I’m enjoying a long weekend due to the Thanksgiving holiday and movies are on the agenda. I just finished watching Big Legend. Have you seen it yet?

I’m a big fan of Sasquatch. I love the big hairy guy and I had high hopes for this movie. It didn’t disappoint.

Kevin Makely gives a great performance as a damaged man out for revenge after something takes his fiancee while camping in the woods. When he returns a year later to find out what  happened to her, it doesn’t take long for the answer to come calling. Todd A. Robinson plays a supporting role as Eli. He’s part comic relief and part the guy you’d want by your side in a fight.   The cameo appearances of Adrienne Barbeau and Lance Henriksen were good too. As Tyler’s mother, I loved that she supported him and backed his play. I watched this with my son and it was right near the end that we realized Lance hadn’t made an appearance. We were talking about that and then there he was. Playing the mystery character we’d just been pondering. It wouldn’t be a good Sasquatch movie without him.

The ending was a bonus. Got me thinking of some audible books in the dark suburban horror category I’m listening to by Bill Schweigart. This movie felt very similar.

The scenery was gorgeous. The acting was strong. And I didn’t really see any scenes that felt forced or lame. Plus, the creature was pretty terrifying. I liked what they came up with. Being always on the lookout for the next good creature feature, I was glad to find this one. If you’re a fan of this kind of movie, I’m thinking you’ll enjoy Big Legend. Not saying you’ll love it as much as I did, but you never know. I’m giving this a big thumbs up.

Welcome to my Saturday Screams where I share books and movies that, well, make you scream! Here’s a movie I watched this week. Might not be horror but it had some eerie scenes.

The Titan

I liked Sam Worthington in Avatar so I gave this a go. Earth is dying and humanity faces extinction. In a desperate attempt to survive, a project begins to make a superhuman race that can survive on Titan, the only planet that we might be able to colonize.

This movie was eerie. I didn’t expect to get so wrapped up in it. Once the soldiers started to change, I knew it wasn’t going to be pretty. I got quite mad at some parts, and cried at one toughing scene. My son came out to get something from the fridge and ended up standing in the living room to watch the last half.

The Titan might not be a blockbuster, but I’m glad I watched it. The one niggle I had, there were a few times when the action scenes jumped forward. You didn’t see how the situations were resolved, just the aftermath, and were filled in by the dialogue.

Okay, one more niggle. In the end it almost seemed pointless. If we alter human DNA too much so we can survive on Titan, are we still technically human?

Many people might find this movie sucks. Some plot holes and areas that don’t make sense. It’s science fiction don’t ya know. Just let it all go, try not to over think it, and you might enjoy this.

Had to give it three stars. It made me cry. I’m such a light weight about sad scenes. LOL

Welcome to My Monday Minis Reviews where I share short reviews of books I’ve read. For today I’ll be sharing reviews for The martian by Andy Weir, the book and the movie.

My Review

You’d never know it from the jocular beginning, but in moments, s#!t will hit the fan.

The author wastes no time in putting his characters in jeopardy. Beginning years away from home, the first to walk on Mars, these astronauts know the risks. When Mark Watney disappears and is presumed dead during a dust storm, the crew must abort the mission and return home without him.

Wouldn’t they be shocked and horrified to learn that not only did Mark survive, he’s actually colonized Mars.

With so many reviews already written, this won’t be a long one.

I loved this book. From the beginning, I couldn’t wait to read the next paragraph, the next chapter. The humor helps lighten the suspense the author puts you through. There’s no guarantee an author won’t kill off his characters, even the heroes, so you can’t relax, can’t count on anything. Each time something went wrong, I thought, this is it.

I used to think I’d love to travel in space. Not anymore. I’m too old and too fond of my life to endanger it. I fully expect us to one day walk on Mars. Look at all of the amazing things we’ve done already.

Until then, I’ll enjoy books like these, and when I’m done reading, I’ll turn off the light and dream of space from the comfort of my own bed.

Synopsis

Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars.

Now, he’s sure he’ll be the first person to die there.

After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he’s alive—and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive.

Chances are, though, he won’t have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plain-old “human error” are much more likely to kill him first.

But Mark isn’t ready to give up yet. Drawing on his ingenuity, his engineering skills—and a relentless, dogged refusal to quit—he steadfastly confronts one seemingly insurmountable obstacle after the next. Will his resourcefulness be enough to overcome the impossible odds against him?

And now for the movie!

My Review

Holy cow! If you think the book is fabulous, wait until you see the movie.

The cinematography is out of this world, the casting is awesome, and the scenes you loved in the book come to life in dramatic and fun ways. Careful if you are drinking anything during the movie. I almost spit tea all over the place at one of those comedic scenes.

I’m not a huge fan of Mark Damon, cast as Mark Watney. His most memorable movies for me were The Talented Mr. Ripley and The Bourne series. He won me over with his superb acting. He had to carry most of the movie by himself.

For all of you ladies, I don’t know about you, but is he not ruggedly handsome now. I wonder why men get better looking with time, and we women fight gravity, literally. LOL

I read the book first. Usually do. I’d recommend you do that so you get more indepth info about the characters and their thoughts. Makes for a richer experience.

Bravo to Andy Weir. Out of this world!
