account of the Roman invasion into Pict lands, spicing it up with some magic in the form of wizards, a weaver and a long dead Pict queen.

And let’s not forget Bigfoot. They are huge, mad with a lust for carnage and damn near unstoppable. When the slew of creatures attack the Roman’s its absolute chaos and this horror fan loved it.

There was a hitch in my reading pleasure though. It was hard going at the beginning. The sentences were oddly written. I’m guessing its written as the character’s would speak in their time. And commas often felt like they were in the wrong place, breaking the flow of the story for me. Once I got the hang of it, I was able to concentrate more on the story. My copy is an ARC so I have no idea if the published book has these same occurrences.

There’s so many agendas in play. Each side believes theirs is the right one and use any means necessary to win. Subterfuge, strategy, magic and blunt force all come into play as all move toward an epic battle.

Egad, this was one dark, vicious read, filled with heavy atmosphere. The writing was powerful and I easily visualized many scenes, my imagination fueled by movies like The 13th Warrior and The Centurian.

If you’re a fan of Bigfoot, Lovecraftian and historical horror, you’ll want to read this one.

Synopsis

A tale of action, adventure, heroism, horror and sorcery…

BEYOND NIGHT pulls back the veil of nearly two thousand years of jaded history. Come trod in the bloody footprints left by monsters, soldiers and wizards and behold what lies hidden BEYOND NIGHT itself.

It’s Bigfoot War mixed with Lovecraftian horror on the edge of the Roman Empire.

How could Rome lose a Legion? What could’ve happened to blot out the existence of over five thousand men not only form history but the Earth itself?

As the Legion moves north to engage the forces of Pictdom, a dark horror emerges from the bowels of the Earth. Thought to be random attacks by hulking monsters, Decurion August soon learns a dire truth, that these bloody events are directed by opposing the wizards of the Picts. While one side assembles all tribes in a confederated army to battle the Legion, the other pulls these Greyman beasts from the depths of the Earth.

August fights not only these creatures and workers of magicks, but internal passions in the Legion itself.

Girl Divided
by Willow Rose
Genre: Post-Apocalyptic Fantasy

They think she’s a monster, but she’s their only hope…

In a divided nation, 14-year-old Jetta belongs nowhere. Her face is
split right down the middle: half-black and half-white. The non-white
residents of her New Orleans camp call her a demon. The white
oppressors who took over during the 2nd American Civil War have
called her much worse…
After years as an outcast, Jetta uncovers her true heritage as the daughter
of an African storm god and a Finnish death goddess. As she attempts
to harness her terrible new abilities to turn the tide in the war,
trouble comes to those she tries to help. Only Jetta has the power to
heal her divided homeland… or destroy everything in her path…
Girl Divided is a post-apocalyptic sci-fi novel infused
with magical forces. If you like immersive worlds, strong characters,
and a tale that reads like Neil Gaiman and Stephen King combined,
then you’ll love Willow Rose’s provocative story.

The One Apart
by Justine Avery
Genre:Fantasy, Supernatural Thriller
Only one obstacle stands in his
way of enjoying a normal life. He remembers—every life he’s lived
before.
Tres is about to be born… with the
biggest burden any has ever had to bear. He is beginning again—as
an ageless adult trapped in an infant body.
He and his teenage mother face life
filled with extraordinary challenges as they strive to protect,
nurture, and hide how truly different he is. But Tres alone must
solve the greatest mystery of all: who is he? The answer is linked to
the one question he’s too afraid to ask: why am I?
In his quest, Tres discovers that all
is considerably more interconnected and dynamic than he could ever
imagine—and fraught with far more danger. He cannot hide from the
unseen threat stalking him since his birth.
Life as he knows it—as all know it—is
in peril. And Tres is the only one aware.
Justine Avery is
an award-winning author of stories large and small for all.
Born in the American Midwest and raised all over the world, she is
inherently an explorer, duly fascinated by everything around her and
excitedly noting the stories that abound all around. As an avid
reader of all genres, she weaves her own stories among them all. She
has a predilection for writing speculative fiction and story twists
and surprises she can’t even predict herself.
Avery has either
lived in or explored all 50 states of the union, over 36 countries,
and all but one continent; she lost count after moving 30-some times
before the age of 20. She’s intentionally jumped out of
airplanes and off the highest bungee jump in New Zealand, scuba dived
unintentionally with sharks, designed websites, intranets, and
technical manuals, bartered with indigenous Panamanians, welded
automobile frames, observed at the Bujinkan Hombu Dojo in Noba,
Japan, and masterminded prosperous internet businesses—to name a
few adventures. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree that life has
never required, and at age 28, she sold everything she owned and quit
corporate life—and her final “job”—to freelance and travel
the world as she always dreamed of. And she’s never looked back.
 Aside from
her native English, Avery speaks a bit of Japanese and a bit more
Spanish, her accent is an ever-evolving mixture of Midwestern
American with notes of the Deep South and indiscriminate British
vocabulary and rhythm, and she says “eh”—like the Kiwis, not
the Canadians. She currently lives near Los Angeles with her husband,
British film director Devon Avery, and their three adopted children:
Becks, Sam, and Lia. She writes from wherever her curiosity takes
her.
Avery loves to
connect with fellow readers and creatives, explorers and imaginers,
and cordially invites you to say “hello”—or konnichiwa.
