SAVAGE SOURDOUGH (Book 4)
Author: Mildred Abbott
Publisher: Wings of Ink Publications LLC
Pages: 296
Genre: Cozy Mystery

My Review

Now that The Cozy Corgi is up and running and a huge success, Fred is looking forward to curling up in her favorite nook with a good mystery. That all flies out the window when another dead body is discovered in her kitchen in the bakery upstairs. Time for Fred and Watson to get back to what they love, sniffing out a killer.

I very much enjoyed the first three books and couldn’t wait to dig into this one. I was pleasantly surprised to find not only another complicated mystery to figure out, but a bit darker one. And so many new details about the characters of Estes Park. I barely came up for air as I learned so many wicked little secrets.

I always wondered about Watson. Fred hinted about his origins in the first books but now I know how these two found each other. Or I should say how Watson found Fred. Fascinating stuff.

Still not sure what’s up with Sergeant Branson and getting more and more curious. Where does he go when he’s not working?  I’m sure Fred will eventually sort that out. And I wonder if their brush with romance is really over.

There’s also some fun happenings with Officer Susan Green. Her and Fred loathe each other, but more is revealed about Susan and the two gals might be warming to each other. I do say might be.

It’s more madcap fun with these colorful characters and a mystery that leads you down many mistaken paths. I’m still loving this series and now deep into the next book, Scornful Scones

Synopsis

Opening the Cozy Corgi in Estes Park is a dream come true: small-town charm, fresh-baked bread, hours by the fire reading mysteries, and… murder.

For Winifred Page and her devoted corgi, Watson, the puzzle pieces of life are falling into place as they settle into their home in the Colorado mountains. Surrounded by family and friends, Fred begins to relax into the charm and beauty of being the owner of a bookshop and bakery.

The buzz of possible romance—though Fred wasn’t looking for a relationship—has quieted as one of her suitors is no longer a viable option while the other has moved into the friend zone. But all thoughts of romance, wanted or not, fly out the window when Fred finds a dead body in the Cozy Corgi bakery… again.

Things get stickier when Fred’s main suspect turns out to be a family member of one of the local police officers—the one who already despises Fred and her little dog. Determined not to let past grievances cloud her judgment, Fred tips her detective hat and pokes deeper into the murder investigation. But in a mystery that becomes smoke and mirrors, nothing is as it seems.

The revelations Fred unveils threaten not only her picture-perfect world but her very life….

Reading the Cozy Corgi series is pretty much all you need to know about Mildred. In real life, she’s obsessed with everything she writes about: Corgis, Books, Cozy Mountain Towns, and Baked Goods.  She’s not obsessed with murder, however. At least not at her own hands (nor paid for… no contract killing here). But since childhood, starting with Nancy Drew, trying to figure out who-dun-it has played a formative role in her personality.  Having Fred and Watson stroll into her mind was a touch of kismet.

Some chit chat.

Whoa! The weather took a turn for the chilly this weekend. I went to bed to howling winds Friday night. Woke up to more wind and cold temps. The sun is out but the north winds catch my breath. And it’s supposed to get even colder next week. Even down into the 30s one night. Not liking that. And I guess swimming is out of the question this weekend. LOL

On a brighter note. I’ve been reading a bunch of cozies and having all kinds of fun. Of course, I have also been reading some scary books.

And my son and I just are watching Stranger Things. We went back and started at the beginning and plan to watch two episodes a night to catch up on all episodes. I forgot how scary some of it was. Have you watched it? What do you think?

Have a fabulous  Sunday and brand new week!

Uncle And Ants

A Silicon Valley Mystery

by Marc Jedel

Uncle and Ants: A Silicon Valley Mystery
Cozy Mystery
1st in Series
BGM Press (October 11, 2018)
Print Length: 287 pages
ASIN: B07H68L6XR

My Review

I’m always excited when I start a new cozy series and Uncle And Ants tickled my fancy on so many levels. Picture it. A man kind of full of himself and sure he’s the be all of investigations takes it upon himself to solve the mystery of who tried to kill his sister. She’s a widowed mother of two teenage girls and doesn’t seem likely to be on someone’s hit list.

Marty was determined to solve the mystery and protect his family. If only he had the slightest clue what he was doing. Good thing he didn’t take himself too seriously. I can’t count on two hands how many times I laughed out loud at his fun incompetence. And don’t even get me started on him coping with two teenage girls. The horror. LOL

Fun at every turn, a convoluted mystery with quite the list of suspects and characters you can’t get enough of. You can bet I’ll be following this series.

Synopsis

Protect his sister. Solve a murder. Get his eye-rolling, pre-teen nieces to school. And that’s just how Marty Golden’s crazy week begins to unravel.

A mysterious crash hospitalizes Marty’s sister and a nearby murder puts her in deadly danger. Too bad Marty isn’t exactly hero material.

Working in Silicon Valley, Marty’s skills lie more in navigating technology and telling dad jokes than playing an amateur sleuth. Armed with special powers of self-delusion and the inability to leave a coherent voicemail message, Marty bumbles through investigating his sister’s zany HR clients, exposing dangerous secrets and suspects, all while becoming attracted to a suspect.

In the process, Marty stumbles into a drug gang, impersonates an IRS agent, tangles with an assassin, dodges a cantankerous school secretary and is frequently outsmarted by his two sly, yet vulnerable, nieces. This quirky, fashion-backward uncle must save his sister, solve the mystery and get his life back to normal — before it’s too late.

As his eight, or maybe nine, year-old niece would say, “Betcha, you’ll like it.”

In my family, I was born first — a fact my sister never lets me forget, no matter what milestone age she hits.

For most of my life, I’ve been inventing stories. Some, especially when I was young, involved my sister as the villain. As my sister’s brother for her entire life, I’m highly qualified to tell the tale of the evolving, quirky sibling relationship in Uncle and Ants: A Silicon Valley Mystery.

My writing skills were honed in years of marketing leadership positions in Silicon Valley. While my high-tech marketing roles involved crafting plenty of fiction, we called these marketing collateral, emails, and ads.

My family and friends would tell you that Marty’s character isn’t much of a stretch of the imagination for me, but I proudly resemble that remark.

Title: BICKERING BIRDS (Book 3)
Author: Mildred Abbott
Publisher: Wings of Ink Publications LLC
Pages: 280
Genre: Cozy Mystery

My Review

I’ve been waiting for The Cozy Corgi to open. And I know it can’t be anything but a smashing success. With Fred making it all cozy and packing it with books, to Katie using the upstairs for her bakery, filling the building with mouth watering aromas, how could it not be. Opening night and the place is packed. The opening is a big success and Katie even got hired to cater a meeting of the Feathered Friends Brigade. Fred and Katie go with the group on a moonlight bird watching expedition. They don’t see any birds, but they do find a dead body. One of the members lies dead and there’s no lack of suspects. Time for Fred to get back to sleuthing.

I loved how the author showed me The Cozy Corgi. I could see it in all it’s glory. And I swear I could smell some of Katie’s delicious Lemon Bars and homemade bread. But, back to the case. This time Fred isn’t a suspect, or a witness. She just happens to be in the vicinity of the murder. But she jumps right in and starts to investigate, even though Sergeant Branson and Officer Susan Green are adamant she stay out of it. Fred cracks me up. She gets all twitchy and just can’t help herself. She has to see if she can solve the case. Even if she’ll have to face the ire of Susan. The two never hit it off. Something about Fred causes her to act like she has a burr under her saddle.

Watson is his usual grumpy, adorable self. I was thinking and came to the realization that he actually does sniff out clues. They might not seem relevant at the time but they do later.  And all he asks for in return is a bite of your scone or a nice big dog biscuit.

And Watson isn’t the only one that helps Fred investigate. Katie wants in, and Fred’s mom and stepdad, along with her uncles, know all of the latest gossip. Funny what you can discover just by eavesdropping. And you know what they say about small towns… everyone knows everyone else’s business.

Fred and Watson are on the case. The list of suspects is long. Romance has taken a back burner this time. Kind of. And there’s plenty of laughs.  I’m having such a great time with these character’s and already reading Savage Sourdough, the next book.

Synopsis

Rocky Mountain National Park has it all: rugged peaks, pine-scented forests, enchanting bird-watching locations, and… murder.

The Cozy Corgi bookshop finally opens, and Winifred Page and her headstrong corgi, Watson, are ready to welcome their first patrons. With her new best friend, Katie, creating heavenly pastries in the bakery on the top floor of the store, Fred’s dreams are all coming together in delicious and unexpected ways.

When Katie caters a meeting of the Feathered Friends Brigade and drags Fred along, they expect nothing more than loquacious chatter about birds as they endeavor to build a professional relationship with the owner of the wild bird shop. Fred and Katie are quickly roped into a moonlight snowshoeing hike in hopes of spotting a rare owl. While the endangered bird proves elusive… the murdered man in the snow is hard to miss.

Fred’s growing relationship with Sergeant Wexler hits a snag when he forbids her from donning her sleuth hat yet again. But Fred is a lot like her corgi—she doesn’t like being told what to do, even if it puts an end to a possible romance.

As Fred and Watson delve into the lives of the ornithological club members, the tangled birds’ nest of an investigation makes Fred wonder if she should have left this one to the police. But when feathers begin to fly, Fred has no choice but to flush out a killer…

Title: TRAITOROUS TOYS (Book 2)
Author: Mildred Abbott
Publisher: Wings of Ink Publications LLC
Pages: 2278
Genre: Cozy Mystery

My Review

The quaint town of Estes Park is beginning to look a lot like Christmas. It looks like a perfect picture postcard. But the picture changes abruptly when Fred and her friend, Katie, dong a little holiday shopping, enter a toy store to discover a man taking his last breaths. It’s not all candy canes and ho ho ho anymore.

Once again Fred is tangled up in a murder investigation. This time she’s not a suspect, just a witness, but her friend is at the top of the list. She won’t be told what to do and bumps up against Sergeant Branson once again. These two are such fun. There’s sparks there, but Fred is busy trying to get her bookstore, The Cozy Corgi, up and running. Does she really have time for romance? And how much can Branson take of her snooping into his investigation before those sparks turn cold?

Attempted murder becomes real when the man dies. Fred and her sidekick, the grumpy Corgi, Watson, are once again on the case. It was fun following along as they grilled suspects and sniffed out clues, the list of suspects ever changing. I admit, I was lead down several false trails and when the culprit was revealed, it was sudden and surprising.

This series is fun and addictive. Next up is Bickering Birds and I’m excited about the opening of The Cozy Corgi and curious to see what befalls these captivating characters next.

Synopsis

It’s Christmas in Estes Park, Colorado: cozy fires, twinkling lights, soft snowfall, and… murder.
The winter holidays in charming Estes Park lulls Winifred Page and her corgi, Watson, into thoughts of spiced chai and gingerbread as they settle into their new home. Fred’s dream bookshop is becoming a reality, and with Christmas only days away, her only concerns are spending time with family, enforcing Watson’s diet, and finding the perfect gifts.
The toy store beckons Fred and her friend Katie, who dash in out of the cold, during a shopping spree to discover handmade toys, cuddly stuffed animals… and a dying man on the floor.

When Katie’s desperate attempts to save the man ends in her being taken in for his murder, Fred once again dons her detective hat. She puts aside her Christmas list and—with Watson sniffing around—begins a list of suspects. But as quickly as clues point to one person, new discoveries shift the spotlight to another.
With Katie’s freedom in the balance, Fred has little time to think about gifts or to enjoy the holiday lights and music. A killer is on the loose, one who became violent in a picture-perfect Christmas toy shop, and Fred and Watson can’t begin to predict what might happen next…

Cruel Candy

Title: CRUEL CANDY (Book 1)
Author: Mildred Abbott
Publisher: Wings of Ink Publications LLC
Pages: 282
Genre: Cozy Mystery

My Review

I love cozies, the small town settings, the quirky characters, the hints of sweet, fun romance and a little touch of murder. Throw in a cute dog and it’s all good.

After a split with her partner in their publishing business, Winifred, Fred for short, moves to the small town of Estes Park, Colorado. She’s welcomed by her mother and her hipster stepfather. With a nice little cabin and an empty building she plans to settle in, make the cabin her nest and use the building to open a book store, calling it The Cozy Corgi. Wouldn’t be fitting to not show off her taciturn pooch, Watson. He’ll be featured on the stores sign. But there’s a hitch in her giddyap when she finds a dead woman in the kitchen of her new shop. Not the best way to make herself welcome and also has her bumping heads with the handsome Sargeant Branson. Time for her and Watson to get some sleuthing done so she can get back to the business of settling in.

This was fun right off the bat. I liked  Fred. She had plenty of pluck and intuition. Her furry pal, Watson was a hoot too. The little guy was such a mooch and a bit of a curmudgeon. He got away with that by being so adorable.

There were the usual quirky characters. Her mother was sweet and her stepfather was all hippie. The two sisters, Opal and Lois couldn’t be more different. It was Fred’s bad luck that her business would be sandwiched between both of theirs.

Once Fred began sniffing out clues to the murder, some really fun surprises were in store. I can honestly say, this was new one for me. Who woulda thunk it. But you know what they say, you can’t ever really know your neighbor.

I enjoyed this cozy and it’s town full of fun characters and secrets. I’m already reading Traitorous Toys, the second book, and having fun.

Synopsis

Estes Park, Colorado: picturesque mountains, charming shops, delightful bakeries, a cozy bookstore… and murder.
Winifred Page and her corgi, Watson, move to Estes Park to hit the Reset button on life. Fred is about to open her dream bookshop, and the only challenges she anticipates are adjusting to small-town life, tourists, and living close to her loveable mother, Phyllis, and hippy stepfather, Barry.
When Fred steps into her soon-to-be-bookshop for the first time, she expects dust bunnies and spiders… not the dead body in the upstairs kitchen. The local police have an easy suspect—Barry.

Determined to prove quirky Barry innocent of murder, Fred puts on her detective hat, and with Watson by her side, she explores her new town and gets acquainted with her fellow shopkeepers. Could one of her friendly neighbors be the real culprit? And what would be the motive for killing the owner of the Sinful Bites candy store? The secrets Fred discover put her at odds with the local police sergeant and threaten her cozy future in Estes.
With snow falling outside, all Fred wants to do is curl up by the fire with a good book and Watson snuggled at her feet. But before she can begin her new life and put her plans for her bookshop into action, Fred and Watson have a mystery to solve…

Some chit chat.

Halloween has come and gone and now we’re heading into the second week of November. Crazy how time flies! Not much new for me this week. I did finish Hill House. My son and I broke it up into two episodes each viewing, at night…..in the dark. LOL Every time someone said that in the movie I grinned. Spooooky!

We finally got some cool weather here. It dipped down below 50 last night. The house didn’t feel cold though. The heat from the sun during the day keeps it pretty warm in the evenings. I did spend some time getting out the cold weather clothes, washing them, and putting them in easy reach.

I also took a walk around the house, enjoying all of the plants before winter does set in and they die off til next year. Here they are now. All of these grew bigger this year than any other year.

20180904_132159

If we don’t get and freezing temps this winter, they’ll stay green. But the almanac says we are going to have brutal cold after the first of the year. I’m hoping its wrong!

Today my boss and his son are going to try to come by and help build me a fire pit. I get so many limbs and cuttings that I want to be able to sit outside on cool nights and burn them, enjoying the fire and relaxing with a hot cuppa.

Have a fabulous  Sunday and brand new week!

My Review

I’ve dipped my toes into this series in more than one place. I’m known for jumping in anywhere. It’s good to be back, seeing what Angie and the inhabitants of Haven Harbor have been doing.

Not having read a few of the previous books, I felt like I’d been away for a while and arrived back in town, among friends, learning what all had happened while I’d been away. I could picture us sitting at a cafe table and everyone rushing to tell me all the latest news.

So what’s happening now…. Angie is at an antique auction. While perusing the offerings, she comes across a tattered embroidery of a coat of arms. She bids on it and wins. Taking it home, she discovers something hidden in it’s frame and soon after someone is dead and she’s smack in the middle of the investigation. Sorting out the clues is like finding a needle in a haystack, but that doesn’t stop Angie.

I admit I was expecting a quick mystery with some fun dialogue and a bit of romance. The author surprised me and took this a step further. There’s a mystery in a mystery, danger around every corner and she really tested the boundaries of her characters.

A bit more dark and more suspenseful, this is still a cozy mystery with the quirky characters, small town ambiance and sweet romance that comes with it. I was swept right up, ushered in, offered a chair, and settled myself in for an exciting story.

Synopsis

Angie’s first auction may turn out to be her last—when she bids on a coat of arms that someone would literally kill to possess . . .

Tagging along to an estate sale with her fellow Needlepointer, antiques shop owner Sarah Byrne, Angie Curtis impulsively bids on a tattered embroidery of a coat of arms. When she gets her prize back home to Haven Harbor, she discovers a document from 1757 behind the framed needlework—a claim for a child from a foundling hospital. Intrigued, Angie is determined to find the common thread between the child and the coat of arms.

Accepting her reporter friend Clem Walker’s invitation to talk about her find on the local TV news, Angie makes an appeal to anyone who might have information. Instead, both women receive death threats. When Clem is found shot to death in a parking lot, Angie fears her own life may be in jeopardy. She has to unravel this historical mystery—or she may be the next one going, going . . . gone . . .

My Review

From cleaning crimes scenes, CeCe is now tidying up condos. She’ll do whatever it takes to get her bills paid now that her divorce is looming ever closer. While having a girls night out, one of her friends has to rush home for a family emergency and CeCe offers to help clean out Carla’s mothers house while she’s gone. She didn’t take Carla’s comments about her mother being a hoarder that seriously. First big mistake. The second was opening the old freezer. Inside is a frozen body. Now Cece puts on her sleuthing cap and butts heads with her boyfriend, a detective that wants her to mind her own business.

Other character’s I came across were CeCe’s cheating ex to be and his spying mother. Sheesh, what a pair. And CeCe’s former co-worker who bulls her way into becoming an unwelcome house guest and kind of drove me nuts. She seemed so clueless, but then I began to wonder if that was an act. Especially when some Jade elephants that CeCe rescued from Carla’s mothers house get broken and out spills a shocking surprise.

I was new to this series and hadn’t read the first book. Kind of worried me whether I could hop in here. The good news is I quickly got the gist of things and easily came to recognize the characters. I then settled in for a fun cozy, a twisty mystery and some sweet brushes with romance. Now I want to go back and read the first book and find out how it all began.

Synopsis

.
An unwelcome visitor, an unrequited love, and a dead body create chaos in a middle-aged woman’s plan for a productive summer.

Despite a looming divorce, an empty checkbook, and a struggling cleaning business, Cece Cavanaugh is determined to land on her own two feet. Adamant about staying a safe distance from the handsome detective who has her fantasizing about violating the morals clause in her prenuptial agreement, Cece dives headlong into her work.

Even though she has no free time to spare, Cece finds herself guilted into cleaning a hoarder’s home. Her discoveries in the condemned house are too shocking to ignore. Diamond-laden pachyderms, a secret cache of money, and a dead body lure Cece into launching an investigation that places her in direct contact with the one person she’s desperate to avoid–hunky Detective Case Alder.

With clues in hand, Cece runs down leads and eliminates suspects one by one. Her conclusion and brave accusation put a friend’s life in peril forcing Cece to hatch a plan to outsmart the killer. A daring move could either save Cece and her friend or lead to their demise.

Author Tricia L. Sanders

.

Tricia L. Sanders writes cozy mysteries and women’s fiction. She adds a dash of romance and a sprinkling of snark to raise the stakes. Her heroines are humorous women embarking on journeys of self-discovery all the while doing so with class, sass, and a touch of kickass.

Tricia is an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, so don’t get between her and the television when a game is on. Currently, she is working on a mystery series set in the fictional town of Wickford, Missouri. Another project in the works is a women’s fiction road trip adventure.

A former instructional designer and corporate trainer, she traded in curriculum writing for novel writing, because she hates bullet points and loves to make stuff up. And fiction is more fun than training guides and lesson plans.
