Book Burgling Blood-Magic
Jas Bond Book 3
by Gretchen S.B.
Genre: Urban Fantasy
The last thing I need, is the book everybody wants…
When a volume eight of Geysers Journals falls into my lap I’m left with a conundrum. Do I hold onto it and try to get the most money out of it I possibly can, shoring up my finances for at least a year? Or do I get rid of it as quickly as possible in an effort to avoid any more attempts on my life? To me, the choice is obvious. But what am I supposed to do when the buyer isn’t who they seem, and I end up getting stiffed? Then I get a frantic call about my dog. Cheat me out of a heck of a lot of money and I’ll angrily grumble but come after Bailey and you and I have a problem.
Some books bring a heck of a lot of trouble. See what’s in store in Book Burgling Blood-Magic.

What inspired you to write this book?

My inspiration for this book is a little funny. I wanted to write a supernatural book about my husband and his job. My husband is a retail manager and our Rottweiler goes with him to work. The stories he comes home and tells me are hilarious and ridiculous and sometimes you think he’s making it up even though I know for a fact he’s not. So I wanted to have a very self-deprecating, version of my husband, a store owner that I could throw into a paranormal world and see what happened. Jas bond definitely moved away from that initial caricature of my husband once I was really writing the first book but my husband was definitely the inspiration for this story. When I read it to him he tells me that the Rottweiler Bailey is a much better representation of our Rottweiler then Jas is of him.

What can we expect from you in the future?

All the things! I’m just kidding, I do an author podcast titled Exceptionally Average Authors Explain it All, with an author friend of mine Stevie Ray Causey. In that podcast we talk about how I jump from project to project really easily and struggle with setting goals and sticking to them. But you’ll definitely see the second season of our podcast, we’re currently at the midseason break. I am also releasing the first four books of the Jas Bond series between now and the end of July. Right now I’m thinking there are eight books in the series total and I’m hoping to have all of those out by the end of the year. I am also hoping to have some other books out this year but I’m not sure what other titles there will be or what genre, it will all depend on what I can fit around Jas Bond’s schedule.

Do you have any “side stories” about the characters?

I do not have any publishable side stories about the characters right now. That could change later, but as of right now I don’t. I do however know things like how Jas started working with Sven, I have that whole scene played out in my head. Or why Jas broke up with his fiancée and the story behind that. But I don’t think any of those side stories will end up getting published, they might be in some small capacity in one of the main series, but as of right now no publishable side stories.

Can you tell us a little bit about the characters in this book?

Sure, there are a cast of characters in the Jas Bond world. There’s Jas who is a magic-less son of a witch who owns a magical antiques store. His mother owned it before him and his grandmother before her and they are both witches so running the store was a lot easier for them than it is him. He has a rambunctious young Rottweiler named Bailey who is very opinionated and what she wants and when she wants it. He has a best friend Blake who is a werewolf, paranormal police detective who Bailey likes more than Jas. There is also Sven who is a dwarf that works at the antique shop he works in the back fixing objects that come into the shop that are broken. Though his name is Sven he is actually Scottish and very old but we don’t know his exact age. There is also Violetta who is Jas’s ex-fiancé. She is a very powerful witch and a very free spirit, she travels a lot she’s very no-nonsense she and Jas are on very good terms and are still friends even though sometimes they bicker a little bit and there’s a little bit of stress between them from time to time.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

I enjoy writing Snark so anytime someone was snarky I enjoyed it. I enjoy writing Sven a lot because he wants no part of what’s happening in about three quarters of the stories and sometimes he just gets dragged in reluctantly and I really love that. I also really love writing Bailey the Rottweiler. I personally love my Rottweiler. She’s fantastic! She’s a great dog. I can’t say enough weirdly adoring things about her. So giving the Rottweiler in the story personality was a big thing for me and anytime Bailey is doing something that displays that personality I’m usually enjoying myself immensely writing that personality into the book.

Tell us about your main characters- what makes them tick?

The main character in this book Jas Bond owns a magical antiques store. There’s all kinds of magical objects in it and it’s the business his mother owned and his grandmother before that. He was basically raised to take over the store. So he is doing what’s basically expected of him even though he himself does not possess any magical abilities like his mother and grandmother do. What makes him tick as he is just trying to live his life as best he can while being supernatural world adjacent. He doesn’t have a lot of ambition to do anything else. He’s good at his job. He has a comfortable life and that is enough for him. He just wants to maintain his current level of lifestyle and what happens over the course of the stories ends up making that increasingly difficult.

How did you come up with the title of your first novel?

The title of my first novel is Lady of the Dead it’s the first book in my Night World Series which are paranormal romances. I came up with the title because I knew I wanted a title that either showed off the main male character or the main female character. Gwen, the female lead in the book her title in the supernatural world is lady of the dead so I just decided to make that the title. Wasn’t a lot of thought behind it I’m not really good at coming up with titles, minus the Jas Bond series titles those have been a lot of fun to create.

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

You know, I don’t think I would. I am really happy with the way the Jas Bond series is going. With some of my older series there are things that I would definitely change but with Jas’ books I have loved them so much I can’t see changing anything about them. That might be different a year or two from now when I go back and look at them but as of right now, I am very happy with them they’re really fun and snarky it’s been a blast to write.

If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?

I would want to spend the day with either Bailey the Rottweiler or Sven the dwarf that fixes things up in the back of the shop. I have my own Rottweiler so spending the day with Bailey probably wouldn’t be that different than my days normally are. But I think Sven is a real character and has a lot of back story and a lot more to him, only some of which I know, and I know for a fact that he would hate spending the day with me. He is very much a loner but just listening to him talk and maybe making food would be all I would want. Nothing extravagant, we wouldn’t be going to a theme park or anything like that but I would definitely want to find the treasure trove of hidden secrets he has in that brain of his.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

I’m pretty 50-50 on this in general. I have books where one or two characters will be based on certain aspects of people’s personalities so that I have something real world rooted in those characters. In my Anthony Holllownton series I give cameos to a lot of the people I know. Cameos that only they or people close to them are going to recognize as their reading it. It’ll be like they have a teaching degree and the character based on them is working at a daycare. The personalities of those cameos are not like the individual people. It’s usually just the features look like the individual character and their something similar about them they’re not straight versions of those people. Jas Bond was originally based on my husband, my husband works in retail and brings our dog with him to the shop. Our dog gets into shenanigans sometimes at work. That was all based on reality but as I was writing Jas as a character he became less and less like my husband over time. I also have books like the Night World Series or Berman’s Wolves where the characters are not based on anyone.

Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?

Yes! I have select characters that will hijack the story if they’re in it. Most of the time I have full control and I’ll get complaints from characters about what’s happening in the story or they’ll pout and the story won’t move forward the way it needs. But I do have a handful of characters, most of them are in my Night World paranormal romance series, that will hijack a story if they don’t like where it’s going and then I feel like I’m just writing an incident report instead of creating a story.

Have you written any other books that are not published?

Dozens, I have many stories on my laptop that are not published. Most of which are nowhere near completion or even halfway done. Before my laptop was stolen in 2013 I had about 30 or 40 on my laptop. I wasn’t able to find most of those stories in my files once I got a new computer. But since then I have created more and they are just sitting in my stories file while the ideas and plots percolate and I work on current projects. Some of them might never see the light of day and others might be published 10 years from now.

I dictate my books. I am a relatively slow typer, so when I type my books I get about 1200 to 1500 words per hour. After 2 ½ years of dictating I was able to get to 3500 words an hour. I’m now slowly heading towards the 4000 words an hour mark which is very exciting. Dictation definitely has a very large learning curve and you have to get into a different mindset to be able to do it. But now that I do I can’t imagine going back to typing the entire book. What’s interesting is that the way I write in the language I use is very different when I’m dictating versus when I’m typing. My typing languages much more flowery and less matter of fact. There’s a lot more fluff in the books when I’m typing versus dictating. What’s fun about this is that when I’m dictating I am flailing my arms all over the place which I’m told looks very comical when my husband walks by. I also can pace back and forth, lay on the floor, or twirl in my chair.

Unbound: A Doyle Witch / Riga Hayworth Paranormal Mystery Crossover (The Witches of Doyle Book 10) by [Kirsten Weiss]

Synopsis

Three Witches and a Metaphysical Detective…

Riga just wants to mentor three young witches and go home. Doyle witch Jayce wouldn’t take help if it landed on her. But when a man is murdered in front of their eyes, these two must learn to work together. Because a dead man is the least of their worries… Jayce Bonheim loves magic and Doyle, California. But she and her small town have been paying a deadly price for the fairy gate she and her sisters can’t close. Now, a society of dark magicians has returned to town, a deadly winged monster has come through the gate, and an old friend has been murdered. And the new mentor who’s supposed to help Jayce and her sisters seems to have an agenda of her own…

It was supposed to be a simple training gig for Riga Hayworth, not a murder investigation. Still reeling from a tragic mistake in her past, she’s determined to stay retired. But the murder and the town’s magic seem tied together. Can Riga resist the lure of an investigation?

A thrilling and funny paranormal mystery, packed with magic, mystery, and murder. Perfect for fans of Mercy Thompson, Supernatural, and Charlaine Harris. Buy Unbound and start reading this page-turning witch mystery.

Enjoy this peek inside:

When the Devil appeared to Riga, she laughed.

Not bravely. Not sardonically. Hysterically.

His skin had a parboiled look. He was naked, and looked like something out of an old horror film, his horns curving backward like a mountain goat’s. She learned later that laughter is a normal reaction to the Devil. But at the time, she just figured things had gone very wrong.

Exactly what had gone wrong… Well, there were several options available.

Three days earlier, she’d received a letter from an elderly magician requesting her appearance in Doyle.

Riga had ignored the letter.

She was no longer a metaphysical detective and couldn’t leave her children, only seventeen months old and already bursting with magic.

The next night, the magician, Mrs. Steinberg, called.

Riga had said no again. Bafflingly, a year ago her familiar had turned into a human. And you don’t leave an ex-gargoyle running amuck in human form without supervision.

Last night, Mrs. Steinberg called again. Riga had again said… no. Thanks. Really. Still retired from detecting. And her husband was having some tricky dealings with the government. She couldn’t possibly leave.

And then the Devil appeared.

Coffee and Crushes at the Cat Café
Furrever Friends Book 1
by Kris Bock
Genre: Sweet Romance

What do you do when you meet the guy of your dreams? Set him up with your sister, of course.

Kari doesn’t have time for love when she’s opening her new cat café. Renovating an old restaurant, hiring employees, fighting with the health inspector – oh, and welcoming 16 shelter cats – keeps her plenty busy. She’s doing this for the cats, the community, and most of all her family. The café will give her sister, Marley, a job worthy of her baking skills.

Then a tattooed military vet wanders in claiming to be a master baker himself. The café doesn’t need another baker, but maybe Marley needs a man. Surely she’ll fall for a guy this sweet, this sexy, this tasty.

Colin has other ideas. It’s Kari who makes him want to pour on the sugar and turn up the heat. But he’s spent the last two years recovering from physical and psychological wounds. Is he really ready for a relationship? He’s not even sure he should commit to Samson, the fluffy marshmallow of a cat who steals his heart.

The Furrever Friends Sweet Romance series features the workers and customers at a small-town cat café, and the adorable cats and kittens looking for their forever homes. Each book is a complete story with a happy ending for one couple (and maybe more than one rescued cat). These sweet romances will leave you with the warm, fuzzy feeling of cuddling a purring cat.

If you enjoy friends to lovers tropes, work romances, military heroes, and strong heroines completely failing at playing the matchmaker, check out Coffee and Crushes at the Cat Café. You’ll also find rescue cats with plenty of personality and their own desire for love.

Why do you write about a cat café?

I’ve noticed lots of sweet, small-town romance series involving dogs, but few with cats. I think it’s because dogs clearly bring people together – think dog parks, walking your dog, obedience training – while cats don’t.

Until you consider cat cafés. These are a relatively recent trend, but you can now find dozens and dozens of cat cafés all around the world. Typically they partner with a shelter, so all the cats you can visit are available for adoption. This gives visitors a chance to spend more quality time with the cats before they choose one. Those of us who can’t keep a cat in the home for whatever reason can at least visit some.

Are the cats important characters?

The Cat Café series features lots of shelter cats who live at the café while waiting for adoption. In each book, one or more find their permanent homes. Merlin appeared in the first book as one of many cats named. He quickly developed a distinct personality and became a reader (and author) favorite.

In Kittens and Kisses at the Cat Café, the lead characters start fostering five struggling kittens. Merlin escapes the main café room where the cats are supposed to be contained and makes his way to the office. He mews at the door until Marley lets him in and then jumps on the desk and into the box of foster kittens. As Marley notes, he volunteers to be a nanny. The kittens see him as their surrogate mama.

He finds his permanent home in book 3, Tea and Temptation at the Cat Café, but he still comes back as a regular visitor.

Do you have cats?

No. I’m writing a series about a cat café. But I don’t have cats. Huh?

I love cats. I have known cats and enjoyed them in small doses. But tragically, I am very allergic to cats, so I cannot let one keep me as a servant. (I’m getting allergy shots, so maybe that will change in the future. All hail our fluffy overlords!) In the meantime, I will write about a cat cafe, which gives me a chance to look at lots of pictures and videos of adorable cats and kittens.

Instead, my husband and I keep ferrets. They are similar to cats in some ways. When they play, they are as rambunctious as kittens. Like adult cats, they sleep most of the time. Princess Pandemonium (Panda) and Teddy Black Bear (Bear Bear) provide us with lots of amusement, snuggles, and cute photos for social media.

What was your journey to publication?

I wrote my first novel, The Well of Sacrifice, shortly after finishing grad school, while I was looking for work as a magazine editor. I loved books such as Julie of the Wolves and Island of the Blue Dolphins growing up and wanted to do a similar young adventure story. The novel is set in Mayan times, inspired by a summer I spent traveling through Mexico and Central America. Astonishingly, I sold the book! This gave me the mistaken impression that having a writing career wasn’t so hard. I have since written many novels that I haven’t sold, but I’ve managed to make a career of writing by focusing on more steady moneymakers such as educational publishing.

Around 2008, I was feeling restless and wanted a change. I had mostly been reading adult romantic suspense novels, so I started writing those under the name Kris Bock. Desert Gold follows the hunt for a long-lost treasure in the New Mexico desert. In Valley of Gems, estranged relatives compete to reach a buried treasure by following a series of complex clues. Whispers in the Dark features archaeology and intrigue among ancient Southwest ruins. In Counterfeits, stolen Rembrandt paintings bring danger to a small New Mexico town.

So I have over 80 published books now, but that includes fiction and nonfiction, for children and adults. The variety keeps me interested!

Where do you live?

I live in a small town in central New Mexico with my husband and our ferrets. I am a full-time writer, and my home office looks out on nature, complete with distracting wildlife such as roadrunners and foxes. I take breaks and use my BFA in photography to show Facebook friends how lovely the Southwest is. The only ways to get around are on foot or by car, but it’s such a small town that I can often walk to friends’ houses and rush-hour is less than five minutes.

What else do you have coming up for readers?

I’m writing a series with my brother, scriptwriter Douglas J Eboch, who wrote the original screenplay for the movie Sweet Home Alabama (yes, the movie starring Reese Witherspoon). Our new young adult comedy series features “Felony Melanie,” Jake, and their friends a decade before the events of the movie. It’s a lot of fun to work with a writing partner, especially one I’ve known my whole life.

Book 1 involved a beauty pageant with a mystery and book 2 had Melanie desperate to participate in the local demolition derby. We are now writing book 3, which involves a high school prank war. Readers called the first two books “Laugh out loud funny,” so I guess the fun we have writing it is coming through.

Find the first two books at Amazon US or other e-book retailers. You can check out the series for free if you sign up for our Rom-Com newsletter and get Felony Melanie Destroys the Moonshiner’s Cabin. These first two chapters from the novel Felony Melanie in Pageant Pandemonium stand alone as a short story. In the future, you’ll get fun content about upcoming Felony Melanie novels and other romantic comedy news and links.

Furrever Friends Book 3

Can two lonely people get a second chance at finding love?

Zach may be a best-selling novelist, but it’s been a long time since he’s felt truly alive. In the last six months, he moved to the country, his wife left him, and he was diagnosed with cancer. Now he lives in a haze of treatments, writer’s block, and simply trying to survive each week. But when a pretty woman comes into his favorite café and throws herself down on a padded bench with a groan of despair, he feels something he thought he’d lost long ago: curiosity.

As a veterinarian, Jenna knows both joy and heartbreak. The former she can share with her clients. The latter she keeps to herself. She learned one lesson from her ex-husband: Men don’t want to deal with your emotions. It’s odd to have a stranger ask about her problems. It’s even more of a shock when he offers to solve one of them by fostering the sick kitten abandoned by its owners.

Zach and Jenna bond over kitten care and build a close friendship. Could they have more? Zach is finally starting to hope for a future, ideally one that includes Jenna, but he can’t move forward until he’s dealt with his past. Meanwhile, Jenna is afraid to risk her heart on someone who might not survive the next few months.

Eat a crumpet. Check. Say “bloody hell” in an English pub. Check. Solve three murders and fall in love? Definitely not on the list. But when England dishes up murder, even an American girl knows it’s time to channel her inner Agatha Christie.

American Eliza Darcy travels to Merry Old England to partake in a Darcy/Bennet family reunion for one reason: to solve the estrangement between her father and uncle. Not long after Eliza’s arrival and exploration of the vast estate of her ancestors, a dead body surfaces. Murder and mayhem replace afternoon teas and flirting with her British heartthrob. Eliza has every intention of keeping her snoot out of official Scotland Yard business, but when clues to the murder begin to merge with her investigation into her family’s rift, her inner wannabe sleuth self-activates.

With the help of her batty great-aunt and the sexy Heath Tilney, Eliza hurries to untangle the web of lies and secrets. As corpses start to pile up faster than the clues, Eliza fears the estate’s family graveyard will swallow another body: hers.

Courtney Kelly has a shop full of delights, a cat named Pixie, a green thumb—and a magical touch when it comes to garden design. But in Carmel-by-the-Sea, things aren’t all sweetness and fairy lights . . .

When Courtney’s friend Wanda gets into a ponytail-pulling wrestling match in public with a nasty local art critic, Courtney stops the fight with the help of a garden hose. But Lana Lamar has a talent for escalating things and creating tension, which she succeeds in doing by threatening a lawsuit, getting into yet another scuffle—in the midst of an elegant fundraiser, no less—and lobbing insults around like pickleballs.

Next thing Courtney knows, Lana is on the floor, stabbed with a decorative letter opener from one of Courtney’s fairy gardens, and Wanda is standing by asking “What have I done?” But the answer may not be as obvious as it seems, since Wanda is prone to sleepwalking and appears to be in a daze. Could she have risen from her nap and committed murder while unconscious? Or is the guilty party someone else Lana’s ticked off, like her long-suffering husband? To find out, Courtney will have to dig up some dirt . . .

So…You Want to Write a Book
by Christian Warren Freed
Genre: Nonfiction, Self-Help
WANT TO WRITE A BOOK BUT DON’T KNOW WHERE TO BEGIN?
The plot—sketchy maybe—is in your head. Now, how do you pull it together into a book?
Christian Freed to the rescue with So . . . You Want to Write a Book, taking you on a helpful and entertaining trip from honing your idea all the way through to making your publishing decisions.
This is not your typical “how-to-write” reference book. Rather, it helps you think through your situations, shares ways to improve your writing, and prepares you for the inevitable author frustrations.
No two ways about it—after writing more than 25 books himself, Freed knows a thing or two. An award-winning, best-selling author of military fantasy fiction, Freed uses humor, real learning curve experiences, and practical wisdom to guide would-be writers via four easy-to-digest units (and yes, the E word is “edit”):
— That Nagging Idea
— Where the Magic Happens
— The Dreaded E Word
— Wrapping It Up in a Neat Little Bow
Though primarily focused on the art of fiction writing, So . . . You Want to Write a Book will also benefit nonfiction writers; either way, it’s a “from-the-head-to-the-page” thing.
So, are you finally ready to write the book that’s in your head? Start by reading this book!
.
.
Christian W. Freed was born in Buffalo, N.Y. more years ago than he would like to remember. After spending more than 20 years in the active duty US Army he has turned his talents to writing. Since retiring, he has gone on to publish 17 military fantasy and science fiction novels, as well as his memoirs from his time in Iraq and Afghanistan. His first published book (Hammers in the Wind) has been the #1 free book on Kindle 4 times and he holds a fancy certificate from the L Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest.
Passionate about history, he combines his knowledge of the past with modern military tactics to create an engaging, quasi-realistic world for the readers. He graduated from Campbell University with a degree in history and is pursuing a Masters of Arts degree in Military History from Norwich University. He currently lives outside of Raleigh, N.C. and devotes his time to writing, his family, and their two Bernese Mountain Dogs. If you drive by you might just find him on the porch with a cigar in one hand and a pen in the other.

What are your top 10 favorite books/authors?

JD Robb, Loreth Ann White, B.J. Daniels. Roxanne St. Claire, Karen Rose, Rick Mofino, Lisa Gardner, Joanne Pence, Terry Odell, and Angie Fox.

How long have you been writing?

Forever.

Do the characters all come to you at the same time or do some of them come to you as you write?

Some come as I write, and some develop and change as I write.

What kind of research do you do before you begin writing a book?

 Depends on the book.

Do you see writing as a career?

Yes

What do you think about the current publishing market?

I think I’ll pass on this one. There have been many changes in publishing over the years. Some good, some not. It would take more than a few sentences to discuss this.

Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?

Yes. Romantic suspense, romance, and mysteries.

Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?

With noise. I usually play music. Not sure why, I just write easier.

Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?

Usually one book at a time.

If you could have been the author of any book ever written, which book would you choose?

Wow! There’s a few. I think I’ll go with One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez.

Pen or typewriter or computer?

 Computer

Tell us about a favorite character from a book.

I enjoy Savannah, the neighbor across the street, and old family friend born in New Orleans. She was close to Perrine. She’s comfortable, a believer in the paranormal and wants to protect Julie Ann. She also makes great creole food.

What made you want to become an author and do you feel it was the right decision?

I’ve been writing my whole life. It’s not really a decision.

A day in the life of the author?

For me, when I was working it was the same as anyone else who had a fulltime job but then you added a couple of hours writing at night before you went to bed.

What makes a good story?

Great, relatable characters with goals and conflict a reader relates to, a compelling plot and great writing.

What are they currently reading?

Quichotte by Salman Rushdie

What is your writing process? For instance do you do an outline first? Do you do the chapters first? What are common traps for aspiring writers?

I’m more of a pantser. I come up with an idea for a plot. I think about it for a while and decide on characters. Then I sketch an outline – one or two lines per scene. Then I do my research and start writing.

What is your writing Kryptonite?

Trying to make my characters do something that goes against their personality. It can stop my writing until I figure it out. Delete and start that section over again.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

Original. I like to write stories I find interesting and hopefully a reader will too.

What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?

Getting into their head and seeing the situation from their point of view, not from my point of view.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

It depends. Covid slowed me down, usually 6-8 months.

Do you believe in writer’s block?

Yes

imperfect character
s, each fighting to find and protect their loved ones
against unthinkable odds.

BOOK ONE: HARD WAY HOME

Two strangers. Almost no chance of survival.
Even less hope.

Coast refineries are decimated by a volatile storm, the attack knocks out the
nation’s entire power supply, instantly throwing America into a deadly
new dark age

For Army veteran Cash Bishop, getting back to
his family before it’s too late becomes a fight to survive in

apocalypse.

Dr. Hannah Carter doesn’t know who’s after her

stranger she meets on her dangerous cross-country trek is the only person she
can trust now to help get her home. And keep her alive.

With chaos escalating and the country

Retired Army Colonel Thomas Sand returns to
the U.S. during its darkest days, only to find the leaders left in
government—puppeted by the deep state elite—want him dead. Between the threat
assessment algorithm he developed before the apocalypse, and the fact that his
wife Becca and stepdaughter Hannah are both brilliant scientists critical to
the new world order, his family isn’t short on enemies. And despite all his
training to the contrary, his only duty now is to them and
their safety. Unbeknownst to him, halfway down the coast, his wife is fighting
to drag her fevered and battered body home with no means of communication, and
only the help of a nameless stranger…

Meanwhile, Dr. Hannah Carter, still traveling
with the Army veteran who saved her life, discovers she may be the linchpin to
destroying the dangerous shadow government that now controls what remains of
the fast-crumbling U.S. But to do so, she must leave behind everyone she cares
about and face off against the hidden puppet master pulling the strings from
his bunker. Unbeknownst to her, Cash Bishop, her fearless companion turned
ruthless protector, has followed her into the lion’s den, no
violence spared. His only light in their new broken world of neverending
darkness, finding Hannah is a given. As is taking down the corrupt powers that
destroyed his country once and for all…

Chapter 4: Good
Riddance

All total, Thomas spent
fifteen minutes in the house after shooting Gavin once center mass, then again
in the head. He quickly ransacked the man’s clothing and desk, taking the
wallet and a key ring that had fobs for both vehicles. From there, he sprinted to
the master bedroom, removing Agnetha’s diamonds from the corpse and dumping the
rest of her jewelry box into a pillow case before heading to the oversized
utility closet at the back of the garage where Gavin kept his golf clubs and,
more importantly, most of his hunting equipment.

Entering the garage, he hit
the remote start for the Land Rover. Nothing happened. He hit it again, then a
few more times trying different combinations of pressing the button. Next he
tried the Z4. With the only sound in the garage that of Thomas swearing, he
stalked over to the Land Rover, threw the driver side door open and tried
starting the vehicle in the more conventional manner.

He lost ten seconds to
pounding out his fury against the steering wheel then popped the hood, got out
and lifted it the rest of the way open. He stared, mind numb at the jumble of
slashed wires and hoses, the inner protective covering of the Land Rover’s
engine missing. Spotting a note taped to the inside of the hood, he pulled it
off and read, his flesh heating in rage.

Whoever you are, you weren’t
meant to survive.

Your Host, Gavin DeBerg

Even though he knew he would
find the same cruel sarcasm beneath the hood of the Z4, Thomas had to check.
Each step, each wasted second pounded in his chest, but he opened the driver
side door, popped the hood and surveyed the carnage.

Yep, DeBerg really was a
cold-hearted bastard. If the world wasn’t ending around him, Thomas would have
returned to the basement and unloaded the Maxim’s remaining twenty-seven bullets
into the corpse’s groin and face.

Hell, he’d grab an extra
magazine and turn the body into Swiss cheese.

But the world was ending, so
he kept a tight grip on his focus and turned to the utility closet. He twisted
the doorknob, found it locked. He tried both keys on the ring he had taken from
Gavin’s desk drawer. When that failed, he lifted his leg, took a quarter second
to brace then kicked as hard as he could, his anger doubling the force of the
blow he landed.

Hollow and made out of
plywood, the door peeled away from its frame to expose two backpacks and a
Browning bolt-action rifle in camo finish kitted out with a custom stock and a
Leupold VX-6 rifle scope with a 6:1 zoom ratio.

He tested the weight of the
two packs then opened the heavier one, finding two extra magazines and several
boxes of ammunition, as well as all the other contents he would expect Gavin to
carry on a hunting trip or in a bug out bag.

Conscious that someone could
show up and challenge him at any second, Thomas stood with everything but his
gaze immobilized as he tried to figure out how to get the extra gear back to
the Caddy. Then he remembered the separate garage, the one with the au pair
suite above it.

He hadn’t asked Gavin about
the girl, hadn’t even thought that she could be alive and walk in on him.

Get your head out of your ass, soldier!

With a curt nod acknowledging
his own stupidity, he headed to the breezeway that joined the main house to the
small wing. A glance in the garage revealed no third car, but there was a
riding lawn mower. A jog up the stairs offered a self-contained suite filled
with furniture, but an empty refrigerator and cupboards. He ran back down, hit
the garage door opener then returned to the main garage, grabbed the two packs
and the rifle and dragged them to the lawn mower.

Spotting a fifteen-gallon gas caddy, he almost pissed himself with joy.

With the mower’s key in the
cup holder, he spent his last two-point-five minutes in Gavin’s house getting
everything strapped onto the machine using the garden hose he found hanging in
a coil on the garage wall. He took the same route from house to woods, barely
slowing once he was past the tree line to retrieve his pack.

He stopped when he got close
to the trail, turned the mower off and made a scouting trip to check the area
around the Caddy. When he was satisfied no one was watching, he brought the
mower up alongside the Cadillac, started the old beast and popped the trunk. He
put the fuel container in first. He had already tested the seal on the nozzle
and fill hole in the garage, but he tested them again then grabbed the lighter
of the two packs from the storage closet.

He figured the bag was meant
for Agnetha to carry and dumped the contents in the trunk for a quick survey.
The neutral line of his mouth turned to a frown as a couple dozen diapers fell
out. Then he laughed, thinking about the NASA astronaut who had worn adult
diapers for a marathon cross country drive with the intent to slay a sexual
rival. If they had been adult sized, he might have entertained the idea because
every stop he made on the trip home would heighten his exposure. Still, the
diapers might come in handy if he injured himself. And the baby formula and jar
food was worth keeping as long as he could.

Looking at the contents,
Thomas could understand the thought process that had spurred Agnetha’s revolt.
She had put on her most alluring dress and favorite jewels before poisoning
herself. The woman had preferred to die looking like a million bucks instead of
living with makeup running down her face and dirt under her nails, with no au
pair to hand Gisa off to. Thomas could count on one hand how many times he’d
seen the woman hold her daughter over that four-day weekend.

Leaving the contents of the
bag scattered, he tossed in the garden hose then slammed the lid. The heavier
pack he placed on the passenger floorboard of the front seat, taking a few
seconds to dig inside and remove the shortwave radio. He placed the radio in
the center of the seat then climbed behind the wheel and carefully drove
backwards for a quarter mile until he was off the bike trail.

The best route to his home in
Evansville, Indiana, was also the most direct. He passed unmolested through
Manassas then headed southwest to Interstate 81. He followed it south to the
I-64 exchange then headed west into the George Washington and Jefferson
National Forest.

Surrounded by the quiet
beauty of the woods and hills, he could almost relax. Between the full tank he
had started with and the gas caddy, he figured he would make it at least as far
as Huntington, West Virginia. Before that, he would keep an eye out for both
the conventional and unconventional opportunities to get more gas. He had cash
to pay, and some of the commercial operations would have tanks of fuel with
generators running. Timber companies and farms would have hand pumps if they
didn’t have generators, and he would pass plenty of both getting to Evansville.

The farmers would be
reluctant to give him any gas because it was specially dyed to mark it for
agricultural use only. They would tell him to wait, tell him that the pumps in
town would be working within a few hours, either because the power would be
back on or the generators would be up and working. They would be wrong, but
Thomas would do nothing to warn them. Instead, he would pull out a piece of
Agnetha’s gold jewelry from his pocket.

Greed would spark in the
farmer’s gaze and the gas would flow into the Caddy’s tank. For a day or two,
the farmer would shake his head in memory, maybe chuckle to his wife about the
foolish traveler who had traded a thousand dollars worth of gold or a
three-strand diamond bracelet for less than a hundred in gas.

Then reality would set in and the farmer and his wife would weep.
