THE EYES OF LOVE

By

Angelina Rose

BLURB:

After a tragic loss five years ago, Sally Overby becomes an Attorney in Atlanta. She convinces herself that all she’ll ever need again is her young son, David, and her life as an attorney. Until one day, Colin Dean barges back into her life and promptly blows her safe world apart, driving her crazy as only a guy she’d had a “school girl crush” on can.

Sally is wary to love deeply. Only, with every loving look Colin gives her plus every sweet kiss, as the attraction between them sparks, she can’t help but wonder if she’s met the one she should be with. And although Colin didn’t realize his life was going to change so quickly, amazingly, he isn’t the least bit interested in fighting that change. Instead, he’s gearing up for a different fight altogether. The one for Sally’s heart.

Will Colin be able to convince her that’s it safe to love him… and that forever isn’t really out of reach?

The Eyes of Love is a novella… so you can enjoy it in just one day!

Please welcome Angelina Rose!

Writing tips

Two Important Writing Tips: Pull Readers In and Write What You Know

Of course, writing is a highly personal craft and everyone does it differently, but these two tips are probably the most common, so let’s spend a little time discussing the best way to implement them.

How many times have you picked up a book and started it, only to put it down within the first few minutes? You really don’t want the book in question to be yours do you? You know your story is good, but if it begins with something along the lines of, “Ellie sighed and got out of bed. She’d had a full night’s sleep but she was still so tired. As she got dressed she thought of everything she had to do that day. Cleaning, laundry and grocery shopping…” Guess what? Ellie isn’t the only one who’s tired. I’m practically asleep just from the first few sentences! Punch up the beginning by adding dialog or some form of action to pull the reader in. For example: “I know, I know,” Ellie muttered as she slapped the snooze button. “I’m getting there.” Her dog Jasper looked at her from the foot of the bed with concerned eyes and she sighed. “Don’t look at me like that. It’s not your fault 8 hours doesn’t seem to be enough anymore.” See the difference? It’s a little easier to connect with her as a character when you’re not exhausted from a laundry list of complaints.

Now that you’re off and running with your strong beginning, you should implement the second tip right? You should write what you know! Well…maybe. If you want to write your autobiography then you don’t need to tweak this tip at all. Other subjects can be learned with the proper amount of research, so that isn’t really a problem either. However, if you want to write a ten-book long fantasy series about a race of moth-people this tip presents a problem, right? It actually applies more than you think. As the creator of the world in your story, you are the only one who truly knows it. You just have to make sure the laws of your world remain consistent in all of the books in your series. For example, if one of the things you know is the moth-people can’t get wet, make sure to remember that and avoid swimming scenes in later books.

“Hi there. I’m Gracie…” the waitress said as she put down a napkin and some silverware.

“Gracie. It’s me. Sally Overby,” she said grinning.

Gracie stopped in her tracks and squinted her eyes. “Sally? I can’t believe it! You’re stunning, honey!” she said reaching down and hugging her. “What are you doing in town?”

“Reunion. And to see Momma, of course.”

“I can’t get over how beautiful you are!”

“Thanks.”

“You were always a sweetheart of a person, but now your outside matches your inside.”

“That’s a nice way to look at it.”

“So, what have you been up to?”

“Let’s see… Became an attorney, got married, had a son, became a widow…”

“Oh, Sally, I’m so sorry! I remember that now. Your Momma told me a few years back. You’re still single?”

“Yep. But I have a date to the reunion tomorrow night, so I guess I’m officially back on the dating circuit now,” Sally said giggling.

“Date? Who with?”

“Colin Dean.”

Gracie started fanning herself. “Oh, girl, you scored on that one, huh?”

“I did. He’s a wonderful guy.”

My Review

Sally was the ugly duckling in highschool, always bullied. One girl was more vicious than the others and made her life a living hell.

But highschool doesn’t last forever, and Sally went on to college, getting her degree, passing the bar, and becoming a lawyer.

On top of that, she fell in love, got married, and had a son.

Now, it’s been five years since she lost her husband to an accident and she’s a single mother, just like her own mother was.

When the invitation to her class reunion arrives, she figures, why not. This ugly duckling has become a swan and it’s time to preen.

I’m sure you’ve been to at least one class reunion. It’s always fun to reunite with old friends and see how everyone has changed. Especially that sweetheart you had a crush on.

I think that was the most enjoyable part of The Eyes of Love. Well, except for when Sally runs into her old nemesis.

The newly kindled romance is endearing and the face off between Sally and the wicked witch of highschool is  very satisfying. Those years of bullying toughened her up and I liked how Sallie handled herself.

She’s tough but soft, courageous yet vulnerable. Someone you’d want in your corner.

This is a fun, heart-warming tale that’ll have you cheering for the good guys, and booing the bad ones.

4 Stars

Angelina Rose

eyes love  Author Photo

Angelina Rose has wanted to write ever since she could hold a pencil. The first daughter of immigrant parents, Angelina had her head buried in books, lost in a world of heroes, heroines and exotic places.

It was a shocking experience that jump-started Angelina’s author career.

“I awoke in the ICU… I had been unconscious for several days,” Angelina says.

In 2010, Angelina had a long stint in hospital following her involvement in a motor vehicle accident: the longest time off work (as a Registered Nurse), she’d ever had in her life!

It was then she took up pen and paper and started to write again, just as she had done when she was a child. She wrote four short fiction stories for young adults, entered them in several competitions, and managed to win three first prizes!

After happily dipping her toes into writing those short fiction stories for young adults, Angelina has now authored four books in a new “Mill Creek Crossing Romance” series… contemporary romance intended for adults.

The “Starting Over Series” is another contemporary romance series she wrote about a subject she knows well… nurses and their love life. At a recent reunion of her graduating class, she could not help but notice how the same girls would group together and laugh, chat, and even shed some tears over their lives since graduating. Many of the girls had divorced… so Angelina thought “what if a group of the nurses came up with a plan to meet in two years and have a new love story to share?” Then the first story in the series was born.

There is always a story running around in her head. A man with thick dark hair, gray-blue eyes, with an engaging smile and a quick wit… or a girl crying over a broken relationship. She finds herself talking to these characters during her day: when she’s doing dishes, or bathing babies at the hospital. These characters crop up on days at the beach or on walks through the neighborhood. This is how the stories start to grow.

Angelina’s mother was an author, so Angelina grew up with a love of words and stories. If she wasn’t writing a short story about something that took her fancy, her head was buried in books… reading, reading, reading, as her brother constantly told her…

When she’s not spending time with her goodlooking man, or quality time with her laptop, she’s working at the hospital, hanging out with her family and friends, or walking her two dogs around the neighborhood. Angelina spends as much time as she can traveling, then coming home and including some of those adventures in her stories.

Angelina really loves to hear from her readers and she invites you to connect with her on Facebook as she interacts daily with her readers there!

T.F. Walsh is here to tell us about writing Cloaked in Fur!

~~~~
Hi and thanks for having me on your blog. Today I want to chat about where I came up with the wolf names and terms I use in Cloaked in Fur.
One of the things I struggled with when writing ‘Cloaked in Fur’ was what the names of the various creatures in the story.  When I started writing, I originally called Daciana’s kind ‘Werewolves’ and the creature was a ‘Wolfwere’.  This became confusing not only for the people reading it, but for myself. I also felt that as the mythology of the story evolved, I wanted to avoid the term werewolf.  Werewolves have so much pre-existing mythos, with certain expectations, that I wanted to create unique terms to allow the readers to keep an open mind when learning about Daciana and her pack.
I eventually decided to call Daciana’s kind ‘Wulfkin’.  Wulf was derived for the Germanic term for wolf and may hint at some of the origins of the pack which might be explored in later books. It is also a common element of names in the Germanic region, which could reveal a bit more about the people with that name.  And of course kin refers to family.
I also wanted to differentiate Daciana from the full blown ‘Wulfkin’ and therefore created the term ‘Moonwulf’.  Because Daciana is yet to perform the rite to become a Wulfkin, her change is still controlled by the moon.  So I use the Moonwulf to describe this condition.
Finally, I created the term ‘Dracwulf’ to explain the creature I had been calling Wolfweres.  The component Drac was derived from the Romanian word dracul, which refers to devil.  So I wanted a term that referred to the bestial nature creature.
OPENING OF CHAPTER 4
The phone’s strident ringing woke me up, and I glanced over at the bedside clock blazing
5:13 A.M. Too damn early for anything.
Tempted to dive back under the covers, I checked the caller ID: Connell. Crap. The previous night’s events came pouring back: me turning into a wulfkin outside the full moon, running with the pack all night, collecting my keys from the woods, and ditching Connell again. On top of that, I never retrieved the old books for the elixir. Double crap.
I pushed my legs over the edge of the bed, scrunched the sheet in my fist and answered the call. “Hi.”
“Where are you?” The panic in his voice turned my stomach.
“At home.”
“What happened to you last night?”
My throat dried up as my mind whirred with excuses. “I uncovered something in my research and got stuck into it, not realizing it was past midnight when I checked the clock. I didn’t want to wake you and went straight home. I’m sorry.”
“I suspected you wouldn’t come. Looks like I was right.”
“Come on, Connell, give me a break. I’m working on something majorly important.
When you’re on a case and spend nights in the office, I don’t give you shit about it.”
“That’s not what pisses me off. It’s that you never tell me anything. Send me a message if you’re going to be late or not turn up, anything to let me know what’s going on. It feels like you’re only staying with me on until something better comes along.”
“That’s not true. I only want you.”
Silence.
I lowered my head and stared at the dirt beneath my toenails from the previous night’s run.
“I don’t want to talk about this now,” he said. “We found two more bodies this morning. The victims were located on the opposite sides of the city.” He paused. “Why would a wolf bolt across the city after a kill? They attack in packs, don’t they?”
A shiver rippled down my spine, the possibility of two more dracwulf kills made me furious. There was no convincing myself the attacks weren’t related to the others; I felt the truth in my gut. Worse yet, I wondered whether the dracwulf was simply hungry or territorial, and Sandulf had to know. I flopped onto the bed and curled into a ball.
When I gave no response, Connell continued. “I need you to review the reports from the previous attacks today and visit the new scenes to see if you believe it’s the same animal.”
I cringed at the innocent wolves who could lose their lives over Sandulf’s stupidity.
“Your team can test the evidence and see if it’s the same predator without me.”
“We have limited testing resources in this country, so we need your expertise to move things along.”
The way he said “your” sounded full of contempt, and it pained me to hear him talk like that.
“The chief wants a hunting party issued this weekend, preferably with Romania’s Animal Research Institute’s approval. He’s already spoken with your boss, Vasile.”
I climbed up and paced the room, shaking my head. Typical Vasile to agree to anything the cops asked.
“If I could leave you out of this, I would, but I can’t. Trust me, I tried.”
“I appreciate that. Where should we meet?”
“Piaţa Square. Half an hour?”
“I can do that.”
He hung up.
A snarl ripped past my throat at the terrible start to the day. Who could blame Connell for being upset? I’d be livid if he kept avoiding me.
I threw on a pair of Levi’s, boots, and a gray hooded top. The bathroom mirror reflected gray wolf eyes from my recent transformation, and already the silvery color was fading into a darker shade. I pulled every strand of my nest-style hair into a ponytail and rushed outside into the morning twilight.
~~~~

I’m reading Cloaked in Fur right now.

I can’t do my review yet, since I’m not finished, but I can say that I’m really liking this moonwulf and her wulfkin pack.

The killings are brutal, the pack wants Daciana back, she wants Connell, and the dracwulf is still hungry.

I can’t wait to see what’s coming next as the fur flies!

Diagnose Your Dystopia!

Guest post by J.L. Bryan

Something’s not right with the world.  You know it, you can feel it, and you’re probably going to die because of it.  Congratulations, you’ve just discovered that you live in a nightmarish dystopian future!

The next question: what kind of dystopia?  If you’re going to live, you’ll need to know this stuff.  Fortunately, we’ve assembled a handy checklist to help you diagnose your dystopia.

Total Surveillance State: If they’re watching your every move, including your facial expressions and body language so they can read your thoughts, and eavesdropping on all your conversations…hey, you’re not paranoid, you just live in an Orwellian total surveillance state! Odds are, they’re trying to control all media and information, including changing past records to suit their ever-changing lies. There may be no escape, so your best bet is try and hook up with that hottie from work before the oppressors destroy your mind and soul.  Good luck!

Game Show-ocracy: If you find yourself cast into a game-show-to-the-death with a name like “The Running Man” or “The Hunger Games,” then you’ve entered a world where game shows keep the public complacent.  If you play the game right, you might just topple the evil rulers of your society, but you’ll have to break a few rules to succeed.  If you’re trapped in a game show-ocracy, my best advice is to contact Alex Trebek from Jeopardy!  That guy has all the answers.

Happy Dystopia: Hey, maybe things aren’t so bad.  Maybe in this Brave New World society, the rulers encourage sex, drugs, and other completely harmless entertainments to keep the population busy and content.  You can try to whip up a rebellion if you want, right after you take your happy pills, eat your chocolate, get a pedicure and a massage…maybe have a nap…is this really a dystopia?

The State of Weird Ideas:  Is everyone forced to wear pink bunny hats at all times?  Or perhaps the letter “Q” is forbidden by law?  Sounds like you live in a world where a completely loopy-fruits dictator has come to power!  Your best bet is to play along while it lasts, but if you really want to shake things up, try being even weirder than the law requires.

We hope that this short pamphlet has somewhat enhanced your chances of surviving through this unfortunate dystopian period, and living onto into the even more miserable dark age to come!

In the comments below, you could tell us what kind of dystopia you would prefer, or which kind you would most want to avoid.

Foreword

In 2009, I kissed my children goodbye and deployed to Iraq.

I thought deploying would be the hardest thing I’d ever do.

I was wrong.

Coming home from war is not an event, not a solitary moment on the parade field. I never knew what it would take to walk through my front door and become a mother after a year away.

This is my story of coming home from war. Of kissing my children and learning to be their mom again. Of taking command of my company and growing up from a smart-mouthed lieutenant to more thoughtful commander. Of being a wife at the end of the war.

A mom. A soldier. A writer. A wife.

If you’ve been following the journey thus far, thank you for joining me again. If you are reading it for the first time, I hope you enjoy.

Excerpt

Unprepared

December 27, 2009

When you get home from deployment, the Army sends you through all of the reintegration training. Some of it is worthwhile, a lot of it is a waste of time and even more is a check-the-block exercise. I understand the intent behind it, but frankly, I didn’t need or want most of it. There was, however, one class that I really got a lot out of and it was taught by the chaplains. They discussed reintegrating with your families and I paid attention because honestly, I’ve been worried about reuniting with my kids.

They talked about expectations and reactions and how you and they are different now than when you left home. I knew all this but I still paid attention. There was a lot of anticipation within me about seeing my kids and getting the family back together.

I thought I was prepared.

So when we’re in the middle of a busy rest stop in New Jersey last night and my youngest starts crying out of the blue, I wasn’t prepared to hear why she was upset. She had real, painful tears, the kind of crying that sounded like her little heart hurt. When I asked her what was wrong, she sobbed, “I don’t think you love me.”

It was not a fake cry. It wasn’t even a cry for attention. And I had no idea how to react. Instantly. I started crying. In the middle of a rest stop, with people wondering what the heck was going on, I was trying to get my oldest’s coat on her while trying to get my youngest to understand that I did love her and I had missed her.

My husband freaked out when he walked up and saw me and our youngest both in tears. My oldest rested her head on my shoulder and told me she knew I loved her. But none of that helped until I could make my youngest understand.

It was a brutal episode and one I did not expect. They tell you about the babies not knowing you or your grade school kids wanting to talk incessantly but nothing prepared me for my three year old’s confusion and true heartache.

It’s better today. She’s back to normal and so am I, but the pain from last night lingers. So today, I’m hugging both of them more than telling them I love them. I’d already been doing that but apparently, it wasn’t enough to make up for a year of no hugs and no close “I love you’s.” The web cam was good but it wasn’t enough.

I don’t know if I can ever make up to either of them being gone. I don’t know what else is coming.

This is an interview with author, Elijah Wald, from NPR news. In it, he speaks about narcotraficante music. For more information, check out his book; “Narcocorrido: A Journey into the Music of Drugs, Guns, and Guerrillas.” In the first full-length exploration of the contemporary and controversial Mexican corrido, award-winning author Elijah Wald blends a travel narrative with his search for the roots of this genre — a modern outlaw music that fuses the sensibilities of medieval ballads with the edgy grit of gangsta rap. From international superstars to rural singers documenting their local current events in the regions dominated by guerilla war, Wald visited these songwriters in their homes, exploring the heartland of the Mexican drug traffic and traveling to urban centers such as Los Angeles and Mexico City. The corrido genre is famous for its hard-bitten songs of drug traffickers and gunfights, and also functions as a sort of musical newspaper, singing of government corruption, the lives of immigrants in the United States, and the battles of the Zapatista rebellion in Chiapas. Though largely unknown to English speakers, corridos top the Latin charts and dominate radio playlists both in the United States and points south. Wald provides in-depth looks at the songwriters who have transformed groups like the popular Tigres del Norte into enduring superstars, as well as the younger artists who are carrying the corrido into the twenty-first century. In searching for the poetry and social protest behind the gaudy lyrics of powerful drug lords, Wald shows how popular music can remain the voice of a people, even in this modern world of globalization, electronic media, and gangsters who ship cocaine in 747s. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7zjyDGnDUXs&feature=share&list=LPaagCbB6fU_g This opened up a whole new world to me when I was doing research for my book. I knew a little about the gangster rap out of Los Angeles but not that Mexico had it’s own version and that singers were killed as well when they squared off against a rival gang. And yes, it does sound like polka music.

Premise:

Zoe Grayson is back in Lancaster House, ordered to bed rest for the duration of her unexpected pregnancy. Doctor Wade Channing, her overzealous psychiatrist, is living in Lancaster House, taking care of her, waiting on her, and tending to her every need. It seems to be the perfect arrangement.

There’s just one catch.

She has to tell him her story—everything that has happened in her life since the moment she escaped from Serenity Hills. It’s been quite an adventure to include renovating another home and a walk down the middle aisle.

But, that’s all over now. Nothing is real. It never was.

How did she end up in this miserable situation?

The Doctor: An
excerpt from Lancaster House
*If you missed
yesterday’s post which included an excerpt from The Middle Aisle using slang
from the nineteen-twenties, then put down your tea and slip out of this hidden sitting room back to icultgen. . .
Doctor Wade Channing
is the psychiatrist in the Lancaster House series. In writing him, I found
myself debating his personality traits. Should he by the stereotypical ‘evil
psychiatrist?’ Nah, to overdone. Should he fall I love with Zoe? Nah, to
unprofessional and the reader will lose all faith in him. Should he be a main
character or just someone Zoe rehearses her story to?
In the end, Doctor
Wade Channing becomes the kind, benevolent doctor who truly wants Zoe to see
the error in her ways. He really wants to help her realize her delusions. He
loves her, yes, but he loves her as his patient, not in a weird-creepy way.
Doctor Channing very much becomes a main character in that he is the person Zoe
fears, the person who has the power to take her life away from her and keep her
from Andre. That reason alone makes him the enemy. I consulted my
psychology-degreed daughter as I wrote Doctor Channing. How would he act in
this situation? What would he say? She helped me immensely. Otherwise I
wouldn’t have had a clue as to how to write him!
That being said,
here’s one of my favorite exchanges between Doctor Channing and Zoe:
Doctor
Channing rubbed his forehead in pain, his legs propped up on his desk. He let
out his breath as it whistled through the cracks between his teeth. He studied
her contemplatively. So far, he’d been completely unsuccessful in breaking down
Zoe’s belief in her story. He couldn’t even break off a chink in her armor and
he was frustrated. After sitting in silence for several minutes, Zoe finally
asked, “Don’t you have anything to say?”
“Do
you wish you could have saved your father, Zoe?”
“What
kind of a question is that?”
“Is
is true that he died in your arms?”
Zoe
visibly paled. “Yes,” she said almost inaudibly. “He had a heart attack right
before my very eyes. I held him while awaiting the ambulance. He was gone
before they even arrived. I’ve never felt so powerless in my life. I suddenly
knew nothing was in my control . . . nothing.”
“So
you created an immortal being, one that feels no pain, can never die, and never
leave you. He awaits you forever. All you have to do is go home and there he
is, waiting for you. It’s all very opportune, isn’t it, Zoe?”
Zoe
said nothing. Her eyes lowered and she stared at the ground.
Wade
knew he was on to something. He stayed completely calm, sitting in his casual
manner, yet he verbally attacked her, letting his words roll off his tongue as
they hit her with striking force. “You’re right, he’s the perfect man. A man
who scoffs at porn, a man who can only take intimacy so far, a man who sees the
sheer goodness in you, a man who loves to help you redecorate the house . . .”
With each statement, he didn’t hide the dripping sarcasm in his voice.
“Stop
it.” Zoe paled and her hands shook in her lap.
“A
man who would never dream of hurting you in any way, a man who loves to simply
look upon you day after day, a man who needs nothing as he doesn’t need to eat
or even sleep, a man who spontaneously gives you piggyback rides, a man who
puts you to sleep when life gets rough . . .” His words were thick with
disdain.
“Shut
up.” She was becoming defensive, tense.
He
was only just warming up. It was time for her to face reality. “A man who can
never cheat on you, a man who can never leave the house, a man who kills for
your honor, a man who can read your mind, a man filled with tender emotions, a
man who loves to simply touch you and nothing more, a man who no other woman is
after as you are the only one who can see him—it’s all very convenient,
wouldn’t you say, Zoe? What woman wouldn’t fall in love with such a paragon of
a man?”
The
only way he was aware of her reaction was the pronounced rise and fall of her
chest.
“You
know nothing,” she said through gritted teeth.
“I’d
say I hit the nail on the proverbial head. Andre is a combination of your
perfect father and what you wished Connor was, all rolled into one faultless,
handsome little package. Only everything is in your control. You say when,
where, and how. You say sit, stay, and roll over. Did you pat Andre on the head
and say, ‘good boy.’ Did you give him a treat for good behavior?”
 Zoe
shot to her feet and screamed at him, “Shut up!” The orderly was in the room
immediately and held a writhing Zoe in his strong arms. She struggled
frantically. “You know nothing about love, you cocky, little jerk!” And then to
the orderly, “Let go of me!” She turned on Wade again, “Go ahead, sit behind
your safe little desk like the coward you are. Who do you think you are? You have
no right to judge me! None!”
The
orderly took her away and as they walked down the hallway, her screams could be
heard throughout the hospital.
Wade
smiled, pleased with her reaction. He’d hit a nerve. She could rail at him all
day, as long as it got her thinking about her delusions and facing the cold,
hard truth.
He
wouldn’t give her something to help her sleep tonight. She needed to dwell on
it, sulk over it—brood in it.

Tabbruis…

Dark to Light

He woke up centuries ago on a rock in the barren desert by Mt. Sinai. Screaming in agony, his body was twisted, burnt and broken. Miraculously, it healed within a few hours. Nothing made sense; Tabbruis had no recollection of how he got there or even who he was. It was like his consciousness was wiped clean.

david-gandy-15 charmeine

A shepherd boy, named Joseph found and befriended him.

Tabbruis understood the boy’s language and could speak it with a perfect dialect.

Joseph showed every kindness a poor shepherd boy could. He gave Tabbruis water, food and even let him wear his colorful robe when the temperature dropped at night.

However, the food did not sit very well on Tabbruis’ stomach.

After nightfall on the third day, marauders stampeded the humble camp stealing the sheep, goats, and Joseph! They were surprised to see Tabbruis come out of the make shift tent. Intent to help his new friend, he took off the colorful robe and started to fight.

Joseph cried out, “Help me! My brothers mean to kill me!”

Just then a man on a horse knocked Tabbruis down and picked up the coat laughing at his achievement. He ordered the men to retreat.

david-gandy-Massimo-Pamparana-homotography-1 charmeine

Tabbruis was angry, and his blood boiled with vengeance. To his surprise, fangs poked through his gums making him shocked and senseless. The blood he tasted from the fangs fueled his anger. He ripped a man off his horse and tore through the skin with his bare hands. As the spray of the man’s jugular coated Tabbruis’ face, he could taste the blood, and it was nothing but exquisite to him. For sheer hunger, he leaned down and drank. The liquid ran over his tongue, and the lavish taste was sublime. Tabbruis pulled on the man’s blood until all of the life force was drained.

By then, the other marauders had left. He sat by the corpse with the sanguine liquid dripping down his jaw. With hunger, he relented to his base needs and cried out, “Blood! I need more…Blood!”

That night was the beginning of a dark age for Tabbruis. He began taking life at an enormous rate. His savagery was unparalleled. He travelled from the Sinai desert into the jungles of Africa on the trail of human blood. He found no matter what happened to him, he could not be killed. If he was injured in the battle to secure more blood, he eventually healed. His strength and speed were unbelievable. He could wrestle an elephant to the ground for play, walk, run, and swim great distances.

Tabbruis thought he was invincible!

*****

On a dark day, reckoning came in an instant when Tabbruis saw a young girl crying over her mother and father he slaughtered in his unrelenting thirst for blood. The pitiful sight made him realize what his barbarism was doing to not only the victims but to their families.

Never having a family, he hung his head and loathed his hunger. Now, this little girl had no one, just like he had no one. The village people rushed Tabbruis and began to beat him. He refused to protect himself. He saw the little girl being scooped up by an elderly villager.

tumblr_m5bejaDRBb1r93kc1o2_500 charmeine

A woman’s voice whispered in his ear to run. Tabbruis did not know who or what it was, but immediately escaped. The self-hatred he felt was overpowering. He began to rebuke himself, “Why am I like this? Why?”

Tabbruis turned and ran for days. When he reached the ocean, he swam until it had been days since he had taken a life. On the brink of death, he crawled from the shore and looked to the blue sky. With his emaciated and chapped lips, Tabbruis prayed, “God, I will never take a life again. I surrender to your will.”

Suddenly, he saw a lion which was surrounded in a bright light. The woman’s voice whispered in his ear, “Drink.” He rubbed his head thinking the light and voice was a dream. He slowly got up. With the last bit of strength in his famished body, Tabbruis ran after the lion. In ravenous hunger, he caught the lion, broke its neck, and drank the blood. His need and want was satisfied. From then on, he only fed from animals.

*****

For centuries after that, Tabbruis was a private individual. Solitude was best for him as blood raced in his brain when he was around humans. The scent of blood and the rush it gave him to pierce the jugular was exquisite. However, it was always with a price of a severe self-loathing and self-hatred. His determination to abstain was strong, and he vowed not to take another human life for the pleasure of their blood. He drank donated blood only when big game was unavailable to hunt.

“Why am I drawn to the United States, why the East Coast?” he muttered. Tabbruis had just killed a big stag taking all the life from it and sat back looking at the night sky. Like a star crashing into the Earth, he had an empty and lost feeling. He had been isolated for so long by choice; he was unsure what to think of his recent compulsion to venture out to the United States. He looked at the moon and roared a guttural, “Why?” Desperation overtook him again, which was an old friend and mumbled, “Where else do you want to go?”

Feeling unfocused, Tabbruis wandered until it was close to dawn. He needed a shower and change of clothes. With speed and accuracy, he found his car parked off US Interstate 80 in northwest New Jersey by the exit for Sparta. He looked around to make sure he was not being watched and walked up to his car. He took out of the passenger side a thin black leather jacket which he promptly put on over his blood-stained shirt. He cleaned his hands and face with a wet-nap, then kicked the mud and leaves from his shoes.

Tabbruis slid behind the wheel of his Dodge Charger SRT8 with a 6.4-liter Hemi V-8 engine. His muscle car roared to life with a push of the ignition button. He enjoyed the luxury and power of 465 horses under his hands driving down the open road. This car was a joy to drive, and he freely admitted to being attached to the Charger. He babied and took care of it. In his mind, European sports cars had nothing over his monster Charger with a Hemi.

Thousands of years being on Earth with superpowers and skill had made him independently wealthy. Usually, Tabbruis denied himself luxuries and ‘roughed it,’ as he would like to call it. Unlike power-hungry men of the Earth, he wanted to stay out of the spotlight. He had hidden money around the globe in all sorts of currency and commodities. Determined if he was going to be alone, he would have stability. However, he wanted to be far from suspicion and very much under the radar of governments and media.

Tabbruis saw a sign for a Baymont Inn ahead and a rest stop for gasoline. It was not the best place he ever stayed in, but the thought of taking a nice hot shower was appealing to him. Seldom did he sleep, but he liked to close his eyes and have the world go away. He rarely went out during the day and preferred the night. However, there was nothing stopping him from enjoying a nice sunny day if he wanted; he just liked the stillness and the tranquility of the night.

After check-in, Tabbruis went to his room. With a heavy sigh, he started to undress. He walked into the bathroom, turned on the shower, and closed the door to create a steam bath. While he was taking off his clothes, he looked in the mirror as it was fogging up.

*****

Suddenly, he saw a shadow of a woman’s face. At first, he was anxious. After reaching out with his senses, Tabbruis knew it was just an effect the steam had on the glass. It was beautiful, airy and calm which radiated a translucent quality. The woman’s face had eyes which were deep and dark. He felt them looking straight into his soul.

Tabbruis was extremely fascinated and strangely attracted to the face. His weariness overcame him as he reached out to touch it and dissipated into a powdery puff of steam. He wanted to see her again and chuckled, “You are losing it man.” However, an overwhelming wave of loneliness came rolling down on him.

The shower ran over his aching muscles, and the hot water made him feel better. Nevertheless, when Tabbruis got into bed, he started to think about the apparition in the steam and could not sleep. He studied her for hours with his eyes closed. Suddenly, he was lost in a dream watching the shadowy vision. “What do you want?” he asked.

She smiled at Tabbruis, and he began to feel a heat inside of him.

He reached out but could not touch her. “Who are you? Where are you?”

She was perfect, and peace emanated from her with a charming smile and deep brown eyes. Her gaze was sensual.

His desire went to a fever pitch. With a start, he awoke with his body covered in sweat. He yearned and ached to feel her skin in his hands. Tabbruis closed his eyes willing himself to continue dreaming, but he was not able to go back to sleep. In frustration, he growled out loud madly, “Who are you?”

*****

At sundown the next day, Tabbruis was getting ready to get back on the road. He looked out the window of the second floor of the hotel. Below, the cars were parked in their little lines of order. Above, the blazing sun was turning gold as it set on the horizon.

He wondered if going into the most populated city in the United States was best. An urge to go to New York City troubled him. He closed his eyes and sighed, “This is ridiculous. I should drive to JFK, and fly to Europe. I have to get out of here. I am going insane.”

David_Gandy_by_angel_in_side charmeine

When Tabbruis looked up once more at the sun, the face appeared in the clouds drifting around the setting sun. He could not believe it and wiped his eyes. He gripped the window seal. Not understanding the reason why this was happening, he questioned out loud, “What does this mean?” He knew Blood-Hunters were not the only supernatural race on Earth. “Why did you make me come here?” All of a sudden, she seemed frightened. His grip on the window seal increased and some drywall came loose in his hands. Her eyes were open with terror, and he wanted to reach her. His abdominal muscles tensed and body trembled. She was screaming, but he could not hear it. Desperately, he asked, “What are you trying to tell me? I will help you. Where are you?” Every cell in his body wanted to rescue and comfort her. In addition, his eyes were focused on her perfect beauty.

Within a minute, the sun disappeared, and so did she. He hung his head and felt utterly alone like he had for his whole existence on Earth. But it was a different kind of loneliness. Now, Tabbruis felt like he was half and not whole. He yearned for something else other than the want of blood. It was the need to protect, touch, and hold her in his hands. Now, he could not do without her. Tabbruis had to find…the face.

My Review

One thing I can tell you is Emily writes from the heart. I felt everything she intended for me to feel. Her love for her characters blooms from the pages.

Charmeine is innocent, sweet, and generous. Don’t let that fool ya though. She has a stubborn streak and plenty of courage and grit.

Her history is sad. She was found wandering the streets with no memory of who she was. She was sent to an orpanage and eventually earned a degree and became a teacher. She’s lived a quiet life until now.

Now someone wants to kill her, and a mysterious stranger, one who she immediately feels connected to, is offering his protection.

Tabbruis is the epitome of alpha male. Drop dead gorgeous and determined. He has a past similar to Charmeine’s in that he had no memory before he woke up lying on a rock. He has regained his memory and knows he is a Blood Hunter, requiring the drinking of blood to survive.

He spent a long time living on the dark side, but has since come to the light. The night he rescued Charmeine, he sensed another Blood Hunter getting ready to kill, but before he arrived at the scene he saw a flash of light. When he got there, the Blood Hunter was stunned and a woman lay on the ground. When her gaze tilted up to his, he was shocked. It was the face from his dreams, the one that’s been haunting him.

together they escape the hunter and Tabbruis persuades her to stay under his protection. He will have to tell her what she is if she’s to survive what’s coming. She is a light-bearer!

“They are opposite of our species. Their mission is to eradicate us as our mission is to eradicate them.” The Elders believe the Earth is ours and not to be shared.

“Light cannot have dark and dark cannot have light Tabbruis.”

Tabbruis is torn. He’s supposed to kill a light-bearer on site, but she’s the woman from his dreams, the one that’s stirred emotions and longings in him he’s never before experienced. Now that he’s found her, he can’t let her go.

Tabbruis closed his eyes and quietly screamed a curse, “Oh God! Why? Why did I meet this woman and never have a possibility of being with her?”

It seems like their love for each other happens in a heartbeat, but not really. Tabbruis was in love with Charmeine long before he met her and a shared dream reveals to her they’ve been connected in the past.

This is a sweet romance. They are both giddy in love, acting almost like teen-agers and puppy love. It’s the first time  either has  felt these feelings and their attraction is sizzling.

When you read this book, when you read this series, let yourself go. Escape into their world and believe.

If you were fated (created) to be together, wouldn’t it stand to reason you’re love and passion for each other would be immediate? Your souls would be mated. You would be the only one for each other, like magnets. Together they are as one essential being.

Charmeine is a wonderful beginning to the story of Charmeine and Tabbruis. You really need to read Mactus and Accendo to get all that Emily offers. The three books were intended to be one big book. The next two really ramp up the action and there are some characters, good and bad, that I can’t wait for you to meet!

Quotes I Loved

“You quiet me and stir my passion all at the same time. ~ Tabbruis

“What do you feel Tabbruis?” Tabbruis swallowed very hard and said, brushing his fingers over her hair, “Happiness, Charmeine.”

Four Stars for Charmeine. I’m a sucker for forever love!

Notes to Reviewers and Readers: First, the Blood-Hunter race or Elders have been on Earth for thousands of years. Because of this, they do not use contractions like I’m, don’t or can’t. They communicate in a more refined way because of their age.

Second, there are several OLD editions out in circulation of my books. Please leave a review on the current edition. Please feel free to contact me, Emily, at guido.emily@gmail.com to check the edition you have is the recent edition.

The cover art for this story is perfect. You know you’re in for a fun adventure before you even crack the book.

And now it’s time for my review of Eternal Island, Book One in The Eternal Series. This series is written by Ella Medler and Kristie S. Haigwood.

Eternal Island (Book 1 in the Eternal Series)

goodreads-badge-add-plus

Eternal Island – A place where vampires rule, witches play, danger lurks and dreams really do come true.

This arrogant, been there – done that, vampire thinks he’s seen it all and done it all. That is until he gazes into Rainey’s crystal ball.

She warned him, this is your one and only chance at love, at finding your soul-mate. Make sure you want this before you gaze upon her. There’ll be no going back. Your heart won’t allow it.

Abe doesn’t take her seriously. Rainey is his personal psychic witch. She’s been forecasting his future for a long time and never once has it been about anything good. So why should this be any different.

Then he gazes upon Ariana’s face. If his heart was still beating, it would explode from his chest. He’s stunned by the rush of feelings he’s having. He has to have her, can’t stand a second more without her. Now he understands Rainey’s warning. She’s right, there’s no going back.

Per Abe’s demand, Rainey goes to get Ariana and bring her back to the island.

Ariana has been in a coma for many weeks. Not able to cope with the news of her husband’s death, she fainted and never woke up.

She’s been moved to a mental hospital as she shows no signs of waking. Rainey arrives and uses her witchy powers to get past the staff and enters Ariana’s room. She sprinkles some powder on her face and waits.

Ariana awakens, at first confused. Where is she, why is she here and who is this stranger?

As Rainey pitches her mysterious promise of a new life, a new beginning on a magical island, Ariana is persuaded to go. Perhaps because of her painful memories, she accepts that the island is real.

I can tell you this, I had so much fun reading Eternal Island. The cast of characters couldn’t be better and I laughed, hard!

Abe is the High Vampire, the big kahuna of the island. A long time ago a vampire discovered the island and invited others to come there to escape the slayers. When witches were being burned, drowned, and hanged, the vampire invited them to the island also. It was mutually beneficial. The witches watched out for the vamps during the day and the vamps protected the witches by night. And the witches cast a spell to keep the island hidden.

This is a great premise. A secret island, witches and vamps working together!

Abe is a stickler for rules and suffers no nonsense. It’s hard for him to be so unsure of himself now that he’s found love. Upon knowing he’s about to come face to face with Ariana – “I love her and I’ve never even heard her voice. Do you know how that makes me feel? Vulnerable! I feel weak.”

I like when a vampire and a human fall in love. All through the story I’m wondering, will he want to change her, will she want to be changed? Keeps the mystery flowing.

Rainey is a psychic witch and has to make sure Abe doesn’t rush things and scare Ariana off. She needn’t have worried. Once Ariana gazes into Abe’s eyes, she’s enamored.

Her roommate Becky catches on quickly and thinks Ariana does protest too much.

“It’s not what you think, Becky. Honestly.” Becky made a face and stared back unblinking. “Okay, there’s no point in arguing with you anyway, is there?”

“Nope, I always win.”

A fact I liked: He enjoyed drinking alcohol for the simple reason that it was something different. A human doesn’t like to only eat pizza or cheeseburgers all the time and the same applied to Abe’s kind. Blood, although necessary to stay alive, got old, boring, after a while. His favorite drink was Jack Daniels, or an AB Negative girl.

Yikes! I’m AB Negative!

This part written about Abe made me crack up: Abe had been lying in bed for hours trying to count those damn sheep. Three hours later he decided to start shooting the sheep.

The book is full of fun, laugh out loud, moments. But there is also some yummy romance and a slew of characters, good and evil.

One vamp wants another one dead. The other vamp wants said vamp dead. Who will get who first?

Will Abe and Ariana finally be together?

Will Rainey see the mysterious Kade again?

Will Jonah stay out of trouble? Not likely!

There’s hi-jinx, romance and intrigue in Eternal Island. With so much going on, there’s never a dull moment.

If I was invited, I wouldn’t hesitate to visit! Five Stars for Eternal Island! I want more.

Now let’s hear from Ella and Kristie. They’re here to tell us how they met and how they became co-authors. Enjoy!

E: I’d been reading and reviewing indie books for a while, and in April last year I tripped over Kristie on twitter, or maybe facebook – one or the other. I offered to read and review Save My Soul for her. What a story! That book stood out head and shoulders above the rest. There were so many twists and turns, and Kristie has such a way to make you love her characters – I fell in love with pretty much every single one. Then I edited Forbidden Touch for her. Another winner. It’s so much easier to edit something you enjoy reading. And so our friendship blossomed. Kristie is such fun to talk to. I love her sense of humour.

K: Ella’s right, we met first on twitter, but with as broad as the twitterverse is, I didn’t realize we were already connected until Ella offered to review Save My Soul in one of the groups we are both members of on facebook. In turn, I read and reviewed her Martin Little, Resurrected (Loved it! Can’t wait for the sequel. She really has a way with humor and sarcasm, and those are two of my favorite tools I use in writing, as well). I was extremely surprised when I realized that the sequel wouldn’t be coming out for a while, that a thriller would be coming out first. WHAT? Okay, I’m not big on thrillers, but her first book was written so well, and she had edited and loved Forbidden Touch so much, that I had to give it a try. If I didn’t like it, I could just keep my mouth shut, right? Well, I couldn’t keep my mouth shut, because her voice in the novel made me look at thrillers in a whole new light. It got 5 stars from me, and I am anxious to get my hands on the next Hunter book. My, my, I am long-winded, what direction should I be taking this? Oh, right, Eternal Island. I wrote 3 of the epic Eternal novels two years before I even met Ella. They had been collecting dust, but they needed so much work to be publish worthy, that I stuck them on the back burner until I had a chance to get back to them, but with so many ideas for new novels crowding my head, I feared it would never happen. A thought came to me while driving one day, and I had to pull over so I could write her the email right then. I never even questioned it or thought that it wouldn’t work. I asked Ella to visit Eternal Island and see if she could work with me to make it any better. It is definitely a story that needs to be heard.

E: Yes, it was all Kristie’s idea. I was… well… surprised to say the least. I’d read good and bad things about co-authoring, but they all fizzled out of my mind simply because I felt so close to Kristie. I know we live thousands of miles apart, but in our hearts we feel as if we’ve lived our whole lives together, like sisters. Isn’t that right, Kristie?

K: Sisters? Yes, we are. If not by blood, then by souls. There wasn’t a doubt in my mind that we could make it work. 99.9% of the time our minds are on the same track and page. We… finish each other’s thoughts. “Why didn’t I think of that?” was said several times by the both of us.

E: I read the material as it was and loved it. I loved the idea of an island of the freaks, so to speak, a current-day kingdom with its own king and set of rules, and a down-to-earth approach to living in harmony with each other. Actually, a lot of so-called developed country governments would do well to read Eternal Island. That’s an idea. Shall we gift them some copies, Kristie?

K: That is the best idea I’ve ever heard, Ella. The planet would be so much better with the simple, yet strict, rules that the vampires set on Eternal Island. I would pack my bags and leave today if I could live there. It’s my dream escape, and I allow myself to visit every day.

E: I started working on Eternal Island, fitting it in amongst editing jobs, but then got interrupted by a holiday (I would have kept going but my family threatened to take away my laptop, and I wasn’t prepared to lose that!). I went back to work after my return and, helped by some delays in receiving some manuscripts for editing, got it finished at the beginning of September. Or so I thought. Kristie went back over it and made more changes, and then it came back to me, and back to Kristie – can’t remember quite how many goes we had to get it straight, but it was worth it. I don’t remember ever having so much fun playing with scenarios, thinking up smart retorts and working out which character should react which way. I firmly believe in strong, well-developed characters, and Kristie’s characterization is very good, so we had a good common point there.

K: I love my characters, even the secondary ones, so I made it a point to make them all as real as possible. Each of them have their quirks and problems, and each of them are unique in their own special way. I would say Jonah is my favorite to write, because he is so care-free and full of life. He loves being a vampire and he loves women and the chase to get them… all. lol. Which is your favorite, Ella? I think I might already know the answer, though. =D

E: I absolutely love Abe. He’s so clueless to start with. I can just visualize giving him a hug. And Jonah has got to be a close second. But… you know the last scene in the book? Get ready for some competition in the affection stakes. 😉

K: Oh, I know who you’re talking about. Lips are sealed. He is quite yummy, but I don’t want to spoil it for our readers. They must dig in and find out for themselves. 😉

E: I have to say there were a couple of scenes that stretched me. I only wrote satire and action thrillers before this one, and while there are a few action scenes in Eternal Island – and the pace is relentless, just as I like it (read it and you’ll see) – I never before had to get a… hmm… romantic scene right. Stop giggling, Kristie.

K: he he he he he Sorry. I can’t help it. You are so good at writing romance, I don’t know why you never tried it before. It all came natural to you. Flexible? I think so. You made the love scene, as well as all the other scenes better, and I don’t think I could have picked a better author to work with. You make magic happen. Mwah!

E: Stop that! You’re making me blush. There are a lot of awesome scenes in this story. Still, I think Eternal Immortality is going to be better. I feel it in my bones.

K: Right you are there, Ella. The cover says so much about the story, but still leaves the reader wondering what is beyond the door. Well, they will have to turn the pages to find out. Eternal Immortality ties up the loose ends of Eternal Island and lets other threads fray for Eternal Inception, book 3 of the Eternal series (Coming in the Fall, y’all!)

E: So, I guess what we’d like to say, in conclusion, is that if you feel it in your heart, if you’re comfortable with your on-line friends and have an awesome idea for a book, don’t let the miles get in the way. Writing a book together is easier than you think. If anything, it’s more fun, and there’s a better chance to keep each other going, no matter what else is going on in the world. I can’t wait to get back to work on the next book, and the next one, and the one after that, and so on.

K: Yep, you said it all! Thanks for having us, Laura. Sorry we didn’t let you talk much. We forget about the world around us when we get chatting. Thank you all so much for dropping in. I hope Eternal Island is a place you’d like to visit now. It’s a never ending story. It’s ETERNAL.

You ladies are awesome. I didn’t need to say a thing. Thanks you so much for stopping by.

About Ella Medler

Ella Medler

I live in Cornwall with my husband and our two teenage daughters. Together, we care for a large assortment of pets, some small enough to fit in a fish tank, and some capable of causing you significant injury on impact. I was born in Transylvania but got chucked out due to my inability to grow fangs and reluctance to sleep in coffins.

My first book, MARTIN LITTLE, RESURRECTED is a lighthearted fantasy novel full of action and unique takes on life. It’s total escapism. Heartened by positive reviews on my first book, I published BLOOD IS HEAVIER, an action thriller, which is an explosive and emotional struggle to save a father’s most treasured possession. ETERNAL ISLAND, a paranormal romance, is now live. I have co-written it with a brilliant American author, Kristie S. Haigwood. My next release is book two in the Hunter Series, BLOOD IS POWER, which should be out before the end of the year. In the pipeline are sequels for all of the above and a spin-off from Blood is Heavier – Tequila’s story.

Blood is Power (Book Two in the Hunter Series)

Martin Little Takes Epic Action (Book Two in the Martin Little Series)

Ever find it hard to talk about yourself? Yeah, I have that problem, too. I have been married to my soulmate for 8 years, who wouldn’t pick up a book unless promised that it was filled with pictures.  I have a beautiful 7 year old daughter, Riley, that talks too much and has a very vivid imagination. I have no clue where she got those traits. My step-son, Hayden, is 16 and very into football and hunting. I am a writer of paranormal suspense romance. If you enjoy a great love story with a massive amount of drama about angels, demons, ghosts, vampires, witches and fairy tale creatures brought to life through a twisted mind, then you might just enjoy reading my work.

Books by Kristie Haigwood

The amazing Ellis Vidler is one of my featured authors this month. Each Wednesday, I’ll be reviewing one of her fabulous books. There will be giveaways and guest posts, a whole lot of fun!

I’m going to start with Time of Death, her newest release.

Time of Death

.
While visiting near Charleston, South Carolina, an artist draws scenes of murder she can’t explain.
Alex. The artist. After a tree falls on her house, she joins her aunt on an unspoiled island, but something wakens her family psychic streak. She draws eerily accurate scenes of violence, but she knows nothing about them.
Connor. The prosecutor. He’s building a case against a drug lord one piece of evidence at a time. For him it’s personal, and he can’t risk a relationship with a witness, especially a psychic who’ll blow his case out of the water.
Rollins. The killer. He’s a cog in a much bigger wheel, and the witness to his acts of violence threatens his operation and his life. He’ll do anything to see that doesn’t happen.

.

Ooh, there are some really great characters in Time of Death. I think my favorite is Alex, no, Jax, no, Jelly. Oh, I love them all! Can’t wait for you to meet them.

Alex is clutzy, funny, a bit naive and like a momma bear when someone she cares about is threatened.

After a tree smashes in her roof, Alex comes to stay with her Aunt Isobel on Chicora Island. While up a tree taking photographs she sees something she shouldn’t. Nothing that stands out, just two men talking.

This scenario is very believable. Think about it. We go about our normal life seeing hundreds of things every day. You see two people talking, then it’s out of your mind.  When weird things start happening to you and those around you, when someone tries to kidnap or kill you, those two people don’t just pop instantly  into your mind. You’d be trying to rehash anything that stands out, not something so ordinary.

That’s why Alex can’t figure out why someone is trying to kill her.

Enter tall drink of water Prosecutor Connor Moran and his faithful companion Jax. He’s been after Rollins for a long time. He just hasn’t been able to pin anything on him. When he realizes that’s who’s after Alex, he does everything in his power to keep her alive. She’s a witness to a murder and doesn’t even realize it.

Rollins is a gangster personified. He kills without remorse, sometimes for the littlest things. If he’s after you, you better start praying. The people he sends don’t always kill you right away. Sometimes they like to play with you, like a cat does with a mouse. If they’re after you, they won’t stop coming until they get you. They’re after Alex and will mow down anyone standing in the way.

A story inside this story that I’d like to read more about is Isobel, Alex’s aunt. She made a big impression with her throwback hippy style. She’s very self-aware and intelligent and I’d like to get to know her better.

There are two characters that kind of stole the show and my heart. Jelly and Jax. Jelly is a giant of a man, with a simple mind. Jax is a three-legged retired military working dog. Both have handicaps and both shine from the pages. They added a special seasoning to the story.

There’s mystery, humor, murder, mayhem and some romance in Time of Death. Something for all of you. If you’re like me, after reading this book you’ll be wanting more. You won’t want to say goodbye.

Five Jax for Time of Death.

Please welcome Ellis!

We’ve had many dogs, some smart, some not so much, some gentle, some wild. But all were loving and wonderful companions. I consider dogs the greatest gift to mankind. Cats are good friends too, but not in the same way.  Dogs will lay down their lives for you. And they have a strong sense of a person who’s a threat. (We did have a cat who attacked a peeping Tom once, but we later found it was a man the cat hated anyway.)

When I was writing Time of Death, I felt it lacked something. After weeks of struggling with characters and the plot, I stumbled across Kevin Hanrahan’s blog about military working dogs. The dogs saved many lives and gave so much, often their own lives. That’s where I found the story of Anax and Marc. Read it. Both are heroes.

Anyway, Anax immediately leapt into my story. He added that one missing ingredient that brought it all to life. I fell for Jax, as I named him, and he took on his own personality and injected himself into many scenes. I found a picture of a German shepherd with the perfect expression. He’s photographer Sergey Kamshylin’s Zakhar, but he’s my Jax. Here’s Connor Moran, the prosecutor, explaining to Alex about his dog’s behavior around Merlin, her cat.

10944046_s JAX for ellis vidler review

“Jax?”

“My dog. He was a military service dog, very well trained, and he won’t bother Merlin. How does the cat feel about dogs?”

“He’s been around them, but he’ll be cautious.” Military? She hoped he was right that the dog was well trained. They’d be in someone else’s house, and she didn’t want to worry about Merlin. “Tell me about Jax. What kind is he?”

“German shepherd.”

Images of lunging, snarling dogs flew through her head. She straightened, wide awake now. “Go on.”

As if reading her mind, he said, “He was trained for explosive detection. He’s not an attack dog.” His eyes held a faraway look.

The other character I found especially interesting to write was Jelly Biggs, a retired heavyweight boxer who’s taken a few too many blows to the head. Here’s the bad guy watching Jelly, his bodyguard:

Movement caught his eye, and Rollins spotted the big man running across the sand. Jelly’s thoughts might tumble like lottery balls in a bin, but the former heavyweight still floats like a butterfly.

Thanks so much for the wonderful guest post Ellis.

Next Wednesday, Jan. 16th I’ll be reviewing Cold Comfort and hosting another giveaway!

After being dumped by her faithless fiancé, Claire Spencer has abandoned her dreams of a family of her own tucked neatly inside a picket fence. Instead, she’s plotting her solo course and settling for a quiet life as an independent Williamsburg shop owner. So how does she become a killer’s target?

Sometime security consultant Riley, burned out, disillusioned, and haunted by a young girl he couldn’t save, vows never to work with women again. But when a thug tries to kill the friend of a friend, the woman winds up in his arms, and all Riley’s plans go to hell. Knowing she’s in danger, he can’t walk away.

While dodging speeding cars, ducking bullets, and escaping through murky swamp waters, conventional Claire and freewheeling Riley struggle against their powerful chemistry—if she’s picket fences, he’s barbed wire.

Opposites do attract.

And on Wednesday, Jan. 23rd I’ll be reviewing Haunting Refrain and hosting yet another giveaway!

Good intentions go awry and a newly discovered psychic gift becomes life-threatening in Ellis Vidler’s debut, Haunting Refrain. After a psychometric photographer touches a headband and witnesses, in her mind’s eye, a missing coed’s murder, and a reporter hard up for news mentions the mystery vision, the girl’s killer embarks on a new homicidal mission: he’ll do anything to keep Kate McGuire from getting him caught.

Make sure you mark your calendar. You won’t want to miss these!

About the author and where to find her

Ellis Vidler

Ellis Vidler is a writer and editor. She and her guests talk about whatever comes to mind at her blog, http://theunpredictablemuse.blogspot.com Ellis’s new suspense novel, Time of Death, will be released November 18th. Artist Alex Jenrette shares the psychic streak that runs through the McGuire family. Just as it does her cousin Kate (Haunting Refrain), that ability gets her into trouble when she draws a scene she never imagined–murder. The killer she can’t identify wants to eliminate her, but maybe help from unlikely sources will come in time. Cold Comfort, suspense with romantic elements, is set in December during the long nights before the winter solstice.  Claire Spencer owns a Christmas shop in the charming town of Williamsburg, VA. Her quiet life is turned upside down when she becomes a killer’s target. Everything she believed is a lie, but the truth is cold comfort. Her first novel was Haunting Refrain, a romantic mystery set in South Carolina, now out on Kindle. It has a touch of paranormal, and reviewers described the characters as “delightful.” Ellis published The Peeper with Jim Christopher, a retired law enforcement officer. The Peeper is a police procedural/suspense novel set in the South Carolina upstate. Tea in the Afternoon is a collection of three short Southern stories, not her usual suspense stories. Ellis is a member of Sisters in Crime. Her home is in the South Carolina piedmont with her husband, two dogs, and a collection of wildlife that shows up for breakfast.

The Many Types of Love & How They Manifest in My Life.

A guest post by Bella Andre

You know that saying – kindness begets kindness? Well, I think love begets love, and the more love you have in your life – of all types – the more you learn about how to love yourself and others. The first kind of love you learn about, soon after you’re born, is love for your family. Then comes love for your classmates and friends, then various dates until you meet the one.

Family love is so important to me. My husband is incredibly supportive and we’re both equal partners in everything we do. Since I’ve always got a new book to write, I try to get my pages in while the kids are at school. But since my daily to-do list often spills over into the evening, I often take my MacBook Air into the living room and write or answer emails while my kids play on the carpet.

In fact, just at this very moment, my son is organizing his baseball cards on the floor while my daughter sits beside him and colors…and my fabulous husband cleans up the kitchen. (Hooray for men with cleaning skills!) I hope we’re creating a loving, nurturing environment so when my kids grow up and find partners of their own, they know what true love feels like.

Mary Sullivan is an example of love for her eight children, the talented siblings of the Sullivan series. Because she cares so much for them, and they care for each other, they’re unwilling to accept less than that level of devotion and affection in their partner. The family is also so intuitive, they learn to recognize when the others are in love.

In my latest release, Smith (COME A LITTLE BIT CLOSER) falls for his co-star’s sister. But Valentina is determined not to be the kind of woman who falls into bed with a sexy movie star. Only, when Smith’s family meets Valentina and Smith, they’re immediately able to see that Valentina is different than any other woman Smith has ever been with – and that Smith is happier because of her, too.
