My tease for today is from Written All Over Her by Mia Darien

goodreads-badge-add-plus

“It happened really fast, you know? I barely even remember it, except that it was sudden and darkness followed. It’s like there were two lives, or maybe like there were two of me. There was the Nykk who existed before and then the long moment of darkness before the Nykk that existed after.”

“I guess that leaves a frightening question.” Her pale brow furrows in the most pronounced show of emotion you’ve seen yet.

“Who am I now?”

~~~~
Wow! That cover art is astonishing!
I’ve been wanting to know Nykk’s story. Now I will!
How about you? Got a tease? Tell me!
When she finds her boyfriend shackled to a white metal table Ashley feared for the worse.
On a small trip of dropping off a package for Jason’s father, the young couple never thought they would be running for their lives. Running away from supposedly friends whom in turned to be a family of harvesters.
Human harvesters and they are looking for something specific. And Ashley just might be the perfect match for that something.
Welcome to My Monday Minis.
This is where I review very short stories and flash fiction.
For today I’ll be telling you about The Harvesters
by Ashley Hill
harvesters trailer mock up 4
goodreads-badge-add-plus.
You get all of the ingredients for a good horror story. A thunderstorm, a rustic old cabin deep in the woods and some really creepy characters. There’s the huge shambling guy with the axe, the sly shotgun wielding old man, and the creepy kids.
I think the kids creeped me out the most. It had me thinking Blair Witch, when they hear the weird voices outside their tent and the kids giggling and slapping the tent.
The Harvesters is relentless and you land right in the thick of it from the get go.
Ash creeps around in the cellar of the ratty cabin and finally spots her boyfriend, Jason. He’s manacled to a metal table.
From this point on, I girded myself for what was coming.
Ash manages to get his hands free before this huge man throws an axe at her. She heeds Jason’s warning and hightails it but is rushed by a little kid. She sweeps past him and slams the door of the cellar shut behind her.
That’s when she hears the whispering.
She rushes to the truck outside, but, of course, there are no keys. A vision flashes in her head of the keys hanging on a hook inside the cabin.
This is where I wonder what I would’ve done. We know the warnings for these scenes. “Don’t go back inside!” But if your true love is lying in there, helpless, about to be carved up, what else can you do?
So, in she goes again.
From the very beginning it’s a mad dash through this short story.
You’ll get to read about it from two points of view. Ash narrates most of the story, but Jason does have his own side to tell.
Then their story meets again as they struggle to survive multiple attacks with no help for miles in any direction.
 I was thinking serial killers or a family of cannibals maybe. I’m still not sure exactly what they wanted from Ash.
That brings me to the ending. It’s a cliffhanger and a big one. I kind of saw it coming, but I think I would have been disappointed if it wrapped up neatly.
This way, I get to look forward to more. I wonder if one of the next books will be about Jason. He has a dark past and I think his story would be harrowing.
We’ll see.
Let’s get to know Leah, shall we?
Character Interview with Leah –  Prior to Lost
So, Leah … or is it Christine?
Leah is what the nuns named me at my school. My real name is Christine.
Which one would you like me to call you?
Whichever you want.
Okay, I’ll go with Leah. First, I want you to relax. I know what you’re hiding. Your secret is safe with me. Okay?
Okay.
So when did you first realize you weren’t … human?
It sort of becomes apparent when you can’t seem to think of another room without accidently moving to it.
That must have been scary. I guess I can answer my next question on my own, then. I was going to ask if you had one wish, what would it be. I’d bet it would be to be human. Am I right?
Yeah. Life would be … uh … simpler that way.
Tell me a little about the disguise you keep up. How do you hide your powers?
It’s difficult. I have to be quiet and careful. I have to watch my every move. But I’m still alive so … I obviously don’t suck at it too much.
Obviously. Hats off to you. Have you picked up anything from imitating a human? Do you have typical teenage quirks? A favorite color or food?
I guess I have a favorite food. If oranges count.
Yeah, that counts. What about other typical high school things? Do you have a most embarrassing moment?
There’s too many to choose from. Let me see. Eighth grade, right after a math test I’d completely bombed. I’d been fighting with my magic all day. It seemed like every time I moved, something else in the classroom would move with me. So naturally, I’d stopped moving. A girl I hate, Sienna, screamed my name from the back of class and asked if I was constipated. I guess I looked kind of constipated. Anyway, I tried to move so I wouldn’t look as strange, and the American flag hanging over the chalkboard crashed to Sister Margaret’s desk. Scared out of my mind, I ran out of class. Of course, everyone thought I ran to the bathroom because of stomach issues. They called me Pepto for weeks.
Yikes, that’s embarrassing, all right. It doesn’t sound like you have friends, so what do you do in your spare time?
I draw. I’m pretty good at it. I did a full-scale sketch of the orphanage with shading and everything when I was six. That should have tipped me off that I wasn’t normal.
That sounds spectacular. Do you see yourself becoming an artist when you grow up?
Grow up? I’ve never thought about it. I guess I’ll have to pray that I’ll live long enough to make career decisions. Wish me luck.
Good luck. That’s for chatting with me today.
Asher St Paul thought it was just a typical zombie apocalypse like in the movies, until the necromancers crawled out of the woodwork. Since the undead have chased the living into hiding, the necromancers are able to roam freely in a new America of their making. Asher is seeking safe harbor. The need for safety is what drove him from his home in Philadelphia Pennsylvania before it was shelled. He has searched from quarantine to quarantine, always finding them overrun with zombies until he hears of The Refuge, a military compound in Binghamton New York. With his family and lover lain to rest by his own hand, he has nothing left to lose and gives everything he has to reach the safe haven. But questions arise when he reaches The Refuge, mainly, how has he been able to sustain multiple zombie bites and not change? He thinks he has found safety in the military compound turned quarantine, but he was wrong. Even now there is a necromancer trying to make The Refuge their kingdom of the dead.
About Travis Simmons: WebsiteFacebook
I have always been a do-it-yourselfer. I haven’t had any formal education on writing, and I haven’t been raised around writer types. For that matter, I wasn’t even encouraged to read when I was a kid, even though plenty of people in my family read. When I was a teenager, I discovered Cliff’s Notes on Mythology, and it sparked something in me. It was like a floodgate had been opened, and all of these stories started rushing in. I would get ideas at random times, and I would jot them down. I have a pretty big file system of everything I have ever written. Someday I will get to them and put them all into electronic files. There is some good material in there, but there are a lot of bad stories too.
I started writing when I was thirteen or fourteen. At an early age I was already writing books of Saracin (the world The Bonds of Blood takes place in). The first book I wrote of that place was “The Calling of the Two” (not yet released). While I was writing that, I kept thinking of these characters Jovian and Angelica. I knew they had a part to play in the storyline, but they weren’t going to be in the same series. For that matter, they weren’t even going to be in the same age. As I finished the first draft of “The Calling of the Two” I went on to write the first book of Angelica and Jovian’s story. At that time it was The Mirror of the Moon. Later an editor told me it was so massive that I should make the one volume into two, and so The Bonds of Blood was born, and The Revenant Wyrd Saga went from a planned three to six.
That story has taken many forms until now, and I am sure if I didn’t declare that it was “done” it could continue to transform.
Along the way, I discovered my passion for research. I absolutely love researching. It would be nothing for me to sit for days on end, barely eating, just getting up to take care of necessities, and research really odd theories and stories. I get my ideas from them to be honest. Of course, my idea’s are never the main theme of the research I am doing, but it always seems to come from some obscure topic mentioned while I am researching. For instance one book I am outlining now is based on something I heard while watching Ancient Aliens.
Unlike most authors, I have not always loved reading and writing. I hated it until I was in 7th grade. My teacher wanted us to read the entire semester. We would read a book and write in a journal about it. Back then the teachers were allowed to spend more time on what their passions were, and actually foster something in their students, and she did just that. She made me love reading and writing. She told me to go to her book shelf and pick out a book that I was interested in. I found one of my first loves: David Eddings’ Pawn of Prophecy.
Back then I was in remedial reading, and my teacher (Mrs. Peters) would sit with me for the time I was in her classroom, taking turns reading the story out loud with me. We would read where the adventure was taking Garion, and then we would flip to the beginning and look at the map so we could follow them as well.
I think it was at that point, getting lost in a book I love to this day, that I knew I had to do this. I had to create the same magic for others that Mr. Eddings created for me.
At times it is boggling. I have three series of books started, and 2 more forming in my mind (and outlined on the computer). At this point I have to step back and finish the ones I have started before I can let myself move forward.
I feel that I am blessed in being able to write, and forging a life of my passion. It is tough at times, but that is what makes the payoff all the sweeter. The writing business is a huge adventure, trying to figure out what to do and what not to do; when to do things and when not to do anything. Currently I am planning the release of the second book to “The Bonds of Blood”. This is the first time I am armed with the knowledge of what I must do for a book release, and I finally understand why it nerves so many authors up, but it is that excitement that makes me love writing. Every time I hear a reader I don’t know praise my work, it makes my heart race and brightens my day.
Travis is the author of The Bonds of Blood, the first book in his epic fantasy series The Revenant Wyrd Saga. He has also written a young adult novel called A Lament of Moonlight which is book one of his pre-apocalypse series The Harbingers of Light. He is currently seeking publication for the first book of a third series, a zombie novel called Desolation. When he isn’t writing he is helping his family and trying to live a normal, under the radar life. His interests lie in cooking, gardening, green living, and human rights advocacy. He is a huge supporter of the Trevor Project and all agencies that seek to preserve natural resources and protect pets from abuse.”
EXCLUSIVE EXCERPT FROM HEARTSEARCH: FOUND, BOOK II
“NO!” we yelled in unison then Jakki continued, “Becky, trust me. It’s not safe – you mustn’t go out there.” Anxiety was etched into her features, overflowing into her tone. Becky raised one eyebrow, hesitating. She knew Jakki was particularly sensitive to elements around her and with her psychic abilities was virtually never wrong when she made comments with such conviction in her voice.
“So what do we do then?” Becky asked.
Jakki didn’t hesitate. “First, make sure all the doors and windows are locked, especially in the twin’s room, then we’ll go from there.” Without waiting for another comment, Jakki strode to the back door and checked it. I ran upstairs to the nursery while Becky checked the front door and lounge windows.
We were all seated again within minutes. Becky was the first to pierce the silence.
“So now what?”
Jakki raised her eyes. “There’s something not quite right. I sense danger, but not . . . evil. It’s weird. My spirit guides are saying that whoever is out there is tenacious and he’s not going to give up until he gets what he wants. The big question is what exactly does he want?” There was an edge to her voice we had never heard before and it made us anxious.
“So do we phone the police or what?” I asked, a frown crinkling my forehead and my lips tightening into a thin line.
Jakki stared at me as if searching for something in my face; a couple of minutes passed before she spoke.
“The police can’t really help you,” she replied sadly.
What? Why not?” My voice rose an octave as I blurted out my questions.
“To be honest, I don’t think they can help with this, unless they’re willing to sit outside your house every night for the foreseeable future . . .” Pity clouded Jakki’s features as she stared at me from below her lashes.
“Jaks, please stop talking in riddles. What do you mean?” I was exasperated that she wasn’t giving me a straight answer and my tone was sharp.
Jakki glanced at Becky before turning her attention back to me. She stared directly into my eyes, her voice so quiet I had to strain to hear it.
“What I mean is . . . he’s not exactly . . . human.”
Tiffany Daune doesn’t get why people want to grow up or why anyone would ever stop eating candy. Her purse is filled with books, lip gloss and a few pieces of Lego bricks. She writes best with a dish of chocolate chips on hand and finds licorice makes a better straw than plastic.
She lives on an island and believes mermaids may be raiding her candy stash, though she hasn’t caught them, yet.
Cemetery Planet
goodreads-badge-add-plus
Imagine it. All alone on a planet far, far from home.
It’s a graveyard, the whole planet. And that’s all there is, you and the dead.
You think you are alone, but….you find you’re not.
The hologram you created for a companion doesn’t count. But she should.
She’s the one you’ll need when it comes calling.
I just had to read this book!
The premise is not that far-fetched.
Where will we put the dead in the years to come, when there is no more room to bury them.
This takes place 800 years in the future, when space travel is common, and for some, affordable.
You can come visit your loved ones, or just pay a fee to keep the grave maintained.
Kind of like a theme park for the dead.
That’s where the caretaker, Harvey Crane, comes in.
His job is to maintain the graves and keep the facility up and running, even though no one comes here anymore.
He takes a holographic image from a dead woman’s grave and enhances her so he’ll have someone to talk to. So he won’t feel so alone during his stint on the planet.
When things start going all weird and breaking down, he just thinks the equipment is in need of some maintenance.
But then he keeps seeing something streaking from gravestone to gravestone and he realizes he’s not alone. There’s something else, something monstrous here. And it wants him.
scary graveyard photo: graveyard 2qsm4id.gif
Even if there wasn’t something there, I would probably conjure something up in my half-crazed imagination.
No human contact and the only real voice you hear is your own. You could probably go for days without saying a word.
Who knows how you would handle that. What tricks your mind might play on you.
Except, it’s no trick this time!
The author took this awesome idea and ran with it. I read it in one sitting and had to go right out and get the next book in this series.
The ending was exciting and leads you to wonder, where is this series going next.
I look forward to finding out.
About The Author:
“Although I didn’t fully commit to making writing my life’s work until my sophomore year of college, I have always been a writer at heart. I was the only student in class to get excited about school papers, even asking to write a few for extra credit on occasion. I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington with a degree in Creative Writing – Fiction. After graduating, I moved to Japan where I wrote most of my debut novel, Airion: Return to Zire and all of my second novel Airion: Light and Dawn – the first two of a four book series. Japan was a peaceful place to just sit and write, but life in Japan was also filled with adventure. However much I loved it there, I had to return home to do what I love most. Write.”
Excerpt:
“If the Cellians just wanted us dead, why didn’t they just kill Raili instead of taking him?” asked Kobi.
“That is the question, isn’t it?” said Kaiyen slowly. “If they only wanted to use his power, wouldn’t they have taken them both?”
“Not necessarily,” said Rick, fist to his chin. “Having both would probably be too dangerous to risk. They may have been afraid of being destroyed from the inside if they worked together to free themselves. Even with one son of the prophecy, they could cause considerable damage, or so they may think.”
“But Raili would never do that though,” Kobi protested. “Dad…I…I mean, Black Master Rick. You know Raili; you know he wouldn’t do anything like that.”
“It may not be his choice,” said Kimi. “The Cellians can be very persuasive.”
Kobi’s heart sank. “What would they do to him?” he asked, not wanting to hear the answer.
“Whatever they had to,” said Kaiyen. “That is why we must focus on a plan of rescue, before Raili Saio acquires the powers they seek.”
“On our fourteenth birthday,” said Kobi.
“Yes,” said Kai Ventra. “Almost all Airians change on their fourteenth birthday. Along with the natural changes they undergo, such as growing gills, they also acquire unique individual skills, allowing them to thrive more than most others in that ability. These abilities can be anything from designing exceptional clothing to controlling the elements.”
“The stronger the ability, the harder it is to control,” said Kaiyen. “No doubt Cella is depending on this.”
“It won’t work,” said Rick.
“Agreed,” nodded Kaiyen. “But there is another matter that must be discussed, if I may.” Questioning eyes turned to Kaiyen. “Lady Sara,” Kaiyen continued after a swift nod from the King. He was addressing the old woman seated beside Kimi, “have you seen anything in your Kubec about a traitor in Zire.”
Whispers filled the room. “You go too far, Captain,” said Bran.
“What are you saying,” said the advisor to Bran’s left.
“Silence,” said Sai Thayne. The talking ceased instantly. The King’s questioning eyes fell on Kaiyen then turned to Lady Sara. “Wise One?”
“This man possesses a tainted heart,” said the old woman, her eyes gazing into the diamond block. “His treachery dives deep.”
“Do you know who this man is?” asked Kaiyen.
“I see not his face nor his rank,” said Lady Sara, her brow creased and her hands resting on the Kubec. “However, he knows all that we know and some we do not.”
“It is as I thought,” said Kaiyen, “Zire’s traitor has resurfaced.”
I’m Scarlett Ryan.Yes, THAT Scarlett Ryan. I live an extraordinary life: millionaire rock star, owner of exotic cars, pictures of me in every magazine, millions of fans, and a name that is recognized world wide. It’s supposed to be my dream come true. But, my life IS a fantasy, and I want real. I want exciting. I want… NORMAL. So, I moved from California to Florida, hoping to obtain some normalcy. Instead I find…Stephan Montgomery.He’s an arrogant jerk. Seriously, I hate him. I swear if he tells me one more blonde joke, I will punch him… again… Unfortunately  I can’t stop thinking about him, or his gorgeous green eyes. Trust me, I know that he’s bad for me. If only my heart would listen.I also find out that my parents have kept a LIFE CHANGING secret from me. I need to know the truth.The harder I strive for normal, the stranger things seem to get.
My Review
There is a big age difference between me and the characters in this book. Also, I’m not rich or famous. But Jaded still brought back many memories from when I was a teenager. Foremost were the strong bonds with my girlfriends and the insecurity about my decisions, and boys. Oh, the pain and angst of young love.
Right from the start I liked Scarlett Ryan. She’s nineteen years old and been touring with her rock band for four years. She’s never had a chance at a normal life. Too busy touring to make lasting friends or fall in love.
She knows she’s acting like a spoiled brat when she throws a tantrum, telling her manager, who also happens to be her father, that she’s had enough and storms off.
She catches the first flight out of California and lands in Hope, Florida.
Being rich and having a personal assistant has its perks as everything is taken care of while she’s high above the clouds.
She arrives at her posh new digs and her stylist has her enrolled in school and even filled her wardrobe with clothes appropriate for her age group.
Lying out is her outfit for her first day of school, along with this note.
“You told me to dress you like a normal teenager, and I did my best. Don’t blame me that you look extraordinary, no matter what you wear. Good luck with high  school. Go to lots of parties, get drunk, and kiss lots of boys. But no matter what you do: DON’T FALL IN LOVE!(Trust me, high school love sucks, and always ends in heart-break). Have fun!”
Ain’t that the truth.
I really connected when Scarlett begins highschool and attempts to live a normal teenager’s life.
Her first day of school is daunting. Once the fervor of who she is dies down, she literally bumps into Thor. Her name for this handsome God.  She doesn’t know his name and he’ll only tell her when she meets him for lunch.
Then she meets Stephan. Your typical confident, young alpha male, but he does have something going for him. A wonderful smile. He’s not impressed with who she is and quickly gets under her skin, especially when he shortens her name to Scar.
At first I was thinking, Oh no, a love triangle, and these two are step brothers. But this doesn’t last long and you clearly know where Scarlett’s interest lies. With the guy “with black hair, gorgeous green eyes, snarky attitude that makes you want to slap him…” Stephan.
Ethan and Stephan quickly become an important part of Scarlett’s life, treating her like everybody else and teasing her relentlessly.
Just when things seemed to be going smoothly, Scarlett got some startling news that shocked her. She seemed to accept it too readily, but who knows how someone would react, especially a young, vulnerable woman trying to find her way.
You are taken in a whole other direction and I could see what might be going to happen. I liked the idea and hoped it would be so.
While Jaded is written for a younger audience, Ya and New Adult, I thoroughly enjoyed this romp and raced to see what could possibly happen next, grinning all the way.
And the ending. Oh no! The ending leaves you thinking, “No way!” Luckily I already had Faded, Book Two, and dove right back in.
I left Hope – the only place I’ve ever felt at home. So now what? Where do I go from here?
When I left, I didn’t just leave my home. I left my friends, my sisters, and Stephan… I just found them. I can’t lose them now.
I know that I want to do MY music. I need to remember WHY I wanted to play music in the first place. And the only way to get that is by firing my dad, but that may be harder than I thought.
On top of everything, I now have cameras following me around everywhere. Even my own home isn’t safe anymore.
I’ve come to realize that normal will never be an option for me.
My Review
Faded starts off right where Jaded left us. I really liked that, as the ending left me with lots of questions.
Scarlet leaves Florida believing it is best for her friends. She thinks it’s not fair to them to have their privacy invaded because of her fame.
She can’t stay away though. She needs them and misses them. Especially Stephan. So she returns.
Faded reveals answers to many questions from Jaded. Scarlett is maturing, becoming a stronger, emotionally grounded young woman, despite her notoriety and unusual younger years.
The secondary characters from Jaded begin to come into their own with this second book, and are an integral part of this series now.
It’s hard to review a second book without spoilers, so I’ll just that Faded is every bit as good as Jaded, if not better, since we are led further into Scarlett’s and her friends relationships and stories.
I’ll warn ya. The ending is a wowser. Just sayin. You’ll definitely be reading the third book, Hated, when it’s released.
