The One Apart
by Justine Avery
Genre:Fantasy, Supernatural Thriller
Only one obstacle stands in his
way of enjoying a normal life. He remembers—every life he’s lived
before.
Tres is about to be born… with the
biggest burden any has ever had to bear. He is beginning again—as
an ageless adult trapped in an infant body.
He and his teenage mother face life
filled with extraordinary challenges as they strive to protect,
nurture, and hide how truly different he is. But Tres alone must
solve the greatest mystery of all: who is he? The answer is linked to
the one question he’s too afraid to ask: why am I?
In his quest, Tres discovers that all
is considerably more interconnected and dynamic than he could ever
imagine—and fraught with far more danger. He cannot hide from the
unseen threat stalking him since his birth.
Life as he knows it—as all know it—is
in peril. And Tres is the only one aware.

an award-winning author of stories large and small for all.
Born in the American Midwest and raised all over the world, she is
inherently an explorer, duly fascinated by everything around her and
excitedly noting the stories that abound all around. As an avid

has a predilection for writing speculative fiction and story twists
and surprises she can’t even predict herself.
Avery has either

and all but one continent; she lost count after moving 30-some times
before the age of 20. She’s intentionally jumped out of
airplanes and off the highest bungee jump in New Zealand, scuba dived
unintentionally with sharks, designed websites, intranets, and
technical manuals, bartered with indigenous Panamanians, welded
automobile frames, observed at the Bujinkan Hombu Dojo in Noba,
Japan, and masterminded prosperous internet businesses—to name a
few adventures. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree that life has
never required, and at age 28, she sold everything she owned and quit
corporate life—and her final “job”—to freelance and travel
the world as she always dreamed of. And she’s never looked back.
 Aside from
her native English, Avery speaks a bit of Japanese and a bit more
Spanish, her accent is an ever-evolving mixture of Midwestern
American with notes of the Deep South and indiscriminate British

Deep Dark Secrets
(The Spiritwalkers #1)

by Sarra Cannon
Young Adult Supernatural Mystery

ebook, 321 pages
August 23rd 2017 by Dead River Books, LLC

The deadliest secrets are the ones we keep from ourselves…

One year ago, seventeen-year-old Marayah Freeman nearly died in a tragic car accident that also took the life of her best friend, Hailey.

Memories of the accident plague Marayah, but no one believes they’re real. They say there was no shadowy figure on the bridge that night. No oil-black tears running down Hailey’s face. No guy who appeared from a bright light in the forest.

Frustrated, Marayah locks those memories away and tries to focus on the future, but the past keeps pulling her back. A guy who looks like the stranger from the forest enrolls in her school, and her nightmares are getting worse. But when she finds a note in her locker, the mystery of the accident becomes more terrifying than ever. The note is from Hailey.

“Marayah,

If I’m dead—

it wasn’t an accident.”

Excerpt
.

He was real. And he was gorgeous.

I straightened and walked toward him, but the closer I got, the more I realized that he wasn’t quite the guy from my dreams. I shook my head, unable to make sense of it. He had the same tall, muscular build. The same copper skin and dark eyes. The braid running down his back was exactly the same as the one I’d seen in my dreams.

But his face was slightly different. Younger with higher cheekbones.

Those eyes, though.

The way he stared at me sent shivers across my skin. His eyes were the same.

“Did you follow me?” he asked, glancing toward the school.

“Yes,” I said, working to catch my breath and still my heart. “Sorry, I can’t explain it. I thought you were someone else.”

My hand raised to the medallion at my throat, and his eyes followed. His gaze narrowed. Darkened. His jaw tensed.

“Who?” he asked.

“What?” He had me completely frazzled. There was something incredibly intense about him, and it turned my brain to mush.

“Who did you think I was?”

I shook my head and my cheeks warmed. He looked angry, and I guess I couldn’t blame him. We were complete strangers, and I’d just chased him down.

“I don’t know,” I said, letting my hand drop to my side. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to bother you.”

I turned to head back to the school, embarrassed and confused. Maybe I was going crazy.

“Wait,” he said. “You’re her, aren’t you? The girl from the accident? You’re Marayah?”

I stopped and turned back slowly. Something about the way my name sounded on his lips was so familiar, it made me dizzy.

“How do you know about me?” I asked.

He shrugged, but his dark eyes stayed sharp as he stared at my face. “A lot of people have been talking about you,” he said. “Wondering if you would be coming back to school this year.”

“Do you go to school here?” I asked.

“I just transferred,” he said, not offering any further information.

“Oh.” If he’d just moved here, he couldn’t possibly have been there that night a year ago. Still, this couldn’t be a coincidence. “Well, I’m sorry I chased you down.”

I wanted to turn and walk away, but something about the way he looked at me held me to the spot. He was a stranger, but I felt he knew a lot more about me than he was saying.

“I have to go,” he said finally. His eyes dipped again to the medallion at my throat, but he didn’t say another word. He simply got into his truck and drove away.

“Who are you?” I whispered, but he was too far away to hear.

Shadowchild
by Matthew Williams
Genre: Horror

34413697

My Review

I’m always looking for a new supernatural horror story and Shadowchild caught my interest. Besides the killer title, just look at that awesome cover art. How’s a girl to resist!

After a bit of a rough start, I fell into this creepy supernatural story and enjoyed it quite a bit. The rough start was no biggy, I just got irritated by one of the character’s. She used ‘love’ to address her daughter and it got so repetitive. It seemed every time she addressed her, that word was used. Later, it was used sparingly and worked quite well.

Now for the good stuff. I’ve watched plenty of stories about possessions and people being haunted. What came to my mind while reading this was The Omen and Children Of The Damned. Not so much that the movies were similar in plot, it was how eerie they were.  Evil kids scare me more than just about anything.

The author ties in the modern events with something horrific that happened back in the 1600’s. It explains a lot as things get dark, scary, and outright gory.  I’m sure you’ve heard that saying, “Not for the faint of heart?” That covers this book nicely. I’m used to gore. I love zombie novels after all. But I squirmed at some scenes. I felt they were important to get the story across, but they went down hard.

I kept expecting a break in intensity, but once the story really gets rolling, it never stops. And the ending. Wow. I wish I could tell you, but you’ll have to read the book and experience it yourself. I’ll definitely read more by this author. I have one of his other books which is featured in this post, The Shady Corner. I’ll be diving into it soon.

Chosen
R.S. Broadhead
(The Urban Legends Series)
Publication date: October 24th 2017
Genres: New Adult, Supernatural, Thriller

My Review

First off, I fell in love with the cover for Chosen. How fantastically chilling. I had high hopes the book would be as creepy as the cover. Got my wish.

Fans of urban legends and horror that gives you goose bumps and makes you jump at those little noises from somewhere out of sight will love this one.

Piper had a rough childhood with an abusive father. After his unusual death she goes to live with her grandfather. She grows up and moves away, becomes a reporter, has a loving fiance and a happy life. Then a mysterious man starts following her and strange events happen. Something dark stalks her, terrifying her at every turn.

When she receives word that her grandfather passed away, she heads back home to Alabama to bury him. There’s a mix up about the funeral and she travels to Hell, the town, not the place down below. But Hell feels like hell. As horrific things continue to escalate, she fears for her life. Secrets are revealed about her family, and the towns denizens won’t let her leave.

This one starts out creepy and never stops. And it reads very visually. I drew from movies like Silent Hill, The Grudge and The Ring to see many of the scenes. As if the author hadn’t already done it, I succeeded in scaring myself silly.

This is my first book by R.S. Broadhead but it wont be my last. Looking for something to scare you and get you in the mood for Halloween? Grab this one. It’ll do the job and then some.

Shallow Graves

The Haunted #1

by Patrick Logan

32509098

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre:  Horror / Supernatural

My Review

It seems like too much for Robert Walker. He’s lost his wife. He’s lost his job. He’s about to lose his house. How will he take care of his daughter, Amy? Where will they go?

Just when it seems like all hope is lost, Robert is given a life preserver. Sean, a mysterious stranger, knocks on his door and presents him with a letter. An aunt unbeknownst to him requests he come take care of her in her last days. If he does this, he’ll inherit her entire estate. What aunt? He’s not aware he had one. But, with the prospect of being homeless looming, he decides to check out the offer. It can’t get any worse, can it?

Oh boy. I might not have seen this author’s spin coming, but I’ve sure read plenty of books and watched many movies with similar situations. I could anticipate all kinds of ways it could get worse. Wish I could tell you how bad it got, but that spoiler thing, ya know.

I liked Robert, He was in a tough situation but his daughter, Amy, was his first priority and he did everything possible to provide for her and keep her safe. Too bad the house had other things in mind.

The story sometimes reads disjointed. When this first happened I was worried. But I quickly discovered it read that way because I was actually in Robert’s shoes, going through the eerie events as him. Once I caught onto that, it actually made this even more crazy. At one point my nerves were so jangled. Things go so sideways for Robert, and I felt his despair and desperation.

Other characters enter the story as you get to the meat of it. They play some crucial roles in this stories ending and I expect they will keep contributing with each new book. My imagination comes into play and I’m excited to see how the author spins it. Especially after the surprise ending for Shallow Graves.

Synopsis

Not all houses are made of brick and stone… Robert Watts is having the worst day of his entire life: first he’s laid off, then he finds out that his wife is having an affair… with his boss no less. And that’s only the beginning.

Before the month is out, Robert finds himself alone to raise his daughter with no money, no job, and a house that is minutes from being repossessed. Just when he hits rock bottom, a strange visitor arrives at the doorstep of his soon to be foreclosed house with a letter from an Aunt he didn’t know existed.

The offer is simple: look after Aunt Ruth during her dying days, and in return Robert will be bequeathed the Harlop Estate in which she currently resides. It’s a no brainer and Robert jumps at the opportunity, equally motivated by the prospect of financial security as he is for a fresh start.

Problem is, it only takes a few nights in the Harlop Estate before he begins to question Aunt Ruth’s claims that they are the home’s only inhabitants…

It’s the scratching he hears during the night, the voices that he can barely make out over the constant rain, and then there’s the girl with the rat…

With their house foreclosed and their bank accounts liquidated, Robert and his daughter Amy desperately need a place to live. But the question Robert soon finds himself struggling with is whether living in the Harlop Estate is worth it… and if he can survive until Aunt Ruth passes to collect his inheritance.

Shallow Graves is the first book in the Haunted Series, chilling, gruesome, and truly haunting tales with a twist that you will never see coming.

My Review

Between the great cover art and thrilling blurb, I knew this could be a good book, and it was.

It seems like an ordinary night. Well, aside from the hurricane that’s blowing in, ready to devastate everything in its path. Power will go out, leaving all in darkness. But it’s no ordinary darkness. It’s taken on a life of its own. Forms attack, killing millions. The only weapon is light. And with the storm, there won’t be any once the power grids go down.

Michael isn’t prepared. How could he be? And his girlfriend is out there somewhere. He has to find her. Save her. So he heads out into the dark. Along the way, he hooks up with some friends and strangers. None of them know what’s happening. They just know the darkness kills. What caused it? Why? They may not live to find out.

I was reading this book while tracking Hurricane Irma, watching Florida get hammered by the very conditions described in it. It sure did make my imagination run wild. The lights go out. The wind howls. Things start crashing into your house. You can’t see what’s coming. And then it starts to flood. The water rises. That’s truly scary. Even scarier is the darkness becoming corporeal. being able to touch you. To hurt and kill you.

And, as with all things human, when disaster strikes the good come together and help each other, and the bad crawl out from under their rocks to wreak havoc. As bands of survivors struggle to stay alive, to keep some form of light on to ward off the things in the dark, they also have to contend with others who want what they have.

I think the author did a good job of giving us realistic characters and came up with some twisted scenarios that were believable. It was easy to picture and made things edgy, creepy.

Definitely a book I recommend you read at night. If you aren’t afraid of the dark now, you could be once you’ve read it.

Synopsis

When night falls in Giger, Texas, shadows gather as they always do in dim corners and other areas bereft of light.  But this time they consolidate and attack any who tread too close. Michael Warren, a twenty-four-year-old resident of Giger, finds himself at the epicenter of this horror and is stunned by the losses suffered overnight.  Then the sun sets and the shadows again coalesce, growing more aggressive, the darkness eviscerating anyone it touches.

His only weapon light, Michael struggles to survive and searches frantically for his girlfriend, aiding friends along the way.  When Hurricane Daniel roars ashore, wind gusts shred trees and tear down power lines, plunging all of Southeastern Texas into blackness that only feeds and strengthens the encroaching darkness.  Rising floodwater provides easy thoroughfares from which the darkness can strike as Michael and his friends contend with the elements, clash with criminals, and battle their way to his residence where they will stand against the darkness and fight to survive.

Enjoy this excerpt:

Startled, Eddie blinked and wiped at his own eyes. “What was…? Hello?”

No answer.

His pulse picked up. “C-Curt, you in here… you a-a-a-asshole?”

A box fell behind him.

Eddie spun around, body tight as a knot, eyes wide as their sockets would allow. “Wh-h-h-h-who the hell’s that?” he demanded with as much sternness as he could inject into his quivering voice.

Soft whispers trickled out of a minuscule pocket of emptiness near the back door on the farthest wall. There, amid the gloom, something progressed toward him. At first, its movements appeared mechanical, inelastic. Then it evolved into a smooth flow. A soft ripple. A consolidated wave of darkness.

I’ve read a bunch of Kathryn’s books and enjoyed them all. From man eating dinosaurs, to witches and other strange beings, it’s always a wild ride. I’ve got another good one to share today.

The Calling

by Kathryn Meyer Griffith

1957917

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Mystery / Horror / Paranormal

 My Review

Kathryn is quite skillful at pulling me out of my mundane world and dropping me into one of hers. This time it’s Egypt. The land of queens and pharaohs, pyramids and ancient mysteries.

Faye and her husband, Nick, are ideal partners. They share a strong work ethic and a love of music.  Their happy existence is soon shattered and sends them across the world to Egypt where they must solve an ancient mystery and face unspeakable perils.

Faye’s visions become stronger. The pleas of the long dead Egyptian princess will no longer be ignored. Sounds intriguing doesn’t it? I’m a sucker for this type of scenario. A modern woman haunted by a ghost from long ago.  Faye is a strong character. She’s well grounded despite the haunting visions, loves her husband, and is surrounded by friends that share her passion for music. Take out the visions and she sounds a lot like me in my younger days. Made her very likable and easy to relate to.

Nick adores Faye. Shares her passions. And when he gets a peek into one of her visions, he doesn’t hesitate to drop everything and follow her to Egypt. Nick is my kind of guy. Loyal, loving, and all alpha when it’s required. I loved him and Faye as a couple.

Ankhesenaton has been haunting Faye ever since Faye died and came back. She needs her help to find justice for the murder of her and her family. When I read the part about what happened to her, it brought sadness and anger. I wanted Ankhesenaton to get her justice. And maybe a good dose of vengeance too.

I enjoy traveling through reading and the author is masterful in her visual descriptions. You see the immense pyramids. Feel the heat of the desert and the abrasive sand blown against your exposed skin. I was awed and thirsty at the same time.

This story reads fast. Starts out ordinary as you meet the main characters. Moves into a ghostly mystery. And then drops you into the heat and dust of Egypt, where things you can’t imagine come to light. As with many of her books, Katherine doesn’t hesitate to put her characters in peril and she often lets them perish. This added to the suspense as I really wanted Faye and Nick to survive. I crossed my fingers and hoped for the best but prepared for the worst.

A haunting mystery, some time travel, and plenty of action and suspense with a dash or two of horror. If you enjoy any of that, you should read The Calling.

So this is it. The final book in the Onyx Webb series. I was so excited to read it and sad at the same time. I very much enjoyed the books, reading what was happening with the characters and anticipating what would come next. And now I’ve found out how it all ends. I won’t go into details about events in the book. It’s the tenth one, after all, and the synopsis gives you an idea. Instead, I’ll tell you how I felt.

To be honest, I wasn’t too sure about this series. The fist book took me a while to get the hang of. But once I did, I was swept up in a story that spans generations for ten books. Yes, ten. And each one drew me further in, had me waiting anxiously for the next and the next….. So many secrets, so much horror, so much hope.

There are usually 3 episodes per book, but in this final one the authors included an extra episode. I could see why as I read them. Bringing the past and the present and the characters together at the end and answering all questions to wrap up this series right, the extra episode was needed so things didn’t feel rushed and just crammed together.

And even though there wasn’t as much horror and action as the previous books, there was enough suspense, plus my own curiosity, to make this a terrific finale. Also, with so many characters with fascinating stories of their own, I do hope the author gives them there own place to shine. Maybe their own books. There’s so much more I’d like to know about what happens to them.

I mentioned in some reviews of earlier books that Onyx Webb is addictive. I don’t see me finding a cure any time soon. An epic and often horrific saga that still lingers.

5 Stars

Thanks so much Richard and Andrea. It’s been a strange and wonderful adventure. And thanks for keeping your promise to keep the books coming!

Alex Stone wants to pretend the supernatural doesn’t exist.

As the owner of a hot new clothing line, the only thing she’s killing is her competition – until she gets a phone call from her past. As the Dagger, she was a member of the covert ops team tasked with hunting threats of the supernatural kind. For the super soldiers of Night Command, the rules were simple: take the pills, fight the bad guys, and live to tell no one. After putting a bad-ass vampire on ice landed her in a padded cell, Alex thought she’d left the hunting game for good. Now she’s in the orbit of a handsome vampire with a problem. And sometimes keeping secrets bites.

Jason Stavros has the best of everything and life eternal. To the human world, Jason was just a poor boy who made it to the top. For a human turned vampire, the fight for a place in the inner circle of the ruling class hinges on one task: convince the best ex-vampire hunting assassin to become his personal bodyguard and save them all.

Join Alex, Jason and a new team of young hunters as two worlds unite against a common enemy. As the body count begins to rise, Alex and the Tracker Team fight friends and enemies to find the answers they seek.

She enjoyed seeing those chains of pure silver wrapped around the vampire’s scrawny arms like tattoos. He barely resembled the picture of the old parish priest the Cardinal sent them two weeks ago. His brown skin hung from his bones like an ill-fitting suit. His paunch bounced up and down as he struggled to get loose. It took longer to catch him, much longer than it should have, but all’s well that ends well.

Alex Stone, call-sign Dagger, ran her fingers through her dark hair. Flakes of dried blood and sand fell as she pulled the dirty mess into a ponytail. Benjamin Palmer, Team Commander, snatched her wounded hand back down and tightened the field dressing as he griped at her about how dumb it was to try to catch the sharp end of a knife with her hand. She knew that . . . now.

“Who do you think you are,” he said as he gave the knot one last yank, “Superman?” Ben checked her busted lip with a shake of his head. “That’s gonna hurt like hell till morning.”

Alex just nodded, taking the pills in her good hand and swallowing them with a quick sip of warm water from his canteen.

Under normal circumstances, Alex would be pulled from the field, evaluated and possibly scrubbed from the next assignment for that stunt. But time was running out and this wasn’t normal, not even for the top vampire hunting team in the country.
