What I Love Most In A Cowboy Romance by Karen Baney

Horses. Horse scenes. I mean, what is the cowboy without his horse?

In each of the books in the Vargas Ranch Series, I’ve included a horse-riding scene. Sometimes it is a central or pivotal part of the plot. Other times it’s a chance to draw the two main characters together.

In Book 1, Falling for a Real Cowboy, the horse-riding scene spans several chapters, starting with grooming the horses. Even though River knew how to ride horses, she had never groomed one, which provided a perfect opportunity for some zinging (clean) attraction between her and Dalton Vargas. Then the horse-ride and picnic added critical drama to the romantic arc of the book.

In Book 2, Falling for a Shy Cowboy, Dylan Vargas manages the stables, so there are many horse related scenes. While he asked Brisa on a horse ride, circumstances delay it. The first time we see her on a horse is when she searches for him after he’s been missing for hours, heightening the tension in the story. When they finally experience their peaceful horse ride together, it’s part of their happily ever after.

In Book 3, Falling for a Bossy Cowboy, Derin Vargas shows up at Madison’s casita with a saddled horse for the horse ride he never told her about. The scene provided a great opportunity to emphasize the boss and sass dynamic between them, settling into a pleasant get-to-know-you conversation.

Well, of course when it comes to Book 4, I needed a horse-riding scene. In Falling for a Smart Cowboy, Devon Vargas runs the children’s center at the resort part of the ranch. Growing up on the ranch, he enjoyed gathering his thoughts as he rode his horse. But how could I create the perfect moment for him and Raina? Easy. She asked him to teach her how to ride horses. A little (clean) zinging attraction from the close proximity. A few errant thoughts on his part. And viola! A lovely horse scene for the romantic tension in the story.

It’s a lot of fun coming up with different ways to throw my fictional couples together in a horse scene. Wonder what I’ll come up with next?

About Laura Childs

Laura Childs is the New York Times bestselling author of the Tea Shop MysteriesScrapbook Mysteries, and Cackleberry Club Mysteries. In her previous life she was CEO/Creative Director of her own marketing firm and authored several screenplays. She is married to a professor of Chinese art history, loves to travel, rides horses, enjoys fundraising for various non-profits, and has two Chinese Shar-Pei dogs.

Laura specializes in cozy mysteries that have the pace of a thriller (a thrillzy!) Her three series are:

The Tea Shop Mysteries – set in the historic district of Charleston and featuring Theodosia Browning, owner of the Indigo Tea Shop. Theodosia is a savvy entrepreneur, and pet mom to service dog Earl Grey. She’s also an intelligent, focused amateur sleuth who doesn’t rely on coincidences or inept police work to solve crimes. This charming series is highly atmospheric and rife with the history and mystery that is Charleston.

The Scrapbooking Mysteries – a slightly edgier series that takes place in New Orleans. The main character, Carmela, owns Memory Mine scrapbooking shop in the French Quarter and is forever getting into trouble with her friend, Ava, who owns the Juju Voodoo shop. New Orleans’ spooky above-ground cemeteries, jazz clubs, bayous, and Mardi Gras madness make their presence known here!

The Cackleberry Club Mysteries – set in Kindred, a fictional town in the Midwest. In a rehabbed Spur station, Suzanne, Toni, and Petra, three semi-desperate, forty-plus women have launched the Cackleberry Club. Eggs are the morning specialty here and this cozy cafe even offers a book nook and yarn shop. Business is good but murder could lead to the cafe’s undoing! This series offers recipes, knitting, cake decorating, and a dash of spirituality.

Excerpt from Chapter 2:

The sasquatch kept his promise, and he returned as the sun began to cast tall shadows over the city. “Good evening, ladies. Please call me Renault, I’m the King’s personal attendant.” His bushy eyebrows arched over his amber eyes as he spoke. He was much less menacing without his mysterious air. However, he still stood at least two feet taller than us, his fur a chestnut brown that covered his head and neck dipping below his shirt. “Follow me. The king is eager to meet with you.”

“My business partner, Cassie, is coming along as well. Will that be okay with you and the king?”

He nodded his head and took off down the street. I squared my shoulders and lifted my chin, trying to boost my confidence as it wavered. Cassie slipped her hand into mine and we followed.

I was Kate Halloway, potion master and entrepreneur. I could handle one Sasquatch king. Couldn’t I?

Renault guided us through a magical labyrinth of secret passageways and alleys, turning in impossible ways. The buildings around us shifted into fantastical shapes, as if enchanted by an unseen force. Cassie gasped behind me. It was clear she was equally as shocked, but from the smile on her face, I knew she was enjoying every moment, as was I.

After padding through a narrowing dark tunnel, we emerged into the Arcane Forest illuminated by the moon’s soft glow. It was much later in the woods than it was in Denny Bay. Some sort of shift in time, which didn’t surprise me I’ve read of such differences in the witch handbook outlining the realms.

Cassie’s eyes were wide with excitement. “Wow. This is really something.” She said while taking in our surroundings. Trees as tall as twenty-story buildings were woven with vines, olive-colored moss and limbs which sagged with white flowers that made the tree appear like it was wearing a skirt. The castle itself resembled an old, Victorian-style home we were used to seeing near along the coast. But this one was enormous. Each window was black-rimmed, with light flickering behind the panes. It would be a bit eerie if I stumbled upon this location alone, but instead I found it beautiful.

Our path led us to a set of steep granite stairs. We followed Renault as his boots clapped against the steps. As we approached the entrance, a set of tall, heavy-looking doors swung open on their own, enticing us to enter.

Renault gallantly bowed his head, extending his hand to lead us through the palace’s threshold, with a courteous invitation of, “After you, ladies.”

The grand entrance was furnished with shimmering crystals that refracted the moonlight, casting a rainbow of colors across the smooth surfaces of the room. Renault led us down a hallway to a room where the king sat, his silver crown glistening as he raised a hand in greeting.

Cassie gulped as she took in the room, her eyes landing on the king. “Wow,” she whispered. For the first time since I’d known Cassie, I would say the sight of the king had her momentarily speechless.

Chapter 1

Kate

Adulting… the bane of my existence. I didn’t imagine myself saddled with so much financial responsibility before thirty. I pondered my current situation while seated at the small desk in the back of the Potion Palace, my grandmother’s shop, surrounded by stacks of bills and a calculator perched precariously atop them. This was my least favorite part of running a business—the constant battle of making ends meet and trying to stay afloat. I vowed when I inherited this business, I’d do everything in my power to make it succeed.

I groaned into my lukewarm tea as the bell above the door jangled, making me jump. Looking up from the ledger where I keep all my expenses, I watched Cassie burst into the shop with far too much energy for this early in the morning. Waving my fingers above my cup, I chanted a warming spell to add some oomph to my morning pick-me-up.

Dust swirled in the air behind Cassie’s hurried movements. Her dark hair was pulled back in a hasty ponytail, strands escaping to frame her face. “You didn’t call me on the way into work this morning. What’s wrong?”

I watched in awe as Cassie pinned me with an intense stare, all while pulling the dusting cloth from under the register and wiping down the ancient bottles that lined the shelves. Cobwebs stuck to her cloth, but she kept moving. Cassie was a hurricane, an unstoppable force, especially when she fretted over things, which was often.

“Cassie, what are you doing?” I asked, taking another sip of my morning tea.

“Inventory,” she answered without pausing, her tone clipped. Another bottle, another swipe of the cloth. Her movements were mechanical, almost robotic. “If you’re mad at me, just tell me, Kate.”

I stepped around the corner and placed my hand on her shoulder. “Cassie, I’m not mad at you. I’m also not giving you the silent treatment,” I smirked, trying to hide my grin. “I’m conflicted.”

“Conflicted about what? I know when you are off, and it’s obvious.” Her blue eyes scanned the room like she was looking for a clue.

“Cass,” I finally said, trying to force a smile. “Business has been slow, as you know. The reason I didn’t call this morning is because I was occupied with the bank. I currently owe them two months’ rent.”

Cassie raised an eyebrow as she leaned against the counter, her posture relaxing but her gaze sharp. “It’s the weather. Spring in this area is drab at best. Who would want to shop?” Cassie continued to ramble on. “Summer is our busy season. We should prepare for that.”

I smiled, appreciating Cassie’s interpretation of the situation. But even her attempt at explaining away the lack of business fell flat as she resumed dusting and organizing, moving a jar of eye of newt a fraction to the left.

She wasn’t wrong. This lazy, coastal New England beach town was always busier in the summer and fall. Before long, tourists would come strolling in, talking animatedly about the lighthouse and the delicious lobster rolls they had for lunch. In the meantime, I needed to be patient and find a way to make some money.

THE ROOT OF IT

When Denis and I started our organic market garden farm with our five kiddos in tow, we were excited to grow a bounty of wonderful produce for our local community. Ordering our first seeds had us dreaming about all of the exciting items we would produce. We couldn’t wait to hold the vegetables in our hands, taste the flavours, and share the harvest with our customers to enjoy around their dinner tables. Farm-to-fork deliciousness had begun. Our community was enthusiastic, and our CSA program was a smashing success.

Over the years, as we expanded our program, continued to grow a wide variety of vegetables, and fed hundreds of returning customers, we noticed a few recurring themes. Number one, although our customers loved their fresh produce and were excited by the incredible variety (“it’s like Christmas in a box each week!”), encountering new vegetables was daunting for them. And number two, they wanted guidance from us on how to fully use, store, enjoy, and make the most of their abundance of fresh vegetables.

The most frequent questions we get asked as market garden farmers are:

+ What is this?
+ How do I eat this? (Are all these parts edible?)
+ What sort of things can I make with this?
+ How do you store this to keep it fresh?
+ What can I do with my excess vegetables piling up in my refrigerator?
+ How can I preserve my vegetables to last through the year?

I wrote this book to answer all these questions and be a comprehensive guide for you to fully use and enjoy all your delicious, nutritious veggies.

MY REVIEW

Sometimes, not often, I come across a book that bogs down when going into detail about how something works. Not so with this book. I found it amazing. Never knew how difficult it was to legally farm pot. The author did her research. She shared the ins and outs of the legal hemp and marijuana business. For those who manage to get one of the licenses to grow pot, there are so many hoops to jump through. So much red tape. That’s where the politicians and lawyers play a huge part. They navigate through the confusion, making sure the players are on the up and up.

The illegal pot business is dangerous. So is the legal one. It’s a business that brings in billions. For some, they would do anything to get a piece of that pie. From threats to sabotaging the crops, to arson and even murder.  Killer Weed indeed. It’s a fast paced thriller with some characters that you’ll love and some that you’ll want to…. well, erase from the picture. This is my first dive into the series and now I want more.

Read an excerpt:

Chapter 1
Raiden Prince prowled the field on foot, a solitary figure moving purposefully in the dark through the field of tall green leafy stalks. The summer night wrapped around him like a shroud, making his eyes appear as black as pools of Texas crude oil and concealing his clandestine mission. In the velvet light, only the shape of the vegetation was visible, but the outline of the three-pronged leaves was unmistakable. He threw gasoline from a red gas can onto the field of hemp, backing up as he worked, so as not to soak his jeans or work boots with the flammable liquid. He returned the red can to the bed of his pickup, retrieved another gas can and moved to the opposite side of the field. There, he emptied the flammable liquid onto a greenhouse made of a steel frame and plastic sheeting, filled with high grade medical marijuana plants, some labeled Peanut Butter Breath, and others Blue Dream. The silence of the night was broken only by the rhythmic chirping of dog-day cicadas, and Prince’s off-key rendition of Red Headed Stranger. He did his best Willie Nelson imitation in his practiced backwoods Texas accent. He mimicked the elastic voices, that he’d heard most Texans use, by eliding certain syllables. All the vowels were stretched out in the middle of each word, and the end of them clipped, especially ones ending in ing. The music was just to set the mood for the evening’s tasks. He preferred rap. After he’d soaked the greenhouse, Prince backed toward the two lane county road as he threw the last of the gasoline. He then moved out of the field, onto the caliche roadbed, where he walked back to his old rusty pickup truck and placed the second gas can in the bed beside the first. # Brad and Thad Lane, each on an ATV with custom paint jobs and extra-large wheels, cut across the pasture from their picturesque home on the hill above the expansive farm owned by the Lane family. They often rode late at night when they could sneak out without waking their mother, Gladys. She was a heavy sleeper, as the pure of heart often are, but she was still a protective mother and didn’t like the twins roaming the acreage in the dark. Brad, the larger of the two, now shirtless, and already tan, played defensive end on the local high school football team, the Giddings Buffaloes. Thad, three minutes younger, wearing a white wife-beater undershirt, played tight end and was the more talented of the two. He was often compared to Travis Kelce because he was fast and often carried the ball in for the team’s touchdowns under Friday night lights, a Texas passion. Riding around the family farm was not an issue for the seventeen-year-olds, even at night. They knew every inch of the family property, as they’d been using it as their personal playground since they could walk. They had certain hiding places for their special crops. Not marijuana, there was plenty of that. Their secret was growing small patches of maize or clover near their bird blinds so they could enjoy a good season of dove hunting in the fall. It was called baiting, and was illegal, but this was their land, and they didn’t follow many rules once they entered the gate to the property they called home. The twins cut low into a narrow creek bed caused by hundreds of years of rain runoff, then peaked again at the top of a low mound overlooking the growing fields. From their vantage point atop the rise, Brad spied a solitary figure below, near the county road, his movements casting eerie shadows against the moonlit landscape. Brad’s brow furrowed in confusion as he pointed out the intruder to his brother. “Who is that?” Thad’s eyes narrowed as he squinted into the darkness, his instincts going on high alert. “Don’t think I know him. What the hell is he doing?” They watched the intruder move further onto the country road, then recede, taking a squarish object that appear to be a gas can with him. The man placed the can in the back of a pickup and returned to the edge of the field. He pulled a lighter from his pocket and just as he was about to thumb the heel, the twins came tearing down the rise, bearing down on the intruder on their ATV’s, while shouting obscenities. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” “This is private property, Asshole.” At that moment, Prince thumbed the wheel, sparking the flint, and tossed the flaming Zippo, lighting up the edge of the field. The fire caught and expanded flaring toward the twins. They zigged and zagged, skirting the field and avoiding the flames by driving through a wet creek at the edge of the heat. Marijuana smoke puffed out of the burning field and then the greenhouse, the plants expelling gases that smelled sweet and exotic. Prince moved back toward his pickup, placing his right hand in his pocket and grabbing his keys to expedite his exit. He moved quickly, but the twins were quicker. Thad bounded his ATV up out of the creek bed and headed straight for Prince. Thad knocked Prince down with the front bumper, and Brad came charging up behind Thad. Prince pulled himself up, dropping his truck keys in the onslaught, and picked up a large limb that had fallen from a nearby oak. He swung it over and caught Brad across the chest with the heavy weapon before Brad could come to a complete halt, knocking him from the ATV. The machine continued into the roadbed and across to the neighboring fence, where it was caught by barbed wire and abruptly died. Thad did a wheelie in the road, turned back, stopped his ATV, and jumped off to help his brother. While he was bending over Brad, Prince came up behind him and slammed the same offending tree limb into the back of Thad’s head, knocking him out cold. Prince went down again as his right leg gave way from the injury caused by Brad’s ATV. Prince got up, limped nearer to the twins, and hit them again, although they were both already unconscious. “Stay down.” Prince sat down on a nearby rock outcropping to catch his breath and assess the situation. The fire popped and flared as he watched and listened for fire trucks that might have been dispatched. The two young men had seen his face and his truck. He could not risk their exposing him or his employer to scrutiny. Feeling the urgency to leave the scene of his crime, he made a decision. He limped back over to the bodies and dragged each twin in turn to the edge of the flames, leaving first Brad, and then Thad to be consumed by the fire. Prince then returned to his truck, but when he put his hand in his pocket to fetch his keys, there was nothing there. It was only then that he remembered dropping them when the first boy’s ATV had taken him down. He limped back to the area where he had been hit and searched the leaves, grass, and waning Bluebonnets with the flashlight on his phone. His search was in vain, and when he heard the siren of an approaching fire truck, and the grinding sound of another ATV coming closer from the direction of the farmhouse, he jumped into his truck and jerked the wires from beneath the dashboard. He hot-wired the engine, and it sparked and sputtered to a start. Prince threw gravel on his exit from the roadside and headed down the county road, leaving a trail of white caliche dust to mingle with the smoke from the burning field. *** Excerpt from Killer Weed by Manning Wolfe. Turning thirty can be murder!

.

When a body is discovered next to the Little Dog Diner on her milestone
birthday, Dani Mackenzie finds herself scooping up a scandal instead
of cutting cake.

.

The prime suspect is the new owner of the Blueberry Bay Grapevine, but
the victim’s stepbrother and ex-girlfriend also have means, motive,
and opportunity.

.

With this trio of suspects, it will take a good nose to uncover whodunnit.
At least Dani has her best friend—her Jack Russell, Pip—at her
side to help sniff out the killer! But in the meantime, her kick-off
to her thirties is turning into more of an upside-down cake than a
celebration as she uncovers money, a business scandal, and thwarted
love at the core of this crime.

.

It will take the victim’s black Labrador and finding a winning lottery
ticket to solve this mystery, but Dani never throws in the towel.
Will she and Pip once again use their experience at solving mysteries
to bring justice to Misty Harbor, Maine, or will they be caught in
the crosshairs of the killer?

My day off wasn’t supposed to start with a phone call startling me half to death. But it did.

I fumbled on the nightstand to silence my ringing phone even before my sleep-deprived brain surfaced through the fog.

“Hello?” I mumbled. The time blinked 5:30 on my watch. Really? Who was making calls at that hour? If I’d been fully awake, I would have checked the caller ID. But you know how it is. I reacted before thinking when caught by surprise. Or when aroused from a deep sleep. Oh, well. Too late to hang up and go back to dreamland. Because an unintelligible whisper came through the phone. Creepy.

Awake now and heart pounding from the unknown, I scooched up against the headboard until I was sitting up straight. Was this a crank call before the sun was barely above Maine’s Blueberry Bay? So much for sleeping in on the one day my Little Dog Diner was closed.

Pip, my Jack Russell terrier, looked at me with her head cocked as if asking what was going on? I had no more of a clue than she did.

I heard my name coming through the phone. “Dani? Dani Mackenzie?” The caller seemed confused as if she wasn’t sure she had the right number.

At first, I didn’t recognize the voice.

“Uh-huh?” I said, wishing I’d let it go to voicemail.

With my husband Luke out of town for a few days, I knew this wasn’t his deep, rumbling tone, so I was ready to hang up when I realized he wasn’t calling with some kind of emergency.

But then I heard, “It’s Cam. Camilla Carter?” Finally, a name to go with the mystery caller. “The Blueberry Bay Grapevine? I hope I didn’t wake you,” she said low.

Why the whisper, I wondered. Was she afraid she’d wake the rest of the neighborhood?

Just then, Pip pushed her head under my arm and knocked the phone loose. When I grabbed it, I hit the speaker button, absently scratching under her ear. Of course, Pip leaned in for more love from me, at the same time Cam’s breathing startled me, amplified now and suddenly sounding like a buzzsaw.

“I’m awake,” I said, hearing the annoyance in my voice.

“I’m really sorry, Dani.” Cam paused. “I didn’t know who else to call.”

Fair enough, I thought, but her apology did little to soothe my irritation.

“What’s wrong, Cam?” I asked, hoping it was something simple like she’d locked herself out of her office and hoped I had a spare key. I did unless she’d changed the locks. Cam had just bought the weekly Grapevine newspaper from my grandmother, Rose Mackenzie. She’d moved into an apartment over the paper in a building next door to my diner and hadn’t made many friends yet. So, this early morning phone call made sense.

But when she hadn’t broken the silence on her end of the phone, I sat up a bit straighter, curious. “Cam? Are you okay?”

She whispered, “It looks like someone’s trying to break into your diner.”

That got my attention. “Call the police, Cam. I’m on my way.”
