A cruel lie ensnares Kai in her plan, but three missing mirror shards and Kai’s childhood friend, Gerda, present more formidable obstacles. Thyra’s willing to do anything – venture into uncharted lands, outwit sorcerers, or battle enchanted beasts — to reconstruct the mirror, yet her most dangerous adversary lies within her breast. Touched by the warmth of a wolf pup’s devotion and the fire of a young man’s desire, the thawing of Thyra’s frozen heart could be her ultimate undoing.

CROWN OF ICE is a YA Fantasy that reinvents Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Snow Queen” from the perspective of a young woman who discovers that the greatest threat to her survival may be her own humanity.

I couldn’t find a good quote on page 56 so I went to page 156 and found this.

I stared at myself in the mirror.

My nose was back to normal; the only remnant of my two black eyes was a slight yellow shading across one brow bone. I could use Ian’s balm, but I didn’t want to. For all I knew, the stuff was an aphrodisiac or some kind of lust potion, which would explain my hopping into bed with him so easily.

“It couldn’t just be that you were horny and he’s hot”? I asked the woman in the mirror.

She gave me the finger.

Excerpt:

The Prologue

            Evan’s face stared back at him from a large glossy poster hanging in the front window of the local post office. The words “Wanted Alive” were splattered across the top in big red letters. Someone had cast an animation spell over it to make his hooded eyes shift slightly, as if in guilt. Evan had seen all that before, but a new addition to the bottom of the poster stopped him dead in his tracks: “One Million Dollar Reward.”

            “Crap,” he muttered under his breath. He looked around, more than half expecting an ambush right there on the street, but he saw nothing sinister. He reached within himself for his magic anyway, channeling it into a shield that would protect him from most magical attacks.

            A million dollars. This was going to bring out every crazy in the country! He had been fighting bounty hunters for over a month, ever since the wanted posters first went up, but then the reward had only been $100,000.

            The Scots were either getting desperate or stupid to try something like this. Rumors already abounded regarding his bottomless reserves of magic, making him out to be some kind of inexhaustible fountain of power. The million-dollar reward would only confirm these lies in the minds of many; which meant that if someone did manage to catch Evan, the Scots were unlikely to get their hands on him. Why would a bounty hunter settle for money when he could have Evan’s magic for himself?

            Evan turned away from the poster and was just about to continue down the street when a black Suburban turned into the post office parking lot, cutting him off. He waited for it to pull into a spot, his shields still up, his senses alert.

            Robert Scot, Edward Scot’s cousin, stepped out of the vehicle, threw Evan a dirty look, then went around to the back to pull a four-year-old girl out of a car seat. The presence of the child did not convince Evan to lower his guard, though he truly hoped they hadn’t sunk so low as to fight when an innocent child might get hurt.

            One million dollars. People had killed for far less, and had allowed children to become victims. Robert Scot was a strong practitioner, on par with Edward, but he didn’t have access to the secrets of alchemy, and he was not a rich man. He earned a good living as a bank manager or something, but one million dollars had to be a temptation.

            The two men did not take their eyes from one another as Robert walked into the post office. Robert clutched the wriggling child, who clearly wanted down, to his chest in an almost painful grip. A minute later he was past, and Evan breathed a little easier. He walked away from the post office, heading down the sidewalk in the direction of his Prius, parked a few stores down. He still had errands to run, but in light of what he had learned about the reward, they didn’t seem important.

            Suddenly, an explosion rent the air. Evan dove behind the nearby antique shop, his shields maxed out, his senses hyper-alert. When he peeked around the corner, he saw smoke and debris where there had once been a Suburban.

            The chubby face of the little girl filled Evan’s mind, and he felt a moment of terror as he wondered whether or not Robert and his little girl had already returned to the car. Practically flying from his hidden position, Evan sped back to the post office and that mockery of a wanted poster, his eyes searching the interior until they fell, thankfully, onto the shocked faces of Robert Scot and his daughter huddled safely inside the building.

            Robert’s face didn’t remain shocked for long; it fell into an enraged scowl. Robert shoved the girl into the arms of a nearby post office patron and marched outside to confront Evan man to man.

            “You son of a bitch! My daughter could have been in there. I almost left her there while I ran inside, but then I saw you.”

            “I didn’t do that. I ran back to make sure you were all right.” More the girl than Robert, but still….

            Robert didn’t respond with words; instead he let loose with a torrent of raw energy that battered Evan’s shields until he could scarcely hold them. Raw magic wasn’t normally a useful attack strategy, but powerful emotion could turn it into one for a short time. Another blast like that and Evan would be in trouble, but he had no intention of letting Robert get off another shot. He parried the attack with his own telekinetic gift, throwing Robert bodily backward, forcefully enough that he smashed through the wanted poster and the glass window, shattering it.

            Evan didn’t wait for Robert to get back up; he ran. He hadn’t caused the explosion, and he had no reason to finish a fight against a man he scarcely knew, but one whose family seemed to want to go to war with his.

            The worst part was that someone in Evan’s family probably had done it–they had been muttering for weeks that they couldn’t just let the Scots persecute him. Evan had begged them to give him time, but obviously time had run out.

            Robert wouldn’t care whether Evan had been personally involved or not, nor would the rest of the Scots. And maybe they were right. Evan would find out who had done it and set him or her straight, but the damage was already done.

            The first direct shot had been fired.

I’ve found a new cozy mystery series! I just eat this genre up and am always on the lookout for more fun mysteries.

For today, I’ll be reviewing three books in the Klepto Cat Mystery Series by Patricia Fry.

Catnapped, Cat-Eye Witness and The Colony Cat Caper.

Good, clean romance, lots of colorful characters, more than one mystery to solve per book, and a wonderful cast of furry friends.

But before we get to my reviews, the author is here to talk about her writing experiences and how she came to be an author.

Take it away Patricia!

The Not So Accidental Career Path of a New Mystery Writer

I guess I was destined to be a writer. By sixth grade, I thought I knew my career path. I would be a dress designer…or maybe a model…or an artist. Instead, while still in my teens, I became a young wife and mother. My creative outlet—driven by the typical impoverished lifestyle of young marrieds in the 1960s—was writing poetry. Instead of buying holiday and birthday cards, I’d make them and feature my original poetry. My family and friends enthusiastically encouraged my efforts.

            As my children grew into toddlers and beyond, I wrote stories that I read to them. They, too, were a willing audience and it didn’t take me long to decide a new career path. I would become a writer!

            For the next ten years, I wrote for myself. I studied the art of writing and became fascinated with article-writing. And so it was that, when my three daughters became teenagers, I sat down at a borrowed manual typewriter in a corner of my bedroom and wrote my first magazine article. That was the beginning of a forty-year career that I have no intentions of ending anytime soon.

            Many people today are career-changers. It’s rather trendy to initiate a career change every ten or fifteen years. In my world, there was never any question of changing professions, but my focus shifted every so often. I wrote magazine articles for a living for many years. I developed and wrote a business column for a local newspaper. And, along the way, I wrote books. My first one was Hints for the Backyard Rider, which was published by a New York publisher in 1978. Then came a real labor of love, The Ojai Valley, An Illustrated History—a 300-page local history that was five years in the making. In 1983, I established my own publisher company to produce this book—and many to follow. From there, I wrote various books now and then related to things of interest to me—presenting a Hawaiian luau on the mainland, youth mentoring, long-distance grandparenting…

            And then, one day, I was asked to present a workshop to teach others what I had learned over the years about establishing a writing business. I was hooked. I LOVED teaching. And I began presenting workshops throughout the US and writing the books my students hungered for. Thus, most of my books, ebooks, booklets are on writing, publishing, and book promotion. (I currently have 45 published books.)

Over the years, I have presented seminars and workshops—and I’ve been keynote speaker—at some major writers’ conferences in Alaska, Florida, Hawaii, Maryland, Washington, North Carolina, Arizona, etc., as well as all over California. What fun!

            Another shift within my career occurred when authors began asking me to edit their manuscripts. I balked at this idea for several years. When I finally agreed to take on an editing project, I fell in love with the process. Naturally, I continued writing (I’ve found that I can’t not write). I continued teaching about the business of writing—publishing and book promotion. And now I was also editing the works of some amazing authors and guiding them in their publishing pursuits. I was a happy camper.

            This brings us up to 2012. It was time for another career assessment. I was getting ready to celebrate another birthday—if you do the math, you’ll know it was a kinda big one. I realized that most of my same-age friends were retired. I thought, “But I don’t wanna stop writing. I love my work.” Along with that, I asked myself, “Do you have any writing dreams that haven’t been fulfilled?” The answer came in one word: FICTION.

            Other than those little stories I used to write for my children, I had never written fiction. But it sounded like it would be fun. So I gave myself a birthday gift that year—the time and space to write a novel.

            The idea for my new novel series came rather quickly, as did the first story idea. And within a relatively short time, I was the author of a published novel, Catnapped, the first in the Klepto Cat Mystery series.

            Why the Klepto Cat Mystery? Well, I’d been reading cozy mysteries. Some of them involved cats. I love cats—have always lived with cats and am owned by three very spoiled indoor cats as we speak—all formerly feral and some still with untamed tendencies (bad habits carried over from their wild beginnings).

I am fascinated by the habits cats develop. Our sweet tabby Lily, for example, decorates the house with her toys. When I prepare to vacuum the carpeting, I’ll pick up around a dozen toys—tiny stuffed bears, a furry spider toy, a baby possum, little lion, a hedgehog, birds, etc. Within a few hours, these toys are spread all around in strategic locations of Lily’s choice again. Some of the toys in her toy basket are things she has “taken” from the grandkids’ toy box or a shelf where I had it on display. Her antics got me to thinking about true kleptomaniac cats—those that bring home things they find in the neighborhood—bathing suits, dog toys, head bands, shoes, sunglasses, etc. I thought the kleptomaniac cat could be helpful in solving crimes. And this is the premise I decided to go with for my stories.

            I patterned the main cat, Rags (Ragsdale) after my mother’s cat, Smokey because of his sense of confidence. Smokey is cool. He has what’s known as cattitude, and so does Rags. And guess what? People love Rags. He’s funny, unpredictable, and not always cooperative. Well, he’s a cat, after all.

            In my stories, cats don’t talk. Nor are we privy to their thought-process. They’re just cats doing what ordinary—and extraordinary—cats do to delight and entertain their people and my readers. My human characters also have fans. Reviewers love Aunt Margaret because she’s a little outspoken and feisty. Readers like Savannah, a veterinarian who adopted Rags and puts up with his unusual behavior, and her eventual husband, Michael, who is also a veterinarian. Each new story involves or focuses more heavily on someone new.

            This is a series. Each story builds off the last one and sets the stage for the next one. But many agree with me that each one is also a good standalone book. If you love cats and light mystery stories, pick up one of the Klepto Cat Mystery series. For the most satisfying experience, I recommend reading them in order: Catnapped, Cat-Eye Witness, Sleight of Paw (all of these are currently available for Kindle and also in print), Undercover Cat and The Colony Cat Caper are for Kindle only, but will be in print before the end of the year. And don’t worry, book number six is in the works. http://amzn.to/1kAI8I2 will take you to the Klepto Cat Mystery page at Amazon.

Catnapped

A Klepto Cat Mystery #1

18711069

My Review

 Savannah, taking time away from her job as a vet tech,  arrives in Hammond to help take care of her Aunt Margaret after she broke her foot, bringing along Ragsdale, her klepto cat. Rags is a thief and immediately he’s up to his antics, stealing Margaret’s glasses and even her underwear.

I’m more of a dog person but I’ve recently inherited a cat, and while she’s not a klepto, she does have her own quirky personality.

I live in a small town and we also have a Cat Coalition. Veterinarians and the community work together to take care of our colony of feral cats living on the bluff by the bay. Offering neuter and spay services and making sure the cats are kept healthy and fed.

When cats start disappearing, Savannah, along with the Hammond Cat Alliance and the whole town, are determined to get to the bottom of it.

Savannah’s stay becomes more complicated when she starts getting cozy with the sexy local vet, Michael Ivey.  A long distance relationship usually doesn’t last.

There’s more than one mystery in this book. Savannah is kidnapped and her Aunt Margaret is being threatened. While cats are still disappearing.

There are lots of colorful characters, more than one kindling romance. and a serious mystery but not too dark. The story is easy to follow and reads quickly.

You don’t need to be a cat lover to enjoy this cozy mystery. But you might be after meeting the furry characters.

4 Stars

Synopsis

When Savannah Jordan agrees to help her aunt while she recovers from a broken foot, she doesn’t expect to walk into a mystery, become part of a not-quite-legal surveillance team, be kidnapped by a deranged stranger and meet a steaming hot veterinarian. Beloved neighborhood cats are missing—the community can only guess at their fate—and Aunt Margaret’s life is being threatened. Is it because she has a clue to the missing cats or is it something more sinister?

If you like light mysteries with only a little terror, if you’re infatuated by interesting cats and if you love a love story, you must read this book.

~~~
Cat-Eye Witness
A Klepto Cat Mystery #2
18669556
My Review
This is the second book in the Catnapped Mysteries. Just want to warn you as it may contain spoilers.
Savannah never left Hammond. She helped in the rescue of the missing cats, along with some abused horses from the catnappers, and fell hard for Michael, the local vet and now her fiance, helping him in his practice.
When Savannah and her Aunt Margaret host a fundraiser for the recovered cats and horses at their home, the money goes missing and someone is killed.  Klepto cat, Rags, witnesses the theft and murder, but he ain’t talking, and Savannah’s best friend Iris comes under suspicion.
As the mystery unravels, you’ll bump into some favorite characters, add new ones to your list, including one that has an impact on Michael and Savannah, and read about more new romances in the works.
I really enjoyed that Savannah and Michael shared a love of horses. I’ve always adored the handsome animals and used to rush home to go riding as often as I could. It was very emotional to read how the two vets struggled to nurture a pregnant mare. One of the rescued horses. They tried to build up her strength for the delivery to come, but it started earlier than they’d like and mare and foal were both in danger.
I mustn’t forget to mention the furry companions. The cast of cats continue to grow, in all shapes, sizes, and personalities, and Rags has a big role in the mystery. He has an uncanny knack for finding clues, that even Detective  Sledge might have missed.
A perplexing cozy mystery. Multiple love stories. Loveable characters, human and furred.  There’s so much fun in these pages and I’m happy to recommend this series!
4 Stars
Synopsis
Savannah and Aunt Margaret open the old Forster home to the Hammond Cat Alliance for a fundraiser to help rehabilitate the abused horses rescued months earlier from the catnappers. Before the afternoon is over, the collected funds go missing and someone is murdered in an upstairs bedroom.
Suspicion surrounds Iris, a local waitress and Savannah’s new best friend. The only witness to the murder is Rags, Savannah’s cat. With the assistance of a cat psychic and Rags’s good friend, Charlotte (the young girl with Downs), the cat helps to “paw” the killer…but not before an attempt is made on Rags’s life. The case is solved only after Rags comes face-to-face with the killer for the second time.
Detective Craig Sledge is new to this book, as is Damon, Iris’s errant son. Sledge finds this to be one of the muddiest cases he has ever worked, with inconsistent clues and no apparent motive. He’s constantly surprised, perplexed and impressed by the cat’s uncanny ability to come up with clues he has missed. His fascination with the attractive Iris Clampton also mystifies the detective.
In this story, one of the rescued horses goes into labor and there’s a night of high drama at the ole corral as veterinarians Savannah and Michael work to save the foal. This experience renews Savannah’s deep interest in horses and riding, which ultimately serves to help her bond with a very important surprise character who finds his way into her life and Michael’s just as they prepare to say their wedding vows.
While Rags is the animal star, he isn’t the only animal featured in this story. Layla is back in all of her tangerine beauty. And Rags makes friends with Buffy, a perky almost Himalayan and the inseparable duo, Walter, an all black cat and his sidekick, Lexie, a charming afghan mix. Savannah’s new ride, Peaches, also debuts in this story. An incident with this mare adds another dimension to Savannah’s and Michael’s relationship. Can he hold her with open arms?
Some say this is a love story with a mystery in the background. And it’s a story of family and friendship as newlyweds Margaret and Max continue to be a meaningful part of Savannah’s and Michael’s world.
The Colony Cat Caper
 A Klepto Cat Mystery #5
22558699
My Review
*** Spoiler Alert***
This is the fifth book in the Catnapped Mysteries so spoilers will be hard to avoid.
This mystery starts out with a bang. Margaret and her friend Colbi are trussed up in an old building with little hope of rescue.
From there, the author takes you back to what leads up to this scene.
Savannah, now happily married with a baby on the way, is one maternity leave. She joins up with her Aunt Maragaret and reporter Colbi Stanton to help a cat colony at an old abandoned building.
There’s a mystery surrounding the building. Some believe it’s haunted by something supernatural.
As with her other books, Patricia Fry gives you several mysteries to solve and Savannah’s klepto cat, Rags, really ups the ante with his exciting discovery.
What did Rags unearth? Who or what lurks in the building? Are the cats safe? This and more will be revealed as you dive in and mingle with a diverse cast of characters, good and bad, human and furred.
I’ve read the first two books in this series, so I felt comfortable in skipping to this fifth book. While I had no trouble following the story and catching up on early events, I’ll be picking up the third and fourth book so I can experience them first hand. This series is that fun!
Synopsis
Savannah Ivey, a veterinarian out on maternity leave; her aunt Margaret, the founder of the Hammond Cat Alliance; and Colbi Stanton, a reporter for the local newspaper take on a cat colony at an old, abandoned building. Odd activity around the place makes them wonder if it actually is vacant; some believe it’s occupied by something other-worldly. When a stranger comes to town and suggests the Alliance open the old building to a fund-raiser, everyone gets involved, including Rags, Savannah’s kleptomaniac cat. He finds something that day that stirs a lot of people—both law-abiding and crooks—into action. Are the feral cats and their caretakers in serious danger? What (or who) lurks inside the old building? What secrets does it hide? And who has the key that unlocks the mystery?
Here is the new cover. Is it not spectacular? The faint hint of color like a ray of light. The wing tip and falling feathers. The peak she is standing on and the silhouette of her holding her crossbow, looking outwards.
All of these things pertain to the story and bring back fantastic memories.
Bravo!
MY REVIEW
I’m reposting my review so you don’t have to leave the page!
I did not read the back flap before I started reading Wormwood. I had also received another book in the mail that day and mistakenly thought this was the book about aliens. Boy, was I surprised.
The first chapter introduces you to Kali. She is a trail guide at Pinecrest National Park. A quiet hike up to her favorite spot, Lookout Peak, starts out normally enough, but a light breeze quickly becomes a tree snapping gale. The once clear skies have turned a heavy grey-black, the clouds tumbling over each other as they race towards her.
This would not be so bad if the woods had not suddenly gone silent. Not a sound could be heard. The winds had stopped and all was still. Not even a bird song was heard. Into this silence came a rumbling that turned into a roar. The ground began to vibrate under her feet and she could see something was coming. The trees started to shake and then to fall, the ground began to roll. Kali ran.
The earth twists and buckles as she tries to reach the safety of Lookout Peak. Trees and shrubs reach out as if to grab her. She sees her goal and rushes forward. Stillness. All around her the earth is raging. Great rents appear, lava flows up from below, the skies open up and rain and hail lash down, but from her vantage point all she feels is a mild tremor under her feet. How can this be?
Kali wants to move out from under the overhanging rocks and edges around them to a clear space. The rocks could fall at any moment. There is a campfire burning. She is not alone up here. A quick look around reveals a figure standing on the cliffs edge, his arms stretched out towards the devastation that is still raging below.
TIAMAT
I tell ya, I was not prepared for this. I was exhausted from the tension I experienced following Kali’s mad dash to safety. My description is just a wee bit of what she goes through.
I am so excited just thinking about what I want to tell you. This happened and that happened! And what? I have never read a story quite like this. There is so much going on. The story raced to its conclusion, leaving me stunned.
At times I was scared. Other times I was so mad. And at one part, I realized I was crying, and it hurt.
D. H. Nevins has written a fantastic story of the end of the world and the last survivors. Perhaps this description is too simple, but I hesitate to tell much of the story. I want you to read it like I did. Unprepared and wide-eyed. I want you to get to know each character and discover just what is really causing all the destruction.
I hope when you read Wormwood, you’ll tell me how it made you feel. Did you experience it like I did?
A huge Thank You to the author for an extremely well written story in which to immerse myself.
Synopsis
Against a devastated landscape, a legion of one hundred fierce half-angels is hell-bent on purging the Earth of all humans. But one of them, the tormented Tiamat, struggles against his mission, and when he rescues a beautiful woman named Kali, he finds the attraction as troubling as it is miraculous. Can Kali trust the one creature who could be responsible for her ultimate demise?
Beautifully written and excitingly told, Wormwood creates a world that is as strange as it is compelling. Filled with brilliantly executed twists and turns on every page that are guaranteed to keep you guessing, Wormwood is one of the most exciting debuts of the year.
A New Cover for Wormwood
First of all, before I say anything else, let me introduce Wormwood’s new cover. Oh, and before I do that, I should forewarn you that I’m a tad biased about this…
The New:
wormwood finalA
This beauty took my breath away the moment I saw it. As an author, I couldn’t ask for a better representation of my work. And I’m kind of picky—so that says a lot! The image projects a mood that reflects the feel of my story so perfectly, I knew the cover artist understood Wormwood on multiple levels. But even if we’re just talking aesthetics, well, although I am most definitely biased, I think this is one fantastic-looking cover!
.
.
.
.
..
The Old:
Wormwood  old Cover (Front Only)
I originally had a different cover for Wormwood. It was a simple black and white etching by Gustave Doré, depicting a fallen angel reaching towards the heavens. The sheer turmoil apparent through the angel’s expression and pose not only fascinated me, but seemed a perfect depiction of the conflict raging through Tiamat, a half-angel in Wormwood. However, the etching–although classic–was hardly a trendy cover. The story itself was very well-received, but I found that people had trouble getting past the antiquated-looking cover in order to take a chance on reading what was within. My love for the cover, it seemed, was a lonely one!
.
.
.
The Cool How:
wormwood Derek Murphy
About a month ago, I was contacted by cover artist extraordinaire, Derek Murphy. He had read Wormwood and subsequently offered to make up a new cover for the book—for free. Surprised, flattered and curious about the vision he had for Wormwood, I heartily agreed.
Then, as you know, the resulting cover blew my expectations out of the water! Its impact was immediate.
.
.
Why it Works:
The image depicts the book genre clearly. The colour contrast is striking, which catches the eye instantly. Plus, it’s incredibly professional.
It also fits the story.
On a literal note, the protagonist is a strong female, adept with a crossbow, yet still out of her element. However, she would never admit it. I could see this in her stance. Yet the cover holds so much more than a simple literal representation of Wormwood. Derek recreated the feel of the book perfectly. The mixture of light and darkness remind me of a review Wormwood once received which, in part, said, “The lines will be blurred between good and evil, love and hate, truth and lies, and hero and antagonist.” The hazy fusion of sunlight and shadow reflect this beautifully. The unsettled, foreboding skies mirror the mood of this dark, post-apocalyptic story, and the falling feathers are a nice touch. They hint at the half-angels in the story without hitting potential readers over the head with their existence. The fact the feathers are broken and falling is also perfect, but I hesitate to say why… after all, I don’t want to spoil the most exciting parts of the book!
The Alternatives:
It was exceedingly difficult to select my favourite cover. Every mock-up Derek created was incredible in its own right, and it would be a shame not to share them. So in all their glory, here are the other options he came up with.
wormwood new cover 1  wormwood new cover 2  wormwood new cover 3
The third one—the one with the wing obscuring the girl’s face—is so amazing, I’d very much like to use it as the cover for my sequel, Angel of Shadow. What do you think?
My Thanks:
Naturally, I wouldn’t be sharing this with you if it wasn’t for Derek Murphy. His outstanding covers and unprecedented talent can be seen on his website, CreativIndie Covers. Have a look at http://bookcovers.creativindie.com/
MY REVIEW
I’ve always been a horse lover so what could be better than a story about a horse wrangler and a park ranger.
When a poacher starts killing animals in the park, Ranger Joel Morgan is brought in to track him down. His first brush with trouble isn’t the poacher, it’s sassy horse wrangler, Brittany Lucas.
Brittany is camping in the park, enjoying some alone time when she awakens to a strange man snooping around her camp. Recalling the warnings of a poacher,  her guard goes up. When the dust settles, she ends up sharing her tent with Ranger Joel. He won’t leave her alone in the park, and with heavy snows coming, they have to wait til morning to head out.
The sparks from the camp fire are nothing compared to the ones that occur between Brittany and Joel. The attraction is strong but both have assumed things about the each that have them battling wits.
I enjoy character driven novels and the author has many in this book. Brittany is kind and gentle, but also independent and strong-willed.
Joel is hard-headed, determined, and not easy to brush off.
The other characters lend support to the main ones, filling out friendships and giving us some suspects.
Right away I had two characters pegged as possible bad guys. The poacher wasn’t just into making money. His lust for blood was becoming a need and I didn’t think animals would satisfy him for long.
As the attraction between Joel and Britt built, so did the suspense and danger from the poacher. Brittany is now his target and while most of the time, the author doesn’t kill off a main character, you just never know.
It’s always fun to read how the characters meet, how their assumptions screw things up, and they fight the growing attraction.  I grinned a lot, laughed too, and shook my head as Britt and Joel made a mess of things.
I especially enjoyed reading about Britt and Gypsy. The ranch owner purchased Gypsy because no one else wanted her. She was out of control and dangerous. When he asked Britt to try to gentle the wild mare, she rose to the challenge and that’s where she really showed her stuff as did the author. You could feel the excitement, but you had to be patient, just like Britt. Whatever turned Gypsy into a raging inferno didn’t happen overnight.
Beautiful scenery of Colorado, a blistering romance, and danger came together in a really good mystery/romance that kept me turning the pages, enjoying the ride.
Book 1 of the exciting Colorado Trust Series
.
Enjoy an excerpt:
A redhead sitting nearby caught his attention by flashing him a sensual smile as the live band returned from their first set break. She leaned forward to allow him a clear view of her generous cleavage, then uncrossed her long legs. His gaze slid down as she slowly re-crossed them.
It was a blatant, hot invitation and he felt nothing more than a slight twinge of lukewarm interest.
You are friggin’ nuts, man.
With a smile that felt more like a grimace, he turned back to the mirrored wall that ran the length of the bar. He lifted his drink, watching the reflection as the door behind him opened. His hand halted in mid-air, then slammed his glass down on the bar so hard he was amazed it didn’t shatter.
Brittany Lucas.
He slowly turned to regard the vision face to face. Through an opening in the crowd, he got a split-second glimpse of a gray sleeveless dress, long bare legs, and black cowboy boots. Bodies shifted, and he looked up again, focusing on those blond curls cascading in wild waves past her shoulders.
Now, there was a woman who aroused his emotions. The first being anger, and the second, desire—much as he hated to admit it. The second fueled the first, and he was halfway through the crowd before he even realized he’d moved. When he reached her, he clamped a hand on her arm to spin her back toward the door.
“Hey—”
He glared down into her startled green eyes and marched her right back outside. She tried to pull away, but he refused to release her until they reached the parking lot.
The moment she was free, she whirled to confront him, eyes flashing, chest heaving with indignation. “Who do you think you are? Grabbing me like—”
“I’m the one who walked for hours because you took my horse.”
Praise for KILLER’S INSTINCT
“What could be creepier than hunting down your own zombie mommy? And what could be more psychologically satisfying to a teen because…it’s just pretend. Isn’t it? I wanted to squeeze my eyes shut tight and turn away from the sublimely dark and smart Killer’s Instinct. But how could I? A single page in, I was hooked.” — Jacqueline Mitchard, author of What We Lost in the Dark and The Deep End of the Ocean
Killer’s Instinct by Dawn Dalton and Judith Graces is a clever and fast-paced thriller that raises the bar for monster-hunting tales. Nuanced and well-crafted, this novel is told from the points of view of four distinctly defined young characters—Hyde, the hulk in sheep’s clothing; Kain, the wild card; Caddoc, the unit jock; and Hope, both gifted and cursed with a sixth sense. Hope’s inner strengths and compassion make her a fitting role model for teenage readers, yet her vulnerability renders her a satisfyingly sympathetic heroine. Killer’s Instinct is going to knock other YA monster-battling books off the shelves.” — Gary Braver, bestselling and award-winning author of Tunnel Vision
“Hope sees dead people. It’s her greatest weapon and her ultimate curse. After the death of her father and her mother rising from the grave as a mindless corpse, Hope joins an elite fighting team at Le Manoir, a group of teens trained to deal with all manner of paranormal spooks and baddies. She wants to find what’s left of her mother and put her to rest, but first, she needs to learn how — and she might need some help along the way. Hope is a wonderful heroine, smart savvy, and good with a gun: my favorite kind of kick-asser! The other members of the team kept me on my toes, never quite sure who I could trust and what their true motivations were.” — Sherry Ficklin, author of the Gods of Fate series.
