“What kind of haunting are you talking about, Agent Crow? he asked. “Residual haunting, where the same traumatic event occurs over and over again? Or are you referring to intelligent or active haunting, where the ghosts actually partake in life?”

“Either,” Crow said, shrugging.  “I’m curious.”

He leaned across the table, his casual manner gone. “Kelsey, I know damned well that you see what others don’t. What did you see in Room 207?”

Synopsis

1800s. San Antonio, Texas: In room 207 at the Longhorn Saloon, in the long shadow of the Alamo itself, a woman renowned for her beauty was brutally murdered. Her killer was never found.

One year ago: In that same historic room, another woman vanished without a trace. Her blood was everywhere…but her body was never recovered.

Now: In the last month, San Antonio has become a dumping ground for battered bodies.

All young women, many of them long missing, almost all forgotten. Until now.

Texas Ranger Logan Raintree cannot sit by and let his city’s most vulnerable citizens be slain. So when he is approached to lead a brand-new group of elite paranormal investigators working the case, he has no choice but to accept the challenge. And with it, his powerful ability to commune with the dead.

Among Logan’s new team is Kelsey O’Brien, a U.S. marshal known for her razor-sharp intuition and a toughness that belies her delicate exterior. Kelsey has been waiting all her life to work with someone who can understand her ability to “see” the past unfolding in the present. Now she has her chance.

Together, Kelsey and Logan follow their instincts to the Alamo and to the newly reopened Longhorn, which once tempted heroes with drink, cards and women. If the spirits of those long-dead Texans are really appearing to the victims before their deaths, only Kelsey and Logan have the skills to find out why.

And if something more earthly is menacing the city’s oldest, darkest corners, only they can stop it—before more innocent women join the company of San Antonio’s restless ghosts….

Days of Future Past

Days of Future Past

It is by no means an irrational fancy that, in a future existence, we shall look upon what we think of as our present existence, as a dream. –Edgar Allen Poe

Fate sometimes conspires to right a decades-old wrong. And the 6.8 earthquake that strikes Southern California one warm March night is the fateful event that brings family therapist Ann Hart and trauma specialist Ted McConaughy back together. In search of her cell phone after the tremor, Ann picks up a shard of vintage cut glass from a collection she and her husband gathered during the four years of their marriage. For the millionth time she thinks about the day six years ago when he disappeared on a search and rescue mission in the Sierra foothills.

Sitting atop the shattered crystal, a small silver cigar lighter glistens in the beam of her flashlight. Gently she returns the Victorian piece to the shelf. What does it mean that something she and Ted, her ex-fiancé, bought together survived when Alex’s beautiful glass is smashed to dust? Ann tells herself that it doesn’t mean anything more than glass breaks and silver doesn’t.

Sara Jane McConaughy has never experienced a strong earthquake, and as her father comforts his 16-year-old daughter, his mind is flooded with memories of the Northridge quake in 1994. He was living with his fiancée, his ex-fiancée, and even after all these years he doesn’t know what caused the split, but he always loved her. And he’d been sure she loved him.

Volunteering with the American Red Cross in the aftermath of the earthquake brings Ann and Ted face-to-face for the first time since their break-up, twenty years ago. Angry, flustered, excited, and bewildered by Ted’s sudden appearance and unusual behavior while she’s teaching a small group of people relaxing exercises, Ann demands he leave. Just as excited and bewildered, Ted rushes away. His exit leaves both of them wondering about … everything. The earthquake (or is it seeing Ann?) ignites a series of recurring dreams peopled by total strangers in places Ted has never been.

Accompanied by short lapses of time and sleepwalking, the dreams take a heavy toll on his waking hours. Sara Jane’s concern sends Ted on a quest to discover the cause and find a cure. When all medical possibilities are exhausted, he turns to a colleague, whose diagnosis leaves Ted more baffled than ever. Tom Alderman believes that the dreams are memories of past lives. The lives live in his subconscious, and the cure is hypnotherapy.

After several months of suffering with these increasingly emotional recurring dreams, Ted turns to Ann for help. One of Ann’s specialties is hypnotherapy and since he must be able to trust the hypnotist, Ann is his only salvation. Ann’s agreement to try and help (at the urging of a mutual friend) sends her carefully regimented and calm life into complete turmoil. The garden gate they pass through together sends them on a journey that defies time and reason, forcing them to rethink their past, present, and future. Now, each must reconsider their capacity for love and forgiveness. Things are not always what they seem.

Chapter Eight

Thursday, March 13

THE courtyard of Toni’s building was unnervingly quiet. The terrarium-like space with a waterfall-fed pond and stream stood silent and dry. The earthquake must have damaged the water system in the building. It made him wonder if Toni would even be in her office. There was no one around, but the faint sound of clanging metal hammering metal indicated that workers were there.

The door to Toni’s office stood partially open. If she wasn’t there would her door be open? Perhaps her last patient left and the next had not yet arrived. His footsteps seemed to echo in the stillness of the landscaped atrium. He stood at the open door gathering his courage, finally pushing it open the rest of the way.

The office reminded him of a study or library in an English manor house. The centerpiece of the room was a large desk, mahogany perhaps. A dusty rose leather chair sat behind it. At one end of the large room was a conversation area. There was a small oval table separating a loveseat and two comfortable looking chairs. Knowing Toni, he suspected several of the pieces were antique.

There was no trite theme like ‘English Country Cottage’ and no obvious color scheme either. It wasn’t the usual therapist’s office with blue or yellow walls with decorations that theoretically created a calming atmosphere. Like Toni, this room was warm and inviting. It was a gift she had, making people comfortable.

He stepped into the office. At the other end of the room was a spiral staircase of highly polished wood which led to a loft surrounded by railings matching the staircase. He assumed the earthquake had caused the empty shelves that lined the balcony.

He strained to see if she was upstairs and took a few steps backwards until he bumped into one of the chairs in the conversation area. There she was, sitting on the floor stacking books after wiping them off with a cloth. The sun streamed through the skylight highlighting glints of copper in her hair. She was wearing it up, accentuating the curve of her neck. He remembered how the chestnut tresses looked when they tumbled in soft waves over her shoulders and down her back. He sighed.

He hadn’t really seen her yesterday, so he didn’t realize how lovely she still was … yesterday! That was why he was here, to apologize for whatever it was he’d done. He sat on the arm of the closest chair and cleared his throat.

Ann glanced over her shoulder assuming it was one of the workmen who had been coming in and out since she arrived. She couldn’t have been more surprised. She got up and went to the railing.

“How did you find me?”

He blew out the breath he’d been holding. “My powers of deduction are quite remarkable these days … you’re listed in information.”

“Oh.” Her stomach was suddenly tied in knots.

“When did you change your name?”

“I got married, if it’s any of your business.”

“I meant your first name.”

“Ann is more professional than Toni.”

“Toni suits you.”

“It suited the child I was. What do you want?”

“I want to apologize.”

“For what?”

“Yesterday.”

Eager for him to leave, she rushed to say, “Apology accepted.” She hesitated a fraction of a moment. “You can go now,” she said and started to turn away.

“I’d like to talk.”

“About what?”

“You could tell me what you’ve been doing.”

“I have no desire to have a conversation with you about anything, certainly not about my life.” She had the souvenir box from Big Bear in her hand, and she almost threw it at him, but controlled herself. “Look, I accepted the apology for your bizarre behavior yesterday, so why are you still here?”

Ted slipped off the arm of the chair into the seat. “Why are you so angry?”

She glared at him from her perch in the loft and could see in his eyes that he really didn’t know why. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, turning her back to the room. Why was she still angry after all these years? Uncle Jamie had tried many times to get her to purge the anger, but even through her happy years with Alex she held on to it. If she had a patient doing this, she’d be counseling to let it go. So why couldn’t she?

Her thoughts thus engaged and her back to the room she didn’t see Ted move from the conversation area to the foot of the stairs. She turned at the sound of an unfamiliar voice.

“Miss?”

Ann rubbed her eyes dry before turning. “What?”

Speaking with a soft Scottish brogue Ted said, “I would know your name.”

She stepped to the head of the stairs. “What?”

“Your name Miss, what is your name?”

Now, what was happening? Ted was standing there looking up at her, but it wasn’t Ted. What did that even mean? Assuming it would be like yesterday, she braced herself for another explosive confrontation. She looked into his eyes; it definitely wasn’t Ted looking back. What was going on? Whatever it was, she was concerned that he might become as volatile as he had been the day before so thought it best to play along until she could figure out what he was doing.

Slowly she said, “Ann Hart, my name is Ann Hart.”

He made a deep bow. “Andrew Mcnaughton, at your service, Miss Hart.” His mouth turned into a lopsided grin. “It is Miss, is it not?”

Baffled, but trying to elicit information, she sidestepped his question and asked one of her own. “How do you come to be here Mr. Mcnaughton?”

Continuing in the Scottish brogue he hesitantly answered, “The same way you did, Miss Hart. I boarded at Glasgow.”

“Scotland?”

He chuckled. Obviously it was Scotland for where else would they have been? “Yes. We left Glasgow under full sail at eventide yesterday, and with God’s speed shall arrive in Antigua three weeks hence.” He looked up at her rather quizzically and asked, “Are you in need of the ship’s physician, Miss Hart?”

Unsure what to say about any of it she asked, “Why do you ask?”

“As you are aboard a ship but have no memory of it, I thought perhaps you were in need of medical assistance.”

Still thinking that playing along would answer some questions she responded, “I am quite well, thank you, however, as you suggest I do seem to have lost some time. Can you tell me the date?”

“It is, as of the midnight hour, the tenth of May in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and five.”

A loud rap on the open door made both Ann and Ted turn. A man in gray work clothes looked up at her. “Saw your door standing open, Doc, wanted to check that nothing was amiss.” He looked through squinty eyes at Ted. “Are you all right?”

Ann looked down at Ted, who looked up at her. He was back. He was Ted again. She turned to the workman. “I’m fine. Thanks, Sam.”

Glaring at Ted, he said, “Okay, just makin’ sure.” He left, looking over his shoulder as he went.

Once the workman was gone, she asked, “What’s going on with you?”

Trying to recovery gracefully, from what he wasn’t sure, he answered her question with, “What do you mean?” He glanced around. Before Ann could answer him he said, “How did I get over here?”

“You walked.”

“I guess I mean, why am I over here?”

“Well, you should say what you mean, and mean what you say.”

“Hmmm, I believe we’ve had that conversation before.” She couldn’t help but smile, remembering their first meeting.

She was about to ask him about his odd behavior again, when he cleared his throat and pulled the rose out of the pocket of his jacket. He took a few more steps up the stairs, and then held it out to her. “I brought this as a bit of a peace offering. It reminded me of you.”

His sporadic and peculiar behavior was pushed to a back burner, and curiosity now replaced her anger. Hesitantly she said, “It’s beautiful.” It was almost a question. Taking a few steps down, she accepted the proffered bloom, “I’ve never seen a rose this color. Where did you get it?”

“The Huntington Library.”

“I didn’t know the Huntington sold individual blossoms like this.”

Quietly and with downcast eyes he admitted, “I didn’t buy it, exactly.”

“Exactly?” Realization struck, and her eyes popped wide open. “You picked it!?! You stole it from the rose garden?”

He looked, for all the world, like a small boy caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Then she saw a smile come into his eyes that spoke of satisfaction. She couldn’t help herself; she laughed.

“I’ve never been given a pilfered rose before.” She smiled.

It was nice that she wasn’t angry about it. “I couldn’t resist it.”

“I could probably have your library membership revoked and have you banned permanently from even being allowed in.”

“But you wouldn’t, would you?”

Unable to deny her amusement, Ann conceded that she would not. The ‘girl on the swing’ clock chimed the half hour. Ted glanced at his watch.

“I need to go,” he said as he took the few steps still separating them. “It was wonderful seeing you again.” He leaned in and kissed her cheek then rushed down the stairs. At the door he turned back, “I’ll call you,” he said and left.

Ann’s mind was in complete turmoil. But when she calmed down and thought about it for a second, she found that she really enjoyed the exchange. She sat on the step in the middle of the staircase, and inhaled the fragrance of the rose. A pilfered flower. She shook her head, making no effort to stop the grin from spreading across her face. She was amazed at how comfortable it was being with him, but even more amazed that she wanted to hear from him.

My Review

Right from the start you are thrust into the action. Her name is Sadie Stanton and she owns the Stanton Agency, where she serves all things preternatural. When Cameron’s Law was passed, making all supernatural beings citizens, Sadie saw the opportunity and offered her services for paranormal investigations. She’s perfect for the job, after all, she’s a vampire. While helping a client in the graveyard, a crazed woman runs up and stakes Sadie. As quickly as she appeared, she ran away.  Lucky for Sadie, the woman didn’t know her anatomy. It hurt like hell, but healed quickly. And the night is still young. Following proper procedures, she files a complaint and has the bad luck to have her complaint taken by Detective Johnston, a shifter. There is no love lost between these species and he is being a jerk, or is she just reading him wrong. He definitely gets under her skin, and as her receptionist, Madison, said, “He was tugging on her pigtails.” Soon enough, Sadie has to deal with Johnston again. It appears that young vampires are attacking werewolves and this could have an adverse affect on the new law.  Sadie wants to avoid that at all costs and begins to work closely with Detective Johnston. They need to see who or what is behind this before there is an all out war between the vampires and the werewolves. There are so many awesome characters in this book. Each one, even the ones with only small roles, stand out as individuals and their voices are strongly written. My favorites are Sadie and Dakota. Can’t wait for you to meet Dakota. If you think Sadie is tough, wait until to see Dakota in action. She is a hunter and even Sadie isn’t sure of just what she is, maybe something shifty or fae.The author left me wondering about that in this first book.I also really liked the view of Sadie’s everyday life while being a vampire, her normalness.“It was a standard evening. I showered and dressed, had breakfast and checked to see if I had any messages. After that, I ran a few errands, which were ultimately very banal. Just like all the other myths, being a vampire did not automatically make your life exciting or glamorous, and you didn’t come equipped with servants. Vampires still had to do things like go to the bank, buy food and do their laundry.”Of course, her breakfast must have been some type of blood and her day started after dark. I wonder what the grocery stores are like, having to stock edibles for all types of supernatural beings. There are more attacks and the race is on to solve this case before all hell breaks loose. You’ll meet some very interesting characters, good and bad.

You’ll get to see how Sadie interviews demon summoners, and lawyers for her agency, which was a fun way for the author to introduce new characters.

And you get to meet Dakota, the bounty hunter from hell. Still not sure what she is.

I had a really fun time getting to know the characters of Adelheid, the largest supernatural community in all of New England.

For a not so long book, this one is packed full of back story mysteries, budding romance, lethal investigations, and a look at the politics of a preternatural town.

A great beginning to this series which the author wraps up nicely, but hints at answers to some lingering questions, which leads you to the next book.

 Synopsis

Vampires are people, too.

Cameron’s Law has made all supernatural creatures legal citizens, and the boy next door has suddenly become the werewolf next door. With Sadie Stanton, vampire and one of the public faces of the legislation, calling the little town of Adelheid, Connecticut home, it can’t help but be a focal point for these once mythical beings.

But when vampires start attacking werewolves without provocation, Adelheid draws the attention of those that would seek to have Cameron’s Law repealed and would send the preternaturals back into the shadows they used to hide in, but without the safety of their anonymity and their law.

Can Sadie keep the city’s two biggest species from descending into chaos and war before it brings all of them to harm? And can she do it when she herself gets thrust into the spotlight?

My Review
.
I love it. This book features Dakota, bounty hunter extraordinaire. She is one of my favorite characters.Dakota hunts the NHF, or Non-Human Form creatures. She’s the one police call when they can’t handle a particular supernatural being. Cameron’s Law may have made all preternaturals citizens, but just like humans, you get your bad seeds and that’s when they call Dakota.Dakota now kind of works for Stanton at her agency. She has a long way to go to be a team player and she’s kind of scary. She’s working a case for Myles Bail- Bonds. A fight ends in death and the vampire, wanted for manslaughter, has bolted. Then she gets a phone call to come down to the police station. The Captain has a case he needs help with.It seems he needs an ancient, a vampire over 1000 years old, found and brought in.Dakota doesn’t usually work more than one case at a time, but she’s intrigued. She’s never hunted an ancient before. And Detective Moore, the visiting detective, has caught her eye. When she learns the detective is looking for a mysterious being, the name slaps her in the face. She’ll need to stay close to Moore in order to monitor her hunt for this being, which happens to be Dakota’s sister.Someone is following Dakota, things are heating up, people are being torn apart, and bodies are disappearing. What I really enjoyed about this second book, is Dakota finally opens up, as much as she can, and tells what she is, or thinks she is. She starts to let others in, to trust a few people, to get this ‘friend’ thing. The authors flashes you back into time so you can see Dakota’s origins and why she is like she is. You also meet her deadly sister. Not someone you are going to like at all.The writing is so fluid. The characters and situations feel normal, not fictional. You forget they can’t really exist and just go with it.All I’ll say about the ending is it left me grinning. And, of course, wanting more.

Synopsis

Forever is a long time.

The life of a hunter is a lonely one. Perhaps more for Dakota than others in her line of work. Not only is she better than anyone else at chasing down the things that go bump in the night, but her past chases her with the same tenacity.

She’s built walls around her solitary existence and that’s the way she likes it, but the past never sleeps. When she’s hired to hunt an ex-lover for murder, it’s just the first in a string of memories that will bring Dakota’s past, present and future into a collision course.

And when she agrees to take on a second case and hunt down an Ancient, a vampire over one thousand years old, it unleashes circumstances onto that collision that will shake the foundation of everything she’s built and force her, for the first time in a long while, to look to others.

Can she survive it, like she’s survived these past four centuries? Or will the weight of it all finally crush her?

My Review
.
D is a reluctant vampire. He is lured by a mysterious and beautiful woman to a vampire bar. He really should have known better.I guess a few too many drinks left him with his guard down. He hates fangs, his name for vampires, and certainly wouldn’t have let this female turn him into one.Their night of passion ends with a quick snap of his neck and now he’s that thing, a fang.D is haunted by a dark hunger, has been for a long time, and now he has a hunger even greater, a hunger for blood. As he gets the hang of it, of being a fang, he feels the need to find out why Ceille did this to him, why she thought he could help her. So he returns to the scene, to the vamp bar 5, and asks the owner, Quintus, what Ceille’s story is.What Quintus tells him leaves him hanging. Ceille was beheaded by another vampire. She is now truly dead. When he turns Cassandra, a young woman dying after being attacked, he has a new bunch of problems. She can’t be left on her own, like he was, and he is her sire, he is responsible for helping her adjust. There is something special about Cassandra, something that draws vampires to her. D takes her to the vampire coven lead by Jade. They will help her adjust and learn to control her abilities. Now, a vampire is after him and her and he has no idea why. Too bad Ceille is dead for good, but maybe, just maybe, she can still tell him what he needs to know. What I liked best about D is how at first, he came off as callous, as a drunk wandering aimlessly through life. Then, when he’s turned into the thing he despises, only then does his humanness come out. That’s when I started to like him, to pull for him.Dakota makes a boisterous appearance, as does Sadie, Johnston, and several other characters from the first two books.I like that you could read these as stand-alones, but why would you want to. You can get all three books individually at a very affordable price, or you can get all three stories in one book!

I read one book each night and had a fun time doing it. I never had to wait for the next release and all of my favorite characters made appearances, like old friends stopping by to visit.

I caught myself wishing there was a town like Adelheid, a town of supernaturals and humans living side by side. I think I’d like it there. Who knows, maybe there is.

My Review
.
There are two story lines in this book.In the beginning, a young woman is talking to you, the therapist, about what happened to her when she was abducted and terrorized for eleven months. Her name is Detective Nyck Marlowe, but she’s just Nyck. The other is solving a series of murders who’s killer leaves a signature like the one Nyck is wearing. You’ll flash back and forth, but never in the middle of a chapter. There is no interruption and the glimpses into her psyche are very helpful in understanding her actions and reactions during this case.Thee victims all resemble her and the killer leaves the telltale scars of vines upon their bodies.Nyck insists it can’t be the same killer, as the one who brutally tortured and scarred her face and body is long dead. But as the bodies continue to pile up, she begins to wonder. Could there have been an accomplice? No, she’s sure the killer worked alone. Could they have killed the wrong man? No, he was caught red-handed.Nyck doesn’t believe in coincidence, so who is killing these girls, why do they all resemble her, and how does he mark them? These are just some of the questions Nyck has. She has to revisit her dark past, face the memories head on and, with the help of her partner, Detective Vance Johnson, a shifter, catch this killer before more young women die.The thing I love the most about Mia Dariens Adelheid series, is that each book is written about a character you have met in the other books. You get to know the back story about the character and learn what makes them tick.Nyck is complicated. She has the responsibility of caring for her younger sister Ana, who has Down Syndrome, and has her good days and bad days. Then she has to deal with her own issues from when she was brutalized and nearly killed. Now she has to deal with a killer that just might be the very person who left the trail of scars on her body.

Any ordinary person would buckle under the pressure. But Nyck is strong and determined, while also being nurturing and vulnerable.

With her and her sister being pretty much the only humans living in Adelheid, she somehow feels safe there. Cameron’s Law, giving supernatural beings the same rights as humans, has made Adelheid the largest community of all kinds of beings, from vampires, to shifters, and others.

You get to see some familiar characters from other books in this series. That always makes it more genuine and entertaining for me. I get to see what’s up with them and Mia is great at bringing them into the picture in just the right moments.

With each book I read in this series I think, this is the best one, this is my favorite character. Then I read the next book, and think the same thing!

I wonder who I’ll think is my favorite next?

One word can change the story of your life forever.

Abduction. Torture. Surrender.

Eleven months from her adolescence have framed thirty-one years of Detective Nykk Marlowe’s life. Despite the trauma of her past, and the unique physical scars it left her with, she’s built a career as a detective for the Adelheid Police Department.

Her personal life might only consist of caring for her sister and a pet rabbit, but she accepts that.

She accepts that she’ll never be able to be like “normal” people, even the supernatural ones. As long as she can keep the past where it belongs, she’s okay.

But when the body of a teenage girl shows up with the same scars that Nykk sees in the mirror every day, her “okay” life gets turned upside down and she’s forced to confront the past she’s been looking away from for sixteen years.

And when it turns out there’s already more than one victim, the pressure’s on to stop the killer before any more girls are tortured, mutilated, and murdered.

My Review

It’s been a while since I read the first four books in this series but everything came rushing back thanks to references to past events. Mia kept them brief and placed them perfectly to not interrupt my reading enjoyment.

I’ve had such fun with this series and couldn’t wait for Detective Vance Johnston to have his own story.  His rough and tumble relationship with Sadie, a vampire, was such fun to read and I’ve been curious how that was going.

It looks like things are going great between Sadie and Vance, despite her reservations about the weretiger. He knows she’s got a thing about her being a vampire and him being a shifter. About her immortality and watching him grow old. But he’s not given up on her. There’s hope and they are happy.

Vance becomes involved in a double homicide with preternatural elements and his happy world falls apart.

This was so suspenseful. Vance’s homicide investigation lead to his kidnapping. He’s put in a situation that goes against everything he believes in. Forced to do things he has no control over was gut wrenching.

I felt so bad for Vance. He’s a cops cop and a good man. His agony over what he’s forced to do is hard to read. His guilt is heavy even though it’s not like he had a choice.

His sensitivity for the others trapped with him along with his faith that his friends will rescue him revealed a softer side, one usually saved for Sadie, and had me hoping along with him.

As with her other books, Mia deals out the mystery, drops you into the action, and has you crossing your fingers and toes for a happy ending.

Some of the characters from the other books make an appearance. The one I wanted the most, Dakota, didn’t actually feature in this story but the mere mention of her name caused a ripple throughout the story. Actually, she scares me. She has that affect. LOL

I just love this series and hope to read more about Adelheid and keep in touch through further books.

Book Description

Things are on the up for Sophie Morgan.

She fended off vampires on a holiday to Antwerp, escaped them on her return in Coventry, stabbed her neighbor and is slowly rebuilding her life in her hometown of Bethel. Running the family property business may not be lucrative but she’s happy. Since returning to Wales, she has only had to kill one vampire and thanks to the linoleum on her kitchen floor, even that was an easy clean up.

Then a mixed blessing arrives in the form of Mickey Kelly, the barman she had a brief flirtation with in Antwerp. After being missing for months, he arrives on her doorstep one rainy night. His brother has been murdered and vampires are coming for her. Little do the pair know that Sophie’s estranged father is among their numbers. He’s coming for his daughter… and he’s not the only one.

Death in the Family is the long awaited sequel to Relative Strangers, with some familiar faces as well as some new ones.

Will Charles Ferrers, Sophie’s former adversary, pursue her to South Wales and if so, to what end? Who is the mysterious man following her? Will Sophie and Mickey finally consummate their relationship and where will it lead them? Or will there be more than one new man in her life?

Find out how our practical, resilient, if not slightly insecure, Sophie deals with a whole new range of challenges in the second in the ‘Sophie Morgan vampire series’. This time she has bigger problems than vampires to deal with. This time she has family visiting.

Death in the Family is the second Sophie Morgan vampire book and will be available from Amazon from 14th February – the perfect valentine gift for the vampire slayer in your life!

Excerpt

Julie was beautiful in her sadness. The faint lines, that had started to form around her eyes, reminded him of the laughter he had missed, the private jokes which they should have shared over the years. Her red hair was still fiery but had mellowed to the colour of ancient amber, the freckles on her arms blended from summers in the sun so that her pale skin now had a healthier complexion.

A hunger surged inside him. He ran his fingers through his hair and tugged at it. Julie was a matter of moments away. All he had to do was call her name, knock on the window, rip off the door and announce himself to her, take her in his arms, slip his tongue around hers, press his teeth into her flesh, own her, be with her, climb into her and walk around in her flesh, in her heart, in her soul till they both descended into rapturous madness.

In the flood of hitherto suppressed emotion that washed over him, Kasper forgot himself for a second and lost himself in Julie. In that moment, he was with her, stood next to her, cradling her in his arms as a father, a lover, a son. He wanted to be everything to her, to show her the world.

He didn’t hear the footsteps that quietly crept up from behind him, cushioned by the damp grass and soft soles. Nor did he hear the rustle of coat sleeves as the arm swung back and launched the tyre iron at his skull. The swift thud of metal against flesh was barely audible, as was the gentle plod of footsteps making away with his limp body across the lawn.

Excerpt
Our eyes locked. Like magnets, our bodies leaned in. Even though I had felt a connection
with Trent back in Houston, my mind always took me back to Farrell. But I kept
resisting him because he represented a part of me I didn’t know, a part of me
that didn’t exist anymore.
My body trembled. Even though I wanted to be with him, I wasn’t sure if I could trust
my emotions. “Farrell, I don’t know if the feelings I have for you are really
mine. Or if they’re glimpses of another version of me.”
He traced the side of my face with his warm fingertips. “It’s you, Dominique. Here. Now.
And nobody else. I promise.”
Desire coursed through my veins, and I knew, without a doubt, he was right. I wanted
him. I needed him. In this life. Right now. And I was tired of fighting it.
“Farrell,” I whispered.
He brought his face within inches of mine and stared deep into my eyes before brushing his
warm, soft lips against my mouth. Tingles erupted all over my skin. Warmth
spread throughout my cold body. He wrapped his strong arms around me and
brought me closer. Our kiss was slow and deep. His breath and taste drew me in,
and I wished I could melt into him.
He moved his mouth down to my neck, sprinkling kisses all over me. “I’ve waited so long
for this,” he whispered.
            I ran my fingers
through his thick hair and moaned. “Oh, Farrell.”
Footsteps crunched in the distance, killing the moment. We separated fast, pretending
like nothing had happened even though everything had happened.
I was his, and he was mine.

My Tease for this week is from

Night Carnival

by Kathryn Meyer Griffith

23706866

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Tease is from 63% in the eBook.

They couldn’t touch or hurt me; they couldn’t hurt anyone anymore, trapped and helpless as they were in their purgatory life. But they were with me always.

My Review

Ever since I watched the movie Something Wicked This Way Comes I’ve been drawn to stories that use the carnival as their location.

What’s scarier than the barker’s hollering and badgering you to try their games, enter their tents. And the clowns with their white face paint and yellow teeth. I’ve never liked clowns.

Now imagine a night carnival run by supernatural beings, vampires and shifters. They’d give you quite a show and some visitors would never go home again.

After losing first her husband and then her mother all in one month, Angela is now facing the rest of her life alone. Sitting in her mothers empty house, she hears the sound of calliope music. The music of a carnival. But it’s the wrong time of year for one. It speaks to something deep inside her, drawing her out into the chilly night, through the woods, to a small carnival that shouldn’t be there.

Dominic, a vampire and owner of the carnival, calls to Angela. He’s been waiting a long time and it’s time for her to really start living. His call brings her to the carnival and the wonders of his life.

This is a very short story but also very fulfilling. The author did an excellent job of making me familiar with the characters quickly. The choice of the night carnival was great too. What an ingenious way for the supernatural beings to blend in. People expect the strange there. And the atmosphere is creepy and intense.

An enchanting yet macabre tale of soul mates and happy “forever” after.

Synopsis

Walking among the eerie assortment of skill-game booths and tattered tents she’s strangely drawn in by the eerie calliope music and the mesmerizing inhabitants of a carnival the likes she’s never seen before. The carousel is alive with demonic steeds flashing their hooves and neighing silently to the moon. There are wraith like luminescent creatures lurking in the shadows along the midway and the Ferris wheel, aglow with thousands of twinkling lights, moves without human hands to control it. The strange animals, lions, tigers and elephants, in the main ring have no human trainers, are much larger than they should be, and seem to float. Then there are the sad-faced clowns who manipulate the crowds with only their glittering eyes and thoughts. They and the other carnies are vampires. One–ancient and powerful, their leader Dominic–has been waiting for her for a long time…to make her his forever. He offers her what she’s never had before. Love. A place to call home. But is she willing to give up her humanity for this creature of the night? Is she willing to join her life to his and live among the vampires, shape shifters and ghosts of the traveling carnival for eternity? Could she be happy as one of them? Is she willing to die for him? (The short story Night Carnival was a *Finalist* in the 2011 Just One Bite Anthology Contest at All Romance eBooks.)

The pain came in slowly, like a tide filling an empty pool. Synopsis

“I saw the only woman I ever loved almost destroyed by my secrets. But it was the telling of them, in the end, that brought her to ruin.”From the journals of Matise DevoncroixHannah Braselton North has abandoned civilization to spend her life in the Alaskan wilderness. And now she holds in her hands the supposed “memoirs” of one Matise Devoncroix. It is a story of strange desires and forbidden love–the tale of a magnificent hidden race and a tortured, doomed relationship. And it is somehow connected to the critically injured male wolf Hannah pulled from the same airplane wreckage in which she discovered the diary.

But the deeper she delves into Devoncroix’s story–and the stronger her recovering “patient” becomes–the more the sad, reclusive scientist realizes that what she is reading is no mere fiction. The world’s true rulers have been revealed to her: fierce, strong, beautiful, and sensual creatures who have long dominated civilization in secret. The burned and bloody wolf she has taken into her small cabin is one of them: a living relation of the tragic Matise, Nicholas Devoncroix. And as his broken body mends, his awesome powers of attraction strengthen as well–as do his memories and his rage…and his lust for vengeance.

I read this book many years ago and it still pops into my head now and then. I couldn’t remember the title or even the author, but the story stayed with me.

I was doing the happy dance when I picked up a book at the local thrift shop and read the cover flap. This was that book! And it’s a beautiful hardback copy in excellent condition. I had to dive right in and now I’m sharing it with you.

The writing is superb and the description doesn’t do the story justice. It’s rich, deep, and sensual.

FIND ME TRILOGY (Dark Pleasures)

by Julie Kenner

Paranormal Romance

Published on January, 2015

A doomed woman. A dangerous and mysterious man. And an epic passion that cannot be denied…

From the first moment I saw Malcolm, I felt his power shudder through me. Lithe and powerful, dark and controlling, he cast a spell over me that I didn’t understand, but to which I willingly surrendered.

One touch and I melted. One glance into his storm-swept eyes and I was lost. One kiss, and I was bound.

But sometimes passion can burn to hot, and it would take all of our strength for Mal and I to survive the fire that raged between us…

NOTE TO READERS: Each of the 1001 Dark Nights novellas is a stand-alone, be sure not to miss Caress of Darkness by Julie Kenner. The Find Me books are a true trilogy spanning Mal and Christina’s romance and are meant to be read in order.

Excerpt #1 – Ch 1

Mal stood by the bed and looked down at the woman he’d just fucked.

She was drop-dead gorgeous, lithe and strong with alabaster skin and hair as dark as his own. She was smart and funny, had good taste in wine, and had sucked his cock with rare skill.

Not a bad resume, when you got right down to it, and if Mal had even an ounce of sense he’d slide back into bed, sink deep inside her, and try once more to forget how goddamn lonely he was.

Shit.

She didn’t deserve that. Hell, none of the women he fucked deserved that. Which was why he had a strict one-time only policy. Shared lust and pounding sex to work out some of life’s kinks was one thing. But Mal didn’t do serious or personal. Not anymore.

He’d had serious. He’d had personal.

Hell, he’d had love. Epic, forever, everyone-else-can-just-melt-away love.

And not only love, but respect and humor and passion so intense that he felt alive only when he touched her.

He’d had all that.

Now, all he had was a nightmare.

On the bed, the woman shifted, then smiled up at him, soft and sultry. “Mal? What’s wrong?”

He said nothing, and she sat up, letting the sheet fall to her waist to expose her bare breasts as she held out a hand to him. “Come back to bed and let me make it better.”

If only it was that easy.

“I have to go.”

“Go?” She glanced at the clock and then pulled up the sheet to cover her nakedness. “It’s not even midnight.” Her voice was indignant.

“It can’t be helped.”

“You son-of-a-bitch.”

He didn’t wince, didn’t try to defend himself. What defense was there against the truth?

Instead, he moved to her side, then brushed his fingers lightly over her forehead. “Sleep,” he said, then stepped away as the woman fell back against the pillows, lost once again to the world of dreams.

He pulled the sheet up to cover her, then glanced around the room in search of his clothes. He’d brought her to the penthouse suite at the stunning Gardiner Hotel, a relatively new Fifth Avenue boutique in which he held a significant financial position. Now he moved through the bedroom and parlor, gathering discarded garments as he walked.

He pulled on his jeans, then slipped his arms into the white button-down that he’d worn that evening before going out in search of a woman to take the edge off. He let it hang open as he stepped out onto the patio, then moved to the stone half-wall that separated him from the concrete and asphalt of Fifth Avenue twelve stories below.

It would be easy enough to jump. To end his pain, even if only for a few moments.

And a few moments were all that he would get before the phoenix fire would surround and gather him, reducing him to ashes before once again regenerating him.

Immortality.

Had he truly once believed it was a gift? To have an eternity in this body that could touch and feel and experience such profound pleasure?

Three thousand years ago, it had been a gift, but that was when she’d been beside him, and it was Christina he’d been touching. Caressing.

Christina he’d held in his arms. Whose lips brushed gently over his skin. Who whispered soft words so close to his ear that even her breath aroused him.

But then everything had gone to shit and he’d realized that immortality wasn’t a gift. It was a curse.

He was immortal. He was alone. And every goddamn day was torture.

He closed his eyes and clutched the railing, his hands clenched so tight that the rough-hewn edges of the stone cut into his palms.

Christina

He reached out with his mind, searching for her as he did every night with equal parts dread and longing.

Sometimes centuries would pass before he felt her presence resonate through him, sometimes only decades.

It had been two hundred and sixty years since the last time he’d found her, her energy reaching out to him even from across the Atlantic, even though she never had a conscious memory of him, or even of herself.

He’d gone to her—and once more, he’d done what he had to do.

Since then, he’d grown complacent, expecting—no, hoping—that he would not feel her. That he would not find her out there in the world.

That he would not have to go to her yet again.

Christina…

Nothing. Not even the slightest tingle of awareness.

Thank god.

He breathed deep, relieved, and slowly let his body relax. He turned to go back inside, but the moment he did, everything shifted. The force of her essence lashed out, catching him unaware.

It surrounded him. Burned through him.

Hot. Powerful. Desperate.

And close.

This time, she was close. So close that it wasn’t just her essence that filled his mind, but her. The memory of her scent enveloped him, the sensation of her skin against his, the taste of her lips, of her flesh.

Oh, god. Oh, Christ.

He sank to his knees, wanting to run. Wanting to retch.

But he could do neither. And slowly—so painfully slowly—he stood.

He would do what he had to do, the same as he had done over and over again for millennia.

He would find her.

He would allow himself one moment to look at her.

And then, goddamn him, he would kill her.

I loved the first two books in the Heart Search Series so I’m very excited to share the cover for Heart Search: Betrayal!

I’m reading this now and will be sharing my review on the tour in February.

So without further ado…

 Love it!

Love it!

Betrayal front cover

One bite started it all . . .

Joshua, Remy, and the twins are settled in their new life. However, life doesn’t always run smoothly. An argument between Becky and her twin causes unforeseen circumstances, an admission by Samir almost costs him his life, and the traitor provides critical information to Liam. But who is it?

As Jakki’s visions begin to focus on the turncoat’s activities, a member of the coven disappears, and others find themselves endangered.

And when Liam’s coven attacks, who will endure?

Fate continues to toy with mortals and immortals alike, and as more hearts descend into darkness, can they overcome the dangers they face and survive?
