I pushed through the doors. They swat at my backside, squeaking with mischief. Eee-hee, eee-hee

Down in the workshop, the cold really packed a wallop. I rubbed my arms, stamped my feet. I rode my hand along the wall, searching for the light switch.

Tik…tek…tik

Fluorescent ceiling lamps sprung to life, duller, deader than usual. Instead of providing warm luminescence, they cast everything in an odd light, everything touched in artificial tints.

Immediately, the strong, familiar odor of ammonia enveloped me. But I couldn’t place the other smell, couldn’t describe it. If pressed, I suppose I’d catalog it somewhere between sweet and metallic. Sorta the way blood tastes when you prick your finger and suck on it. I’d never smelled anything like it before, not in Dad’s workshop or elsewhere.

An overriding smell rode in like fog. A strong, wrong odor that brought to mind mold and rot. A primal scent from a different time or place.

Ching! Ding! Ting-a-ling!

Impatient as a hungry baby, the bell-ringer called.

Click.

The walk-in refrigerator door handle swung up.

Chumpf!

The door released its seal and opened, just a few inches. A pale blue—hardly blue, more like moon-white—cone of light fell across the floor. A swirl of frost slivered out, twirled in the bare luminescence.

Ding! Ding! Ching! Ting-a-ling-aling

Cut off in mid-ring, the bell silenced. Everything hushed. No sound, not a peep, a tick, a drop. Just the silent shroud of death.

Slowly, I crept toward the refrigerator. Which didn’t make a lick of sense as I knew Hettie waited for me. There didn’t seem to be any real sense in maintaining silence either. But any noise—even my own—made me want to scream.

Above me, the light flickered off, on, then sizzled like bacon before settling on dark.

My hand gripped the handle. Arctic cold, I wrenched my hand back. I flagged it ‘till the stabbing needles of cold left. With my shoulder, I nudged the door. It pushed open half-way, then stopped. I followed with a mighty mule kick.

The door opened about as far as its hinges would allow.

I took a deep breath, held it. When I exhaled, I spouted out a frozen, visible vapor.

“Hettie?” I whispered.

I entered. To the left, the metal shelves on the wall were unoccupied. On the opposite side, all but one sat empty. A rumpled plastic cloth lay across the bottom shelf.

The eerie blue light had no visible source, but it provided ample light to see by. Maybe too much, considering.

“Hettie?” I repeated a little louder.

In the back of the unit, where Dad housed his supplies, a hanging shower curtain billowed out. Plastic crinkled. Something moved, fluid behind the curtain’s rippling waves. Not exactly flesh-colored, not much of anything.

Tinggg!

My heart urged me to turn back. Traitorous feet wouldn’t comply.

White snails of fingers crawled around the plastic and gripped it. Slowly, the curtain pulled back. Rusty rings on a rustier rod squealed screeeeeee.

Hettie stood exposed, naked. Except for the black “X” stitching up her innards. Varicose veins twined her legs. Toes exploded into corns the size of thumbs. Her scrubbing pad of hair stood up on end, a static raised brush of black and white.

Clouds had moved into her eyes, milkier than when I’d found her, yet intently focused on me. She showed that awful cavernous smile again. Barnacle-like teeth jabbed out of her gums.

Her lower jaw wobbled, then dropped ajar. Not an involuntary movement caused by gas either, the way sometimes happened to corpses. She gasped, a hissing radiator.

She took a doddering step toward me.

Ding!

The bell tied to her toe tolled.

Ding-a-ling!

Each step forward took great effort. A kind of ghostly arthritis hampered her dead limbs, encased them in cement. When she moved, wood cracked. More wood splintered, her body falling apart. She raised an arm. Dark veins spiraled around it, swimming upstream with determination. They rode toward her sagging bosom, traveled north up her neck, snaked beneath her chin, and set up house on her face.

And still she kept coming.

Tales from Harborsmouth Ivy Granger, Psychic Detective Urban Fantasy Collection

Tales from Harborsmouth (Ivy Granger, Psychic Detective #0.5,
#1.5, #2.5, #5.5) by E.J. Stevens.

My Review

I’ve been wanting to read this series and what better way to discover more about the characters than to read this collection.

Ivy Granger, a psychic detective with some Fae in her blood line, is one tough lady, and that’s without special training and weapons. She’s smart, snarky, and you don’t want to be on her bad side. And if she doesn’t set you straight the first attempt, her friend and sidekick, Jinx, will take out the trash.

These short stories were just what I needed to get me started on the series. What’s not to love. Paranormal Detectives, loony vampires, a sexy demon that sizzles, trolls, werecats, and so much more.

I have to say my favorite was Club Nexus. It’s comprised of Iced, Dusted, Jinxed and Demonized. It’s a particularly nasty case and you get each of the four character’s views on how it all went down. Bloody mayhem, death, and that sexy demon I mentioned earlier made these wickedly delicious for me.

Haven’t met Ivy Granger and her pals yet? Give this a go. You’ll be glad you did.

4 Stars

In Tales from Harborsmouth, readers get to delve deeper into
the award-winning world of Ivy Granger.

Ivy Granger is a psychic detective with ties to Harborsmouth’s
paranormal underworld. Too bad those ties tend to ensnare Ivy and
her friend Jinx in the Machiavellian schemes of the city’s teeming
population of bloodsucking vampires and psychotic faeries.

Tales from Harborsmouth is the first time the Ivy Granger
novellas are together in one collection and features two exclusive
short stories the series prequel Frostbite and the newest
Ivy Granger tale Thrill on Joysen Hill.

Featured in this collection:
• FROSTBITE (Ivy Granger #0.5)
• BLOOD AND MISTLETOE (Ivy Granger #1.5)
• CLUB NEXUS (Ivy Granger #2.5)
• THRILL ON JOYSEN HILL (Ivy Granger #5.5)

A detective’s job is to take note of the little things, the small
details that can break a case wide open, but having anthropomorphic
snot treat you like you smelled worse than a troll fart could give a

—Ivy Granger, Frostbite

If a faerie, a vampire, and a demon walk into a bar, you wait for

Of all the nightclubs, in all the cities, in all the world, the

A captivating paranormal romance, Moondance will keep you enthralled to the very last page.

~~~~~
Enjoy the excerpt
Darkness hung over the ground like a pall as Melissa stumbled blindly through the forest, lurching between shadowy trunks and swerving around bushes that seemed to materialize out of nowhere. Barbed branches clawed her face and arms, leaving angry welts in their wake. Protruding roots, intent on hindering her escape, sent her to her knees, leaving them scratched and bleeding. She gasped for breath as the blood pounded furiously in her ears while her chest burned with each breath. Sweat dripped down her forehead, covering her brow. Fear had slickened her palms, and her legs trembled as she careened between the trees. Behind her, her pursuer flew with seeming effortlessness over the ground, its enormous paws making no sound as it closed the gap between them. From the corner of her eye she saw the huge cat drawing alongside her, its bright green eyes shining eerily in the dark. Her foot caught the rough end of a stump, and she flung out her hands as she tumbled to the ground. The panther leaped toward her as her screams tore through the air.
Melissa jolted upright in her bed, her eyes wide as she searched her room in terror for the beast. Rigid fingers gripped the sheet, straining the fabric until it was close to ripping. Her heart hammered in her chest, the memory of reaching claws and hot breath on her neck still too close to dismiss. She loosened her hold on the sheet one aching finger at a time until it fell from her grip.
Harmless
by Katherine Dell
Genre: Paranormal Thriller
.
35434633
My Review
As much a sprititual journey as a thriller, Harmless intrigued me. A family tragedy sent Rachel spiraling out of control. She hopes the move to Hazelton will help her find closure and maybe find herself again.
When an innocent game between Rachel and her new friends releases a Wendigo, what they thought was a genie in a bottle turns out to be a dangerous path as they make their wishes to the mythical being.
I thought this was going to be a horror story. Mind you, it does kind of go there, but the psychological aspect makes it more of a thriller. Strange animal deaths and sightings build a disquieting atmosphere and the author’s twist on the Wendigo spirit kept the story moving forward and made this a much deeper read than I expected.
According to the legend, a price must be paid to rid the town of the Wendigo. A huge one. Wondering who would pay that price added to the  suspense and made the ending, though a cliff hanger, a fun surprise.
Synopsis
Be careful what you wish for.
After moving from Vancouver to isolated Hazelton, BC, high school senior Rachel Barnes hopes she’ll finally find closure and a sense of direction after tragedy has torn her family apart. When she and her friends discover the old spirit box her grandmother gave her, they see it as a chance to wish their troubles away. But the Great Spirits—deer, crow, bear, and the mythical wendigo—give away nothing for free.
So instead of worrying about fitting in and finding a boyfriend, Rachel finds herself in a race to control the malevolent spirit who’s taken up residence in Mason Allen, who she fears and craves in equal measure. What began as a harmless game forces Rachel to confront her past—and offers her a future she never imagined.
Step into a reality that is not as it seems in Book 1 of the Harmless series.
Nathan created for himself. She’s determined to marry him, and love has nothing to do
with it. His money is her primary target, and the fame and prestige attached to being
In an effort to evade her until he can figure out how to stop her, he hides at a safe
house he owns in New Orleans. One Saturday evening in NOLA, he decides to have
dinner in the city. He chooses a quiet little Italian bistro, never imagining this night
will change his life forever. The human woman who delivers his order isn’t a server,
but the restaurant’s sous chef, a beautiful ethnic woman possessing the most delicious
blood scent he’s ever encountered.
The moment Mia Peebles arrives at his table with his plate, tasting her becomes
an obsession. Mia wants nothing to do with him because of Nathan’s reputation as a
play havoc with his thinking.
Nathan finds a way to bring her into his life as his personal chef and quickly falls
in love with her. The trouble is Mia has no idea he’s a vampire because during the
I’m on vacation this week and having great fun just hanging around at home. I did pop onto my computer a little bit each day and discovered I had nothing scheduled for today. Good thing I have some back-up reviews written.
Skin And Bones is a fun paranormal romance and the first book in the Ever Chace Chronicles.
Let me tell ya about it.
Also wanted to mention this book is free right now. Check links at the bottom of the post for your copy!
Skin And Bones
The Ever Chase Chronicles #1
Genre: Paranormal / Romance / Mystery
My Review
I’m not one for the insta-love thing but I actually had a good experience with it in this book. I felt insta-love for  Derek and Ever and didn’t mind at all that they felt an instant connection to each other. Let me explain. It’s not a focal point in the book and later in the story you’ll find out more about why that happened.
Derek is called in for cases that have a paranormal element to them. When something starts killing teens, he’s lead on the case.
Dr. Ever Chase, though human, becomes involved n the investigation as a consultant. Soon enough it becomes apparent the killer wants her involved for reasons he hasn’t revealed.
As the two work together their attraction to each other grows. But they’ll have to wait to explore it later as more teens fall victim and they draw closer to the killer.
While I really like Derek and Ever, there are many other characters that stand out. You know how it is in shows like Criminal Minds and CSI? They have a team that’s been working closely together for some time and they become like a small family. Their personal lives bleed over into work and nothing is secret. The author included that in her story and all of players added flavor and intrigue.
I liked where this story went and it wasn’t easy to figure out who the bad guy was. And I had no clue why he was killing the teens until the connection was shown to me. The why is a key connection to Ever and ramps up the suspense nicely.
Drama, snarky humor, a light sizzle of romance, and a nasty villain. All the ingredients I like in a paranormal romance mystery. If that sounds good to you, I hope you give this a read. You’ll have fun.
Synopsis
Teens are turning up dead, and it will take a special team to catch a killer.
Derek Doyle has been a member of the Paranormal Investigations Team since the monsters revealed themselves to the world. Considering that he thinks a monster is needed to catch a monster, he’s definitely in the right place. As a lone wolf not used to letting many people in, neither man nor beast was prepared for the effect consultant Dr. Ever Chace has on them.
Growing up human in a world of supernatural creatures, Dr. Ever Chace has always felt a need to be special, to stand out. SNEAK PEEK:
STAR CROSSED by Koko Brown
“Don’t you have any decency?” he asked, lifting his gaze.
“I’m a pirate. Decency and modesty are distant memories. If they’d been instilled in me at all,” she scoffed. “Hard to find morality in a brothel.”
His gaze narrowed. “A brothel?”
“My mother was a gaggle of whores. I was one as well until I pledged my loyalty to Madame Shih.” She held out her hand and wiggled her fingers at him. “So you can rest assured you have nothing I have not seen before.”
He mulishly stood looking down at her, unyielding. Thinking she’d failed to sooth his ruffled feathers, she was mildly surprised when he unbuttoned his breeches. He slid the material down his legs, bending at the waist, giving her an enticing view of his back, the fluid cording of muscle evident even in the slanting shadows of the cabin. Lèsè bit the inside of her cheek. His large, powerful body was beautiful.
With irrepressible, flame-hot desire seeping into her veins, she second guessed her decision to shoot two hawks with one arrow. First and upmost, she wanted to gain his knowledge of foreign shipping routes, putting her one step closer to freedom.
As an added boon, his company would be a much needed distraction from the monotony of sea life, the loneliness of an empty bed. She didn’t need it to turn into a foolhardy venture which would be seen as treason. And she would not, she mused, shoving back her shoulders. After all she wasn’t some naïve virgin unaccustomed to a man’s company.
Body throbbing with awareness, she accepted his clothing. But not before she took a prolonged peek at the abnormally thick flesh between his legs. She lifted her gaze and caught him looking at her. She tried to diffuse the loss of oxygen in the room with an upward curl of her lips.
“Absolutely no sense of decorum,” he muttered, tan cheeks turning pink with embarrassment.
“No harm in looking,” she countered, pivoting on her bare feet. Chuckling, she padded across the room, his garments tucked under her arm. She opened the door then chucked them into the hall. As ordered, two buckets of hot water had been placed by the door.
Hoisting one of the steaming buckets into the air and then setting it on her head. Arms out stretched, crouching low, she pretended to walk a tight rope.
“I return bearing gifts,” she announced, a hint of playfulness coloring her tone.
Not exactly unbending, a shadow of a mile touched his lips.
Happy looked good on him. Delicious in fact. So delicious, she hungered for more of them.
With a dramatic flourish, she set the bowl in the washstand then went to retrieve the one she’d left in the hall. This one she set on the floor.
“This is nothing like the glorious soaking baths of Zhangzhou. Still, this should do the trick,” she reasoned, fingering her copper washing basin leaning against the wall. Resembling a sundial with a depth of exactly eight finger, the shallow pan scratched her yen for a bath.
“I may be a pirate but I like my luxuries,” she confessed. “I have clean linen rags, a couple of sponges from a trade with a fisherman and even a bar of soap from your fair England. I particularly like the lavender.” Unable to resist, she picked up one of the sleeves and sniffed. Feeling like she was talking to the wind, she glanced up.
He edged closer, practically towering over her. His eyes stole over the large basin like a man starving, and the pan had become a slow-roasted dungpo pork.
“Water’s warm?”
Seeing the fish on the hook, she nodded. “Not long from the coals.”
He didn’t say anything for the longest, but she imagined she could hear his smile.
“Wash rag and soap,” he finally requested.
With a smile, she handed him both. At the last minute he pulled his hand back.
“The catch?”
Lèsè opened her mouth to dissuade him of the notion but thought better of it. “I only require one thing—that I be allowed to watch.”
His gaze dropped to the washbasin and lingered. Again, a pregnant pause fell between them like a brick wall. “You may watch but not touch.”
“You’re no fun,” she pouted prettily yet not feeling the least bit put out. After all, he’d granted her a boon. Gloating, she spun about. Considering the bed held the most advantageous views, she ambled over to the day bed. With exaggerated purpose, she tucked her hands behind her head and crossed her feet at the ankles.
“Comfortable?” he groused.
“Quite,” she purred, digging her shoulder blades into the silk bedcovering.
“And the view is to your liking?”
“Far better than the bed,” she readily confessed. “As you Englishmen would say, “You cut a fine figure, Mr. Flynn. Very fine indeed.”
“Indecent—”
“Worse than a sailor on shore leave,” she smugly asserted.
“—immoral—”
“Never claimed to be a monk,” she countered with pride.
“—shameless—”
“My mother was a prostitute. The bar was set very low.”
“—corrupt—”
“I’ve seen too many pure souls starve and it’s not a pretty sight.”
“—licentious—”
Lèsè frowned. “I am not familiar with the word.”
“Lustful.” His eyes burned bright and it wasn’t anger.
“When I’m willing,” she pretended to look pensive as a yielding warmth flowed through. “It’s only with a select few. And you, Mr. Flynn, are definitively select.”
“Oh, joy. I live to be pleasing to my captive.”
His teasing jest restored her humor.
“Better I find you pleasing than distasteful.” She gave him an appreciative glance.
“It should rile me the way you eye me like a leg of succulent mutton,” he drawled. “And your openness is quite off putting…”
“But,” she coaxed. Interest piqued, Lèsè flipped onto her side.
He was obviously playing a game with her because he grinned as he changed the subject.
“You say the water is warm?”
“Right now, I wish it to be scalding,” she groused.
She lived for a good game of cat and mouse but only when she was the predator. Being the prey—particularly his prey—proved to be a discomforting, slippery slope especially when it played havoc with her insides.
Even when doing something as innocuous as simply filling the water basin with water, pleasure began to spread through her body. Or when he soaped his sponge, his thick strong fingers dripping with suds, her breath caught. And there was nothing she could do to stop it. She’d seen scores of men in various stages of undress. None of them—even lovers of her own choosing–made her body react like Christian Flynn.
Made by the gods. That’s what came to mind as she watched him begin his bath. Perfectly made, he’d been favored at birth. Every inch of him carved so beautifully, and so sinfully male she wanted to weep.
Her gaze devoured the lazy path of his hands. All that bare, beautiful alabaster skin and muscle covered in sudsy foam. Mouthwatering, she could taste every single bubble.
