The Horror At Pleasant Brook

MY REVIEW
What did I just read?! I love horror stories with small, remote towns. Makes getting help darn near impossible. And that usually means everyone knows everyone. But, you will find it hard to get to know this towns residents. You meet them. They die. Gruesomely. Horribly. In the synopsis it’s mentioned “until nothing else remains”. The victim’s remains are all that remain.
It’s Halloween and Covid lockdown in Pleasant Brook. The only things stirring are the monsters. So many of them. And they want you to come out and play. Or, perhaps they’ll come in. I’d just recently watched Phantoms, the movie based off the book by Dean Koontz, and felt some of those same terrifying feelings while reading this book.
I love my horror year round but I’m always looking for a good scare for the Halloween season. Kevin Lucia got me good.

The Necromancer’s Library
Ellie Jordan: Ghost Trapper #12

MY REVIEW
I’ve been reading Bryan’s Ellie Jordan series from the beginning and he’s managed to give me the creeps once again. A haunted library filled with medieval occult manuscripts. Ooh, can’t wait to see what Ellie catches in her trap.
Ellie is not one to shirk the dull side of gathering background information. She needs every bit of it if she’s going to catch her ghost, or ghosts. The author does a great job of making what seems tedious to Ellie, fascinating for me, the reader.
Ellie’s partner in crime, Stacey is another character I’m always happy to meet again. She adds the humor to the story for me and for Ellie. And a bit of humor may be needed to keep them sane. The place is crammed with books. Every available space is full of them. And as they get closer to solving the case, things start to get more dangerous.
A couple of things that make me love this series are the genuine, likable main characters and the super spooky ghosts and their shenanigans that really creep me out. It takes a lot to creep me out and Bryan does it every time.

MY REVIEW
Supernatural horror. I’m in for that. And there’s plenty of it in this book. Along with a cast of nice and not so nice characters. And it’s filled with action displayed in colorful, awesome graphics.
A group of door to door sales people find so much more than just some customers who slam doors in their face. They discover that monsters are real. And this is where the story takes off. You know that scene where there’s a creepy house and you know they shouldn’t go near it? Well, this group of individuals don’t take the missing person’s posters plastered all over it seriously and they enter. Normally this would have me screaming, “Don’t you watch horror movies, guys?” But nope, I was all for finding out what was inside myself. And boy did they, and me. From then on it’s bloody good fun.
Do I want to read about these characters again? Yes. And the good news is there is more coming. Can’t wait.

Detective Ramsey flung the door open, the doorknob etching into the paster wall. He didn’t care about this room of horrors.
It was still a crime scene with broken police tape on the floor after all these years. No one had entered this room since they had found the monk’s body sprawled on the floor in a fetal position, his hands reaching for the sky as though announcing himself to his creator in his dying moments. But the detective thought it was a naïve end, as the priest had been charged with the murder of a boy in 1970. He was a criminal. A paradox to think a murderer could enter the kingdom of heaven.
“The white marking on the floor is where the priest was found dead,” Detective Ramsey said.

He slapped at the flames, but when he looked down, he was fully clothed, his limbs unharmed.
The ceiling twinkled, some sort of spray glitter he’d failed to notice before. But no, the sparkles were too far away. And the air smelled fresh, not the typical hotel air, heavy with the scent of old socks. He’d expected the usual lumpy beds and noisy cooling fans.
It wasn’t long before he realized this was no hotel.
He was outside.
His gaze went first to the flashing light, emanating from an airport tower, he thought, until he heard the roar of the ocean below. Having grown up in Montana, he’d never been to either coast, but now long waves gleamed like threads of lace, appearing and then fading into the deep. He stared, half unsure of what he was seeing, and still they danced in and out under a moonlit sky, the lighthouse showing them off about every twenty seconds. A breeze caressed his face, bringing with it the scent of salt and seaweed, and then he noticed the sand cool between his fingers. He lifted one hand and let the soft grains trickle over his palm. The guys had spoken about heading for the beach after the Los Angeles show, but last he remembered, they hadn’t made it out of the bar.
The pain returned, biting at his ankles, flames erupting about the hem of his jeans. He recoiled, crab legging through the sand, one hand slapping at the fire until he fell onto his back. The vision faded to reveal his jeans intact, white cotton socks covering his ankles, the fleece jacket unzipped, his favorite high-tops on his feet.
“I didn’t drink that much,” he said out loud, though his tone was less than convincing. He removed his Kawasaki cap and ran his fingers through his thick, brown hair, resting his hand on the back of his neck. Jay had asked him to join the others. They’d left the crowd on their feet, an audience of over a thousand shouting for more. They’d deserved a celebration.
“Jay?” Daniel called, “you there?”
The last show was a blur. All he could remember was his hometown of Butte, Montana, the old grandstand at the fairgrounds lit up with stadium lights as he and the six other motorcycle riders flew over the tops of hundreds of heads. But that couldn’t be right.
They were in L.A. Their last show had to have been in L.A. Behind him, city lights danced in the distance, casting a hazy orange glow into the night sky. His last run up the ramp, he’d done the dead body and the cliffhanger. Or had it been the double grab and the superman?
The night answered only in waves, the sand whispering hush.
He had to pick up Tony in San Francisco. The thought came out of the blue. His little brother was attending the marine camp he’d drooled over for years. He’d be finished on August twenty-ninth. If Daniel weren’t there, the kid would be left stranded. He glanced at his wrist, but his watch was gone. They were supposed to spend a couple of weeks together before Tony went back to school, though Daniel wasn’t sure he was going to let his little brother return to their mother’s house. Tony had been in that hellhole long enough. Daniel had an apartment now. They could both stay there.
He patted his pockets. No keys, no wallet. But something in the front right. He dug in and pulled out the Matchbox F-14 Tomcat. He’d received it as a present when he was young, for Christmas maybe, though he couldn’t remember for sure. He’d passed it on to Tony on his fifth birthday, and then Tony had given it back before Daniel had left the hellhole for good. Tony had meant it as a good-luck charm, something to keep Daniel safe while he was performing his stunts. Daniel turned it over in his hand, puzzled. A piercing whistle grabbed his attention. He tucked the toy away and stood up. Over the din of the ocean the whistle came again, a high-pitched tone that spiked and then dropped. He held his breath. There, at the shoreline, down and to the right. The waves crested and crashed, and then a distressed, wailing sound of something or someone in pain.
It wasn’t easy running in the sand, especially in high-top sneakers. Salty grains poked at his heels. As if wanting to help, the lighthouse intermittently showed the way. Here. No, over here.

His love for all things spooky and scary was unleashed when he discovered Jurassic Park at four years old and the R. L. Stine Goosebumps collection in elementary school. He holds a huge appreciation for 80’s horror and is partial to fun, dark, and witty ensemble casting with younger heroes. Some of his favorite influences include The Lost Boys, Aliens, Gremlins, and An American Werewolf in London to name a few.
Hill’s knack for writing fiction emerged at an early age when he wrote stories for his own enjoyment. He is a collector of horror films and is a board game enthusiast. When not writing, he can be found walking trails with his dog, enjoying movie nights with friends, spending time playing video games, and camping in Maine.

Andy Watts needs a break. So when the struggling journalist is asked to revisit a fifty-year-old mystery, she jumps at the chance to move into an abandoned house and honor her long-gone mom by becoming a respected reporter. But she’s shocked when she discovers not only did a polio-stricken boy disappear from within its rooms, but his mother took a fatal tumble down the stairs.
Stonewalled by the locals and unnerved by unexplained events in the eerie home, Andy fears the town would rather bury evidence than admit one of their own could commit murder. And with the ghostly image of a youngster in leg braces persisting, she’s terrified by hints that the awful answer is calling from beyond the grave.
Can Andy deliver justice for the voiceless before she becomes the next victim?
Green house stood solemnly in a noiseless field of overgrown vegetation. The dim rays of daylight disappeared in the distance beyond, darkening the front while sharpening the jagged exterior outline with a looming violet glow. It rose above the ground, perhaps two floors high, but a lack of windows at the top told Andy it may not have an attic to speak of.
The house drew her closer. The windows appeared somewhat new, the lining freshly painted white. It contrasted the worn, splintered wood on the verge of collapsing from the weight of a perched bird. At the base of the sagging stoop was the frame of a crumbling, rusted bicycle, rendered useless by the rain and condensation.
Andy climbed the front steps. Two, three, four steps upward, each one creaking an undecipherable note of an ominous melody. An unraveling front door mat read “Home” in tattered, fading letters.
This isn’t so bad.
Andy winced, unable to swallow her own lie. Quickly, she found the key in the envelope before she could change her mind and turn back. The shiny silver looked brand new compared to the decrepit bronze lock on the door. Studying the door closer, she spotted the new keyhole. A stern-looking deadbolt glinting a couple of inches above what must have been the original lock.
She pushed the door open, and the weight dragged it all the way open to gently bounce off the interior wall. Andy peered inside, but her feet stayed glued to the mat outside the door. The interior contents were fuzzy in the fading light, yet she could spot the three glinting hooks on the wall for sweaters and hats. A little deeper inside was one wing of the house, and to the right was another. In the center was a semi-carpeted staircase leading upstairs, where what followed remained unseen around the corner.
There was nothing particularly extraordinary about the home. She was no expert on houses made in the ’30s and ’40s, but it looked about how she’d expect. The ceilings were low, and the wooden floor was dull. However, Andy couldn’t help but feel something was different. That there was something in plain sight she couldn’t see. She stood motionless at the door, searching for what she thought was missing. The house stood, too, waiting patiently.
