hechicera Arantxa.

Phantom meets Clue:

She’s forced to murder to survive—until it’s her turn to die.

At Wolfsbane Hall, a secretive 1930s San Francisco murder mystery club, actress Celestine Sinclair plays a deadly role: executing victims who can only return to life once their murders are solved. Haunted by guilt yet bound by unwavering loyalty, she obeys the orders of the Specter—the club’s unseen mastermind and source of its magic.

But when his nemesis seizes control and poisons her, the game changes. The only way to survive? Solve the night’s mystery and unmask the Specter—an identity that has remained hidden for centuries. Even worse, the three prime suspects are the men closest to her: her lover, her enemy, and her best friend. One of them has betrayed her, and she has only hours left to uncover the truth.

The clock is ticking, the stakes are fatal, and this time, death will last forever.

Enjoy this peek inside:

Celestine stood in the Red Parlor, waiting for her prey. One minute until he was supposed to arrive, and James Ashbrook was always on time, even as his characters. He believed it was never appropriate to keep someone waiting.

As her character, Celestine raised her lips with feline delight, and she leaned against the side of a lounge like a seductress draped in silk and jewels, waiting for a midnight assignation.

James stormed into the room like a cowboy in a Western film about to rescue his damsel in distress. He walked with purpose, and, without hesitation, he cupped the back of Celestine’s neck and kissed her fiercely.

The kiss was beastly and consumed by unfiltered vigor. Almost as if they didn’t do this every week. But that was the nature of their relationship. They were a wildfire that burned until it would eventually flame out and die.

James was not for keeping.

No rich man was. A lesson she’d learned long ago. Poor girls don’t end up with ‘the man’, even if they desperately wanted to.

Yet James was for fucking and, tonight, killing.

Celestine’s back slammed against the wall as their mouths devoured each other, his hands stroking up her legs and bunching the fabric of her dress up to her core with their movement.

James pulled away, his eyes widening with betrayal. “I’m sorry,” Celestine breathed into his hair as his limbs went limp. “You’re the Specter’s victim tonight.”

Celestine had poisoned her lips with a tranquilizer strong enough to sedate a horse. Only a thin layer of plastic and Specter’s magic kept the lipstick from incapacitating her.

“How are you going to do it?” James croaked as his head lolled to the side.

“Stabbing.”

She caught him as his body slid to the floor.

“Ah…I’ve never been stabbed before.” James smiled, lopsided and bright. A sick part of him enjoyed dying over and over again. He once said it made him feel alive every time he died in Wolfsbane Hall. He enjoyed it so much that he volunteered as a victim, choosing to die every other week.

Although he wanted it and enjoyed it, killing still made Celestine’s stomach churn and her arms quiver.

While he was still conscious, she gripped an ornamental knife from above her head, rolled her hand into the stabbing position, and thrust down.

“Thank you,” he said, blood bubbling from his mouth as he stared gleefully down at his wound. She knew he thanked her for starting while he was still awake to experience it. He wanted to see and feel the knife as it slid in.

Celestine pulled the knife out and slammed it in again and again and again. It was a crime of passion, after all. Her character was overcome by rage and vengeful lust. But all of it made vomit snake up Celestine’s esophagus. She continued her job regardless. Celestine Sinclair was loyal—the perfect employee for her Specter.

Prologue

It is said, “Where evil rages, hope prevails.” This is not about evil for hope shall find a way …

He watched as the dark shadows swirled across the room. A wind, as strong as a summer tornado, spun and yet moved nothing. Dante hid in the shadows and the sound of squalls raged through his ears. He inched his way toward the massive windows and darted behind the heavy drapery. His heart raced and he gasped when shards of light flashed through the room and threatened his reality. When a lightning bolt shattered, he winced and stepped deeper into the folds of the fabric. Standing in the middle of the study, a boy held tightly to a girl in his arms. Dante wanted to help them but how? The evil man’s robe glimmered with each wave of his arm. Dante watched in horror as the man threw the sheets of paper onto the floor. His long, golden fingernails glowed in the dim light. As the pages floated, each piece crawled toward the couple as if alive. Awkward sounds filled Dante’s ears as ghost-like buildings hovered through the air as if they were nothing more than a whisp of smoke. Now, a medieval scene flashed before his eyes, and the curtains vibrated in his hands. A flicker of an olive tree and then a farmhouse and then a vineyard … are those sheep? Dante tried to inch closer but his feet refused to move. He was glued in place behind the drapes. The ghostly objects disappeared into the paper and he trembled in terror. The shadows formed into a miniature print, each arranging itself according to the direction of the evil man. The man was painting a distressing scene through the movements of his symphonic hands. The wizard swiped along the floor and the girl was jerked into the air. She hovered for only a moment before spinning as easily as a spinning wheel. Then as if no friction ever existed, the girl screamed and the wind sucked her into the cloth paper … the girl was gone…

Enjoy this peek inside:

Celestine Sinclair hated being a murderer.

She hated blood dripping through her fingertips and clumping in her hair. She hated watching poison devour a body, and the feeling of her hands stretching around a slender throat.

Everything about murder was ghastly, but if she had to choose, her favorite way to kill was suffocation with a pillow while a person was drugged and unconscious. It was two and a half minutes of hell—hell she deserved for the act—but at least it was quiet and didn’t leave a mess.

Celestine loathed messes.

Unfortunately, the very nature of her profession required much more theatrical deaths. The audience didn’t come to Wolfsbane Hall to watch, as they put it, dull and tedious deaths; no, like vultures, the rich, pompous pricks wanted carnage.

They wanted a show.

So, Celestine Sinclair would give them one. That was her one objective as an actress at the infamous nightclub: show above all else.

Show above one’s own sanity.

“You’re wasting time,” said a voice forged from darkness, twisting from the room’s shadows. It was glazed in honeyed whiskey. Sweet yet potent.

The Specter—the magical and mysterious owner of Wolfsbane Hall, the glittering palace at the edge of San Francisco, filled with as much mystery as magnificence. It was a place patrons became a part of a murder mystery show. Glitter, grandeur, and witchcraft were laced into every inch of the manor, interwoven into a tapestry of entertainment.

“You must prepare for your next murder,” the Specter said as a whisper in her ear, darkness twirling and cloaking her from the patrons meandering into the Grand Ballroom—the club’s showroom.

“I know, Specter,” Celestine breathed.

The Place of Blood – Rinn-Iru

Conall Book I

by David H. Millar

Genre: Historical Fantasy

.

Over four
hundred years before the birth of Christ, the island of Ériu is a patchwork of
feuding kingdoms, vast plains, and frozen bogs. Battle, intrigue, betrayals,
and courage are part of life for the Celts who call Ériu home.

At the same time, from their underground halls, the mysterious demi-goddesses
of the Aes Sídhe seduce brave warriors, turning men into kings
and binding them with fearsome geis.

Conall Mac Gabhann is content with his apprenticeship with the
local blacksmith. Content, that is, until he finds his family slaughtered in
their home. Two men share responsibility for the massacre: a mad Irish king and
a dissolute Roman. Conall will have his vengeance or die in the attempt.

Accompanied by his childhood love—the beautiful but dark-spirited—Mórrígan,
and the veteran warrior Fearghal, Conall’s quest takes him
northward through unfriendly kingdoms to a confrontation beyond the ancient
earthworks of the Black Pig’s Dyke.

Along the way, Conall and Mórrígan will gather an army and come under the
influence of the Aes Sídhe. If Conall desires, an apprentice blacksmith will
become a king. Who knows what Mórrígan will become?

The Conall Series contains scenes of sex and violence and language
appropriate to the period (400 B.C.) it is set in. It is not recommended for
those under 14 without parental consent.

Conall II:
The Raven’s Flight continues to chronicle the story of Conall and Mórrígan and
the epic journey of the warriors from Ériu (Ireland).

Conall and his brooding queen, Mórrígan, lead over two thousand warriors with
their followers across the narrow sea separating Ériu
from Albu (Britain). Their quest: the capture of Cassius Fabius
Scaeva, the dissolute Roman held responsible for the slaughter of their
families.

The Ériu encounter human, natural, and supernatural foes and friends. At the
mercy of the Aes Sídhe, a race of demi-goddesses who demand that he
fulfil his geis, Conall is named the Hand of the Goddess and given

A Brace of Eagles – Snaidhm Iolar

Conall Book IV

.

Butter-gold
and cruelly hooked, the beak ripped a ragged gash across the newborn’s throat.”

Blacksmith’s son, Conall Mac Gabhann’s only desire was to follow in
his father’s footsteps and enjoy a long life with his childhood love, Mórrígan.
The slaughter of their parents dashed those dreams. Fuelled by vengeance, both
embark on the dark path of retribution.

From the ancient forest, two great eagles take wing. With amber-gold
eyes, Fate and the Goddess watch, ready to
guide and meddle in human lives.

Conall, now Clann Ui Flaithimh’s ‘king over kings’, must complete
his geis—at any cost. He takes another stride closer to Rome and a
reckoning with Marcus Fabius Ambustus. Flat-bottomed biremes carry
Conall’s army across the Muir nIocht to crash on the shingle
beaches of Northwestern Gaul.
New enemies and uneasy alliances flourish. Assassins, treason, and betrayal
thrive.

Above all, Conall values loyalty. Thus, treason within the tribe sours his
belly. Mercy will have no part in his response.

The fourth novel in the Conall series, Conall IV: A Brace of Eagles,
is a rousing epic of Celtic heroes and villains, bloody battles, political
intrigue, honour, betrayal, tragedy and forbidden love.

Retribution – Díoltas

Conall Book V

.

Witch!”
Tullus gasped.
“You are not that fortunate, Roman,” came the menacing reply.”

Blood has purchased a fragile peace for Conall and Mórrígan and
the close circle of friends they call family. However, allies and enemies alike
wonder if the king and queen have lost the thirst for vengeance on those who
slaughtered their families. Alarmed, gods, kings, and despots conspire to poke
the slumbering fire.

Brennus of the Senones smarts at his defeat at Conall’s hands and
covets his lands and wealth. Will a bruised ego and hubris overrule the Gaulish
king’s typical pragmatism?

The Gaiscedach want revenge for the defeat and execution of
their queen. In the dead of night, like cockroaches, they scuttle over the
walls of Lugudunon.

Marcus Fabius Ambustus tolerates no challenge to his plan to be the
Dictator of Rome. But has arrogance blinded him to the enemy he has
nurtured?

The gates of Rome and retribution draw closer. But Conall needs his enemies as
much as his friends. Still, who are enemies and who are friends? It is a time
of schisms and rebuilding, of loved ones endangered, and assassins and spies
revealed.

Author Interview:

When did you come up with the idea for Beyond the Light of the Willow Tree?

When I was a little kid, on the playground of my elementary school. It was a general, very high-level idea at that point, and I certainly didn’t understand metaphysics and universal law anywhere near to the depths that I do now (and I’m still growing each moment in my understanding), but I very clearly had the idea to share universal truth through fiction storytelling.

Even back then, I saw in my mind’s eye that I would use loss as the platform to tell my story, and I also knew the finale of the story. I also knew that I wouldn’t actually write it until much later in life—there were many other things I wanted to do and accomplish first, and I knew that I would need a lot of life experience, seeking answers to deep philosophical questions, before I’d be prepared to tell the story as it needed to be told.

What is the significance of the title of your book?

The original title was Fearless. That title had been in my heart long before I started writing. I knew it wasn’t particularly creative, and I was aware that there were some other books with that title, but my primary goal with this story was always to explain to readers why there is nothing in life to fear, so the title resonated.

I had been writing the story for a few years when I started to feel called to title it something else. I had already written willow trees into my story, as I had always intended, and I started to feel called to change the title. I wanted to shine “light” on the truth as a way to show readers there was nothing to fear. Additionally, the vision for my cover always centered on a willow tree, so my mind started to move in that direction.

Willow trees have represented many important spiritual concepts throughout history and across cultures, including resilience and renewal, healing and support through times of grief, inspiration for personal growth, and a connection to the moon and water. They symbolize a connection to earth and the spiritual realms.

My most creative ideas often come to me while in nature. One day, while I was hiking the trails on the mountain through the woods in our backyard, the title came to me: Beyond the Light of the Willow Tree. As soon as I got home I wrote it in my writing notebook, and I loved the way it looked. I tried a number of variations to see if I liked anything better, but that was my clear choice.

There are many books out there about religion, spirituality, and the purpose of life. What makes yours different?

As I was pitching my book to literary agents, I was fortunate enough to have a meeting with a very successful agent at a major agency. One of the things he said to me was, “there’s nothing like this.”

There are a number of things that make my book unique. First, there are many non-fiction books that share universal truth and metaphysical understandings, but there aren’t a lot of fiction novels that do the same. The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield is an example of a similar approach, but there aren’t many others.

Second, my story has two timelines. There are of course other books with multiple timelines, but they’re usually either across a single lifetime or a family saga, or they include time travel. My timelines are accomplished through the Buddhist principle of the wheel of samsara—the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. In other words, reincarnation.

Another thing that is interesting and unique about my book is that there are multiple storylines in the ancient Rome timeline. This makes the adventure even more fun and interesting.

Do you have a favorite book?

My favorite classic is Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. My favorite line from the book is “The knight’s sole responsibility is to succor them as people in need, having eyes only for their sufferings, not for their misdeeds.” In other words, and as I understand the message, let’s not think about why a person needs help, support, and love; let’s just help, support, and love them.

Just yesterday I received my quarterly alumni magazine from my alma mater. I never read  them, but as I was I flipping through it as I walked from my mailbox to the recycle barrel, something caught my eye. In big type was a quote that said “Just help people. Just help people that say they need help.” It made me think of Don Quixote. It seems like it should be that simple—imagine the results if we all followed that advice.

What do you hope readers will remember most about your book?

I hope readers will remember that they are eternal and infinite, that there is deep and great purpose to life, and that there’s more going on around us than we can discern with our physical senses. Ultimately though, what I hope readers will remember most is not only that there is nothing to fear, but why there is nothing to fear—and that is the path to inner peace and a world of equity and oneness.

Meet  Author Daniel E. Chambrello:

At the base of a mountain in Connecticut sits a peach orchard in a quiet neighborhood. Here, hawks soar high as coyotes slink among the trees, leaving trails of wisdom and mystery. In the early hours, the veil between worlds is as thin as the morning mist. This is where Daniel E. Chambrello sits and thinks. As the youngest of five, Daniel is a born observer, preferring solitude as he questions everything from consciousness to Catholic doctrine. While journeying and experiencing love, heartbreak, and so much in between, Daniel’s knowing has expanded, and his questions have grown deeper. When a good friend handed him a book by a spiritual teacher, it was a life-defining moment, confirming all Daniel had known as truth and further kindling a story that he’d felt called to write since childhood. In this ethos, Daniel’s first novel sprung forth—a spiritual guidebook weaving together love, adventure, and truths that are best felt rather than described.

Enjoy this peek inside:

“You can, of course, decline,” Garrick said when she just stared at him, the silence stretching a moment too long. He smiled—almost kindly. “If you do, there will be no consequences. No one will punish you. I’ll simply tell Jaxon it was my decision.”

His fingers drummed idly on the stack of papers. “The Magisters are very aware of how some of our mages abuse their power, pressuring our fae wards into… arrangements. This is your choice—we would never condone coercion.”

Araya swallowed hard, her pulse thundering in her ears. It was a trap—laid with silk instead of steel, but a trap all the same. This was the price of escaping the fate that other females suffered.

“No,” she said. “I—I’m accepting. I was just… surprised. Jaxon and I haven’t spoken since he left for Elvanfal.”

“I’m afraid that may have been my fault,” Garrick’s expression softened, and for a heartbeat Araya saw a flash of Jaxon in him.

“I’ll admit, I was less than thrilled by his interest in you during his apprenticeship.” Garrick’s lips twitched, leaving no doubt in Araya’s mind that he knew exactly what that interest had entailed. “I had him assigned to Elvanfal to give you the chance to make your own decision. It was the fairest thing to do, given the circumstances.”

Araya stared at him, words failing her. He said it like breaking her heart had been some sort of calculated kindness. Did he know how lost she had been? How hurt? She didn’t doubt it—after all, he knew everything else about her.

“But he was determined, so I followed your career—You’ve truly proven yourself these past years, Araya.” Garrick smiled, ignoring her turmoil. “It’s an excellent match for you. Jaxon is a highly regarded Commander, on track to become a Magister himself. His children will have position—power. Names that open doors you’ve never even seen.”

Araya nodded numbly, biting the inside of her cheek until she tasted blood.

“You will, of course, cease visiting the fae slums,” Garrick continued, picking his papers back up and shuffling through them. “Your duties to Jaxon come first. Your place is by his side. In his bed. Not tending to the less fortunate.”

“Of course, sir,” she said, her voice wooden as the words settled over her like chains. “I understand.”

Content RatingG + M: While this is fully G, it does touch on matters including physical abuse and trauma. This is done in a very gentle way, but perhaps worth noting.

Book Description:

Far beneath the ground, a web quietly spins. The threads are keeping time, marking history. What’s done is done. Until now.

Protected by the gods and powering the three Great Portals of Art, Language, and Kindness, The Web of Time rearranges itself as humans change their minds, fall in love, or cause empires to rise and fall. When the Great Portals close from the world, time begins erasing itself, histories start to disappear, Earth falls into chaos, and the gods don’t know how to stop it—until Jack meets Anna.

Anna is a passionate and solitary writer who is protected by her companion, Nafusa of Libya, the cat god. When Jack, a young painter harboring a traumatic past, falls through the Great Portal of Art in Tunis, he stumbles into Anna, and his fate.

Helped and hindered by a rotating cast of deities, the two embark on a journey that connects three ancient cities in different times: Rome, Tunis, and Tripoli. They realize that it is Anna’s gift for healing words and Jack’s natural talent for drawing places as they were that can reinstate the Great Portals and restore the world’s balance, but some of the darker gods who thrive on chaos will stop at nothing to derail their quest. As time tears faster than they can heal it, Anna and Jack must come together in time to save history, and the possibility of a future.

  1. Do you have another profession besides writing?

I do. I’m also a humanitarian aid worker. Part of why I’ve traveled and lived in different countries over the years is because of that job, and those experiences are absorbed into my writing, sometimes not on purpose!

  1. How do you balance your time as an author with your other work?

Balance is something that I often struggle with, not only dividing my time as an author and with a job, but also ensuring I make time to do other things that nourish me, like reading, or spending time with my friends, or taking a long walk along the Aurelian Walls here in Rome.

What works for me is making lists, because that helps me to get everything out of my head and onto a piece of paper, so I don’t feel I have to keep everything at the forefront of my mind. That list also includes things like, take a break, watch a show, finish reading that chapter, have a lovely dinner. And then I have a new rule about not giving myself a hard time when I can’t get through everything! If there are things I have to get through but that I’ll tend to drag my feet about, like editing, I use the advice I got from a friend some time ago: I just start, promising myself that I’ll do it for ten minutes to start with and that’ll be a win. Most of the time, getting started really is the hardest part, as trite as that sounds, and much more often than not once I’m in the swing of things I’ll keep working through it.

  1. Writers often use a computer or laptop. Have you ever written parts of your book on paper?

I always have a notebook with me and I grew up scribbling, but these days, if I’m honest, I’ll often jot things down in my notes app on my phone because it’s so much faster. Then, I’ll move it to my laptop to expand on the idea. I’ll always read my last version out loud to myself because I think hearing things helps process differently. In all of this, I miss the paper element, and I think paper itself is the most powerful thing, but I have to admit I often fall into the “it’s so much faster to type” category. I do always keep a notebook still with me and my agenda is a physical one I write in, but I’ve even noticed recently my writing hand gets tired much faster these days because I’m less used to physical writing. So I have a commitment to change this back to writing, at least shorter pieces, more on paper!

  1. What is your next project?

When WOT is out, you’ll find me hard at work on the sequel. The book can stand alone, because as a reader, I tend to love series that intertwine but also wrap up their individual storylines, but the world we’re meeting in this first book isn’t done with me yet, and I hope the readers will feel the same!

I’ll be sharing as I start to work on research for the second book (which, right now, is set to take place in Egypt, in a place we already see in this first book, but that’s all I can say!) You can find me on Substack and Instagram to talk WOT, places and how we define ourselves by them, cultural cross-pollination, and the occasional is-curly-hair-better-than-straight-hair convo.

  1. Do you snack while writing? Favorite snack?

I snack all the time! I’m a big proponent of “a little treat”. I love sweets but have some blood sugar issues so I try to always pair protein with it, so my go-to snack is often a piece of parmigiano and some cookies to much on.

Meet Author Flavia Brunetti:

Born just outside of Rome, Flavia grew up bouncing back and forth between Italy and California and has lived between a myriad other countries, so her writing often revolves around place and identity and is usually written on a plane where she inevitably apologizes to the person sitting next to her for bumping their elbow. She is the author of the novel All the Way to Italy. Her second novel, The Web of Time, a YA grounded fantasy adventure set in Rome, Tunis, and Tripoli, will be published by Blue House Literary in May 2025.

Today, Flavia continues learning about the world while working for a humanitarian organization and getting lost in her Eternal City, writing flash fiction and non-fiction stories, and connecting with other readers, writers, and adventurers (also the armchair travel variety).

The Boy Upon Death: Reaper’s Last Call

by J. Robert Adams

Publication date: April 5th 2025
Genres: Dark Fantasy, Fantasy, Supernatural, Young Adult

My existence was as cold as my birth. I was born with both knowledge and will—an inevitability for my kind. Drawn to the final moments of mortal life, we came into being. Some of us became Reapers, tasked solely with ferrying souls to their afterlife. Others craved the power of souls, calling themselves gods of Death—Shinigami. They believed that devouring or absorbing souls granted them greater might, but found that power only deepened their coldness and emptiness. Those gods of Death became husks, bored of their own immortality yet too frightened to end themselves. But being a Reaper can yield the same chill. Though I know the souls would be lost without our guidance, my own existence seems bound to a perpetual winter, drawn to the final beat of each mortal life.

Prologue: The Cold Existence

My existence is as cold as my birth. I was born with both knowledge and will—an inevitability for my kind. Drawn to the final moments of mortal life, we come into being. Some of us become Reapers, tasked solely with ferrying souls to their afterlife. Others crave the power of souls, calling themselves Gods of Death. They believe that devouring or absorbing souls grants them greater might, but such power only deepens their coldness and emptiness. The Veil—the great boundary between life and the afterlife—exists as the ultimate destination for souls. It does not judge or choose; it simply awaits those ready to cross. Souls unwilling to pass linger in the mortal world, their tether to the Veil slowly degrading. Once that connection is broken, they descend into madness, becoming fragmented and unstable, unable to find peace. For Reapers, our role is clear: guide the souls before they are lost. Yet even for us, there are choices. We are born as extensions of the Veil, tethered to it as both our origin and our end. At any time, a Reaper may choose to return to the Veil, to be reabsorbed into its vastness and find peace. But there is a second path—one far more dangerous and final. A Reaper may sever their tether to the Veil, abandoning their purpose and embracing free will. These fallen ones become what we call Gods of Death. Free from the Veil’s guidance, they face a choice: help lost souls or exploit them for power. Many succumb to the hunger, consuming souls to strengthen themselves. These beings often destroy themselves, transforming into husks—twisted, empty shells driven mad by their own excesses. I have not chosen to rejoin the Veil, though the option tempts me in moments of despair. And I have not severed my tether, though I sometimes wonder what lies beyond that severance. Instead, I remain a Reaper. But the cold emptiness of my existence grows heavier with each passing year. I guide souls to the Veil, knowing that my own tether will never allow me rest. The souls need us, but who guides the Reapers? Who saves us from the weight of eternity? Perhaps the answer lies in the unknown. In the countless eons of existence, I have never questioned my role—until now. The faint stirrings of doubt creep into my thoughts, like cracks forming in the ice. The time will come when I must choose: to remain a servant of the Veil, to seek peace within it, or to become something greater—or perhaps something worse. This is the story of how I began to question eternity. Of how I—a guide to the lost—found myself on a path to becoming something entirely new.

About Author J. Robert Adams:

J. Robert Adams has been building worlds in his imagination for as long as he can remember. What began as a childhood escape quickly grew into a lifelong passion for storytelling. By middle school, he was already scribbling down tales of heroes, haunted places, and fantastical realms—stories that refused to stay quiet.

Today, Adams continues that journey with The Boy Upon Death, a dark fantasy exploring the tension between duty and identity, power and purpose. His work blends introspective character arcs with immersive worldbuilding, often walking the line between light and shadow.

He writes not only to entertain, but to ask the quiet questions—about who we are, what we fear, and what we choose to fight for. Whether you’re here for the eerie mystery or the emotional depth, his stories aim to stay with you long after the final page.
