His hold on her dropped for mere seconds, and this was all the time she needed. She ran, trying not to think how much faster a bullet flew when compared to the speed of her skinny legs.

“You want a tour, then?”

She nodded, grateful for the delay.

Luca took her hand and proceeded to tow her from room to room at high speed, prattling all the way.

“This is the study, but I rarely use it. Too many books. Claustrophobic.”

“Through here is the dining room, which again I don’t use.”

Luca grinned at her and took the stairs two at a time. Reilla had to run to keep up.

“But we’re going to use this room, here.”

He pulled open the doors to reveal the master bedroom.

“Hey. Are you all right? It’s only a bed, not a torture device.”

Slowly Luca guided her to sit down on the bed, then knelt in front of her.

“See? It doesn’t bite.”

Using the crevice too, I retrieve the squirrel. It’s too tattered to donate to the Humane Society, so I decide to keep it.When I get up to go put it with his box of ashes, it squeaks.

I almost drop it. It hasn’t squeaked since it was new. Barnum and I played tug-the-squirrel almost every night and it never made a sound. I try to make it squeak again, but can’t.

Jeffrey’s words come to mind, talking about pennies, or other signs. What was it he said? It’s a message that “let’s you know your loved one’s okay.” Something like that.

I kiss the stinky, silent squirrel and feel my eyes start to burn. “I hope you really are okay, Barnum.” I set it on top of his box. “I hope I’m going to be okay, too.”

Synopsis

If you lost both your husband and your dog to cancer within weeks of each other, but you were sadder about the dog, would you tell anyone? Maybe your closest friends. Unfortunately, Jane Bailey’s closest friends are on the other side of the country. That’s where Jane plans to go now that she’s free to leave Philadelphia, the too cold, beachless, street taco-deficient city her husband dragged her to six years ago. But with no job prospects in her hometown of San Diego, Jane is roped into helping out temporarily at her uncle’s southwestern small-town B&B. En route to her new role as innkeeper and breakfast chef, she finds a stray at a rest stop. With her heart in pieces from the loss of her dog, she’s determined not to let this mutt worm its way into her affections. She’s also determined to have next-to-no interaction with the B&B’s irritating guests, and the even more annoying handyman who lives next door. Can Jane keep her sanity—and her secret that she’s not really a grieving widow—while trying to achieve her dream of getting back to the place she thinks is home?

I arch one eyebrow. “I’m nineteen. My brother and Madelyn are seventeen.” I glance over to Chase. “So I’m legal, if you’re looking for a date.”

I meant that to sound casual, calm, and unworried. Chase looks away from me. He even blushes. How adorable.

“So did you just bring me down here for some scientific confirmation before you lop my head off?”

Okay, questioning the kelpie would be a good starting point. Hopefully she’d know something. This was legwork, the equivalent of knocking on doors. Except I’m going to be searching the banks for a carnivorous horse…

If I go looking for the kelpie, what kind of precautions should I take? I mean, according to folklore, kelpies drown their victims, then tear them to pieces to eat them. Is that accurate?

When they walked into the restaurant, the techie reached for the AB wash. Before he could squirt it into his hands, the professor began his rant. “Don’t do it. Don’t use their antibacterials. They’re all broad spectrum.”

“Yeah,” the young technician said, “that’s good, right? They’ll kill everything.”

“That’s bad – they kill everything. There are many good bacteria.”

“I don’t have any friends among em.”

“Oh, but you do,” the professor said.

IMAGINE: You can’t touch your face. You can’t leave your home. You don’t dare get sick, that would lead to removal and -likely-death.

Isolation” depicts a bleak but recognizable future in which the fear of contagion reaches a fever pitch as a bacterial epidemic catapults the US into an apocalyptic crisis. Touch is outlawed. Mothers like Maggie bind their infants’ hands, terrified they might slip fingers into mouths.

Gary, a Sterilizer, uses robots to scour the infected, avoiding all contact with human flesh. Trevor, the Chief Enforcer, watches, eager to report any and all infractions.

One inadvertent touch will change all of their lives.

“It’s me,” came an achingly familiar voice.

…I shook my head, feeling strangely dizzy. This couldn’t be happening. Not now. Not when I had just made my first step forward with my life. I couldn’t see him now. I wouldn’t.

“Cassie, Please, we need to talk. It’s important.”

The last thing he had said to me was a nonverbal door in my face, and I had every intention of reciprocating. If that’s as much as he cared about me, then that’s as much as I cared about him. Which was not at all…An expanding pressure in my chest tried to disagree, but I held firm.
