My Review

I’ve read several stories where I knew how it ended before it began. It really worked with this book.

Imagine Network thought it would be a real money maker to launch an expedition to the Marianna Trench to prove the myth about mermaids was true. When the Atargatis was later found adrift, it’s decks splattered with blood and all people on board gone, they used some found footage to discover what happened on the fateful voyage.

That wicked cover promised some evil mermaids. I sure got those. They might not have made their appearance til well into the story, but everything I read before that was just as entertaining. Mira fleshed out her characters just enough for me to connect with them and her scientific approach to what the creatures were was fascinating and surprising. And when she finally brought those mermaids to the surface, it was a very unpleasant meeting.

It’s been said that the bottom of the ocean is the last unexplored place on our planet. Who knows what dwells in the deep. I think that’s part of why I enjoyed this book as much as I did. The idea of mermaids as a myth or genuine. Who knows. Friend or foe. Who knows. And what if they are real? What happens then?

I watched the movie Jaws when it first came out. Many years later I moved to a coastal town. The first time I stepped in the ocean, I spotted a wave curling towards shore and all I could think was is there a shark in there. I never truly felt comfortable swimming in the sea because of that movie. Now I have something else to make me hesitate to enter the water. I wouldn’t want to have a close encounter with Mira’s mermaids.

Rolling In The Deep is a novella sized story with a super sized bite. I had a blast reading it and immediately went on line and grabbed the follow up book, Into The Drowning Deep.

If you love evil mermaids, this is one you should dive into. It was all kinds of creepy fun for me.

Synopsis

When the Imagine Network commissioned a documentary on mermaids, to be filmed from the cruise ship Atargatis, they expected what they had always received before: an assortment of eyewitness reports that proved nothing, some footage that proved even less, and the kind of ratings that only came from peddling imaginary creatures to the masses.

They didn’t expect actual mermaids.  They certainly didn’t expect those mermaids to have teeth.

This is the story of the Atargatis, lost at sea with all hands.  Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a maritime tragedy.  Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the bathypelagic zone in the Mariana Trench…and the depths are very good at keeping secrets

Strange Blood: 71 Essays on Offbeat and Underrated Vampire Movies by Vanessa Morgan (ebook)

This is an overview of the most offbeat and underrated vampire movies spanning nine decades and 23 countries.

Strange Blood encompasses well-known hits as well as obscurities that differ from your standard fang fare by turning genre conventions on their head. Here, vampires come in the form of cars, pets, aliens, mechanical objects, gorillas, or floating heads. And when they do look like a demonic monster or an aristocratic Count or Countess, they break the mold in terms of imagery, style, or setting. Leading horror writers, filmmakers, actors, distributors, academics, and programmers present their favorite vampire films through in-depth essays, providing background information, analysis, and trivia regarding the various films. Some of these stories are hilarious, some are terrifying, some are touching, and some are just plain weird. Not all of these movies line up with the critical consensus, yet they have one thing in common: they are unlike anything you’ve ever seen in the world of vampires. Just when you thought that the children of the night had become a tired trope, it turns out they have quite a diverse inventory after all.

Peripheral Visions: The Complete Ghost Stories 1988-2015 by Robert Hood (ebook)

Peripheral Visions is a unique reference collection that includes all of Robert Hood’s 44 ghost stories to date, three of them especially written for this volume. These memorable tales display Hood’s uncanny ability to make the fantastic real, to embrace weirdness and create human characters whose lives – both inner and outer – haunted by mortality, are laid bare and revealed to be our own worst nightmares. Ranging from melancholy reflection on life and death, through disquieting tales of dark humor and vengeance, to chilling visions of ghostly apocalypse. Hood’s stories are sure to draw you into a terrifying world that in the end is revealed to be irrefutably our own. Though many of these stories draw on the traditions of the past, they are far from traditional in approach.

As you turn each page remember this: not everything here is as it seems. There’s always something more, barely glimpsed, out there on the periphery.

Each section has an evocative, disturbing illustration by noted artist, Nick Stathopoulos.

 The Farm

by Amy Cross

Genre:  Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

You get two for one in this book.

It begins in 1979 when Sara and her sister come across a dead body in the river. Waiting for her sister to return with help, Sara meets a mysterious man who claims to be Death. Not long after, bad things visit the family.

Flash forward thirty years. Paula and her father move into the old abandoned farm he bought at a bargain price because of it’s tragic history. She’s excited to learn it’s rumored to be haunted and she hopes to encounter ghosts. She should have been careful what she wished for.

I’ve read many of Amy’s books and she always manages to give me the chills. She did it again with The Farm. I like reading scary books at night. You get such vibes when it’s dark out and all is still. I managed to creepy myself out as the story got darker, the two separate stories came together and the horror come out to play.

I felt a strong connection to many of the characters and that made reading about some of the horrific things that happened to them hard to swallow. I wanted to go back and change the past and to warn Paula and her father about what was really haunting the old farm.

Be prepared. This is a true horror haunting.

Synopsis

One farm. Two tragedies, thirty years apart. And a tortured figure whose presence connects both incidents… In 1979, the Bondalen family farm in Norway is home to three young girls. As winter fades to spring, Elizabeth, Kari and Sara each come to face the secrets of the barn, and they each emerge with their own injuries. But someone else is lurking nearby, a man who claims to be Death incarnate, and for these three girls the spring of 1979 is set to end in tragedy. Today, the farm has finally been sold to a new family. Dragged from London by her widowed father, Paula Ridley hates the idea of rural life. Soon, however, she starts to realize that her new home retains hints of its horrific past, while the darkness of the barn still awaits anyone who dares venture inside. Set over the course of several decades, The Farm is a horror novel about people who live with no idea of the terror in their midst, and about a girl who finally has to confront a creature that has been feeding on the farm’s inhabitants for generations…

 In One Fell Swoop

by Willow Rose

Genre:  Horror / Thriller

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I was curious about this after taking a close look at the cover. Having read many of Willow’s books, I spotted those vines and my imagination took flight. The author sets the tone right from the beginning. Camping in the Green Swamps of Florida. Creepy woods. Campers disappear. Oh yeah, this was gonna be fun.

They say you don’t fool with Mother Nature and they’re right. She bites back. But so does Patty. Her grandson is one of the missing campers and she enters the woods, bound and determined to find him.

So much happens in this book. I want to tell you about this scene. And that scene. And how wildly imaginative the author got with the ways Mother Nature took her revenge. Crazy stuff. And great for a movie.

Beware. The woods are dark and deep. Scary things creep.

Synopsis

Fasten your sea tbelts as Willow Rose takes you on one scary, wildly imaginative ride. For anyone who loves a good thriller, this is a treat.

On a hot day in June, two groups of campers disappear in the Green Swamps of Florida. The wood is still burning in the bonfire, all their belongings are abandoned, and there is blood at the campground. But not a single body is found.

Patty McGee, the grandmother to one of the missing campers, sets out to find out what happened to her grandson, thinking his father might have kidnapped him. However, soon she realizes she is up against a force way more powerful than that. It’s a battle even she can’t win.

From the Queen of Scream comes a scary, yet humorous tale of man’s battle against nature. In One Fell Swoop is a compelling and clever story, as only Willow Rose can deliver.

 The Dark Game

by Jonathan Janz

42762686

Genre:  Horror

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

It took me a bit to really get into this book. I’m thinking it was because there were so many characters to keep track of. I knew that wouldn’t be a problem later though. This is a horror story after all. And when you have a group of writers thrown together in an isolated mansion, all vying for a chance at three million dollars if they win a crazy recluse’s game, you know the numbers will decrease.

Some of the characters were likeable, at first. Some, not at all. Once the game began, their secrets, their dark ambitions came out to play. And dark things began to happen. This was my favorite part. I love it when a group of people are thrown into dangerous situations. You see who steps up. Who fails right out of the gate. And who uses every trick in the book to survive. Their true character comes into the light.

Once I got familiar with who was who and what the game was, I had a really good read. Janz built layers of mystery and atmosphere, and then added in the surprises, the horror, I was waiting for. The last third of the book was fast and furious. What a trip.

I’ve read and enjoyed several of Alan’s books and always happy to get my hands on another one. Especially when it’s a blend of crime story and horror of the supernatural kind.

Matt has a power. A dark one. He wields it in horrific fashion against those who commit horrendous crimes. Woe to those who deserve his kind of attention. I actually cringed at a scene in the first chapter.

Amy has a special power too. Though she uses it in a completely different way. I appreciated how the author included some things that I often thought about myself. Where and why do we draw the line? She came across as compassionate and brave.

Then there’s the mob boss. This is where the crime part of the story comes in. He knows of Matt’s talents. Seen his work. And wants him to be his assassin. Matt wants nothing to do with him and you can imagine how the mobster responds to his refusal.

Can you call a crime / horror story poetic, maybe even beautiful? You can when the author pens a story like Devouring Dark. Just like the cover, it’s dark yet lovely.

Synopsis

DEVOURING DARK is an urban horror novel about a man plagued since childhood by a malevolent darkness that threatens to consume him. After a lifetime spent wrestling for control over this onslaught, Matt McLeod has learned to wield his mysterious paranormal skill to achieve an odious goal: retribution as a supernatural vigilante.

When one such hit goes bad, McLeod finds himself ensnared in a multi-tentacled criminal enterprise caught between a corrupt cop and a brutal mobster. His only promise of salvation may be a bewitching woman who shares his dark talent but has murderous designs of her own.

The gritty thriller DEVOURING DARK is based on Baxter’s award-winning short story Shadows of the Lonely Dead.

THE NIGHT WEAVER
by Monique Snyman
Genre: Young Adult
Publisher: Vesuvian Books
Release date: October 15th

SHADOW GROVE IS A PERFECTLY PLEASANT TOWN …

Shadow Grove isn’t a typical town. Bad things happen here. Children disappear, one after the other, and nobody is doing anything about it. Parents don’t grieve, missing posters don’t line the streets, and the sheriff seems unconcerned.

Seventeen-year-old Rachel Cleary lives on the outskirts of Shadow Grove, next to the creepy forest everyone pretends doesn’t exist. Usually the forest is filled with an eerie calm, an unmistakable graveyard solemnity. But the trees have started whispering, forgotten creatures are stirring, and the nights feel darker than ever.

Something is stalking the residents of Shadow Grove, changing them into brain-dead caricatures of themselves. It’s up to Rachel to stop the devouring of her hometown before all is destroyed and everyone she loves is forever lost.

Teaser

She feels a pang of guilt for ignoring the ACCESS PROHIBITED sign, but the guilt soon turns into concern for her hometown, for the people who live there, for the children who are gone. Is this what they’re up against? Is this unseen entity, this monster with the strength of a bulldozer, the crux of Shadow Grove’s problems?

 Fossil River

My Review

The United States is on the brink of disaster. They are running out of oil and it’s only a matter of time before the country goes dark. When a huge deposit of oil is discovered in a remote Alaskan National Reserve, the choice is simple. Plunder the park, but try to leave the smallest footprint possible. Only problem is, something has already made a claim on the land. Something ancient and deadly.

I wasn’t going to tell you what the ancient creatures were, but the blurb gives it away. It’s dinosaurs. Smart ones. They can perform coordinated attacks. Are almost impossible to defend against. And they don’t like us in their territory. That’s my kind of story and I ate this up. And how fun that the very thing we get oil from is the very thing that bars our access.

There are plenty of characters. Those that become dinosaur chum. Those that fight for protecting the dinosaurs. And Those that want to go in and bomb them back into extinction. And those caught in the middle. I really became attached to some. And that made for thrilling reading.

Lots of books give you bits and pieces about the creatures they feature. In Fossil River you get lots of up close and personal encounters. There are plenty of tense scenes. Especially when they start to encounter the dinosaurs. A military team goes in and things get nuts. I accepted that some of the characters I liked would meet their end. And so would some of the dinosaurs. It saddened me. But the suspense was greater because of those very things.

I liked this one a lot. Read it twice. And will probably read it again when I’m in the mood for some dinosaur mayhem.

Synopsis

Fossil fuel has an ageless affinity with dinosaurs. To create oil, dinosaurs died. Now the tables are turning!

The perfect energy storm is sweeping over the United States: Japan’s Fukushima nuclear plant meltdown has paralyzed nuclear expansion globally, BP’s Gulf of Mexico oil spill has stalled deep water drilling, Arab oil countries are in turmoil causing doubt about access to future oil, the intensity of hurricanes hitting the Gulf’s oil rigs and refineries has intensified due to global warming, and the nation’s Strategic Oil Supply is riding on empty.

As the energy storm intensifies, the nation’s access to Arab oil, once supplying over sixty percent of our fossil fuel, is being threatened causing people to panic for lack of gas at the pumps, stranding cars across the country and inciting riots.

The U.S. Military is forced to cut back air, land, and sea operations sucking up 58% of every barrel of oil to protect the nation; U.S. commercial airlines are forced to limit flights for lack of jet fuel; and businesses are challenged to power up their factories, and offices as the U.S. Department of Energy desperately tries to provide a balance of electric power from the network of aged power plants and transmission lines that power up the nation.

The United States must find new sources of domestic fossil fuel urgently or face an energy crisis that will plunge the nation into a deep depression worse than 1929.

The energy storm is very real and happening this very moment. But, at the last moment of desperation, the United States discovers the world’s largest fossil fuel deposit found in a remote inaccessible mountain range within Alaska’s Noatak National Preserve surrounding six and a half million acres.

Preventing access to the oil is a colony of living fossil dinosaurs that will protect its territory to the death.

Nobody gets out alive; nobody can identify the predator–until Dr. Kimberly Fulton, Curator of Paleontology at New York’s Museum of Natural History, is flown into the inaccessible area by Scott Chandler, the Marine veteran helicopter pilot who’s the Park’s Manager of Wildlife. All hell breaks loose when Fulton’s teenage son and his girlfriend vanish into the Park.

Will the nation’s military be paralyzed for lack of mobility fuel, and will people across America run out of gas and be stranded, or will the U.S. Military succeed in penetrating this remote mountain range in northwestern Alaska to restore fossil fuel supplies in time to save the nation from the worst energy driven catastrophe in recorded history?
