Welcome to My Monday Minis where I share short reviews about books I’ve read.
Today I’m sharing the first book in a series that I let sit on my TBR for far too long.

Nearly Departed In Deadwood
Deadwood #1
by Ann Charles
![Nearly Departed in Deadwood (Deadwood Humorous Mystery Book 1) by [Charles, Ann]](https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51UxA9WE3cL._SY346_.jpg)
Genre: Mystery / Paranormal
My Review
I can’t remember which made me grab this book, the catchy title or the awesome cover. Guess it doesn’t matter since I finished the book and had so much fun.
Violet Parker is a single mom with a lot on her plate. She has two young kids to raise, a job with an expiration date if she doesn’t hurry and sell her first house, a nasty coworker bent on getting her fired and a dwindling bank account. She sees a way out of it when she’s offered her first house to sell. Turns out it’s a mess and she has her work cut out for her to get it ready for showing. Along comes a mysterious man who’s looking to buy a house. Something’s not quite right about him but what can you do.
Violet doesn’t plan on inserting herself into the investigation when young girls start disappearing in Deadwood. But, with a young girl of her own, she can’t stay out of it.
I couldn’t help but relate to Violet. I was a single mom and know all about juggling a job and raising a child. You do whatever it takes. She was scatter brained at times. Who wouldn’t be. And no shrinking violet. I loved how she stood up to her nasty coworker. And her signature purple boots. Gotta love those.
There was a bit of a paranormal element to this story that came from a source I wasn’t expecting. And some sexual tension you could cut with a knife.
I had great fun with this one and have already started the next book. I’m excited to see what trouble is stirring next in Deadwood.
4 STARS

Synopsis
Little girls are vanishing from Deadwood, South Dakota. Fearing her daughter might be next, single mom, Violet Parker, is desperate to find the monster behind the abductions. With her savings dwindling and just three weeks left to sell her first house or lose her Realtor job, Violet is ecstatic when a handsome jeweler hires her to sell his century-old, Victorian masterpiece, until she sees the dilapidated dwelling. Now, if she could just convince her only buyer to stop rejecting vintage homes as if they’re haunted. Short on time and long on worry, she refuses to give up her dream of a fresh start in Deadwood. But with a malicious coworker trying to get her fired, a secret admirer sending her creepy messages, and a sexy stranger hiding skeletons in his closet, will Violet end up as one of Deadwood’s dearly departed?

Some chit chat.
This week was a blur. It went by so fast. Had to work right up til Christmas day and I just cooked a small meal and spent time at home with my son.
We finished The Witcher. I’m still not that thrilled with it but will probably continue if the show comes back with more episodes.
I apologize for not visiting your posts like usual. I had so little time and they just piled up in my emails. Things should get back to normal soon and I’ll be back to sharing reviews of some great books I read. Here’s to a fun New Year!
Have a lovely Sunday everyone.

Welcome to The Friday 56 hosted by Freda’s Voice.

This is a really fun meme!
The only rules are to grab a book (any book), turn to page 56 or 56% in your eReader and find a sentence or a few (no spoilers) that grabs you and post it.
Then go over to Freda’s Voice and leave your link so we can visit your 56!
My 56 for this week is from:
Boy In The Box
by Marc E. Fitch
Genre: Horror
From page 56 in the paperback.
But then the figure stepped closer to the lamplight, and suddenly Jonathan could make out its features. The face was a crude mask of wood with poorly carved slits for eyes, mouth and nose and primitive designs of dull color painted on the flat face. Upon its head were the antlers of a tremendous stag, which reached like bony fingers up into the night.
I’m well into this one and it sure has some eerie atmosphere.

Synopsis
“This is what true horror is meant to be, quiet and thoughtful, an eerie sense of something lurking just ahead in your path with no way of escape; BOY IN THE BOX by Marc E. Fitch is the haunting guilt that reminds us mistakes from the past can return at any time, and in the worst of ways.” — Eric J. Guignard, award-winning author and editor, including That Which Grows Wild and A World of Horror Ten years ago a mysterious and tragic hunting accident deep in the Adirondack Mountains left a boy buried in a storied piece of land known as Coombs’ Gulch and four friends with a terrible secret. Now, Jonathan Hollis and brothers Michael and Conner Braddick must return to the place that changed their lives forever in order to keep their secret buried. What they don’t realize is that they are walking into a trap — one set decades earlier by a supernatural being who is not confined by time or place: a demon that demands a sacrifice. Merry Mary
Scottie’s Adventures #1
by Ashley Farley
Genre: Holiday / Adventure
Synopsis
A young woman longing for a child stumbles upon a Christmas miracle.
Investigative journalist Scottie Darden is photographing the homeless for her Lost Souls series when she makes a discovery that could change her life forever. Under a makeshift tent in subzero temperatures in a downtown city park, she finds a woman’s dead body with her infant child. Without her cell phone to call for help, Scottie makes the split-second decision to take the baby home. Her initial instinct is to provide the baby with food and shelter until her family can be located. But as her fondness for the baby grows, she finds herself facing a life on the run or worse—prison time for abduction.
Curl up with Merry Mary this holiday season. A heartwarming story of the powerful connection between a caring soul and an innocent child in need.

I added this book back in October of 2015. I’d hoped to get to this for the holiday but ran out of time. I still plan to read it soon.
