West Of Dead

A Nathaniel Caine Adventure #1

by  Eric Bahle

15724270

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Western Horror/Zombies

From 56% in the eBook.

Lucas dashed to the rear door and opened it a crack. When he saw the stage blocking the way, he threw the door wide and opened the coach. There was a hollow-eyed face in the opposite window, and Lucas put a bullet hole through the middle of it before climbing in the stage.

It’s bad enough to face a zombie hoard in an automobile. Can you imagine how bad it would be in a stagecoach pulled by horses. If the zombies get to the horses, you won’t be going anywhere. And there are no windows or sturdy doors to keep the hungry zombies out!

Read on if you want to know more.

~~~~~
Synopsis
Fans of Joe R. Lansdale, Robert Davis, and Adam Millard will love this fast paced tale of the Weird West.
What good is a six-shooter against a horde of the undead?
Nathaniel Caine wants to forget the War and see the frontier, and a trip by stagecoach seems like the perfect way. When the stage pulls into a deserted way station with obvious signs of violence, but a disturbing lack of bodies, he suspects things are going bad. Things go from bad to worse when the passengers fall under attack by people that should be dead, and Caine must call on old skills just to survive. He’ll also need the help of a fellow passenger who knows more than he’s telling if the restless dead are to be put back in the ground.
The Overnight
by Ramsey Campbell
32458
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
Genre: Horror
My 56 from the paperback.
He reminds himself what a joy it was to be able to read a book, one a day sometimes, but the memory falls short of his feelings; it’s as though greyness like a combination of fog and cobwebs has settled over his brain.
Read on if you want to know more.
~~~~~

Synopsis

The bookstore’s shelves are put in order every night, but every morning, books are found lying all over the floor, many damp and damaged beyond repair. The store’s computers keep acting up, and even when the machines are off, they seem to glow with a spectral gray light.
Things soon go from bad to worse. A salesclerk abruptly loses his ability to read. One employee accuses another of making sexual advances. A hit-and-run in the parking lot claims a life. The security monitors display half-seen things crawling between the stacks.
Desperate to pass a company inspection, the manager musters his staff for an overnight inventory. When the last customers reluctantly depart, leaving almost-visible trails of slime shining behind them, the doors are locked, sealing the staff inside for a final orgy of shelving.
The damp, grey, silent things that have been lurking in the basement and hiding in the fog may move slowly, but they are inexorable. This bookstore is the doorway to a hell unlike any other.

A Monster Calls

by Patrick Ness

8621462

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: YA Fantasy

My 56 from the hard cover.

Conor glanced again at the monster’s massive arms and legs, and its raggedy, toothy smile, at its overwhelming monstrousness.

The story, said the monster, is not yet finished.

Read on if you want to know more.

My Review

This was an unexpected surprise. I was anticipating a horror story. Instead, I got a story of bravery, loss, hope, and a journey to acceptance.

Conor’s under attack. Not from the monster of his dreams. From an ancient one. It wants something from Conor and wreaks havoc, terrorizing him and threatening those around him. It wants the truth and will not stop until Conor gives it to him.

I spotted this book on a blog. I was curious when she mentioned it being something other than what it sounded like, and I wanted to see the illustrations. I was lucky when I discovered the library had a copy available and drove to get it straight away.

Not so much horror as a journey, the monster was terrifying, but the journey was more so. Especially for Conor.

He must face and accept what’s coming. So much for such a young boy. Conor rages against it. Stands up to the monster. Acts out in terrible ways. But he can’t outrun what must happen.

My 21 year old son read this book and described it as magical, majestic.

I read it in one sitting, taking in the wonderful illustrations, relishing every word, and feeling every emotion.

One for all ages. A light in the darkness.

5 Stars

~~~~~
Synopsis
The monster showed up after midnight. As they do.
But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting. He’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming…
This monster is something different, though. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.
It wants the truth.
By Book Or By Crook
A Lighthouse Library Mystery #1
by Eva Gates
c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack
Genre: Cozy Mystery
My 56 from page 65 in the paperback. Page 56 didn’t have anything.
Here I was, in my gorgeous lighthouse aerie, living above a library, a classic novel in my hands, the rest of my beloved books only an arm’s reach away. Not to mention a full collection of Jane Austen first editions on my desk. And I couldn’t concentrate.
Doesn’t this sound like a dream come true!! Well, except for not being able to concentrate. LOL
Read on if you want to know more.
~~~~~

Synopsis

Get bound up in murder in the first Lighthouse Library mystery!

For ten years Lucy has enjoyed her job poring over rare tomes of literature for the Harvard Library, but she has not enjoyed the demands of her family’s social whorl or her sort-of-engagement to the staid son of her father’s law partner. But when her ten-year relationship implodes, Lucy realizes that the plot of her life is in need of a serious rewrite.

Calling on her aunt Ellen, Lucy hopes that a little fun in the Outer Banks sun—and some confections from her cousin Josie’s bakery—will help clear her head. But her retreat quickly turns into an unexpected opportunity when Aunt Ellen gets her involved in the lighthouse library tucked away on Bodie Island.

Lucy is thrilled to land a librarian job in her favorite place in the world. But when a priceless first edition Jane Austen novel is stolen and the chair of the library board is murdered, Lucy suddenly finds herself ensnared in a real-life mystery—and she’s not so sure there’s going to be a happy ending….

by Lilith Saintcrow

Genre: Urban Fantasy

My 56 from the paperback.

The water was knee-high and I splashed through…it’d been a hell of a fall.

Smells like something’s dead down here. Lovely.

I hate this sort of thing. The sludge started getting deeper, and the tunnel slanted downhill. I really hate this sort of thing.

Read on if you want to know more.

My Review

I picked this up at my local used book store. The cover grabbed me right away. And the blurb sold me.

Kick butt female protagonist. Creatures of all shapes and sizes to be slain. Count me in.

I had a blast. Jill is very genuine, flaws and all. And the way she faces and takes down the evil beings keeps you on edge, flipping pages, cheering her on. From the mean streets to the sewers below, she hunts.

As for those creatures, you’ll encounter some really bad ones. I’m all about the nastier the better and there were some great ones in these pages.

The writing is fast paced and reads easily, and there are some interesting characters, good and bad. Plus a bit of romance. Nothing to cast a shadow over the action, just enough to make you smile.

For fans of Urban Fantasy, you’ll get what you’re looking for in this book. I’ll be following the series, anticipating more intense action and scary good creatures for Jill to take down.
