The Monster Man of Horror House

by Danny King

1771e-addtogoodreadsblack

Local oddball, John Coal is the town oddball. Old, crotchety, pungent and solitary, he lives in a scary old house that is almost as rundown as he and sees out his days shuffling around the streets harvesting his neighbours’ skips for scrap.

The local kids take great delight in plaguing him morning, noon and night but they’ve chosen the wrong old coot to mess with because John Coal is no ordinary man. He knows where the bodies are buried. He’s been to the outer limits. He is a keeper of dark secrets. Murder, monsters, demons and bi-polar vampires, he has seen them all and lived to tell the tale.

Now, if he is to rid himself of his woes he must dig into the deepest recesses of his past and use these terrible experiences to convince his tormentors he’s not just an old man to be pushed around.

He is John Coal – the Monster Man of Horror House.

 Spooky Short Stories

by Kathryn Meyer Griffith

17311425

1771e-addtogoodreadsblack

Four contemporary spooky short stories:

Ghost Brother…
So what happens after you die? Do you go to heaven, or hell? Or do you go to a special place fashioned just for you based on the life you’d lived in the real world? Based on how you treated people? What you did to them?
And do ghosts exist? Do they roam the earth and plague the living, persuade them to do things they shouldn’t do?
Two brothers and their tale follow; their journey through life and death.
Do you believe in ghosts? Some do.

Running with the Train…
Sarah has always been lonely. Searching for a love she’s begun to believe will never come. Her family and friends depend, need her…but they can’t give her what she wants. True, eternal love. Like the wolves have.
So she goes on an adventure of a lifetime to the Grand Canyon; rides the train from Williams to the South Rim and sees these huge wolves running alongside in the evening twilight; scurrying unbelievably below on the Canyon’s ledges among the trees. She’s told there are no wolves but she hears their haunting cries. No one else sees or hears them. Just her.
Has her loneliness made her crazy?

The Banshee and the Witch…
What would you do to live forever, stay young forever? To find true love again?
And if you were a white witch with the magical powers to make it happen…and the secret of how to do it, would you?
So when the banshee comes calling for you one rainy dark night you’ll do what you have to do to get what you desire the most. More time.

Too Close to the Edge…
Artist Penelope had been looking forward to going with her husband, sister and brother-in-law to see the Grand Canyon…even though she was terrified of heights and, when she got there, couldn’t bear to get too close to the edge. She watched people balancing on one foot, acting foolish, taking photos, oblivious of the death waiting below them. It scared her.
Especially when a woman relates a story of a small child that fell into the Canyon the day before. Over the edge.
Then she sees a young girl go over the rim and no one will believe her.
For there was no child that had died–that day anyway.
Was she seeing things that weren’t there, or was there another explanation?

Serving Spirits

cfe8d-am

Hunker down for a long night during a brutal hurricane with Natalie and Mitch Whitley. Which one of them will survive the night may depend on a father’s love.

This story was originally published as part of my collection TOES UP and is intended for adults only.

My Review

It was a dark and stormy… Just kidding. But it really was!

Hurricane Gwendolyn is battering the mansion. Natalie Whitley gets through it the howling winds and crash of tress falling by drowning it out with some Metallica. That and a Stoli and cranberry juice cocktail her husband mixed for her.

As the storm beats at the doors and windows, Natalie wishes she were in Vegas. But the mansion should be able to withstand the hurricane. It’s just a matter of waiting for it to pass.

I’ve been through my share of hurricanes and it always seems the worst of the storm occurs at night. All that crashing and howling and loud bumps makes for a long and scary night. Then the power goes out and it really gets bad.

The author sets the mood for you and all you can do is hang on.

You have a great cast of characters.  Seth, Natalie’s father, is a famous horror writer and is traveling abroad, researching his next big hit. Natalie is the apple of her father’s eye.

Mitch, the husband, is everything Natalie’s father doesn’t want for his daughter and his suspicions are soon confirmed.

A large package arrives at the mansion. Seth is always sending Natalie odd finds. This one is beyond odd and quite grotesque.

You’re going to love what’s in the crate. From here on, Natalie has to fear what’s in the mansion as much as the storm outside.

Once I knew what was in the crate, I had an idea where this story was going. That doesn’t mean I didn’t relish every word getting there.

Adam infuses suspense, outrage, and terror in stunning doses. While Serving Spirits is a short read, it feels a lot longer while you’re experiencing it.

Looking for something scary for a dark and stormy night. Or a quiet one. I recommend Serving Spirits.

Way Out Of Here

17415558

Meet Gordon Delanolan. Just call him Nolan, everyone else does. Nolan is bored with life and in dire need of adventure. The only problem is that he has done everything, and there doesn’t seem to be anything else left to add spice to his existence.

Then one night Nolan is shocked and terrified to hear a disembodied voice coming from his navel. Reality, he finds, is much more tenuous than he at first believed.

At first he thinks he may be going insane, but perhaps he has found the way out of his jaded existence afterall.

This short story was originally published as BELLY BUTTON WINDOW, but I have elected to release it under its original title with a modified cover.
It will still be available in the previous format as part of the Light Brothers’ short story collection THE CORPUS CORRUPTUM.

13086449

Adam Light : “This is my debut published short story. People who have read it compare it to “a lost episode of the Twilight Zone”. Fast paced and surprising; this is a tale of a man experiencing a most unusual, and terrible, sort of day. Fans of suspense, quick and compelling reads, or interested in checking out a fresh author should give it a try. I think you will really enjoy this.”

I have always loved the written word. I fell in love at an early age and was fortunate enough to have a family that was in love with books. You could say I was nurtured on the language, and as I grow older I realize more and more that there are no boundaries to the impact words can have on everything.
I have been publishing my own stories for a couple of years now, and am inching my way towards the completion of a first novel. Until I finish that project, I will likely continue to pop out short stories here and there, and I am proud to say I just published a collection of short stories titled TOES UP, which contains one brand new story unavailable anywhere else, and five previously released titles.

Thanks to all who have read and reviewed my work, giving an unknown author such as myself a chance to unleash my madness upon you.
There is plenty more to come.

I’ve been remiss lately and missed several of my Freakin Fridays posts.

I’m making up for that with two horror reviews.

Edward Lorn’s Cruelty is a serial novel written in ten episodes, releasing a new one each month.

One thing I always look for in a book is the cover art. It has to ‘speak to me.’

Edward Lorn has some spectacular covers.

The covers for Cruelty were created by Elderlemon Designs.

 They do fantastic work.

Here’s their website addy: http://www.elderlemondesign.com/

Now, on to Cruelty.

I hope you’re ready for this!

Cruelty: Episode 1

Cruelty (Episode #1)

1771e-addtogoodreadsblack

My Review

William  wishes she’d point the gun another way. The strung out hooker wouldn’t get any money out of him if he was dead. The way she keeps screaming at him, it’s a wonder he can’t hear her, even though he’s deaf.

Too bad his car broke down. Now here they are. Walking down the road in the dead of night. Even if someone did come along, it’s doubtful they’d stop and offer them a ride. Especially with her waving that gun around.

Jennifer finally realizes she’s been screaming at a deaf guy and she bends over laughing. Then, she’s not. She’s gone.

Now, imagine yourself driving down the road. You’re distracted, it’s dark outside, and you glance away from the road for just a second.

Wham, you’ve hit something. Do you get out and walk over to see what it is? No way. It’s dark out there. But what if it’s a person. They could be still alive, even though it’s not likely. You plowed into it without touching your brakes.So, you open the door and go see. Oh jesus, it’s a woman, or what’s left of one.

Here’s where the story goes to the dark side. If you haven’t read any of Edward Lorn’s stories, I’ll warn you, they are gritty and in your face. Every character flaw is brought forth, bared to you in dramatic fashion. You don’t have to like them, but you will suffer with them.

The author is really good at getting you focused, really into a scene, and then. like a punch to the gut, he stops you in your tracks.

There it is. The what the…? moment when you wonder what you’ve got yourself into. Keep on reading. The real horror is waiting just around the corner.

A word about Cruelty. Yes it’s a 10 part serial novel, with a new episode releasing each month. Think about it like this. Do you have a series you love? Do you wait anxiously for the next book even though it could be months or even over a year before it’s released? With Cruelty, you know you’ll be getting a new episode in a month. Not such a long wait. Sure the ending leaves you hanging by your finger tips, but it’s well worth it. A few broken nails and bloody fingers is nothing.

Cruelty: Episode Two

18769241

1771e-addtogoodreadsblack

My Review

So here is Episode Two.

I thought I was prepared, but right from the get go. the author made me cringe. His description of Turtle, the druggie in withdrawal, made my face screw up in disgust. You know it’s good writing when you react physically to a scene.

But let’s push on.

William is still alive and kicking. I’d say that’s a miracle since the 600 lb doll thing likes to play with people. Like when a kid pulls the legs off a daddy-long-legs spider, it bends and twists and rends the bodies. It likes it best when they’re still alive. When it can hear them scream.

As he did in the first episode, Edward Lorn wields a bloody pen. By the time I got to the end, I was thinking, no more. Once the doll thing arrives on the scene again, the rest of the story is a runaway train. And the ending is so sudden I almost got whiplash.

For me, it’s a good thing  I have a couple of weeks until the next episode releases. Just how much can I take. This brief pause will give me time to recuperate. Then I’ll be saying, “Feed me Seymour.”

5 Stars

~~~~
And now for a brief word from the author.
Ten Acts of Cruelty
I started writing Cruelty with one thing in mind. I wanted to unsettle people. Not so much scare, but unnerve. Dolls disturb the hell out of me, so I added one into the mix. Then I made it 600 pounds, sentient, unstoppable, and sadistic. That’s a good Cruelty.
The novel has been split up into ten parts. Nine parts ranging between thirteen- to seventeen-thousand words, with a novella-length finale, which will come in around 40,000 words. Right now, the only way to get the book is to wait for each monthly installment. As of this time, I don’t plan on releasing an omnibus in electronic form, only in print. But that won’t be out until next Halloween, two months after the series concludes.
Cruelty is meant for fans of slasher films and television programs with continuing storylines (e.g. Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, The Walking Dead, and so on). This isn’t a sitcom. If you miss one episode you will find yourself in confusing territory.
You can buy your copy of Cruelty: Episode One and Two on Amazon.com, as well as Amazon’s international sites. If you own an ereader with a Kobo reading app, you can download the first episode for free at Kobo.com.
Thanks for having me, and I hope you enjoy Cruelty.
About  Edward Lorn and where to stalk him.
Image of Edward Lorn
Edward Lorn is an American horror author presently residing in the southeast United States. He enjoys storytelling, reading, and writing biographies in the third person. Once upon a time, during a session of show and tell, a seven-year-old Edward Lorn shared with his class that his baby brother had died over the weekend. His classmates, the teacher included, wept while he recounted the painful tragedy of having lost a sibling. Edward went home that day and found an irate mother waiting for him. Edward’s teacher had called to express her condolences. This was unfortunate, as Edward had never had a baby brother. With advice given to her by a frustrated teacher, Edward’s mother made him start writing all of his lies down. The rest, as they say, is history. Edward Lorn and his wife are raising two children, along with a handful of outside cats and a beagle named Dot. He remains a liar to this day. The only difference is, now he’s a useful one.
I am fascinated by sharks. All kinds of sharks. I’m not sure why, but I think it’s because of the danger they present along with their beauty.
Yes, sharks are beautiful.
Imagine a great white, weighing in at 2000 lbs. Now image that blown up to 46 – 59 feet long with 7 inch teeth and a mouth you can stand upright in!
megalodon photo: megalodon- 800px-Megalodon_scale1.png
That’s your megalodon, the prehistoric cousin of the great white shark.
The popular theory is their diet consisted mainly of whales. Just imagine a shark that big. We wouldn’t be much of an appetizer.
megalodon photo: megalodon megalodon.jpg
When Commander Jonas Taylor is ordered to make one more dive down into the  36,000 foot Challenger Deep, he knows he shouldn’t be piloting. He’s exhausted, shaky and his motor functions are impaired.
Left with no choice, he dives deep into the abyss.
What he doesn’t know is someone else is down there. They know the megalodons exist and want to bring them up to prove it.
Jonas and his crew dive smack dab into it when they encounter a raging megalodon, hell-bent on taking out it’s annoying competition.
The luminescent white image rushes towards them, growing to tremendous size, with a mouth that could swallow their mini sub whole. Jonas has one chance to make the right decision. The wrong one will land them right in the massive sharks jaws.
Having read the other four books in the Meg series, I was thrilled to see this short prequel. It gives you Jonas’s backstory about his situation at the beginning of the first book. You’ll read how he ended up with a tarnished reputation and ruined career.
You’ll also be meeting Megalodon up close.
I swear, I could almost feel the fear when these men first spotted the meg. I wouldn’t have wanted to be in that sub, no way!
I’ve heard a rumor there may be a movie based on the Meg series, maybe this year. I’ll be first in line.
If you haven’t read the Meg books, this is a great introduction.
For those of you who have, this is an excellent addition to feed your Meg fix.
I’m beginning to wonder if the rains will ever end.
Living on the Gulf Coast, I expect the daily afternoon torrential downpours. I do live in a tropical state, but this is getting ridiculous. It’s been raining for days and days.
What usually takes me about 16 minutes to drive home from work, took me 57 minutes.
It was a white knuckle drive as my wipers couldn’t keep the windshield clear and most of the roads I would use to get home were blocked off due to flooding.
I was doing about 10 miles an hour, creeping through rushing water over the roads. The water was so fast it had whitecaps and hit the fences on the side of the road and flew upwards.
I looked up at the sky thinking, “What’s next?”
Maybe it’ll rain cats and dogs!
raining cats and dogs photo: G 20_raining_cats_and_dogs_concept.png
So, okay. It didn’t really rain cats and dogs. A good thing too, because I wouldn’t know what to do with them all!
I was worried that my wicked cousins would come calling since there was so much water they could easily swim right to my doorstep.
Believe me, any visit from them is too soon!
evil mermaids photo: damn,thats soo hott! Mermaids-2.jpg
I was beginning to think I would have to worry about water spouts too.
A water-spout looks like a tornado over the water and can have winds up to 90 plus mph!
water spouts photo: water spouts waterspouts.jpg
They mostly fall apart as soon as they hit land, but with all of this rain, who knows!
Hopefully, the sun will return to dry up all of the water and I can bask in it’s warmth again.
I miss sitting out by the pool, reading and playing on my computer.
If I don’t get outside soon, I’ll go crazy, and I don’t want that!
I wonder if there is a dance you can do to make the rain go away? LOL
Cemetery Planet
goodreads-badge-add-plus
Imagine it. All alone on a planet far, far from home.
It’s a graveyard, the whole planet. And that’s all there is, you and the dead.
You think you are alone, but….you find you’re not.
The hologram you created for a companion doesn’t count. But she should.
She’s the one you’ll need when it comes calling.
I just had to read this book!
The premise is not that far-fetched.
Where will we put the dead in the years to come, when there is no more room to bury them.
This takes place 800 years in the future, when space travel is common, and for some, affordable.
You can come visit your loved ones, or just pay a fee to keep the grave maintained.
Kind of like a theme park for the dead.
That’s where the caretaker, Harvey Crane, comes in.
His job is to maintain the graves and keep the facility up and running, even though no one comes here anymore.
He takes a holographic image from a dead woman’s grave and enhances her so he’ll have someone to talk to. So he won’t feel so alone during his stint on the planet.
When things start going all weird and breaking down, he just thinks the equipment is in need of some maintenance.
But then he keeps seeing something streaking from gravestone to gravestone and he realizes he’s not alone. There’s something else, something monstrous here. And it wants him.
scary graveyard photo: graveyard 2qsm4id.gif
Even if there wasn’t something there, I would probably conjure something up in my half-crazed imagination.
No human contact and the only real voice you hear is your own. You could probably go for days without saying a word.
Who knows how you would handle that. What tricks your mind might play on you.
Except, it’s no trick this time!
The author took this awesome idea and ran with it. I read it in one sitting and had to go right out and get the next book in this series.
The ending was exciting and leads you to wonder, where is this series going next.
I look forward to finding out.
Vin Diesel is sexier than ever.
Don’t you love that rumbling voice and those eyes!
