For today I’ll be telling you about The Man In The Fire

by Brian Harmon

The Man in the Fire

goodreads-badge-add-plus

Fire lives. It breathes, It needs oxygen to continue to consume.

Fire followed Daniel all of his life, taking from him everything he loved, everything he lived for.

Now it’s come for him.

Can he beat it? Can the fire be killed?

Fire is mesmerizing and terrifying.

The flickering flames are warm and welcoming, until you touch them.

The man in the fire is impervious to the burning touch and relentless in his pursuit of Daniel.

How could you fight something like that?

That’s what I kept thinking as I read this story.

The answer is breathtaking, just like the fire. Sucking your breathe out of your body and shocking your senses.

The story starts at the final confrontation and gives you the back story as you read along.

I felt for Daniel and if I was in his shoes, I would probably do what he did.

For such a short story, I did a lot of thinking. That’s a sign of good writing. Taking something implausible and making you believe it, feel it, and contemplate it.

Well done, Brian.

My Review

As she sits at her dying grandfather’s bedside, Amanda is told an incredible tale.  But are these disturbing revelations of his life merely the addled fabrications of a cancer-ridden mind, or is there any truth to his frightening claim that a dark and menacing figure has been roaming the land all these many years.

In the six years Allan has owned his house, it has never been even remotely haunted. But after his wife is startled by an unknown noise, he begins to notice very strange activity throughout the house. At first, he’s excited by the idea of a ghostly visitor, but his enthusiasm quickly turns to dread as he realizes that his phantom guest has also begun to notice him.

Strange noises. Phantom footsteps. Wrapping on the walls. Ear blasting shrieks. And a closet door that won’t stay closed.

This and more is happening at Allen and Selena’s house.

At first, they put it off as the house settling. But as more strange things happen, they have to face facts.

For some reason. after all the years they’ve lived in their house, it is haunted.

Whatever is haunting them is getting stronger, more territorial, and dangerous.

Something has to give.

I know what I’d do. I’d be out of there.

I’m not easily scared, but I don’t think I could handle what happens in this house.

Something that can reach out from beyond and hurt you is not to be messed with.

As the entity got stronger and more vicious, my shoulders tightened up, my head drew in to my shoulders, my elbows tucked snug against my body, and I braced myself as I kept on reading.

 The author had me connecting with Allen and Selena , wondering why in the world they didn’t just leave. I was afraid each time I turned a page that the worst was waiting for me.

So much dread from so few words. I recommend you read this after dark, preferably on a stormy night. It’s meant to scare you and the mood should be set. Just keep a flashlight handy. Wouldn’t want to be left sitting in the dark.

What’s that noise? Nope, sitting in the dark, our mind will imagine all kinds of things. Is the closet door closed?

I was very lucky and got this as a free download. Thanks Brian. I can’t think of a better way to discover new authors.

For today I’ll be telling you about Level 9 Paranoia

by Peter Rosch

Level 9 Paranoia: Shortish Ramblings of a Self-Diagnosed Schizo

goodreads-badge-add-plus

I don’t normally use the blurbs for a book. I like to write my own.

In this case, I couldn’t resist using it. You’ll see!

~~~
Think everyone’s out to get you? You aren’t alone. Or are you? Either way, you’ll get no argument from Peter Rosch. Take an exciting–albeit brief–ride in the clown car that is Rosch’s mind, where you’ll discover how some of life’s most only-seemingly mundane happenings could spiral quickly out of control. Bake sale brownies, NYC cabbies, folks in need of aide, flying First Class, and more–it could all be the end of you. Rosch has taken it upon himself to map it out for those of us who lack the natural ability to see all the disturbing possibilities that exist when you live with Level 9 Paranoia.
My Review
“Too twisted for color TV.”
I love being able to use that quote and it fits the bill with Level 9 Paranoia.
If you think you might be paranoid, you probably are.
Have you ever had that feeling like someone is watching you, the hair on the back of your neck stands up, you break out in goosebumps, and your heart races? Maybe someone is, or maybe you’re just being paranoid.
Read these scenarios and you’ll never feel safe again.
A little paranoia is a good thing, but too much and everything looks like a disaster waiting to happen.
Now that I’ve entered the mind of Peter Rosch, I’m worried whether I’ll find my way out again.
paranoia photo: paranoia paranoia.jpg
The Exit sign is lit, but what’s on the other side?
To fly or not to fly?
A stranded motorist or a psychopath?
Peter takes normal, everyday occurrences and twists them so you are imagining the worst case scenario.
I’m wondering what could happen now that I’ve read the book!
See, paranoia is contagious.
About the author
Peter Rosch
Peter Rosch is what happens when a Polish drag racing varsity bowler and a beautiful but über paranoid French Canadian Air Force brat get together on a disco dance floor in glorious Albuquerque, NM. He’s a recovering alcoholic who favors the run-on sentence – the one thing for which he offers no apologies. Fifteen years in NYC as an award winning writer, creative director, and commercial director in advertising has left him moderately famous in an industry filled with the very best kind of people, lunatics. His commercial work for Levi’s, AXE, Rolling Stone Magazine, and more is polarizing, and you either hate it or love it because you’ve definitely seen it. When he isn’t writing ads, penning entries for his blog LEVEL 9 PARANOIA, outlining ideas for new books, or performing as his alter ego, Joey Jo Jo, in NYC’s most prolific douche rock band The Future, you will most likely find him playing fetch with his cat Target. Yes, his cat plays fetch.
For today I’ll be telling you about The Rain Wouldn’t Take Away The Pain
by Cedrix E. Clarke
The Rain Wouldn't Take Away the Pain
goodreads-badge-add-plus
The cover left me clueless, but it did catch my eye while browsing for a short story.
I downloaded this for free and want to say thanks to Cedrix and to all of you wonderful authors for your free books.
How else could I afford to sample so many different stories.
What was supposed to be a lovely drive to my parents house for Thanksgiving was turning into something more serious.
Mary, a brilliant and lovely young woman and possibly the love of my life, was showing an unusual side of herself.
I never realized she was so insecure about how strangers would feel about her.
I was trying to figure this out, but the odd noise coming from under my car was a distraction. I should have got that looked at before we left.  Also, as I was behind the wheel, I needed to pay attention to the road.
I admit, I was a bit over it with her worries, but I felt a need to reassure her, and to find out what she was so afraid of.
Meanwhile, I’m worried about those noises still coming from under the car. They seem to be caused by turning to the left, so I baby the car around those turns. The tunnel ahead, created by a canopy of thick trees, is a straight shot and we are almost to my parents, so I feel safe to speed up.
There, smack dab in the center of the road, stands a magnificent buck. Expecting him to move, I’m surprised when he calmly gazes at me, standing motionless.
I keep expecting him to move as I draw nearer. If he doesn’t, maybe I can go around him.
I apply the brakes, not knowing what the deer will do….
So much in such a short story.
The conversation between these two lovers and the introspection by the narrator make you feel like a fly on the wall, viewing and listening to everything.
The conversation flowed so naturally and the scenes were depicted in visual detail.
As the story progressed, I became curious about Mary and what was going through her mind to make her so worried. But, then I felt this creeping sense of dread, of suspense. Somehow, without really mentioning it, the author weaved in this calm before the storm feeling. I began to anticipate what could be coming.
What came, was so different from what I was thinking. I actually wasn’t sure what would happen, but I never saw this coming.
The Rain Wouldn’t Take Away the Pain will make you think. It will make you ask yourself some poignant questions and it will push the limits of believability.
This is a very short story that left me with a “what do I know” feeling.
For today I’ll be telling you about To Disturb The Dead by Brandon Berntson.
To Disturb the Dead
goodreads-badge-add-plus
My Review
I used to listen to this broadcast on the radio when I was teenager. I think it was called Macabre Theatre, not sure. I would lie in bed with the lights out and listen to stories told by one or two actors. There would be sound effects to go along with their narration, like creaking floorboards and squealing hinges as a door slowly creeps open. They were deliciously frightful and scared me but good.
This would have been a great story to listen to on that program. I think I would have been too creeped out to run over and turn the light on. I’d probably have pulled the covers up to my eyes and lay flat on my back, hoping nothing yelled “Boo!”
Kathy Mender is 16 years old and thinks she knows it all.
A typical teenager. But she’s not. She is obsessed with death and digging up a dead body.
Her life at home is miserable and she spends all of her time in classes reading dark, disturbing books. That’s where she’d rather be.
She doesn’t know where she belongs.
One morning, between classes, a thought blossoms in her mind.
“Don’t make us perform these grisly deeds ourselves. Help us build a monument, erect a found action for the dead. We can give you that education you desire, honey. Along with a loving upbringing.”
This had me thinking. Did something just speak to her, encourage her strange desire to dig up a body, or is she deranged. Because, she is now determined to do this deed. She’s not going to wait any longer.
Poor Bobby Farks. He is so in love with Kathy, he will blindly follow her descent into the world of the dead.
Maybe popcorn and movie would have been a better first date for these two. I mean, digging up a dead body! This boy is head over heels, stupid blind, in love.
Nothing good will come of this union.
I had a creeping feeling all through this story. It’s ghoulish and keeps you wondering. I especially liked the ending the author gave me. Not what I was expecting.
Welcome to My Monday Minis.
This is where I review very short stories and flash fiction.
For today I’ll be telling you about Escaping by John K. Patterson.
This cover art is temporary. I'll find something better from a willing artist and post it as soon as possible.
My Review
Tobias Carter just hopes the damaged carrier will stay together. Maybe they will get lucky and won’t be followed from the city.
No such luck. Two Arriver drones are racing over the sand to intercept them. It doesn’t look good, and Tobias has given up on prayer.
But, Reverend Rousseau hasn’t given up on Tobias.
My thoughts
This is a really fast read. Alien beings have attacked the city and most of the ships, with survivors on board, didn’t make it far.
With their last transport falling apart around him, Tobias is carrying on a conversation with the Reverend.
He’s seen some terrible things back on Earth and doesn’t want to go there with the holy man, but Rousseau is persistent.
After the read the last sentence, I thought about this story.
The ending was somewhat predictable, but I got the one I wanted.
I haven’t read many science fiction books that deal with God and lack of faith.
The author spun it all together in a neat little package that will make you think too.
My Review
Jennifer has kicked her long time drug habit, but temptation is great as she’s living with her drug dealing boyfriend, Tony.
In desperation, she flees Tony and his druggie friends and camps out in the woods. She’s estranged from her family and has nowhere to go.
Her neighbor, Ebony, from across the street, happens upon her and they form a tentative friendship.
It’s difficult for either woman to trust anyone, or themselves, as they both have baggage.
Jennifer is fighting her soul-eating craving for drugs and Ebony is fighting her craving to not drink Jennifer dry.
Two damaged women with no one to turn to but each other.
This book reads like a serial episode on TV.
You know before you start reading it,  it’s going to be short and leave you hanging.
That didn’t bother me, as I’ve read another of the authors books and loved her writing.
This book is a dark, psychological read about hope, friendship, and overcoming huge adversities.
I was immediately drawn to Ebony and Jennifer. These flawed characters are genuine and my heart went out to them.
Sure, ones an ex-addict and the other is a vicious vampire, but you forget that somewhat as you learn what makes them tick.
The town of Blackcross has its secrets and something evil is coming.
There’s no shortage of suspense and the horror jumps out and says Boo!
A great beginning to this series and excited to read more, for sure!
I hear Part II will be available later in May.
5 Stars for excellent  campfire storytelling.
Description from Amazon: “Remember; you have seventy-two hours to do the deed and not a moment longer. Cut her throat and remove her heart. That, my girl, is the only way to destroy the wretched creature.” Greylock. A city supported by a network of scaffolding, bleeding rust and wheezing steam. Patrolled by an army of ‘metal men’ – creatures who’re designed for nothing more than to kill and destroy. Nothing grows. Nothing truly lives. Viola, a young orphan girl, has been thrust into this nightmarish world by the devious Mrs Casket, caretaker of the mysterious tower and maid to the Lady of Chains, a woman imprisoned without a sentence. A woman who almost single-handedly destroyed the world . . . Viola has been gifted with a task which could either see her demise or be her salvation. But who is the Lady of Chains? And why does she insist that she is connected to Viola? With the clock ticking and the metal men drawing near, Viola is about to learn that not everything in Greylock is what it seems. A spellbinding novelette with elements of steampunk. **** ALSO INCLUDES THE SHORT STORIES; Hansel and Gretel Rogan and the Gargoyle The Silent World BONUS MATERIAL: Also contains a preview of the up-coming horror serial, The Fragile Things.
Gordon Delanolan goes by the name  of Nolan. He’s one of those rare people. One of the lucky few. He struck gold, winning $50 million in the lottery. After doing right by family, sailing the world, and doing everything his heart desires, he’s bored. And unhappy. He wonders if he’ll every be truly happy.
You know that feeling you get, like something’s about to happen? Well, that’s how Nolan’s feeling.
It starts with the stomach cramps. So bad he’s wondering if somethings ripping him apart from the inside out, sending him to his knees to pray to the porcelain god.
When things seem to be calming down and Nolan is about to drift off into la la land, IT happens.
A voice comes out of nowhere, startling him awake.
“Nolan!” it said.
What the hell? Was he dreaming?
Then he hears it again!
“Nolan, go the bathroom,” it said.
Nope, he’s not dreaming.
At first he tries to ignore the voice. But it proves, with excruciating pain, to be impossibe. IT won’t be ignored.
I just love Adam’s mind. It takes you out there, way out there. I would love to see his stories as episodes on Twilight Zone.
Nolan has a voice coming out of his navel. Yep, his navel and that’s not all! I wish I could see the expression on your face right now. And also when you get to the “out of” part in this story. The voice is only the beginning of what happens to Nolan.
This story is like a dream. One you want to wake up from, but, at the same time, you want to see where it’s going. Know what I mean? It stayed with me for a while, like I just woke up and the feelings lingered.
5 Stars for taking me into the “out of.”
Corpus Corruptum ~ Written by Adam & Evans Light
Review coming soon.
About the author
Adam   Light
Besides being the best father and husband I can be, my ultimate goal in life is writing horror fiction that will knock people’s socks off.
I began the journey into writing for the public in the fall of 2011, and I have not looked back since. I admit that I got a late start on it, as I am pushing 40 now, but I believe that an eleventh-hour commencement is preferable to none at all.
I have self-published five short stories to date. The most recent one entitled THE CONTINUANCE AGENCY is the first chapter in a planned series still in progress. This one is a departure for me, and comes as a refreshing turning point in my writing. I look forward to writing longer works, my long term goal being to write full length novels.
I have been humbled and emboldened by all the positive responses to my stories, and thus encouraged to continue my quest. Thanks to all who have read and reviewed my work, giving an unknown author such as myself a chance to unleash my madness upon you.
The Dark Inside
These short stories contain characters from A Human Element and the soon to be released sequel, A Hidden Element.
The Well
It seems like no matter how hard he tries, Caleb can never be good enough in his father’s eyes. When he hears about the mission to the new world, he jumps at the chance to escape the dying planet and maybe get out from under his fathers disapproving control.
When his hopes are crushed, he’s devastated. And then his mother goes missing.
She’s disappeared without a trace.
The Well starts out being about Caleb and his conflicts with his father and his peers, and deepens into a mystery when his mother just vanishes. The author does a great job of misdirecting me, and I rushed to a wrong conclusion. This one is a deep, emotional read.
 The First Time
X-10 is not going to give in. He’s not going to let the twisted Dr. Bjord control this experiment.
He’s scared of the human girl. Not for the usual reasons, but because he’s afraid he’ll give in to the rip, tear, kill, urges that are the base part of him.
It’s the first time X-10 has coupled with a female and he experiences some human emotions like nervousness, lust, and excitement. But can he control the monster inside, the one that needs to rend?
Donna, through her characters conversations, made the tentative bond between the monster and the prostitute endearing for me. I wanted things to be okay, wanted both of them to survive this experiment.
But she’s a prostitute, he’s a monster, and this is an experiment. A deadly one.
The Job
Felix is a Seeker. His partner, Maria, is all woman, all human.
He’s never felt attracted to her before, but he’s made a mistake. He’s let his guard down and things got messy. Now he has to clean it up.
I was surprised a couple of times with this one. Had a few, ‘what the???’ moments. This is twisted fun. Can’t help it. I sometimes laugh at the dark stuff.
Frat Night
Tara’s so excited. Tonight she’s going to do it with Jonah. She’s been lying to him, telling him she’s a virgin, so he’ll woo her, romance her. But she’s ready now. Tonight they’ll finally be together.
It was a beautiful spring night.
Kind of saw some of this coming, but still got a shock. I was grinning and thinking, yes!
The Tree of Sheltered Secrets
She was going to kill whoever did it. Whoever cut down her tree.
She’d spent her childhood hiding in that tree, escaping into her own world. It was the only happy memory in her miserable existence. And now someone had hacked it down. It felt like she’d been cut down too.
Someone had to pay.
I felt sorry for Hilary. She had a horrendous life and now the only thing good was gone. I felt her rage build and as I read on, I wanted someone to pay. Pay big!
The Beginning
They were seventy-five strong. Adrian and his crew silently entered the chosen town and quickly got what they needed with mind persuasion. No one realized the strangeness of these visitors.
But that wasn’t enough for Adrian. Oh no. He had to go and make it nasty, make two people do despicable things just for his pleasure.
He also made his son Caleb and the others watch. It was a warning and a lesson.
This one is so twisted. Adrian is a sick twist and I feel so sorry for Caleb. His hate for his father is changing him. Molding him. I hope he doesn’t follow in his fathers dark footsteps.
A Lucky Strike
Ben is all alone with his foster-father now. His foster-mother is now buried and Frank expects him to take over her duties. All of them.
As Ben fantasizes about ways to kill Frank, he knows it’s only a matter of time before things turn real ugly.
It’s time to flee, but has he waited too long?
I forgot this part in A Human Element. It’s disturbing and sad. You see where Ben came from, what he endured, what shaped him.
I’m surprised he survived at all.
Excerpt – A Human Element ~ Ben
This is an excerpt from A Human Element. It’s another short about Ben taking place later than in A Lucky Strike. I’ll give a tease and tell you what I got from it.
Ben had no business being in Hud’s Place.
“North of Hotel Street in Chinatown, or NoHo as it was called, carried its distinction as the known spot for prostitute action any time of the week. He swallowed the last of his beer and laughed to himself. SoHo could be a better name for the so-many-ho’s that could be had around here.”
He shouldn’t be here. He shouldn’t have got so drunk. And he definitely shouldn’t have stepped into it with the Marines.
If he thinks the ass-kicking he just got from them was bad, the locals that get a hold of him, set him straight.
If it weren’t for the tall man, the familiar looking stranger with the bright green eyes, he’d be totally screwed.
Ben just keeps putting himself in bad situation after bad situation. I hate seeing him in the self-destruct mode.
I’m curious about the tall man, why is he always showing up at the worst times? Why is he following Ben?
Seeing a character falter, make bad moves and stupid ones, helps me connect with them, makes them human for me. I’m connected with Ben.
I enjoyed all of these stories. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be…..Ha! Not gonna tell ya!
The Dark Inside gets Five Stars from me. Each story is distinct and wrings out my emotions.
