What Adam Wants

by Michael Hebler

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

Mr. Hebler has done it again. He’s given us another short horror story that feels like a long one. I’m always amazed at how well he can plop me right into a story at the beginning, just like the opening scene in a movie.

Welcome to dysfunction junction. Rachel and David recently lost their baby, Adam.  It’s the beginning of a downward spiral for their marriage and a descent into hell.

All of their dreams are shattered and so is the silence. Rachel hears Adam crying and soon David does too. Adam’s cries get more persistent. Rachel must figure out what Adam wants.

There’s not much time to feel sympathy for these two. Shock gives way to grief, then numbness, then anger. You can imagine how they direct that anger. It’s not pretty.

And then there’s Adam. You know how ear piercing a baby’s cries are. Imagine them getting louder and louder until it feels like your head will explode.

The ending is a kick in the pants when you find out what Adam wants.

Losing a child at birth is difficult, but not as difficult as when that child refuses to leave.

Days after Rachel and David lose their child, they are haunted by the incessant cries of a baby. It is their stillborn, Adam, and he wants something from Rachel… something deadly.

Michael Hebler

Prior to becoming an award-winning author of his dark fiction Chupacabra Series, Michael was a full-time international film publicist who had worked on multiple titles for Walt Disney, Pixar, Lionsgate, Lakeshore Entertainment, Warner Bros., Summit Entertainment, and the 2013 Academy Award-winning Best Foreign Language Film, “La grande bellezza” (The Great Beauty).

Born in the early 1970’s in Los Angeles County to a salesman and homemaker, Michael dreamed of following his passions for entertainment and storytelling by acting. Welcome to My Monday Minis Reviews where I share short reviews of books I’ve read. For today I’ll be sharing my reviews of three books from my TBR shelves.

Descent

by Tim Johnston

Genre: Thriller/Mystery

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

It was supposed to be a fun family vacation. The last one before Caitlin went off to college. Her parents are also hoping it will give them time to reflect and maybe repair their failing marriage.

When Cailtlin’s younger brother, Sean, is hurt while he and Caitlin are on an early morning run in the hills, a stranger stops his vehicle and offers to take Caitlin to get help. Torn between knowing better and doubting herself, Caitlin makes a choice that echoes through the family, setting them all on different paths.

I’ve often wondered why people do what they do. Caitlin knew better than to go with a stranger. But think about it. What would you do? Your little brother is seriously injured. You need to get help for him fast. There’s someone offering to take you. She could have been thinking, it won’t happen to me. Everything will be fine. Or, what else can I do? So many things must have gone through her mind in a flash. Then, to know she made the wrong choice.

This is much more than just a story about an abduction. It’s a families journey. The brother is overcome by guilt. If he hadn’t got hurt, Caitlin would be okay. The parents are torn over letting the kids go off by themselves. Didn’t they stress to the kids enough about the dangers out there.

As time passed and doubt and guilt wormed their way through this fractured family, they all changed. They all coped with it differently. And the author takes you inside their heads and hearts. Helps you see the hows and whys of each characters actions.

Powerful, disturbing, suspenseful, emotional. All are just words to help describe this story. You need to read it and experience what these characters go through. I was asking myself questions long after I finished this book.

Synopsis

The Rocky Mountains have cast their spell over the Courtlands, a young family from the plains taking a last summer vacation before their daughter begins college. For eighteen-year-old Caitlin, the mountains loom as the ultimate test of her runner’s heart, while her parents hope that so much beauty, so much grandeur, will somehow repair a damaged marriage. But when Caitlin and her younger brother, Sean, go out for an early morning run and only Sean returns, the mountains become as terrifying as they are majestic, as suddenly this family find themselves living the kind of nightmare they’ve only read about in headlines or seen on TV.

As their world comes undone, the Courtlands are drawn into a vortex of dread and recrimination. Why weren’t they more careful? What has happened to their daughter? Is she alive? Will they ever know? Caitlin’s disappearance, all the more devastating for its mystery, is the beginning of the family’s harrowing journey down increasingly divergent and solitary paths until all that continues to bind them together are the questions they can never bring themselves to ask: At what point does a family stop searching? At what point will a girl stop fighting for her life?

Written with a precision that captures every emotion, every moment of fear, as each member of the family searches for answers, Descent is a perfectly crafted thriller that races like an avalanche toward its heart-pounding conclusion, and heralds the arrival of a master storyteller.

Forest Of Memory

by Mary Robinette Kowal

Genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

In an unspecified future where everyone is connected, Katya, a dealer in Authenticities, items from the past, falls off the grid. This is her account, typos included, of what happened during the three days she was off the grid. Believe it or not, she swears its true, even though she has no proof, technical or physical.

Such a riveting tale. The synopsis tells you a lot, but actually reading the story from Katya’s point of view was fun. She rambled a bit and apologized for her typos. Once I could shut off my editing filter, I found it quite fun.

A mysterious hunter, alias – Johnny, kidnapped Katya and revealed to her what his involvement was with the missing deer in the forest, and at this point the story took me down the proverbial rabbit hole.

Science fiction and futuristic technology along with intriguing characters captured my imagination. But I had some difficulty navigating the ending. It felt somewhat abrupt and I reread it, trying to squeeze more of a conclusion out of it. If the author chose to, she could make this part of a larger book and I’d gladly reenter this world.

Synopsis

Katya deals in Authenticities and Captures, trading on nostalgia for a past long gone. Her clients are rich and they demand items and experiences with only the finest verifiable provenance. Other people’s lives have value, after all.

But when her A.I. suddenly stops whispering in her ear she finds herself cut off from the grid and loses communication with the rest of the world.

The man who stepped out of the trees while hunting deer cut her off from the cloud, took her A.I. and made her his unwilling guest.

There are no Authenticities or Captures to prove Katya’s story of what happened in the forest. You’ll just have to believe her…

West Of Dead

A Nathaniel Caine Adventure #1

by Eric Bahle

Genre: Horror/Western/Zombies

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

I love a good zombie story. Throw in the unique challenge of dealing with them in a western setting, with less technology and none of the fancy weapons of modern day, and my curiosity gets tweaked.

Early into the story, I knew I wanted to know more about Nathaniel Caine. He wasn’t that surprised about the idea of flesh eating zombies, so I wondered what else he might have bumped up against in his past.

It’s an odd group of passengers sharing the stage coach. Most don’t detect anything wrong when they pull up to the deserted way station. A few know right away somethings wrong. It doesn’t take long for the zombies to attack and its a humdinger to get out of there alive.

I was imagining how bad it is when zombies attack you in your car. Think how much worse to be in a windowless stagecoach pulled by horses. Zombies like horse flesh too. I remember how bad it went for Rick Grimes on The Walking Dead show when he was riding a horse through town.

The only place even close to them might not be safe either. The zombies had to come from somewhere. And one passenger seems to know a whole lot more than he should about the phenomenon.

This was a fun one. There were some interesting characters, a new twist on zombies, and a super villain. There has to be a villain in an apocalypse, right? This guy was a real scum bag. Made it interesting to see whether he made it out alive or eaten, or maybe turned into one of the undead.

There’s a second book available with Nathaniel as the main character and I plan to see what he encounters next.

Solid writing made this an easy read and even though it was a short story, it felt big.

~~~~~
Synopsis
Fans of Joe R. Lansdale, Robert Davis, and Adam Millard will love this fast paced tale of the Weird West.
What good is a six-shooter against a horde of the undead?
Nathaniel Caine wants to forget the War and see the frontier, and a trip by stagecoach seems like the perfect way. When the stage pulls into a deserted way station with obvious signs of violence, but a disturbing lack of bodies, he suspects things are going bad. Things go from bad to worse when the passengers fall under attack by people that should be dead, and Caine must call on old skills just to survive. He’ll also need the help of a fellow passenger who knows more than he’s telling if the restless dead are to be put back in the ground.
My Review
I grabbed this as a free download from Amazon. I’ve always enjoyed stories set in space and I do love horror.
Imagine this. Three women, so different, isolated on a small moon. Their job, patrol and keep strange beings from taking root there. They use their sting sticks to rid the moon of mostly benign and nuisance things.
So, when a new alien, one not recognized on any database, is discovered by one of the girls, she isn’t too concerned about it. She should have been.
Strange beings on a moon far, far away. What’s not to love. Remember the movie The Thing. That’s what this story reminded me of. How do you defend against something that you can’t detect? With help at least three days away, you only have each other to rely on, and no one can trust the other now.
Not a very long book. Crisp writing with no wasted words had it moving along quickly. While the outcome may have been a bit predictable, it was still a blast to read.
And the author does a great job of fleshing out her characters in a short amount of words. They come to life quickly and are easily visualized.
This is a series and I feared a cliff hanger. Nope. The story is wrapped up, yet, it does leave an opening for you to wonder where the author will take the story from here. I plan to find out, as I have the rest of the books now.
A fun, creepy read for those who like the dynamics of characters isolated by the elements and the unknown things that share space with us.
Creepy aliens and the trials of contending with danger in remote locations has always fascinated me. Getting all of that plus the spectacular cover will keep me reading this series.
Synopsis
It wears our skin…
Station 331, situated on a remote moon near at edge of the known system, isn’t a prestigious place to work. Its three-person staff has one basic job: kill the plant-like lifeforms that come off space rubble and meteors.
Jen just wants to get through her eight-month shift without going crazy from the tedium or her co-workers’ bickering. That plan crumbles when Carly discovers a strange lifeform during a routine patrol.
The small, fluid creature nestled in the base of a crater doesn’t match any of the entries in their database. Protocol says they should call for backup, but Carly insists they can deal with the lifeform themselves.
It’s a simple choice for Jen, but her mistake will unleash unimaginable horror…
…and the nearest help is three days away.
My Review
Here we go again. On to Station 332. A distress call has been sent. Cryptic in nature. No clue what’s wrong.
The response team hurtles through space to the far off moon to answer the call. Upon arrival, no one is there to greet them. Once they get inside, it appears normal enough. Then they find the first body, and the next….Something bad went down. It looks to be a murder-suicide. But one team member is accounted for and nothing is at it seems.
Cue the creepy music. I know something bad is going to go down. And it doesn’t take long for the rescue team to find it.  Drawing again from John Carpenter’s movie The Thing, I had some great visuals as the alien being leaves a trail of bloody destruction.
There’s this really cool scene where they step onto the moon’s surface and sink knee deep into diamond dust. Had to snicker when Jay made a snow angel. Imagine a planet covered in diamond dust. I’d be stuffing my pockets and anything else I had. But, I guess it’s not as valuable in the future. Just a nuisance.
As with the first book, there is an ending to this part of the story, but I suspect it only gets worse in the coming books. And it didn’t matter that some of this was predictable. I may have had an idea of what would happen, but who would live and who would die wasn’t certain. Don’t become too fond of any one character. The author may leave that one in a bloody pile in the station.
Another fun episode in the series. Things can only get worse! Can’t wait.
~~~~~

Synopsis

For Charles, responding to Station 332’s emergency help request starts out no different than any other mission. She’s been paired with a near-retirement medic, Robin, and a lax mechanic, Jay. Their job is simple: check the station, kill any threats, provide assistance if needed, then return to Central.

But this is unlike any assistance request Charles has been on before.

Someone or something has destroyed the station, smashing the control panel and upending equipment. They find two bodies–murdered–in the bedroom, and the third staff member is missing.

Robin labels it a murder-suicide, but Charles has doubts.

Something is killing Central’s best fighters, leaving humanity defenceless. It’s spreading quickly. And the danger lives closer to home than anyone ever expected…

My Review

The amount of distress calls coming in are becoming too frequent, too numerous to be a normal occurrence. teams are being sent all over the place. As one scientist waits for a team to return, she can’t help but fear what might be coming.

It doesn’t take long for the suspense to start building. You know something’s not right after the team returns. The leaders actions are kind of off. And when Kala, the young scientist, gets her hands on an alien sample, the horror becomes reality.

How do you fight such an organism. It cleverly disguises itself as its host, hiding beneath the skin, taking on the hosts memories and mannerisms. What if it becomes smarter? Learns? And what if it begins to spread it’s infection, branching out from moons to stations as rescue teams return, exposing unsuspecting people?

The first three books in this series are short. The author is busy building her world, introducing the alien being, and setting the stage for more horrors to come. The final two books are much longer and I’m looking forward to more action, deeper plots, and bloody mayhem as the people battle a creature that’s nearly indestructible. Bring it on!

4 Stars

Synopsis

Kala never wanted to be a hero. She was a junior scientist studying under the highly-respected Commander Stanos when her station was attacked.

The threat is unlike anything Kala could have imagined: the aliens are fast, overwhelmingly strong and pathologically intent on killing any human they encounter. Worse, they have a flawless disguise. Once they kill a human, the aliens absorb its body and assume its skin.

But Kala thinks she’s discovered their weakness. And her knowledge might be humanity’s only hope.

This year has started off with a bang. My resolution was to take in less review requests so I could start whittling down those books on my TBR. Well, that started great and then a whole bunch of new books caight my eye and I had to read them. LOL You know how that is, don’t ya?

So, I’ve been reading like crazy, but not feeling quite as much pressure to get reviews done on a deadline. That makes my reading even more enjoyable too.

And, I’ve either been incredibly lucky or my book radar is dead on because the majority of books I’ve read this year have been 4 and 5 Star reads.

My Review

Welcome to Ben’s world. Where machines short out and go up in flames in his presence. He has this thing called Bio-Chemical Electrical Discharge, B.C.E.D., a real condition. He gives off electrical discharges that cause machines to go haywire. Ben’s brother-in-law, Roger, put together some inhibitors, but they are no longer helping.

Enter Warwick, an institute filled with zany geniuses, scientists of all shapes and sizes. Here’s where Roger claims he can help Ben. And here’s where the conspiracy and lunacy take place.

You know those books you glance at but never pick up? You don’t know the author, or the cover or genre might not grab ya? You might want to slow down and pick one of them up, give it a try. That’s what I did with Tegon Maus. And boy did I get some great reading.

Having read Bob and currently reading Service Before Self, I fell in love with Tegon’s humor, his ability to suck me into his stories quickly, and the wildly diverse cast of characters he comes up.

I especially enjoy the humor. I anticipate it with each turn of the page. While the first book in this series, Machines of the Little People, gave me some, I got a whole lot more in this one.

I actually got a whole lot more of everything. More conspiracy, more science fiction, more mystery. And more new characters.

I often wonder where Tegon’s characters come from. Ben has three new friends at Warwick and I loved them.

Digby, Marcie, and Peterson are a hoot. They actually believe Ben has X-ray vision and see through their clothes. More of that Tegon humor.

You’ll get a deeper story about Ben and Roger here too. Roger tests Ben’s friendship. He’s deep into his inventions and losing his humanity. While Ben is seeing a side of Roger that scares him.

I wouldn’t recommend you reading this without having read the first book. To get the whole experience you need to meet these characters and enter their world from the beginning.

Remember what I told you, don’t judge or a book by its cover or genre. You never now what gem you might be missing.

During that last summer, as if in punishment for being happy, Kate was diagnosed with cervical cancer.

The last time we used the wishing stone was at the hospital the morning she died.

On that day, all three of us made a silent wish, certain the others had wished the same. Kate died that afternoon and I never thought about it again. It was the last time I believed in magic, in love or in the existence of God.

Then, after three miserable lonely years, the unthinkable, a second chance . . . Warwick.

Praise for The Wishing Stone (The Eve Project – Book 2)

“More great Sci-Fi adventure from Tegon Maus. He doesn’t just give us a good Sci-Fi story. He gives us a story with great characters and a unique story and is able to include many other genres in his Sci-Fi stories. Comedy, drama and action.  Let’s pray for a book three in the series.”-Erik Nelson, Author ‘Unlawful Protection’

“This is a great science fiction story, which follows on nicely from The Eve Project: Book 1, Machines of the Little People, however could easily be read as a stand-alone.
It has it all for science fiction fans, top secret scientific projects, a great storyline, twists and turns round every corner, yet, at its very core lies, dare I say it, a love story.
It has a great finish, however, at the end, all I wanted to know from the author – is there is another book in the series coming?  I hope so”-Susan Keefe, Author ‘Toby’s Tales’ Series

“I enjoyed The Wishing Stone even more than the first book, even though, again, it’s not my usual read. I really liked the eccentric scientist characters Ben meets at Warwick, and as with book one, Tegon Maus did a great job of keeping me guessing what was really going on right to the very end. I look forward to finding out what book 3 has in store!”-Nick Stead, Author ‘Hybrid’

My Review

I’ve read other books by Tegon Maus so I knew one thing for sure, you never know what you’re going to get with his stories.

So the story goes…Ben’s sister died of cancer and her husband, Roger, Ben’s best friend, up and vanishes, not even attending his own wife’s funeral.

Needless to say, that puts a strain on their friendship. Even more so when Roger reappears with a new wife, a carbon copy of his old one, and he’s acting all wiggy. Claims there are little people, calls them Katoy, living under his house, running strange machines.

Things go further south when Roger’s new wife is found murdered and he has vanished again.

So many characters in this story, it’s hard to choose a favorite, but I’d go with Ben. He has this thing called B.C.E.D., or Bio-Chemical Electrical Discharge. He makes electronics go haywire. He has his car, Margaret, specially shielded, but still has problems with her.

There’s some fun scenes because of his condition. People even close their doors when he approaches, not wanting their equipment to short out or burn up. This is where some of the authors trademark humor appears.

There’s a couple of old ladies that had me in stitches. One’s a psychic, and copious drinking is needed for her to use her ability. Nothing like some old birdies deep in their cups. LOL

As I’m huge on character driven stories, Tegon never fails to give me plenty to keep me entertained. Where he came up with the Katoy is a mystery in itself. Perhaps he sat down with those little old ladies.

I’d tag this a science fiction mystery with heavy doses of humor.

Seeing this is a series, I wanted to ease your anxiety. The author wraps up the mystery. There’s no cliff hanger. But there’s still plenty to be carried on in the next book. Looking forward to it.

Praise for Machines of the Little People (The Eve Project – Book 1)

“The plot is unique, I must say that I haven’t read a Sci Fi book so original in a long time. It has everything, mystery, suspense, romance, eccentric characters, conspiracy theories, and of course the little people with their machines!
Crazy, Wild, Excellent Written. Highly Recommended!!!”- Julia Damatto, Romorror Fan Girl

“the real joy of this book is not the plot itself. The real joy is the way in which Maus keeps his readers constantly off guard, stringing them along for pages before flipping the situation on its head and forcing readers to reevaluate whatever they thought they knew. Normally, that just pisses me off, but the way Maus manipulates his readers makes us squeal with delight at every turn. There is an energy to his novels, a sense of urgency tinged with wonder. We trust that wherever he takes us–and it won’t be somewhere we expect–it will be an adventure in the truest sense of the word.
And then we have the characters. At the end of the day, it’s the characters that make a Maus book what it is.
Definitely recommended for anyone who just wants a cracking good story. “-Jonathan Cook, Author ‘Youth and Other Fictions’

“Anyone who loves a good science fiction/fantasy story would have a hard time putting this one down.”- Lisa Binion, Author ‘Softly and Tenderley’

Tegon Maus

Tegon Maus was raised pretty much the same as everyone else… devoted mother, strict father and all the imaginary friends he could conjure. Not that he wasn’t friendly, he just wasn’t “people orientated”. Maybe he lived in his head way more than he should have, maybe not. He liked machines more than people, at least he did until I met his wife.

The first thing he can remember writing was for her. For the life of him he can’t remember what it was about… something about dust bunnies under the bed and monsters in my closet. It must have been pretty good because she married him shortly after that. He spent a good number  of years chasing other dreams before he got back to writing.

It wasn’t a deliberate conscious thought, it was more of a stepping stone. His wife and himself had joined a dream interpret group and we were encouraged to write down our dreams as they occurred. “Be as detailed as you can,” we were told.

He was thrilled. If there is one thing he enjoys it’s making people believe him and he likes to exaggerate. Not a big exaggeration or an outright lie mind you, just a little step out of sync, just enough so you couldn’t be sure if it were true or not.  When he writes, he always write with the effort of “it could happen” very much in mind and nothing, he guarantees you, nothing, makes him happier.

He has consistently placed in the top 3 in 189 writing contest in a variety of genres and has been featured in magazines a couple of times to raise money for Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital.

Welcome to my Saturday Screams where I share reviews of all things scary.

For today I have a some good ones from my TBR that I’ve been wanting to share. For the past two weeks I’ve shared the first four episodes of Marilyn Peake’s zombie series, Mutation Z.. Check out One and Two HERE, and Three and Four HERE. This week I’m sharing books five and six, the final two.

Without further adieu….

Mutation Z

Dragon In The Bunker

Book Five

by Marilyn Peake

My Review

Hunter puts his disguise to the test and it works. Good thing too. He escaped getting blown to smithereens when he went to a clandestine meeting in the middle of nowhere.

The information he received was so horrifying, yet it was detrimental to all of their survival. It looks bad and the virus can only keep spreading.

I’m still surprised by how much can happen in each of these short episodes. The conspiracy keeps getting deeper and uglier. And it’s so easy to believe it could happen. Big Brother is a bully.

What’s happening with the zombies will turn your stomach. Maybe they aren’t human any longer, but how they’re dispatched is truly evil.

As the world crumbles, many people die. How could it be any other way. I was saddened, though I knew it could happen.

I’m having a hard time clinging to hope for the characters and the world. The next book was just released and I’m ready to see where the author goes with this.

Zombie horror, big government, a little bit of science fiction, and some modern cyber twists. Too good to pass up.

My Review

I almost didn’t want to start this one as it’s the final book and I didn’t want it to end.

I wondered who would survive, if they’d find a cure, whether the world could be saved. I didn’t have a clue how all of my questions would be answered.

The author did a bang up job of doing just that. She gave me lots of endings for lots of characters.  I got a pretty good idea of what would happen with the bad guys. No real surprise there. It’s happened that way for a lot of them in real life, so it felt right. And I learned what would happen to the world.

Curious about how she would handle the two kinds of zombies, she explained that too.

 All that and Marilyn still found room to throw in some sea pirates. Not bad at all. Nothing felt rushed or disjointed. It all flowed easily to the end.

I hope you get a chance to read this series. I’d recommend you try the first one. If it’s you’re cuppa tea, grab the rest. The price is right and you’ll be able to zip through them without pause.

Ellie Jordan: Ghost Trapper

Cold Shadows

Book Two

by J. L. Bryan

23308727

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

It’s time for Ellie to get back to ghost trapping. She’s got a nasty new case. Looks like it might be a poltergeist.

The family is experiencing loud noises, objects getting thrown around, toys playing by themselves.

There is a young lady in the house and that’s usually where a poltergeist comes from. All that teen angst. And she’s got a lot of it. But their younger son is experiencing some odd things too. Imaginary friends that are causing him to slowly withdraw from the family.

If it’s a poltergeist, it’s like nothing they’ve heard of before. Seems to be more powerful and have its own agenda.Things get more violent, and Ellie comes under attack. It’s time to trap this entity before some gets seriously hurt or dies.

Ellie’s new assistant Stacey, is coming along nicely. She may spend most of her time in their van outside, monitoring the cameras, but she’s ready at the drop of a hat to rush in when Ellie gets in trouble. Which she does when she tries to tackle whatever entity is attacking the family.

I like Stacey’s sense of humor. She’s always trying to put her own name to occurrences. And she never cuts Ellie any slack about her love life, or lack of.

Ellis is getting more confident as she gains experience. She’s a great researcher and not afraid to try a new angle when an entity defies capture.

There’s mention again of Ellie’s parents, teasers about how they died and by who or what’s hands. I hope we get that story somewhere in this series.

This was another gripping ghost tale and it had a gothic feel to it. I could see the house, scary even in the daylight. Feel the heavy, malevolent atmosphere inside. And I think I was more scared than Ellie when things got really violent.

The title for this series may have you thinking of the movie Ghostbusters. You might expect it to be all fun and filled with ecto spewing ghosts. There may be some of that, but these are darker, more developed hauntings, fraught with danger. Watch your step is what I say.

If you like ghost stories that make you jump at sudden noises, keep you looking at those shadows that move out of the corner of your eye, and sleep with the light on, I recommend you give this series a read. Keep a torch handy in case the electricity goes out.

Ellie Jordan: Ghost Trapper

The Crawling Darkness

Book Three

My Review

I’m not sure why I didn’t notice it before, but checking out the titles to the books in this series, I noticed how cleverly they revealed hints about what’s waiting in the haunted pages inside.

There’s something nasty haunting the apartment house. One that Ellie and her boss, Calvin, have come up against before, and lost.

I’ve always been curious about how Calvin ended up in a wheelchair. I knew it had something to do with trapping ghosts and being attacked. The house they are investigating abuts another property. One with an abandoned, boarded up house. It just so happens, that’s where the attack occurred. Could this be the same entity? Could it have just moved to the next inhabited house? And is it appearing at the other houses that connect to the property?

Whatever it is, it seems to be drawn to the children. Feeds off of their fear. And if you get in its way, the consequences are very bad.

The creeping darkness reminded of the thing in the movie Babadook. You don’t see it clearly. It hides in the shadows, sneaking around, crawling on ceilings and along banisters. Slipping under doors and vanishing. How do you fight something like that?

Something fun is happening in this series too. Stacey and Jacob, the psychic they use in some of their cases, are dating. And one of the residents in the haunted apartments happens to be a hunky fireman, and he’s single. Could this be the end of Ellie’s sadly lacking love life? We’ll see.

I’ve got to hand it to the author. It takes a lot to give me the creeps, and the entities he’s thrown at me in this series have me rethinking ever stepping foot in anything with even a remote possibility of being haunted. Scary good it is. And I can’t imagine what he’ll spook me with next.

 My Review

The first thing I noticed about this book was the story takes place in Georgia. It’s supposed to be one of the most haunted cities in the south, steeped in dark stories. It’s the perfect setting.

You’ve read the blurb so you know this is about a haunted house. So I’m going to introduce you to the ghost trappers from Eckhart Investigations instead of telling you what you already know.

Retired Homicide Detective Calvin Eckhart is the owner and boss man. He needed something to do with all of those empty days and  it was an easy decision to start investigating hauntings as he had a keen interest in the supernatural.

Since he’s confined to a wheelchair and not getting any younger, he hires Ellie James to do the work for him. To determine if there is, in fact, a haunting, and then take care of that pesky ghost.

Ellie Jordan, head ghost trapper. Her job is to determine if a house is haunted, and either to get the ghost to vacate, or trap it and dispose of it in a safe place.

She’s my favorite character. Smart, determined, and gutsy, she goes places I’d never dream of entering.

But even she is terrified as the ghost turns out to be many ghosts, and the danger escalates into the physical realm.

Stacey is the newbie. Eckhart didn’t like Ellie going into a haunting investigation alone. It could be very dangerous. Stacey always had an interest in ghosts, and really wants to meet one up close. She helps set up the video equipment and monitored the cameras from outside in a van. She’s in contact with Ellie, and helps to pinpoint where a ghost might be lingering. Her enthusiasm is fun and addictive. I doubt she’ll be so eager to see a ghost after this job.

Jacob Weiss is thrust upon Ellie by the boss. Eckhart insists a psychic could be beneficial. Jacob is one of only a few survivors of a horrible plane crash and now can contact ghosts. He comes into the story closer to the end so I didn’t get to know him very well, but as this is a series, I hope to see more of him. He did come in handy though, so Eckhart was wise to use him.

Finally, the hauntees, the Treadwell family, consisting of Dale, Anna, and their young daughter Lexa. They bought a rundown mansion in an out of the way place. The only other structures on the street are some derelict warehouses and factories. They have big plans to renovate the house and turn it into a bed and breakfast. Dale came up with a great idea. They could add a sports lounge for the men, complete with a huge flat screen TV to watch the games, and plenty of beer. That would make it appealing to the husbands while the quiet holiday appealed to the wives. It’s really a good idea.

There’s just one little hitch. The house came with a ghost, a very expressive ghost. It wants just one thing…for them to vacate the premises, now!

I’d tell you about the ghosts but that would be telling you the story. I can tell you this. I don’t think I’ve experienced such an intense, nail-biting, scene as the one when these characters enter the house for the final event. If it was a movie, I’d have been peeking through my fingers.  Horror doesn’t always come with a happy outcome, so all of them were fair game to die a grisly death. That kept me reading, eyes zipping from word to word, hoping for the best and fearing the worst. I was breathless afterwards and my shoulders ached from the tension.

The author nailed it with his characters. Each almost immediately became familiar.

His ghosts were terrifying.

The plot was fun and scary and your quickly immersed in it.

And this is book one in the series, so read it now. That way you’ll be ready for the next one.

My Review

Holy crap!

Just when you think things can’t get any crazier, they do. This is one intense series. I loved the first two books and this one is just as good, if not better.

Don’t count on your favorite characters surviving. I read this episode knowing anything could happen. But I wasn’t prepared for how things would go down.

And what’s this about protecting the zombies? What could be the motive behind that, I wonder.

Hang on to your butts, people. This is a boat load of trouble with an ending that will rock you to your core.

I don’t see how the author can make this series any more horrifying or emotional, but we shall see.

My Review

And this series gets even more intense.

The beginning grabs you, yanks you into Hunter’s nightmares, and gives you a little reprieve before sending you back into the horror.

After the horrific loss Hunter endured, I didn’t see a happy ending for him. I’m crossing my fingers things get better, but don’t see that in the foreseeable future. He’s on the run, hunted for what he knows. Desperate measures must be taken.

Well, the author did it again. Kept me tearing through this episode, cringing, cheering, and hoping.  Mutation Z is like zombie M&Ms. You can’t read just one and keep reaching for more.

Can’t wait for the next one.

My Review

I loved everything about this book. From the different points of view to the different dates in time to the fantastic illustrations and the hair raising creepiness.

When I reached the end of this book, Onyx Webb was still an enigma to me. I know there are many more episodes to come and I’m sure I’ll figure her out. The jury is still out about her right now.

Ever wanted to know how it felt to be a ghost? From what I learned in this book, it’s no fun. Can’t taste, can’t feel, and can’t love. Why stick around? This story will tell you why.

Taking place in different time periods, all of the characters start their stories here and it’s promised by the authors that following episodes will reveal their full stories and bring all of the characters together.

For now, I’m just getting to know Onyx and her father Catfish, rich boy Koda Mulvaney and his best friend Dane, Quinn Cole and his missing sister Juniper, and a slew of secondary characters.

I’ve read other books written in episodes but not quite like this. The characters stories span many centuries but it’s easy to follow them as their voices speak clearly. And there are several mysteries happening at different times and I have no clue how they’ll all come together.

I also knew there wouldn’t be an ending in this book, so no surprise there. And that’s the ‘hook.’ I was hooked from the first chapter, compelled to keep reading, and in no hurry to finish.

The illustrations are spectacular and the writing is easy to follow. Not what you’d expect at all with the story occurring in several different time periods and told from many points of view.

Trying to label this, I’d call this a ghost story and a mystery. Maybe adding a dash of historical too. With lots of showing and some telling. Short chapters that make the read fly. And I believe I already mentioned the illustrations. They are all through the book and ‘tell’ a story too.

There are several more books to come, each containing three episodes. You can bet I’m off to grab the second book now and will be watching for others as they are released.

Book Description:

A multi-genre mash-up that combines elements of supernatural suspense, crime, horror, romance, and more. The Onyx Webb series follows the unusual life of Onyx Webb along with a central group of characters in various locations and times. The billionaire Mulvaney family, piano prodigy Juniper Cole and her brother Quinn, paranormal show hosts Cryer and Fudge, and a few others make up the core of the series.

Written like a book version of a supernatural soap opera, each character’s story moves forward with most every episode. It may appear that the characters are entirely unrelated and yet episode by episode, the connections will become clearer. Like being an inch away from a spider web, with each book, the web will move further and further away revealing the full story of every character and most importantly, the stunning conclusion for Onyx Webb herself.

Onyx Webb

Book Two

Episodes 4 – 5 – 6

28780117

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

My Review

As with the first book, you get three episodes.

I’m starting to get a feel for Onyx now. She kind of creeped me out in the first book. Now, I’m learning more about what she went through and why she wound up where she was. I wish I could have told her to leave that no good husband of hers.

Rich boy Koda is still obsessing over the girl in the mirror. His father and grandfather finally drill it into his head to get back to work or lose his job and all that money. When his good friend Dane suggests he go see a psychic, Koda’s skeptical. Yet, he gives in and boy does it go wrong on so many levels. This could be the end of their friendship.

I swear, what happened to Koda with the psychic came out of left field. I didn’t see it coming and it was just so awful, yet funny too. Can a get a, “There’s a sucker born every minute?”

I’d love to share more of the characters but then I’d be telling you everything. I’m becoming quite attached to all of them. They’re revealing more of their stories, their circumstances, and it’s really getting exciting.

I was worried I’d forget who was who and have trouble jumping forward and back in time, but the authors made it easy. I fell right back in and became lost in the pages.

The authors are starting to tie in some of the characters from future and past events. I got really excited as I saw this happening.  And they also through me for a loop with one tragic event. I couldn’t believe it. Why? It’s just so sad. I’m sure they will string it into upcoming episodes. I’m kind of curious how they plan to do that.

Here’s where I wish I was a writer so I could express how this series makes me feel. How these next three episodes got to me. It seemed like every page had something vital to tell or show me. I couldn’t read fast enough. Before I knew it there were only a few pages left. And then, none.

With several points of view and places in time, this is not a book to be read by itself. You really need to start this series at the beginning. That being said, I hope you try them. It’s a thrilling experience that keeps you engaged and hungry for more.

Northwoods

by Bill Schweigart

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

I swore I’d stay away from Netgalley requests until I’d reviewed all of the ARCs I already had. I just couldn’t resist Northwoods. It’s so my type of read! LOL

My Review

After I finished this book, I took another look at the cover art, thinking it didn’t really work. Then I thought about the story, and appreciated the subtlety. It works.

And I also ran into a few references to the authors earlier book, The Beast of Barcroft, while reading this one. Many of the characters are in both books and I’ll be grabbing it to see how they came together and how they survived. Should be another wicked fun read.

Circumstances land Davis Holland, an agent for Customs and Border Protection, in a small town in the Minnesota woods. He settles in, makes friends with the local police force and the citizens, and finds he likes the small town life.

A routine check on a possible illegal border crossing changes things. Davis and the town sheriff discover a massacre in the woods. Bodies torn apart, gnawed upon. And resting on a stump in the center of the carnage, a small wooden chest. Such an innocuous looking item, yet it’s allure is deadly.

From there, it doesn’t take long for things to get wiggy. Reinforcements are called in. People who’ve dealt with supernatural entities. Members of the team split up to find answers. Then they all converge for the final reckoning. And what a final reckoning it is.

The suspense and scares begin and escalate. Some scenes rock you back on your heels. People dye. A lot of them. Some you like too.  I can’t say I’m crazy about it when an author kills off characters I’ve become attached to, but that sure does hit home and make the story more genuine. So, I guess I do like it.

Grab a copy. Dig in. Prepare for plenty of spine tingling action and hair raising suspense. It begins, then never lets up.

Synopsis

Some borders should never be crossed. From the author of The Beast of Barcroft comes a waking nightmare of a horror novel that’s sure to thrill readers of Stephen King and Bentley Little.

Ex–Delta Force Davis Holland, now an agent for the Customs and Border Protection, has seen it all. But nothing in his experience has prepared him for what he and the local sheriff find one freezing night in the Minnesota woods.

Investigating reports of an illegal border crossing, the two men stumble across a blood-drenched scene of mass murder, barely escaping with their lives . . . and a single clue to the mayhem: a small wooden chest placed at the heart of the massacre. Something deadly has entered Holland’s territory, crossing the border from nightmare into reality.

When news of the atrocity reaches wealthy cryptozoologist Richard Severance, he sends a three-person team north to investigate. Not long ago, the members of that team—Ben McKelvie, Lindsay Clark, and Alex Standingcloud—were nearly killed by a vengeful shapeshifter. Now they are walking wounded, haunted by gruesome memories that make normal life impossible. But there is nothing normal about the horror that awaits in the Northwoods.

My Review

One twist after another in this short tale of a man in search of his son.

Right from the beginning, I knew something wasn’t right. Perhaps because I’ve read several books by this author, I was forewarned.

A man and a boy around a campfire, in the night. Doesn’t sound so bad. Until the man starts to threaten the lad, demanding to know where his son is, what he’s done with him. Twist number one.

As you learn about earlier events, twist number two occurs.

And when you reach the end, the final twist.

Coming in at last than 20 pages, it sure packs a wallop.

The cover art is perfect. Such a show and tell about this dark little story. You’ll see when you read it.
