Welcome to The Kid’s Korner.

I decided to do this feature as I have so many great children’s books to share. From picture books, to books for beginning readers, to middle graders, I have plenty of fun ones.

Today I’m sharing a couple of adorable children’s books that will have your kids begging you to read them again.

~~~~~
This first book I’m sharing today, Dog Toys is free as an eBook on Amazon. Just click on the cover to grab a copy.
Dog Toys
by Darcy Neils
Genre: Children’s Book
Grade Level – P – 6
Age Level – 3 – 13
My Review
Dog Toys isn’t just the title of the book, it’s also the name of the star character. Dog Toys is a good dog. He enjoys living with Andrew and playing with his toys. But there are no dogs in his neighborhood. Now he and Andrew are going to the beach. Will he meet other dogs? Will they play with him? He can’t wait to get out in the world and see for himself.
This was such a cute and fast read. Each page is a full color illustration. I really enjoyed how the author told the story along with showed it. And there’s many things to spot on each page. Dog Toys shares about what he sees and smells. I always wondered what my dog was thinking when he ran around, stopping to smell things, and what he might be seeing when he hung his head out of the car window. Makes me want to pack us up in the car and head to the beach.
This is one I recommend to dog lover’s of all ages. Dog Toys is a delight and so are the lessons learned and colorful illustrations.
One To Ten: Squirrel’s Bad Day
by Carole P. Roman
Illustrated by Mateya Arkova
Genre: Children’s Book
Grade Level – K – 4
Age Level – 4 – 8
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
My Review
Poor squirrel tripped and lost all of her acorns. Her forest friends help her see that it might not as bad as she thinks.
I’ve had lots of days like Squirrel’s. Things don’t go according to plan and I let it ruin my whole day. I remember my mother saying to count to ten and calm down, things weren’t as bad as I thought they were. I thought it was clever and fun to see Squirrel’s friends make a game of it and give examples of their bad days and how they rated from 1 to 10 how bad they were or weren’t. And each example has some fun, colorful illustrations.
I think this is a good teaching tool along with a fun adventure. Children will learn about counting, coping, and have fun looking at the pretty pictures.
Synopsis
Squirrel is rushing along a tree limb when she trips, losing all her acorns into the rushing water of the river below. Angry and frustrated, she doesn’t know what to do. Her good friend, Rabbit, lends both a sympathetic ear as well as a solution. Rather than get angry, Rabbit tells her, rate the problem on a scale of one-to-ten. By identifying and realizing the true importance of the issue, the issue may not seem so overwhelming. Adorable forest creatures help the sad squirrel put everything into perspective so he does not to get stuck in a rut over something that may not be a big deal after all.
Welcome to my Monday Minis where I share shorter reviews of books I’ve read.
I figured it was time to return to the great apocalyptic series by Nicholas Sansbury Smith. Let’s  get started.
The Hunted
Trackers #2
by Nicholas Sansbury Smith
33843988
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
Genre: Apocalyptic /  Post Apocalyptic
My Review
Having loved the first book, I couldn’t wait to see what happened next.
All across the country, people are struggling to survive and find some sense of normalcy. An EMP attack that sent life as they new it into a tailspin was just the beginning of their problems. Now facing threats from others wanting what little bit they have, the isolated mountain community also faces fights within. Who survives? Who dies? it’s anyone’s guess.
Once again I’m immediately sucked into the story. As the author takes me from group to group, back and forth across the country, the suspense builds, the danger threatens, and I almost lean forward towards the book, excited and worried about the characters.
Another thrilling, can’t put down installment in this series. And I’m already deep into the next one.
Synopsis
The deadly hunt continues in book two of the bestselling Trackers saga..
Five days ago North Korea detonated three nuclear warheads over the United States, triggering an electromagnetic pulse that crippled the country. A second attack destroyed the nerve center of America in a nuclear blast that flattened the nation’s capitol. As the government falls apart in the aftermath, the survivors must decide how far they will go to save the ones they love.
Police Chief Marcus Colton has struggled to maintain order in the isolated mountain town of Estes Park, Colorado, with the help of expert tracker Raven Spears and stranded pilot Major Nathan Sardetti. Together, they fought the evil terrorizing the town-but new threats are rising and old rivalries are coming to a head.
Charlize Montgomery, newly promoted to Secretary of Defense, is caught between loyalty to her country and love for her son, Ty. When the Marines sent to find Ty in Colorado discover a scene of unspeakable carnage, the straightforward rescue mission turns into a deadly chase as the hunters become the hunted.
Sunday Post
Some chit chat.
Another week has flown by! And spring is here at last!
Here’s last weeks picture of Flora.
20180323_124831
And here she is today.
20180331_105530
Underneath the larger leaves are a bunch of new tender leaves soon to pop through.
Last week I shared a picture of my pecan tree as the first buds appeared.
20180323_110838
And look at the leaves now!
20180330_112322
And I have some new banana trees growing!
20180331_105507
After I got done trimming back some dead leaves I found some that were several feet tall hiding behind the mature trees. I’ll share those next week.
It’s been quiet on the home front. I’ve been reading some good books. And I started a binge watch of The Santa Clarita Diet. Have you seen the show? What a hoot! LOL
Have a fabulous Easter Sunday!
My Review
A family of powerful vampires flee from persecution and wind up in America, starting a new life in Seattle. But, someone or something won’t stop hunting them. As strange creatures stalk the night and the family appears to be their focus, they’ll have to rely on each to survive and vanquish the evil.
What worked for me.
I thought it was  a nice touch to have the family of vampires actually be the Romanov’s family of Russian aristocracy. Persecuted and pursued, they fled to America, trying to assimilate into society and hide in plain sight. And I also liked that they weren’t pretty vampires. They were actually more like shapeshifters and transformed into nightmarish beings. No nice vampires that only feed on animals.
What almost didn’t work, but did.
The instant love thing. Anna sees Eric and he sees her. Bang! Instant love. Normally I run far away from this scenario. But I stopped to think, and remembered how it felt when I had an instant attraction to someone. The more I read about these two, the more I wanted them to be together. So, I’d say the author made it work.
Lots of creatures.
There are deadly vampires, a huge dragon, some wee fairy dragons, and the Shetani. The Shetani are evil beings, dark as pitch. They come in all sizes and their shapes defy logic.
What builds the suspense.
At the end of each chapter, the suspense builds as the unknown being stalks the family, drawing closer. It adds to the creep factor and I’m always up for that.
Surprises.
Plenty of them. From Anna’s transformation into her hidden vampire form, to the reveal of who’s been pursuing them for over a hundred years, and so much in between.
The ending.
As I read the last few chapters of the book and I got all wrapped up in the action, I wasn’t thinking about how it would end. I was caught off guard and it worked for me.
I’d recommend this to those who like their vampires dark and deadly, but also able to love. And to readers who like magical creatures, good or evil.
The Summer Of New Beginnings
Magnolia Grove #1
by Bette Lee Crosby
36439328
Genre: Contemporary / Romance
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
My Review
Having read a bunch of Bette’s books I couldn’t wait to read this first book in her new series.
There’s no one thing I can point to as why I loved this book. It’s many things. The genuine characters. The anticipation of what’s to come. Feeling all of those feels. Sorrow, heartbreak, frustration, hope, happiness and love. And how easily the story flows. I read this in one sitting. No way could I put it down until I was done.
Meghan is the main character. After her father dies, she gives up her dreams to keep his legacy alive. Along the way you’re introduced to her family. Shown how they struggle to move on and adapt. And Bette throws in a sprinkle of something magical. It comes with four legs and goes by Sox.
I could gush on and on about this book. I adored it. Will be reading it again. And am happily amazed that Bette got me to read outside my normal genre and showed me how good that could be.
Synopsis
One family learns that love is the greatest miracle of all.
Aspiring journalist Meghan Briggs has always been the responsible one in the family. So when her father passes away unexpectedly, leaving behind his at-risk business, she steps up to save his legacy—even if that means putting her own dreams on hold.
Tracy couldn’t be more different from her sister. She’s always been the rebellious type, without much direction in life. But in the wake of her latest romantic disaster, she finds herself moving back home as a single mother.
As Tracy experiences the difficulties of new motherhood, Meghan faces her own struggle: trying not to fall for the stray puppy she rescued. This is no time for attachments—not to the adorable “Sox,” whose owner is bound to turn up any day, and certainly not to the handsome new vet in town. But as the summer unfolds, she discovers that, like Sox, she may need rescuing, too.
As both sisters navigate unexpected challenges and exciting new relationships, they’ll find that putting the past to rest can make way for beautiful new beginnings.
Holes In The Ground
by J. A. Konrath and Iain Rob Wright
22701638
Genre:  Horror
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
My Review
Two of my go to authors when I want something dark that makes me squirm while reading have come together with a thrilling new story. I enjoyed The Final Winter by Iain and Origin by Konrath. Now they’ve teamed up and written the sequel to Origin, including character’s from both of the books.
Imagine a secret society who’s sole purpose is to protect mankind from things that go bump in the night. Things we believe exist only in our imagination. Deep below ground there are creatures beyond imaging. Locked up in a facility. They believe this time they’ve covered all the bases. No way can what happened at Samhain happen again.
So, with that thought, things do go wrong, horribly wrong. It’s monsters on a grand scale. Some you’ll recognize, some are straight out of nightmares. There were a couple I just couldn’t picture. So bizarre.  And once monstergeddon begins, it’s a massacre.
I really liked some of the character’s. A husband and wife team from the previous book, Origin, are recruited to try to find out what one of the most dangerous denizens is up to.  Some honeymoon they’re having. And the young man that accidentally got himself invited along had no idea what he was in for. Most of the scientists, security and staff I figured to be monster chum. One soldier had potential to be a good guy. And Wolfie. I liked Wolfie. Might not have if I actually saw it up close. It’s not what you’re thinking it is. And one so called monster that looks like an ordinary man, first appearing in The Final Winter, remains a mystery as to his intent til right at the end.
Once the killing starts there’s no slowing down with this one. It’s bloody death on every level of the facility. Even monsters killing monsters. No one is spared. Kind of reminded me of a scene from Cabin In The Woods. And there’s this wild twist that still has me reeling.
You actually get two versions of this book. Iain Rob Wright explains how he came to write the sequel to Origin with J.A. Konrath.. You get the final version from both authors and the first one written by Iain. The authors put their heads together and give you Holes In The Ground in all its bloody glory.
Monster lovers and fans of these two authors, you don’t want to miss this one.
Synopsis
MONSTERS EXIST…
Linguist Andy Dennison-Jones knows this all too well. He and his veterinarian wife, Sun, have been chased by them before, and barely escaped from a secret underground government facility with their lives.
Now they once again find themselves trapped alongside a collection of creatures straight out of hell. Fighting with them is an unlikely group of misfits, including a misplaced British kid, a former spec-ops soldiers, and a strange Irishman who might be the oldest living thing on earth–if he’s even alive at all.
Filled with the kind of slam-bang action, wicked scares, and sly humor that have earned J.A. Konrath and Iain Rob Wright millions of fans, HOLES IN THE GROUND is both a collaboration and a continuation of both authors’ previous work (ORIGIN by Konrath and FINAL WINTER by Wright) but also serves as a perfect introduction to their universes.
The devil you know is just as bad as the devil you don’t…
Clowders
by Vanessa Morgan
Genre: Horror, Suspense
Clervaux, Luxembourg. This secluded, picturesque town in the middle of Europe
is home to more cats than people. For years, tourists have flocked to
this place – also known as “cat haven” – to meet the cats and
buy cat-related souvenirs.
When Aidan, Jess and their five-year-old daughter, Eleonore, move from
America to Clervaux, it seems as if they’ve arrived in paradise. It
soon becomes evident, though, that the inhabitants’ adoration of
their cats is unhealthy. According to a local legend, each time a cat
dies, nine human lives are taken as a punishment. To tourists, these
tales are supernatural folklore, created to frighten children on cold
winter nights. But for the inhabitants of Clervaux, the danger is
horrifyingly real.
Initially, Aidan and Jess regard this as local superstition, but when Jess runs
over a cat after a night on the town, people start dying, one by one,
and each time it happens, a clowder of cats can be seen roaming the premises.
Are they falling victim to the collective paranoia infecting the entire
town? Or is something unspeakably evil waiting for them?
Their move to Europe may just have been the worst decision they ever made.
My Review
.
They say cats have nine lives. What that means in the lovely isolated town of Clervaux, Luxemburg is they take nine. That’s right. When a cat dies, nine human lives are taken.
When an American family moves to Clervaux, they believe the legend is just that, a legend. But then a cat is killed and not long after someone dies. One down, eight to go.
This started out so hopeful. A scenic little town, friendly inhabitants, and lots of cats. But slowly, the atmosphere darkens. Strange noises are heard. Something prowls in the house at night. Claws click across the floor. Food disappears, Shadows hide a hunched over figure. And the friendly neighbors become not so friendly. Sounds like a good movie, doesn’t it? Thanks to the author’s talent for showing the story, it felt like I was watching it.
It takes a lot to give me the creeps. I’ve read a bunch of horror stories and watched lots of movies. A few scenes in this book are so creeptastic! There’s this scene where something is stalking the next victim. It moves boldly through the crowd of tourists. They think it’s part of something put on to entertain and take pictures of it, even as it attacks. I’d like to think I’d know the difference. I read it over again and still got creeped out.
Soft kitty. Warm kitty. Little ball of fur….. Not!
My Review
Nala Bonne is still teaching pre-school as her new private investigations company gets on it’s feet. Things start looking up when she gets a new case. Someone is stalking the rescue dog queen and her charges. Nala calls on all of her resources to stop the stalker in their tracks.
While Nala was a delightful character with her completely disorganized life and seat of your pants investigation techniques, I must admit that Max, the talking dog, stole the show. I could almost hear his snark and see him try to manipulate with his puppy dog eyes. It was funny that people gave Max a lot of credit for things that Nala had actually done. I guess a talking dog would upstage most anyone.
Not having read the first book, which I plan to go back and do, I was a bit confused about why Nala’s dog, Max, could speak. Once I figured that out, I was able to focus on the mystery and enjoy all of the quirky character’s I came across.
The mystery starts off as a maybe stalking and takes a dark turn for the rescue dog queen. I had several character’s on my suspect list, but when the culprit was revealed, none of them made the cut. I like when the author provides false leads and keeps me guessing.
I enjoyed this fun mystery and getting to know the star players, two and four-legged and want to continue following the series to see what kind of pickle they get into next.
Forget about it and enjoy the moment. Her hair streamed behind her as the boat picked up speed. Even though it had been a hot Indian Summer day, going this fast on the water chilled her. The windbreaker she brought just in case would solve the issue but would cover up the flirty top she’d donned for the date. Should she be comfortable or becoming?
A loud noise interrupted before she could decide. The lake remained empty and calm, except for the wake behind the boat. Using her flat hand as a sun shield for her eyes, she peered toward the shore to figure out who might be playing the same trio of notes repeatedly. No one on the shoreline, which only deepened the mystery. It sounded so familiar. In an aha moment, she realized it was her phone. Unfortunately, the realization forced her to open her eyes in her dark bedroom.
The red numerals on her clock indicated it was one-thirty in the morning. It was too late or too early for anyone to call. The sound stopped when she realized the tune had been the one she assigned to Karly, her best friend. Karly would only call her this late if it was an emergency. A cold canine nose touched her hand as she reached for her phone on the nightstand.
“Go back to sleep, Max. It doesn’t involve you.”
Even though it was dark and Max was a black German shepherd mix, she would have sworn the dog cocked his head and gave her an oh, really look. The damp nose disappeared with the sound of dog nails on the wood floor as Max settled on the floor. She could hear him mutter under his breath, “We’ll see.”
Yeah, dealing with a talking dog could be problematic at times. Her fingers found the phone which now had a glowing dot on the dashboard for notifications. Before she could call back, the phone rang again, vibrating in her hand. Karly again.
“Why in the world would you be calling me in the middle of the night?”
Her friend’s breathless voice gasped out. “We need your help!”
M.K. Scott
M.K. Scott is the husband and wife writing team behind The Painted Lady Inn Mysteries and The Talking Dog Detective Agency. Morgan K Wyatt is the general wordsmith, while her husband, Scott, is the grammar hammer and physics specialist. He uses his engineering skills to explain how fast a body falls when pushed over a cliff and various other felonious activities. The Internet and experts in the field provide forensic information, while the recipes and B and B details require a more hands-on approach. Morgan’s daughter, who manages a hotel, provides guest horror stories to fuel the plot lines. The couple’s dog, Chance, is the inspiration behind Jasper, Donna’s dog. Overall, both are a fun series to create and read.
