CHAPTER 1

Abbey’s finger hovered over the little blue arrow on her phone—the point of no return. She read the text again.

How are you?!?! Been thinking of you. Then hastily added. Happy Valentine’s Day!! And immediately second-guessed the addition.

She had been plotting this day ever since New Year’s Eve, when Charlie broke up with her via text. So, this “make him want you back” text had to be just right.

Charlie was her last (okay, in truth only) long-term boyfriend. At thirty-three, Abbey was a late bloomer when it came to romance. But it had taken almost a decade for her to get up the courage to download a dating app. She set up her profile and loaded carefully cropped pictures only showing from the waist up. Within seconds, she got a match. He was a fitness model with glistening tanned six-pack abs and owned a business in Nigeria. They communicated back and forth for the better part of two weeks only using text because of the difference in time zones. And then, it all quickly fell apart when her fitness model crush asked her to text a photo of a hundred-dollar gift card with the pin numbers scratched off. Hmm. Really? Nudes she had expected and even planned for with dim lighting and a full-length, flesh-toned Spanx bodysuit. But she drew the line at his request for money.

Her boss, Caroline, explained, “Oh dear, I think you’ve been catfished. It happens to us all.” And Caroline should know. At seventy-ish (she never divulged her age but had mentioned she had thoroughly enjoyed Woodstock “back in the day”), Caroline had no trouble meeting men even if she did have trouble keeping them—not because they sent her breakup texts on New Year’s Eve, but because she liked them older—much older. She tended to date men well into their later years in life. She had buried four husbands and without deterrence was in hot pursuit of number five.

After Caroline’s lesson on catfish red flags, Abbey was more careful with the suitors who seemed too good to be true and limited her search to within a thirty-mile radius from her home near Baltimore. Three months later, she’d swiped right so often she got a callous on her thumb. Her response rate was in the .0001 range. She was ready to cancel her membership and assume she’d be the first Bumble subscriber to not get pollinated when a sandy-haired, pimply-faced computer tech named Charlie swiped right too.

It didn’t matter that they had nothing in common. He boasted he could recite every word of every episode of the original Star Trek—a television show she’d never seen. And he played a lot of video games. Sadly, his skills with the joystick did not translate into the bedroom.

Their romance lasted just a bit longer than her three-month Bumble subscription. His text to her on New Year’s Eve was short and to the point: I want to break up. He was never the best communicator, but there was no way to misinterpret this message. Her venture into the world of dating apps had taught her one thing: Charlie was the only man in a thirty-mile radius of Baltimore who swiped right on her. For that reason, she’d let her plan to make him want her back play out, no matter how humiliating a plan it was.

She reread her text to him and removed one exclamation point. Two gave the appearance that she was shouting. Oh, but one seemed desperate. She changed the exclamation point to a period and hit send. Then she returned her phone to her coat pocket and began walking the few blocks to the bakery.

A few steps later, she retrieved her phone to see if he’d responded. Nope. Not even the three jumping dots indicating he was sending a text. . . .

Accidentally Working Class
Karly Lane
Publication date: July 1st 2022
Genres: Adult, Chick-lit, Women’s Fiction

Socialite Quinn Appleton knows how to live life—at full speed and with no limits. She has the perfect life, an amazing boyfriend, friends by the bucketload and an eye for fashion. Life is good.

The Appletons are a household name, their eponymous biscuit empire having been in the family for over one hundred and fifty years, making them one of the country’s richest families. They are no strangers to controversy either, constantly gracing the covers of gossip magazines, caught in compromising positions at outrageous parties.

But CEO and matriarch Lady Elizabeth Appleton has had enough. Tired of her children and grandchildren not pulling their weight and dragging the once respectable Appleton name through the mud, she decides to cut them all off financially.

With her life in ruins, Quinn is just one Jimmy Choo heel away from living in a cardboard box when Gran gives her an ultimatum: take a job at the company for six months and her trust fund will be reinstated. The catch? She must do it under a false identity and work her way up—no one can know she’s an Appleton.

Surely it can’t be that hard to hold down a lousy job? After all, millions of other people seem to do it. But Quinn is about to learn just how different the world is when you find yourself suddenly working class.

Enjoy this peek inside:

‘The company has always been the heart of this family—for generations. The Appletons were synonymous with the products we made, that’s what made it special—we had wholesome, family values. But now the only way anyone hears anything about the Appletons is in the gossip magazines.’ Gran nodded at ever-faithful Lionel, who stepped forward on cue, turning to gather a stack of magazines from the sideboard to spread out on the table.

Her brother was on some of them; his arm draped across the shoulders of a topless woman on a beach somewhere exotic on one, and standing naked in the doorway of a luxury villa on another, a huge yellow star hiding his groin (which, personally, Quinn thought was probably twice the size of whatever it was supposed to be covering).

On the other covers, Greta was captured at various parties, kissing multiple men and women on different occasions; on another, she was holding up a bottle of Scotch with one hand and flipping the bird to a photographer with the other.

Then there were the ones which featured her. Quinn grimaced slightly at the cover closest to her, having been taken after a heavy night of drinking. Of all the photos Gran could have used. She was sitting in the gutter out the front of a prominent nightclub, her top sliding off one shoulder, her skirt hitched up to an indecent level and her makeup smudged and hideous. It was unfair that even in drunken debauchery, Greta had never been caught on camera looking that horrific. Cow.

Quinn had been featured in way more magazines than that, and had actually looked fricking amazing. Typical that it would be that cover they used to highlight her wayward behaviour.

‘This is what a once respectable family name has become,’ Gran said as her gaze moved around the table.

‘Mother, I hardly—’ her father started before he was cut off by a glacial glare.

‘I blame all of you for raising such delinquent children.’

‘Just pointing out that I have no children,’ Tobias said, with a doleful glance towards his mother, ‘and can honestly say, looking at this, that I’m bitterly disappointed in my siblings and their offspring.’ He shook his head sadly at the offending magazines.

‘Oh, shut up, Tobias,’ Gran snapped, and without even needing to look at Lionel, the man dropped another three magazines on the pile, featuring her uncle in varying displays of undress at some questionable-looking parties.

‘Oh. Yes,’ Tobias murmured with a devilish grin, reaching over to snag the top one. ‘I remember that night.’ The self-satisfied smile vanished from his face when Gran reached over and snatched the magazine from his hands.

‘I will not have this family’s name dragged through any more mud. All of this nonsense stops right now. Until I’m confident that we’ve rebuilt our reputation back up to a standard we can be proud of, none of you will be getting a single cent out of this company.’

‘Mother, I think you’re blowing this all out of proportion,’ her father tried once more, but bit back a frustrated sigh when she waved off his protest.

‘You’ll be noticing several changes that will start immediately,’ she continued, just as a rumble sounded outside.

‘What on earth is that?’ Quinn’s mother asked, frowning, or what would be frowning if her recently administered Botox had allowed her forehead to crease.

Tobias dropped his linen serviette onto the table as he rose from his seat and went to the window, curiosity getting too much for him. ‘Mother, you wouldn’t,’ Tobias gasped, turning a disbelieving stare on Gran.

‘Yes, son. I would and I have.’

Deb hadn’t flown in over 20 years. In 1989, at the age of 22, Deb was enrolled at Griffiss Airforce Base to become a commercial pilot. Somewhere between dating her yuppie fiancé and planning their wedding in Chicago, Deb developed claustrophobia, a fear of enclosed spaces. I blame the yuppie. Deb couldn’t get on a plane for love that day, but she could do it twenty years later for money. Money was worth dying for.

I moaned rolling off the bed. I could hear the shower running and figured Deb needed me to get her a bottle of shampoo out of her overnight bag. I walked into the open bathroom. Why doesn’t Deb shut the door, I wondered. “Deb, you need something?” I asked, leaning against the granite counter.
“Oh, Becky, there you are! Yes! I need help.” I blinked, confused. “Okay, like you need some shampoo or something?”
“No, Becky, I need you to come here.” I blinked again. “Like to the shower?”
Deb was submerged in water as it cascaded down her tan body behind a white shower curtain. Her silhouette perfectly outlined. I checked the rings to see if maybe the shower curtain was coming loose and that’s the help she needed.
“Yes, come here, but don’t look at me, I’m naked.” I shook my head, completely bewildered. “Okay…I’m here, right outside the shower now,” I said skittishly.
Deb placed a tan leg on the ledge of the tub. A stiletto was strapped to her foot. “Do you need me to take off your shoe, Deb?” I inched a little closer to the stiletto. “Did you forget you were wearing them?” I asked.
“Oh God no. I never shower in hotels without wearing my shoes, you can catch athlete’s foot!”
“Why didn’t you just borrow my flip-flops?” I asked, astonished, extending a finger at her stiletto. “Because I don’t do flip-flops. Becky, listen, I need you to hold out your arm.” I took a step back, staring at her soaking wet stiletto. “For what?”
“I can’t shave my legs on one foot in these heels, I’ll fall over and break my neck! Please just stick out your arm so I can grab onto it. I’ll be super-fast.” I didn’t respond, staying perfectly still. Maybe if I don’t move, she will forget I’m here, I thought. “Becky! Please! I’m going to injure myself if you don’t help me. It will only take a minute I promise!” Reluctantly, I slowly placed my arm inside the shower curtain, never taking my eyes off her soaking wet stiletto. “Becky, make sure you don’t look, okay?” I cocked my head. “Remember, I’m naked,” Deb said through the curtain.
“Okay” was my only response. There I was having my arm being used by my older sister as a human guard rail while Deb shaved her legs wearing six-inch designer shoes. Who knew a business trip to Louisiana would require so much diva work.

Single and Looking: Daisy

Secret Lives Of Sisters #1

by Belinda Austin

single new cover

AT FIRST, DAISY IGNORES HER CAT’S DATING ADVICE.

Daisy will turn 40 in eleven months and has never married. Her family figures Daisy is a loser because she is still in college trying to avoid paying off her student loans which have amassed over 22 years of a miseducation. And all Daisy has is a cat to keep her company. To make the crises worse, her cat begins talking to Daisy, when she is sober! The mess of Daisy’s life is even kookier because the cat is cursing and smoking now and drinking more alcoholic beverages. Mm, there must be a connection to all this flowing alcohol, which may explain the bubbly in Daisy’s brain. Her sisters and mother insist on setting Daisy up on six blind dates and all the men are named after liquor.

A heartwarming, LOL book that will make you smile.

Enjoy the peek inside:

Her heart stopped at the sound of claws coming down the hallway.

What is that rolling sound?

There was the sound of heavy breathing at the door followed by, “I brought you a bottle of wine, dearie,” the cat said, cackling like an old witch.

She tiptoed over to the door. “I suppose you have a poisoned apple, too, in that filthy paw of yours.”

“I didn’t bring a wormy apple. Would you like a nice unopened bottle of Pinot Noir instead?”

Daisy twisted a fist in her yellow Adult Cinderella nightgown. Her big toe stuck out of her slippers. She did not drink this early in the day or was even up on a Saturday morning, but her sisters had banged on the bedroom window. Aunt Davina slammed a picture of Jesus against the window and screamed, “Pray to God, Daisy, that The Man watching football from the clouds will toss you a husband as good as my John! Maybe you will catch a Matthew or a Peter!”

“I dated a Peter once and he was really a dick,” Daisy yelled back.

Given the day she was having, a morning drink could hit the I-feel-good-about-myself spot right on.

Daisy should act strong and tell the cat to go catch a mouse.

On the other hand, a stiff drink would calm the lizards jogging around her brain. The mind racing was due to her new mad-as-a-hatter relationship with her cat.

“Uh, a glass of wine would be good,” she squeaked.

My Review

I had such fun with Allie, Bree, and Megan in the first book, Over Easy. It was Allie’s story we got there. Now the gal pals are back and it’s Bree’s turn to find the man of her dreams.

Bree’s plans of a romantic seaside vacation go flying out the window, quite literally, when a tropical storm forces her to change her plans. And this is where she finds herself in a heck of a pickle.

A word or warning here. It’s not just the hangover you have to be worried about after imbibing in too much of the grape.

I swear, I snorted and giggled my way through the first book, and here I am doing it again. These girls may sound desperate for love. Who isn’t when you’re young and single. But they aren’t dumb, just do some dumb things. That’s where I actually laugh out loud.

Fun is to be had as The Continental Breakfast Club strikes again. Expect for things to sideways as these gals get up to their shenanigans once more. A clean, humorous romance. Perfect for a summer read.

Synopsis

Breanna Mitchell is on her way to a relaxing vacation at the ocean. Maybe she’ll even have a beachside fling to help her get over a recent breakup.

But when a tropical storm makes her destination hotel uninhabitable, a chance encounter at continental breakfast delivers a fabulous option—with a catch. She and her friends can stay at a privately-owned, three-story oceanfront home—if she pretends to be the girlfriend of the owner’s heartbreaker grandson, Ethan. Since he won’t even be there, how hard could it be?

Everything is going swimmingly until Bree drinks too much wine and regales the family with romantic tales about her relationship with Ethan. His adorable brother Adam gets suspicious. His marriage-minded grandma gets engagement fever. The beautiful woman next door gets teary-eyed.

And then, Ethan unexpectedly arrives. Suddenly Bree is about to get everything she’s ever wished for—but is it what she really wants?

My Review

Such fun. This was a mad dash from beginning to end.

Allie comes from a family of over achievers. She’s just a lowly dog groomer. Feeling pressured by her family, Allie, along with her two best friends, come up with a plan to meet the man of her dreams. Surely that will impress her family.

They crash the continental breakfast at a fancy hotel and, sure enough, Allie finds a handsome, successful man who shows an interest in her. Sadly, she doesn’t know he’s a jewel thief and has mistaken her for his contact.

Now the sparkly poop is about to hit the fan as the thieves realize they gave the jewels to the wrong person, and they come to collect.

I remember how tight I was with my best friends. How we did some really crazy things to help each other. It’s one laugh after another with these three.

I was hoping that Allie would find herself. Realize she didn’t have anything to prove to her family. And I hoped her family would realize that too. I couldn’t help but think this madcap adventure would do just that. And maybe, just maybe, Allie would find the right guy for the right reasons.

Right from the start, I enjoyed the easy flow of this story. I settled in for the fun and read it straight through, snorting and giggling all the way.

PERFECT STRANGERS - (A Love in the City Short)

Add To Goodreads

Here it is, New Years Eve, and Katrina is still hard at work trying to get her yearend reports done. When her boss comes in to shoo her home, she’s just finished with them. Now for a whole week off!

Finally the doors slide open and I practically jump in. As the cage starts to descend, I do a little happy dance. My vacation has officially begun. Yay, me!

I’m free for a whole seven days and plan on being a lazy sloth. Days filled with wearing yoga pants and watching old Audrey Hepburn movies are awaiting me. Oh, and ice cream. Lots and lots of chocolate ice cream.

Aah, a girl after my own heart.

When Katrina exits the building, she grows concerned. The supposed two inches of snowfall has turned into a winter blizzard and it’s going to be a tense, hazardous drive to meet her parents for dinner. If she’s careful, and takes it slow she should be okay.

Well, as fate, or cupid, would have it, she’s not okay.

Pulling out of the parking garage, I’m hit with a wall of snow. The weatherman said flurries were likely this afternoon, but this is close to being a complete whiteout.

A bus in front of her fishtails and she can’t escape the pileup that ensues. A bump on the head is her only injury.

When a handsome young man taps on her window, she assures him she’s okay and accepts his offer to wait for emergency vehicles in the warmth of his car. It may be a long wait, but things are looking up!

Quote I liked

Yeah, I tend to speak like a crazy person when I’m around a hot guy. I have a chronic condition of hormone-induced Tourette’s.”

I loved the conversation between Katrina and Drew. It’s funny how you find yourself telling things to a complete stranger. Their banter is funny and the sexual attraction is heating up.

I can’t resist a short story. It’s a great way to get a sampling of an author’s writing and after reading Perfect Strangers,  I know I like the way Liv Morris writes.

I was into the story from the opening and rubbed my hands together in glee as I read on. I had an idea of what was ahead, but had a great time getting there.

While I don’t wish to be stuck in the snow, if I were, I’d hope to “bump” into someone like Drew.

Four of Cupid’s Arrows for Perfect Strangers.

While on Amazon, I bought Liv’s other short story, Magic at Macy’s. It’s only 99 cents! and free for Kindle Prime Members. You can get your copy here.

I’m really loving the cover art for Liv’s Love in the City collection.

Yale University freshman Ally Brown is spending her first Thanksgiving away from home. Feeling alone and restless in a deserted dormitory, she sets off on an adventure to tour the amazing holiday window displays along New York City’s Fifth Avenue.

But her plans get sidetracked as she switches from tourist to stalker after spotting her crush, Jack Prescott, who is taking the same train into the city. He’s the handsome Editor in Chief of the Yale Daily News and the man of her dreams—if only she could work up the courage to speak to him.

Certain that it would take a miracle for Jack to notice her, Ally experiences her own “Miracle on 34th Street” when things take a surprisingly romantic turn, thanks to a little Magic at Macy’s.

I’ll be doing my review  for  Magic at Macy’s soon and can’t wait to read her first full length novel, Happy Hour, when it’s released.
