I’ve read all of Edward Lorn’s stories. Full length and short ones. They were horror with a supernatural or paranormal element to them for the most part.

The Larry Laughlin series is horror of a different sort. The deep, dark, twisted, human behavior. The mosters that prowl these pages are human in form only. All else about them is evil with a capital E!

Check out my reviews.

Hope For The Wicked

My Review

The title is perfect for this story. Is there hope for the wicked? Should there be? When you meet Larry and Mo Laughlin, you’ll be asking these questions.

Larry and Mo are a married couple and retired killers. They aren’t nice people. They are bad people. Bad people, that kill worse people. But I kind of liked them. Well, I liked Larry. Mo scared me. Of the two, I’d say she was the happy clam when they came out of retirement.

Their private investigation company isn’t doing that well, so when a job comes along with a two million dollar payday, they jump back into the business one last time. They should have stayed retired.

They head to Mexico to find their client’s daughter and bring her back if possible. Whether she’s alive or dead, their orders are to kill all those responsible.

Larry and Mo should have listened to their inner voices. If the money’s too good to be true, it usually is. And they find out in the most brutal, horrific way.

One thing about Edward Lorn, he isn’t afraid to take you into some of the darkest, most disturbing places. You emerge eventually, dirty, disgusted, and glad it wasn’t you.

I must warn you, this is graphic horror with sexual deviants and a whole bunch of psychopaths bent on getting their pleasure however they can. My stomach almost couldn’t take it in one particular scene.

And this was how the author got me to care about two killers. Sure, they killed people worse than themselves. They did it in cruel ways. And they enjoyed it. But they were still more likable than the other guys.

There are times when I laughed, times when I wanted to stop reading because I couldn’t take it anymore, and times when I cried. That’s some fine writing.

One crazed pimp, a veterinarian turned doc-for-hire, and an enigmatic facility called “The Show” lie in wait for the wayward couple.

Genre: Thriller, Suspense

goodreads-badge-add-plus for awaken

My Review

This is the second story in the series and picks up a short time later.

Larry survived Mexico. He went back to his roots. To all those bad memories of “Family Time’ with his dad. He’s not planning on killing anymore after one last job. The job, kill his father.

His father is going to be released from prison and Larry can’t stand the thought of his father out there somewhere, preying on more innocent kids. He’ll take him out and be done with it.

But life has more for Larry. He’s confronted by some unexpected visitors, his house is blown to bits, and he’s saddled with a teen age girl as his traveling companion. He’ll let her tag along until he can find a safe place for her. Then it’s a race to save his brother, because the killers will use Jaime to hurt Larry. And that’s not going to happen if he can help it.

I sometimes wonder how Larry would have turned out if he hadn’t hooked up with Mo. She is definitely the deadlier of the two. She enjoyed the killing for killings sake and I feel she stuck to only killing bad people so Larry would kill with her. If Larry didn’t kill, would she have married him? I wonder.

Larry has a little bit of humanity left in him. I don’t now how. He’s seen and done so many dark, ugly things. I tore through this story, wondering where he’d go from here. Would he keep killing? Would he take his own life? Would he find some kind of peace within himself?

Definitely not for the squeamish, this is an excellent new chapter in Larry’s life. I urge true dark horror and thriller fans to give it a go.

Author Edward Lorn

Edward Lorn

Edward Lorn is an American horror author presently residing in the southeast United States. He enjoys storytelling, reading, and writing biographies in the third person.

Once upon a time, during a session of show and tell, a seven-year-old Edward Lorn shared with his class that his baby brother had died over the weekend. His classmates, the teacher included, wept while he recanted the painful tragedy of having lost a sibling. Edward went home that day and found an irate mother waiting for him. Edward’s teacher had called to express her condolences. This was unfortunate, as Edward had never had a baby brother.

With advice given to her by a frustrated teacher, Edward’s mother made him start writing all of his lies down. The rest, as they say, is history.

Edward Lorn and his wife are raising two children, along with a handful of outside cats and a beagle named Dot. He remains a liar to this day. The only difference is, now he’s a useful one.

In January of 2012, Edward Lorn self-published his debut novel, Bay’s End. Later that year, he contracted with Red Adept Publishing to bring his sophomore effort, Dastardly Bastard, to the world. For the Halloween season, Edward published a collection of short stories entitled What the Dark Brings. His novella, Hope for the Wicked, was picked up by Red Adept Publishing and is coming soon.

A Short Story by Edward Lorn

My Review

Edward Lorn is a master of the short horror story. This one is no exception.

It’s not fit for man nor beast with a nor’easter raging outside, but Kay has no choice. She left her husband lying in a pool of blood, the frying pan she used to kill him sticking out of his face. Bullying her was one thing, but abusing her son, Tony, a boy with Down Syndrome, was not to be tolerated.

Now, on the road in the middle of the night in a blinding snow storm, Kay must find shelter from the storm when the car breaks down.

Her son had spotted a mailbox a ways back so they find it and follow a narrow path through the trees to a decrepit trailer.

But, before they can get to it, something rises from the snow. Something white, with glowing silver eyes and very sharp teeth and claws. Soon. more rise out of the snow and it’s a race to get to the trailer.

But will the trailer be protection from the screeching beasts outside?

Well, you know I can’t answer that question.

I’ll tell you this though. The beasts are determined to get inside and eat them up and the trailer has been long abandoned and falling apart.

The best thing about Edward’s short stories is his characters. He has this ability to flesh them out quickly. You feel you know them. But don’t get too attached to them. He’s not above knocking them off for a good scene.

Must not forget his creatures. They are all uniquely his own creations and bloody nasty too.

My Review

I’m always looking for the next Edward Lorn story and the minute I heard this was available I hopped over and bought me a copy.

The first thing that happened was I got confused.

The opening was not anything like the book description and I thought I might have got a messed up copy. But then it became clear. I was inside Jimmy’s head as he was playing a make believe game. A fun and interesting beginning and it introduced me to his vivid imagination.

Jimmy and his two best friends are roughing it. They’re going to spend the night in his tree house, no adults allowed. Should be a fun night of loud music, games, and doing what young boys do.

Since losing his mother, Jimmy and his dad have been coping, supporting each other and beginning the healing process.  When his dad tells him they have to come inside if the approaching storm begins to thunder, Jimmy agrees with no argument.

It’s not long after the boys enter the tree house that it begins to rain, So far, no thunder or lightning so they get out the games and crank up the music. As the rain continues, they are drawn to the window by the sound of the neighbor’s cows bellowing in pain. When nothing further occurs, the boys go back to their game.

In the morning, the storm is gone and the dew sparkles, so Jimmy is startled when one of his friends crawls out the window onto a tree branch.

What could make him so desperate? What scared him enough to make him leave? Where did he go? The two remaining boys soon see for themselves and now it’s a race to survive the dew.

After the unique beginning to the story, the author doesn’t take long to build an atmosphere of suspense. You know the storm is coming. You suspect something is coming with it. You encounter that something. Then it’s all fear pumping action to the end.

I wish I had as vivid an imagination as Jimmy did. Then I could have had a mental image of the things that came out of the storm. Perhaps it’s better that I didn’t.

You easily become familiar with the characters, the writing flows smoothly, and the ending isn’t predictable. Plus you get some out of this world creatures. All scary good.

My Review

Katlyn chooses the long road trip to California as an opportune time to tell her mother something important. Trapped in the car with miles to go, she’d have to listen.

Her mother does her best not to. She doesn’t want to hear it and when she’s forced to, her religious intolerance rears its ugly head. Hurtful thing are said.

Both women don’t back down and only a traffic jam stops the bickering.

What comes next is pure Edward Lorn. You may see the ending coming but he takes you on a twisted path to get there.

The mother may be firm in her belief but who is she to judge?

When I finished reading this story, I wore a wry grin, just like Katlyn.

My Review

When Peter first suffered a debilitating stroke that left him trapped in his body, his loving family was very supportive. But as time revealed he would never get better, he wouldn’t ever speak again, they placed him in a rehabilitation center, and their visits dwindled, leaving him to suffer alone as they moved on.

I can only imagine how bitter Peter must have become. Sure, he can’t communicate, but he’s still alive, still able to hear and see. How could his family just abandon him?

Soon, Peter has something else to worry about. He hears the screams, the snarls, the rending of limbs from bones coming from outside his room. He can only imagine what’s out there. He can hear the slaughter coming closer, moving from room to room.  And then the click of claws on linoleum stops outside his door. And the door starts to open.

The author gives you some horrific creatures. They like to play with their food and have a sadistic sense of humor. Which Peter soon discovers.

I wondered how I would feel. Lying there, unable to defend myself, unable to hide, as the beasts came calling. What fate would be the worst?

I have to say thank you to Edward. I rubbed my hands together in fiendish glee as he gave me just the ending I was hoping for.

Synopsis

MY REVIEW

Here’s the low down on Episode Four.

Ollie and Twon are out to get William Longmire.

Trooper Tom Morgan is still alive but in a coma.

Randy finds an unlikely partner in Merlo the cowardly dog.

You get to meet Momma.

You get a reprieve from Cruelty, but Forgiveness is prowling the pages. There are no words I can say to describe Forgiveness except….run, hide.

At first, I was tensed up, waiting for Cruelty to make a horrible entrance. But once Forgiveness entered the picture I forgot about Cruelty. Well, not completely. I knew the author was great at ‘shock and horror.’ But Forgiveness is just so into the out of.

I had a laugh out loud moment when I caught myself humming a little dittie from my childhood, ‘The Worms crawl in, the worms crawl out..’

Mr. Lorn delivers another skin crawling episode. As I prepare for Episode Five, the mid-point in this serial, I can’t help but wonder, what’s he going to pull out of his hat next.

Episode Three

by Edward Lorn

1771e-addtogoodreadsblack

Genre: Horror

MY REVIEW

Since the first two episodes in this serial were not too long, I decided to go back and reread them so I’d be fresh for this third episode.

It’s funny how much more you get each time you reread a story.

I got more chills and thrills and was thus primed for the third episode. So here we go.

Just like the blurb for this book, you jump all over the place, following this motley crew of characters. I think this is the first story I’ve followed where there are so many unlikables. And one 600 lb. lumbering mess of insanity donning a baby doll mask.

This is where the author’s wicked magic shines. He actually makes me care what happens to these scum buckets. Okay, I didn’t care what happened to them, I was just dreading how bad it would be. Don’t ever relax your guard. Edward delivers bloody violence with gleeful abandon.

I’m a huge fan or horror, whether it be wild creatures trying to eat me, serial killers, supernatural, or paranormal. So, since I’ve already read a bunch of this authors stories and the first couple of episodes of Cruelty, I figured I was well armed, prepared for whatever came out of this authors twisted imagination. And…. I was NOT.

So be warned. Cruelty is for the dedicated horror fans. It’s raw, mind-numbing, and written so visually you want to close your eyes. And I can’t wait for more.
