In the town of Bungay, a black dog wanders the streets, enslaving the ghosts of those who have died unnatural deaths. When Margaret arrives, these phantoms congregate at the inn, hoping she can free them from the clutches of Hugh Bigod, the 12th century ghost who has drawn them away from Heaven’s White Light in his canine guise.

Welcome to The Friday 56 hosted by Freda’s Voice.
This is a really fun meme!
The only rules are to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader and find a sentence or a few (no spoilers) that grabs you and post it.
Then go over to Freda’s Voice and leave your link so we can visit your 56!
My 56 for this week is from:
The Bothell Hell House
Poltergeist of Washington State
by Keith Linder
Genre: True haunted house story
From 56% in the eBook.
Try to think about all the moments in your house when you are most vulnerable. We’re vulnerable when we sleep, right? I think that’s the number one vulnerability for anyone living in a home. What comes to mind after that? If you’re like me, you’ll say bath or shower. One of the terrifying experiences for me took place while I was taking a shower.
~~~~~
Synopsis
True Haunted House story – 2012 Keith Linder after successfully obtaining a management position at a prestigious healthcare company decides the time is right for him and his girlfriend to move in together. That’s putting things lightly. Weird things begin to happen within days of moving into the modern suburban home. The horrors Keith and his girlfriend witnessed and desperately tried to fight off would end up putting them at odds with members of the paranormal community and themselves. This griping story, told from the house occupant point of view not only lists tales, but also includes pictures, video reenactments, commentary, and audio of the events being reported. Keith Linder does not ask that you believe him. He only asks that you listen. The Bothell Hell House has finally arrived ladies and gentlemen. The house that Zak Bagans and his team came to investigate (albeit for a short time) only to leave empty handed has come full circle. The house occupant tells his story. The complete story which includes why Zak and crew left empty handed. Spontaneous fire outbreaks and inexplicable wall writings are not the most horrific things that happened here. Something more sinister lurks.
This book was free at time of posting. Click on the link or cover above to grab a copy.
Something Deadly
by Rachel Lee
Genre: Horror / Supernatural
My Review
I was trying to figure out what it was about this book that made me love it so much.
Was it the setting? The story takes place on a secluded island. Islands are small and have secrets. Everyone knows each other’s business. And if something goes wrong, there’s nowhere to run.
Was it the characters? Being an animal lover, I couldn’t help but like Markie. She’s the new vet hired for the exclusive island. And the medical examiner, Declan, has an open mind. And I thought he was the perfect fit for Markie. And then there’s Kato, Markie’s wolf/husky companion. He and Markie have this almost spiritual connection. They seem to actually communicate with each other.
Or was it the plot? Something was preying on the inhabitants of the beautiful island. The attacks appeared random, leaving the victims hollowed out husks. The condition of the bodies defied explanation and there was no telling who would be next.
I think it was all of three of these and something more. The writing. Rachel Lee had me hooked right from the beginning. The characters could have stepped off the pages, they felt so genuine. I could visualize the island. And it was chilling to “see” the attacks.
Everything worked for me. I read this book several times, returning to it when I wanted to relax with a favorite story in between new books. This is one of those books that isn’t part of a series, but I sure wish it was.
~~~~~
Synopsis
An island of beauty becomes A GATEWAY TO TERROR…
Few could argue that the exclusive island of San Martin is anything less than paradise. In this wealthy enclave, veterinarian Markie Cross has a thriving practice, but her almost psychic connection to animals has made human relationships — especially with men — harder to navigate. Until mystery, murder and something unfathomable shatter her world…
People are dying strange, unexplained deaths. Island medical examiner Declan Quinn is stunned at the unearthly condition of the bodies, and he and Markie share a dark suspicion that something terrifying and impossible is at work here. Something that may not be human.
As a sinister message becomes clearer, Markie and Dec race to understand the tragic history of this island paradise and unlock the true nature of the evil now descending. Because if they can’t, Markie may become the next victim…

The Haunted
by Michaelbrent Collings
Genre: Horror
My Review
I’ve read several of this author’s books and he has a way of getting under my skin and giving me a good scare. This was a book I grabbed several years back. Read and enjoyed. And somehow neglected to review. It’s time to do that now.
Whether it’s the house or the people in it, I’m always up for a good haunting. And this starts haunting you right from the beginning. Don’t think it’s just another abandoned house story. I kept visualizing what was happening and this one chilled me to the bone.
There’s The Before. What Sarah refers to as the mysterious event that occurred before they moved into the new house and tried to start anew. I was so curious and the author kept the reveal just out of reach. A great hook to keep my curiosity peaked.
Then there’s the settling in to their new home. The strange, frightening occurrences begin immediately. And they just keep getting worse. Sarah and Cap are between a rock and a hard place. They can’t afford to move and they won’t be driven from their home. Even if they wanted to leave, the house won’t let them.
There you have it. A terrifying haunting. A family that can’t escape it. And then, the big reveal. The Before. I didn’t see that coming at all. And the ending. Whoa. Didn’t see that coming either.
Collings delivers with The Haunted. Just like Sarah and Cap, I couldn’t escape this book until I read the last word.
~~~~~
Synopsis
They have the beginnings of a perfect family. A husband, a wife, a baby on the way.
But something will stop them from being happy as they move into their new house: the power of the undead that roam the halls of their home.
The demons that have come to claim them. The darkness that seeks to destroy them.
The haunted.
Strange Blood: 71 Essays on Offbeat and Underrated Vampire Movies by Vanessa Morgan (ebook)
This is an overview of the most offbeat and underrated vampire movies spanning nine decades and 23 countries.
Strange Blood encompasses well-known hits as well as obscurities that differ from your standard fang fare by turning genre conventions on their head. Here, vampires come in the form of cars, pets, aliens, mechanical objects, gorillas, or floating heads. And when they do look like a demonic monster or an aristocratic Count or Countess, they break the mold in terms of imagery, style, or setting. Leading horror writers, filmmakers, actors, distributors, academics, and programmers present their favorite vampire films through in-depth essays, providing background information, analysis, and trivia regarding the various films. Some of these stories are hilarious, some are terrifying, some are touching, and some are just plain weird. Not all of these movies line up with the critical consensus, yet they have one thing in common: they are unlike anything you’ve ever seen in the world of vampires. Just when you thought that the children of the night had become a tired trope, it turns out they have quite a diverse inventory after all.
Anne Billson’s debut novel, described by Christopher Fowler in Time Out as ‘dark, sharp, chic and very funny’, is set at the end of the ‘greed is good’ era, and features a gothic love triangle between a man, a woman and the 300-year-old vampire they chopped into pieces a decade earlier.
But now she’s back, and this time she’s building a bloodsucking empire…
Peripheral Visions: The Complete Ghost Stories 1988-2015 by Robert Hood (ebook)
Peripheral Visions is a unique reference collection that includes all of Robert Hood’s 44 ghost stories to date, three of them especially written for this volume. These memorable tales display Hood’s uncanny ability to make the fantastic real, to embrace weirdness and create human characters whose lives – both inner and outer – haunted by mortality, are laid bare and revealed to be our own worst nightmares. Ranging from melancholy reflection on life and death, through disquieting tales of dark humor and vengeance, to chilling visions of ghostly apocalypse. Hood’s stories are sure to draw you into a terrifying world that in the end is revealed to be irrefutably our own. Though many of these stories draw on the traditions of the past, they are far from traditional in approach.
As you turn each page remember this: not everything here is as it seems. There’s always something more, barely glimpsed, out there on the periphery.
Each section has an evocative, disturbing illustration by noted artist, Nick Stathopoulos.
The Farm
by Amy Cross
Genre: Horror
My Review
You get two for one in this book.
It begins in 1979 when Sara and her sister come across a dead body in the river. Waiting for her sister to return with help, Sara meets a mysterious man who claims to be Death. Not long after, bad things visit the family.
Flash forward thirty years. Paula and her father move into the old abandoned farm he bought at a bargain price because of it’s tragic history. She’s excited to learn it’s rumored to be haunted and she hopes to encounter ghosts. She should have been careful what she wished for.
I’ve read many of Amy’s books and she always manages to give me the chills. She did it again with The Farm. I like reading scary books at night. You get such vibes when it’s dark out and all is still. I managed to creepy myself out as the story got darker, the two separate stories came together and the horror come out to play.
I felt a strong connection to many of the characters and that made reading about some of the horrific things that happened to them hard to swallow. I wanted to go back and change the past and to warn Paula and her father about what was really haunting the old farm.
Be prepared. This is a true horror haunting.
~~~~~
Synopsis
One farm. Two tragedies, thirty years apart. And a tortured figure whose presence connects both incidents… In 1979, the Bondalen family farm in Norway is home to three young girls. As winter fades to spring, Elizabeth, Kari and Sara each come to face the secrets of the barn, and they each emerge with their own injuries. But someone else is lurking nearby, a man who claims to be Death incarnate, and for these three girls the spring of 1979 is set to end in tragedy. Today, the farm has finally been sold to a new family. Dragged from London by her widowed father, Paula Ridley hates the idea of rural life. Soon, however, she starts to realize that her new home retains hints of its horrific past, while the darkness of the barn still awaits anyone who dares venture inside. Set over the course of several decades, The Farm is a horror novel about people who live with no idea of the terror in their midst, and about a girl who finally has to confront a creature that has been feeding on the farm’s inhabitants for generations…

The Daughters Of Temperance Hobbs
by Katherine Howe
The Daughters of Temperance Hobbs: A Novel
Occult Fiction
Henry Holt and Co. (June 25, 2019)
Hardcover: 352 pages
ISBN-10: 1250304865
ISBN-13: 978-1250304865
Kindle ASIN: B07HF3MDDH
New York Times bestselling author Katherine Howe returns to the world of The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane with a bewitching story of a New England history professor who must race against time to free her family from a curse
Connie Goodwin is an expert on America’s fractured past with witchcraft. A young, tenure-track professor in Boston, she’s earned career success by studying the history of magic in colonial America—especially women’s home recipes and medicines—and by exposing society’s threats against women fluent in those skills. But beyond her studies, Connie harbors a secret: She is the direct descendant of a woman tried as a witch in Salem, an ancestor whose abilities were far more magical than the historical record shows.
When a hint from her mother and clues from her research lead Connie to the shocking realization that her partner’s life is in danger, she must race to solve the mystery behind a hundreds’-years-long deadly curse.
Flashing back through American history to the lives of certain supernaturally gifted women, The Daughters of Temperance Hobbs affectingly reveals not only the special bond that unites one particular matriarchal line, but also explores the many challenges to women’s survival across the decades—and the risks some women are forced to take to protect what they love most.
About Author Katherine Howe
Katherine Howe is the author of the New York Times bestsellers The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane and The House of Velvet and Glass, as well as the young adult novels, Conversion and The Appearance of Annie van Sinderen. Descended from three women who were tried for witchcraft in Salem, she and her family live in New England and New York City, where she is at work on her next novel.
