Elysium Girls

by Kate Pentecost

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Fantasy / YA

Synopsis

In this sweeping Dust Bowl-inspired fantasy, a ten-year game between Life and Death pits the walled Oklahoma city of Elysium-including a girl gang of witches and a demon who longs for humanity-against the supernatural in order to judge mankind.

When Sal is named Successor to Mother Morevna, a powerful witch and leader of Elysium, she jumps at the chance to prove herself to the town. Ever since she was a kid, Sal has been plagued by false visions of rain, and though people think she’s a liar, she knows she’s a leader. Even the arrival of enigmatic outsider Asa-a human-obsessed demon in disguise-doesn’t shake her confidence in her ability. Until a terrible mistake results in both Sal and Asa’s exile into the Desert of Dust and Steel.

Face-to-face with a brutal, unforgiving landscape, Sal and Asa join a gang of girls headed by another Elysium exile-and young witch herself-Olivia Rosales. In order to atone for their mistake, they create a cavalry of magic powered, scrap metal horses to save Elysium from the coming apocalypse. But Sal, Asa, and Olivia must do more than simply tip the scales in Elysium’s favor-only by reinventing the rules can they beat the Life and Death at their own game.

Oh man, this sounds amazing. I loved Titans by Victoria Scott and The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater and have been looking for something similar for a while now. And just look at that cover. It blows me away. But the price tag? $17.99 for the ebook and the hardcover is the same price. I’m torn about spending that much. This is a new author for me. Knowing me, I’ll bite the bullet and grab it.

Titans

by Victoria Scott

c8df8-add2bto2bgoodreads2bblack

Genre: Fantasy / Science Fiction / YA

Synopsis

Ever since the Titans first appeared in her Detroit neighborhood, Astrid Sullivan’s world has revolved around the mechanical horses. She and her best friend have spent countless hours watching them and their jockeys practice on the track. It’s not just the thrill of the race. It’s the engineering of the horses and the way they’re programmed to seem so lifelike. The Titans are everything that fascinates Astrid, and nothing she’ll ever touch.

She hates them a little, too. Her dad lost everything betting on the Titans. And the races are a reminder of the gap between the rich jockeys who can afford the expensive machines to ride, and the working class friends and neighbors of Astrid’s who wager on them.

But when Astrid’s offered a chance to enter an early model Titan in this year’s derby, well, she decides to risk it all. Because for a girl from the wrong side of the tracks, it’s more than a chance at fame or money. Betting on herself is the only way she can see to hang on to everyone in the world she cares about.

Homo Roboticus

by Mayet Ligad Yuhico

Homo Roboticus by [Yuhico, Mayet Ligad]

Synopsis

US Colony Agent Brice O’ Rourke is traumatised as a child when half the world disappears as waters rose because of climate change and when North Korea unleashed sentient human like droid soldiers to conquer lands for their hungry people.

When the US Congress passed laws allowing the Homo Roboticus Sollus and Aequilavum programs, Brice gains Ira, a sister, and meets a fellow droid agent Lee Jae Sung who saves her life during a mission.

As a new President wins on an anti-robotist, authoritarian stance vowing a pre-machine existence, will Brice defy her own government and risk her life to save loved ones from extinction?

“Homo Roboticus is a richly-imagined cautionary tale of a future earth in which long-feared climate disaster has actually happened, the world’s population is permanently at war, and robots have become almost more human than their creators.” –Susan Krawitz, author of Viva, Rose!, a Sydney Taylor Honor winner, National Jewish Book Award debut fiction finalist, and Spur Award finalist

 Enjoy this peek inside:

Brice entered the glass portal. Whoosh! She closed her eyes as a machine sucked her thin suit and headgear from her body. And then the safety lights flashed, and she entered the safe house.

Its coolness was a welcome respite from the heat outside. Naked, she sat on a pod-shaped chair, closed her eyes, and waited for the rest of the ritual. A squadron of tiny cleaning machines whirred around her, thin brushes entering the crevices of her face and body, scrubbing them clean of toxic ash. When they flew away, spray jets descended from the ceiling and water cascaded down, washing away any debris. When the safety lights flashed again, she stood and stepped forward into drying gusts of air. With the flash of a single green light, she was cleared to leave the portal.

Her dark blue suit was hanging inside a cabinet by the door. As she dressed, she tried not to think how much she loathed this stiff, ugly, utilitarian garment. Instead, she turned her focus to the notes she would write about the Agni landscape. “Day 15. Han Machina survivor #2817 interview notes in Annex V. Still no daylight due to smog, pollutants enter the crevices of the body’s orifices, need for a mask 24/7. UNINHABITABLE.”

As always, a thin whirring Bee, her mechanical electronic monitor, had stood by during the cleaning ritual and was now hovering at its usual arm’s-length distance from her head. That soft, buzzing noise was her constant companion. There was nothing she could do that wouldn’t be observed by the Colony. She turned away from the Bee, as if to block out its presence.

Lost Solace BT Poster

Lost Solace

by Karl Drinkwater

Lost Solace (cover)

Genre: Science Fiction

My Review

I’m not going to go into a description of the book. The synopsis, which hooked me immediately, does that. What I will tell you is that two characters carry the plot, and what a thrilling one it is.

All through the book I was wondering what Opal was looking for. What made her take such a desperate step and steal a ship and it’s A.I. to search space for lost ships that might be just rumors. Was it a particular ship she was looking for? And was it the ship or what it contained that she was seeking?

The author put me in Opal’s shoes from the opening scene where Clarissa, the A.I. that Opal had stolen and named, woke her from sleep to say they were approaching something. I really enjoyed the dialogue between these two women. Yes, I’m going to refer to Clarissa as female. I know having Clarissa to talk to kept Opal sane, and safe. They were a formidable team as trust was built.

Once they find the lost ship it’s all action from then on. From the moment Opal donned her weaponized space suit to when she boarded the ship, I felt the tension build. Everything is checked and double checked. Space is unforgiving and there can be no mistakes.

I read the rest of the book at warp speed. So much is revealed about Opal, and what’s in the ship is the stuff of nightmares. I pictured many of the scenes from a movie I’d seen years ago and a book I read recently. The book took place in a cave, and space gave me the same enclosed, trapped feeling.

I hear there will be more written about these character’s and I’ll be waiting for their next journey.

Synopsis

Sometimes spaceships disappear with everyone on board – the Lost Ships. But sometimes they come back, strangely altered, derelict, and rumoured to be full of horrors.

Opal is on a mission. She’s been seeking something her whole life. Something she is willing to die for. And she thinks it might be on a Lost Ship.

Opal has stolen Clarissa, an experimental AI-controlled spaceship, from the military. Together they have tracked down a Lost Ship, in a lonely nebula far from colonised space.

The Lost Ship is falling into the gravity well of a neutron star, and will soon be truly lost … forever. Legends say the ships harbour death, but there’s no time for indecision.

Opal gears up to board it. She’s just one woman, entering an alien and lethal environment. But perhaps with the aid of Clarissa’s intelligence – and an armoured spacesuit – Opal may stand a chance.

Can she face her demons and survive?

Abominable

by Alan Nayes

Genre: Horror / Science Fiction

My Review

Here’s how it starts. A strange capsule is discovered in the ice. After some testing it’s found to have been buried there for around thirty thousand years. Impregnable and mystifying, by accident they are able to see inside. Revealed is a huge white apelike creature. Once they crack the capsule, the fun begins.

First, I can’t resist a story set in uninviting environments, especially places like Alaska. Just to survive is a daily struggle. Next, a bit of science fiction. What is the capsule’s purpose? And is the creature inside from this planet, or somewhere else? And last but not least, a rampaging creature that doesn’t belong escapes. That’s B-movie chum for me.

I went into this expecting a bit of fun and I had a lot of it. I watch a lot of movies with this kind of plot and drew on them for some great visuals. Am I morbid that some of those bloody scenes made me laugh? Maybe, but that’s part of the fun.

Several years ago I read Smilodon, another book by Alan Nayes. It had giant sabre-toothed cats. Abominable was every bit as good.

It is composed of materials unknown to science and the mystery only deepens when the large unidentified object is determined to be twenty-eight thousand years old. Who left it there so many thousands of years ago? Why?
Dr. Shelby Hollister, a specialist in primatology, is consulted when bones dug from the ice alongside the object are found to belong to an unknown species of prehistoric primate.
The story explodes in magnitude when the object begins a physical transformation revealing what is inside—a perfectly preserved giant ape!

A CHAIN ACROSS THE DAWN
BY DREW WILLIAMS

Publishing 8th August 2019
£20.00 | 9781471171154 | Hardback

My Review

Almost immediately upon starting this book I realized it wasn’t the first in the series. My bad for not taking a closer look at the title. But, that didn’t take away from the fun. I quickly connected with the main characters and gleaned some facts about what happened prior to this act.

Jane and Esa are a hoot. They are working out the kinks in their team work and learning to trust each other in some really crazy situations.  There’s this ongoing joke about Jane’s age. Esa keeps upping it and Jane denies it. I got so curious as to just how old Jane was.

And their ship, Scheherazade, Schaz for short, became a favorite character for me. Artificial intelligence with personality and humor.  If I ever traveled in space, I’d want to be on that ship.

The action is immediate and continues throughout, making this a super fast read. So much happening and so unpredictable. At one point I was thinking I was glad I hadn’t read the first book after all as the unpredictability made guessing how the character’s would respond to events even more suspenseful.

I recommend this to science fiction fans who like the ride without getting bogged down in lots of tech stuff. Those who just believe and enjoy the trip, like I did.

Bigger spaceships. Bigger explosions. Bigger planets. Bigger problems.

It’s been three years since Esa joined the ranks of the Justified after her rescue from the fanatical murderers the Pax. Together, Esa and her mentor Kamali travel from planet to planet, searching for children with supernatural abilities. It’s hard work, but Esa has never felt more assured of her place in the universe.

On a visit to a planet so remote that its inhabitants never learned that the Sect Wars ended over a hundred years ago, they learn that the Justified are not the only people searching for gifted children. There is a creature with unexpected powers who will stop at nothing to get its hands on the children that Esa and Kamali are trying to rescue.

With their latest recruit in tow — a young Wulf child named Sho — Esa and Kamali will travel halfway across the galaxy in pursuit of answers. But the answers only lead to more questions, and the danger will only increase as their terrifying nemesis turns his eyes on them.

My Review

The team sent into the wormhole might have seemed random. But they were carefully chosen and an ulterior motive emerges as you follow their fight for survival in a dangerous alien world.

I didn’t worry whether this scenario was even possible or if the science worked in this story. I just enjoyed the ride and the very strange alien beings.

And I think this would be so enjoyable as a movie. I already have some actors in mind.

Astraeus

by Haley Cavanagh

Genre: Romance / Science Fiction

Synopsis

One pre-apocalyptic Earth. One desperate space mission to find a solution. One unexpected alien.

When Dr. Sakota Thorell signed onto the mission to scout out a new, habitable planet, she knew discovering extraterrestrial life was always a possibility. But she never expected to find an alien adrift in space, nor for that alien to be so intriguing. Sakota feels an instant and undeniable attraction to Astraeus, but he represents a million possibilities, and just as many threats.

There are others hunting Astraeus, and his rescue may cost Earth its last hope.

Check out this peek inside:

She moved to pull away, but the man’s fingers closed over her wrist.

“Let me go.” She jerked her arm, but he wouldn’t release his grip. She gave him a cautionary look, and he loosened his fingers, though he still held her. Warning bells went off. What if he’s not here in peace? But his eyes sparkled impishly. He seemed to enjoy her skin pressed against his. Maybe he hadn’t been touched in a while. Or maybe he had a crush. Who knew.

Before she could extricate herself, the intercom chimed. “Sakota, are you okay?”

“Yeah, I’m fine. He’s just being friendly—”

The man’s forefinger trailed along her arm again. She sucked in a breath and shut her eyes as a series of images flashed through her mind. A high wall made of stacked stones. A hand spread out to touch the tips of tall, golden wheat of a field. Multihued buildings in the distance under a purple sky. Children’s laughter and then screams. She jerked when the images changed. Strange rain, like metal. Black ships attacking from the sky, horrible screams which rent the air, death. A gentle brush against her hand again. She inhaled and opened her eyes. The man searched her, calm and patient. She struggled to see straight, but her mind spun.

“W-was that your—”

The isolation walls shot up. Rutledge burst into the room and advanced like an angry bear, brutish, immaculate, and combat ready in his black Oceanstone fatigues. “Let her go,” he snarled.

Rutledge yanked the man’s hand off her and pushed her aside. She fell to the floor on her back in a dizzy haze, reeling from the vision. She turned her head. The man bellowed and tore loose from his restraints. His and Rutledge’s images faded into one as they collided and fought. Rutledge’s weapon whirred as he strained to activate it. The rifle propelled over her head and hit the wall.

“Stop.” Her pleas fell on deaf ears. She closed her eyes.

The men barged into the room with heavy footfalls and angry shouts. She opened her eyes, but her vision swirled. The blurred image of the alien lifted Rutledge’s lieutenant like a kitchen chair and catapulted him in the same direction as the weapon. “Stop,” she hollered to the men. “Don’t shoot him. He wasn’t attacking me.”

Another soldier fell to the floor with a sick thud, holding his stomach. “Yeah? Well, he’s attacking me.”

The alien pounced over her, crouching low. He caged her with his body and made a guttural rumble in his throat, a warning to the men. She turned her head to the marines, who zeroed their weapons in on them.

take over the planet using biological warfare. The only hope for
humanity lies with a two-thousand year old scroll hidden by the
church. The question is, can Aster and her team unravel the scroll’s
mystery in time to save the planet?
.
revelations excerpt
.
While Aster’s body was near collapse, her mind continued its ruminations like a mouse on a treadmill. Fear takes away energy. Interesting. She grunted. Interesting that you still think analytically, you idiot. Her eyes snapped back to the floor. No centipedes. Okay, rest a bit. Don’t exhaust yourself, girl. Aster slid down on the floor again and covered her face with her hands. We never should have entered this damned place. Stupid, stupid, stupid. The Dome had sent them one subtle warning after another and, like so many other clues, they ignored them. Humans, she reflected, were particularly adept at twenty-twenty hindsight. Her eyes snapped open and wide-eyed, searched the area close to her. She scooted back up. Any of those damn centipedes around? None. She was safe. At least from those creepy, crawly things.
Then a clacking sound. Those horrible feet, ending with hooves, not feet, the tapping sound on cement. She let out a gurgle of hysterical laughter. Here come the bad guys again! She pinched herself hard to try to get control and took a shaky breath. Don’t lose it now. You’ve made it this far. She got up and moved lightly along the wall and, at the junction, steered away from the clacks. Don’t know where in hell I am. She hummed lightly under her breath, repeating it several times, then giggled. No, but I do know that I’m in Hell, don’t I? How about that, Daddy? You were right all along. Your scientist daughter is rotting in Hell, just like you said I would.
She walked for about an hour, winding her way through the corridors, hugging a wall and trying not to be seen, carefully stepping over the gray cauliflower-fungi peppering the ground. Always steering away from those clacking sounds. Looking for centipedes and either killing them or walking away from the larger ones. They didn’t seem to have eyes, but somehow the centipedes could detect her. Smell? Sound?
Finally, bowing to her fatigue, Aster Worthington, famed astronomer, sagged down and sat with her knees pulled up to her chest. She just couldn’t go any farther. Exhausted, all she could do was keep watching left and right.
If they came down the corridor, she probably couldn’t outrun them but maybe she might get lucky with a shot. She knew she had to hit the head. Of course, it would help if she knew how to work the damn gun. She fiddled with a latch around the trigger. Was this the safety? Off. On. Off? On? Off? She didn’t know how long she had been playing with the gun when she was jerked out of her reverie by a sound.
Instantly, standing up, her head snapped around toward the corner of the alley, and she tightly gripped her gun. Alert. A new sound. Padding sounds. What the hell was that?

I attended college at Ohio Wesleyan where I struggled with physics.
Having made so many mistakes in college with physics, there weren’t
too many left to make and I did quite well at graduate school at Purdue.
I worked for nearly twenty years at Choate Rosemary Hall, an exclusive boarding school in
the heart of Connecticut. More often than not, students arrived in
limousines. There was a wooded area by the upper athletic fields
where I would take my children for a walk. There, under a large oak
tree, stories about the elves would be weaved into the surrounding forest.
Returning to my home town to help with a father struggling with Alzheimer’s, the only
job open was at a prison. There I taught an entirely different
clientele whose only interaction with limousines was stealing them. A
year later Alfred State College hired me to teach physics. I happily
taught there for over ten years. A rural, low income high school
needed a physics teacher and the superintendent, a friend, begged me
to help out. So, I am finishing my teaching career in a most
fulfilling way… helping kids who would otherwise not have access to
a qualified physics (and math) teacher.
My wife pestered me about putting to “pen” some of the stories which I had created
for the children and other relatives. I started thinking about a
young boy and a white deer, connected, yet apart. Ideas were shuffled
together, characters created and the result was the Return of the
White Deer. This book was published by the Martin Sisters.
Years ago I gave a lecture on evolution. What, I wondered, would be the next step? Right
away I realized that silicon ‘life’ had considerable advantages
over mortal man. Later this idea emerged as the exciting and
disturbing story called Reap the Whirlwind, my most recent novel.
I have many other stories inside my mind, fermenting, patiently waiting for the pen to
give them breath. Perhaps someday I will even write about those elves
which still inhabit the woods in the heart of Connecticut.

Genre: Science Fiction

Teaser from page 18 in the paperback.

He was especially intrigued by her expression, which reflected a delicate obliviousness to the world around her, a profound absorption in the contents of her book, and a deep contentment unlike anything Walter had ever observed before. Her eyes moved almost lovingly across the book’s yellowed pages. as if she was enamored with the words she was reading. Walter vaguely recognized her expression as that of a mother gazing tenderly into the eyes of her child.

This was a bit of a long teaser. I had to share it. I’m sure we have all had that look on our faces when reading a wonderful book.
