by Mariah Ankenman

(Jackson Family Distillery, #4)
Publication date: May 8th 2025
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Catching a woman breaking into his car was not the way Ace Jackson wanted to start his day. Finding out she’s the new hire at his family’s distillery is even worse. Sure, she said she mistook his car for her’s, but there’s something about Millie he doesn’t trust. Too bad all his siblings vetoed his vote. What’s the point of being the oldest if you don’t get to be in charge?

Millie Danes told the grumpy Adonis she wasn’t breaking into his car, but did he believe her? No! The guy has a stick up his butt bigger than the pine trees gracing the Rocky Mountains. Unfortunately, he’s her new boss or she’d try and see if she could melt that icy exterior. But she has more on the line than a job, she needs funds to start her dream. Her very own aerial studio.

When a theft is discovered at work, Ace enlists Millie’s help as a spy in exchange for the money to build her dream. Their tentative truce becomes complicated when desires fan the flames of temptation. In the battle of love, who will fall first?

“Millie!”

Her shouted name came from beyond the swinging door. Irritation rose, winning the war over guilt as she quickened her pace. “Ugh, coming!”

She pushed through the door into the back, muttering to herself. “Get your boxers out of a bunch you grumpy asshole. It was five damn seconds.”

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” Ace demanded the second the door stopped swinging.

“Well, I was working, until you pulled me back here to yell at me like an angry schoolmarm.”

Confusion drew his brow down. “What the…never mind. How is pulling some dangerous stunt and almost breaking your fool neck working? Last time I checked this was a bar, not some ridiculous stunt show.”

That was it. She knew the guy was her boss, but he was being a giant dick. No one talked to her that way.

“First of all, I wasn’t about to break anything. Before you rushed in and grabbed me—”

“Saved you.”

She arched one eyebrow in disbelief. “Is that what you thought you were doing? Saving the helpless damsel in distress? I got news for you buddy. I have been bottle-walking for years. I know how to fall from the bottles safely. Provided some jackass doesn’t grab me off them and tweak my back.”

His angry demeanor disappeared in an instant. Ace took a step forward, eyes scanning her body as his voice softened. “Are you okay? Did I hurt you?”

Shocked by the sudden switch—and his concern—she shook her head. “No. I’m fine.”

The sudden grab had surprised her and put her off kilter, but he hadn’t injured her back.

He glanced into her eyes, stealing her breath as she saw the unmasked worry filling them. Wow. Who knew Mr. Ice had feelings?

“Really, Ace,” she said gently, placing a hand on his arm. “I’m okay.”

He glanced down at her hand on his arm. The air in the room thickened. A rush of heat filled her. A bolt of electricity shot through her body, her fingers tingling against his warm skin. She quickly pulled her hand back, clenching it into a fist and placing it behind her.

What the hell was that?

Pushing the moment away, Millie cleared her throat. “I know how to fall safely off the bottles. I promise you I would have been fine.”

Ace shook his head, blinking a few times before the angry scowl returned to his face. “Why the hell were you on top of those bottles in the first place? We pay you to work, Millie. Not goof around.”

And there went all her warm fuzzy feelings for this man. Jeeze, it was like Jekyll and Hyde with him.

“I was working.” She lifted onto her toes, still not high enough to be eye to eye with the Grumpy Green Giant. Lifting a finger, she poked him in the chest. “If you take a peek out that door you will see.”

Ace glanced down at her finger, raising a brow when he looked back up at her.

Maybe poking her boss wasn’t the best idea, but he was being a jerk, and she didn’t like to be pushed around. Especially not when she was making him a ton of money.

“Look,” she huffed, flopping back onto flat feet and pushing the door open a crack. “See all those people rushing to get the new drink special? I did that. It’s called creative marketing.”

Ace leaned over her. His chest pressing against her back, the heat radiating off his body nearly suffocating her with its warm, intoxicating scent. Dammit! Why did he have to be so hot? Normally it didn’t matter how attractive a person was, if they were an ass, she wasn’t attracted to them. Her body didn’t get that memo with Ace. Didn’t matter. Wasn’t like she was going to do anything about it.

In Search Of Recognition

by Jim McAllister

Genre: Self-Help

Synopsis

In Search of Recognition: The Story of Search and Rescue in British Columbia provides background on why and how organized volunteer search and rescue became a reality in the province, and how search and rescue evolved over many years to meet the increasing demands of finding lost people and rescuing those injured outdoors. The primary focus of the thousands of volunteers is to save the lives of persons lost or injured outdoors; training and fundraising for equipment and other costs also require time and energy. Through personal involvement and references, the author provides insights into how funding and other support for the volunteer service was achieved, through government, responsible agencies, organizations and individuals working together to find ways to assist those who strive “so others may live.”

.

Enjoy this peek inside:

Civil defence continued to be the focus of all levels of government in BC during the 1960s. The cold war standoff between the Soviet Union and the United States and its allies continued to escalate as nuclear capabilities grew. Air raid siren tests were common along with drills in schools in BC. Citizens in Comox were treated to the sights and sounds of Voodoo fighter jets launching to intercept Russian long-distance bombers. The RCAF remained the lead for air and marine search and rescue, from their base on Sea Island. Searches for missing aircraft and vessels in distress were numerous, as technology such as tracking and alerting systems were yet to be developed or in their infancy.

.

About Author Jim McAllister:

Jim McAllister has been involved in search and rescue for over 45 years, starting as a volunteer member in the Rocky Mountains in 1977 with Golden and District SAR and then Cranbrook SAR. He became the SAR specialist for the Province of B.C. in 2002. In 2008, Jim retired from the provincial government as a director with Emergency Management British Columbia and became a volunteer director for special projects with the British Columbia Search and Rescue Association. Jim has been involved with many major projects: the establishment of Avalanche Canada, the updating of volunteer reimbursement rates, the establishment of health and safety guidelines, the formation of a joint health and safety committee, Swiftwater Rescue standards, sustainable funding for search and rescue and the establishment of the British Columbia Search and Rescue Volunteer Memorial. Jim wrote a book on the last project, titled A Monument to Remember, and one on incidents, titled One Week in August: Stories from Search and Rescue in British Columbia.

Intimate Secret

by D.C. Stone

(Empire Blue, #6)
Publication date: April 17th 2025
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance, Suspense

A murder was captured on satellite and multiple law enforcement agencies are trying to solve it. One of the detectives on the case, Jake Gonzalez, is led right to the front door of a local author, Francesca Conti. Sparks fly as Jake realizes he’s insanely attracted to his primary suspect, and her father is one of the most ruthless mafia bosses in the city, and someone he’s been investigating for years.

Francesca wants to escape this life her father has set for her and has been putting money away, looking for her opportunity to disappear. And much to her dismay, lately her father has been pushing her toward marrying his right-hand man, someone no woman has ever been able to say no to.

Just when she thinks she’s getting closer to escaping, Detective Gonzalez lands on her doorstep asking alarming questions, and making her heart race unlike ever before.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Smashwords

~~~~~
Enjoy this peek inside:
There’s only so many times one could say they’d been shot by the woman they loved.
Jake stared at Francesca’s shaking hands wrapped around the butt
of a SIG .229. She held the gun with as much confidence as one would
expect with someone who had little to no experience with such a
weapon. Like a toddler taking their first wobbling, unsteady steps. Or
a young child holding a chicken’s egg for the first time and being told
they could break it if they weren’t careful.
Under the full moon, silver tears trickled down her face. A moderate
wind teased at hair that had escaped the messy bun held low at the back
of her head. Russet tendrils brushed along her neck and cheeks like
phantom fingers. She ignored those things. But he saw it all, as if the
world moved in slow motion, tracking the shifting of her eyes and
hands from one person to another. Saw the way her finger tightened
ever so slightly over the trigger.
The safety was off, so if she applied a touch of pressure to that metal
hook, approximately ten pounds for the first shot to go off, the gun
would fire the bullet waiting within.
“Frankie,” he called in a soothing yet firm voice, using the
nickname he’d started saying a few nights ago. One he’d discovered
she liked when he whispered it in her ear as he sank slowly inside the
heat between her legs. Her attention shifted to him for only a fraction of a second before
she refocused on Dante, her father’s right-hand man. A man many did
not want to fuck with. One who’d killed his fair share of folks both in
and out of the city. A man who was known to be one of the most ruthless
enforcers around. Dante did things in the most violent way to set
examples or make a point. It was the only way he communicated. And
it was the way he got into the position he did, leading one of the most
ruthless organizations in New York City.
And lucky, lucky Jake was currently in a three-way face-off, like
something from the Wild Wild West, with a woman he loved and a man
he’d been hunting for years.
And as if his luck couldn’t get any worse, the two had a serious
history he hadn’t been able to wrap his mind completely around.
He quickly glanced around, wishing for that backup he’d called for
about ten minutes ago to show up. But with how deep they were in
Central Park, that wish would never come to fruition in time. The dull
light coming off the yellow haze of a streetlamp reflected dark shadows
of trees in the standing puddles leftover from the rainstorm earlier. The
only sound outside the passing cars on the streets lining the park and
Frankie’s harsh breathing was that of leaves hitting the ground, the
season of fall in full swing.
“Frankie, listen to me,” he tried again, his chest growing tight with
unease. “Put the gun down. Let’s talk about this.”
“I don’t want to be a woman you love,” she said, lips trembling.
Her arms shook with either fear or adrenaline, both equally dangerous
when holding a weapon.
Jake Gonzalez’s heart clenched at the words, but he pushed them
away. He had to stay focused, had to sort through this mess and prevent
any additional loss of life. As it was, there’d already been too much.
And if she pulled that trigger, there was nothing he could do. He
wouldn’t be able to protect her. As frustrating as it was, he had an oath
to uphold. Even against a woman he loved.
Francesca Conti looked broken, disheveled, and cornered. The first
two had him angry and concerned. The last…frightened.
Syndicate Moon
Stellar Heir #2
By Scott Killian
Genre: Science Fiction
Synopsis
Jael and his crew are on the run, searching for an ancient machine that could save the galaxy, but the syndicate-controlled moon has other plans.
After uncovering an artifact that grants him extraordinary powers, Jael thought he had gained the upper hand in the lawless fringes of space. But news of his newfound abilities has spread throughout the galaxy, and a bounty is placed on his head for crimes he didn’t commit. New enemies emerge to claim the reward and old foes remain relentless in their pursuit of the artifact.
Jael is unwillingly thrust into a high-stakes game that determines control over the moon. The four crime syndicates use this brutal contest to decide who will rule, and now Jael’s fate is entangled with theirs.
Complicating matters further, a mysterious woman with a similar artifact stalks Jael across the moon, sabotaging his quest. With each step, the stakes rise, and every decision could mean life or death. Jael must fight to stay alive, protect his crew, and uncover the second Antiqui lock—before time runs out.
Enjoy this peek inside:
Black crystalline scales erupted from Jael’s skin as he threw himself in front of Merzi. The scales absorbed the impact of the slugs and heat of the beams, crystal shards crackling off with each hit.
“Whoa, whoa, hold your fire!” One of the members stepped forward —a younger man who showed obvious signs of being a human hybrid.
His skin had a subtle, iridescent sheen and bony protrusions framed his jawline. His eyes scanned Jael, one a piercing blue, the other a glowing amber. Unlike the others he was clad in a weathered leather vest with various alien ornaments dangling from his belt.
The man continued. “We’re here for Ked’Korhva, not the woman.”
“Who the void cares, Lorvel?” one of the others said. “Just waste the skwer so we can get our payday.”
Jael straightened, breathing heavily. His scales dissolved back into his flesh. “Since when do syndicates go into bounty hunting work?”
Lorvel stepped closer. “Since the price on your head hit six digits.”
“You’re really willing to die for a payday?” Jael asked, motioning for Merzi to retreat into the abandoned building.
“For that kind of money?” Lorvel grinned, raising one brow. “Absolutely.”
Jael stole a glance over his shoulder to make sure Merzi had taken cover inside. When he saw her get into position behind the broken window, he turned back towards Lorvel and the rest of the Legion lackeys.
Jael quickly raised his slug thrower, aiming for Lorvel, but a shot rang out. The gun was knocked from his grip, skidding across the walkway. He swore under his breath and cradled his stinging hand.
Lorvel had his weapon steadily trained on Jael. The two men locked eyes. Jael shook his hand, ignoring the throbbing pain and dropping into a fighting stance. The wound had already healed thanks to the Antiqui bracelet.
“The Girl of Many Crowns offers a riveting glimpse into the tumultuous life of Judith, the first princess of France, against the richly detailed backdrop of medieval Europe. D.H. Morris masterfully blends history and human drama, making Judith’s struggles both personal and profoundly symbolic of the era’s precarious politics.” – review by Gina Rae Mitchell
“D H Morris’ talent shines through in this debut. She no doubt did extensive research to bring this story to life. I loved how they were able to portray Judith. The historical details were so vivid, I felt as though I was transported back in time and living in the medieval times.” – review by Amy Campbell, Locks Hooks and Books.
“The book sent me down the rabbit hole of reading more about Baldwin Iron Arm, which itself was a super exciting bonus activity (and yes, a bonus – the author is a descendant of Baldwin Iron Arm and Judith – can you even imagine finding your ancestors back to… years 837 – 879?).” – review by @this.human.reads
ENTERING THE TIME MACHINEby D. H. Morris
Even as a child I saw history as a form of time travel. However, my life-long love affair with history makes it frustrating to read historical fiction that includes anachronisms. My quest to avoid including anything out of place in the world of The Girl of Many Crowns led me to read forty books and numerous articles about the Ninth Century. The timeline and the plot for The Girl of Many Crowns came from the annals kept by ninth-century monks at the abbey of St. Bertin. But fleshing out the events mentioned in the annals is where the research happened.  Most of that research took place during the writing process. Here are several examples:
In the ninth century kings were itinerant. They had multiple palaces and moved often from one to the next to keep an eye on their nobles, listen to legal matters, and to avoid overburdening the resources of any one region. Immediately, I was faced with the question of what these moves entailed. How many people would move in one company? How far was the distance between palaces? Did they use carts, wagons, etc.? Did they have luggage or just pack everything in straw? Striving for historical accuracy, I paused writing until I had read books on early medieval European royal courts and how they traveled. I learned about the duties of the various members of the court during such endeavors, including the role of the court jester in entertaining weary travelers.
The Girl of Many Crowns is also a book of many places as indicated by the maps included. However, I could not write about those places without researching how they looked twelve hundred years ago. What buildings were there at the time that the characters were there? What were those buildings made of and what history was behind each building or city? Of course, not all of my research made it into the book. But it was important for me to know it in order to write confidently about that time period.
Finally, not being a Catholic, myself, and finding that religion was an enormous part of the characters’ story meant that I needed to delve deeply into early medieval Catholic beliefs, controversies, popes, celebrations, as well as the order and content of the ninth-century mass.
My research started by reading the works of early medieval historian Janet L. Nelson. Her books are filled with footnotes and bibliographies leading to long lists of other scholarly sources. Wikipedia is also useful for finding sources, with one caveat. You should not rely on the opinions written in the body of any given Wikipedia article without reading the original sources cited. The primary sources for citations in Wikipedia are where the real value lies.
The Girl of Many Crowns is heavier on the “historical” rather than the “fiction” part of Historical Fiction.  I hope you will enjoy entering my time machine and traveling back with me 1200 years to a dangerous, fascinating, and adventurous period in European history.
A poem to the girl who keeps thinking about love 24/7
She’s a powerful lover
Her emotions go very deep
She falls in love fast
She fell in love through prayer
She puts her full trust in God
She thinks far into the future
She wears her heart on her sleeve
She hates giving up
There’s a certain love she’s looking for
She’s so good at being in love
It’s never too much
She’s welcoming and sweet when it comes to her space
She wants to spread a lot of love
That might be her purpose
She’s good at other things but love?
No questions about it
School’s out and The Paranormal Pursuers, PJ, Freya, Shuggie and Sunny  catch up at Starbuck’s. Things suddenly take an unexpected and spooky turn, however…
“Good to see you both.” Sunny smiles. “Sit down. Here, PJ, hot chocolate for you and Freya, a vanilla Frappuccino.” Sunny never changes – always polite and concerned for everyone else’s comfort. I give him a fist pump.
“Just what the doctor ordered, Sunny, after a day worse than being trapped in Mackenzie’s tomb!”
Everyone laughs. The smile is quickly wiped from my face, though, when I catch some familiar faces in my peripheral vision. They’re tucked away in the corner, their heads together, looking like they’re plotting something evil. It’s Heather who sees me first. She kinda gives a look of disgust and tuts audibly. I don’t know why, but they’re always huddled together in the school yard, giving me dirty looks, or pointing and sniggering whenever they see me and Freya. I give Freya, who’s absorbed in lively banter with Shuggie and Sunny, a nudge, and tilt my head surreptitiously in their direction.
“If I didn’t know any better, I’d say they were stalking us.” Freya snorts and shakes her head disdainfully. She gives the girls defiant side-eye, as if to say, you lot don’t worry me, but just as she does, there is a whoosh, followed by the clattering of breaking crockery and the three girls are screaming in horror, coffee dripping from the table and staining their clothes, a mass of broken plates and glass mugs lying in pools of milky liquid on the floor surrounding them.
Other customers are looking on in shock as one woman stands up, clutching her beads and says, “Did you see that? Those plates and coffee glasses shot up in the air of their own accord!”
“I saw it too!” A young woman in distressed jeans and white t-shirt is standing open-mouthed. “It… it’s like a ghostly hand tossed everything up from the table!”
My heart flutters wildly with excitement. Maybe I don’t have to look too far for a new investigation, after all? I’m brought back to earth with a bump as things take an unpleasant turn.
The three girls are sobbing hysterically, and a barista comes running over to see what all the commotion is about. He gives them a bunch of napkins to wipe themselves down. Heather, who is gulping in air, looks aghast and shrieks, “It’s her! Freya!” She points at Freya, whose face is ashen. “She did it. The witch! Nothing like this happened to me until she stayed with us at our other house last year. Her and her mother. They’re evil, I tell you. They make stuff happen. Her and those – those – others! They were summoning up the Mackenzie Poltergeist last year! She’s a witch, I tell you.” Heather now is gurning and wailing uncontrollably.
“Now just wait a minute! That’s not fair, Heather…” I stand up to defend Freya, but almost instantly I’m aware of my cheeks reddening in embarrassment as it’s all eyes on us, the silence deafening. “So just leave Freya alone,” I say, self-consciously sitting back down. Now I’m beginning to understand why Heather’s been so off with us. Freya has paled in open-mouthed horror, her hand shaking as she puts down her cup. Shuggie and Sunny look at each other, eyebrows raised in shock at the sudden fracas that’s developing in the far corner, which also seems to involve them.
The woman with the beads pipes up. “Now, now, dearie. Those young people over there were minding their own business. They did nothing that could have caused this.”
“Are you not listening to me?” Heather is insistent and is not backing down. “Of course she didn’t move. But she gave me the evil eye! I saw it.”
“Well, she did give you a sideways glance,” the younger woman in jeans agrees, “but I wouldn’t say it was the ‘evil eye’, as such. Anyway, there’s no such thing as witches and ghosts,” she adds definitively.
Heather is puce with anger and determination.
“Do none of you recognise them? They’re that bunch of ghost hunters that found Sophie McGregor in the Mackenzie Tomb last year. I know that Freya one! Her mum runs Magickal Moments in the Grassmarket. They’re all into witchcraft and spirits and she’s put the evil eye on me. This isn’t the first thing that’s happened!”
The barista is now looking very worried. I guess he’s thinking that business could be affected if people think there’s a poltergeist in Starbucks. Freya is shaking and looking really upset.
“Och, c’mon, guys,” says Shuggie. “Ah’m no sitting here listenin’ tae that daft girl insultin’ oor Freya and the rest of us any longer. Let’s get oot of here an’ find somewhere else tae talk.”
The Mackenzie Poltergeist
PJ and the Paranormal Pursuers Book 1
.
After his mom dies, PJ reluctantly leaves his New York home
and everyone he loves, to live with his Aunt Katie in Edinburgh. A series of
strange events begin when his aunt’s elderly neighbour and her cat Azrael
convince him that his mom, weirdly, is still very much with him.
At a bereavement counselling group, PJ makes a new group of
friends, all of whom have lost loved ones. Drawn together by their shared
experiences, they soon discover they have something else in common; an interest
in the supernatural. Freya is the daughter of a white witch, Sunny has a
scientific and enquiring mind and Shuggie, a superfan of ghost hunting
programmes. Led by PJ, they try to prove that there is life after death and
that their loved ones are still with them. The team receives strange messages leading
them to investigate Greyfriars Kirkyard where they experience terrifying
paranormal activity and PJ is drawn into the clutches of the evil Mackenzie
Poltergeist after reciting a famous rhyme that invites the restless spirit to
draw back the bolt of his scary mausoleum to allow him entry. There, he finds
himself in a fight of good against evil with the ghost of Sir George Mackenzie.
“If you are, or know someone who is a teenager with a newfound interest in the
supernatural and paranormal, this is the book for you.”
The Courier and Advertiser (Fife Edition)
“PJ and his friends make a great group of characters, and there’s lots of
laughter to be had as well as scares, while ‘auld reekie’ provides the perfect
backdrop for these ghostly goings-on.”
 LoveReading4Kids & LoveReading4Schools
“This is a terrific story for teen readers to devour on a spooky autumn
evening.”
Who are the Dogs on the Cover of PJ and The Paranormal Pursuers – The Phantoms of Pittenweem?
.
Well, the small white dog, who appeared on the cover of my first PJ book, The Mackenzie Poltergeist, was designed from a photograph of my beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Smudge. Sadly, at the time the first book went to print, Smudge, who was almost 17 had been terribly ill for a while. The book has a dedication to him but he went to the Rainbow Bridge before publication and I wanted his memory to live on. He does so as ‘Dug,’ Shuggie’s JRT in the book and as the motif on the covers. The other dog, added for the Phantoms of Pittenweem is modelled on Gus, another family dog. He was a Schnauzer who was also a lovely soul. When he wasn’t freshly groomed, he was a shaggy dog on whom I modelled Buddy, PJ’s dog. Gus had also travelled the Rainbow Bridge by the time the new book was published and he joins Smudge on the cover of my second book.
As many people will understand, the grief of losing a pet, who is very much a family member, friend and companion is hard – often just as hard as losing a human. I was devastated at the loss of Smudge and resolved never to have another dog of my own because the pain and trauma was too great. I know that many people say that you should offer another dog a happy home and believe me, I have been tempted – until that wave of grief crashes over me and reminds me of what we went through. I have written about Smudge extensively on my blog; one part (For the Love of Smudge) telling his story and the second part (I’m only talking to my dog today) which explains the strange events after his death which convinced me he was still around and sending messages to say he was OK. These can be found here: Jacqueline Dempster – Medium. I hope that the articles help those of you who find themselves grief stricken after the loss of a beloved pet.
.
.
.
My days of doggy love are not over, however. Although we don’t have any of our own, we did join an organisation called ‘Borrow my Doggy,’ which offers just what it says on the tin! For a small annual fee, you can offer to borrow other people’s doggies when they need company during the week or a place to stay when their people want to go on holiday. It’s worked out brilliantly for us and we’ve had the joy of looking after Winnie, a Jack Russell Terrier (who looks remarkably like Smudge) and Arlo who is a very cheeky little JRT/Shih Tzu cross. We also look after our grandpups, Willow (guess what – a JRT whose arrival as a pup was accurately predicted by one of the animal psychics I consulted after we lost Smudge) and Pepper, a Poodle/Bichon Frise cross. We have a new boy, Joe, (JRT) coming to visit and stay for holidays very soon! I am certain that Smudge knows that we’ll never replace him but has a hand in bringing all these perfect friends into our lives. It is very strange how all of the borrowed doggies who’ve arrived on our doorstep have been JRTs and I am certain our boy has a hand in it. To be honest, I love each one of them dearly and while they are not our dogs, the grief of losing any of them will be hard. I can console myself, however, knowing that we’ve been able to give them a welcome and the comfort of a loving home from home whenever their mums and dads need a holiday, or just to stop them getting lonely while their people are working. They return the love in spades and I wouldn’t be without them. They’ve also been very willing to read my books as you might gather from the photographs!
Jacqui Dempster
qualified as a solicitor in 1999 but now works as a malpractice investigator
for an education and qualifications organisation. She lives in Dunfermline,
Fife, with partner, Andrew, and various ‘borrowed’ doggies who visit regularly.
Jacqui loves dogs, especially Jack Russell Terriers and thinks if they ruled
the world, it would be a better place! The doggy motifs on the cover of her
books represent Dug and Buddy who belong to the characters, Shuggie and PJ. Dug
is based on Jacqui’s own beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Smudge, and her
grandpup, Gus, both of whom have sadly passed over the Rainbow Bridge.
Jacqui loves
theatre and ran performing arts schools for young people in Fife. She produced
and directed various shows at the Edinburgh Fringe. When not either working or
writing, she loves to paint and crochet, and of course, read books.
Her first
children’s book in this series, PJ and the Paranormal Pursuers– The Mackenzie
Poltergeist, was published by The Book Guild in 2021.
Jacqui explains:
“The supernatural has featured in my life since I was young, with a grandfather
who saw ghosts regularly and other members of the family, on my Welsh side,
having strange experiences and even dabbling in magic! I studied on the
Edinburgh University Koestler Parapsychology course to learn about the science
of the Paranormal. I have also been on a few ghost investigations with mixed
results.
I live in Fife
nowadays and often visit the beautiful towns and villages within the county.
Fife was one of the famous areas where ‘witches’ were persecuted, and the story
of the Pitteweem Witches is particularly well known. In my book, the story is
told for a younger reader involving a contemporary allegory about one of the
young characters, Freya, who is a Wiccan. The subject of Scotland’s witches
came up in 2022, when an apology was issued by the then First Minister of
Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon to those persecuted, tortured and executed, and MSPs
were invited to consider legislation to pardon them.
I enjoy writing
about various places we’ve visited, and especially about any with spooky
stories attached on my Medium Daily Digest blog.”
Jacqui loves
history and enjoys embracing fact with fiction in her books which she hopes
encourages not only a love of reading in young people but also the desire to
learn about events of the past which often influence the present and the
future.
Resolution
The Dog Roses Book 2
by David H. Millar
Genre: Historical Fantasy
.
Sisters squabble.
Queens go to war
.
Ten summers ago, victory brought peace and prosperity to Southern ÉriuDanu and Brighid were celebrated as heroes and saviours. The queens
scaled the heights, and there was only one way to go.
One twin became overbearing, the other resentful. Pride dug a pit filled with
blackthorns between them. They became tyrants, and the kingdom was sundered.
The people were left bitter, divided and afraid, and the lush farmlands fell
barren. Stripped of their powers, the Dog
Roses
 were no more. Each blamed the other, and neither took
responsibility.
Angry parents gave the twins’ brothers an army and tasked them to bring law to
the kingdom. An embittered veteran and a beautiful assassin accompany them.
Whose gold is in the assassin’s pouch, and what are her orders?
In the Halls of the Aes SídheDraighean is chastised and
commanded to return to her wards. “Guide them, support them, or kill them.
Just finish what you started
.”
An evil philosophy grows, and another army gathers. Can the sisters be
reconciled? The people need the Dog Roses, but can they forgive them? Yet, do
Danu and Brighid want the responsibility? Do they want their powers returned?
Being normal is very tempting.
The Dog Roses: Resolution contains
scenes of sex, violence, and language appropriate to the historical period (400
B.C.) and locations in which the story is set. It is not recommended for those
under 14 without parental consent.
5-Star Editorial Review (Literary Titan)
The Dog Roses: Resolution is a bold,
blood-soaked dive into a myth-soaked world of ancient Ériu, dripping with power
struggles, family betrayals, and queens who rule with both sword and seduction
.
It’s the second book in Millar’s Dog Roses series, and it doesn’t pull any
punches. At the heart of it are two sisters, Brighid and Danu, daughters of
legendary rulers who were meant to lead with wisdom but fell into tyranny and
chaos. When their father sends their brothers to clean up the mess, all hell
breaks loose. You’ve got ancient gods, cunning assassins, ruthless politics,
and enough battle scenes to make a Roman general blush.
If you’re into Celtic fantasy that
doesn’t tiptoe around darkness, The Dog Roses: Resolution will grip you and not
let go. I’d recommend it to fans of Bernard Cornwell, lovers of Irish
mythology, or anyone craving epic family drama with bite.
Na Feirdhriseacha
The Dog Roses Book 1
.
You have no weapons, striapach.”
“I am the weapon, tuilí.”
It is 400 B.C. The mist clears,
and three triremes glide into the calm waters of the bay in Southern Ériu. On a
grass-topped dune, a young girl dances gleefully at the Goddess’s gift.
The warrior princesses, Brighid and Danu, leap over the vessels’
sides into the cold waters and look north towards their ancestral home—the fort
of Ráth Na Conall. The clash of
weapons is not a good omen.
From his throne in Caher Conri,
the depraved Uallachán rages
at the sight of the red shield embellished with a swooping black raven and the
memories it provokes. He swears vengeance on the daughters of his old
adversary.
Draighean, a demi-goddess of the
mystical Aes Sídhe, stands
alone on the mountain peak. She bites full maroon lips, unhappy at her mission.
Yet, does she have a choice? Evil must be confronted and defeated.
Uallachán’s idea of peace is to crush all dissent, but is he no more than a
puppet of the powerful kings of the Connachta?
The twins know they must defeat the invasion and stop the enslavement of their
people. Still, even with the help of Draighean, the odds are daunting.
The Dog Roses contains
scenes of sex and violence and uses language appropriate to the period it is
set in, i.e., 400 B.C. It is not recommended for those under 14 without
parental consent.
5- Star Editorial Review & Gold Book
Award (Literary Titan)
David H. Millar’s The Dog Roses: Na
Feirdhriseacha
 is an
exhilarating historical fantasy that plunges the reader into a world of ancient
Gaelic warfare, mysticism, and political intrigue.
 The novel follows
the twin sisters, Brighid and Danu, as they navigate their birthright, destiny,
and the brutal conflicts that define their world. From the stormy shores of
Ériu to the blood-soaked battlegrounds of their homeland, the sisters must
harness their strength, wit, and the mystical bond of the feirdhriseacha—the
dog roses—imprinted on their chests. Their journey is one of leadership,
betrayal, and resilience, all set against the backdrop of Celtic mythology and
the harsh realities of Iron Age survival.
The Dog Roses: Na Feirdhriseacha is a
gripping read that will appeal to fans of historical fantasy, especially those
with an interest in Celtic mythology and ancient warrior cultures
. The
depth of world-building, the complexity of the characters, and the sheer
intensity of the storytelling make this a novel worth savoring. If you enjoy books like The Mists of Avalon
or The Last Kingdom, this one should be on your list.
  1. Meet some of the Main Characters:
    1. Brighid (28)
Hot-headed and impulsive, Brighid (BREED) is twenty-eight years old and is the fire to Danu’s (DAH-noo) ice. Disenchanted by her sister’s continual disregard for her counsel, Brighid left their stronghold for a stone headland fort. Like a younger version of her mother, Brighid has a dark streak and a talent for terror. Thus, while Danu chose to rule by bedroom intrigue, Brighid chose conquest, an iron fist and fear.
The twins’ chosen path leads the demi-goddess and custodian, Draighean (DRYNE), to strip them of their powers. For the first time, the Dog Roses are truly alone.
Like Danu, Brighid has her mother’s deep emerald eyes and her father’s auburn hair and is above-average height. Her body is swathed in swirling indigo-blue designs on her face and arms. Born as the sun rose, Brighid’s long tresses have highlights of summer gold.
  1. Danu (28)
Twenty-eight years old, Danu (DAH-noo) is the twin daughter of Conall (KON-ul) and Mórrígan (Moe-rig-gAHn) and is marginally the eldest. Danu is introverted and keeps her thoughts to herself, but she is also domineering. She is a pragmatic, strategic thinker, aloof, and prone to making decisions without consulting Brighid (BREED). This ultimately causes friction between the sisters, leading to their break-up and a divided kingdom. Danu rules her kingdom as a tyrant, using sex to forge powerful alliances.
The twins’ chosen path leads the demi-goddess and custodian, Draighean (DRYNE), to strip them of their powers. For the first time, the Dog Roses are truly alone.
Danu is above-average height; she has her mother’s deep emerald eyes and her father’s auburn hair. Born before dawn, her long tresses have highlights of silver blue. Danu’s body is swathed in swirling indigo-blue designs on her face and arms, which are energised by the sun and appear in constant motion.
  1. Draighean (Ageless)
Draighean (Blackthorn, DRYNE)) is a powerful demi-goddess of the Aes Sídhe (ASH SH-ee). Her domain is the winter and, with it, snow, hail, ice, northerly winds, and rain. She reluctantly assumes custody of Danu and Brighid. Their descent into despotism appears to justify Draighean’s low opinion of humans. She is furious with their behaviour and removes their Dog Roses’ powers. However, a more powerful Sídhe chastises her for failing her wards and commands her to return.
Draighean is ageless and a startling beauty, even for a demi-goddess. She is taller than most men and women. Pale hands, with nails painted dark red. Long, thick tresses of black rest over pale shoulders. Contrasting thin, auburn braids accent her hair and are perfectly coordinated with maroon lips and fingernails. In the rising sun, Draighean’s skin takes on an attractive, if faint, pink hue; in the moonlight, her skin changes to a faint blue tone. No one can determine her eye colour because it is so deep as to appear obsidian. Dark swirling designs cover her body.
  1. Tisiphone (26)
Tisiphone’s name means “voice of revenge” after one of the Greek Furies. Born in the Mediterranean port of Massalia (Marseille), she is the outcome of the brief liaison of an Etruscan sailor and a Greek whore. As a child, she never knew her father. Likely, if he knew of her existence, he had no ambitions to accept the role. Her mother was inattentive rather than neglectful.
At fifteen summers, Tisiphone is the whore over whom men and women lusted. As an adolescent, she becomes the assassin everyone fears. Yet she remains addicted to the ephemeral desire in men’s eyes and never deserted whoring.
Age increased Tisiphone’s sensual beauty. Brown eyes sit in a field of honey-almond skin. Thick tresses of long, chestnut-brown hair tap her ass cheeks as they rise and fall with the upward roll of her hips. She is taller than average, and her voice holds a seductive huskiness or an edge of steel as sharp as the blades she wielded.
  1. Lonán (50)
Plain-spoken and unimaginative, Lonán (LUH-nawn) is a man of few words who does not suffer fools. Once a trusted, battle-scarred veteran and efficient killing machine who fought at Conall’s (KON-ul) side, he is bitter at being repeatedly passed over for higher office due to his age. Injured at the battle for Rome, he needs a staff to walk. His injury removed his ability to show his anger, making him furious.
Lonán misinterprets, perhaps deliberately, Conall’s orders. He has no love for Danu (DAH-noo) and Brighid (BREED) and is prepared to assume the burden for their deaths.
Physically, Lonán is a mountain of a man whose body is built from granite and scar tissue. His demeanour is that of a disgruntled, resentful man who has seen his plans shatter and is not cunning enough to disguise his anger.
  1. Calman Mor (30)
At thirty summers old, Calman (CAL-man) is a tyrant and the most successful raider among the Mhór Midhe, a tribe he sees himself as its king. His demeanour is almost Druid-like, yet all know his reputation for brutality is well-deserved. He is an animal but like a wolf, not a boar. He is a monster who places no value on human life and fears neither death nor the Goddess.
A ruthless, dishonourable leader fond of violence, Calman is also astute and observant. He delights in violence, and his goals are simple: accumulating power, territory, and wealth. Like many despots, he is cruel and does not take criticism kindly. Of average height and muscular, he sports a scruffy beard. His cold, dark eyes seem devoid of humanity.
As we headed for the prison’s gates, I tried to envision what I’d seen, but I was scared to look too deeply. I knew what it meant if I did. Being empathetic, I’d take on whatever was being projected. It’d be like watching a horror film; wanting to see, yet not wanting to see, afraid to miss something important. I was doomed to be haunted.
“Cassie?” Seb’s gentle touch caused me to start as it yanked me from my thoughts. I blinked. “Sorry. I’m just trying to process it all.” Seb squeezed my hand.
Once again, I felt grateful to have such an understanding brother.  I owed so much to him.  After all, it was he who discovered what my gifts were. For a long time, I thought there was something wrong with me; that I was crazy – cursed even. I’d engaged in cutting and locking myself away. When Seb realised what I was doing, he got me the help I needed.  He stopped my self-imposed alienation, ended my suffering, and helped me to understand what I am.
Luckily, I’m not that fragile anymore. But he’s never stopped protecting me – from others or myself.
“Can you tell me anything else?” he asked after a moment. “Give me something to go on?  We’ve got to link Plinth categorically to Chantelle.”
“He’s a horrible man, but I need to sort through it.” I pinched the bridge of my nose. “Chantelle’s saying nothing. All I see is her face, staring, and I’m consumed by her palpable fear.” Frustrated with both him and myself, I snapped, “It’s all just images and emotions, and honestly, the rest I’m afraid to look at.”
“I get that, but he thinks he’s got one over us because we can’t prove it yet. We’re going through everything, piece by piece – his house, his friends, including the one you told us about from the cafe. Basically, we’re taking his life apart.”
A dark malevolent spirit followed me around, and so far, I’d not acknowledged it. Although lost souls are with us every day, they are usually harmless. As a clairvoyant, I see them all the time. Unless I’m using my gift, I pay them no heed. But this felt different.
Ignoring it was a mistake, which I would realise later. The early hours of the morning saw me return home as dawn stretched its fingers across the sky. A display of orange streaks bathed the area in an eerie glow.
I inserted the key into the lock of the flat I’ve lived in for the last nine years. The plain brown door sat between two shop fronts on the high street, and my entrance was the only one at the top.
As the door shut behind me, the hairs on my neck stood on end. I wasn’t alone. Blindly, I reached for the light switch and snapped it on.
The lone bulb dimly illuminated the staircase ahead, and, immediately, I saw the source of my reaction. A dim radiance lingered on the landing above. It had no worldly form, just a residue of smoky greys and shades of black. The middle appeared denser and resembled the clouds of an impending storm.
A frosty air wrapped around me as I stared up at it. For a fraction of a second, there was a standoff before it rushed in my direction. The breath caught in my throat as the entity passed through me.
In its haste to retreat, it almost knocked me off my feet. My core chilled from its icy blast, and I watched it disappear through the cracks in the front door and out into the high street.
My home had always been my safe place. This was the first time I’d found something here. It had come for me. The question was, why?
Hastily, I legged it up the stairs as annoyance trickled through me. What did it want? Why was it here?
I knew it wouldn’t enter my flat itself unless I invited it, because nothing ever had before. The invitation could be in the form of a build-up of uneasiness and alarm. The spirits liked us to be afraid; it gave them power.
Entities like that thrived on our terrors. It gave them substance. But they didn’t frighten me. My gift of clairvoyance meant I was unafraid of the dead. What did it want? I asked myself.
Shadowy figures moved around us, unaware of our presence. Wispy imprints of people who probably didn’t know they were dead, still doing what they always had.
My eyes homed in on the frightened girl I saw earlier. She looked happier now as she busied herself in the kitchen.
Someone referred to her by name. It was a whisper that barely ruffled the air. “Isabelle,” I murmured. She stopped and stared right at me as her form solidified.
Rachel gasped; her voice trembled. “I know that name. I’ve heard it before.”
My gaze remained fixed on the apparition; its ethereal glow seemed to pulse faintly in the dim light. She was the only black face amongst white.
As Isabelle hovered in front of me, I saw her properly for the first time. Realising that someone had brought her here as a slave to work in a rich man’s house was shocking. No wonder she had looked so terrified when I saw her when Damien brought me here.
Short, tight afro hair framed a petite face with large brown eyes. She blinked several times, as if unsure she really saw me.
“Isabelle,” I said again. The girl glanced at me as she moved silently between us.  Her gazed rested back on me.
Rachel’s cheeks turned pale as she stared at her.
The boys were oblivious to what was taking place.
Rachel and I followed the young woman towards the stairs.
The brothers watched the scene curiously, clearly not understanding what was happening.
Isabelle mounted the staircase and halfway up, she stopped and looked briefly at us, before proceeding.
“What’s going on?” Daniel asked.
“Don’t you see her?” his wife whispered.
“Who?”
Rachel glanced at me, and I shook my head and went upstairs after the apparition. Rachel followed.
The guys stayed at the bottom, and as we rounded the corner to the next flight, Isabelle disappeared.
Farmerville
“You know what? My wife watches Dr. Phil, and I’ve had to listen to it, and I’m going to tell you right now, not even Dr. Phil can fix this.”
“And you eat ’em?” Ron asked with disdain, generating a laugh from Dwayne.
“Ha! You know it’s Halloween week, but you know, for us, every week is Halloween…”
Our Narrator
I told you in the beginning you would not like our town, and by now you know one of the reasons why. What did Ron mean when he warned that everything would change?
As our story continues, the previous night’s traumatic outcomes had a disturbing impact on Ron and his daughter Laura, and stirred up a previous devastating family event. Ron’s good friends Jack, Charles, and Mark pay him a visit, and Laura experiences unsettling flashbacks and finds a boyfriend. Will the supposed witch doctor of Farmerville make foreshadowing predictions, and will another Farmerville secret, Valkyrie, be in danger of being exposed by a young ambitious journalist?
Lisa heard the door close and slowly removed the hood, adjusted her eyes as she looked around, and then saw a man sitting at a table. What?
Her husband met her gaze and started to laugh.
“I know that smell! I know that smell! You guys can’t be serious. Come on, guys, seriously… Why are we at a pig farm?”
