Lancaster HouseLancaster House by Taylor DeanPaperback, 304 pagesPublished June 7th 2012 by CreatespacePremise: Zoe Grayson needs a change. So, she moves to another state, purchases an old, dilapidated 1920s Victorian Mansion, and sets out to restore it to its former glory. As she begins the restoration, she finds herself falling in love with the old house . . . not to mention its illustrious builder, Mr. Lancaster. Zoe becomes obsessed with the house as she discovers its secrets; hidden rooms, secret passageways . . . and a mysterious man who seems to think the house is his. Who is he? More importantly, how does he live in her home unseen and unheard?

The unexpected answers leave her reeling—and questioning everything she’s ever known. To her dismay, Zoe’s actions land her in the local psychiatric hospital, scheming for ways to return to Lancaster House . . . and the love of her life.

Premise:

Zoe Grayson is back in Lancaster House, ordered to bed rest for the duration of her unexpected pregnancy. Doctor Wade Channing, her overzealous psychiatrist, is living in Lancaster House, taking care of her, waiting on her, and tending to her every need. It seems to be the perfect arrangement.

There’s just one catch.

She has to tell him her story—everything that has happened in her life since the moment she escaped from Serenity Hills. It’s been quite an adventure to include renovating another home and a walk down the middle aisle.

But, that’s all over now. Nothing is real. It never was.

How did she end up in this miserable situation?

The Doctor: An
excerpt from Lancaster House
*If you missed
yesterday’s post which included an excerpt from The Middle Aisle using slang
from the nineteen-twenties, then put down your tea and slip out of this hidden sitting room back to icultgen. . .
Doctor Wade Channing
is the psychiatrist in the Lancaster House series. In writing him, I found
myself debating his personality traits. Should he by the stereotypical ‘evil
psychiatrist?’ Nah, to overdone. Should he fall I love with Zoe? Nah, to
unprofessional and the reader will lose all faith in him. Should he be a main
character or just someone Zoe rehearses her story to?
In the end, Doctor
Wade Channing becomes the kind, benevolent doctor who truly wants Zoe to see
the error in her ways. He really wants to help her realize her delusions. He
loves her, yes, but he loves her as his patient, not in a weird-creepy way.
Doctor Channing very much becomes a main character in that he is the person Zoe
fears, the person who has the power to take her life away from her and keep her
from Andre. That reason alone makes him the enemy. I consulted my
psychology-degreed daughter as I wrote Doctor Channing. How would he act in
this situation? What would he say? She helped me immensely. Otherwise I
wouldn’t have had a clue as to how to write him!
That being said,
here’s one of my favorite exchanges between Doctor Channing and Zoe:
Doctor
Channing rubbed his forehead in pain, his legs propped up on his desk. He let
out his breath as it whistled through the cracks between his teeth. He studied
her contemplatively. So far, he’d been completely unsuccessful in breaking down
Zoe’s belief in her story. He couldn’t even break off a chink in her armor and
he was frustrated. After sitting in silence for several minutes, Zoe finally
asked, “Don’t you have anything to say?”
“Do
you wish you could have saved your father, Zoe?”
“What
kind of a question is that?”
“Is
is true that he died in your arms?”
Zoe
visibly paled. “Yes,” she said almost inaudibly. “He had a heart attack right
before my very eyes. I held him while awaiting the ambulance. He was gone
before they even arrived. I’ve never felt so powerless in my life. I suddenly
knew nothing was in my control . . . nothing.”
“So
you created an immortal being, one that feels no pain, can never die, and never
leave you. He awaits you forever. All you have to do is go home and there he
is, waiting for you. It’s all very opportune, isn’t it, Zoe?”
Zoe
said nothing. Her eyes lowered and she stared at the ground.
Wade
knew he was on to something. He stayed completely calm, sitting in his casual
manner, yet he verbally attacked her, letting his words roll off his tongue as
they hit her with striking force. “You’re right, he’s the perfect man. A man
who scoffs at porn, a man who can only take intimacy so far, a man who sees the
sheer goodness in you, a man who loves to help you redecorate the house . . .”
With each statement, he didn’t hide the dripping sarcasm in his voice.
“Stop
it.” Zoe paled and her hands shook in her lap.
“A
man who would never dream of hurting you in any way, a man who loves to simply
look upon you day after day, a man who needs nothing as he doesn’t need to eat
or even sleep, a man who spontaneously gives you piggyback rides, a man who
puts you to sleep when life gets rough . . .” His words were thick with
disdain.
“Shut
up.” She was becoming defensive, tense.
He
was only just warming up. It was time for her to face reality. “A man who can
never cheat on you, a man who can never leave the house, a man who kills for
your honor, a man who can read your mind, a man filled with tender emotions, a
man who loves to simply touch you and nothing more, a man who no other woman is
after as you are the only one who can see him—it’s all very convenient,
wouldn’t you say, Zoe? What woman wouldn’t fall in love with such a paragon of
a man?”
The
only way he was aware of her reaction was the pronounced rise and fall of her
chest.
“You
know nothing,” she said through gritted teeth.
“I’d
say I hit the nail on the proverbial head. Andre is a combination of your
perfect father and what you wished Connor was, all rolled into one faultless,
handsome little package. Only everything is in your control. You say when,
where, and how. You say sit, stay, and roll over. Did you pat Andre on the head
and say, ‘good boy.’ Did you give him a treat for good behavior?”
 Zoe
shot to her feet and screamed at him, “Shut up!” The orderly was in the room
immediately and held a writhing Zoe in his strong arms. She struggled
frantically. “You know nothing about love, you cocky, little jerk!” And then to
the orderly, “Let go of me!” She turned on Wade again, “Go ahead, sit behind
your safe little desk like the coward you are. Who do you think you are? You have
no right to judge me! None!”
The
orderly took her away and as they walked down the hallway, her screams could be
heard throughout the hospital.
Wade
smiled, pleased with her reaction. He’d hit a nerve. She could rail at him all
day, as long as it got her thinking about her delusions and facing the cold,
hard truth.
He
wouldn’t give her something to help her sleep tonight. She needed to dwell on
it, sulk over it—brood in it.

Welcome to my stop on this amazing event organized with I Luv Tours

Touching EVil Tour Banner

I’m hosting two stops in the tour.

Today it’s all about Furthermore!

This anthology has many authors, some you’ll recognize and some you need to get to know.

Furthermore: An Anthology

goodreads-badge-add-plus for awaken

A first date, a lottery, treachery and deceit. Sometimes fate has other plans. Sometimes there’s
more to tell.

In Furthermore: An Anthology, eighteen original stories take you on a journey through worlds here and beyond. From the depths of the earth to the embrace of the sea, your favorite series continue. Prequels,
alternative views, and new scenes give readers a chance to experience more than originally told.

Including stories from Rebekah Campbell, Amber Garr, David Estes, Leigh Michael, Karen Amanda Hooper, Stephanie Judice, and Mayandree Michael. And most importantly, in honor of those who lost the battle and those who continue to fight, all proceeds from this anthology will be donated to cancer research and support.

SURPRISE VISITOR -Emily has never been a fan of surprises but Eric has something up his sleeve to change her mind. (The Darkness Through The Light Series)

I wasn’t sure where this story was going to take me, so I was just as surprised as Emily when she walked through that door. You will be too.

GETTING TO KNOW THE HEAVIES – The two Sullivan bodyguards are still human beings underneath it all. And everyone has a weakness. (The Darkness Through The Light Series)

At first I thought the weakness was the cupcakes. Then I thought it was the girl. Now I think it’s a couple of different things. You tell me.

This one is a puzzle and I like puzzles.

PEOPLE CHANGE – When Eric asks his dad a question about his mother, it’s time to go back to where it
all began and then went so badly wrong. (The Darkness Through The Light Series)

This one starts out really fun, but then life gets in the way. If it looks like I’m crying, I’m not.

“There’s a fly in my eye, just trying to drown it, that’s all.

COLD FEET – Kain witnesses Eviana’s deceit on their wedding day and is forced to deal with the consequences of her behavior. (The Syrenka Series)

This marriage would unite the clans.

Kain loved her, but she loved another.

He could stop her, but could he blame her? Blame her for loving another?

This one made me wonder what I’d do. How I’d feel.

RIFT – Daniel encourages the group to make a detour to the Grand Canyon, as the distance between the friends begins to rival the great ravine. (The Syrenka Series)

When two people have wounded hearts, one has a grudge, and another is happily oblivious, you can bet this trip won’t be boring.

Something unexpected happens.

This trip could heal the rift, or drive the wedge deeper.

This one kept me on my toes.

DISCOVERY – Leila’s first encounter with her psychic mentor is nothing short of memorable. (The Leila Marx Novels)

Wherever Leila goes, she makes sure to seek out the real psychics. When she checks on this one, there’s no doubt she’s the real deal, and going to be a good friend.

The psychic was so real, she made me feel right at home.

HUMAN RESOURCES – Blake finds a new job while Mac finds a friend who reminds him of home. (The Leila Marx Novels)

Sometimes people just find each other. When Blake walked into Mac’s store it was a perfect fit.

I want to be able to do what Mac does.

THE RUNAWAY- TAWNI’S STORY – After learning of her parents’ treachery, Tawni leaves home seeking to make amends for their transgressions. (The Dwellers Saga)

Tawni is a brave girl. It takes guts to set out on your own. She can’t stay. Not after what she overheard from her parents. What they did was unforgivable. But she’s not walking away.

“I’m running away.”

“I’m.”

“Running.”

“Away.”

I hope she can run far enough.

THE LIFE LOTTERY- A STORY FROM YEAR ZERO – With the survival of the human race on the brink, there’s only one way to decide who will be saved in the underground caves: The Lottery. (The Dwellers
Saga)

What would you do?

If you were picked and the rest of your family wasn’t, would you go?

Even if they insisted, wanted to see you survive?

This was intense.

FATE: Experience Annabelle’s struggle to fulfill the ABA Prophecy in a new light through the parting words of Adrian, Aurelia, Blake, and Lady Katherine. (Annabelle’s Story)

Annabelle grapples with the discovery that she’s not completely human and is pulled into a world filled with encandanto’s, selkies, mermen and other creatures she once believed were only myths.

She didn’t even know this world existed and now she has a huge role to play in it.

Will these people be able to help her fulfill her destiny and keep her alive?

I would love to be swept into the jetstream with Annabelle and Adrian.

THE SOUND OF LOVE – Glimpse into one of Nathaniel’s previous lives and see how his soul mate reacts when tragedy strikes. (The Kindrily Series)

Mary feels like it’s all her fault. Nathaniel shrugs it off as an accident, no big deal.

He knows time heals all wounds.

I wonder if there is a love like theirs?

MUIRNE’S MELODY–To escape her master’s vile desires, Muirne flees into the snow-swept night, finding a green-eyed stranger and a mystical destiny. (Saga of the Setti Series)

Can a slave find happiness in the arms of a stranger. Will she taste freedom in his arms? Or will she be his slave now?

JEREMY’S HEART: Calm, cool, and complete scoundrel, Jeremy realizes the loss he’s suffered means nothing compared to true love. (Saga of the Setti Series)

Jeremy has loved and lost. Will he risk it again? Does he even have a choice?

I think Hannah just might have a say in this.

FALL FROM GRACE: Warped by centuries of darkness, the creature Sveigja plots to capture Clara as his queen. (Saga of the Setti Series)

Maybe if he can have Clara, Sveigja can walk with the light again.

How many will have to die before he has her. And will he have to drag her, kicking and screaming or will she want to be his Queen?

These authors couldn’t have chosen any better in these samples of their work. I want to read them all, and knowing me, I will!

Five Stars!! I loved them all.

I have two giveaways for you.

And now it’s time for my review of Eternal Island, Book One in The Eternal Series. This series is written by Ella Medler and Kristie S. Haigwood.

Eternal Island (Book 1 in the Eternal Series)

goodreads-badge-add-plus

Eternal Island – A place where vampires rule, witches play, danger lurks and dreams really do come true.

This arrogant, been there – done that, vampire thinks he’s seen it all and done it all. That is until he gazes into Rainey’s crystal ball.

She warned him, this is your one and only chance at love, at finding your soul-mate. Make sure you want this before you gaze upon her. There’ll be no going back. Your heart won’t allow it.

Abe doesn’t take her seriously. Rainey is his personal psychic witch. She’s been forecasting his future for a long time and never once has it been about anything good. So why should this be any different.

Then he gazes upon Ariana’s face. If his heart was still beating, it would explode from his chest. He’s stunned by the rush of feelings he’s having. He has to have her, can’t stand a second more without her. Now he understands Rainey’s warning. She’s right, there’s no going back.

Per Abe’s demand, Rainey goes to get Ariana and bring her back to the island.

Ariana has been in a coma for many weeks. Not able to cope with the news of her husband’s death, she fainted and never woke up.

She’s been moved to a mental hospital as she shows no signs of waking. Rainey arrives and uses her witchy powers to get past the staff and enters Ariana’s room. She sprinkles some powder on her face and waits.

Ariana awakens, at first confused. Where is she, why is she here and who is this stranger?

As Rainey pitches her mysterious promise of a new life, a new beginning on a magical island, Ariana is persuaded to go. Perhaps because of her painful memories, she accepts that the island is real.

I can tell you this, I had so much fun reading Eternal Island. The cast of characters couldn’t be better and I laughed, hard!

Abe is the High Vampire, the big kahuna of the island. A long time ago a vampire discovered the island and invited others to come there to escape the slayers. When witches were being burned, drowned, and hanged, the vampire invited them to the island also. It was mutually beneficial. The witches watched out for the vamps during the day and the vamps protected the witches by night. And the witches cast a spell to keep the island hidden.

This is a great premise. A secret island, witches and vamps working together!

Abe is a stickler for rules and suffers no nonsense. It’s hard for him to be so unsure of himself now that he’s found love. Upon knowing he’s about to come face to face with Ariana – “I love her and I’ve never even heard her voice. Do you know how that makes me feel? Vulnerable! I feel weak.”

I like when a vampire and a human fall in love. All through the story I’m wondering, will he want to change her, will she want to be changed? Keeps the mystery flowing.

Rainey is a psychic witch and has to make sure Abe doesn’t rush things and scare Ariana off. She needn’t have worried. Once Ariana gazes into Abe’s eyes, she’s enamored.

Her roommate Becky catches on quickly and thinks Ariana does protest too much.

“It’s not what you think, Becky. Honestly.” Becky made a face and stared back unblinking. “Okay, there’s no point in arguing with you anyway, is there?”

“Nope, I always win.”

A fact I liked: He enjoyed drinking alcohol for the simple reason that it was something different. A human doesn’t like to only eat pizza or cheeseburgers all the time and the same applied to Abe’s kind. Blood, although necessary to stay alive, got old, boring, after a while. His favorite drink was Jack Daniels, or an AB Negative girl.

Yikes! I’m AB Negative!

This part written about Abe made me crack up: Abe had been lying in bed for hours trying to count those damn sheep. Three hours later he decided to start shooting the sheep.

The book is full of fun, laugh out loud, moments. But there is also some yummy romance and a slew of characters, good and evil.

One vamp wants another one dead. The other vamp wants said vamp dead. Who will get who first?

Will Abe and Ariana finally be together?

Will Rainey see the mysterious Kade again?

Will Jonah stay out of trouble? Not likely!

There’s hi-jinx, romance and intrigue in Eternal Island. With so much going on, there’s never a dull moment.

If I was invited, I wouldn’t hesitate to visit! Five Stars for Eternal Island! I want more.

Now let’s hear from Ella and Kristie. They’re here to tell us how they met and how they became co-authors. Enjoy!

E: I’d been reading and reviewing indie books for a while, and in April last year I tripped over Kristie on twitter, or maybe facebook – one or the other. I offered to read and review Save My Soul for her. What a story! That book stood out head and shoulders above the rest. There were so many twists and turns, and Kristie has such a way to make you love her characters – I fell in love with pretty much every single one. Then I edited Forbidden Touch for her. Another winner. It’s so much easier to edit something you enjoy reading. And so our friendship blossomed. Kristie is such fun to talk to. I love her sense of humour.

K: Ella’s right, we met first on twitter, but with as broad as the twitterverse is, I didn’t realize we were already connected until Ella offered to review Save My Soul in one of the groups we are both members of on facebook. In turn, I read and reviewed her Martin Little, Resurrected (Loved it! Can’t wait for the sequel. She really has a way with humor and sarcasm, and those are two of my favorite tools I use in writing, as well). I was extremely surprised when I realized that the sequel wouldn’t be coming out for a while, that a thriller would be coming out first. WHAT? Okay, I’m not big on thrillers, but her first book was written so well, and she had edited and loved Forbidden Touch so much, that I had to give it a try. If I didn’t like it, I could just keep my mouth shut, right? Well, I couldn’t keep my mouth shut, because her voice in the novel made me look at thrillers in a whole new light. It got 5 stars from me, and I am anxious to get my hands on the next Hunter book. My, my, I am long-winded, what direction should I be taking this? Oh, right, Eternal Island. I wrote 3 of the epic Eternal novels two years before I even met Ella. They had been collecting dust, but they needed so much work to be publish worthy, that I stuck them on the back burner until I had a chance to get back to them, but with so many ideas for new novels crowding my head, I feared it would never happen. A thought came to me while driving one day, and I had to pull over so I could write her the email right then. I never even questioned it or thought that it wouldn’t work. I asked Ella to visit Eternal Island and see if she could work with me to make it any better. It is definitely a story that needs to be heard.

E: Yes, it was all Kristie’s idea. I was… well… surprised to say the least. I’d read good and bad things about co-authoring, but they all fizzled out of my mind simply because I felt so close to Kristie. I know we live thousands of miles apart, but in our hearts we feel as if we’ve lived our whole lives together, like sisters. Isn’t that right, Kristie?

K: Sisters? Yes, we are. If not by blood, then by souls. There wasn’t a doubt in my mind that we could make it work. 99.9% of the time our minds are on the same track and page. We… finish each other’s thoughts. “Why didn’t I think of that?” was said several times by the both of us.

E: I read the material as it was and loved it. I loved the idea of an island of the freaks, so to speak, a current-day kingdom with its own king and set of rules, and a down-to-earth approach to living in harmony with each other. Actually, a lot of so-called developed country governments would do well to read Eternal Island. That’s an idea. Shall we gift them some copies, Kristie?

K: That is the best idea I’ve ever heard, Ella. The planet would be so much better with the simple, yet strict, rules that the vampires set on Eternal Island. I would pack my bags and leave today if I could live there. It’s my dream escape, and I allow myself to visit every day.

E: I started working on Eternal Island, fitting it in amongst editing jobs, but then got interrupted by a holiday (I would have kept going but my family threatened to take away my laptop, and I wasn’t prepared to lose that!). I went back to work after my return and, helped by some delays in receiving some manuscripts for editing, got it finished at the beginning of September. Or so I thought. Kristie went back over it and made more changes, and then it came back to me, and back to Kristie – can’t remember quite how many goes we had to get it straight, but it was worth it. I don’t remember ever having so much fun playing with scenarios, thinking up smart retorts and working out which character should react which way. I firmly believe in strong, well-developed characters, and Kristie’s characterization is very good, so we had a good common point there.

K: I love my characters, even the secondary ones, so I made it a point to make them all as real as possible. Each of them have their quirks and problems, and each of them are unique in their own special way. I would say Jonah is my favorite to write, because he is so care-free and full of life. He loves being a vampire and he loves women and the chase to get them… all. lol. Which is your favorite, Ella? I think I might already know the answer, though. =D

E: I absolutely love Abe. He’s so clueless to start with. I can just visualize giving him a hug. And Jonah has got to be a close second. But… you know the last scene in the book? Get ready for some competition in the affection stakes. 😉

K: Oh, I know who you’re talking about. Lips are sealed. He is quite yummy, but I don’t want to spoil it for our readers. They must dig in and find out for themselves. 😉

E: I have to say there were a couple of scenes that stretched me. I only wrote satire and action thrillers before this one, and while there are a few action scenes in Eternal Island – and the pace is relentless, just as I like it (read it and you’ll see) – I never before had to get a… hmm… romantic scene right. Stop giggling, Kristie.

K: he he he he he Sorry. I can’t help it. You are so good at writing romance, I don’t know why you never tried it before. It all came natural to you. Flexible? I think so. You made the love scene, as well as all the other scenes better, and I don’t think I could have picked a better author to work with. You make magic happen. Mwah!

E: Stop that! You’re making me blush. There are a lot of awesome scenes in this story. Still, I think Eternal Immortality is going to be better. I feel it in my bones.

K: Right you are there, Ella. The cover says so much about the story, but still leaves the reader wondering what is beyond the door. Well, they will have to turn the pages to find out. Eternal Immortality ties up the loose ends of Eternal Island and lets other threads fray for Eternal Inception, book 3 of the Eternal series (Coming in the Fall, y’all!)

E: So, I guess what we’d like to say, in conclusion, is that if you feel it in your heart, if you’re comfortable with your on-line friends and have an awesome idea for a book, don’t let the miles get in the way. Writing a book together is easier than you think. If anything, it’s more fun, and there’s a better chance to keep each other going, no matter what else is going on in the world. I can’t wait to get back to work on the next book, and the next one, and the one after that, and so on.

K: Yep, you said it all! Thanks for having us, Laura. Sorry we didn’t let you talk much. We forget about the world around us when we get chatting. Thank you all so much for dropping in. I hope Eternal Island is a place you’d like to visit now. It’s a never ending story. It’s ETERNAL.

You ladies are awesome. I didn’t need to say a thing. Thanks you so much for stopping by.

About Ella Medler

Ella Medler

I live in Cornwall with my husband and our two teenage daughters. Together, we care for a large assortment of pets, some small enough to fit in a fish tank, and some capable of causing you significant injury on impact. I was born in Transylvania but got chucked out due to my inability to grow fangs and reluctance to sleep in coffins.

My first book, MARTIN LITTLE, RESURRECTED is a lighthearted fantasy novel full of action and unique takes on life. It’s total escapism. Heartened by positive reviews on my first book, I published BLOOD IS HEAVIER, an action thriller, which is an explosive and emotional struggle to save a father’s most treasured possession. ETERNAL ISLAND, a paranormal romance, is now live. I have co-written it with a brilliant American author, Kristie S. Haigwood. My next release is book two in the Hunter Series, BLOOD IS POWER, which should be out before the end of the year. In the pipeline are sequels for all of the above and a spin-off from Blood is Heavier – Tequila’s story.

Ever find it hard to talk about yourself? Yeah, I have that problem, too. I have been married to my soulmate for 8 years, who wouldn’t pick up a book unless promised that it was filled with pictures.  I have a beautiful 7 year old daughter, Riley, that talks too much and has a very vivid imagination. I have no clue where she got those traits. My step-son, Hayden, is 16 and very into football and hunting. I am a writer of paranormal suspense romance. If you enjoy a great love story with a massive amount of drama about angels, demons, ghosts, vampires, witches and fairy tale creatures brought to life through a twisted mind, then you might just enjoy reading my work.

Book Description:

When death is a new beginning and love an old curse.

Still recovering from her last tango with the afterlife, Louisiana-born Madison LeBon struggles not only with her life as an Oxford postgrad but also with her budding love for Rupert Vance, aristocrat extraordinaire. One thing is certain, though: she won’t run away from her powers anymore. From now on she’ll face the music …

… literally!

When a sixteenth-century ghost makes an appearance during a classical concert Madison attends and threatens her boyfriend’s family, she sets out to explore the dark mysteries of the Tudors, even if that means confronting their most royal and homicidal character.

Her plans take an unexpected turn when her voodoo heritage catches up with her. With horror, she understands what her fate was always meant to be.

The question now is: Can Rupert be part of it?

In addition to being an author, I work as an entrepreneur, wife and mother-of-one but spend a good deal of time with books, DVDs and listening to my mp3 player; all for the sake of inspiration, of course.
My debut series, The Oxford Trilogy, has been a blast to write because I can indulge in my favorite types of music: Country and English rock.
My main goal as a writer is to make readers dream bigger and cause their hearts to beat a little faster.
Since my writing is all about sharing dreams and stories, I love connecting with fellow readers and authors.

Zoe Grayson needs a change.

I recently entered a contest for these books at fundinmental and I won! Man, the pictures here do not begin to show how beautiful the cover art is in print. I can’t wait to read these.

Here’s what Sherry @ fundinmental has to say.

“This was definitely a different twist on a vampire (?), ghost (?) or madwoman (?) story. I got about halfway through and thought WT. Never saw that coming. Now I get it, or do I?

A psychological thriller that will keep you guessing. The minute you think you have the answer, you better think again.”

Check out Sherry’s full review of Lancaster House here.

The Sequel to Lancaster House

And here’s what Sherry has to say about The Middle Aisle.

“The ending left me stunned, I smiled as tears ran down my face. It was one of the best endings of any book I have read and left me with a warm, fuzzy feeling that lingered long after I had finished the book.”

Welcome to my stop on Emma Meade’s December Blog Tour. Today I’ll be revealing her beautiful cover, giving you a teaser excerpt, telling you my thoughts about The Awakening & Other Stories, and I’m hosting a giveaway!

The Awakening & Other Stories

by Emma Meade

Put on the kettle, close the curtains and curl up by the fire. Dive into 8 short tales, each with a slice of the paranormal.

Ghost Story

While walking her grandmother home, Jessica and her friend Michelle can’t help but notice the house. It’s supposed to be haunted. Stories are that you can see a shadow of a man in the bedroom window. The discussion turns to who he might be and why he lingers there.

On their way back, the two best friends decide to check out the old house and see if the stories are true. Jessica will learn something tonight. She ‘ll learn that ghosts are real and that maybe she was meant to enter the house on Rambles Lane.

I got a surprise with this  story. I didn’t have any idea where it was going and I love that! It’s not often that I don’t see what’s coming.

The Awakening

She remembers being ill. She remembers the mysterious dark man coming to see her. She remembers the blood.

She sleeps and when she sleeps she dreams. Now she wants to wake up. Why can’t she wake up. Wait, did she hear something? Is she waking up?

I really liked this one. The ending is one of those, Oh No! ones.

End of the Line

It’s midnight and Cassie stands on the train tracks waiting for death.  Here it comes. She will not jump out of the way, she won’t. Then she jumps.

Now she’ll have to come back tomorrow night and finish what she started, even if she has to use liquid courage to do so.

If she does meet death, will it be the end of the line?

I feel sorry for Cassie. She’s so sad, so lost. Failing the first time, I wonder if she really wants to die, or if she just needs a reason to go on living? This one stuck with me for some time.

Milsa Loris

The kingdom of Milsa Loris has just one night each year to come alive. The once majestic but now long abandoned home will host old friends tonight. They gather to pay their respects to an era that’s past.

The king’s witch, Noraleen, is brewing up something special for them. She just has to do this one thing and then she can finally rest.

Witchy good. I wouldn’t want to be invited to the party.

The Knocking

Alison tries to be patient with her grandfather. He’s old, losing his memory, and really tests her mettle. Tonight is no different from any other night.

Then there’s a knocking at the door. She opens it. No one’s there. Not long after, there’s more knocking. Again, there’s no one there.  The knocking is much more violent the third time, but again, no one is there.

What’s come knocking?

That’s what I asked myself. What’s at the door?

The Boy on the Beach

When Kate was a little girl her grandmother read the tea leaves for her but wouldn’t tell her what she saw. As the years passed and Kate grew into her teens, her grandmother still wouldn’t tell her. Then she passed away and Kate thought she’d never know what the tea leaves said.

When she finally finds out what they said, she’s just confused. Her grandmothers warning from the grave gives her the shivers.

B-E  C-A-R-E-F-U-L  D-A-R-K  B-O-Y  W-A-N-T-S  Y-O-U

“He will have the strangest green eyes you’ve ever seen… He will use trickery if needs be.”

This is one of my favorites. Kate tried to heed her grandmother’s warning.

Snowglobes

Two young lovers arrive at Calvin’s Cabins for the Christmas holidays. They’re here to try to mend their failing relationship.

Will they be able to get back what they once had?

Maybe Calvin could help them.

This is another favorite for me. It’s magical.

The Old Vampire

Hailey’s dreams aren’t about a knight in shining armor riding up on his white steed to rescue her. Her knight is a vampire, or maybe a demon or ghost. Any of these would do.

She’s longed for the supernatural world her whole life. Is she really destined to a hum-drum existence or is there something more for her.

She dreams and she waits. And she waits. And waits. Will she ever meet her knight?

This is a good old horror story. Horror just the way I like it.

Emma sprinkled some razzle dazzle on these pages and zinged me but good. I love short stories and in her book, you get a smorgasbord of paranormal and horror.  I didn’t meet a story I didn’t like.

Five snowglobes for The Awakening & Other Stories

Excerpt from “End of the Line”

In the distance, the familiar, white light appeared, cutting through the dark of midnight. She’d watched it come before, but always from the sidelines, imagining what it would be like to face such a beast.

Cassie drew in a shaky breath and steeled herself. Legs splayed, arms by her sides, fists tightly clenched, she waited on the tracks as the train approached. Her legs shook, and strands of hair licked her cheeks in the gentle night’s breeze.

She swallowed the fear threatening to override her. Hang in there, she told herself. Another sixty seconds, and it will all be over. No more drowning, murky thoughts, heavy dreams or stilted breathing. She lifted her head and stared straight ahead, willing her body to freeze.

Closer now, but not coming fast enough. She was scared. As much as she desired to have it all over with, the fear gained ground. Could the driver see her yet? No, still too far away. Why had time slowed down? An ache began in her ankles, spreading up her legs and winding its way around her thighs and into her clenched hands.

The feel of her fingernails scraping the soft flesh of her palms roused her, just as she became aware of the vibrations on the tracks.

Cassie stumbled into the grass growing beside the tracks and ran, tears running down her cheeks. She stopped as she reached the first line of trees and leaned over, resting her hands on her thighs, trying to get her breath back.

Damn it! She wanted to die. Why couldn’t she have stuck it out?

The train thundered by, unaware of the woman hunched over in the darkness, sobbing. She raised her head to watch the carriages pass, slithering alongside Wilkins Woods like a dark snake. In thirty seconds, the night was once again silent.

She’d try tomorrow night. Maybe pick up a bottle of Jack Daniel’s after work. Might help with the nerves.

Slowly, her breathing returned to normal, and she wiped the tears away. Cassie followed the edge of the woods the mile back to her squalid flat. She let herself in and headed straight to bed. One more day. She could make it that far.

Smashwords

I really do like to be scared. I have always loved books that make me jump at every little noise.  I have read so many books and watched so many movies, that it takes something to really scare me.

When Diane Wing asked me if I would be interested in reading and reviewing her collection of scary stories, I was all for it. Nothing like a good fright to get those endorphins pumping!

Thorne Manor: And Other Bizarre Tales

Diane is being very generous. She has one paperback copy of her book to giveaway on my blog! AND she has agreed to an interview! Just keep reading:)

My thoughts and ramblins

Thorne Manor is the longer story in this collection.

Heather has finally found the strength to leave her abusive husband and start out on her own. She has always wanted to run her own business, and when the house of her dreams seems to call out to her, she ignores her friend’s advice and buys it. Thorne Manor has been empty for five years. It’s dark history has many people believing its haunted. That doesn’t worry Heather. The mansion, with its three levels will be perfect.

The house needs some TLC but no major reconstruction. While the workers are doing the repairs and adding the cosmetic touches, Heather sets out to get some tenants to rent the available rooms. Her plan is to make Thorne Manor a place of psychic entertainment and she needs to find various occult practitioners to provide  services to the clients. Kind of like a psychic smorgasbord.

There is one major problem with the old manor. It comes with some very unwelcoming inhabitants. Gypsy, a trance medium, suggests a good cleansing ritual. It’s going to take more than that. Heather needs to clean house of these nasty spirits  before her tenants move in. It proves much more difficult and dangerous than she thought.

My thoughts

This was a really creepy haunting. Diane knows how to create an atmosphere that makes the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. I was almost looking over my shoulder while reading it. With a limited amount of words, she got me engaged with the characters. I felt protective  and proud of Heather, and her psychic friends were my kind of people. Someone I would want on my side when things got bad.

Don’t get too comfortable. This story moves fast and the scares are many and intense.

By Invitation Only

Loretta is lost without Toby. He was her constant companion for 15 years.

Five years have passed and  her grief is just as heavy.  She really should move somewhere so she isn’t constantly reminded of Toby, her silken haired dog, but she fears losing the good memories.

Something strange starts to happen. There is something in the wall of her bedroom. Something trying to get out, chipping away at the plaster.

My thoughts

I would have moved. If something was pushing, trying to get out of the wall, slowly making a bigger and bigger hole, I would be so out of there. Curiosity killed the cat, people!!

This was an eerie tale, making me edgy and fearful of what was going to come out of that wall!

Dream State

Judith has a problem. A big one. There are living things in her mouth. Worms! Then she wakes up. It was only a dream. Or was it?

My thoughts

The title of this book says …and other bizarre tales. Well, this one is very bizarre. It is also kind of gross, which makes the creep factor high. For some reason, maybe I’m bizarre, I liked that.

Good Riddance

That’s it! Justin has had it with the mangy cat that keeps sneaking up onto his porch, covering his expensive furniture with its hair. The hair was everywhere. Finding out where it lived proved impossible and it just kept coming back, night after night. Something would have to be done.

This went on for months and Justin began to fantasize a gruesome ending for the nasty feline. He should have been more careful what he imagined.

My thoughts

This was a goodie!  What Justin conjured up in his imagination is unspeakable and the ending was not what I expected to happen.

Guardian of the Gate

Anzuth makes the long, grueling climb from the bowels of Hell to Earth’s surface, but he is not where he expected to be.  Spotting a beauty salon that’s still open, he decides to get cleaned up there, knock the stink off of him.

He gets a makeover straight out of The Twilight Zone!

My thoughts

Loved this. It was so different. I don’t know where Diane found this idea, definitely from left field. I think we need more beauticians like the one you meet in this story.

The Black Sheep

Amy can’t explain it. It’s a mystery to her. Why is she so drawn to The Black Sheep. It’s just a restaurant, isn’t it?  Given, its outside is coated in red paint and there is a skull of a ram, complete with horns, displayed in the window, so maybe that’s where her sense of foreboding comes from.

She seems unable to stay away from the building, despite repeated warnings from her guardian spirit to stay clear. Each time she passes the building, the pull to enter is stronger.

My thoughts

I would have never entered that building. If something made me uneasy, I would avoid it, not seek it out. I don’t know, maybe she was meant to enter.

The Quiet Neighbors

Ever since Henry lost his job, it seems all Emma does is clean up after him. He stays glued to his chair, stuffing his face with Cheese Doodles, chasing them down with sweet tea, and watching endless TV. She longs for the future that should have been theirs. Not this.

Then she finds this book, Manual of Retribution – A Guidebook for the Oppressed. What she finds in it just might be able to make her life better.

My thoughts

Good for Emma. No one should have to put up with a loser like Henry. I don’t know if I could have done what she did, but since it’s a story, I say go Emma.

My overall review

Excellent writing. Diane quickly lays out the plots and gets right to the heart of each story. There is something for everyone here. Each story has its own atmosphere or flavor.  She makes you connect with the characters. I was surprised at which characters I was drawn to. I felt a slight nudge towards them by the author. I got everything I hoped for out of this collection, and more.

     Very Scary Good!

A special treat today! Diane is here to answer a few questions.

Welcome Diane. Thanks for agreeing to answer a few questions. It gives us a chance to get to know you.

 1) Most of my readers know I love to read and review short stories and collections. I find them very challenging to review without giving too much away. Can you explain your writing process when doing short stories?

I start with a scenario and let it run from there.  I get into a zone where I am experiencing the story as it unfolds and love to see where it takes me.

2) Where do your ideas come from?

Inspiration comes from many places and can happen at any time.  I carry a notebook with me, for the idea can strike while having dinner with friends, walking in the woods, or looking at an object, person, or situation and asking myself what if?  People-watching can trigger all sorts of ideas.

3) What do you think makes for a good story?

Atmosphere, intriguing characters, and the strange and unusual introducing itself into daily life.  Having an out-of-the-ordinary component that brings about a mental or emotional reaction is important to keep my attention.

4) Do you have a favorite story in this collection, or perhaps a favorite scene?

Guardian of the Gate is the one I had the most fun writing. It’s hard to say more about that without giving away the plot.

5) Did you draw on anything from your own life when writing Thorne Manor… and other bizarre tales?

I think every writer draws a piece of themselves into their writing.  Even in fictional works, a writer’s underlying philosophy is exposed, albeit taken to the extreme within the storyline.  By Invitation Only was written while grieving the loss of my own beloved pet.  Thorne Manor incorporated experiences from a controlling relationship and an actual business idea I had.  A house that was in severe disrepair where I live sparked the idea for The Quiet Neighbors.

6) What is your favorite thing you like to do when not writing or working?

I like walking in the woods and going to concerts – a wide variety from classical music to classic rock.  They are such opposite types of activities – one peaceful with few people for contemplation and rejuvenation and the other loud and crowded, to stimulate new ideas.  Each of these activities serve to move thought in new directions – one internally and one externally.

7) Are you writing something now, and if so, can you tell us something about it?

Right now I’m working on The True Nature of Energy: Secrets of Energetic Consciousness.  It is an exploration of the energetic dynamics between the physical and the divine and ways to interpret the energies we are exposed to, as well as the energies we create ourselves.  By increasing energetic awareness, it increases the ability to see things objectively, reduces drama, and enhances personal growth.  My vibrational scale and associated quiz are included, so readers can determine their energy level and find ways to raise their vibrational level.  Target date for release is early 2013.

The other manuscripts I’m working on include five new short stories, a book of tarot combinations, and Coven II (sequel to Coven: The Scrolls of the Four Winds).

Now for Five Fun Shorts!

1) What psychic power would you wish for?  To hear the thoughts of all living things

 2) What is your favorite animal?  Hawk in the wild; dog in the house
 3) Have you ever had a supernatural encounter?  Many!
 4) What is the scariest book you’ve read?  The Shining and Salem’s Lot by Stephen King
 5) What is the scariest movie you’ve seen?  I’m still looking for the movie that is the scariest.  There is a 15-second scene in Exorcist III that creeps me out and stays with me.
I really enjoyed this opportunity to get to know you Diane. Thanks so much for everything!
