Welcome to The Kid’s Korner.

I decided to do this feature as I have so many great children’s books to share. From picture books, to books for beginning readers, to middle graders, I have plenty of fun ones.

Today I’m sharing a couple of spooky fun children’s books and an interview with Author Terri Bertha!

Interview with Author Terri Bertha

Where did the idea for Spooky Twisties come from?

I started Spooky Twisties with one story about a group of kids that go out to play their annual game of ghosts in the graveyard. After reading it to critique groups and others, I was encouraged to write more. The ideas for the other stories come from everywhere, as I observe people and kids, listen to conversations and think of weird “what if” scenarios to what I notice around me.

Did you create any of your characters based on someone you know?

No, not really, but my characters are a mishmash (composite) of people’s personalities I’ve met or observed.

Do you have a writing routine and where do you do most of your writing?

I normally like to write early morning at home, when my mind is fresh. Very rarely would you find me up late at night writing. It just doesn’t flow then.

What kind of books did you enjoy as a young reader?

During grade school summers, I enjoyed making trips to the local library for Agatha Christie books, loving her mystery plot twists, and the book “To Kill A Mockingbird”. Along with Christie’s books, I was also attracted to scary psychological thriller TV shows such as The Twilight Zone, Outer Limits, and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour. Older, I enjoyed Edgar Allen Poe, James Patterson and Stephen King.

And five fun shorts:

Favorite movie? It’s a Wonderful Life

Dog or cat person? Dog (especially the Labrador retriever), but have owned both dogs and cats. We have a 5 year old fox red lab named Dexter.

Favorite beverage? A nice glass of dry red wine or a good strong cup of coffee

Cake or pie? Definitely pie. Always requested a lemon meringue pie for my birthday instead of cake.  Also enjoy coconut cream and apple.

Any Phobias? I don’t do well with heights, and I like to have my “space” around me standing in lines at the grocery store or movies.

My Review

I flew through this collection. I’m a fan of short stories and children’s scary books. Some of these were quite short. Some were longer. They go from creepy to kind of dark. Nothing so dark I wouldn’t recommend to young readers.

The author had a great idea when she had the characters enter into each others stories. The cast seems normal enough. A group of neighborhood kids hang out together. Do what kids do. Then there’s those ones that make you pause. Something isn’t quite right about them.

I grew up on a dead end street. All of us kids hung out together. Got into trouble together. But never did we have anything happen like what happens to these kids. Good thing too, or I’d need some professional help. LOL Seriously though, you might think there’s no way these kids could handle what goes down, but kids can surprise you. I believe they accept the strange and scary much better than us adults.

On a lighter note, the author dribbles in some fun dialogue and humorous scenes. The character’s feel genuine as kids say and do the funniest things.

Spooky Twisties is the perfect title for this book full of unexpected and surprising endings. Several of them had me sitting back thinking I never saw that coming.

I’d recommend this to young readers and adults. Fans who  enjoy tales similar to R. L. Stine’s Goosebump books will get a kick out of these.

Synopsis

Lindsay, Nick, Chris, Amy, and Paul are just a few of the kids in the neighborhood that enjoy each other’s company, hanging out together. From the usual antics that preteens enjoy, like playing in the graveyard, trick or treating, and celebrating birthdays, the kids find themselves in some unique situations that lead to unexpected ending twists.

Spooky Twisties I offers 13 tales of terror that will grab you from the start, and leave you with chilling surprise endings.

Adventures are speckled with humorous dialogue to frightening calls for help in working through their series of unusual encounters. Even though the chapters have individual story lines, many are intertwined with characters that are not so likable. For instance, Creepy Guy and Dan the Security Guard seem to have a ‘fixation’ for Lindsay and Amy who are best friends. Then there is old Mrs. Miller who appears to have lived on the street forever, but has found a secret to anti-aging. ‘Easter eggs’ or ‘hidden references’ mesh, and just when you think you’re headed towards a ‘fairy-tale’ ending, a strange unforeseen chilling conclusion occurs leaving the reader saying, “I didn’t see that happening!”

No happily ever after endings here.

Spooky Twisties II

13 Tales Of Terror

by Terri Bertha

Genre: Middle Grade / YA / Supernatural

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I really enjoyed the first Spooky Twisties collection and had even more fun with this next batch. It’s one weird thing after another with a humorous twist thrown in. Think Sand Lot with a spooky twist. Things that go bump in the night instead of a huge dog chasing you.

The author is up to her usual antics. The character’s are interwoven into each other’s stories. They have to deal with some strange goings on. And the endings are never what you expect.

And the book cover. How could young horror fans resist. As a young girl I spent hours in the library looking for covers like this. Then I’d race home and lose myself in the creepiness. Couldn’t resist them then and still can’t now.

I had such a blast with these stories. And I’d be hard pressed to pick a favorite. They were suspenseful with just the right amount of spooky for the younger reader. Made me wish my son was still little so we could read them together. I did the next best thing. I had him read them after I was finished and we compared our favorites. It made me want to read them all again.

Creative. Spooky. Humorous. Unpredictable. Perfect ingredients for fun.

Synopsis

What happens when your average suburban town becomes a nexus of the paranormal and occult and no one told you about it?

Spooky Twisties II is the second book in the Spooky Twisties Series offering 13 standalone yet interconnected ‘scary’ short stories continuing the supernatural adventures of Amy, Nick, Chris, Lindsay and their friends.

Follow the horror and humor as the kids encounter and work through more unexplainable weird events in what was once an ideal normal community. From deciphering an old map and learning about an old town rumor, finding a briefcase of money, babysitting a small boy who has some strange habits, and being revisited by ‘old friend’, lead the tweens into some bizarre, creepy dilemmas. The kids also learn that magic sets and items bought from the town psychic have greater powers than what they originally imagined.

‘Easter eggs’ or ‘hidden references’ tie these tales together along with ‘twisted’ endings, leaving the reader saying, “I didn’t think that was going to happen!”

Don’t be afraid, as I’ll hold your hand and together we’ll re-enter their Spooky world, with a Twist!

Gaelan’s War

Gaelan Kelly #1

by

37661955

Genre:  Horror / Thriller / Supernatural

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

Gaelan returns from the war only to have to fight another one at home. Dumped by his girlfriend and disillusioned, his parent’s take him on a trip to boost him up. What happens next is straight out of a horror movie and Gaelan will stop at nothing to avenge the horrific death of his parents.

I’d suggest you set aside some time when you start this book. It hooks you quickly and you’ll find it hard to stop once you start. From horror to vengeance, it doesn’t let up.

Gaelan is a damaged man. Up against a foe that defies belief, he sets a course to get his revenge. I’m big on character driven stories and I think Gaelan’s journey to accept what he’s up against and use it to further his vengeance was my favorite part of the story. It kept me focused and eager to see how he put his experience to work and used things to his advantage.

I see this is the author’s debut novel. Sure doesn’t read like it. The writing is strong and the plot and character development are excellent.

A character study as much as a horror thriller, I was delighted by this first book and excited to know there will be more. If you enjoy a good thriller with some horror thrown in, along with some beasts that will give you the shivers, you ought to try this one.

The One Apart
by Justine Avery
Genre:Fantasy, Supernatural Thriller
Only one obstacle stands in his
way of enjoying a normal life. He remembers—every life he’s lived
before.
Tres is about to be born… with the
biggest burden any has ever had to bear. He is beginning again—as
an ageless adult trapped in an infant body.
He and his teenage mother face life
filled with extraordinary challenges as they strive to protect,
nurture, and hide how truly different he is. But Tres alone must
solve the greatest mystery of all: who is he? The answer is linked to
the one question he’s too afraid to ask: why am I?
In his quest, Tres discovers that all
is considerably more interconnected and dynamic than he could ever
imagine—and fraught with far more danger. He cannot hide from the
unseen threat stalking him since his birth.
Life as he knows it—as all know it—is
in peril. And Tres is the only one aware.
Justine Avery is
an award-winning author of stories large and small for all.
Born in the American Midwest and raised all over the world, she is
inherently an explorer, duly fascinated by everything around her and
excitedly noting the stories that abound all around. As an avid
reader of all genres, she weaves her own stories among them all. She
has a predilection for writing speculative fiction and story twists
and surprises she can’t even predict herself.
Avery has either
lived in or explored all 50 states of the union, over 36 countries,
and all but one continent; she lost count after moving 30-some times
before the age of 20. She’s intentionally jumped out of
airplanes and off the highest bungee jump in New Zealand, scuba dived
unintentionally with sharks, designed websites, intranets, and
technical manuals, bartered with indigenous Panamanians, welded
automobile frames, observed at the Bujinkan Hombu Dojo in Noba,
Japan, and masterminded prosperous internet businesses—to name a
few adventures. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree that life has
never required, and at age 28, she sold everything she owned and quit
corporate life—and her final “job”—to freelance and travel
the world as she always dreamed of. And she’s never looked back.
 Aside from
her native English, Avery speaks a bit of Japanese and a bit more
Spanish, her accent is an ever-evolving mixture of Midwestern
American with notes of the Deep South and indiscriminate British
vocabulary and rhythm, and she says “eh”—like the Kiwis, not
the Canadians. She currently lives near Los Angeles with her husband,
British film director Devon Avery, and their three adopted children:
Becks, Sam, and Lia. She writes from wherever her curiosity takes
her.

Deep Dark Secrets
(The Spiritwalkers #1)

by Sarra Cannon
Young Adult Supernatural Mystery

ebook, 321 pages
August 23rd 2017 by Dead River Books, LLC

The deadliest secrets are the ones we keep from ourselves…

One year ago, seventeen-year-old Marayah Freeman nearly died in a tragic car accident that also took the life of her best friend, Hailey.

Memories of the accident plague Marayah, but no one believes they’re real. They say there was no shadowy figure on the bridge that night. No oil-black tears running down Hailey’s face. No guy who appeared from a bright light in the forest.

Frustrated, Marayah locks those memories away and tries to focus on the future, but the past keeps pulling her back. A guy who looks like the stranger from the forest enrolls in her school, and her nightmares are getting worse. But when she finds a note in her locker, the mystery of the accident becomes more terrifying than ever. The note is from Hailey.

“Marayah,

If I’m dead—

it wasn’t an accident.”

Excerpt
.

He was real. And he was gorgeous.

I straightened and walked toward him, but the closer I got, the more I realized that he wasn’t quite the guy from my dreams. I shook my head, unable to make sense of it. He had the same tall, muscular build. The same copper skin and dark eyes. The braid running down his back was exactly the same as the one I’d seen in my dreams.

But his face was slightly different. Younger with higher cheekbones.

Those eyes, though.

The way he stared at me sent shivers across my skin. His eyes were the same.

“Did you follow me?” he asked, glancing toward the school.

“Yes,” I said, working to catch my breath and still my heart. “Sorry, I can’t explain it. I thought you were someone else.”

My hand raised to the medallion at my throat, and his eyes followed. His gaze narrowed. Darkened. His jaw tensed.

“Who?” he asked.

“What?” He had me completely frazzled. There was something incredibly intense about him, and it turned my brain to mush.

“Who did you think I was?”

I shook my head and my cheeks warmed. He looked angry, and I guess I couldn’t blame him. We were complete strangers, and I’d just chased him down.

“I don’t know,” I said, letting my hand drop to my side. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to bother you.”

I turned to head back to the school, embarrassed and confused. Maybe I was going crazy.

“Wait,” he said. “You’re her, aren’t you? The girl from the accident? You’re Marayah?”

I stopped and turned back slowly. Something about the way my name sounded on his lips was so familiar, it made me dizzy.

“How do you know about me?” I asked.

He shrugged, but his dark eyes stayed sharp as he stared at my face. “A lot of people have been talking about you,” he said. “Wondering if you would be coming back to school this year.”

“Do you go to school here?” I asked.

“I just transferred,” he said, not offering any further information.

“Oh.” If he’d just moved here, he couldn’t possibly have been there that night a year ago. Still, this couldn’t be a coincidence. “Well, I’m sorry I chased you down.”

I wanted to turn and walk away, but something about the way he looked at me held me to the spot. He was a stranger, but I felt he knew a lot more about me than he was saying.

“I have to go,” he said finally. His eyes dipped again to the medallion at my throat, but he didn’t say another word. He simply got into his truck and drove away.

“Who are you?” I whispered, but he was too far away to hear.

Shadowchild
by Matthew Williams
Genre: Horror

34413697

My Review

I’m always looking for a new supernatural horror story and Shadowchild caught my interest. Besides the killer title, just look at that awesome cover art. How’s a girl to resist!

After a bit of a rough start, I fell into this creepy supernatural story and enjoyed it quite a bit. The rough start was no biggy, I just got irritated by one of the character’s. She used ‘love’ to address her daughter and it got so repetitive. It seemed every time she addressed her, that word was used. Later, it was used sparingly and worked quite well.

Now for the good stuff. I’ve watched plenty of stories about possessions and people being haunted. What came to my mind while reading this was The Omen and Children Of The Damned. Not so much that the movies were similar in plot, it was how eerie they were.  Evil kids scare me more than just about anything.

The author ties in the modern events with something horrific that happened back in the 1600’s. It explains a lot as things get dark, scary, and outright gory.  I’m sure you’ve heard that saying, “Not for the faint of heart?” That covers this book nicely. I’m used to gore. I love zombie novels after all. But I squirmed at some scenes. I felt they were important to get the story across, but they went down hard.

I kept expecting a break in intensity, but once the story really gets rolling, it never stops. And the ending. Wow. I wish I could tell you, but you’ll have to read the book and experience it yourself. I’ll definitely read more by this author. I have one of his other books which is featured in this post, The Shady Corner. I’ll be diving into it soon.

Chosen
R.S. Broadhead
(The Urban Legends Series)
Publication date: October 24th 2017
Genres: New Adult, Supernatural, Thriller

My Review

First off, I fell in love with the cover for Chosen. How fantastically chilling. I had high hopes the book would be as creepy as the cover. Got my wish.

Fans of urban legends and horror that gives you goose bumps and makes you jump at those little noises from somewhere out of sight will love this one.

Piper had a rough childhood with an abusive father. After his unusual death she goes to live with her grandfather. She grows up and moves away, becomes a reporter, has a loving fiance and a happy life. Then a mysterious man starts following her and strange events happen. Something dark stalks her, terrifying her at every turn.

When she receives word that her grandfather passed away, she heads back home to Alabama to bury him. There’s a mix up about the funeral and she travels to Hell, the town, not the place down below. But Hell feels like hell. As horrific things continue to escalate, she fears for her life. Secrets are revealed about her family, and the towns denizens won’t let her leave.

This one starts out creepy and never stops. And it reads very visually. I drew from movies like Silent Hill, The Grudge and The Ring to see many of the scenes. As if the author hadn’t already done it, I succeeded in scaring myself silly.

This is my first book by R.S. Broadhead but it wont be my last. Looking for something to scare you and get you in the mood for Halloween? Grab this one. It’ll do the job and then some.

Synopsis

Black eyes. No emotion. No sympathy. Only emptiness.

Piper McAdams’s life was normal. Career? Check. Boyfriend? Check. Friends? Check. One unsettling run in with a homeless man turns everything from normal to terrifying. She begins seeing…things.

Things she can’t seem to explain or make any sense.

As if things aren’t already getting out of hand, Piper receives news that the only family member she has is dead. She thinks maybe a trip across the country to her hometown will get her away from all the strange events happening.

After a late night accident, Piper isn’t in her hometown burying her loved one. She’s in a town called Hell. All she wants to do is leave, but the people seem to be holding her there for some reason.

A reason she feels threatens her life. Around every corner things become darker and scarier.

Can she escape what is coming for her?
