A Short Story by Edward Lorn

My Review

Edward Lorn is a master of the short horror story. This one is no exception.

It’s not fit for man nor beast with a nor’easter raging outside, but Kay has no choice. She left her husband lying in a pool of blood, the frying pan she used to kill him sticking out of his face. Bullying her was one thing, but abusing her son, Tony, a boy with Down Syndrome, was not to be tolerated.

Now, on the road in the middle of the night in a blinding snow storm, Kay must find shelter from the storm when the car breaks down.

Her son had spotted a mailbox a ways back so they find it and follow a narrow path through the trees to a decrepit trailer.

But, before they can get to it, something rises from the snow. Something white, with glowing silver eyes and very sharp teeth and claws. Soon. more rise out of the snow and it’s a race to get to the trailer.

But will the trailer be protection from the screeching beasts outside?

Well, you know I can’t answer that question.

I’ll tell you this though. The beasts are determined to get inside and eat them up and the trailer has been long abandoned and falling apart.

The best thing about Edward’s short stories is his characters. He has this ability to flesh them out quickly. You feel you know them. But don’t get too attached to them. He’s not above knocking them off for a good scene.

Must not forget his creatures. They are all uniquely his own creations and bloody nasty too.

About Edward Lorn and where to stalk him.
Edward Lorn

Edward Lorn is an American horror author presently residing in the southeast United States. He enjoys storytelling, reading, and writing biographies in the third person. Once upon a time, during a session of show and tell, a seven-year-old Edward Lorn shared with his class that his baby brother had died over the weekend. His classmates, the teacher included, wept while he recounted the painful tragedy of having lost a sibling. Edward went home that day and found an irate mother waiting for him. Edward’s teacher had called to express her condolences. This was unfortunate, as Edward had never had a baby brother. With advice given to her by a frustrated teacher, Edward’s mother made him start writing all of his lies down. The rest, as they say, is history. Edward Lorn and his wife are raising two children, along with a handful of outside cats and a beagle named Dot. He remains a liar to this day. The only difference is, now he’s a useful one.

A Coloring and Activity Book

for Fighting the Living Dead

by Roger Ma

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My review

This is one for all zombie fans. And if you believe the zombie apocalypse will happen this is a must for your survival kit.

Roger Ma has included a bunch of survival tips, with pictures, to help you when the apocalypse happens. I learned fairly early on that I was not very prepared. I’d be an easy meal.

There are pages showing how to train, how to get in shape. It takes a lot of strength to take down a zombie.  And the agility skills are a must if you choose to dodge and run for it. That would be best for me. But he also includes these handy tips on how to take advantage of anything close to you and make it a weapon of opportunity. You’d be surprised what would slow down a or take down a zombie.

There’s even a section for parents on how to protect your children. You can become a momma bear in no time.

I’m saving the fun quizzes and the coloring for when The Walking Dead’s new season starts this month. I’ll need some visuals to get the colors right. I have my colored pencils sharpened and ready. And I’m curious how I’ll score on those quizzes too.

So, are you ready? You might think so. I suggest you add this to your survival kit and read it often. Your life may depend on it.

I won this book in a giveaway. Thanks to the tour host and Roger Ma.

I feel safer already!

Billy and Monster’s Golden Christmas

by David Chuka

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

This is a delightful story told with fun, colorful pictures.

Billy loves Christmas and everyone is coming to his house this year to celebrate.

The three things Billy loves most are:

Christmas dinner. That yummy stuffed turkey will the the trimmings and Grandma’s chocalicious desserts.

There’s also the fun games they play after dinner.

And, most special, the surprise present from his Uncle Leland each year.

This year Billy’s Uncle Leland gave him a golden pen knowing he likes to write comics.

Billy doesn’t think much of it and went to play hide and seek. A strange noise coming from the refrigerator makes him open it and reach inside. He keeps reaching until…Boom, he’s drawn into another world. There he meets the Monster family and shares their Christmas.

I applaud the author’s imagination and use of colorful, delightful pictures to tell this tale of Christmas and what it is really about.

What child wouldn’t enjoy this wonderful story of adventure, fun monsters, and the true meaning of Christmas. This is one you’ll enjoy sharing with your children each year.

And now for

Dewi and the Seeds of Doom

by Maggie Lyons

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

Join nosy Welsh dragon, Dewi, and his critter pals as they try to foil the plot of the dastardly Baron Doom.

If it wasn’t for Bomber, the rat that bounced of Dewi’s snout, and the Welsh dragons habit of sticking his nose into everything, the mad experiments of Baron Doom might never have been discovered. That would have been a terrible fate for all.

Readers young and old will enjoy this adventure. Dewi, the nosy Welsh dragon. Bomber(AKA Taffy the Teeth), the scaredy rat. Jones the huge and brilliant toad. Baron Doom from Castle Gloomsgor. These are just some of the characters you’ll encounter.

Will Dewi and his friends be able to save the rats trapped in the castle? Will they be able to stop the mad Baron before his mutated corm destroys all they hold dear?

Follow the wacky adventures as the gang races to do just that.

There are some ‘corny’ jokes that make you giggle, like this one.

“What do you get when you cross a boy and a rat?”

“A brat!”

This is a fun story for the young and the young at heart.

Here’s Author William Hage and his guest post about the covers for Porcelain.

Take it away William!

When my brother first showed me the original cover for Porcelain, I loved it. The one thing I knew it needed was a creepy doll on the cover and he delivered with that. I had no intention of changing the cover so I published the book on Amazon and Goodreads, and I was perfectly happy with the result. Maybe it was nepotism.

PorcelainCover50percent

A few days later I had contacted an Amazon top 100 horror author for another reason and sent him a copy (I’ll keep him nameless, because I don’t want him bombarded with messages). I was amazed that he actually read it. He had two criticisms. One was the editing, which wasn’t that huge of an issue to him. The cover, on the other hand, was. He said the cover looked unprofessional and, more importantly, it didn’t do the story justice. He said the story was ‘ultra creepy’ (super creepy, ultra creepy and uber creepy have all been used to describe the story) and the cover just didn’t deliver. The author suggested that I take a look at the top 100 books in the horror category on Amazon.

So I spent about an hour sifting through covers trying to get past the dozens of Stephen King books. What did I find? He was right. The cover really didn’t stand up comparatively. First, I noticed was that the title was really low on the visibility scale and I noticed that a lot of the covers on Amazon didn’t bother with fancy fonts. Some did, but many went with something much more basic. So the first change had to be making the text on the cover easier to read. Also, while I loved the doll image, I felt there was something missing then. When looking at the other covers, it felt like it was just taking up too much space on the cover. I still couldn’t afford a professional cover design, so I had to go back to brother with all of the criticisms and see if he would make some changes.

He loaded up Photoshop and tried some different things with the text, but unfortunately nothing really worked, then he tried making some changes to the doll and none of those really worked either. So we decided to just go back to the original image. It was then that we discovered that he forgot to save all of the original layers and alteration and the order they were done in. Basically, we couldn’t recreate it exactly.

At this time I saw the original picture of the doll and told him I though it looked pretty damn creepy on its own. We still had the problem of needing something else on the cover. I suggested somehow adding trees since the story starts and ends in the Pine Barrens. With that little information he went back to his computer. About half an hour later he said he was done. I really didn’t know what to expect, but I can honestly say I was not expecting what he showed me. I loved it. It looked professionally done and, now more so than ever, it really looked creepy. We were both pleased when we shared the cover with others and everyone thought it was great, and thought that it was really quite creepy. So that’s basically how we decided to change the cover and we can both agree that it was a really good decision. So I owe a debt to that nameless author who told me in not so many words that the cover sucked.

I’m also working on a new book which I plan to release in the next few months. It will probably be about 5 or 6 short stories. Then I have plans to release another short story collection that will have a wraparound story that sort of brings everything in the collection together. The wraparound will take place at the Whateley Bed & Breakfast featured in Porcelain.

Thanks so much for sharing William.

You can count me in when your stories are ready!

My Review

As a little girl, I wasn’t crazy about dolls. Sure, I had my barbies, but those bigger dolls, the ones that were almost actual size, with those creepy eyes, nope. I didn’t like them. It always felt they were watching me, their eyes following me. Now, all grown up, I still don’t like them.

I love horror, whether reading it or watching it. There are lots of movies about dolls. Let’s see. There’s all those Puppet Masters movies. How about Chuckie? Now, that’s one messed up doll. I would never have bought that for my kid. And now we have Annabelle. Have you seen The Conjuring? That doll was scary evil and wasn’t even the main plot in the movie.

I can go back much further. Ventriloquists. Their dolls come to life. Seen a few different takes on that idea.

So yes, the whole doll taking on a life of its own has been done before. It’s the author’s ability to take that and hone it to their own tale that reveals their talent and creativity. William didn’t disappoint me.

A weary traveler stops at a bed & breakfast for the night. It’s a rather lovely place with lots of collectibles on display.

The older woman who owns the place explains that each item has a history, it’s own story.

When the woman is pulled away from the conversation by a phone call and the guest kills time looking over the many objects, one in particular catches his eye.

A porcelain doll, quite lovely. His daughter would love it.

When the guest checks out in the morning, the doll travels with him to his condo. There it will wait until he visits his daughter.

But the doll won’t wait for long. It has quite a history and is ready to make a new one.

Once the doll began it’s rampage, I asked myself what I would do. Would I take it back where I got it from? I had a feeling either the old woman or the place wouldn’t be there anymore. Or, the doll would just return to get me so why bother. I’d just have to figure out how to deal with it.

I thought I saw the end coming. I was so wrong about that. Once the author revealed the dolls history, it went every which way but the way I thought it would.

The suspense was nail biting. If this were a movie, I’d be peeking through my fingers.

Scary good stuff.

My Review

I like it when I go into a book thinking I’m getting one thing, and I get something totally different. This happened when I began reading Welcome Home. I thought it was going to be a haunted house story.

The story is haunting but there are no actual ghosts. What’s there is something shadowing John Lester. It’s like when you see something out of the corner of your eye and when you turn to look, nothing is there. But this isn’t visual so much as it’s memories. They haunt his sleep, staying just out of reach of recall.

While this didn’t really scare me, it did surprise me and that’s always a good thing.

A good story for a rainy day.

My Review

Narine is scared. She’s been afraid all of her life. Of change, of people, of life, of everything.

Now she’s put her genius to work and built something to rid herself of that fear. Something she keeps in her basement. In a jar.

Ryan Notch does a great job of building the suspense, putting you in Narine’s shoes. One place I wouldn’t want to be.

Can you imagine a fear so strong, so palpable, it controls every aspect of your life? It’s a wonder Narine ever came out of her house.

But she did, and now she thinks she has the very thing to rid herself of that all consuming fear.

I just knew the author was going to creep me out. Fear is essential to our survival. It’s a warning from our brain, to beware, to be careful. I imagined all kinds of horrible scenarios because I didn’t have a healthy dose of fear to warn me.

Narine will discover that sometimes it’s good to be afraid. Wise to be afraid.

I had one of those ‘I knew it!’ moments when I read the ending. It was a zinger!

In this terrifying tale of an experiment gone wrong…

Narine Khosrovian is brilliant and beautiful and ever afraid of every little thing. To her the world is a horror, its wonders locked behind walls of anxiety. But might the fear have plans of its own once freed from her flesh?

A Science Fiction Horror Story

MY REVIEW

So here goes. I’m going to try to explain what this book did to me.

It kept me awake. It was late at night and I was falling asleep. Then that feeling of falling hit me and startled me awake. My first thought was about this book, what I thought was really happening. A dread for what was coming from far, far away. As I drifted towards sleep it happened again.

Not wanting to have it keep happening, I grabbed a cozy mystery by my bed and read from it for a while, finally falling asleep. The same thing happened the next night, so I put the book aside until the weekend so my work didn’t suffer from lack of sleep.

I finally finished the book. And I can’t tell you what it was that affected me so deeply. I’m not one to scare easily. And this book didn’t horrify me so much as fill me with dread, with a sense of impending doom.

Shaw is brought in to help some astronomers with a computer problem. They found a strange signal from an empty place in space but their computers can’t isolate it because they are all interconnected and way old.

black hole in space photo: Black Hole BlackPoolofDarkness.jpg

Shaw tracks the connections to a blank wall. Considering that it doesn’t lead out the other side he correctly deduces there is a room walled over. A forgotten room with a computer in it, receiving the signal. If they can get in there, they can start to try to understand it.

Down comes the wall and out comes the nightmares.

It all starts gradually. people start acting strange. All of the people who listened to that signal. Soon they start to die, but not by murder. Oh no, it’s worse than that.

Shaw feels responsible. He should never have hit that reply button on that stupid computer. Just what response did he send to the unknown? What hell had he unleashed?

It was coming. It would be here soon. What would happen then?

You’ll get a couple of different POVs but the main one is Shaw. His thoughts and his terror. But several other characters have crucial roles, adding to the suspense and drama. So many are flawed, and one is just plain nuts.

And there’s some technical jargon. It is a computer problem and contact from outer space that starts this whole thing, after all. I got most of it and could guess at the rest. And the thought of our universe ever expanding leaves me bewildered and awe struck. There’s so much out there. There has to be other sentient beings right? Why do we think we’re the only ones? Who’s to say we aren’t being watched, haven’t already been contacted? Who’s’ to say they want to be friends? See why I couldn’t get to sleep. Paranoia!

What got this all the way to 5 stars was the ending. It killed me. It just left me hanging out there. No answers to my nagging questions, no resolution, and no idea what was coming next. I’m worried about that! I know it sounds weird. I should be mad, I should knock off a star in the rating because of it. But that ending fit the mood of the whole book. And thank you, the next book is available so, while dreading it, I’m also looking forward to what comes next in the finale. I’m going to get my answers.

Synopsis

There is a place in the sky where there are no stars, no matter how deeply the astronomers gaze into it. Atop a lonely mountain stands a mighty telescope that turns towards the coordinates of this abyss nightly, as if drawn to it. Receiving its commands from a computer that hasn’t existed for twenty years.

Introverted network engineer Shaw is brought in to find out why.

All too soon he finds that while the night sky may be dark, it is not silent. A signal is coming from those coordinates. Creating a sound liquid and hypnotic with layers of data that suggest anything but randomness. A siren’s song that leads to horrific suicides in everyone who listens to it.

By the time Shaw realizes this, it’s too late to stop the signal he sent back into the night. A signal obviously received, for the abyss has begun to move.

And it’s moving towards us.

Jezebel

by Gordon A. Kessler

1771e-addtogoodreadsblack

My Review
.
He figured he’d die of old age. Not with his throat in the mouth of his beloved Jezebel, his beautiful coal-black Great Dane.
Jezebel lover her master. Until she didn’t. And now she’s loose in the streets, in the dark.
.
Something is wrong with the dogs. They are turning on their masters, ripping and tearing, no trace of man’s best friend left in them.
.
We think we’ve tamed the long ago wolf that crawled out of the dark to share man’s fire. But it’s still in there, and now it’s at the fore. The sweet dog you cuddle with could rip off your face.
.
What could be the cause?
It’s up to Animal Control Officer Tony Parker to get to the bottom of it as more people are savaged and more die.
.
As a dog lover, I was worried about this story. I knew that the dogs would have to be stopped, that some would have to be destroyed, and that’s a bitter pill to swallow. But the author knew what he was doing. He put you right in the character’s shoes as they fought to survive. There could be no tender feelings, only kill or be killed.
And the animal control officer, Parker, was still humane, he still didn’t want to kill any dogs he didn’t have to.
.
The cause of all this was very interesting. You won’t be able to guess until the author gives you enough clues. It’s really quite creative and adds it own terror to the tale.
.
pack of dogs attacking photo: Starlightway Woff Pack DSC00089.jpg
.
Imagine it. Every other house has at least one dog. We feed them, love them, trust them. What if they turned? What if that pet became a killing machine? And what if they travelled in packs? No one would be safe.
.
This book puts you there. There’s no mercy from the dogs. They will not stop. Many die. Add in a few sub plots and it gets disturbing on many levels. A tough story, written so you can handle it.

EBook Writing Made Simple focuses on the actual writing of eBook novels and how they can be crafted more effectively for the eBook novel reader rather than as a work written for the traditional publishing industry. How to Write a Novel–Storytelling, the Writer and the EBook Novel is his latest work, published especially with the beginning eBook novelist in mind.

Bones

The Complete Apocalypse Saga

MY REVIEW

I’m a huge fan of apocalyptic and dystopian stories so I knew right away I wanted to read this book. I also like it when there is an animal featured and Bones, the cadaver dog, has a starring role.

He isn’t your ordinary search and rescue dog. His first owner saw something feral in Bones and trained him accordingly. And this comes in handy for many of the survivors he encounters on his journeys.

There are three stories with a new threat to humanity in each one. From zombies that morph into something deadly strange, to rats and birds that mutate and hunt us, to  the most unlikely of threats, mans best friend.

You’ll follow Bones as he progresses through each story, hooking up with different groups of survivors and lending his canine smarts to each threat.

Now and then the dog encounters people who have heard of him and he even reunites with his beloved owner at one point. But as one disaster follows another, Bones travels further and further from home.

As the years go by and the world struggles to survive extinction, Bones has a new goal, one that will take all that he has if he’s to accomplish it.

As you follow Bones, you’ll meet all kinds of people, some good, some not so good. That’s to be expected when people are thrust into life or death situations.

Each story presents a different threat and while mother nature adds to that, it’s ultimately man’s stupidity that brings about their downfall.

I couldn’t choose a favorite story. Each one was as good as the next. The author took from nature, added in human culpability, and it all made sense. These things could happen.

There are many characters and I’m glad I didn’t get close to most of them, as this is an apocalypse and a lot of them don’t survive. One death in particular, a woman who survived through so much, was so horrific and sad. Be prepared for sudden death and it ain’t pretty. The author spares nothing in his descriptions, and, while I’m not the squeamish type, his ability to help you visualize the scenes will make you flinch.

I liked that the author put the prequel at the end of the book. I was still wanting more about Bones and the short story gave me some additional background and more of the hero dog.

5 STARS

Synopsis

When mankind is visited by Three Great Apocalypses, the only thing standing in their way is a feckless but loyal, easily distracted yet occasionally ferocious German shepherd named Bones, a one-time cadaver dog with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police. This is his amazing story.

In Bones, our hero must battle a plague of dangerous parasites that brings the dead back to life with the goal of destroying the planet. Shepherd finds Bones delivered to earthquake-devastated Los Angeles to hunt for survivors only to run afoul of armies of rage-driven rats and birds emerging from the rubble. And when mankind reaches its final hour and a pocket of surviving Indians are all that’s left of humanity, it falls on Bones to save the species before civilization is wiped out forever in Alpha.

Three Apocalyptic novellas of nature run amok, three interwoven stories that feature a German shepherd at the center of the things, three stories with so much action you might just explode reading them.

Includes prequel short story, Mongrel.

My Review

What first drew me to this book was the cover. Lovely and mysterious. Then I read it was about the ill-fated Donner Party and I got more curious. Then I read there was something evil stalking them. They had more to fear than freezing and starvation.

I wanted to know what it was.

Was it a yeti?

yeti movies photo: yeti yeti.jpg

Was it a Windigo?

wendigo photo: Wendigo wendigo.jpg

At only about 50 pages, it didn’t take me long to find out.

Even without a mysterious creature, this would be a chilling story. I’ve read the true reports of the fate of the Donner Party and the author has provided his own horrific account of the conditions and the ordeals the characters suffer through.

After reading about the frigid conditions, the slow starving of the children, the weakening of the men who struggled to provide shelter and food, I was glad I was here on the comfort of my couch. We take so many things for granted, and these people just wanted to survive, to save their families.

To also have to worry about the thing outside, sniffing around, scratching to get in and consume their bodies and souls only compounded the suspense.

I came away from this book wondering how I would have fared. Would I have given up?

Not only the freezing blizzard will chill you to the bone in this tale.

Synopsis

At the urging of Robert Teal, half-Cherokee John Nye, his pregnant wife Anna, and her father Ben Teal sell all their belongings to migrate to California. Along the way, they join with a wagon train heading the same way – the Donner Party.

After taking an unproven “short-cut” that leaves them a month behind, the emigrants are caught in the mountains by the freezing snows of an early winter.

Snowed in, unable to cross the divide, their food running out, and no relief in sight, the exhausted men, women and children of the Donner party settle in to survive.

But something else is out there. Something unseen. Something evil. And it’s stalking them.

John can deal with the elements. But can he save his family from starvation? Can he stop the demon of the frigid wastelands from taking his wife and child?

As food – and time – run out for the Donner party, John and Anna must make a decision. To stay, and starve with the others? Or attempt a harrowing trek out of the mountains – with a creature of myth on their trail?

There are some decisions you shouldn’t have to make.

My Review

The book cover really drew me in and I really wanted to read it after this read the blurb, so I grabbed it. I liked it from the opening passage. Made me think, “It was a dark and stormy night,” because it was. Creepy reading and very suspenseful.

If a stranger showed up at your door after dark, claims he knows you, and asks to come in, would you let him in? Not me, but Will and Betty did.

The old man, Bob Laurent, gave me the creeps. His insidious manipulation of Betty and his behind the back smirks at her husband, Will, set my teeth on edge. As they did Will’s. This guy was a liar and he was up to no good. But he seemed to have Betty under his spell.

At first she didn’t remember him, despite his claims he was friends with her late father, and his references to her calling him Uncle Bob. But then her memories started returning.

The night gets darker, the rain falls harder, and the devil dances.

What I enjoyed most about this book was the pacing. The author gives you a mystery right from the beginning, then he gives you some background on the characters, just enough to get you familiar with them, and then the discomfort creeps in like a cold mist, slowly.

At one point I thought the worst might be over, but the malevolence returned, creeping me out. And then I caught a little clue the author dropped in and had an idea where things might be going. I stayed up late, continuing to the end to see if I was right.

A good horror story that wraps itself around you and gives you a cold, ghostly hug.

 Synopsis

He arrives in darkness, in the middle of a violent downpour…an affable old man with tales to tell…

When Will and Betty Colby return to Betty’s hometown to settle her late father’s affairs and prepare his house for sale, they assume they’ll be faced with some cleaning, basic repairs and making runs to the local dump. Will also hopes it will afford Betty a chance to reflect on the difficult relationship she had with her father. But something more is happening in this quiet little town, in this dark old house at the end of this seemingly deserted dirt road.

In the middle of a rainstorm, a man calling himself Bob Laurent appears in the night on their doorstep, claiming to be an old family friend. He seems harmless enough, only Betty has no memory of him. Yet he knows everything about her, her father and their lives. He even knows intimate details about Will and his life. While the storm rages on, a cauldron of tension, suspicion and fear builds between the couple and the stranger, dragging Will and Betty to the very brink of madness.

A vile and unrelenting evil has returned to claim what was taken from it long ago, and all the demons of the past, present and probable future have come home to roost. Before the storm clears and the sun rises, Will and Betty Colby will come to know the horrifying truth.

My Review

Katlyn chooses the long road trip to California as an opportune time to tell her mother something important. Trapped in the car with miles to go, she’d have to listen.

Her mother does her best not to. She doesn’t want to hear it and when she’s forced to, her religious intolerance rears its ugly head. Hurtful thing are said.

Both women don’t back down and only a traffic jam stops the bickering.

What comes next is pure Edward Lorn. You may see the ending coming but he takes you on a twisted path to get there.

The mother may be firm in her belief but who is she to judge?

When I finished reading this story, I wore a wry grin, just like Katlyn.

My Review

When Peter first suffered a debilitating stroke that left him trapped in his body, his loving family was very supportive. But as time revealed he would never get better, he wouldn’t ever speak again, they placed him in a rehabilitation center, and their visits dwindled, leaving him to suffer alone as they moved on.

I can only imagine how bitter Peter must have become. Sure, he can’t communicate, but he’s still alive, still able to hear and see. How could his family just abandon him?

Soon, Peter has something else to worry about. He hears the screams, the snarls, the rending of limbs from bones coming from outside his room. He can only imagine what’s out there. He can hear the slaughter coming closer, moving from room to room.  And then the click of claws on linoleum stops outside his door. And the door starts to open.

The author gives you some horrific creatures. They like to play with their food and have a sadistic sense of humor. Which Peter soon discovers.

I wondered how I would feel. Lying there, unable to defend myself, unable to hide, as the beasts came calling. What fate would be the worst?

I have to say thank you to Edward. I rubbed my hands together in fiendish glee as he gave me just the ending I was hoping for.
