My Review

I tell you what. After reading this story about a family that could win The Most Dysfunctional Award, I don’t think either of these twin sisters could be tagged Mummy’s Little Angel.

What a tangled, ugly mess these girls are. And the mother isn’t much better. She’s popping pills left and right, and doing everything she can to avoid facing the big truth. One or both of her daughter’s is a psychopathic killer.

You get the story from three POVs. That of each sister, Annie and Maggie, and the mother, Joanne. It wasn’t hard to keep track of who was speaking as the author highlights each one in bold print. Otherwise, I think it would be hard to distinguish between them as all three are a mess.

This one really had me cranked up. If this were a movie, I’d be saying, “Come on mom, can’t you see they’re manipulating you?” By the end, I didn’t care who did what to who, I just wanted whoever deserved to pay for what they did, to pay.

Looking for something twisted? For character’s that have more baggage than an airport terminal? And enough suspense and mystery to keep your head spinning? Give this a go. It’ll mess with your head.

Mummy’s Little Angel is the first place winner of World’s Best Story!

Synopsis

Joanne didn’t believe that her life could become worse than it already was. She had lost everybody and everything she had loved. She was alone. Surely she had suffered enough? The press had called her identical twins psychopaths. Her Maggie. Her Annie. But she still loved them, even though one of them had killed her husband, Jeff. Joanne believed that his murder had been an accident. How could one of her girls be a murderer? She knew them better than anybody else. They were good girls really.

She just had to prove it.

The brutal murder of her god-daughter Laura had never been solved. Items were missing when Laura’s remains had been discovered: clues that could lead to the capture of her killer. One of them was Laura’s doll … the doll that Joanne later discovered in her home. Joanne is facing the most horrific dilemma of her life. Has the wrong woman been imprisoned? Could her child have used such brutality against her best friend? Or could both women be innocent after all?

She needs to find somebody for her daughter to confide in; somebody she will trust. She needs a miracle. There is only one person who can help. He is compassionate and caring, with an amazing ability to gain the trust of the most difficult patients. He is Joanne’s only hope. He is Jonathan Davies.

Forensic Instincts #5

My Review

A woman’s kind- hearted actions leaves her dead, gunned down in the street, and another woman on the run, hiding a dangerous secret.

Lisa couldn’t believe her luck when Julie helped her get a job and gave her a place to stay until she got back on her feet. Growing up in foster care, with a juvenile record, Lisa wasn’t having much luck until Julie gave her chance. Everything falls apart when Lisa sees Julie executed in the street.

Now, it’s a race to stay ahead of some powerful people, bent on silencing Lisa forever.

I’m always pulling for the underdog and I felt bad for Lisa. All she wanted was to be able to make it in a hostile world. Wouldn’t you know it, the world kept knocking her down. Being a foster kid, bounced from home to home, you’d expect her to be tough. But how could she be prepared for the evil dogging her steps.

Along comes her rescue. FI, Forensic Instincts, a team of people that help those who can’t help themselves. The eclectic group, each with their own quirky abilities, take Lisa in and protect her while they dig into her case.

I had a lot of fun meeting the team from FI. I couldn’t help but picture characters from CSI, Criminal Minds, and NCIS. All favorite shows of mine. Each team member had their own unique instincts and training, and there’s even a little bit of a  paranormal element with one of them.

Being big on character driven stories, I was thrilled to have so many to connect with. Some were endearing, some were the strong leader types. You had your techno geek, the newbie wanting to show their stuff, and the joker, the one who eased the suspense with their oddball humor and antics.

And there were some cool gadgets too. Bee and Hooter were really amazing. And Yoda would be good to have around all the time.

The plot bounced me from city to city as the death toll rose and the villains closed in. Suspense built, fear for the characters made me anxious, and I pushed through the night to finish the book and find out what happened.

The last chapter had me riveted. I could clearly see the final showdown in my mind. Smiled as the team went to work. Let’s here it for the good guys.

I love a well executed and powerful wrap up.

Synopsis

Given the opportunity, would you assume someone else’s identity and leave your old life behind? A serendipitous crossing of paths between Lisa Barnes, a down-on-her-luck job seeker, and Julie Forman, a personal trainer to an Olympic hopeful, forever changes the course of both women’s lives. One winds up dead and the other finds herself a fugitive, hiding behind one lie after another as a cold-blooded killer methodically hunts her. Desperately trying to stay alive, the terrified woman enlists the help of Forensic Instincts, a rogue investigative team that clandestinely operates in the gray area between legal and illegal. Safeguarding their client’s deception, Forensic Instincts digs into dangerous territory as they try to find out who’s after their client and why. Meanwhile, bodies are piling up in Chicago, New Jersey, and Vermont as a megalomaniacal genius will stop at nothing to eradicate anyone who threatens the success of his medical breakthrough. With an unhinged client and a monstrous criminal enterprise as its adversary, Forensic Instincts is forced into uncharted territory to protect their client and save one of their own from becoming the next corpse. Forensic Instincts is an unorthodox, criminal investigative team that carefully navigates the fine line between legal and illegal. The team consists of a behaviorist, a former Navy SEAL, a techo-wiz, an intuitive, a pickpocket, a retired FBI agent, and a human scent evidence dog.”

Has she already fallen prey to the vicious stranger hunting her?

Publication Date: Jan 26, 2016
Genre: Psychological Thriller/Crime Fiction

Life turns from barely tolerable to complete hell when Maddy Eastin’s impulsive plan to win back the attention of her absentee father backfires. Word of her scheme spreads through her high school, but when mockery escalates to cyberbullying, Maddy and her failed stunt become headline news. But the worst is yet to come…

A disturbed man is fighting the overwhelming urge to surrender to his true nature—a moral code molded by a sadistic father who taught him that a girl needs proper training to become the perfect subservient woman. As he watches Maddy on the evening news, his already fractured psyche completely splinters. She’s the girl he’s been waiting for.

When Maddy disappears, she’s labeled a runaway even though her mother believes it was foul play. Will the two detectives investigating Maddy’s disappearance find her before it’s too late? Or has she already fallen prey to the vicious stranger hunting her?

This psychological thriller unfolds through the viewpoints of five deeply flawed characters. Each is on their own emotionally charged journey that ultimately intersects in a collision course of devastating consequences.

Lily unlocked the craft store’s two front doors, then stood aside to allow a couple of impatient women to enter.

Gotta get your early morning scrapbooking fix, don’t you, ladies?

She forced the biting retort to stay firmly in her mind. Outwardly, she smiled, greeting the women, who were already racing down the center aisle.

When did I become so bitter?

Lily had always thought of herself as a pleasant person, the type to consider another person’s feelings over her own. She believed she was the sort of friend others wanted in their corner. One who would roll up her sleeves and jump in during the tough times. So how was it that she could deal with other people’s problems so well, yet completely fall apart during the rough patches in her own life?

It seemed to her that having single-mom status thrust upon her had been the tipping point. She didn’t know how other women did it. There was no time to grieve over a spouse walking out when every waking moment was either spent trying to earn enough income to keep their whole house of cards from crashing down or being an emotional cheerleader for Maddy in order to get her through.

When Tom had still been part of the family, at least there had been someone else to pass the baton to once in a while. He may have travelled a lot with his job, but whenever he was home, he and Maddy were always together. Those were the times Lily could take a break. Take time for herself, to recharge and in turn have something to offer back to her family. Lily had been running on empty for so long now, she had nothing left to give.

At least I don’t have to listen to someone constantly belittle me anymore.

She was glad for that, but still felt sad when she thought about no longer having a man in her life who loved her. She didn’t know which was worse—Tom’s stinging verbal attacks or being alone.

What would happen if I just sat in the middle of this store and refused to move?

Lily cracked a smile as she pictured herself plopping down on the floor in full tantrum mode.

Maddy got to do it, why can’t I?

Synopsis

Cécile, a stylish forty-seven-year-old, has spent the weekend visiting her parents in a provincial town southeast of Paris. By early Monday morning, she’s exhausted. These trips back home are always stressful and she settles into a train compartment with an empty seat beside her. But it’s soon occupied by a man she instantly recognizes: Philippe Leduc, with whom she had a passionate affair that ended in her brutal humiliation thirty years ago. In the fraught hour and a half that ensues, their express train hurtles towards the French capital. Cécile and Philippe undertake their own face to face journey—In silence? What could they possibly say to one another?—with the reader gaining entrée to the most private of thoughts. This is a psychological thriller about past romance, with all its pain and promise.

“I don’t remember my childhood.”

“What is it ’bout your childhood you forgot?”

“Everything. I don’t have any memories at all of growing up. Didn’t you know that?”

She got a far-away look in her eyes and then recognition dawned.

“Your mind went plum blank, didn’t it? I remember now. You was so tore up after…” She stopped and bowed her head a moment. When she continued, her deep voice was so soft I had trouble hearing her. “…the accident. You got the forgets, didn’t you?”

The forgets. Yeah, that’s right. I got the forgets.

“I didn’t just forget the accident. I forgot everything.”

She looked up, startled.

Synopsis

What really happened to Laughs in the Wind?

When Anne Mitchell was 11 years old, something happened to her that erased the whole first decade of her life.

Twenty-five years later, she has come home to re-claim her past.

Oh, she gets it. She understands that something profoundly evil lurks in the swirling purple haze of her amnesia. Fear of facing that secret held her hostage. Like a schoolyard bully, it twisted her arm behind her back and forced her to accept that her life began in the dirt beside the ditch where the family station wagon burned like hell had opened up a crack in the world right there in the back seat.

For 25 years, she was enslaved by what she called the “Boogie Man”– images from her lost childhood that appeared in the shadows behind her reflection in mirrors and wine glasses, haunted her dreams and attacked her in screaming night terrors.

Then the monster shattered her career.

And Anne saw him in her dying mother’s eyes.

With her last breath, Susan Mitchell begged for her daughter’s forgiveness. She didn’t mean for it to happen, she gasped, but she’ll burn in hell for what she did all the same.

What did her mother do? Anne has to know.

So she has come home to a small Texas prairie town to live with her crazy grandmother in the rambling old house where she grew up to take her stand against the Boogie Man. But Anne isn’t really prepared for how expensive remembering might be. The cost of her memories could very well be her sanity.

Each new revelation loosens Anne’s grip on reality.

Surely her crazy grandmother didn’t do THAT to Anne’s beloved parakeet! Yes, the old woman DID! No … actually, she didn’t.

The horror that attacks her in the garage–it can’t possibly be real…can it?

And most important: what happened to the little girl with a face like a china doll whose name was Laughs in the Wind?

The Boogie Man knows.

He also knows Anne’s here. He knows it’s showtime. And he knows what she doesn’t–that Anne might very well have to pay for her past with her future, that the cost of remembering could be her life.

My Review

This book was so unique, I made up my own category – psychological twister. It’s seldom that I can state I’ve never read anything quite like this, but in this instance, I can.

Jonathon is a Taker. His job is to listen to his clients, take their pain, their grief. He can’t speak to them or show empathy of any kind. I mentioned grief and I’m sure you were thinking one thing and I was talking another. The grief is more like whining and griping than about sorrow. In fact, an older woman came to see Jonathon, and when she starts talking about her recently deceased husband, he asks her to leave, stating he can’t take her grief, it’s old-style grief, not modern. Against company policy.

As you can imagine, the clients aren’t all that pleasant and it’s probably a good thing Jonathon can’t say what he’s thinking. The author wrote Jonathan’s point of view every other chapter,  and the chapters in between being his clients. It made for interesting and disturbing reading.

About the time I was thinking how could anyone do this, Jonathon begins to unravel. A new client, so unlike his others, a shining beacon in all the bitterness, has him wanting something different. Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined what he did though.

There were some lighter parts. They actually have these Rage Room Boxes on the streets. You stick your head in and scream all of your anger and rage and nobody can hear you. These might come in handy in any city.

And the neighbor who is always trying to download her grief for free. He has to be on his toes, or she’ll give it to him.

The dialogue is fascinating. Even though Jonathon’s side of the conversation is only in his head, you’ll find yourself agreeing with him, nodding your own head, and thinking some of the same nasty thoughts.

I need to mention there’s sex and language in this book. It’s for adult readers. It’s in your face, nothing subtle about it. If you don’t mind that, you should definitely give this book a go. It’s strange, twisted, and darkly comedic. Never a dull moment.

Synopsis

Jonathon is a Taker, some type of modern day psych in the growing industry of modern grief. Takers treat people for all that ails them just by listening. In session, a Taker doesn’t speak. A Taker doesn’t move. A Taker doesn’t even blink. They take till their patients have got no more negativity to give.

A chance meeting throws a new patient into Jonathon’s life. A girl whose carefree lightness of being is in complete contrast to the average patient. She makes Jonathon realise he can no longer refuse to deal with how his job makes him sick, nor his own destructive vice.

Murder is his only way out, an action that leads him towards his own death and beyond. It is a path he hopes will lead him to his freedom.

Praise for The Freeing of Jonathan Mark:

“Small book but great story!  It’s more and more rare to find a book like this one.”– dvdchrono, Amazon Reviewer

“Loved this book, can’t wait for the next one!  I had not heard of this author but I do not think it will be long before the world has heard of him. Do yourself a favour and buy this book, you will not be disappointed.  I judge a book on its ‘cannot put down factor’. I found myself quickly intrigued and fully immersed in the book and could not put it down.  It is really well written and does not follow other writers safe templates.  Hurry up and release your second book ! I am glad I jumped on the Nathan Gross bandwagon from the beginning. I suggest others follow suit.”– Ben Mitchell, Amazon Reviewer

“With the publication of his first novel, The Freeing of Jonathon Mark, Nathan Gross has announced to the literary world that he has arrived and demands attention. This book is a psychological thriller that compels the reader to keep reading. The almost dystopian world it portrays is both disturbing and fascinating, and displays Gross’ novel viewpoint of where society is headed. We become partners in Jonathon Mark’s nightmarish journey into the depths of despair and hope for some form of redemption for him, although that seems unlikely. The book is a little too long, but it is a wonderful achievement for a first-time novelist. I look forward to his next book to see where his fertile imagination has led him, and to follow his further maturation as a writer.”- Morry Frenkel, Amazon Reviewer

*****

About Nathan Gross:Nathan Gross

Nathan is passionately obsessed with scratching the itch that is his absolute need to write. Whether it be in the form of novels or short stories, film / video scenarios, scripts or songs: writing keeps the demons at bay.

Nathan draws on and interprets the events that transpire around him, transforming minute observations and a distant, large view of the world into prose. He expresses at once his hopes and despairs, and equally his surprise and complete comprehension of events before, or as they unfold, if not always as everyone else sees them.

If his book ‘The Freeing of Jonathon Mark’ is part of his journey as a writer, then perhaps it traces his experiences chasing the plastic happiness of consumerist dreams. Perhaps it is also a study of how he opted out of these pursuits for a fresh start, in order to forge a new life where he can be free from empty conformity; to discover and further himself in the journey that is his life. New beginnings bring new ideas to draw upon and it goes without saying that we will find these thinkings in his subsequent writings.

His other published works include Ginger the Carrot, the first in a series of picture books for adults entitled Rotten Veggies, and the song and music video Tais Toi for the musician Monsieur Grandin. He is also the director and scenarist for a number of award winning short films. A collection of his works both written and visual are to be discovered at zamsteepa.com.

Born and raised in Melbourne, Australia, Nathan now resides in the south of France.

His short story ‘Grampy Joe’ won third prize in the Odyssey House Victoria 2012 short story competition.  You can read ‘Grampy Joe’ here.

I remember the way I felt after reading my first psychological thriller.

I had to go out and get all of the books the author wrote.

I read them like there was no tomorrow.

Lately, I’ve strayed away from them. But this book is drawing me back in.

I have so much to reveal today.

Check out Dead Dreams, watch the music and book trailers, see the dream cast, and enter the giveaway!

Dead Dreams by Emma Right

Eighteen-year-old Brie O’Mara has so much going for her: a loving family in the sidelines, an heiress for a roommate, and dreams that might just come true. Big dreams–of going to acting school, finishing college and making a name for herself.
She is about to be the envy of everyone she knew. What more could she hope for? Except her dreams are about to lead her down the road to nightmares. Nightmares that could turn into a deadly reality.
Dead Dreams, Book 1, a young adult psychological thriller and
contemporary mystery.

Enjoy this glimpse inside!

The first night the burglar broke into our home, I was wiped out and zonked out of my skull. Susan Summers at Stay Fit had called in sick last-minute, and I’d had to add two hours to my unearthly morning shift, after which I couldn’t even grab lunch before I had scoot to Starbucks, driving like a mad duck in my Mini Cooper. Friday afternoon was an especially busy time for Starbucks. Forget about time to down a latte or two to keep my eyelids from drooping.
Brie, wake up,” Sarah whispered as she shook my arm vigorously.
Who is she afraid of waking with all that whispering?
I was the only one in the bedroom. I glanced at my bedside clock. The green light of the digital claimed it was three ten. Or, I should say, already three ten, since I always dragged myself out of bed at four thirty to brace myself for Stay Fit.
Then, even in the dimness, I noticed her eyes were glistening. “What’s wrong?” Was she ill after all?
Shhh! They could still be here.” “They? Who?” “Shhh! Them, they, he….” She broke off, sobbing.
I turned on the bedside lamp, and she struggled, intending to stop me. I jerked back when I saw her face. Blood dripped from one side of her head.
My God! Sarah!” I exclaimed, even though I wasn’t the believing-in-God type. My parents were to be blamed for my aversion to God. Too many inconsistencies and unanswered questions. “What happened?”
Her eyes welled up with tears, wild, looking about like a frightened deer.
They’re—he’s after me. He’s going to kill me.”
Who?”I jumped to my feet and rushed to the door. Thank goodness she’d shut it. I placed my ear to the doorjamb and listened. Were the burglars still outside? Sarah sobbed uncontrollably. Too loudly.“Shh! Sarah, are they still here?” I shook her in a vain attempt to keep her calm.
Just one man. I don’t know. I rammed the door into his face when he dragged me by the hair.” She rubbed at a spot on her head. “I think he left, maybe.”
We have to call the cops.”
No, no, please. You can’t.” She pulled my arm when I reached for my yellow duffel by the foot of my bed, where my cell phone lay.
We mustn’t. You don’t get it. Todd!” She said under her breath.
Todd? This was no ordinary sibling rivalry. This was beyond me. Sarah was hiding something.

My Review Reposted
*
*
Actions have consequences.
You’ve heard of the ripple effect. A pebble tossed in the water creates ripples, which grow, expanding outward.
Jillian is the pebble, and her affair with a married man is the first ripple.
What happens after are the expanding ripples.
.
I didn’t expect to like  Jillian so much.
She’s messing with a married man, and no matter what lies of his she chooses to believe, it’s a big no-no in my book.
Powerful writing drew me to Jillian. I wanted more for her. I wanted her to be happy and free.
As she gets tangled in a web of lies and infidelity, I became more and more fearful. Her obsession with her lover grows and takes a bizarre turn.
.
If only Jillian and her roommate hadn’t been mugged.
If only  Calvin Kyle hadn’t been the responding police officer.
If only he hadn’t been so attractive.
If only they hadn’t started their affair.
A lot of if onlys.
.
bloody hands photo: 110 Bloody-Hands.jpg
There are so many people affected by this affair. So many victims.
I guess you could call them collateral damage.
Jillians act of desperation plows through several families, leaving bodies in her wake.
.
I almost didn’t want to continue reading. I just knew this wasn’t going to be pretty, but I had to know what happened.
Boy, was I right.
This short story had me sweating blood! It was relentless.
.
Blood in the Past is only 8 chapters, but by the time you finish reading, it will feel like a lot more.
.
The writing is bold, making this cast of dysfunctional and flawed characters come to life in the pages.
.
As Blood in the Past is the prelude novella to the Blood for Blood Series, I can hardly wait to see what the author has cooked up for her other stories.
.
Such strong writing, if I didn’t already know, I never would have guessed this was the authors debut novel.
.
5 Stars

My Tease:

They came for me again last night.

As before, they quietly surrounded my bed, not saying a word. As before, I lay frozen in place, staring wide-eyed at their scorched and headless bodies. And as before, he leaned in close and whispered into my ear, “Actually, you and I are the same.”

My name is Fang Mu. Two years ago, something terrible happened, and I was the only survivor.

How about you? Got a tease? Tell me!
